IVORY TOWER – „Heavy Rain“ Review

English review
Genre: Heavy/Power Metal

After five albums, IVORY TOWER (Facebook) from Germany are now at the start with „Heavy Rain“. And on it we can welcome the new singer Lord Francis Soto, who is making his debut with the band. We will now find out whether the noble name also stands for an excellent voice.
I had my first impression with the single „Heavy Ride“, which was only recently released. This driving, hard track had at least impressed me enough to make me curious. The song title „Heavy Ride“ can really be taken literally, because it goes straight forward and hard. And I really like the performance of singer Lord Francis. He shows that he has enough power to keep up with the furious instrumental effort.
And what I really loved was the idea of shooting the video for „Heavy Ride“ in a bus. Completely crazy and therefore totally my cup of tea.
Endless power
IVORY TOWER take you away with full power from the very first song. „Black Rain“ takes no prisoners and gets off to a flying start. It makes you feel right at home and you’re happy to be carried away by the energetic, rich sound. The impressive chorus also does everything right. It’s totally cool when the song briefly switches to a tight marching tempo, only to then fire off a brilliant guitar solo that culminates in an ecstatic shredding attack.
The sound is not only very powerful and full of energy in the opener, but runs through the entire album, which has a generous playing time of almost an hour. Even a power ballad like „Never“ makes an extremely vigorous appearance, but offers a welcome change after the first two breakers with somewhat restrained soulful passages (especially in the first two minutes). Speaking of variety…
High quality
„The Destination“ with its almost seven minutes is a real highlight and convinces across the board with its exciting songwriting. The synths also come into their own here as an atmospheric design element. However, the guitar riffs and drums continue to bang vehemently. And just when you think it’s over after 04:25, the song shows its progressive touch. The song transitions into a relaxed melodic section where the keyboard and guitar take over the main roles. You can enjoy a nice carefree guitar solo in combination with some accentuated synths. Bass and drums provide the dynamics. Then everything is given its all once again and a passionate finale is introduced. Fantastic!
I would have liked more progressive surprises like this on the album. Unfortunately, it remains the exception on the album in this form. The other songs follow a more straightforward path. They all sound very good and are a lot of fun, but in my opinion more progressiveness and unpredictability would have done the album good and given it the finishing touch.
In addition to the already impeccable craftsmanship, I particularly liked the guitar solos. They don’t always sound the same, but are finely tuned to the song and harmonize wonderfully with the songs. One example is the majestic instrumental part in the song „Monster“. The way in which the synths are integrated also repeatedly provides accents and the right mood.
Conclusion
IVORY TOWER deliver a mighty strong album with „Heavy Rain“. It comes up with a phalanx of high quality songs that are very furious and attack the listener with powerful assaults.
