Man muss WALG (Facebook) alleine schon deswegen Anerkennung zollen, weil sie seit ihrem Debüt „I“ im Jahr 2021 tatsächlich jedes Jahr mit einem neuen Album antreten. Und man sollten nicht meinen, dass darunter die Qualität der Musik leidet. Ich bin auf die Band aufmerksam geworden, als sie ihr zweites Album veröffentlicht hatten. Das hat mich dermaßen umgehauen, so dass ich direkt 10 Punkte vergeben hatte (Review „II“). Doch damit war es nicht genug. Jedes ihrer nachfolgenden Alben konnte bei mir volle 10 Punkte einfahren (Review „III“, Review „IV“). Somit ist es natürlich eine Selbstverständlichkeit, dass ich mich auch dem neuen Album „V“ widme.

WALG bleiben sich auch weiterhin auf dem neuen Album treu und man erkennt sofort den typischen WALG-Sound. Es ist die unverkennbare Vehemenz, mit der WALG ohne Rücksicht auf Verluste in die Vollen gehen. Der Sound trommelt wie ein Donnerwetter auf den Hörer hernieder, dass es nur so kracht. Ich mochte schon immer die ungezügelte Energie, der WALG freien Lauf lassen ohne es zu einer eintönigen langweiligen Erfahrung werden zu lassen. WALG treten dabei in ihrer Schaffensphase aber nie auf der Stelle. Es gelang ihnen bisher immer wieder neue Feinheiten in den Sound einfließen zu lassen. Jedenfalls werde ich nach den ersten Tönen sofort wieder in die WALG-Welt geworfen und dort fühle ich mich pudelwohl.

Man bedient sich weiterhin stellenweise an symphonischen Keys, was hier zum ersten Mal deutlich beim zweiten Song „De Adem Van Het Einde“ zum Ausdruck kommt. Dieser Song ist ein absoluter Burner. Ich bin auch von dem Gitarrenspiel sehr beeindruckt, das sich von Album zu Album weiterentwickelt hat und wahrlich tolle Melodien hervorzaubert. Dies könnt ihr auch im furiosen Songfinale bewundern. Ein echter epischer Knaller.

Auf dem neuen Album wird der Hörer wieder einmal absolut hochwertigen Black Metal genießen dürfen. Subjektiv habe ich das Gefühl, dass die Produktion noch besser geworden ist. Mir scheint, dass der Sound nun noch klarer und die einzelnen Komponenten differenzierter wahrzunehmen sind.

Bisher hatten WALG immer eine folkloristische Attitüde in vielen ihrer Songs, durch die den Songs ein gewisser mystischer Geist innewohnte. Dieser ist immer noch vorhanden, wenngleich ich das Gefühl habe, dass dieser düstere mystische Geist nicht ganz so präsent ist wie es bisher der Fall war. Beim Song „Pijnlichaam“ fühle ich mich aber wieder an dieser Atmosphäre erinnert, da er nicht nur diesen folkloristischen Touch besitzt, sondern eben auch die geheimnisvolle Aura ausstrahlt, weil er nicht nur die ganze Zeit brettert, sondern progressiver aufgebaut ist. Das sind epische Songs, die ich liebe. Ein weiteres Highlight für mich!

Fazit

WALG sind einfach nicht zu stoppen. „V“ ist wieder ein Album vollgepackt mit hochwertigen Black Metal Songs, welche neben ihrer brachialen und energischen Durchschlagskraft so melodisch und filigran wie nie zuvor klingen. Rein technisch gehen WALG mit ihrem durchdachten detailverliebten Songwriting also noch mal eine Stufe weiter. Allerdings muss ich diesmal für mich persönlich einen kleinen Abstrich bei der atmosphärischen Gestaltung machen. Nichtsdestotrotz ist das fünfte Album von WALG wieder eine Black-Metal-Offenbarung, die man sich auf keinen Fall entgehen lassen sollte.

Somit ist es natürlich eine Selbstverständlichkeit, dass ich mich auch dem neuen Album „V“ widme.

You have to give WALG(Facebook) credit for the fact that they have actually released a new album every year since their debut „I“ in 2021. And you shouldn’t think that the quality of the music suffers as a result. I became aware of the band when they released their second album. It inspired me so much that I gave it 10 points straight away (Review „II“). But that wasn’t enough. Each of their subsequent albums scored a full 10 points (Review „III“, Review „IV“). So of course I’m also devoting myself to the new album „V“.

WALG remain true to themselves on the new album and the typical WALG sound is immediately recognizable. It is the unmistakable vehemence with which WALG go all out regardless of losses. The sound comes crashing down on the listener like a thunderstorm. I’ve always liked the unbridled energy that WALG give free rein to without turning it into a monotonous, boring experience.

But WALG never stand still in their creation. They have always managed to incorporate new subtleties into their sound. In any case, after the first few notes I am immediately thrown back into the WALG world and I feel right at home here.

On the new album, the listener will once again be able to enjoy absolutely high-quality black metal. Subjectively, I have the feeling that the production has become even better. It seems to me that the sound is now even clearer and the individual components can be perceived in a more differentiated way.

They continue to make use of symphonic keys in places, which is clearly expressed for the first time in the second song „De Adem Van Het Einde“. This song is an absolute burner. I am also very impressed by the guitar playing, which has developed from album to album and conjures up truly great melodies. You can also admire this in the furious song finale. A real epic banger.

So far, WALG have always had a folk attitude in many of their songs, which gave them a certain mystical spirit. This is still present, although I have the feeling that this dark mystical spirit is not quite as present as it used to be.

But the song „Pijnlichaam“ reminds me of this atmosphere again, because it not only has this folkloristic touch, but also radiates a mysterious aura, because it doesn’t just bang all the time, but has a more progressive structure. These are epic songs that I love. Another highlight for me!

Conclusion

WALG are simply unstoppable. „V“ is another album packed with high-quality black metal songs which, in addition to their brute and energetic power, sound more melodic and filigree than ever before. Technically, WALG go one step further with their well thought-out and detailed songwriting. However, this time I personally have to make a small deduction when it comes to the atmospheric design. Nonetheless, WALG’s fifth album is another black metal revelation that should definitely not be missed.

MUNAHRHEIM „Heimkehr“

Beginnen wir den Akt mit einer Band, die ihre Musik mit deutschen Texten darbieten. Das ist schon einmal eine Besonderheit. Die Musik von MUNARHEIM ist von mehreren Genres durchsetzt und Fans von old school Black Metal, der nur gnadenlos in die Vollen geht, werden sich hier wahrscheinlich nicht wohlfühlen. Aber mir gefällt der Sound sehr und deswegen habe ich das Album „Heimkehr“ hier mit eingefügt.

Sänger Pascal kreischt sich hier dunkel und fies durch die Songs. Dies macht er außerordentlich gut und ich verstehe fast jedes Wort. Es ist noch mal zusätzliches Plus, wenn man dem lyrischen Inhalt ohne große Probleme folgen kann. Das ist ja gerade in diesem Genre keine Selbstverständlichkeit. Was den Sound so ungewöhnlich macht, ist zum einen der Einsatz von wohlklingenden erhabenen Chören, die ich schlichtweg wunderbar finde. Ich bin ein Fan von so etwas. Davon wird direkt beim Opener „Sei Du Das Licht“ ausgiebig Gebrauch gemacht. Beim ersten Hören war ich echt geflasht! In den folgenden Songs werden diese Chöre phänomenal in die musikalischen Welten eingebunden und sorgen immer wieder für eine erhebende Momente.

Die andere Besonderheit in der hochmelodischen Darbietung ist die Einbindung von symphonischen Sound und Folkelementen, welche die Atmosphäre noch zusätzlich vertiefen. Der Sound hat genügend brachiale Phasen, die kompromisslos hart und bösartig klingen, aber es ist sicherlich für Black Metal Verhältnisse kein super hartes Album. Das stört mich aber keineswegs, denn die ausgefeilten Kompositionen haben mich gefangen genommen. Es ist wohl das einzige Album in dieser Liste, bei dem ich mich zum inbrünstigen Mitsingen eingeladen fühlte. Daher höre ich das Album besonders gerne, wenn die Familie aus dem Haus ist.

WELTENBRANDT – „Transzendenz Schatten Romantik“

WELTENBRANDT sind ebenfalls deutschsprachig unterwegs. Mit „Transzendenz Schatten Romantik“ ist ihnen eine spektakuläre Wiederkehr gelungen. Das Album bietet euch berauschende musikalische Landschaften. Es ist ein Mix aus brachialen Elementen und traumhaften Melodien. Es ist ein Tanz im Sturm der Emotionen!

Mehr tragische Epik ist dem Sound ebenfalls zuteil geworden. Dies wird mit der opulenten Einleitung des Openers „Melancholia Urgewalt“ deutlich zur Schau gestellt. Mit den orchestralen Elementen wie Streichern und Piano erklingen traumhafte Melodien, die sich im monumentalen Konstrukt einbetten und der tragischen Melancholie einen besonderen Zauber einhauchen. Dieser Song ist nicht so energiegeladen wie „Apotropaion“, sondern hat seine Stärken in seiner bedrückenden epischen Erscheinung.

WELTENBRANDT legen Wert auf ruhigere Zwischenspiele, die mit den extremen und wilden Passagen eine harmonische Verbindung eingehen. Sogar die zwei instrumentalen Zwischenspiele fügen sich wunderbar ein und fördern das Eintauchen in die musikalischen Gemälde von WELTENBRANDT. Prügelnde Blastbeatorgien sorgen selbstverständlich für stürmische Zeiten, aber der expressive Sound hat viel mehr an Substanz zu bieten und füllt die Zeit mit vielen Momenten, die auch abseits der Stürme beeindruckend sind. (full review)

SIDUS ATRUM – “Розірване Небо (Torn Sky)” 

Viele mögen Black Metal nicht als emotionale Musik bezeichnen. Dem möchte ich auf jeden Fall widersprechen, denn ich habe mittlerweile so viele Bands und Musiker gehört, die in dieser extremen Form der Musik unheimlich viel Emotionen vermitteln können. So auch bei der ukrainischen Band SIDUS ATRUM. Wut, Verzweiflung, Traurigkeit und viel Schmerz spüre ich bei ihren Songs. „Коли земля кричала (When The Earth Cried Out)“ möchte ich hier als Beispiel anführen, der mit krasser Vehemenz und viel melodischen Untermalungen zusammen mit dem Video ein sehr einschneidendes intensives visuelles und auditives Erlebnis liefert. Auch der monumentale Schlusstrack „Пульс Життя (Puls Of Life)“  ist ein hochemotionaler Song mit, der mich eindringlich berührt hat.

SIDUS ATRUM verkörpern mit dem Album „Torn Sky“ alle Grausamkeit und das Leid, die ein Krieg mit sich bringt. Diese Form der extremen musikalischen Darstellung ist das perfekte Mittel, um dieses entsetzliche Thema umzusetzen. Es ist ein Album mit eindrucksvollen und durchdringenden Songs, die den Hörer bewegen und unweigerlich erbarmungslos in die dunkle Hölle zieht, aus der das Album entstanden ist. Verschließt nicht eure Augen und Ohren und traut euch diese dunkle Erfahrung zu erleben. (full review)

WAIDELOTTE „Celestial Shrine“

Das Debütalbum der ukrainischen Band hat mein Kollege Matt rezensiert. Ich teile seine Meinung und zitiere daher Passagen aus seinem Review:

Dieses Album verspricht eine einzigartige Mischung aus Progressive, Black und Folk Metal-Elementen. Es zeigt das kreative Können seiner Mitglieder, die aus renommierten Bands wie WHITE WARD und SOEN stammen. Unter der Leitung des Hauptkomponisten und Bassisten Oleksii „Zlatoyar“ Kobel liefert WAIDELOTTE eine fesselnde Erzählung, die durch aggressive Riffs, treibende Rhythmen und eindringliche Vocals geprägt ist. Und das alles unterstreichen die reichen Texturen von ukrainischen Instrumenten wie dem Duduk und der Bandura.

Das Album liefert vielschichtige Musik mit hoher Komplexität. Definitv nichts zum Nebenbei-Hören. Denn mehr als ein Dutzend kreative, musikschaffende Köpfe gehören zur Band. Und die haben ihr ganzes Können in das Gesamtkunstwerk eingebracht. Da gibt es Strecken, die nur von mehrstimmigen, traditionellen Instrumenten oder epischen Chor-Passagen getragen werden. Und dann bricht plötzlich die Hölle los und druckvoller Extreme Metal prasselt auf die Ohren ein. Die meiste Zeit aber harmonieren diese beiden unvereinbar scheinenden Welten völlig stimmig und harmonisch miteinander. Absolut hörenswert! (full review)

WALG „IV“

Der Stil von WALG ist unverkennbar. Wenn man sie einmal gehört hat, dann wird man sie immer wieder sofort heraushören. Die Art und Weise der Kombination von Instrumentierung und Vocals sind prägnant, zumal die Vocals in der niederländischen Landessprache geschmettert werden. Ihre Interpretation des Black Metal ist hochmelodisch, unheimlich wild und aggressiv. Dabei bringen sie gerne auch mal Folkelemente mit ein, was ich persönlich sehr schätze. Die Kombination aus Folk und Black Metal finde ich sowieso sehr faszinierend.

ch habe mit Begeisterung wahrgenommen, dass WALG nun noch mehr Wert auf Ingredienzen gelegt haben, die den jeweiligen Songs mehr Individualität verleihen. Es sind nicht nur die markanten offensichtlichen Wendungen oder Zwischenspiele in den Songs, die den einzelnen Songs eine charakteristische Note verleihen. Es lohnt sich durchaus genauer hinzuhören, um in dem musikalischen Sturm die delikaten Feinheiten wahrzunehmen, die zweifelsfrei vorhanden sind. Die Verzierungen mit symphonischen und folkloristischen Elementen erzeugen darüber hinaus eine dichte Atmosphäre, aber sorgen ebenfalls für stimmungsvolle Überraschungen.

WALG haben mit ihrem neuen Album „IV“ alles, aber auch wirklich alles richtig gemacht. Sie haben ihren Sound perfektioniert und musizieren auf einem ungemein hohen Level. Haben sie ihren Zenit erreicht? Ich weiß es nicht, aber ich weiß, dass die Songs auf diesem Album überragend sind. Sie haben meiner Meinung nach für ihre Art der Interpretation und Darstellung des Black Metal das Beste rausgeholt. Aber vermutlich werden sie mich mit ihrer nächsten Veröffentlichung doch wieder überraschen, obwohl es schwer werden dürfte. Aber ich traue WALG alles zu! (full review)

KVAEN – „The Formless Fires“

KVAEN ist ein Soloprojekt des Musikers Jacob Björnfot. Inspiration für den Bandnamen war übrigens die Bezeichnung des Stammes, welches zur Wikingerzeit die Heimat von Jacob bevölkert hat. Jacob stammt aus Kalix im hohen Norden Schwedens. Dort schmiedet er seine dunkle Musik. Er fühlt sich sehr wohl dort abseits der großen Städte.

Es ist eine wilde Orgie, in die man hineingezogen wird. Doch es gibt hin und wieder auch Erholungsphasen, auch wenn man das nicht allzu wörtlich nehmen sollte. So wird man beim Song „De Dödas Sång“ mit akustischen Gitarrenklängen gestreichelt. Aber die Drums klopfen immer eindringlicher an und so soll es nicht lange dauern, bis der Song mit Kraft die Tür eintritt und zum Tanz auffordert. Also flott die Hufe schwingen und den Nacken kreisen lassen. „Basilisk“ feuert aus allen Rohren und ist eine wahres Feuerwerk der schwarzmetallischen Kunst, in dem wieder einmal mit einem ekstatischen Gitarrensolo Begeisterung aufkommt. Vor allem die Klänge ab Minute 02:20 finde ich super genial und haben eine ganz besondere Ausstrahlung. Kann man kaum beschreiben… muss man gehört haben.

KVAEN setzt seine Erfolgsserie mit dem neuen Album „The Formless Fires“ imposant fort. Es offenbaren sich neue hochklassige Facetten im Sound und im Songwriting. So klingt das neue Album insgesamt nicht derart finster und grob wie der Vorgänger, dafür werden dem schwarzmetallischen Sound großartige Momente geschenkt, die sich auch in einer fantastischen Gitarrenarbeit offenbaren. Das Riffing und vor allem die Solos sind ein unglaublich intensives Vergnügen und schenken den Songs einen wertvollen Glanz und auch einen epischen Touch. Für mich ist „The Formless Fires“ eine grandiose Leistung.(full review)

SUMMONER’S CIRCLE „Cult“ 

SUMMONER’S CIRCLE verflechten auf ihrem Album „Cult“ verschiedene dunkle musikalische Fäden zu einem vielschichtigen Kunstwerk, dass sich wie ein gewaltiges Monument erhebt. Ein Monument finsterer Abgründe religiöser Absurditäten und Grausamkeiten, dass perfekt mit viel Akribie umgesetzt wurde. Auf den Hörer wartet eine imposante Exkursion voller faszinierender Momente, die mit einer überwältigenden Atmosphäre fesseln. Eine Album, dass mit jedem Durchlauf mehr von seiner Genialität preisgibt.

SUMMONER’S CIRCLE gehen musikalisch allerdings feinfühliger und komplexer zu Werke, als man es vielleicht vermuten mag. Sie machen zwar extremen Metal, der grundsätzlich verdammt hart und düster klingt. Dabei haben sie aber eine progressive Herangehensweise, die mit vielerlei Überraschungen daherkommt. Die finstere Orgie aus Black, Doom & Death hat also eine Fülle von Eindrücken zu bieten, die nicht nur mit kompromissloser Härte zuschlagen, sondern eine rundum intensive Atmosphäre offenbaren.

Die symphonischen Elemente stellen eine wichtige Komponente auf dem Album dar. Die Synthies sind hier genau auf den Punkt und liefern die richtige Portion opulente Dramatik.  So markiert das instrumentale Intro „Apostle’s Dogma“ mit Glockenschlägen, Orgelklängen und Chören das Thema des Albums. Diese recht sanfte Einleitung wird vom Song „Cult of the Dead Son“ förmlich hinweggefegt. Ein musikalischer Sturm wirbelt alles umher und hinterlässt nur Zerstörung. Die Reise auf „Cult“ hat unheimlich viel zu bieten und wird den Hörer an extreme Ort führen, die faszinierend sind. (full review)

MUNAHRHEIM „Heimkehr“

Let’s start the act with a band that performs their music with German lyrics. That’s already something special. The music of MUNARHEIM is interspersed with several genres and fans of old school black metal, which only goes mercilessly into the abyss, will probably not feel comfortable here. But I really like the sound and that’s why I’ve included the album „Heimkehr“ here.

Singer Pascal screeches his way through the songs darkly and nastily. He does this exceptionally well and I understand almost every word. It’s an added bonus when you can follow the lyrical content without any major problems. This is not a matter of course in this genre. What makes the sound so unusual is the use of melodious, sublime choirs, which I think are simply wonderful. I’m a fan of that kind of thing. This is used extensively right from the opener „Sei Du Das Licht“. I was really blown away the first time I heard it! In the following songs, these choirs are phenomenally integrated into the musical worlds and repeatedly provide uplifting moments.

The other special feature of the highly melodic performance is the inclusion of symphonic sounds and folk elements, which further deepen the atmosphere. The sound has enough brute phases that sound uncompromisingly hard and vicious, but it’s certainly not a super hard album by black metal standards. But that doesn’t bother me at all, because I was captivated by the sophisticated compositions. It’s probably the only album on this list where I felt invited to sing along fervently. That’s why I particularly enjoy listening to the album when the family is out of the house.

WELTENBRANDT – „Transzendenz Schatten Romantik“

WELTENBRANDT are also acting with German vocals. They have made a spectacular return with „Transzendenz Schatten Romantik“. The album offers you intoxicating musical landscapes. It is a mix of brute elements and dreamlike melodies. It is a dance in a storm of emotions!

More tragic epicness has also been added to the sound. This is clearly demonstrated with the opulent introduction of the opener „Melancholia Urgewalt“. With orchestral elements such as strings and piano, dreamlike melodies are heard that are embedded in the monumental construct and breathe a special magic into the tragic melancholy. This song is not as energetic as „Apotropaion“, but has its strengths in its oppressive epic appearance.

WELTENBRANDT attach great importance to quieter interludes, which form a harmonious connection with the extreme and wild passages. Even the two instrumental interludes fit in wonderfully and promote immersion in the musical paintings of WELTENBRANDT. Of course, pummeling blastbeat orgies make for stormy times, but the expressive sound has much more substance to offer and fills the time with many moments that are also impressive away from the storms. (full review)

SIDUS ATRUM – “Розірване Небо (Torn Sky)” 

Many people don’t like to call black metal emotional music. I would definitely disagree with that, because I have heard so many bands and musicians who can convey an incredible amount of emotion in this extreme form of music. This is also the case with the Ukrainian band SIDUS ATRUM. I can feel anger, despair, sadness and a lot of pain in their songs. „Коли землля кричала (When The Earth Cried Out)“ is an example of this, which, with its blatant vehemence and lots of melodic background music, together with the video, provides a very intense visual and auditory experience. The monumental final track „Пульс Житття (Puls Of Life)“ is also a highly emotional song that touched me deeply.

With their album „Torn Sky“, SIDUS ATRUM embody all the cruelty and suffering that war brings with it. This form of extreme musical representation is the perfect way to convey this horrific theme. It is an album with impressive and penetrating songs that move the listener and inevitably draw them mercilessly into the dark hell from which the album was created. Don’t close your eyes and ears and dare to live this dark experience. (full review)

WAIDELOTTE „Celestial Shrine“

My colleague Matt reviewed the Ukrainian band’s debut album. I share his opinion and am therefore quoting passages from his review:

This album promises a unique blend of progressive, black and folk metal elements. It showcases the creative skills of its members, who hail from renowned bands such as WHITE WARD and SOEN. Led by main composer and bassist Oleksii „Zlatoyar“ Kobel, WAIDELOTTE delivers a captivating narrative characterized by aggressive riffs, driving rhythms and haunting vocals. All underlined by the rich textures of Ukrainian instruments such as the duduk and bandura.

The album delivers multi-layered music with a high level of complexity. Definitely nothing to listen to on the side. Because more than a dozen creative, music-making minds belong to the band. And they have put all their skills into this work of art. There are tracks that are only carried by polyphonic, traditional instruments or epic choir passages. And then suddenly all hell breaks loose and powerful extreme metal pours down on your ears. Most of the time, however, these two seemingly incompatible worlds harmonize perfectly with each other. Absolutely worth listening to! (full review)

WALG „IV“

WALG’s style is unmistakable. Once you’ve heard it once, you’ll hear it again and again. The way they combine instrumentation and vocals is striking, especially as the vocals are belted out in the Dutch language. Their interpretation of black metal is highly melodic, incredibly wild and aggressive. They also like to incorporate folk elements, which I personally really appreciate. I find the combination of folk and black metal very fascinating anyway.

I have noticed with enthusiasm that WALG have now placed even more emphasis on ingredients that give the respective songs more individuality. It’s not just the striking, obvious turns of phrase or interludes in the songs that give the individual songs a characteristic note. It is definitely worth listening more closely in order to perceive the delicate subtleties that are undoubtedly present in the musical storm. The embellishments with symphonic and folkloristic elements also create a dense atmosphere, but also provide atmospheric surprises.

WALG have done everything, but really everything, right with their new album „IV“. They have perfected their sound and are making music at an incredibly high level. Have they reached their zenith? I don’t know, but I do know that the songs on this album are outstanding. In my opinion, they have brought out the best in their interpretation and presentation of black metal. But they will probably surprise me again with their next release, although it will be difficult. But I trust WALG to do anything! (full review)

KVAEN – „The Formless Fires“

KVAEN is a solo project by musician Jacob Björnfot. The inspiration for the band name was the name of the tribe that populated Jacob’s homeland during the Viking Age. Jacob comes from Kalix in the far north of Sweden. That’s where he forges his dark music. He feels very much at home there, away from the big cities.

It’s a wild orgy that you get drawn into. But there are also occasional relaxation phases, even if you shouldn’t take that too literally. In the song „De Dödas Sång“, for example, you are caressed with acoustic guitar sounds. But the drums knock more and more insistently and so it doesn’t take long for the song to force its way in and invite you to dance. So swing your hooves and let your neck spin. „Basilisk“ fires from all cylinders and is a veritable firework display of black metal art, in which an ecstatic guitar solo once again generates enthusiasm. I find the sounds from minute 02:20 in particular super ingenious and have a very special aura. You can hardly describe it… you have to hear it.

KVAEN impressively continues its successful streak with the new album „The Formless Fires“. New high-class facets are revealed in the sound and songwriting. Overall, the new album doesn’t sound as dark and coarse as its predecessor, but the black metal sound is given some great moments, which are also revealed in the fantastic guitar work. The riffing and especially the solos are an incredibly intense pleasure and give the songs a valuable sheen and an epic touch. For me, „The Formless Fires“ is a magnificent journey.(full review)

SUMMONER’S CIRCLE „Cult“ 

On their album „Cult“, SUMMONER’S CIRCLE interweave various dark musical threads into a multi-layered work of art that rises up like a mighty monument. A monument to dark abysses of religious absurdities and cruelties, perfectly and meticulously realized. Listeners can expect an impressive excursion full of fascinating moments that captivate with an overwhelming atmosphere. An album that reveals more of its genius with every listen.

However, SUMMONER’S CIRCLE’s musical approach is more sensitive and complex than you might expect. They play extreme metal that sounds damn hard and dark. However, they have a progressive approach that comes with many surprises. The dark orgy of Black, Doom & Death therefore has a wealth of impressions to offer, which not only strike with uncompromising heaviness, but also reveal an all-round intense atmosphere.

The symphonic elements are an important component of the album. The synths are right on point here and deliver the right amount of opulent drama.  The instrumental intro „Apostle’s Dogma“ marks the theme of the album with chimes, organ sounds and choirs. This rather gentle introduction is literally swept away by the song „Cult of the Dead Son“. A musical storm whirls everything around and leaves only destruction on its way. The journey on „Cult“ has an incredible amount to offer and will take the listener to extreme places that are fascinating. (full review)

WALG (Homepage/Facebook) aus den Niederlanden waren seit meinem ersten Kontakt mit ihrem Album „II“ in meiner Favoritenliste gelandet. Die Albumtitel mögen zwar nicht so einfallsreich sein, aber die Musik ist der absolute Burner. Die Alben „II“ (Review) und „III“ (Review) haben bei mir jeweils 10 Punkte kassiert, weil sie einfach ein grandioses Hörerlebnis bieten.

Der Stil von WALG ist unverkennbar. Wenn man sie einmal gehört hat, dann wird man sie immer wieder sofort heraushören. Die Art und Weise der Kombination von Instrumentierung und Vocals sind prägnant, zumal die Vocals in der niederländischen Landessprache geschmettert werden. Ihre Interpretation des Black Metal ist hochmelodisch, unheimlich wild und aggressiv. Dabei bringen sie gerne auch mal Folkelemente mit ein, was ich persönlich sehr schätze. Die Kombination aus Folk und Black Metal finde ich sowieso sehr faszinierend.

Unbändige Wildheit

Hier ziehen die dunklen Wolken nicht langsam auf, um das Unheil anzukündigen. Der Opener „Radeloos“ lässt das Soundgewitter direkt niederprasseln. Ich fühle mich sofort in die WALG-Welt katapultiert. Die Gitarrenleads spielen wie gewohnt völlig ungezähmt auf und sorgen für rasend schöne Melodien. Die leichten symphonischen Klänge im Hintergrund perfektionieren die Atmosphäre dieses genialen Songs. Auch die choralen Gesänge im Mittelteil des Songs lockern das Ganze auf und sind famos integriert.

Den dunklen Zenit erreicht?

Ich habe mit Begeisterung wahrgenommen, dass WALG nun noch mehr Wert auf Ingredienzen gelegt haben, die den jeweiligen Songs mehr Individualität verleihen. Es sind nicht nur die markanten offensichtlichen Wendungen oder Zwischenspiele in den Songs, die den einzelnen Songs eine charakteristische Note verleihen. Es lohnt sich durchaus genauer hinzuhören, um in dem musikalischen Sturm die delikaten Feinheiten wahrzunehmen, die zweifelsfrei vorhanden sind. Die Verzierungen mit symphonischen und folkloristischen Elementen erzeugen darüber hinaus eine dichte Atmosphäre, aber sorgen ebenfalls für stimmungsvolle Überraschungen.

Ich picke mir einfach mal einige Songs heraus, um die o.g. Feststellungen beispielhaft kurz zu erläutern. Es fällt allerdings schwer, sich Favoriten herauszupicken, denn die Songs sind allesamt mal wieder auf einem fantastischen Level. „Als Een Korrel Zand“ bezaubert zunächst mit seinem ruhigen folkloristischen Beginn. Der Kontrast zu den unbändigen wilden Passagen ist krass, aber es passt alles zusammen. Das folkloristische Thema wird später im Song noch einmal aufgegriffen und es klingt einfach wunderbar. Es passiert wirklich viel in dem Song. Monotonie ist hier ein Fremdwort. Das ist epischer Black Metal!

Der unheilvoll bedrohlich klingende Beginn von „Geen Einde In Zicht“ hört sich großartig an. Im Verlauf bereichern verschiedene Elemente den Song, wie z.B. der cleane Gesang im Mittelpart, nach dem noch mal das akustische Thema vom Beginn aufgegriffen wird. Zum Ende hin wird es noch mal ruhiger und folkloristisch. Ich bin auch der Meinung, dass sich das Gitarrenspiel nochmals weiterentwickelt hat. Es ist noch differenzierter geworden und setzt noch mehr Akzente, vor allem in melodischer Hinsicht. Dies wird auch im Song „Foltering“ sehr deutlich. Er zeigt ebenfalls das Talent mit verschiedenen Stimmungen innerhalb eines Songs zu spielen.

Fazit

WALG haben mit ihrem neuen Album „IV“ alles, aber auch wirklich alles richtig gemacht. Sie haben ihren Sound perfektioniert und musizieren auf einem ungemein hohen Level. Haben sie ihren Zenit erreicht? Ich weiß es nicht, aber ich weiß, dass die Songs auf diesem Album überragend sind. Sie haben meiner Meinung nach für ihre Art der Interpretation und Darstellung des Black Metal das Beste rausgeholt. Aber vermutlich werden sie mich mit ihrer nächsten Veröffentlichung doch wieder überraschen, obwohl es schwer werden dürfte. Aber ich traue WALG alles zu!

WALG (Homepage/Facebook) from the Netherlands have been on my favorites list since my first contact with their album „II“. All their album titles may not be that imaginative, but the music is an absolute burner. The albums „II“ (review) and „III“(review) both scored 10 points with me because they simply offer a terrific listening experience.

WALG’s style is unmistakable. Once you’ve heard them once, you’ll immediately recognize them again and again. The way they combine instrumentation and vocals is striking, especially as the vocals are belted out in the Dutch language. Their interpretation of black metal is highly melodic, incredibly wild and aggressive. They also like to incorporate folk elements, which I personally really appreciate. I find the combination of folk and black metal very fascinating anyway.

Unbridled savagery

The dark clouds are not slowly gathering here to herald disaster. The opener „Radeloos“ lets the musical thunderstorm of sound crash down directly. I immediately feel catapulted into the world of WALG. As usual, the guitar leads are completely untamed and make for some ragingly beautiful melodies. The light symphonic sounds in the background perfect the atmosphere of this brilliant song. The choral vocals in the middle section of the song also loosen up the whole thing and are perfectly integrated.

Epic black metal

I have noticed with enthusiasm that WALG have now placed even more emphasis on ingredients that give the respective songs more individuality. It’s not just the obvious twists and turns or interludes in the songs that give the individual songs a characteristic note. It is well worth listening more closely in order to perceive the delicate subtleties that are undoubtedly present in the musical storm. The embellishments with various symphonic and folkloristic elements also create a dense atmosphere, but also provide atmospheric surprises.

I’ll just pick out a few songs to briefly explain the above statements by way of example. It’s hard to pick favorites, though, because the songs are once again all on a fantastic level. „Als Een Korrel Zand“ initially enchants with its calm folkloristic beginning. The contrast to the unruly wild passages is stark, but it all fits together. The folkloristic theme is taken up again later in the song and it sounds simply wonderful. There really is a lot going on in the song. Monotony is a foreign word here. This is epic black metal!

The ominously threatening sounding beginning of „Geen Einde In Zicht“ sounds terrific. Various elements enrich the song as it progresses, such as the clean vocals in the middle section, after which the acoustic theme from the beginning is picked up again. Towards the end, it becomes quieter and more folky. I would also like to point out that the guitar playing has actually developed further. It has become even more differentiated and sets even more accents, especially melodically. This is also very clear in the song „Foltering“. It also shows the talent to play with different moods within a song.

Conclusion

WALG have done everything right with their new album „IV“. They have further perfected their already grandiose music and scaled new epic heights. Have they reached their highest peak? I don’t know, but I do know that the songs on this album are outstanding. They have, in my opinion, brought out the best in their personal interpretation and representation of black metal. But they will probably surprise me again with their next release, although it will be difficult. But I trust WALG to do anything!

METALHEADs Toplist 2023 – Black Metal: BIZARREKULT, MOONLIGHT SORCERY, WALG, CRAVING, NIGHT CROWNED!

BIZARREKULT

BIZARREKULT (Facebook/Bandcamp) ist ein Projekt, dessen Saatkorn bereits vor 16 Jahren im Kopf von Roman V. gepflanzt wurde. Bevor er allerdings seinen Weg zur Musik fand, war der Multi-Instrumentalist zunächst ein Dichter. Seit seiner Kindheit fand Roman ein Ventil im Schreiben, und 2006 gründete er schließlich BIZARREKULT als akustische Begleitung und Untermalung seiner verbalen Äußerungen.

Musik ist vielflältige Kunst! Auch Black Metal stellt eine Kunstform dar, die oft unterschätzt wird und sich mit Vorurteilen rumplagen muss. BIZARREKULT beweisen ebenfalls, dass Black Metal kreativ und sogar emotional werden kann. „Du Lovet Meg“ („Du hast es versprochen“) als Opener unterstreicht diesen Aspekt. Zunächst geht es traditionell mit Blastbeats und extremen Vocals an den Start, was wütende Verzweiflung offenbart. Aber plötzlich wird alles anders…. Lieblicher Frauengesang von Dina übernimmt die Hauptrolle in einer ruhigen meditativen Passage. Was für eine verletzliche Komponente in dieser harten Welt!

Man merkt den Songs an, dass sie Gefühle verarbeiten und bestimmte Botschaften verinnerlichen, die der Künstler mit entsprechenden musikalischen Mitteln ausdrückt. Daher ist es kein BLACK METAL, der ausnahmslos Druck macht und nach vorne prescht. Hier wird vielmehr Wert auf eine intensive Atmosphäre gelegt.

Das Album bietet eine Reihe von tollen und intensiven Momenten. Es ist wahrlich kein Werk, was sich schnell offenbart, sondern nach und nach immer mehr von sich preisgibt und seine Wirkung entfaltet. Gleichförmigkeit ist hier ein Fremdwort. Die Mischung von atmosphärischem Doom mit der furiosen Wildheit des Black Metal bildet zusammen ein fesselndes Konstrukt, dass sogar mit epischen Momenten aufwarten kann.

MOONLIGHT SORCERY

MOONLIGHT SORCERY (Facebook) aus Finnland und gibt es seit 2018. Nun haben sie dieses Jahr ihr Debüt „Horned Lord Of The Throned Castle“ auferstehen lassen. Leider habe ich dieses Album erst später entdeckt. Kann ja mal passieren bei der Flut von Veröffentlichungen. Zum Glück ist es mir doch noch zu Ohren gekommen, denn es hat mich so sehr umgehauen, dass ich ein kurzes Review hier an dieser Stelle nachholen muss. Denn dieses Debüt hat einen Platz in der Toplist mehr als verdient.

Was die Finnen hier zum Besten geben, ist der Wahnsinn. Absolut ausgereifte Songs, die melodischen Black Metal von allerfeinster Güte entstehen lassen. Dazu gesellt sich noch ein dezenter symphonischer Einschlag, der das Ganze noch epischer werden lässt. Hier wird an allen Fronten geballert, was die Instrumente hergeben. Aber es entsteht kein Chaos oder ein Soundbrei, denn die Band versteht sich darauf fantastische Kompositionen zu erschaffen, die mit einer eindrucksvollen instrumentalen Darbietung gewürdigt werden, die alles detailgetreu mit allen Feinheiten rüberbringt. Da geht auch ein Dank an die erstklassige Produktion raus.

Lebendig melodisch

Wer den Opener „To Withhold The Day“ hört, wird direkt diese super Qualität erkennen und sich darin verlieben. An den Drums wird eine unglaublich lebendige Energie entfesselt. Und dann diese geilen Gitarren! Die rasanten Riffs sind der Wahnsinn und die megastarken Leads fliegen nur so durch den Sound und mittendrin werden noch epische Solos entfesselt. Ich würde sogar so weit gehen zu behaupten, dass ich noch keine bessere Leadgitarre im Black Metal gehört habe als hier. Damit haben MOONLIGHT SORCERY wirklich ein sehr prägnantes Qualitätsmerkmal. Dazu muss man sich nur mal den Instrumentaltrack „The Moonlit Dance of the Twisted Jester’s Blood-soaked Rituals“ reinziehen. Ich stehe eigentlich gar nicht so auf reine Instrumentaltracks, aber dieses Ding hat mich echt beeindruckt. Wahnsinn!

MOONLIGHT SORCERY ist mit ihrem Album „“Horned Lord Of The Throned Castle“ direkt ein Hammeralbum gelungen. Hier offenbart sich ein unglaubliches Potential, dass bereits jetzt unglaublich beeindruckt und eine mehr als vielversprechende Vision für weitere großartige musikalische Werke darstellt. Dieser Band sollte man unbedingt folgen!

„In Coldest Embrace“

WALG

Zwei Männer aus den Niederlanden stehen für WALG (Facebook/Bandcamp). Und sie erschaffen epischen Black Metal auf höchstem Niveau. Und sie sind verdammt fleißig, denn nach dem Album „II“ haben sie nur ein Jahr benötigt, um ihr Album „III“ zu veröffentlichen.

WALG gehen mit der gewohnten Vehemenz vor. Immer noch ist dieser Wahnsinn und diese Wut in den Vocals, was den Sound so auszeichnet. Aber das ist nicht alles.

Man nutzt dezente symphonische Elemente, um den Sound noch mehr Tiefe zu verleihen. Außerdem spielt man hin und wieder mit cleanen Vocals in Form von sakralen Chören, die alles etwas auflockern und für eine mystische Komponente sorgen. Die Songs sind nach wie vor eine Wucht, ein gnadenloser Sturm, in dem sich melodische Winde entfesseln und die mystische Komponente immer irgendwo mitweht. Dies wird vor allem beim Song „Geselberg“ deutlich, der zu Beginn mit den Klängen eines Didgeridoo eingeleitet wird. Im Verlauf erklingen im Hintergrund rituale Gesänge. 

Es gibt auf dem Album als Bonus noch eine gnadenlos gute Coverversion von dem Song „Mourning Palace“, der im Original von DIMMU BORGIR komponiert wurde.man muss sagen, dass das ruppige WALG-Gewand dem Song unheimlich gut steht. Eine monumentale Interpretation und Würdigung des Originals. Die typischen Melodien des Originals sind deutlich erkennbar und der epische Ansatz wird eindrucksvoll umgesetzt, wobei der Song eine Extraportion Härte und Wahnsinn verpasst bekommt. (Review)

„Geselberg“

CRAVING

CRAVING (Facebook) sind ein Metal Act aus Deutschland, der schwer in eine Schublade zu stecken ist, denn gerade auf dem neuen Album „Call Of The Sirens“ geht es sehr vielseitig zu. Aufgrund des größtenteils überaus wütenden und martialischen Sounds habe ich CRAVING in die Black Metal in diese Kategorie gepackt. Ich kann damit gut leben und ich hoffe, dass ihr es auch könnt.

„Call Of The Sirens“ war die erste Singleauskopplung und hatte mich auf Anhieb in ihren Bann gezogen. CRAVING impliziert viel Heavy Metal in seine Songs, was die ganze Musikgewaltigkeit auflockert und natürlich der Melodik sehr gelegen kommt. Darüber hinaus lassen CRAVING epische Momente wahr werden. Dies hört man bei „Call Of The Sirens“ direkt bei der ausgedehnten Einleitung des Songs mit seinen krachenden Riffs. Zusammen mit den furiosen Drums ist der Einstieg schon mal sehr imposant gelungen. Sodann geht es zur Sache mit den harschen Vocals von Ivan Chertov. Ivan kennt keine Gnade, wenn er seiner Energie freien Lauf lässt. Hin und wieder fallen die herausragenden Chöre in den Songs auf.  Sie sorgen immer wieder für tolle Momente in dem ansonsten rüden wütenden Sound.

CRAVING ist mit „Call Of Sirens“ ein Geniestreich gelungen. Man hat die schon vorhandenen Stärken weiter ausgebaut und sogar neue hinzugefügt, um es zu einem komplexen ausgereiften musikalischen Kunstwerk zu formen. Mit einer ungeheuren Energie und Ideenvielfalt zelebrieren CRAVING epische Geschichten und lassen es dabei gehörig krachen. Dabei offenbaren CRAVING viel Originalität und Spielwitz. „Call Of Sirens“ ist härter geworden und diese Härte steht dem Sound sehr gut zu Gesicht, was sich vor allem auch in der erstklassigen druckvollen detailreichen Produktion niederschlägt. (Review)

NIGHT CROWNED

Von NIGHT CROWNED (Facebook) hatte ich sehr viel erwartet. Denn bereits mit ihrem Vorgänger „Hädanfärd“ (Review) aus dem Jahr 2021 hatten sie eine dunkle Perle des modernen melodischen Black Metal erschaffen und dies wurde von mir mit der Höchstpunktzahl gewürdigt. Deshalb war ich irre gespannt, was sie für neue dunkle Geschichten erschaffen würden. Tatsächlich heißt ihr neues Album schlichtweg „Tales“. Und sie haben es mit Bravour geschafft mein Black Metal Album des Jahres 2023 zu erschaffen.

Mit flammendem Herzen und brutaler Energie stürmen NIGHT CROWNED drauflos. Es zeichnet sie aus, dass ihre Songs voller feiner Details sind und die Grenzen des Genres gekonnt ausloten. Der Songaufbau bleibt jederzeit brutal spannend und vielseitig. Es wird eben nicht nur monoton drauflos geprügelt, dass die Fetzen fliegen. Bei NIGHT CROWNED geht es um mehr. Sie lassen eine epische Melodik und ochestrale Elemente einfließen, um sich dann immer wieder mit voller Wucht in die tosenden Fluten zu schmeißen.

Ich begrüße z.B auch den neuen folkischen Ansatz, der sich bereits im zweiten Song „She Comes At Night“ manefestiert. Ein hochgradig melodisches Erlebnis mit einer stimmungsvollen Instrumentierung, dass den Black Metal in andere Dimensionen vordringen lässt. Die weiblichen Vocals von Gastsängerin Therése Thomsson intensivieren zusätzlich die Atmosphäre.

NIGHT CROWNED erschaffen auf „Tales“ Geschichten, die ein opulentes unheilvolles Drama in dunkler epischer Pracht beschreiben. Der Sound ist noch orchestraler und reichhaltiger geworden. Die Produktion hat noch mehr Volumen bekommen. Man hat das Gefühl Teil eines finsteren monumentalen Fantasyfilms zu sein. „Tales“ ist ein actionlastiger epischer Blockbuster und die perfekte Fortsetzung der Reise von NIGHT CROWNED. (Review)

BIZARREKULT

BIZARREKULT (Facebook/Bandcamp) is a project whose seed was planted in Roman V.’s head 16 years ago. Before he found his way to music, however, the multi-instrumentalist was initially a poet. Since his childhood, Roman found an outlet in writing, and in 2006 he finally founded BIZARREKULT as an acoustic accompaniment and backdrop to his verbal utterances.

Music is a multifaceted art! Black metal is also an art form that is often underestimated and has to deal with prejudices. BIZARREKULT also prove that black metal can be creative and even emotional. „Du Lovet Meg“ („You promised“) as the opener underlines this aspect. It starts traditionally with blast beats and extreme vocals, revealing furious despair. But suddenly everything changes…. Lovely female vocals by Dina take over the leading role in a quiet meditative passage. What a vulnerable component in this harsh world!

You can tell that the songs process emotions and internalize certain messages, which the artist expresses with appropriate musical means. That’s why it’s not only wild aggressive BLACK METAL. Instead, emphasis is placed on creating an intense atmosphere.

The album offers a range of great and intense moments. It is truly not a work that reveals itself quickly, but gradually reveals more and more of itself and unfolds its effect. Uniformity is a foreign word here. The mixture of atmospheric doom with the furious ferocity of black metal forms a captivating construct that can even come up with epic moments.

MOONLIGHT SORCERY

MOONLIGHT SORCERY (Facebook/Bandcamp) from Finland and have been around since 2018. Now they have resurrected their longplayer debut „Horned Lord Of The Throned Castle“ this year with the label ‚Avantgarde Music‚. Unfortunately, I only discovered this album later. It can happen with the flood of releases. Fortunately, it did come to my attention, because it blew me away so much that I have to make up for it with a short review here. Because this debut more than deserves a place in the top list.

What the Finns deliver here is insane. Absolutely mature songs that create melodic black metal of the very finest quality. There’s also a subtle symphonic touch that makes the whole thing even more epic. The instrumental art is a blast. There is no chaos or sound mash, because the band knows how to create fantastic compositions, which are honored with an impressive instrumental performance that conveys everything in detail with all its subtleties. Thanks also go to the first-class production.

Lively melodic energy

Anyone listening to the opener „To Withhold The Day“ will immediately recognize this flawless quality and fall in love with it. An incredibly lively melodic energy is unleashed on the drums. And then those awesome guitars! The fast-paced riffs are insane and the strong leads fly through the sound and epic solos are unleashed in the middle of it all. I would even go so far as to say that I have never heard a better lead guitar in Black Metal than here. MOONLIGHT SORCERY really have a very concise quality feature. All you have to do is listen to the instrumental track „The Moonlit Dance of the Twisted Jester’s Blood-soaked Rituals“. I’m not really into pure instrumental tracks, but this thing really impressed me. Awesome!

With their album „“Horned Lord Of The Throned Castle“, MOONLIGHT SORCERY have succeeded in creating a fantastic album. It reveals a great potential that is already incredibly impressive and represents a more than promising vision for further great musical works. You should definitely follow and support this band!

„In Coldest Embrace“

Two men from the Netherlands stand for WALG (Facebook/Bandcamp). And they create epic black metal. And they are damn busy, because after the album „II“ it only took them a year to release their album „III“.

WALG proceed with their usual vehemence. There is still this madness and anger in the vocals, which characterizes the sound. But that’s not all. They use subtle symphonic elements to give the sound even more depth. They also play with clean vocals in the form of sacred choirs from time to time. The songs are still a force to be reckoned with, a merciless storm in which melodic winds are unleashed and the mystical component is always blowing along somewhere. This is particularly evident in the song „Geselberg“, which opens with the sounds of a didgeridoo. As the song progresses, ritual chants can be heard in the background.

The album also features a mercilessly good cover version of the song „Mourning Palace“, which was originally composed by DIMMU BORGIR. It has to be said that the rough WALG guise suits the song incredibly well. A monumental interpretation and tribute to the original. The typical melodies of the original are clearly recognizable and the epic approach is impressively implemented, giving the song an extra dose of heaviness and madness. (Review)

„Geselberg“

CRAVING

CRAVING (Facebook) are a metal act from Germany that is difficult to pigeonhole, as their new album „Call Of The Sirens“ is very diverse. Due to the mostly extremely angry and martial sound, I put CRAVING in the Black Metal category. I can live with that and I hope you can too.

„Call Of The Sirens“ was the first single release and immediately had me under its spell. CRAVING imply a lot of heavy metal in their songs, which loosens up the whole musical violence and of course comes in very handy for the melodicism. Furthermore, CRAVING make epic moments come true. You can hear this in „Call Of The Sirens“ right from the extended introduction of the song with its crashing riffs. Together with the furious drums, the introduction is already very impressive. Then it gets down to business with the harsh vocals of Ivan Chertov. Ivan shows no mercy when he lets his energy run free. Every now and then, the outstanding choirs in the songs catch the ear. They always provide great moments in the otherwise rude, angry sound.

CRAVING have achieved a stroke of genius with „Call Of Sirens“. They have built on existing strengths and even added new ones to create a complex, mature musical work of art. CRAVING celebrate epic stories with a tremendous amount of energy and diversity of ideas and really let it rip. In doing so, CRAVING reveal a great deal of originality and wit. „Call Of Sirens“ has become heavier and this heaviness suits the sound very well, which is reflected above all in the first-class, powerful and detailed production. NIGHT CROWNED

I had expected a lot from NIGHT CROWNED (Facebook). Because with their predecessor „Hädanfärd“ (review) from 2021, they had already created a dark pearl of modern melodic Black metal and I gave them the highest score. So I was excited to see what new dark stories they would create. In fact, their new album is simply called „Tales“. And they managed to create my black metal album of the year 2023 with flying colors.

NIGHT CROWNED storm on with a flaming heart and brutal energy. What sets them apart is that their songs are full of fine details and skillfully explore the boundaries of the genre. The song structure remains brutally exciting and versatile at all times. It is just not only monotonously pure frenzy. NIGHT CROWNED is more. They let an epic melody and ochestral elements flow in, to then throw themselves again and again with full force into the thundering floods.

I also like the new folk approach that is already established in the second song „She Comes At Night“. A highly melodic experience with an atmospheric instrumentation that lets the Black Metal advance into other dimensions. The female vocals of guest vocalist Therése Thomsson further intensify the atmosphere of this impressive epic gem. 

NIGHT CROWNED create stories that describe an opulent ominous drama in dark epic splendor. The sound on „Tales“ has become even more orchestral and rich. The sound has improved even further. It creates a feeling of being part of a sinister monumental fantasy film. „Tales“ from NIGHT CROWNED is an action-heavy epic blockbuster and the perfect continuation of their journey. (Review)

Zwei Männer aus den Niederlanden stehen für WALG (Facebook/Bandcamp). Ihr letztes Album „II“ ist vor einem Jahr im Februar erschienen. Als ich es schließlich glücklicherweise im Sommerurlaub beim Stöbern entdeckt habe, war ich hin und weg von dem Sound. Und tatsächlich habe ich ihnen den Preis für das beste Black Metal Album 2022 verliehen. Die Messlatte hängt dementsprechend hoch und ich bin sehr gespannt, was die Beiden nach nur einem Jahr geschaffen haben. Da die gesamte Produktion in Eigenarbeit passiert, sind sie tatsächlich in der Lage schnell und unkompliziert Musik zu erschaffen. An Tatendrang fehlt es den Männern jedenfalls nicht. Das neue Abum „III“ erscheint am 12.01.’23.

Der epische Ansatz

des letzten Albums wird weitergeführt. So viel wird nach den ersten Augenblicken klar. WALG gehen mit der gewohnten Vehemenz vor. Immer noch ist dieser Wahnsinn und diese Wut in den Vocals, was den Sound so auszeichnet. Aber das ist nicht alles.

Entgegen meiner sonstigen Gewohnheiten möchte ich hier mit dem Bonus-Track „Mourning Palace“ beginnen. Im Original von DIMMU BORGIR komponiert, haben WALG nun ihre Version daraus gemacht. Und man muss sagen, dass das ruppige WALG-Gewand dem Song unheimlich gut steht. Eine monumentale Interpretation und Würdigung des Originals. Die typischen Melodien des Originals sind deutlich erkennbar und der epische Ansatz wird eindrucksvoll umgesetzt, wobei der Song eine Extraportion Härte und Wahnsinn verpasst bekommt.

Vom Ende zum Anfang! Ich komme zum Opener „Daar Waar We Komen Om Te Sterven“. Sofort erkennt man die musikalische Handschrift von WALG, welche den Sound mal wieder einmal zu einem exorbitanten Erlebnis macht. Man nutzt dezente symphonische Elemente, um den Sound noch mehr Tiefe zu verleihen. Außerdem spielt man hin und wieder mit cleanen Vocals, die alles etwas auflockern. Dieses Element, welches auch mal gerne in sakralen Chören endet, fördert die Vielseitigkeit und die Ausstrahlung der Songs.

Ein Sturm

WALG fahren wieder mächtig auf und an den Songs gibt es nix zu mäkeln. Alles klingt sehr ausgereift und stimming. Mir erscheinen die Leadgitarren nun noch etwas präsenter und ich meine mehr Details im Sound zu vernehmen. Die Männer haben wohl weiter an der Produktion herumgefeilt und diese weiter optimiert, obwohl das letzte Album schon super geklungen hat.

Die Songs sind nach wie vor eine Wucht, ein gnadenloser Sturm, in dem sich melodische Winde entfesseln und die mystische Komponente immer irgendwo mitweht. Dies wird vor allem beim Song „Geselberg“ deutlich, der zu Beginn mit den Klängen eines Didgeridoo eingeleitet wird. Im Verlauf erklingen im Hintergrund rituale Gesänge. Für mich ist der Song ein Pondon zum Song „Verlossing“ vom letzten Album.

Fazit

Für das nächste Album würde ich mir konsequentere Schritte wünschen, die im Sound deutlichere Akzente setzen. Manche Elemente könnten noch meiner Meinung nach noch stringenter herausgearbeitet werden, um den einzelnen Songs mehr Extravaganz angedeihen zu lassen. Hier würden mir z.B. die folkloristischen Klänge einfallen. Ich erinnere an den Song „Verlossing“, der mit seinen ganz speziellen folkloristischen Klängen einer ‚Launeddas“ (traditionellen Instrument aus Sardinien) echt coole Akzente gesetzt hat. Dies hätte man meiner Meinung nach auf diesem Album noch stärker intensivieren können. Der Stil des Cover-Songs ist auch etwas, was man im Hinterkopf behalten könnte.

Nichtsdestotrotz haben WALG mit „III“ wieder ein gewaltiges Black-Metal-Epos erschaffen und super abgeliefert. Das steht außer Frage! Im Prinzip treffen meine Eindrücke vom letzten Album genauso auf dieses Album zu, was auch kein schlechtes Zeichen ist, sondern eher ein Qualitätsmerkmal. Und deswegen vergebe ich für dieses Album noch einmal die Höchstpunktzahl.

Übrigens möchte ich noch anmerken, dass mir der visuelle Style ebenfalls sehr gut gefällt. Die einzelnen Cover, welche für die Singles gefertigt wurden oder auch das Albumcover sind wahre Kunst und vermitteln eine perfekte Atmosphäre zu der Musik.

English review

Melodic Black Metal

Two men from the Netherlands stand for the Black Metal band WALG (Facebook/Bandcamp). Their latest album „II“ was released a year ago in February. When I finally luckily discovered it while browsing some music during my summer vacation, I was blown away by the sound. And in fact, I gave them the award for the best Black Metal Album 2022. The bar is accordingly high and I’m very excited to see what the two have made music after only one year. Since the entire production happens in self-work, they are actually able to create music quickly and easily. In any case, the men are not lacking in drive. The new album „III“ will be released on 12.01.’23.

The epic approach

of the last album is continued. That much becomes clear after the first moments. WALG proceed with the usual vehemence. Still there is this madness and rage in the vocals, which makes the sound so special. But that’s not all.

Contrary to my usual habits, I would like to start here with the bonus track „Mourning Palace“. Originally composed by DIMMU BORGIR, WALG have now made their version of it. And it must be said that the gruff WALG garb suits the song incredibly well. A monumental interpretation and appreciation of the original. The typical melodies of the original are clearly recognizable and the epic approach is impressively implemented, while the song gets an extra portion of WALG hardness.

From the end to the beginning! I come to the opener „Daar Waar We Komen Om Te Sterven“. Immediately you can recognize the musical signature of WALG, which once again makes the sound an exorbitant experience. They use discreet symphonic elements to give the sound even more depth. In addition, one plays now and then with clean vocals, which loosen up everything a little bit. This element, which sometimes ends in sacred choirs, promotes the versatility and the charisma of the songs.

A storm

WALG are again powerful and there is nothing to complain about the songs. Everything sounds very mature and tuned. To me, the lead guitars now seem a bit more present and I think I hear more details in the sound. The two guys have probably continued to tweak and optimize the production, although the last album already sounded great.

The songs are still a blast, a merciless storm in which melodic winds are unleashed and the mystical component always blows along somewhere. This is especially heard in the song „Geselberg“, which is introduced at the beginning with the sounds of a didgeridoo. Further on ritual chants sound in the background. For me, the song is a pondon to the song „Verlossing“ from the last album.

Conclusion

For the next album I would like to see more consistent steps that set clearer accents in the sound. Some elements could still be worked out more stringently in my opinion, to give the individual songs more extravagance. Here, for example, the folkloristic sounds would come to my mind. I remember the song „Verlossing“, which set really cool accents with its very special folkloristic sounds of a ‚Launeddas“ (traditional instrument from Sardinia). In my opinion, this could have been intensified even more in the whole sound. The cover song style is also something to keep in mind.

Nevertheless, WALG have created with „III“ again a huge black metal epic. There is no question about that! My impressions of the last album apply equally to this album, which is also not a bad sign, but rather a mark of quality. And that’s why I also give this album the highest score.

By the way, I would like to note that I also like the visual style very much. The individual covers, which were made for the singles or also the album cover are true art and convey a perfect atmosphere to the music.

METALHEADs Toplist begibt sich in die finsteren Welten des Black Metal. Es ist zu einem faszinierenden Genre geworden, dass mit sehr facettenreicher Musik glänzen kann. Mittlerweile bedienen sich manche Bands ganz besonderer musikalischer Zutaten, so dass man eher progressiver Musik sprechen kann. So hätte ich sicherlich die ersten beiden Bands auch in die Sparte Progressive Metal packen können. Also seid gespannt…

AN ABSTRACT ILLUSION

Vermutlich würde ich die Band das nächste Mal in die Welt des Progressive Metal setzen. Denn die schwedische Band spielt auf ihrem Album „Woe“ eine Mischung aus Black & Death Metal mit höchst atmosphärischen Verwebungen und passt eigentlich in keine Schublade und es dürfte auch Leute gefallen, die sonst keinen Black Metal hören.

Der technische Anspruch ist immens hoch. Die Leistung von Gitarrist/Bassist Karl Westerlund ist einfach phänomenal und Robert Stenvall gelingt fantastische Soundwelten mit dem Keybord einfließen zu lassen. Wer sich einen Gefallen tun möchte, der sollte das Album von vorne bis hinten einfach ohne Unterbrechung durchhören, um die Atmosphäre in seine Gänze aufzusaugen. Es ist tatsächlich schwer das ganze musikalische Geschehen in Wort zu fassen, denn man würde wegen der Vielzahl an Eindrücken kein Ende finden. Es gibt zwar auch die brutalen Ausbrüche, aber sie sind eben nur ein Teil des gewaltigen Konstrukts.

Eine kleine Kostprobe bietet hier der Song „Slaves“ mit über sieben Minuten Spielzeit, der aber nur erahnen lässt, was sonst noch für epische Monster hier auf den Hörer warten, wobei ich z.B. auf das 14-minütige „In The Heavens Above, You Will Become A Monster“ verweisen möchte.

WHITE WARD

aus der Ukraine verweben musikalische Stoffe, die man so ganz und gar nicht zusammen vereint sehen würde. Ich hätte niemals gedacht, dass man Black Metal mit Jazz verbinden könnte. Aber ich musste mich von WHITE WARD (Facebook) eines besseren belehren lassen, als ich das Album „False Light“ hörte.

Bereits in den ersten Augenblicken des 13-minütigen Openers „Leviathan“ vernahm ich die Klänge eines Saxophons. Wow! Dann gibt es erst einmal feinstem melodischen Black Metal. Plötzlich wird es ganz ruhig und in dieser sphärischen Phase ertönt eine Trompete, die sich hier perfekt einfügt. Aber dies sind nicht die einzigen klassischen Instrumente, die hier ihren Auftritt haben. Ich habe so etwas noch nie gehört und bin fasziniert von dieser Art der musikalischen Darbietung. Einfach traumhaft!

Man kann es sich nicht vorstellen, wenn man es nicht selbst gehört hat. Diese Band ist eine Empfehlung meines Redaktionskollegen Matt und ich möchte an dieser Stelle auf sein Review des Albums verweisen, die noch mehr Details des Albums offenbart. (Review)

KVAEN

KVAEN (Facebook) ist ein Soloprojekt des Musikers Jacob Björnfot. Und auch er ist wieder ein Beweis dafür, dass Soloprojekte durchaus phänomenal sein können. Der Sound von KVAEN lässt sich nicht so einfach beschreiben. Grundsätzlich geht der Sound erbarmungslos zur Sache. Cleane Vocals sind Fehlanzeige. So finden wir uns auf dem Album „The Great Below“ in turbulenten Gewässern und Stromschnellen des Black Metal, Speed Metal und Pagan Metal wieder.

Der Sound klingt brachial und fegt wie eine wildgewordene Bestie über alles und jeden hinweg. Bemerkenswert, dass bei dieser Eskalation die melodische Komponenente tatsächlich nicht vergessen wird. KVAEN gelingt es durch sein musikalisches Fingerspitzengefühl dieser finsteren Erbarmungslosigkeit eine faszinierendes Charisma zu verpassen. Dafür sorgen auch diverse hochkarätige Gastmusiker wie z.B. Jeff Loomis, der beim zweiten Song „The Great Below“ seine Gitarrenmuskeln beim Solo spielen lässt. (Review)

WALG (Facebook) sind Newcomer aus den Niederlanden und liefern eine fantastische Interpretation von Black Metal mit folkloristischen mystischen Einflüssen. Sie verleihen ihrer Musik ganz verschiedene Einflüsse und erschaffen daraus ihre ganz eigene magische Black-Metal-Welt, die Euch mit einem atmosphärischen Strudel in die Tiefe zieht.

Hier sei als Beispiel der Song „Verlossing“ genannt, der zu Beginn mit ungewöhnlichen folkloristische Klängen seine Aufwartung macht. Diese speziellen Kläne stammen von einem traditionellen Instrument „Launeddas“ aus Sardinien und verpassen dem Song einen mystischen Charakter. Dies ist aber nur eine der Verrücktheiten, die sich WALG einfallen lassen. Ansonsten hat der Song im Vergleich zu den anderen Songs epischen Balladencharakter, wenn man im Bereich Black Metal überhaupt von Balladen reden kann.

Allerdings lasst Euch von diesem Ausnahmesong nicht täuschen. Das Album ist insgesamt ein wilder erbarumungsloser Ritt, der Euch durch Gefilde purer Zerstörung führt. Die Vocals gefallen gefallen mir auf dem Album insgesamt sehr gut und bieten Abwechslung. Auf der einen Seite die bösen Growls/Screams in diversen Variationen, die einen gehörigen Touch wilden Wahnsinn verbreiten. Dazu erfolgt im Kontrast das teilweise Einbinden von cleanem Gesang in den Chören, was den epischen Faktor weiter hochschraubt. So bleibt mir nicht mehr zu sagen, als dass WALG für mich mit diesem energiegeladenen Wahnsinnsaufritt so weggeblasen haben, dass es für mich das Black-Metal-Album des Jahres geworden ist. (Review)

AN ABSTRACT ILLUSION

Probably the next time I would put the band in the world of progressive metal. Because the Swedish band plays on their album „Woe“ a mixture of Black & Death Metal with highly atmospheric interweavings and actually fits into no pigeonhole.

The technical standard is immensely high. The performance of guitarist / bassist Karl Westerlund is simply phenomenal and Robert Stenvall manages to let fantastic sound worlds flow in with his keyboard. If you want to do yourself a favor, just listen through the album from front to back without interruption to soak up the atmosphere in its entirety. It is actually difficult to put the whole musical event into a few words, because one would not find an end because of the multitude of impressions. There are also the brutal outbursts, but they are just a part of the huge construct.

A small sample offers here the song „Slaves“ with over seven minutes playing time, but this only gives an idea of what other epic monsters are waiting here for the listener, where I would like to refer, for example, to the 14-minute „In The Heavens Above, You Will Become A Monster„.

WHITE WARD

from Ukraine weave together musical materials that one would not see united together at all. I would never have thought that you could combine black metal with jazz. But I had to be taught better by WHITE WARD (Facebook) when I heard the album „False Light“. I could hardly believe what I was hearing at first.

Already in the first moments of the 13-minute opener „Leviathan“ I heard the sounds of a saxophone. Wow! Then there is first of all finest melodic Black Metal. Suddenly it becomes very quiet and in this spherical phase a trumpet sounds, which fits in perfectly. But these are not the only classical instruments that make their appearance here. I have never heard anything like this before and am fascinated by this kind of musical performance. Simply outstanding!

KVAEN

KVAEN (Facebook) is a solo project by musician Jacob Björnfot. And it is again proof that solo projects can be quite phenomenal. The sound of KVAEN is not so easy to describe. Basically, the sound goes mercilessly to the point. Clean vocals are absent. So we find ourselves on the album „The Great Below“ in wild waters and rapids of Black Metal, Speed Metal and Pagan Metal.

The sound sounds brute and sweeps like a wild beast over everything and everyone. Remarkable that in this escalation the melodic component duck is actually not forgotten. KVAEN succeeds in giving this dark mercilessness a fascinating charisma through his musical intuition. This is also ensured by various top-class guest musicians such as Jeff Loomis, who lets his guitar artistry be heard during the solo on the second song „The Great Below“. (Review)

WALG

WALG (Facebook) are newcomers from the Netherlands and deliver a fantastic interpretation of Black Metal with folkloric mystical influences. They give their music very different influences and create their very own magical black metal world out of it, which pulls you in with an atmospheric vortex.

Here, as an example, the song „Verlossing“ is mentioned, which makes its appearance at the beginning with unusual folkloristic sounds. These come from a traditional instrument „Launeddas“ from Sardinia and give the song a mystical character. But this is only one of the weirdnesses that WALG come up with. Otherwise, the song has compared to the other songs epic ballad character, if you can talk about ballads at all in the field of black metal.

However, do not be deceived by this exceptional song. The album is altogether a wild merciless ride that takes you through realms of pure destruction. The vocals please me on the album overall very well and offer variety. On the one hand, the evil growls / screams in various variations, which spread a proper touch of wild madness. In contrast, the partial integration of clean vocals in the choruses, which further raises the epic factor. So there is nothing more to say than that WALG have blown away for me with this energetic madness performance so that it has become the Black Metal album of the year for me. (Review)

Melodic Black Metal

Ich erwähnte schon häufiger, dass man bei der riesigen Flut von Veröffentlichungen viele Sachen verpasst, leider auch vor allem hochkarätige Alben aus dem Underground, der verdammt stark vertreten ist. Es ist kein Geheimnis, dass die Qualität vieler Bands aus dem Underground wahnsinnig hoch ist und ebenso die Qualität der Produktion erstklassig ist. WALG (Facebook) sind so ein Beispiel dafür.

Und wie es der Zufall will, liege ich während meines Urlaubs am Kalathos Beach von Rhodos und entdecke zufällig die neue Single “ Zielenleed“ von WALG. WALG ist eine junge Band, bestehend aus zwei Männern: Robert Koning und Yorick Keijzer. Sie haben WALG 2021 gegründet und bieten extremen Metal. Ich war sofort Feuer und Flamme und wollte mehr von der Band hören. Aber hier erst einmal die neue Single (nicht auf dem hier rezensierten Album), welche schon die Aussicht auf das nächste Album bietet, das Ende 2022 oder Anfang 2023 erscheinen soll.

Doch nun zu dem aktuellen Album „II“, welches bereits im Februar diesen Jahres veröffentlicht wurde. Was erwartet uns auf diesem Album?

Finstere Ekstase

WALG liefern eine fantastische Interpretation von Black Metal mit folkloristischen mystischen Einflüssen.

Nach einem noch harmlosen Intro, dass die Verstörtheit nur leicht andeutet, feuert der erste Song „Misgeboorte“ gnadenlos mit voller Breitseite drauflos. Mit unbarmherzig feuernden Blastbeatsalven legen WALG alles in Schutt und Asche. Wow! Das nenne ich mal nen beeindruckenden Einstieg. Dazu gesellen sich stimmige Synths und die typischen rasenden melodischen Leads. Das Riffing fräst sich förmlich durch das Gehör. Die fiesen Growls strotzen vor brutaler Energie. Somit bekommt man schon zu Beginn alles, was man sich wünscht.

Hervorragend

setzen WALG das Thema Black Metal um. Und bemerkenswert dabei ist, dass sie ihr eigenes Ding machen, was mittlerweile schwer geworden ist. Man fühlt sich zwar an verschiedene berühmte Bands erinnert, aber hier bekommt man alles vereint. In mir kamen Gedanken an FINNTROLL, DIMMU BORGIR, NIGHT CROWNED und anderen Bands in den Sinn. WALG haben ein tolles Gespür für die Symbiose epischer Melodien mit brachialer Energie. Dazu gesellen sich noch

mystische folkloristische Einflüsse,

die dem Sound eine herausragende Bedeutung bzw. Ausstrahlung verleihen.

„Verlossing“ setzt zu Beginn auf ganz spezielle folkloristische Klänge, die einem Dudelsack ähneln. Dachte ich zumindest. Tatsächlich stammen diese speziellen Kläne aber von einem traditionellen Instrument aus Sardinien, der ‚Launeddas‘. Noch nie gesehen oder gehört, aber wirklich abgefahren. Diese folkischen Klänge begleiten den Song durchweg und bekommen noch mal einen Solopart. Ansonsten hat der Song im Vergleich zu den anderen Songs epischen Balladencharakter, wenn man im Bereich Black Metal überhaupt von Balladen reden kann. WALG lassen es sich aber nicht nehmen einen martialischen Teil einzubauen.

Die Vocals gefallen gefallen mir auf dem Album insgesamt mir sehr gut und bieten Abwechslung. Auf der einen Seite die bösen Growls in diversen Variationen, die manchmal auch einen gehörigen Touch wilden Wahnsinn verbreiten. Dazu erfolgt im Kontrast das Einbinden von cleanem Gesang in den Chören erhöht den epischen Faktor.

Zwischen Zerstörung und Epik

Das musikalische Konzept ist nicht so verrückt wie beispielsweise bei der Band ZORNHEYM, aber trotzdem ist es schon krass und faszinierend, was für Welten hier miteinander verschmelzen. Der Song “ Zondvloed“ steigert sich nach einem ohnehin kraftvollen Beginn in reine Raserei. Da ist Vollalarm angesagt und plötzlich erklingen cleane Gitarren und sakrale Gesänge. Und zum Ende vereinen sich beide Welten zu einem Ganzen.

Den monumentalen Abschluss zelebriert der Song „Terug Naar De Aarde“. Die Einleitung hat wieder etwas geheimnisvolles, bevor die mächtigen Metalangriffe euch zerfetzen. Die Chöre ab Minute 03:30 kommen sehr cool rüber und der Song steuert seinem dramatischen Höhepunkt entgegen.

Fazit

WALG verleihen ihrer Musik ganz verschiedene Einflüsse und erschaffen daraus ihre ganz eigene Black-Metal-Welt. Es ist eine magische Welt mit einem atmosphärischen Strudel, der euch tief in die Geschichten hineinzieht. Und seid ihr erst einmal dort, dann möchtet ihr nicht mehr weg und ihr werdet das Album in Dauerschleife laufen lassen.

Ein stimmungsvolles Album, dass Euch in den Bann ziehen wird. Ich bin froh, wieder einmal ein einzigartiges Album in der großen Flut von Veröffentlichungen gefunden zu haben. Für mich zählt es schon jetzt zu den Topalben 2022 im Bereich Black Metal. Und aus sicherer Quelle weiß ich, dass sie jetzt schon sehr fleißig am nächsten Album arbeiten. Von daher wird es demnächst noch ein Interview geben.

Melodic Black Metal

I’ve often mentioned that with the flood of releases, you miss out on a lot of stuff, unfortunately, unfortunately also mainly high-caliber albums from the underground, which is damn strongly represented. It’s no secret that the quality of many bands from the underground is insanely high and the production quality is also top notch. WALG (Facebook) are such an example of that. WALG is a young band consisting of two men: Robert Koning and Yorick Keijzer. They founded WALG in 2021 and offer extreme metal.

And as chance would have it, I’m lying on the Kalathos Beach of Rhodes during my vacation and accidentally discover the new single “ Zielenleed“ by WALG. I was immediately on fire and wanted to hear more from the band. But here first the new single (not on the album reviewed here), which already offers the prospect of the next album to be released in late 2022 or early 2023.

But now to the current album „II“, which was already released in February this year. What awaits us on this album?

Ekstase

WALG deliver a fantastic interpretation of black metal with folkloric mystical influences.

After a still harmless intro that only slightly hints at the disturbance, the first song „Misgeboorte“ fires mercilessly with a full force. With relentlessly firing blastbeat salvos WALG lay everything in ruins. Wow! That’s what I call an impressive start. In addition, there are matching synths and the typical raging melodic leads. The riffing literally mills through the hearing. The nasty growls are bursting with brutal energy. Thus, you get everything you want right from the start.

how WALG implements the theme of black metal. And what is remarkable is that they do their own thing, which has become difficult in the metal business. You feel reminded of various famous bands, but here you get everything united. In me thoughts of FINNTROLL, DIMMU BORGIR, NIGHT CROWNED and other bands came to mind. WALG have a great feeling for the symbiosis of epic melodies with brute energy. In addition still join

mystical folkloric influences,

which give the sound an outstanding meaning or charisma.

„Verlossing“ relies on very special sounds at the beginning, which resemble bagpipes. At least I thought so. In fact, these special sounds come from a traditional instrument from Sardinia, the ‚Launeddas‘. Never seen or heard before, but really freaky. These folk sounds accompany the song throughout and get another solo part. Otherwise, the song has compared to the other songs epic ballad character, if you can talk about ballads in the field of black metal at all. However, WALG do not miss the opportunity to include a furious part.

The vocals please me on the album overall me very well and offer variety. On the one hand, the evil growls in various variations, which sometimes also spread a proper touch of wild madness. In contrast, the inclusion of clean vocals in the choruses increases the epic factor.

Between destruction and epic

The musical concept is not as crazy as for example the band ZORNHEYM, but still it is already crass and fascinating what worlds merge here. The song „Zondvloed“ increases after an already powerful beginning in pure frenzy. There is full alarm announced and suddenly sound clean guitars and sacred chants. And at the end both worlds unite to a whole.

„Terug Naar De Aarde“ is the monumental final. The introduction has something mysterious again, before the powerful metal attacks shred you. The choruses from minute 03:30 on come across very cool and the song heads towards its dramatic climax.

Conclusion

WALG give their music very different influences and create their very own black metal world from it. It’s a magical world with an atmospheric vortex that pulls you deep into the dark stories. And once you’re there, you won’t want to leave and you’ll have the album on continuous loop.

An atmospheric album that will captivate you. I’m glad to have once again found a unique album in the great flood of releases. For me it is already one of the top albums of 2022 in this genre.
