WOLVES OF WAR (Facebook) kommen aus Elmshorn und haben seinerzeit als Industrial-Metal-Band angefangen. Jedoch entstanden irgendwann neue musikalische Visionen und der Sound entwickelte sich. Die Musik wurde komplexer und vielschichtiger und so steht nun die Veröffentlichung des wohl ambitioniertesten Albums „Wasteland Warfare“ kurz bevor.

WOLVES OF WAR wollen apokalyptische Geschichten erzählen, indem sie den Hörer mit ihrer hart ausgerichteten Musik in eine andere Welt ziehen, die sich an fiktiven Geschichten orientiert, die man beispielsweise von ‚Mad Max‘ oder ‚Fallout“ kennt. Um eine dichte Atmosphäre zu erschaffen, ist die Band nun neue Wege bei der Produktion gegangen. Mögen die Songs auf dem Album „Dystopia“ schon ansprechend gewesen sein, so waren sie doch etwas eindimensional. Das verhält sich bei dem kommenden Release völlig anders.

Zunächst einmal nutzt man orchestrale Arrangements, um die Atmosphäre epischer und tiefer zu gestalten. Das ist natürlich keine neues Stilmittel, aber ungewöhnlich ist schon, dass WOLVES OF WAR das Orchester hier nicht als Ergänzung zu den klassischen Instrumenten komponiert haben, sondern umgekehrt. Die Band erklärt, dass die Bandinstrumente gezielt nachträglich eingearbeitet wurden. Durch die Verwendung asiatischer, arabischer und nordischer Instrumente würden die Songs ein für Metal eher untypisches, aber immersives Klangbild, ergeben.

Da hört sich alles sehr interessant an und macht neugierig. Mal sehen, ob sich diese Versprechungen auch beim Hören bewahrheiten. Tatsächlich hatte ich die erste Single „Lægjarn“ zufällig schon vor vier Wochen gehört, als ich auf der Suche nach neuen Songs für unsere Playlist ‚METALHEADs new stuff‘ war. Ich war sehr angetan von der Musik und ruckizucki landete der Song in der Playlist. Der Sound klingt richtig fett und macht echt was her. Und es ist nicht so, dass die orchestralen Klänge nun im Vordergrund stehen würden. Die knallharte Ausrichtung ist immer noch im Fokus und die hat es in sich.

Der Sound ist vielschichtig, aber nicht überladen. Es gibt auch genügend Passagen, die sich reduzierter darstellen, aber nicht weniger imposant auftreten. Man nehme z.B. die Passage ab Minute 01:40 im Song „Lægjarn“. Ein echt cooler Part mit wuchtigen Drums und megafetten Riffs! Ganz anders fügt sich dann ab Minute 02:50 ein sphärischer Part ein, der von Synthies getragen wird, um dann in einem hochmelodischen Instrumentalpart zu zünden, der sich imposant aufbaut und in einem furiosen Soundgewitter endet. Ein sehr starker Song!

Ich springe mal kurz zurück zum Titeltrack „Wasteland Warfare“, der das Album einleitet. Es gibt kein extra Intro. Stattdessen wird es einfach im Song selbst eingebaut. Hier spielen zunächst Synthies mit orchestralen Elementen und Chören die Hauptrolle, was dem Ganzen schon direkt einen cineastischen Anstrich verleiht. Aber wie ich bereits erwähnt habe, ist die Ausrichtung größtenteils ausgesprochen hart und wuchtig gestaltet. Demensprechend steigert sich der Intensitätsgrad beträchtlich, bis nach Minute 02:40 dann die ersten Vocals Einzug erhalten, die fast ausschließlich extremer Natur sind. Hier vereint sich alles zu einem monumentalen Hörerlebnis.

Der zweite Song „Ostankino Redemption“ hat einen leichten Industrial Touch inne und klingt zunächst recht monoton. Diese Phase dauert mir einen Tick zu lang, bis der Song nach 02:30 plötzlich eine andere Wendung nimmt. Während die Härte zurückfährt, nimmt das Tempo zu und ein Männerchor erklingt und wird von Synthies begleitet. Später kehrt man zur gewohnten Härte zurück. Insgesamt dann doch wieder ein gelungener Song mit überraschenden Wendungen, die den Unterhaltungswert hoch halten.

Sehr gelungen finde ich auch den Song „Einherjer“, der zu den wildesten Erlebnissen auf dem Album gehört, gepaart mit schönen melodischen und mystischen Folk-Elementen. WOLVES OF WAR spielen auch mit nordischen Symboliken. Der Song „Fenrir“ ist in Zusammenarbeit mit Sänger Haldruhir von der Band ‚Sagenbringer“ entstanden, der auch mit einem coolen stimmungsvollen Video bedacht wurde. Der Song macht keine Gefangenen und ist ein gnadenlos guter Banger, der keine Wünsche offen lässt. Was ich als sehr angenehm empfinde, ist die Ausgewogenheit des Sounds. Es gibt nicht nur die volle Wucht, sondern viele unterschiedliche stimmungsschwangere Parts, die das Eintauchen in die Geschichten einfach macht.

Was mir ebenfalls immer ungemein zusagt, ist eine gut herausgearbeitete Eigenständigkeit der Songs. Und auch dieses Qualitätsmerkmal wurde hier gut herausgearbeitet. Insgesamt hat man sich wirklich viel Gedanken über die Kompositionen gemacht und geizt nicht mit schönen Ideen, welche ansprechend umgesetzt werden. Der Gesang passt gut zu dem Sound, wobei sich da noch Steigerungspotential erkennen lässt. Ich denke, dass ein wenig mehr Varianz bei den Vocals möglich wäre und zusätzliche Stimmungsbilder produzieren könnte.

Einen Ansatz hat man beim Song „Vârcolac“ gefunden, wo man einige Textzeilen in deutscher Sprache verwirklicht. Warum nicht? Das könnte man meiner Meinung nach mehr verfolgen. Ich denke, damit könnte man interessante Songs generieren.

Alles in allem läuft das Zusammenspiel mit den eingesetzten Chören gut, die für Abwechslung und zusätzliche Atmosphäre sorgen. Ansonsten hätte es ein wenig eintönig werden können. Auch das Gitarrenspiel könnte stellenweise noch ausgefeilter klingen, aber insgesamt ergibt sich ein absolut schlüssiges spannendes Gesamtkonzept mit hochwertiger Umsetzung.

Die letzten 20 Minuten werden rein instrumental geboten. Und auch diese sind sehr hörenswert. „Reprise“ bietet dabei noch eine dramatische Mischung aus Metal und Orchester, wobei das folgende Medley mit über 13 Minuten Spielzeit ein rein ochestrale Erfahrung schenkt, was ebenfalls seinen Reiz hat und deshalb ganz und gar nicht überflüssig erscheint, sondern eine zusätzliche Bereicherung darstellt.

Fazit

WOLVES OF WAR liefern mit „Wasted Warfare“ ein grandioses Epos, das mit cineastischen Ausmaßen triumphiert. Extremer Metal mit verschiedenen Einflüßen wird mit symphonischen Elementen verziert. So hauchen WOLVES OF WAR ihren Geschichten musikalisches Leben ein. „Wasted Warfare“ ist ein sehr ambitioniertes und zugleich eindrucksvoll ausgereiftes Album, so dass sich dem Hörer ein atmosphärisches und vielseitiges Erlebnis offenbart.

WOLVES OF WAR (Facebook) come from Germany and started out as an industrial metal band. However, at some point new musical visions emerged and the sound developed. The music became more complex and multi-layered and now the release of their most ambitious album „Wasteland Warfare“ is imminent.

WOLVES OF WAR want to tell apocalyptic stories by drawing the listener into another world with their hard-edged music, which is based on fictional stories known from ‚Mad Max‘ or ‚Fallout‘, for example. In order to create a dense atmosphere, the band has now taken a new approach to production. While the songs on the album „Dystopia“ may have been appealing, they were somewhat one-dimensional. This is completely different with the upcoming release.

First of all, orchestral arrangements are used to create a more epic and deeper atmosphere. Of course, this is not a new thing, but it is unusual that WOLVES OF WAR did not compose the orchestra to complement the classical instruments, but the other way around. The band explains that the band instruments were deliberately incorporated afterwards. By using Asian, Arabic and Nordic instruments, the songs create a rather atypical but immersive sound for metal.

That sounds very interesting and arouses curiosity. Let’s see if these promises come true while listening to the music. I had actually heard the first single „Lægjarn“ by chance four weeks ago when I was looking for new songs for our playlist ‚METALHEAD’s new stuff‘. I was really taken with the music and the song ended up in the playlist in no time at all. The sound is really fat and makes a real impression. And it’s not that the orchestral sounds are now in the foreground. The hard-hitting orientation is still the focus and it’s really something.

The sound is multi-layered, but not overloaded. There are also enough passages that are more reduced, but no less good. Take, for example, the passage from minute 01:40 in the song „Lægjarn“. A really cool part with powerful drums and mega-fat riffs! From minute 02:50 onwards, a spherical part carried by synths is inserted in a completely different way, only to ignite in a highly melodic instrumental part that builds up impressively and ends in a furious thunderstorm of sound. A very strong song!

Let me jump back to the title track „Wasteland Warfare“, which introduces the album. There is no extra intro. Instead, it is simply built into the song itself. Synths with orchestral elements and choirs play the main role here, which immediately gives the whole thing a cinematic feel. But as I have already mentioned, the direction is for the most part extremely hard and powerful. Accordingly, the level of intensity increases considerably until the first vocals, which are almost exclusively of an extreme nature, enter after minute 02:40. Everything comes together here to create a monumental listening experience.

The second song „Ostankino Redemption“ has a slight industrial touch and sounds quite monotonous at first. This phase lasts a little too long for me until the song suddenly takes a different turn after 02:30. While the heaviness is reduced, the tempo increases and a male choir is heard, accompanied by synths. Later, the usual heaviness returns. All in all, this is another successful song with surprising twists and turns that keep the entertainment high.

I also find the song „Einherjer“ very successful, which is one of the wildest experiences on the album, paired with beautiful melodic and mystical folk elements. WOLVES OF WAR also play with Nordic symbolism. The song „Fenrir“ was created in collaboration with singer Haldruhir from the band ‚Sagenbringer“, who was also provided with a cool atmospheric video. The song takes no prisoners and is a mercilessly good banger that leaves nothing to be desired. What I find very pleasant is the balance of the sound. There is not only the full force, but many different atmospheric parts that make it easy to immerse yourself in the stories.

Another thing that always appeals to me is the well-developed individuality of the songs. And this quality feature has also been worked out well here. All in all, a lot of thought has been put into the compositions and they are not stingy with nice ideas, which are implemented in an appealing way. The vocals go well with the sound, although there is still room for improvement. I think that a little more variance in the vocals would be possible and could produce additional atmospheric images.

One approach was found in the song „Vârcolac“, where some of the lyrics were realized in German. Why not? In my opinion, that could be pursued more. I think it could generate interesting songs.

All in all, the interplay with the choirs works well, providing variety and additional atmosphere. Otherwise it could have become a little monotonous. The guitar playing could also sound more sophisticated in places, but overall the result is an absolutely coherent, exciting overall concept with a high-quality level.

The last 20 minutes are purely instrumental. And these are also well worth listening to. „Reprise“ offers a dramatic mixture of metal and orchestra, whereby the following medley with a playing time of over 13 minutes offers a purely orchestral experience, which also has its charm and therefore doesn’t seem superfluous at all, but is an additional enrichment.

Conclusion

With „Wasted Warfare“, WOLVES OF WAR deliver a grandiose epic that triumphs with cinematic dimensions. Extreme metal with various influences is embellished with symphonic elements. This is how WOLVES OF WAR breathe musical life into their stories. „Wasted Warfare“ is a very ambitious and at the same time impressively mature album, revealing an atmospheric and versatile experience to the listener.
