Es ist soweit! Wir gehen in das Licht! METALHEADS Toplist 2022 wird heute das Finale für das Jahr 2022 einläuten und wie es sich für eine Finale gehört, wird es gewaltig werden. Es war wieder einmal eine tolle Erfahrung das ganze Jahr mit all seinen grandiosen Veröffentlichungen Revue passieren zu lassen. Eigentlich bräuchte ich zwei oder drei Leben, um all diese fantastische Musik zu genießen, die mittlerweile existiert und immer weiter über uns hereinbricht.

Nur ein Narr könnte von sich behaupten in der heutigen Zeit einen kompletten Überblick über die Rock- und Metalszene zu haben. Die Zeiten sind vorbei. Gerade im Underground tummeln sich so viele geile Bands, die es wert sind gehört zu werden. So bin ich froh, dass es neben ‚metal-heads.de‘ auch andere Magazine gibt, die sich der Musik widmen und vielleicht Alben und Bands präsentieren, die uns durch die Lappen gegangen sind. Jetzt aber weiter zu meiner Toplist.

Es gibt Alben, die mich dieses Jahr total abgeholt haben, wobei mir aber in deren Kategorie kein anderes Album zu Ohren gekommen ist, welches vergleichbar gewesen wäre. Und damit möchte ich beginnen, bevor ich mit der Kategorie abschließe, in der ich für mich das Album des Jahres gefunden habe.

BLOODYWOOD

Vielleicht haben sich manche schon gefragt, wo die zweite indische Band bleibt, die ich zu Beginn meiner Toplist erwähnt habe. Neben GIRISH AND THE CHRONICLES sind das BLOODYWOOD (Facebook). Zwei Bands, die unterschiedlicher nicht sein könnten.

BLOODYWOOD haben einen völlig innovativen Sound erschaffen und hauen Euch einzigartigen indischen Folk Metal um die Ohren. Neben der Black Metal Band WHITE WARD für mich eine völlig neue musikalische Erfahrung. Im Februar erschien das Album „Rakshak“. Nach dem Start dauert es nur einige Sekunden, bis die Bombe platzt und Schockwellen von fettem rifflastigen Groove sich massiv ausbreiten. Verdammt noch mal! Was für ein bombastischer umwerfender Sound! Hat stellenweise etwas von SLIPKNOT, geht aber ganz eigene andere Wege. Der Song „Gadaar“ ist ein richtiger Smasher, der Euch sofort mitreißt! Glaubt Ihr nicht? Na dann zieht Euch das mal rein…

Diese typischen indischen Klänge einer Tumbi (einsaitiges Zupfinstrument) rocken so was von und fügen sich geradezu perfekt in den Groovecore-Sound ein. Aber damit ist mit den Besonderheiten noch nicht getan. Zwei Sänger schmettern hier die Texte aus einem indischen und englischen Mix. Da wäre zum einen Jayant Bhadula, der mit seinem engergiegeladenen Shouting alles in Grund und Boden schreit. Und sein Mitstreiter Raoul Kerr rapt seine Parts nicht minder eindrucksvoll mit voller Wucht in die Fresse.

Bei BLOODYWOOD gibt es eine breite Range: Von harmonischem Gefühl und epischen Momenten bis hemmungslose Wut und unbändige Kraft ist alles dabei. Es gibt viele richtiger Burner auf dem Album, die einfach genial sind. Alles in allem fackeln BLOODYWOOD mit ihrem Album „Rakshar“ eine Wahnsinnsshow ab. Man wird von der explosiven machtvollen Energie besessen und mitgerissen.

MÅNEGARM

MÅNEGARM (Facebook) waren dieses Jahr die einzigen, die mich mit ihrem Album „Ynglingaättens Öde“ in der Sparte Viking-Metal überzeugt haben. Ihren Sound zeichnet die Verbindung mit folkloristischen Elementen aus. Vielseitigkeit ist Trumpf auf diesem Album, das mit ganz unterschiedlichen Facetten glänzen kann. (Review)

Es ist schon ungewöhnlich das Album mit dem epischen zehnminütigen Track „Freyrs Blod“ einzuleiten. Doch der Song überzeugt auf ganzer Linie und bietet ein episches Erlebnis. Für den Song „Stridsgalten“ haben sich diverse namenhafte Gastmusiker der Gilde angeschlossen und ihren Beitrag geleistet. Jonne Järvelä (Korpiklaani), Robse Dahn (Equilibrium) und Pär Hulkoff (Raubtier/Hulkoff) stehen mit den MÅNEGARM-Mannen Seite an Seite und schmettern einen Wahnsinnssong raus. Ein Song, der schon mit seinem mächtigen stampfenden Beginn die Erde erschüttern und die Vikingerherzen höher schlagen lässt. Plötzlich folgt der Angriff und die Krieger rasen nach vorne. Der Song fliegt unter galoppierenden Trommeln davon. Der Song spielt mit ganz verschiedenen Stimmungen, verliert dabei aber nie das heroische epische Gefühl.

Um die Vielseitigkeit des Albums zu verdeutlichen, möchte ich hier als Kontrastprogramm den Song „En snara av guld“ erwähnen. Dieser zaubert mit einer wunderbaren melancholischen Stimmung eine besondere Atmosphäre hervor. Eigens für diesen emotionalen Song hat Erik Grawsiös Tochter Lea Grawsiö Lindström die sanften gefühlvollen Gesänge einfließen lassen. Hört mal selbst. Ein faszinierender Song mit einem beeindruckenden Video.

Heavy Metal

Nur noch ein wenig Geduld und Ihr werdet erfahren, was mein Album des Jahres ist. Doch vorher einige Highlights aus der Kategorie Heavy Metal.

Nicklas Sonne

Den Beginn macht Nicklas Sonne (Facebook) mit seinem Solo-Debütalbum „Resonance“, das den rockigen Heavy Metal lebt. Es ist ein Album geworden, dass man von vorne bis hinten in Dauerschleife hören kann. Es gibt keinen Grund, dass Album „Resonance“ von Nicklas Sonne nicht zu lieben. Euch erwarten fantastische Songs, die modern und frisch klingen. Die Songs erblühen alle mit einer leuchtenden berauschenden Kraft, die den Hörer durchströmt und das Herz mit Freude und Stärke erfüllt. Eine ganz tolle beachtliche Leistung und umso bewundernswerter, weil es ein Soloalbum ist.

Als Songbeispiel führe ich „Spit Out Your Pride“ an. Es geht nicht zimperlich zur Sache, sondern rennt schnurstracks nach vorne und glänzt mit einem epischen Chorus, wobei das ausgiebige Solo mal wieder erstklassig gerockt wird.

Das Video zum Thema Arroganz und Überheblichkeit, fehlender Empathie und Toleranz anderen gegenüber ist hervorragend umgesetzt und Nicklas ist sich auch für ein wenig Selbstironie nicht zu schade und repräsentiert als Hauptdarsteller in seinem Video genau die oben genannten charakterlichen Hässlichkeiten.

MACHINE HEAD

Es gibt einen groben Stilbruch und wir befinden uns nun im brettharten Heavy Metal, der düster und hart interpretiert wird. Es war noch nie das Ding von Mastermind Robb Flynn auf der Stelle rumzutreten und sich in eine enge Metal-Schublade stecken zu lassen. Er liebte es immer mal wieder mit dem Sound zu experimentieren. So verwundert es nicht, dass sich auf dem neuen Album „ØF KINGDØM AND CRØWN“ wieder verschiedene Stile einfließen. Aber diesmal ist diese Mischung wirklich sehr gelungen.

Der Opener „Slaughter The Martyr“ startet mit einer atmosphärischen melancholischen Einleitung. Es hat zunächst einen balladeske Charakter, bevor der Song selbstverständlich noch in den Angriffsmodus wechselt und später noch hymnenhafte Züge mit epischen Charakter annimmt. Mit „Choke On The Ashes Of Your Hate“ folgt ein astreiner Thrash-Banger der geilsten Sorte. Hier werden Euch die Nacken weichgeprügelt. Dazu gesellen sich hammerharte fiese Tempiwechsel und Breakdowns, die es verdammt hart in sich haben. Das Gitarrensolo ist verrückt und wahnsinnig. Der Song strotzt nur so vor Wut und Wahnsinn. Die Lyrics werden in brutalster Form rausgebrüllt. Ein Song wie ein Unwetter und grollendem Donner, der kein Stein auf dem anderen lässt.

MACHINE HEAD liefern mit „“ØF KINGDØM AND CRØWN“ eine faszinierende Geschichte. Die musikalisch vielfältigen Kapitel verkörpern die Erzählung gekonnt und sind mit viel Sorgfalt erschaffen worden, um die jeweiligen Charaktäre so wie deren Handlungen und Empfindungen darzustellen. Es ist ein echt gutes Album mit vielen geilen Momenten geworden, dass eindrucksvoll aufzeigt, dass mit Robb Flynn immer noch zu rechnen ist und er sein Pulver noch lange nicht verschossen hat. In ihm steckt noch genügend kreative Power! (Review)

UNDERTOW

UNDERTOW (Facebook) haben ihr neuntes Album „Bipolar“ über El Puerto Records veröffentlicht.Der Sound reicht von reißerischen Zerstörern bis hin zu langsamen melancholischen Songs. So extrem und ausgereift wie auf dem aktuellen Album hat man sie aber noch nie gehört. Den unorthodoxen Anfang macht der sehr schwermütige Song „When Tears Became Scars“. Wo sonst ein Song den Hörer aufrütteln soll, macht sich erst einmal Schwermut breit.

So gemächlich und schwermütig der erste Song rüberkommt, desto mehr geht der zweite Song „On Fire“ ab. Mit richtig Schmackes wechselt man in einen furiosen wütenden Angriff. Das Tempo wird stürmisch und peitscht brutal thrashig nach vorne. Fiese sägende Riffs fräsen ein Schneise in die Gehirnwindungen. Sänger Joschi brüllt einem mit voller Wucht die Lyrics in die Fresse, dass einem die Haare zu Berge stehen. Geil finde ich die eingestreuten sirenenartigen Leads, die noch mal gewaltig Zündstoff bieten. Sehr cool ist auch der groovige stampfende Rhythmuswechsel, bevor das megamäßige fetzige Gitarrensolo abgefeuert wird und sich ein längerer melodischer Instrumentalpart anschließt.

Gemäß dem Albumtitel „Bipolar“ wird mit extrem gegensätzlichen Stimmungen gespielt. Es ist ein Auf und Ab der Gefühlswelt, eine emotionale Achterbahn. UNDERTOW haben mit „Bipolar“ ein intensives Album erschaffen. Sie haben vielschichtige Songs geschmiedet, die in allen Bereichen so ausgereift wie nie zuvor klingen. Das Songwriting ist komplexer geworden, so dass sowohl die Instrumentalfraktion als auch die Vocals mehr Raffinesse und Ausdruckskraft zu bieten haben. Ein Hammeralbum! Mutig und stark! (Review)

DIABLO

DIABLO (Facebook) haben ihr Album „When All The Rives Are Silent“ im Februar veröffentlicht und ich hatte mich auf der Stelle in das Album verliebt. Und trotz sehr starker Konkurrenz ist das Album nach wie vor genauso beeindruckend wie beim ersten Hören. Ich hatte damals schon prophezeit, dass dieses Album schwer zu übertreffen sein wird. Und ich sollte recht behalten.

Hier stimmt einfach alles!

Die kraftvolle charismatische Stimme von Sänger Rainer Nygård klingt besser als je zuvor. Die düsteren druckvollen Passagen messen sich mit melodischen Einlagen, wobei die insgesamt dynamische Entfaltung nicht aus den Augen verloren wird. Die Gitarren werden phänomenal bespielt, egal ob es die bestechenden Riffs, die großartigen Leads oder die imposanten Gitarrensolos betrifft. Heikki Malmberg an den Drums macht hier mächtig Dampf und sorgt zusammen mit Basser Aadolf Virtanen für einen hervorragenden Flow.

Hört Euch beispielsweise „The Stranger“ an. Es beginnt heftig mit starken Riffs und einem kernigen Bass, wechsel dann in einen behutsamen Zwischenpart, um dann einen megamäßigen Refrain zu offenbaren, der in epischer Verzweiflung mit einer immensen Kraft ergreifend dargeboten wird. Pure Emotionen, die meine Seele überfluten. Wunderschön und auf seine eigene intensive Weise sehr ergreifend! Ich kann gar nicht sagen wie oft ich diesen Song gehört habe, weil er mich einfach so berührt.

DIABLO beehren uns mit ihrem monstermäßigen Album „When All The Rivers Are Silent“! Dabei muss man vom ausgereiftesten Werk ihrer Karriere reden. Das Album trifft voll ins Schwarze! An diesem Album gibt es nichts auszusetzen. Es gibt keinen Song, der Mittelmaß ist. Hier wird ein besonderer Moment nach dem anderen hervorgezaubert. Mach irgendeinen Song an und er wird dich packen!

Der Sound bietet eine perfekte unterhaltsame Mischung aus kreativer drastische Härte und epischen emotionalen Momenten. Dabei gibt sich Sänger Rainer Nygård vielseitig. Die instrumentalen Fähigkeiten der Band sind unbestritten eine Meisterleistung und die Kompositionen sind einfach wunderbar konzipiert. Mich hat das Album in allen Belangen vollkommen überzeugt. Lob und Anerkennung für diese Meisterleistung!

English review

The time has come! We are going into the light! METALHEADS Toplist 2022 will kick off the finale for the year 2022 today and as it should be for a finale, it’s going to be massive. Once again, it’s been a great experience to review the whole year with all its terrific releases. Actually, I would need two or three lifetimes to enjoy all this fantastic music that exists by now and keeps coming.

Only a fool could claim to have a complete overview of the Rock and Metal scene in this day and age. Those times are over. Especially in the underground there are so many cool bands that are worth listening to. So I’m glad that there are other magazines besides ‚metal-heads.de‘ that are dedicated to music and maybe present albums and bands that have slipped through our fingers. But now on to my toplist.

There are albums that have totally thrilled me this year, but I have not heard of any other album in their category that would have been comparable. And I want to start with that before I finish with the category where I found the album of the year for me.

BLOODYWOOD

Maybe some have already wondered where the second Indian band is that I mentioned at the beginning of my toplist. Besides GIRISH AND THE CHRONICLES they are BLOODYWOOD (Facebook). Both bands that could not be more different.

BLOODYWOOD have created a completely innovative sound and hit you with unique Indian Folk Metal. Next to the Black Metal band WHITE WARD for me a completely new musical experience. In February the album „Rakshak“ was released. After the start it takes only a few seconds until the bomb bursts and shock waves of fat riff-heavy groove spread massively. Bloody hell! What a bombastic mind blowing sound! Has something of SLIPKNOT in places, but goes its own different ways. The song „Gadaar“ is a real smasher that will immediately blast you away. Don’t you think? Well then check it out…

These typical Indian sounds of a tumbi (one-stringed plucked instrument) rock so great and fit almost perfectly into the Groovecore sound. But that’s not the end of the special features. Two singers belt out the lyrics from an Indian and English mix. On the one hand there is Jayant Bhadula, who screams everything into the ground with his engergic shouting. And his comrade-in-arms Raoul Kerr raps his parts no less impressively with full force in the face.

BLOODYWOOD has a wide range: from harmonic feeling and epic moments to unrestrained rage and unbridled power, everything is there. There are many real burners on the album that are simply brilliant. All in all BLOODYWOOD torch a mad show with their album „Rakshar“. One is possessed by the explosive powerful energy and carried away.

MÅNEGARM

MÅNEGARM (Facebook) were the only ones who convinced me this year with their album „Ynglingaättens Öde“ in the category of Viking Metal. Their sound is characterized by the combination with folkloric elements. Versatility is trump on this album, which can shine with very different facets. (Review)

It is already unusual to introduce the album with the epic ten-minute track „Freyrs Blod“. But the song convinces all along the line and offers an epic experience. For the song „Stridsgalten“ various well-known guest musicians have joined the guild and made their contribution. Jonne Järvelä (Korpiklaani), Robse Dahn (Equilibrium) and Pär Hulkoff (Raubtier/Hulkoff) stand side by side with the MÅNEGARM men and belt out a hell of a song. A song that already shakes the earth with its powerful stomping beginning and makes the Viking hearts beat faster. Suddenly the attack follows and the warriors race forward. The song flies away under galloping drums. The song plays with quite different moods, but never loses the heroic epic feeling.

To illustrate the versatility of the album, I would like to mention the song „En snara av guld“ as a contrast. This one conjures up a special atmosphere with a wonderful melancholic mood. Especially for this emotional song Erik Grawsiö’s daughter Lea Grawsiö Lindström has added the soft soulful vocals. Listen for yourself. A fascinating song with an impressive video.

Heavy Metal

Just a little patience and you will find out what my album of the year is. But first some highlights from the category Heavy Metal.

Nicklas Sonne

The beginning is made by Nicklas Sonne (Facebook) with his solo debut album „Resonance“, which lives the rocking Heavy Metal. It has become an album that you can listen to from front to back in continuous loop. There is no reason not to love the album „Resonance“ by Nicklas Sonne. You can expect fantastic songs that sound modern and fresh. The songs all blossom with a bright intoxicating power that flows through the listener and fills the heart with joy and strength. Quite a great remarkable achievement and all the more admirable because it is a solo album.

As a song example I lead „Spit Out Your Pride“. It runs straight forward and shines with an epic chorus, whereby the extensive solo is once again rocked first class.

The video on the subject of arrogance, lack of empathy and tolerance towards others is excellently implemented and Nicklas is also not too shy for a little self-irony and represents as the main actor in his video exactly the above-mentioned character ugliness.

MACHINE HEAD

There is a rough break in style and we now find ourselves in hardcore heavy metal, which is interpreted in a gritty and hard way. It has never been the thing of mastermind Robb Flynn to stand on the spot. He always loved to experiment with the sound. So it is not surprising that on the new album „ØF KINGDØM AND CRØWN“ again different styles flow in. But this time this mixture is really very successful.

The opener „Slaughter The Martyr“ starts with an atmospheric melancholic introduction. It initially has a ballad-like character, before the song of course still switches to attack mode and later still takes on anthemic traits with epic character. With „Choke On The Ashes Of Your Hate“ follows a straight thrash banger. Here your necks are beaten soft. In addition, there are hammer-hard nasty tempo changes and breakdowns. The guitar solo is crazy and insane and the song is brimming with rage and madness. A song like a storm and rumbling thunder that leaves no stone unturned.

MACHINE HEAD deliver a fascinating story with „“ØF KINGDØM AND CRØWN“. The musically diverse chapters embody the narrative skillfully and have been created with much care to represent the respective characters as well as their actions and feelings. It has become a really good album with many great moments that impressively shows that Robb Flynn is still a force to be reckoned with.There is still enough creative power in him! (Review)

UNDERTOW

UNDERTOW (Facebook)have released their ninth album „Bipolar“ via El Puerto Records. The sound ranges from lurid destroyers to slow melancholic songs. However, you have never heard them as extreme and mature as on the current album. The unorthodox beginning is made by the very melancholic song „When Tears Became Scars“. Where otherwise a song should shake up the listener, first of all melancholy spreads.

As leisurely and melancholic the first song comes across, the more the second song „On Fire“ goes off. With real smack you change into a furious furious attack. The pace becomes stormy and whips brutally thrashy forward. Nasty sawing riffs cut a swath through the brain. Singer Joschi roars the lyrics with full force. I find the interspersed siren-like leads cool, which again offer tremendous fuel. Very cool is also the groovy stomping rhythm change, before the great guitar solo is fired and a longer melodic instrumental part follows.

In accordance with the album title „Bipolar“, extremely contrasting moods are played with. It is an up and down of the emotional world, an emotional roller coaster. UNDERTOW have created an intense album with „Bipolar“. They have forged multi-layered songs that sound more mature than ever before in all areas. The songwriting has become more complex, so that both the instrumental fraction and the vocals have more sophistication and expressiveness to offer. A hammer album! Brave and strong!

DIABLO

DIABLO (Facebook)released their album „When All The Rives Are Silent“ in February and I fell in love with it on the spot. And despite very strong competition, the album is still as impressive as the first time I heard it. I had already predicted back then that this album would be hard to beat. And I should be right.

Everything is just right here!

The powerful charismatic voice of singer Rainer Nygård sounds better than ever. The gloomy punchy passages compete with melodic interludes, while the overall dynamic unfolding is not lost sight of. Guitars are played phenomenally, whether it concerns the captivating riffs, the great leads or the imposing guitar solos. Heikki Malmberg on drums makes mighty steam here and provides together with bassist Aadolf Virtanen for an excellent flow.

Listen to „The Stranger“ for example. It starts fiercely with strong riffs and a gritty bass, then moves into a cautious interlude, only to reveal a mega chorus that is grippingly delivered in epic despair with immense power. Pure emotion that floods my soul. Beautiful and very poignant in its own intense way! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard this song because it just touches me so much.

DIABLO honor us with their monster album „When All The Rivers Are Silent“! This is the most mature work of their career. The album hits the bull’s eye! There is nothing to criticize about this album. There is no song that is mediocre. Here a special moment is conjured up after the other. Turn on any song and it will grab you!

The sound offers a perfect entertaining mixture of creative drastic hardness and epic emotional moments. Singer Rainer Nygård gives himself versatile. The instrumental skills of the band are undeniably a masterpiece and the compositions are simply wonderfully conceived. I was completely convinced by the album in all respects. Praise and recognition for this masterpiece!

Das Album ‚When All The Rivers Are Silent‘ von DIABLO (Facebook) gehört für mich bisher zu den besten Alben in diesem Jahr 2022 und ist ein klarer Anwärter für das Album des Jahres (Review). Die Songs haben sich in meinem Kopf eingebrannt. Das Album ist in allen Belangen sensationell. Mir ist es ein absolutes Rätsel, dass die Band außerhalb von Finnland noch nicht richtig erfolgreich gewesen ist. An der Qualität der Musik kann es jedenfalls nicht liegen. In Finnland stürmen sie mit ihren Alben immer wieder aufs neue die Charts. Das neue Album ist eine Macht und sollte Brücken in andere Länder schlagen.

Erfolgreicher Start des Albums?

MH: Euer Album „When All The Rivers Are Silent“ ist erst seit kurzer Zeit erhältlich. Habt ihr es gebührend gefeiert?

HEIKKI (Drums): Wir hatten gerade gestern (11. März) unsere erste Show zur Unterstützung von „When All the Rivers are Silent“, und heute Abend haben wir die zweite. Danach werden wir höchstwahrscheinlich ein bisschen feiern, weil der nächste Tag ein freier Tag ist.

MH: Also, ihr habt ‚metal-heads.de‘ mit ‚WATRAS‘ voll überzeugt. Für mich ist es in der Beliebtheitsskala meiner Bestenliste für das Jahr 2022 schon sehr weit vorne. Wie habt ihr das wahrgenommen? Wie ist das Album bisher bei den Fans angekommen?

HEIKKI: Nun, WATRAS ist im Moment die Nummer eins der offiziellen finnischen Albumcharts, also können wir uns nicht beschweren, oder?!

DIABLO möchten auch international

MH: In Finnland seid ihr sehr bekannt und habt dort eine wahnsinnig starke Fanbase. In Europa lief es lange Zeit nicht so gut, oder? Kannst du die Gründe dafür erklären? Ich denke, an der musikalischen Qualität kann es nicht gelegen haben. Hat sich das in der Zwischenzeit geändert?

MARKO (guitar): Leider nicht! Wir sind seit 2010 nicht mehr außerhalb Finnlands getourt. Das könnte der Hauptgrund dafür sein. Aber mal sehen, ob sich mit dem neuen Album etwas ändert. Wir würden uns sehr freuen, wenn wir die Chance bekommen, außerhalb Finnlands zu touren.

MH: DIABLO wurde 1995 gegründet. Die Zeit bringt viele Veränderungen mit sich. Globale Dinge verändern sich, das Musikgeschäft, private Umstände und auch ihr als einzelne Personen macht eine Entwicklung durch. Was waren damals Eure Ambitionen und Träume? Wie hat sich das im Laufe der Zeit verändert? Oder hat sich gar nicht so viel getan?

MARKO: Am Anfang war unser Ziel, einen Plattenvertrag zu bekommen und dann Live-Shows zu spielen, um unsere Karriere zu unterstützen. Nach einer Weile wollten wir dann auch auf Festivals spielen und so weiter. Am Anfang wollten wir unser Talent in der lokalen Metalszene zeigen. Heute wollen wir qualitativ hochwertigen Metal machen, der uns und unseren Fans gefällt.

Kategorisierung? Nein danke!

MH: Viele Bands mögen es nicht, kategorisiert zu werden. Es ist auch tatsächlich so, dass eine klare Kategorisierung heute viel schwieriger geworden ist, weil Bands viele verschiedene Stile in sich vereinen und Grenzen überschreiten. Wie würdet ihr eure eigene musikalische Entwicklung beschreiben? Bedeutet Entwicklung automatisch immer auch Veränderung?

MARKO: Wir sind keine Ausnahme von dieser Regel. Kategorisierungen sind scheiße! Unglücklicherweise war eine unklare Kategorisierung auch ein Hindernis für unsere Karriere außerhalb Finnlands. Die Musik von Diablo war schon immer etwas schwierig zu kategorisieren, weil wir Elemente aus verschiedenen Metal-Stilen kombiniert haben, um die Suppe nach unserem Geschmack zu kochen.  Ich denke, Entwicklung bedeutet immer ein gewisses Maß an Veränderung. Man kann einfach nicht immer wieder den gleichen Song komponieren. Wenn ich mich an sehr strenge „künstlerische Regeln“ innerhalb eines Genres halten müsste, würde ich mich ziemlich schnell langweilen und etwas anderes machen.

Das Cover und der Albumtitel

MH: Euer Cover ist sehr ungewöhnlich gestaltet, vor allem in Bezug auf die Farbgebung und die Art und Weise, wie es präsentiert wird. Was für eine Idee und Bedeutung verbirgt sich dahinter?

RAINER (vocals, guitar): Dieses Mal stand das Element Wasser im Vordergrund, wenn es um das Artwork und die Texte ging. Ich und Marko kommen aus Kalajoki (Kala = Fisch, joki = Fluss auf Englisch), einer kleinen Stadt am Ufer des Bottnischen Meerbusens. Die Landschaft dort ist für mich als Person sehr wichtig und ich wollte sie mit dem Kunstwerk verbinden. Als ich noch ein Kind war, hat mich das Meer fast in seine Tiefen gezogen.

MH: Der Titel des neuen Albums ist „When All The Rivers Are Silent“ (WATRAS)! Ein mystischer Titel. Was bedeutet er?

HEIKKI: Die Idee ist, dass alle Flüsse aufhören zu fließen, wenn der Meeresspiegel genug ansteigt. Das bedeutet im Grunde das Ende der Welt. Daher „Wenn alle Flüsse schweigen“.

Das Leben ist nicht immer schön

MH: Du hast über das Album gesagt, dass das Leben nicht immer ein „Happy End“ hat. Das klingt nach einer sehr bitteren Weisheit. Was hat dich zu dieser Sichtweise geführt? Sind alle Songs das Ergebnis von persönlichen Lebenserfahrungen?

RAINER: Du musst das nicht so wörtlich nehmen. Ich bin ein labiler und zynischer Mensch, und ich habe viel darunter gelitten. Ich habe in meinem früheren Leben zu viel Drama erlebt, ohne es wirklich zu suchen. Einige dieser schmerzhaften Erfahrungen sind in dieses Album eingeflossen. 

Emotionen

MH: Ich halte WATRAS für das emotionalste Album in eurer Bandgeschichte. Diese Emotionalität basiert hauptsächlich auf dem Gesang, der eine wahnsinnig intensive Ausstrahlung hat. Ich finde, dass sich der Gesang gesteigert hat, vor allem in den melodischen Ausdrucksformen. Wie seht Ihr das? Was sind die Gründe dafür?

RAINER: Ich habe die Entscheidung getroffen, dass ich versuche, so viel Ehrlichkeit in meinen Gesang und meine Texte zu legen wie möglich. Ich bin ein großer Fan von Outlaw-Country-Musik, und der lyrische Inhalt spricht mich sehr an. Ich wollte einfach etwas Ähnliches von meinem persönlichen Standpunkt aus versuchen.

Der hohe Anspruch an sich selbst

MH: Aber nicht nur stimmlich habe ich eine deutliche Steigerung festgestellt. Auch bei den Kompositionen musste ich feststellen, dass sie viel ausgefeilter und mit mehr Liebe zum Detail erscheinen. Gab es beim Songwriting dieses Albums irgendetwas, das anders war als bei den Alben davor?

MARKO: Ich habe mir zwei Ziele gesetzt, nachdem ich die Songs von Silver Horizon bei Live-Auftritten gespielt hatte: 1. kürzere Songs schreiben und 2. die Songstrukturen etwas einfacher gestalten. Mit diesen Zielen im Hinterkopf war der Prozess des Songwritings an sich so ziemlich derselbe wie bei den vorherigen Alben. Das „polierte“ Gefühl ist wahrscheinlich auf den Perfektionismus zurückzuführen, den ich habe, wenn es ums Komponieren geht. Ich hasse es einfach, etwas zu veröffentlichen, von dem ich nicht zu 100% überzeugt bin.

MH: Marko, Du bist der Haupt-Songwriter. Ist die moderne Technologie eine große Hilfe beim Komponieren von Songs? Wie siehst Du die technische Entwicklung in der Metal-Musik?

MARKO: Die Technologie hilft sehr, denn man kann in seinem Heimstudio Demos erstellen, die bereits sehr hochwertig sind. Mit hochwertigen Demobändern und der Vorproduktion hat man bereits ein klares Bild davon, wie das Album klingen wird. Wir leben alle in verschiedenen Städten, daher ist es jetzt mit schnellen Internetverbindungen sehr einfach, Demobänder zu verschicken.

Qualität vor Quantität

 MH: Zwischen dem letzten Album „Silver Horizon“ (2015) und „When All The Rivers Are Silent“ (2022) liegen ganze sieben Jahre, genau wie zwischen „Ikaros“ (2008) und „Silver Horizon“. Da fragt sich natürlich jeder: Warum diese langen Pausen?

MARKO: Unser Plan war es nicht, Platten in einem so langsamen Tempo zu veröffentlichen. Aber wenn man älter wird und eine Familie mit all den Verpflichtungen hat, ist es nicht so einfach, genug Zeit zum Songschreiben zu finden. Unser Ziel war es immer, Alben mit hoher musikalischer Qualität zu machen. Wenn man also abwägen muss zwischen schneller Veröffentlichung und qualitativ hochwertigen Songs, neigen wir dazu, Letzteres zu tun.

Ich glaube, unsere Fans wissen das auch zu schätzen. Ich meine, unsere Fans wissen, dass unsere Veröffentlichungen immer hörenswert sind. Das Gleiche gilt auch für unsere aktuelles Album. Man sollte es sich von Anfang bis Ende anhören, nicht nur die Songs, die als Singles veröffentlicht wurden.

MH: Wie sieht es dieses Jahr mit Auftritten außerhalb Finnlands aus? Gibt es dafür irgendwelche Pläne?

MARKO: Noch nichts an dieser Front. Hoffentlich wird das neue Album auch außerhalb Finnlands gut aufgenommen und das würde dann zu einer Tour führen.  Mein Traum ist es, die Chance zu bekommen, auf großen Metal-Festivals in Europa zu spielen!

Metal heroes in Finland

The album ‚When All The Rivers Are Silent‘ by DIABLO (Facebook) is for me one of the best albums so far in this year 2022 and a clear contender for the album of the year (Review). The songs got stuck in my head. This album is sensational in all aspects. It is an absolute mystery to me that the band has not yet been really successful outside of Finland. In any case, it can’t be because of their music. In Finland they storm the charts again and again with their albums. The new album is a mighty and should build bridges to other countries.

MH: Hello DIABLO! I would like to start the interview in a different way. I have some pictures here and would like to have the first thoughts that come to your mind about each one.

Successfull start with the album?

MH: Your album ‚When All The Rivers Are Silent‘ has been released for a short time. Did you celebrate it properly?

HEIKKI: We actually had our first show in support of „When All the Rivers are Silent“ just yesterday (11^th of March), and tonight we have the second one. After that we’re gonna, more than likely, celebrate a bit, because the following day is a day off.

MH: Well, you have completely convinced ‚metal-heads.de‘ with ‚WATRAS‘. For me it is already very far in front in the popularity scale of my best list for the year 2022. How has the album been received by the fans so far?

HEIKKI:  Well, WATRAS is the number one on the official Finnish albums chart right now so we can’t complain, can we?!?

The problem outside Finland

MH: In Finland you’re well known and have an insanely strong fanbase there. In Europe it didn’t go so good for a long time, did it? Can you explain the reasons? I think it can’t have been due to the musical quality. Has that changed in the meantime?

MARKO: Unfortunately not! We haven’t toured outside Finland since 2010, so that is the main reason for that. But let’s see if the new album changes anything. We’ve would be very happy if we get the chance to tour outside Finland.

MH: DIABLO was founded in 1995. Time brings a lot of change. Global things change, the music business, private circumstances and you as individual persons also go through a development. What were your ambitions and dreams back then? How has that changed over time?

MARKO: At first, our goal was to get a record deal and then play live shows to support our career. After a while, we wanted to do some outdoor festivals and so on. At the beginning we were eager to show our talent to the local metal scene. Today we want to make quality metal to please ourselves and our fans.

No categories!

MH: Many bands don’t like categorization. It’s also actually the case that a clear categorization has become much more difficult now, because bands incorporate many different styles and cross borders. How would you describe your own musical development? Does development automatically always mean change? How strong can a change be without becoming unfaithful to yourself as a band?

MARKO: We are no exception to that rule. Categorizations suck! Unfortunately, unclear categorization might have also been a drag to our career outside Finland. Diablo’s music has always been a bit difficult to categorize, because we have combined elements from different styles of metal to make the soup to our taste.  I think development always means change to some extent. You just can’t compose the same song over and over again. If I would need to stick to very strict “artistic rules” inside a genre I would get bored pretty fast and do something else.

Meaning of cover and albumtitle

MH: Your cover is very unusually designed, especially in terms of the color scheme and the way it is presented. What kind of idea and meaning is hidden behind it?

RAINER: This time water as an element was the big picture when it comes to artwork and lyrics. Me and Marko are from Kalajoki (Kala = Fish joki = river in English), a small town on the shore of the Gulf of Bothnia. That landscape there is very important to me as a person and I wanted to connect it to the artwork. When I was just a child that sea almost took me into its depths.

MH: The title of the new album is „When All The Rivers Are Silent“! A mystical title. What does it mean?

HEIKKI: The idea is that if the sea level rises enough, all the rivers will stop running. That basically means the end of the world. Hence „When All the Rivers Are Silent“.

Life is’nt always happy

MH: You had said about the album that life doesn’t always have ‚happy endings‘. That sounds like a very bitter wisdom. What led you to this point of view? Are all the songs the result of personal life experiences?

RAINER: You don’t have to take it that literally. I’m kind of an unstable and cynical person and I have suffered a lot because of that. I have faced too much drama in my former life without actually trying to seek it. Some of those painful experiences are extracted to this album. 

Emotions

MH: I consider WATRAS to be the most emotional album in your band’s history. This emotionality is mainly based on the vocals, which have an insanely intense charisma. I think that the singing has increased, especially in the melodic expressions. How do you see that?

RAINER:  I made the decision that I try to put as much honesty to my singing and lyrics as possible. I’m a big fan of outlaw country music and that lyrical content resonates to me big time. I just wanted to try something similar from my own personal point of view.

The high demand

MH: But not only vocally have I noticed a considerable increase. Also with the compositions I had to notice that they appear much more polished and with more attention to detail. Was there anything different in the songwriting of this album compared to the albums before it?

MARKO: I set two goals to myself after playing the songs from Silver Horizon on live gigs: 1. Write shorter songs and 2. make song structures a bit easier. So, with these goals in mind the song-writing process itself was pretty much the same as with the previous albums. The “polished” feeling is probably due to the perfectionism that I have when it comes to composing. I just hate to release anything that I’m not 100% convinced myself.

MH: Marko, you are the main songwriter. Is modern technology a big help in composing songs? How do you see the technical development in Metal music?

MARKO: Technology helps a lot, because you can create demos at your home studio which are already very high quality. With quality demo tapes and pre-production you already have clear picture of what the album will sound like. We all live in different cities, so sending demo tapes is very easy now with fast internet connections.

Quaility more than quantity

MH: There are a whole seven years between the previous album „Silver Horizon“ (2015) and „When All The Rivers Are Silent“ (2022), just like between „Ikaros“ (2008) and „Silver Horizon“. So of course everyone asks: Why these long breaks?

MARKO: Our plan was not to release records in such a slow pace. But when you get older and have a family with all the responsibilities it is not so easy to find enough time for song writing. Our goal has always been to make albums with high musical quality so if you need to balance between releasing faster versus making quality songs we tend to do the latter. I think our fans also appreciate that. I mean, our fans know that when we release something it is always worth listening! The same applies also to our latest release. You should listen to it from start to finish, not just the songs that were released as singles.

MH: What about gigs outside Finland this year? Are there any plans for that?

MARKO: Nothing on that front yet. Hopefully the new album will be well received outside Finland too and that we would then lead to a tour.  My dream is to get the chance to play on big metal festivals in Europe!

Heavy Metal

Die finnische Band DIABLO (Facebook) besteht bereits seit 1995 und ist im Bereich Thrash Metal gestartet. Mittlerweile hat sich das musikalische Erscheinungsbild erweitert und man kann sie eher im kreativen Meer des Heavy Metal einordnen. Allerdings handelt es sich hier um eine harte düstere Interpretation. Manche mögen es auch als Melodic Death Metal nennen. Das letzte Album „Silver Horizon“ erreichte 2015 Platz 1 der finnischen Album Charts, aber auch die früheren Alben waren in den Charts keine Unbekannten. Nach langen sieben Jahren wurde nun am 25.02.2022 der neue Longplayer „When All The Rivers Are Silent“ veröffentlicht.

Rainer Nygård (Gesang, Gitarre) sagt über das Album folgendes:

Im Grunde ist das Album eine ehrliche und gnadenlose Geschichtensammlung über einen Menschen, der den Tiefpunkt in seinem geistigen Leben erreicht hat. Jetzt ist es zwingend notwendig, entweder die Scherben aufzusammeln oder mit seinem früheren Lebensstil unterzugehen. Im Auge des Sturms sind Entscheidungen immer schwer zu treffen, wenn man ein labiler Süchtiger ist und obendrein von allen möglichen Versuchungen umgeben ist. Im wirklichen Leben gibt es keine Hollywood-Enden, egal, was ‚Sunrise Avenue‘ singt. Ich habe das auf meine Art gemacht.

Das Album ist eine Wucht

Auch wenn alle anderen Album immer top Platzierungen in den Charts erreichen konnten, so muss ich mit aller Bewunderung sagen, dass dieses Album alles bisherigen übertrifft. Erst vor kurzem kam das neue super Album „Halo“ von AMORPHIS raus. Von daher bin ich jetzt gerade etwas verwöhnt. DIABLO spielen nicht mit ganz so extravaganten Elementen wie AMORPHIS. Hier konzentriert man sich vorrangig auf die klassischen Metal-Elemente und geht die Sache reduzierter an. Dies soll aber nicht den Eindruck erwecken, dass die Songs weniger massiv und interessant klingen. Ganz und gar nicht! Der Opener „The Well Of Grief“ ist eine

offensive Ansage,

denn zum Einstieg gibt es eine Trommelfeuer vom Allerfeinsten. Begleitet von einem Piano gibt Heikki Malmberg an den Drums schon mal eine Kostprobe von seinen grandiosen furiosen Fähigkeiten, die das ganze Album prägen und für Begeisterung sorgen. Das Drumming wird von Minute zu Minute beeindruckender. Absolute Bestleistung! Zum Glück fällt die Leistung der anderen Mitstreiter nicht dahinter zurück. Hier stimmt einfach alles! Die kraftvolle charismatische Stimme von Sänger Rainer Nygård klingt besser als je zuvor. „The Well Of Grief“ ist ein wahres Biest und im Solopart verfällt das Biest in pure Raserei. Eskalierende Drums und zerfetzende Gitarrenangriffe überwältigen den Hörer. So viel zur ersten Offenbarung! Aber damit wurde nur der Startschuß für weitere überwältigende Songs getätigt.

Geile Riffs

prägen auch den Song „Grace Under Pressure“, der sich mit einem lockeren Drive aufpumpt und in fließenden Übergängen noch mal gehörig an Tempo zulegt. Hier gefällt mir auch die Vielschichtigkeit in dem Song, der mich plötzlich mit einem episch melodischen Refrain einfängt. Und wieder darf ich ein klangvolles Gitarrensolo genießen. Im Anschluss erfolgt eine kurze bedächtigen Phase, die sich wieder langsam in den kraftvollen epischen Part ergießt. Ein ergreifender Song!

Monotonie ist ein Fremdwort

für dieses Album. Die individuelle Handschrift von DIABLO ist durchweg klar hörbar. Dabei zeigen sie sich wunderbar facettenreich. Düstere druckvolle Passagen messen sich mit melodischen Einlagen, wobei die kraftvolle Entfaltung nicht aus den Augen verloren wird. Die Gitarren werden phänomenal bespielt, egal ob es die bestechenden Riffs, die großartigen Leads oder die imposanten Gitarrensolos betrifft. „Titan“ macht da keine Ausnahme!

Ein dunkles Ereignis

epischen Ausmaßes breitet sich beim Song „The Stranger“ aus. Es beginnt heftig mit starken Riffs und einem kernigen Bass, wechsel dann in einen behutsamen Zwischenpart, um dann einen megamäßigen Refrain zu offenbaren, der in epischer Verzweiflung mit einer immensen Kraft ergreifend dargeboten wird. Emotionen pur, die meine Seele überfluten. Wunderschön!

Fazit

DIABLO beehren uns mit ihrem monstermäßigen Album „When All The Rivers Are Silent“! Dabei muss man vom ausgereiftesten Werk ihrer Karriere reden. Das Album trifft voll ins Schwarze! An diesem Album gibt es nichts auszusetzen. Es gibt keinen Song, der Mittelmaß ist. Hier wird ein besonderer Moment nach dem anderen hervorgezaubert. Mach irgendeinen Song an und er wird dich packen!

Der Sound bietet eine perfekte unterhaltsame Mischung aus kreativer drastische Härte und epischen emotionalen Momenten. Dabei gibt sich Sänger Rainer Nygård vielseitig. Die instrumentalen Fähigkeiten der Band sind unbestritten eine Meisterleistung und die Kompositionen sind einfach wunderbar konzipiert. So komme ich nicht umhin und muss dieser Leistung meinen uneingeschränkten Respekt zollen. Schon jetzt ist mir klar, dass dieses Album in meiner Top Liste des Jahres 2022 erscheinen wird. Dieses Album zu übertreffen dürfte schwer fallen.

Melodic Death Metal

The Finnish band DIABLO (Facebook) exists already since 1995 and started with Thrash Metal. Meanwhile, the musical appearance has expanded and you can rather classify them in the creative sea of Heavy Metal with a hard gloomy interpretation. Some may also call it melodic death metal. The last album „Silver Horizon“ reached #1 in the Finnish album charts in 2015, but also the earlier albums were not unknown in the charts. After a long seven years, the new album „When All The Rivers Are Silent“ has now been released.

Rainer Nygård (vocals, guitar) says the following about the album:

Basically the album is an honest and merciless story collection about a person who has reached the rock bottom in his spiritual life. Now it is mandatory to either pick up the bits and pieces or to go down under with his former way of life. Decisions are always hard to make in the eye of the storm when you’re an unstable addict and on top of everything surrounded by all kind of temptations. There are no Hollywood endings in real life no matter what Sunrise Avenue is singing. I did this my way

This album is a blast

Even if all other albums could always reach top positions in the charts, I must say with all admiration that this album surpasses all previous ones. Only recently came out the new super album „Halo“ from AMORPHIS. Therefore I am a bit spoiled right now. DIABLO do not play with such extravagant elements as AMORPHIS. Here they concentrate primarily on the classic metal elements and approach the matter more reduced. But this should not give the impression that the songs sound less massive and interesting. Not at all! The opener „The Well Of Grief“ is a

powerful start.

It begins with a hot drum fire. Accompanied by a piano, Heikki Malmberg already gives a taste of his grandiose furious drumming skills, which characterize the whole album and cause enthusiasm song after song. The drumming gets more impressive by the minute. Absolute awesome! Fortunately, the performance of the other members does not fall behind. Everything is just right here! The powerful charismatic voice of singer Rainer Nygård sounds better than ever. „The Well Of Grief“ is a true beast and in the solo part the beast goes really wild. Escalating drums and shredding guitar attacks overwhelm the listener. So much for the first revelation! But this is only the start for more overwhelming songs.

Smashing riffs

also characterize the song „Grace Under Pressure“, which pumps up with a loose drive and in flowing transitions increases the speed. Here I also like the complexity in the song, which suddenly catches me with an fantastic melodic chorus. And again I may enjoy a sonorous guitar solo. This is followed by a short thoughtful phase, which again slowly pours into the powerful epic part. A poignant song!

Monotony is a foreign word

for this album. The individual signature of DIABLO is clearly audible throughout. They show themselves wonderfully multifaceted. Gloomy powerful passages compete with melodic interludes, while the powerful unfolding is not lost sight of. The guitars are played phenomenally, whether it concerns the captivating riffs, the great leads or the imposing guitar solos. „Titan“ is no exception!

A dark event

of epic proportions spreads in the song „The Stranger“. It begins violently with strong riffs and a gritty bass! It follows a cautious intermediate part, to then reveal a awesome chorus, which is presented in epic despair with a insane power poignant. Pure emotion that floods my soul. Beautiful!

Conclusion

DIABLO honor us with their monster album „When All The Rivers Are Silent“! Thereby one must speak of the most mature work of their career. The album hits the bull’s eye! There is nothing to criticize about this album. There is no mediocore song. One special moment after the other is conjured up here. Turn on any song and it will grab you!

The sound offers a perfect entertaining mixture of creative drastic hardness and fantastic emotional moments. The singing of Rainer Nygård is wonderful versatile. The instrumental skills of the band are undeniably a masterpiece and the compositions are simply outstanding conceived. So I can not help but pay my unqualified respect to this achievement. It is already clear to me that this album will appear in my top list of 2022. To surpass this album should be not so easy at all.
