Willkommen zur zweiten Ausgabe der METALHEADs Toplist 2024, in der ich zwei Kategorien unter einen Hut packe. Heute stehen Power Metal und Heavy Metal auf dem Programm. Ihr werdet wieder feststellen, dass in meiner persönlichen Topliste stilistisch sehr unterschiedliche Bands vereint habe. Und dieses Mal findet sich mit JUDAS PRIEST auch eine Band wieder, mit der ich aufgewachsen bin und die zu den Bands gehört, die Legendenstatus genießen. Aber beginnen möchte ich mit einer Band, die stilistisch gaaanz weit weg von JUDAS PRIEST sind. Sie klingen sehr modern und haben wirklich einen ganz eigenen Sound für sich erschaffen. Ehrlicherweise ist es unheimlich schwer diese Band in irgendeine bestimmte Kategorie zu packen.

TUNGSTEN „The Grand Inferno“

TUNGSTEN haben kräftig an ihrem Sound gefeilt und dadurch ist es ihnen gelungen mit ihrem Album „The Grand Inferno“ auf das nächste Level zu springen. Die Musik mit ihren teils recht düsteren Texten ist innovativ und speziell, dabei gleichzeitig höchst unterhaltsam. So haben TUNGSTEN ihre eigene Nische gefunden. Die elf Songs bieten eine sehr eigenwillige, aber faszinierende Mischung aus verschiedenen Metalsounds, wodurch sie ihrem Sound zwischendurch auch eine stattliche Portion Power eingeflöst haben. Trotzdem bewahren sie sich die Fähigkeit fantastische Melodiebögen zu erschaffen, die sich wunderbar einschmeicheln. Ihr Sound ist interessanter und vielfältiger geworden und strotzt nur so vor Ideen. Diese Ideen entsprechen sicherlich nicht einem konventionellen Soundkonzept, aber das wollen TUNGSTEN ja auch gar nicht. „The Grand Inferno“ ist ein sehr inspirierendes Album! (Review)

BOMBUS „Your Blood“

BOMBUS liefern ebenfalls einen ganz eigenen Sound, der sich irgendwo zwischen hartem Rock und packendem Heavy Metal verortet und somit ebenfalls nicht eindeutig einzuordnen sind. Mit dem Album „Your Blood“ ist ihnen jedenfalls ein großartiges Album mit einem innovativen Mix gelungen. Retro und Moderne verbinden sich auf faszinierende Weise und bieten ein lebendiges erfrischendes Set an hochkarätigen Songs, die trotz neuer Ideen die alten Zeiten der Band nicht vermissen lassen. Mir gefallen die Kontraste im Sound, welche teilweise die Songs auf interessante Weise beleben.  Es gibt aber kein Standardrezept, mit dem BOMBUS hier agieren. Sie haben sich wirklich viel einfallen lassen. Die Songs haben eine intensive Atmosphäre, die immer so eine gewisse melancholische Aggressivität ausstrahlt. (Review)

RIFFORIA „Axeorcism“

RIFFORIA entfesseln mit „Axeorcism“ ein teuflisch geiles Debüt. Die Songs sind top arrangiert und bieten von Anfang bis Ende hervorragende Unterhaltung. Instrumental wird auf hohem Niveau und mit viel Power ein höllisches Heavy-Metal-Feuerwerk abgefeuert während Sänger Nils Patrik Johansson eine super Performance abliefert, die dem Ganzen noch eine ganz spezielle dämonische Note verleiht. Jedoch ist es nicht nur der Geschwindigkeitsrausch das Merkmal, welches das Album ausmacht. Es sind vielmehr die ausgezeichnet arrangierten Songs, die mit viel Power und Energie spielen, um durchweg für lebendige Unterhaltung zu sorgen ohne sich selber zu wiederholen. Das Riffing und die Solos sind einfach nur ein Genuß. Frederic an den Drums ist ein echtes Biest und befeuert den Sound ungezügelt temperamentvoll. (Review)

IVORY TOWER „Heavy Rain“

IVORY TOWER nehmen euch ab dem ersten Song mit voller Power mit. „Black Rain“ macht keine Gefangenen und legt fulminant los. Da fühlt man sich direkt wohl und lässt sich gerne vom druckvollen satten Sound mitreißen. Der energiegeladene Chorus macht ebenfalls alles richtig. Total geil, wenn der Song kurzfristig in ein strammes Marschiertempo übergeht, um anschließend ein fulminantes Gitarrensolo abzufackeln, dass in einem ekstatischen Shredderangriff gipfelt.

Der Sound ist nicht nur im Opener sehr wuchtig und energiegeladen, sondern zieht sich durch das gesamte Album, das mit einer üppigen Spielzeit von fast einer Stunde ausgestattet ist. Sogar eine Power Ballade wie „Never“ hat einen überaus kraftvollen Auftritt, der zu überzeugen weiß. Neben der ohnehin einwandfreien handwerklichen Leistung haben mir die Gitarrensolos besonders gut gefallen. Sie klingen nicht immer gleich, sondern sind fein auf den Song abgestimmt und harmonieren wundervoll mit den Songs. Ein Highlight ist sicherlich auch das mit sieben Minuten ausufernde progressive „The Destination“. Das Album „Heavy Rain“ ist unbedingt hörenswert! (Review)

DARK EMBRACE „Land Of Witches“

Nun geht es mit DARK EMBRACE und ihrem Album „Land Of Witches“ in die härteren und dunkleren Gefilde des Heavy Metal. DARK EMBRACE überzeugen mit „Land Of Witches“ wieder auf ganzer Linie. Sie haben ihre eigene individuelle musikalische Ausprägung vom letzten Album beibehalten und weiterentwickelt, um sich weiterhin von der Masse abzuheben. „Land Of Witches“ ist super produziert und DARK EMBRACE offerieren eine schöne Auslese an hochwertigen mitreißenden Songs.

„We, The Witches“ ist wieder ein Opener, der kräftig auf das Gaspedal drückt. In bester Thrash Metal Manier prügelt der Song voran. Die Drums galoppieren unermüdlich und Sänger Oscar fegt wieder mit seinem eigenwilligen Vocal Mix durch den Song. Doch tatsächlich scheint er weiter an seinem Gesang gearbeitet zu haben, denn mir fallen auch gewisse harmonische Parts auf, die den Sound nun bereichern. Generell legen DARK EMBRACE Wert auf treibende Songs mit viel Dynamik. Dies impliziert zumeist ein hohes Tempo. Die Ausstrahlung der Songs weist aber auch Unterschiede auf. Hier seien beispielhaft mal die Songs „My Darkest End“ und „Never Betray You“ gegenübergestellt. Während „My Darkest End“ sich mit vielen Melodien hervortut und in der zweiten Songhälfte mit einem ausgiebigen Gitarrensolopart daherkommt, zeigt „Never Betray You“ die dunkle wilde Seite von DARK EMBRACE mit einem hohen Maß an wütender Aggression. (Review)

LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT „Darkness“

Ein höllisch starker Sound wird vom Start weg bei der Eröffnung mit „No Control“ entfacht. Ich kam zunächst gar nicht weiter mit dem Hören des Albums, da ich mir erst einmal den Opener einige Male anhören musste, weil er mich so begeisterte. Was für ein Hammer! Ein Song, der sofort gnadenlos einschlägt und für offene Münder sorgt. So war es zumindest bei mir. Ein Meisterwerk, dass so wahnsinnig viel zu bieten hat. Schon der Einstieg ist super gelungen und vermittelt eine dunkle majestätische Ausstrahlung. Dann geht es erst so richtig los. Die Riffs sind schwer und niederschmetternd. Ein Härtegrad, den ich so wirklich nicht vorhergesehen habe. Dann geht der Song auch noch knallhart in den Vollgasmodus. Geile fließende Tempiwechsel begeistern mich und plötzlich ertönt ein wundervoller kraftvoller Chorus. Aber die dunkle Härte gewinnt wieder die Oberhand und fegt über mich hinweg. Ein starkes Solo setzt dem Ganzen noch die Krone auf.

Mir gefallen hier auch vor allem die Vocals von Henning. Der kann nicht nur „schön“ singen, sondern auch herrlich düster mit fiesen Tönen überraschen, wie man es z.B. beim Song „Hate“ hören kann.  Sänger Henning Basse eignet sich demnach sowohl für den rauen harten Sound, als auch für die gefühlvollen Verwöhnmomente. Die SAVATAGE-Vibes sind dann vor allem sehr präsent, wenn das Piano erklingt und die gefühlsintensive Theatralik Einzug erhält. In diesem Zusammenhang muss man die gefühlvolle Pianoballade „Let The River Flow“, die monstermäßige Powerballade „Leave Me Alone“ nennen, welche mit gefühlvollen traumhaften Arrangements aufwarten kann. STRIKER „Ultrapower“

Wie sagt man beim Bowling, wenn man alle Pins mit einem Wurf abräumt? Es ist ein Strike! STRIKER ist mit ihrem Album „Ultrapower“ ein super Strike gelungen. Alle Songs auf diesem Album sind echte Hits! Jeder Song hat seinen eigenen Charakter und rockt was das Zeug hält. Es ist eine wunderbare Hommage an die 80’er Jahre. Ich würde sagen: Der STRIKER-Motor läuft auf Hochtouren! STRIKER gönnen dem V8 Motor kaum Erholungspausen. Häufig kennen nur sie nur berauschende Geschwindigkeiten oder drehen heiße Donuts. „Ready For Anything“ jedenfalls dröhnt mit Höchstgeschwindigkeit voran und kennt nur eine Richtung. Da qualmen die Reifen und der Asphalt brennt. (Review)

JUDAS PRIEST „Invincible Shield“

Wir kehren zurück zum klassischen Heavy Metal. JUDAS PRIEST haben dieses Genre von Anfang an geprägt. Das ist lange lange her, aber es fließt immer noch genügend Starkstrom durch die Blutbahnen von JUDAS PRIEST. Mit ihrem 19. Album „Invincible Shield“ haben sie dieses Jahr für Begeisterung gesorgt. Und die Begeisterung bei den Fans hat schon seine Gründe, um genauer zu sagen 11 Gründe, welche starke Unterhaltung bieten. Bei der Deluxe Edition kommen sogar noch drei Songs dazu, wobei dann über eine Stunde feinster Heavy Metal geboten wird. Und wer meint, dass Rob Halford zum alten Eisen gehört und ihm langsam die Energie ausgeht, der kann sich direkt mit dem Opener „Panic Attacks“ eines besseren belehren lassen. „Nicht kleckern, sonder klotzen!“ ist die Devise! Unfassbar, mit was für einer Energie der Opener hier direkt für klare Verhältnisse sorgt und direkt ein loderndes Feuer entzündet. Superstarker Song! Der Wahnsinn, was Rob hier stimmlich immer noch zum Besten gibt. Und dann diese Gitarren…. einfach zum dahinschmelzen. Riffs, die nie aus der Mode kommen, gepaart mit überirdischen Solos sorgen für furiose Erlebnisse. Ich habe mich jedenfalls umgehend wohl gefühlt und mich mitreißen lassen. Dieses Gefühl hat mich auch auf dem gesamten Album nicht verlassen. JUDAS PRIEST toppen damit noch das starke Vorgängeralbum „Firepower“.

MANTICORA „Mycelium“

Ich hatte schon Anfang des Jahres, als das Album rauskam, prophezeit, dass es für mich auf jeden Fall in der Toplist 2024 landen wird. Ich habe das Album auch nicht vergessen, da es mich so beeindruckt hatte und so haben MANTICORA mit „Mycelium“ den Spitzenplatz erreicht. Es ist das extremste bzw. härteste Album in dieser Liste und eine Referenz im Sektor des harten epischen Heavy Metals. Melodien paaren sich mit gnadenlosen und hemmungslosen Attacken, die jeden Metal Fan entzücken werden. MANTICORA haben in allen Bereichen noch einmal getüftelt, um ihre Fähigkeiten so eindrucksvoll wie nie zu offenbaren. (Review)

Welcome to the second edition of METALHEAD’s Toplist 2024, in which I’m combining two categories. Today it’s about power metal and heavy metal. Once again, you’ll notice that my personal top list brings together bands with very different styles. With JUDAS PRIEST is a band involved that I grew up with and that is one of the legend bands, who knows really everybody in the world. But I would like to start with a band whose sound is very far away from JUDAS PRIEST. They sound very modern and have really created their very own sound. To be honest, it’s incredibly difficult to put this band into any particular category.

TUNGSTEN „The Grand Inferno“

TUNGSTEN have worked hard on their sound and have managed to jump to the next level with their album „The Grand Inferno“. The music with its sometimes quite dark lyrics is innovative and special, but at the same time highly entertaining. TUNGSTEN have found their own niche. The eleven songs offer a very idiosyncratic but fascinating mixture of different metal sounds, whereby they have also injected a good portion of power into their sound. Nevertheless, they retain the ability to create fantastic melodic arcs that are wonderfully ingratiating. Their sound has become more interesting and diverse and is bursting with ideas. These ideas certainly don’t correspond to a conventional sound concept, but that’s not what TUNGSTEN want. „The Grand Inferno“ is a very inspiring album! (Review)

BOMBUS „Your Blood“

BOMBUS also deliver their very own sound, which is located somewhere between hard rock and gripping heavy metal and therefore cannot be clearly categorized either. With the album „Your Blood“, they have certainly succeeded in creating a great album with an innovative mix. Retro and modern combine in a fascinating way and offer a lively, refreshing set of top-class songs that, despite new ideas, don’t miss the band’s older days. I like the contrasts in the sound, some of which enliven the songs in an interesting way.  However, there is no standard recipe with which BOMBUS operate here. They have really come up with a lot. The songs have an intense atmosphere that always radiates a certain melancholic aggressiveness. (Review)

RIFFORIA „Axeorcism“

RIFFORIA unleash a devilishly cool debut with „Axeorcism“. The songs are perfectly arranged and offer excellent entertainment from start to finish. Instrumentally, a hellish heavy metal firework is fired off at a high level and with a lot of power, while singer Nils Patrik Johansson delivers a great performance that gives the whole thing a very special demonic touch. However, it’s not just the frenzy of speed that makes the album stand out. Rather, it is the excellently arranged songs that play with a lot of power and energy to provide lively entertainment throughout without repeating themselves. The riffing and the solos are simply a pleasure. Frederic on drums is a real beast and fires up the sound with unbridled temperament. (Review)

IVORY TOWER „Heavy Rain“

IVORY TOWER take you away with full power from the very first song. „Black Rain“ takes no prisoners and gets off to a flying start. It makes you feel right at home and you’re happy to be carried away by the powerful, rich sound. The energetic chorus also does everything right. It’s totally cool when the song briefly switches to a tight marching tempo, only to then fire off a brilliant guitar solo that culminates in an ecstatic shredding attack.

The sound is not only very powerful and full of energy in the opener, but runs through the entire album, which has a generous playing time of almost an hour. Even a power ballad like „Never“ has an extremely powerful performance that knows how to convince. In addition to the already impeccable craftsmanship, I particularly liked the guitar solos. They don’t always sound the same, but are finely tuned to the song and harmonize wonderfully with the songs. Another highlight is certainly the seven-minute progressive „The Destination“. The album „Heavy Rain“ is definitely worth listening to! (Review)

DARK EMBRACE „Land Of Witches“

Now DARK EMBRACE and their album „Land Of Witches“ take us into the harder and darker realms of heavy metal. With „Land Of Witches“, DARK EMBRACE are once again convincing across the board. They have retained and further developed their own individual musical style from the last album in order to continue to stand out from the crowd. „Land Of Witches“ is superbly produced and DARK EMBRACE offer a fine selection of high-quality, captivating songs.

„We, The Witches“ is another opener that goes full throttle. The song pounds forward in best thrash metal manner. The drums gallop tirelessly and singer Oscar sweeps through the song again with his idiosyncratic vocal mix. But he seems to have worked on his vocals, because I also notice certain harmonic parts that now enrich the sound. In general, DARK EMBRACE emphasize driving songs with a lot of dynamics. This usually implies a high tempo. However, there are also differences in the aura of the songs. For example, the songs „My Darkest End“ and „Never Betray You“ are compared here. While „My Darkest End“ stands out with many melodies and features an extensive guitar solo part in the second half of the song, „Never Betray You“ shows the dark, wild side of DARK EMBRACE with a high degree of furious aggression. LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT „Darkness“

A hell of a sound is unleashed right from the start with the opening track „No Control“. I didn’t get any further with listening to the album at first, as I first had to listen to the opener a few times because it got me so excited. What a blast! The opening conveys a dark, majestic aura. Then the storm started. The riffs are heavy and devastating. A degree of heaviness that I really hadn’t anticipated. Then the song goes into full throttle mode. I’m thrilled by the cool, flowing tempo changes and suddenly a wonderfully powerful chorus is heard. But the dark heaviness gains the upper hand again and sweeps over me. A strong solo puts the crown on the whole thing.

I particularly like Henning’s vocals here. Not only can he sing „beautifully“, he can also surprise you with wonderfully dark and nasty tones, as you can hear in the song „Hate“, for example.  Singer Henning Basse is therefore suitable for both the rough, hard sound and the soulful, pampering moments. The SAVATAGE vibes are particularly present when the piano plays and the emotional theatrics come in. In this context, the soulful piano ballad „Let The River Flow“ and the monster-like power ballad „Leave Me Alone“, which boasts soulful, dreamlike arrangements, must be mentioned. (Review)

STRIKER „Ultrapower“

What do you say in bowling when you clear all the pins with one throw? It’s a strike! STRIKER have achieved a super strike with their album „Ultrapower“. All the songs on this album are real hits! Every song has its own character and rocks like crazy. It’s a wonderful homage to the 80s. I would say: The STRIKER engine is running at full speed! STRIKERs hardly give the V8 engine a break. They are often the only ones who know exhilarating speeds or spinning hot donuts. In any case, „Ready For Anything“ roars along at top speed and knows only one direction. The tires smoke and the asphalt burns. (Review)

JUDAS PRIEST „Invincible Shield“

We continue with classic heavy metal. JUDAS PRIEST have shaped this genre from the very beginning, co-founded it so to speak. That was a long time ago, but there is still plenty of heavy current flowing through the bloodstream of JUDAS PRIEST. With their 19th album „Invincible Shield“, they have generated a lot of enthusiasm this year. And the enthusiasm of the fans has its reasons, 11 reasons to be precise, which offer great entertainment. The Deluxe Edition even comes with three additional songs, offering over an hour of the finest heavy metal.

And anyone who thinks that Rob Halford is getting on in years and is slowly running out of energy will be proven wrong with the opener „Panic Attacks“. It’s unbelievable how much energy the opener immediately creates clear conditions and lights a blazing fire. Super strong song! They throw everything in. It’s amazing what Rob is still able to do vocally here. And then these guitars…. awesome. Riffs that never go out of fashion paired with unearthly solos make for furious experiences. In any case, I immediately felt at ease and let myself be carried away. This feeling never left me on the entire album. JUDAS PRIEST even top the strong previous album „Firepower“.

MANTICORA „Mycelium“

I had already predicted at the beginning of the year when the album came out that it would definitely end up in my 2024 top list. I didn’t forget the album because it impressed me so much and so MANTICORA reached the top spot with „Mycelium“. It is the most extreme or heaviest album in this list and a reference in the sector of hard epic heavy metal. Melodies are paired with merciless and unrestrained attacks that will delight every metal fan. MANTICORA have once again tinkered in all areas to reveal their skills more impressively than ever. LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT (Facebook) ist ein weiteres Projekt von Jens Faber, der mit DAWN OF DESTINY schon sehr lange erfolgreich im Musikbusiness am Start ist. Mit LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT huldigt er der legendären Band ‚Savatage‘. „Sorrow Is The Cure“ und „Hell“ sind bisher erschienen. In meinem Review zu „Hell“ habe ich unter anderem bemerkt:

Die inspirierenden Momente, die an Savatage erinnern, sind zweifelsohne vorhanden, doch sie sind Nuancen in einem Sound, der sich seine Eigenständigkeit bewahrt.

Ich bin sehr froh, dass diese Herangehensweise weiterhin in das Songwriting eingeflossen ist. Nach einem so starken Alben bisher sind die Erwartungshaltungen dementsprechend hoch. Ich mag den Stil und die Herangehensweise von Jens Faber. Die Handschrift von ihm kann man immer heraushören, aber er lotet auch gerne Grenzen aus und ist damit offen für neue musikalische Perspektiven. Jens Faber und seiner Band LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT ist es auf jeden Fall gelungen den Erwartungen gerecht zu werden und sogar darüber hinaus. Es gibt in der Tat einen eine Menge genialer Songs auf diesem Album. Das neue Album „Darkness“ setzt noch mal einen drauf. Und ich möchte sagen, dass LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT ihre musikalische Mission weiter perfektioniert haben.

Was soll ich sagen? Schon der erste Song liefert so viele geile Eindrücke, dass ich völlig hin und weg bin. Nachdem ich dann den Song fünfmal gehört habe, schaffte ich es tatsächlich weiter auf die Reise zu gehen. Damit hat der Opener seine Aufgabe, nämlich von Anfang an die Begeisterung für das Album zu entflammen, mehr als erfüllt. Doch ich muss zugeben, dass ich mir nicht vorstellen konnte, wie man das Level halten könnte.

Der zweite Song „Rebirth“ geht die Reise dann doch gemächlicher an. Geile Riffs, erzählerische Parts und ein majestätischer Chorus prägen diesen Song, der kurzfristig während des Gitarrensolos an Energie gewinnt. Ein feines Musikstück, gehört für mich aber nicht zu den stärksten auf dem Album.

Nachdem mich „Rebirth“ etwas geerdet hat, nimmt mich „Darkness“ wieder voll mit und offenbart großartiges Songwriting mit seiner progressiven Herangehensweise. Es ist wieder ein Song, der ganz verschiedene Emotionen in einen einzigen Song verpackt. Ich persönlich finde das äußerst spannend. Äußerst spannend finde ich auch das variable Riffing bzw. das Gitarrenspiel allgemein auf dem Album, welches die Gestaltung der unterschiedlichen Stimmungen hinsichtlich der lyrischen Inhalte der Songs unheimlich stark und passend prägt.

So hört man beim Song „Hate“ richtig dunkle schwere Riffs, dass dem Ganzen eine mächtige düstere Atmosphäre verpasst. Mir gefallen hier auch vor allem die Vocals von Henning. Der kann nicht nur „schön“ singen, sondern auch herrlich düster und auch mit fiesen Tönen, die hier beispielsweise ab Minute 03:28 geschmettert werden. Einfach super! So verkörpert man dem Songtitel „Hate“ sehr eindrucksvoll, was auch für die Songs „The Witches Are Burning“ und „Another Devil“ gilt. Hier sind die Songtitel Programm, denn es sind düstere harte Brecher, die euch heimsuchen.

Eine Huldigung mit eigener Handschrift

Und das ist eben die Kunst. Man kann sich an Vorbildern orientieren und ihnen huldigen, aber nicht jedem gelingt es dabei seine eigene Handschrift zu bewahren. Das ist LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT wieder einmal grandios gelungen. Mal mehr und mal weniger kommen die SAVATAGE-Vibes durch. Sehr präsent sind diese vor allem dann, wenn das Piano erklingt und die gefühlsintensive Theatralik Einzug erhält. In diesem Zusammenhang muss man die gefühlvolle Pianoballade „Let The River Flow“, die monstermäßige Powerballade „Leave Me Alone“ nennen, welche in einem schönen Glanze erblüht und mit gefühlvollen traumhaften Arrangements aufwarten kann.

Aber auch wenn LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT härtemäßig aufdrehen und den Metal-Pegel nach oben treiben, sind diese Vibes irgendwie präsent. „I Don’t See The Light“ ist ein sehr schwerfälliger finsterer Song, der erneut mit einer fesselnden Atmosphäre punkten kann, zumal der Song wieder einmal mit einem unvermuteten zarten emotionalen Einschub ab Minute 03:22 für den besonderen Moment sorgt. Ich empfinde diese Mischung als sehr aufregend und das Konzept spricht mich voll an. Sänger Henning Basse ist dafür perfekt geeignet, denn seine fabelhafte Stimme eignet sich sowohl für den rauen harten Sound, als auch für die gefühlvollen Verwöhnmomente.

Und diese Kontrastmomente werden auf diesem Album in Perfektion verwoben, so dass man stetig ins Staunen gerät. Einige von diesen Songs habe ich schon beschrieben. Zu den absoluten Highlights gehört zweifelsohne auch „One Moment“. Was für ein Wechselbad der Eindrücke und Gefühle! Die Eindrücke sind so intensiv und vielfältig, dass man quasi immer wieder den Wunsch verspürt die Songs gleich noch einmal zu hören. Ich würde meinen, dass viele Songs noch um einiges progressiver aufgebaut sind als beim Debütalbum. Natürlich darf die Cover-Version eines SAVATAGE-Klassikers nicht fehlen und so erklingt als Finale der Song „Tonight He Grins Again“, der erwartungsgemäß einwandfrei dargeboten wird und dem Album einen großartigen Abschluss beschert.

Eine Anmerkung nebenbei…

Man muss sich davon lösen, LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT mit SAVATAGE zu vergleichen und auf eine Stufe zu stellen. SAVATAGE sind Kult und sie haben ihre eigene einzigartige aufregende Geschichte gelebt. LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT sind nicht SAVATAGE und wollen es auch gar nicht sein, obgleich sie diese Band als Inspiration gewählt haben. Es ist eine Ehrerbietung mit einer eigenen künstlerischen Handschrift. Und wenn man sich die Songs von LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT anhört, dann sind das ganz famose Kompositionen, die sowohl vom Songwriting und von der technischen Präsentation absolut erstklassig sind. Daher komme ich zu folgendem Ergebnis.

Fazit

LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT zeigen auf „Darkness“ weitere exquisite musikalische Darbietungen. Es wird noch härter und düsterer! Die Songs legen eine unbändige Power an den Tag. Doch natürlich dürfen die gefühlvollen Momente nicht fehlen. Damit ergibt sich im Gesamtbild ein sehr reichhaltiges Konzept, wobei die Songs zum großen Teil progressiver aufgebaut sind und eine Vielzahl von Eindrücken vermitteln. Die Geschichten des Albums sind in ihrer Ausgestaltung unheimlich fesselnd, so dass man das Album gerne immer wieder aufs neue rotieren lässt, um voller Begeisterung auf der imposanten Reise neue Dinge zu entdecken.

LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT (Facebook) is another project by musician Jens Faber, who has been successful in the music business for a long time with DAWN OF DESTINY. LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT pays homage to the legendary band SAVATAGE. „Sorrow Is The Cure“ and „Hell“ have been released so far. In my review of „Hell“ I noted, among other things:

I am very happy that this approach has continued to be incorporated into the songwriting. After such impressive albums so far, expectations are correspondingly high. I like Jens Faber’s style and approach. You can always hear his signature style, but he also likes to explore boundaries and is therefore open to new musical perspectives. Jens Faber and his band LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT have definitely succeeded in living up to expectations and even exceeding them. There are indeed a lot of brilliant songs on this album. The new album „Darkness“ goes one better and deeper. And I would like to say that LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT have further perfected their musical mission.

A hell of a sound

is ignited right from the start with the opening track „No Control“. I didn’t get any further with listening to the album at first, as I had to listen to the opener a few times first because it got me so excited. What a mighty hammer! A song that immediately and mercilessly hits you and leaves you open-mouthed. At least that’s how it was for me. A masterpiece that has so much to offer. Even the opening is super successful and conveys a dark, majestic aura. Then it really gets going. The riffs are heavy and devastating. A degree of heaviness that I really hadn’t anticipated. Then the song goes into full throttle mode. I’m thrilled by the cool, flowing tempo changes and suddenly a wonderfully powerful chorus is heard. But the dark heaviness gains the upper hand again and sweeps over me. A strong solo puts the crown on the whole thing.

What can I say? The first song already delivers so many great impressions that I’m completely blown away. After listening to the song five times, I actually managed to continue on the journey. So the opener more than fulfilled its task of igniting enthusiasm for the album right from the start. But I have to admit that I couldn’t imagine how the level could be maintained.

The second song, „Rebirth“, takes a more leisurely approach to the journey. Awesome riffs, narrative parts and a majestic chorus characterize this song, which briefly gains energy during the guitar solo. A fine piece of music, but for me it’s not one of the strongest on the album.

After „Rebirth“ grounded me a little, „Darkness“ takes me all the way again and reveals great songwriting with its progressive approach. It’s another song that packs very different emotions into a single song. Personally, I find that extremely fascinating. I also find the variable riffing and the guitar playing in general on the album extremely exciting, which characterizes the design of the different moods with regard to the lyrical content of the songs incredibly strongly and appropriately.

In the song „Hate“ you can hear really dark, heavy riffs that give the whole thing a powerful, dark atmosphere. I particularly like Henning’s vocals here. He can not only sing „beautifully“, but also wonderfully darkly and with nasty tones, which are belted out here from minute 03:28 for example. Simply superb! The song title „Hate“ is embodied very impressively, which also applies to the songs „The Witches Are Burning“ and „Another Devil“, because they are dark, hard crushers that haunt you.

A homage with its own signature

And that is art. You can take inspiration from role models and pay homage to them, but not everyone succeeds in preserving their own signature style. Once again, LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT have succeeded in doing just that. Sometimes more and sometimes less, the SAVATAGE vibes come through. These are particularly present when the piano plays and the emotional theatricality enters. In this context, the soulful piano ballad „Let The River Flow“ and the monster-like power ballad „Leave Me Alone“ must be mentioned, which blossoms in a beautiful glow and boasts soulful, dreamlike arrangements.

But even when LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT turn up the heat and drive up the metal level, these vibes are somehow present. „I Don’t See The Light“ is a very ponderous, dark song that once again scores with a captivating atmosphere, especially as the song once again provides a special moment with an unexpectedly tender emotional interlude from minute 03:22 onwards. I find this mixture very exciting and the concept really appeals to me. Singer Henning Basse is perfect for this, because his fabulous voice is suitable for both the rough hard sound and the soulful moments of indulgence.

And these contrasting moments are interwoven to perfection on this album, so that you are constantly amazed. I have already described some of these songs. One of the absolute highlights is undoubtedly „One Moment“. What a rollercoaster of impressions and feelings! The impressions are so intense and varied that you feel the desire to listen to the songs again and again. I would say that many of the songs are even more progressive than on the debut album. Of course, the cover version of a SAVATAGE classic should not be missing and so the finale is the song „Tonight He Grins Again“, which, as expected, is performed flawlessly and brings the album to a great close.

A side note

You have to get away from comparing LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT with SAVATAGE and putting them on the same level. SAVATAGE are cult and they have lived their own unique and exciting history. LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT is not SAVATAGE and doesn’t want to be, even though that band was chosen as inspiration. It is a tribute with its own artistic signature. And if you listen to the songs of LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT, then you can objectively state that they are absolutely first-class compositions, both in terms of songwriting and technical presentation. Therefore I come to the following conclusion.

Conclusion

LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT present further exquisite musical performances on „Darkness“. It gets even heavier and darker! The songs display unbridled power. But of course the emotional moments should not be missing. This results in a very rich overall concept, whereby the songs are largely more progressive in structure and convey a variety of impressions. The stories on the album are incredibly captivating in their design, so that the album can be rotated again and again to discover new things on the impressive journey full of excitement.

Denn dieses Jahr waren in dieser Kategorie viele tolle Alben vertreten. Es gab leider nicht zu allen starken Alben Rezensionen bei uns. Hier seien z.B. EVERGREY mit „A Heartless Portrait“ und BOREALIS mit „Illusions“ genannt, die sicherlich auch zu den besten Veröffentlichungen in diesem Bereich zählen.

In der illustren Auswahl der Besten findet sich auf jeden Fall auch das Album

„Survive“ von STRATOVARIUS.

Meine Kollege Uwe hatte das Album rezensiert und bescheinigt STRATOVARIUS (Facebook) eine hohe Qualität. Ich zitiere aus dem Review: „Tatsächlich zeigt bereits der Opener „Survive“, dass Stratovarius nichts verlernt haben. Wie mann es von ihnen gewohnt ist, geht es schnell, kraftvoll und melodiös zur Sache.“ (Review)

Und dem kann ich mich nur anschließen. Technisch kann man den Männern ohnehin nichts vormachen. Die Songs sind perfekt inszeniert und der Gesang von Timo Kotipelto ist wie gewohnt makellos. Wer sehr viel Wert auf schmeichelnde Melodien legt, ist hier goldrichtig und wird mit dem Album sehr sehr glücklich sein.

BLIND GUARDIAN

haben sich ebenfalls nach langer Abstinenz mit ihrem Album „The God Machine“ verdammt eindrucksvoll zuückgemeldet. Auch dieses Album wurde von meinem Kollegen Uwe ebenfalls als erstklassiges Werk eingestuft. Ich zitiere: „Hansi Kürsch, Markus Siepen und Co. knüpfen härtetechnisch an ihre Frühwerke an und lassen es richtig krachen. Natürlich haben sie sich technisch weiter entwickelt, so dass hier schon ein ordentlicher Unterschied zu ihren alten Alben erkennbar ist.“ (Review)

Und ich stimme Uwe völlig zu. Ich bin froh, dass BLIND GUARDIAN die Härte und Geradlinigkeit aus alten Zeiten wiedergefunden haben und diese gekonnt mit ihrer progressiven Herangehensweise der letzten Alben verwoben haben. So ist „The God Machine“ eine machtvolle Demonstration ihrer musikalischen Künste. Hervorragend!

LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT

sind eine erstklassige Power Metal Band, die Jens Faber ins Leben gerufen hat. Sie machen keinen Hehl daraus, dass SAVATAGE als Inspiration für ihre Musik dienen. Zum Glück nutzen sie diese Inspiration nicht dazu eine bloße Kopie zu werden. Sie machen ihr eigenes Ding und das machen sie hervorragend. Die inspirierenden Momente, die an Savatage erinnern, sind zweifelsohne vorhanden, doch sie sind Nuancen in einem Sound, der sich seine Eigenständigkeit bewahrt.

LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT (Facebook) vereinen im Album „Hell“ ein eigene musikalische Konzeption mit einer Hommage an die Band Savatage, was insgesamt zu einer kunstvollen höchst unterhaltsamen Darbietung wird. Das Konzept ist sehr stimming und ausgewogen. Einerseits stürmt kraftvolle Leidenschaft erhaben in glänzender stählerner Rüstung mit dem Schwert voran und andererseits werden schmeichelnde Emotionen in ein instrumentales anschmiegsames Gewand gekleidet. Alles ist mit hochwertigen Ingredienzien miteinander geschmiedet und verwoben worden, so dass das Album mit guten bis genialen Songs aufwarten kann. Am Ende des Album schenkt uns die Band noch eine grandiose Coverversion des SAVATAGE Klassikers „When The Crowds Are Gone“. (Review)

HEXED

aus Schweden gehen das Thema bombastisch an. Das Album „Pagans Rising“ ist eine epische cineastische Reise. Die Songs drehen sich um das Thema der Hexenverfolgung in Schweden (siehe dazu Interview und Hintergrundbericht). Alleine das Cover-Artwork ist eine Augenweide. Und dies setzt sich musikalisch auf dem Album fort.

Sängerin Tina hat eine der vielseitigsten und besten Stimmen in diesem Metal-Genre. Sie hat eine Kraft in ihrer Stimme, die Euch wie ein stürmischer Orkan anbrüllt. Trotz ihrer wahnsinnigen Energie kann sie Euch auch mit viel Gefühl verzaubern. So entsteht eie HEXED (Facebook) eine gesangliche Leistung, die zu begeistern weiß. An Ihrer Seite sind ebenfalls großartige Musiker (unter anderem ihr Ehemann), die Euch mit wundervollen Songs unterhalten.

HEXED haben mit „Pagans Rising“ einen akustischen Blockbuster erschaffen. Das Album vollzieht eine epische Reise mit kraftvollen opulenten Songs, die mit imposanter Magie eindringliche Geschichten erzählen. Es wird trotz Bombast viel Wert auf ein ausgeglichenes Hörerlebnis gelegt und man hat es sich zur Mission gemacht, die Songs mit viel spürbarer Dynamik zu versehen, die sich aus wunderschönen Melodienbögen und energischer Härte zusammensetzt. Sehr beeindruckend! (Review)

DAWN OF DESTINY

Na so was… Schon wieder Jens Faber. Er hat meinen allergrößten Respekt, indem er zwei sehr gute Alben in einem Jahr mit zwei unterschiedlichen Bands veröffentlicht hat. Denn auch DAWN OF DESTINY (Facebook) ist eine Band des Musikers, die es schon seit 2005 gibt und seitdem viele hochwertige Alben produziert hat. Das diesjährige Werk „Of Silence“ gehört jedenfalls eindeutig dazu. Das Album ist mit 13 Songs randvoll gepackt und glänzt mit einer Spielzeit von über einer Stunde. Der Härtegrad im melodischen Konzept gefällt mir außerordentlich gut. Da ist von allem etwas dabei.

DAWN OF DESTINY gelingt mit ihrem neuen Album „Of Silence“ ein Geniestreich. Selten hört man ein Album, welches über eine solch lange Spielzeit die Spannung aufrecht erhalten und für Überraschungen sorgen kann. Hier gelingt es mit eindrucksvollen abwechslungreichen Kompositionen ein homogenes Gesamtbild zu gestalten. (Review)

Doch kommen wir nun zu der Band, welche für mich das Power-Metal-Album des Jahres erschaffen hat.

SEVENTH STORM

Kein geringerer als Mike Gaspar, der zuvor bei MOONSPELL als Drummer lange Zeit die Felle geprügelt hat, hat diese Band ins Leben gerufen und mit „Maledictus“ dieses Jahr ihr Debütalbum veröffentlicht. Und dieses Album ist auf Anhieb eine wahre Offenbarung geworden, die mit Kraft und Emotionen eine epische dichte Atmosphäre erzeugt. Alles ist mit viel Liebe zum Detail ausgearbeitet worden und alle Beteiligten zeigen eine perfekte Performance, die sogar stellenweise ins Progressive geht.

Sänger Rez weiß seine kraftvolle voluminöse Stimme perfekt einzusetzen. Man spürt, dass er voller Inbrunst aus tiefstem Herzen seine Töne zelebriert. Dabei ist egal, ob er im kraftvollen Modus agiert oder die gefühlvolle Seite offenbart. SEVENTH STORM hinterlässt einen bleibenden grandiosen Eindruck. Mit dieser Band würde ich durch jeden Sturm segeln. (Review)

I quote: „Hansi Kürsch, Markus Siepen and Co. are recognizing their early works in terms of hardness and really let it rip. Of course, they have technically developed further, so that here is already a decent difference to their old albums recognizable.„(Review)

And I totally agree with Uwe. I am glad that BLIND GUARDIAN (Facebook) have rediscovered the hardness and straightforwardness from old times and have skillfully interwoven it with their progressive approach of the last albums. So „The God Machine“ is a powerful demonstration of their musical arts. Outstanding!

LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT

are a top-notch Power Metal band brought to life by Jens Faber. LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT make no secret of the fact that SAVATAGE serve as inspiration for their music. Fortunately, they don’t use this inspiration to become a mere copy. They do their own thing and they do it brilliantly. The inspirational moments reminiscent of Savatage are undoubtedly there, but they are nuances in a sound that retains its independence.

LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT (Facebook) combine in the album „Hell“ their own musical concept with a tribute to the band Savatage, which altogether becomes an artistic highly entertaining performance. The concept is very harmonious and balanced. On the one hand, powerful passion storms forward sublimely in shining steel armor with the sword and on the other hand, flattering emotions are dressed in an instrumental cuddly garment. Everything has been forged and woven together with high-quality ingredients, so that the album can come up with good to brilliant songs. At the end of the album the band gives us a great cover version of the SAVATAGE classic „When The Crowds Are Gone“. (Review)

HEXED

from Sweden take a bombastic approach to the subject. The album „Pagans Rising“ is an epic cinematic journey. All songs revolve around the topic of witch hunts in Sweden (Interview, background of the album). The cover artwork is a feast for the eyes. And this continues musically on the album.

Singer Tina has one of the most versatile and best voices in this metal genre. She has a power in her voice that roars at you like a stormy hurricane. Despite her insane energy, she can also enchant you with a lot of feeling. This is how HEXED (Facebook) creates a vocal performance that knows how to inspire. She has a great support by the other musicians (including her husband), who entertain you with wonderful songs.

HEXED have created an acoustic blockbuster with „Pagans Rising“. The album completes an epic journey with powerful opulent songs that tell haunting stories with imposing magic. There is a lot of emphasis on a balanced listening experience despite the bombast and has made it a mission to provide the songs with a lot of palpable dynamics, composed of beautiful melodic arcs and energetic harshness. Very impressive! (Review)

DAWN OF DESTINY

And already Jens Faber appears again. He has my utmost respect by releasing two very good albums in one year with two different bands. Because DAWN OF DESTINY (Facebook) is also a band of this musician, which already exists since 2005 and has produced many high-quality albums since then. In any case, this year’s album „Of Silence“ clearly belongs to them. The album is packed to the brim with 13 songs and shines with a playing time of over an hour. The degree of hardness in the melodic concept pleases me extraordinarily well. There is something of everything.

DAWN OF DESTINY succeeds with their new album „Of Silence“ a stroke of genius. Rarely you hear an album that can maintain the tension over such a long playing time and provide surprises. Here it succeeds with impressive varied compositions, which in themselves give a homogeneous overall picture. (Review)

But now let’s get to the band that created the Power Metal album of the year for me.

SEVENTH STORM

Mike Gaspar, being the drummer of MOONSPELL for a long time, has created SEVENTH STORM and released their debut album this year with „Maledictus“. And this album has become a true revelation right away, creating an epic dense atmosphere with power and emotion. Everything has been worked out with great attention to detail and all involved show a perfect performance that even goes progressive in places.

Singer Rez knows how to use his powerful voluminous voice perfectly. You can feel that he celebrates his vocals from the bottom of his heart. It does not matter whether he acts in the powerful mode or reveals the soulful side. SEVENTH STORM leaves a lasting grandiose impression. I would sail through any storm with this band. (Review)

Ich bin ein großer Savatage Fan und werde natürlich hellhörig, wenn eine Band offiziell Savatage als Inspiration für ihren Sound angibt. LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT (Facebook) ist so eine Band! Und als Schirmherr zeichnet sich Jens Faber verantwortlich, der übrigens auch Gründer der Band DAWN OF DESTINY ist. Und die haben in diesem Jahr bereits ihr super Album „Of Silence“ veröffentlicht. Also scheint es Jens nicht an kreativen Ideen zu mangeln, denn heute am 04.11.’22 schickt er das neue Album „Hell“ von LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT ins Rennen.

Inspiration

ist eine tolle Sache und noch bemerkenswerter ist es, wenn Inspiration nicht zu einer bloßen Kopie wird. Dahingehend kann ich schon mal Entwarnung geben. Die inspirierenden Momente, die an Savatage erinnern, sind zweifelsohne vorhanden, doch sie sind Nuancen in einem Sound, der sich seine Eigenständigkeit bewahrt. LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT bewegt sich Gewässern des Melodic Metal und in den Stromschnellen wird es auch zum kraftvollen epischen Power Metal.

Hymnen

Die ersten Töne des Pianos beim Opener „Who Will Believe In Me“ stellen den Bezug zu Savatage natürlich umgehend her, aber dann entwickelt sich der Song zu einer gewaltigen Hymne, die mich unweigerlich von ihrer opulenten Erscheinung her an DAWN OF DESTINY erinnert. Man erkennt auf jeden Fall die Handschrift von Jens in den Songs, die durchweg auf dem Album zur Geltung kommt. Und das meine ich im positiven Sinne. Ebenfalls sehr positiv sticht bei der ganzen Geschichte

Sänger Henning Basse

(Metalium, ex- Firewind, Mayan) heraus, der hier eine sehr eindrucksvolle Leistung abliefert. Henning kann tonnenweise Gefühl in seine Stimme legen, aber genauso viel Kraft offenbaren. Mit dieser bemerkenswerten Kombination erklingen wahrlich geniale Erlebnisse. Ein imponierendes Beispiel dafür ist der Song „Run Faster“, den Ihr gleich hier genießen dürft. Hier vereinen sich gewaltige Power und epische Hooklines zu einem wahren Genuß. Fantastisch! Ganz groß sind auch die würzigen Momente, in denen Henning stimmlich eskaliert und markerschütternde Screams raushaut.

Imposant

Die Songs erstrahlen in einer Opulenz, die häufig eine theatralische Epik generiert. Man nehme z.B. den Titelsong „Hell“ mit einer Spielzeit von fast sieben Minuten, der sich langsam aber sicher wie einer Welle im Meer auftürmt, um dann mit voller Wucht einzuschlagen. Dies ist ein Konzept, welches gut funktioniert. Auch „And The World Has Lost This Fight“ erfährt im Verlauf Steigerungen und vollzieht Wendungen, die verschiedene Stimmungen produzieren und sogar zu einer wilden Attacke führen.

Apropos Angriffe.. LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT sorgen ebenfalls für schnelle imposante Offensiven. „Fury“ ist ein Beispiel für einen prügelnde Ansturm, der im furiosen Tempo alles erbarmungslos niedergaloppiert. So etwas aggressives und geradliniges hätte ich tatsächlich nicht unbedingt erwartet. Hier sei auch mal erwähnt, dass die Gitarren schön fett den Hammer kreisen lassen und auch die Soli sind aller Ehren wert. Lediglich der Bass hätte für mich generell noch mehr zum Vorschein kommen können. Insgesamt kristallisiert sich eine stimmige dichte Atmossphäre heraus, die von vorne bis hinten erhalten bleibt. Da macht der düstere Song „Our Bleeding“ keine Ausnahme und zeigt mal eine andere gesangliche Facette. Mir haben die Passagen mit der gedoppelten Stimme sehr gut gefallen. Mal was anderes.

Balladen

dürfen natürlich nicht fehlen und auch in den ruhigen emotionalen Gefilden glänzen LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT. Das zarte zerbrechliche „Times Of Despair“ mit seinen wundervollen Gesangslinien weiß sehr wohl zu verzaubern und bei dem pompösen „The Memory Remains“ kommen sogar Erinnerungen an Savatage hoch, denn Sänger Henning versprüht mitunter die Vibes von Jon Oliva.

Aber beim Cover vom Übersong „When The Crowds Are Gone“ von SAVATAGE treibt er es bis zur Vollendung. Ich war sehr gespannt auf die Umsetzung, als ich diesen Song als letzten Track erspähte. So etwas kann ja auch grandios in die Hose gehen. Und was soll ich sagen…. Es ist glücklicherweise einfach phänomenal geworden. Ja, ich gebe zu, dass ich Gänsehaut und fast Pippi in den Augen bekommen habe, als der Song sich mit den ersten Tönen in meine Ohren schmeichelte und sich dann zu einem wirklich phantastisch Erlebnis entwickelte. Dabei ist man glücklicherweise nah am Original geblieben und hat dem Song lediglich den Sound der Neuzeit geschenkt. So bekommt dieser legendäre Song ein wundervolle Würdigung auf einer gewaltigen musikalischen Bühne, die diesem Song mehr als gerecht wird.

Fazit

LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT vereinen im Album „Hell“ ein eigene musikalische Konzeption mit einer Hommage an die Band Savatage, was insgesamt zu einer kunstvollen höchst unterhaltsamen Darbietung wird. Das Konzept ist sehr stimming und ausgewogen. Einerseits stürmt kraftvolle Leidenschaft erhaben in glänzender stählerner Rüstung mit dem Schwert voran und andererseits werden schmeichelnde Emotionen in ein instrumentales anschmiegsames Gewand gekleidet. Alles ist mit hochwertigen Ingredienzien miteinander geschmiedet und verwoben worden, so dass das Album mit guten bis genialen Songs aufwarten kann.

Epic Power Metal

I’m a big Savatage fan and of course I’m going to be very curious when a band officially cites Savatage as the inspiration for their sound. LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT (Facebook) is such a band! And the patron is Jens Faber, who by the way is also the founder of the band DAWN OF DESTINY. And they have already released their super album „Of Silence“ this year. So Jens doesn’t seem to lack creative ideas, because today on 04.11.’22 he set the new album „Hell“ of LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT on fire.

Inspiration

is a great thing, and it’s even more remarkable when inspiration doesn’t become a mere copy. In this respect I can already give the all-clear. The inspirational moments reminiscent of SAVATAGE are undoubtedly present, but they are nuances in a sound that retains its own style. LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT moves waters of melodic metal and in the rapids it also becomes powerful epic power metal.

Hymns

The first notes of the piano in the opener „Who Will Believe In Me“ establish the reference to SAVATAGE immediately, of course, but then the song develops into a massive anthem that inevitably reminds me of DAWN OF DESTINY from its opulent appearance. You can definitely recognize Jens‘ signature in the songs, which is evident throughout the album. And I mean that in a positive sense. Also very positive

singer Henning Basse

(Metalium, ex- Firewind, Mayan) stands out in the whole story, who delivers a very impressive performance here. Henning can put tons of feeling into his voice, but reveal just as much power. With this remarkable combination, truly brilliant experiences resound. An impressive example of this is the song „Run Faster“, which you can enjoy right here. Here enormous power and epic hooklines unite to a true pleasure. Fantastic! Also great are the spicy moments, in which Henning escalates vocally and shoots out shattering screams.

Impressive

The songs shine in an opulence that often generates a theatrical epicness. Take, for example, the title track „Hell“ with a playing time of almost seven minutes, which slowly but surely piles up like a wave in the sea, only to hit with full force. This is a concept that works well. Also „And The World Has Lost This Fight“ experiences increases in the course and performs turns that produce different moods and even lead to a wild attack.

Speaking of attacks… LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT also provide fast imposing offensives. „Fury“ is an example of a thrashing onslaught that mercilessly gallops down everything at furious speed. I wouldn’t necessarily have expected something so aggressive and straightforward. Here it should also be mentioned that the guitars sounds grippy and fat. Also the solos are worthy. Only the bass could have generally come out more for me. Overall, a coherent dense atmosphere crystallizes, which is maintained from front to back. The dark song „Our Bleeding“ is no exception and shows a different vocal facet. I liked the passages with the doubled voice very much. Something different for a change.

Ballads

of course may not be missing and also in the quiet emotional realms LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT succeds. The delicate fragile „Times Of Despair“ with its wonderful vocal lines knows very well to enchant and with the pompous „The Memory Remains“ even memories of SAVATAGE come up, because singer Henning sometimes exudes the vibes of Jon Oliva.

But with the cover of the cult song „When The Crowds Are Gone“ by Savatage he pushes it to perfection. I was very curious about the realization when I spied this song as the last track. And what can I say…. Thankfully, it turned out just phenomenal. Yes, I admit that I got goose bumps and almost pee in my eyes when the song flattered itself into my ears with the first notes and then developed into a really fantastic experience. Fortunately, they stayed close to the original and only gave the song the sound of modern times. So this legendary song gets a wonderful tribute on a huge musical stage, which is more than fair to this song.

Conclusion

LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT combine in the album „Hell“ their own musical concept with a homage to the band SAVATAGE, which altogether becomes an artistic highly entertaining performance. The concept is very harmonious and balanced. On the one hand, powerful passion storms forward sublimely in shining steel armor with the sword high. And on the other hand, flattering emotions are dressed in an instrumental cuddly garment. Everything has been forged and interwoven with high-quality ingredients, so that the album can come up with good to brilliant songs.
