IOTUNN – „Kinship“ Review

IOTUNN (Facebook) stehen kurz davor euch mit ihr zweites Album „Kinship“ auf die Reise zu schicken. Über eine Stunde Spielzeit verteilt auf 8 Songs versprechen zumindest eine epische Erfahrung, was auch für die Band gilt, die dieses monumentale Werk erschaffen hat. Die Geschichte dreht sich um folgendes:

Das Album spielt in der Urzeit und erzählt die Geschichte eines Stammesangehörigen, der Teil eines prähistorischen Stammes ist. Es erzählt die Geschichte der vielfältigen Bedingungen des Lebens, wobei sich die Themen Einheit/Uneinigkeit, Licht/Dunkelheit, Körper/Geist, Natur/Kultur, Gut/Böse, Schöpfung/Zerstörung und Mensch/Mensch durch das gesamte Album ziehen.

Der Opener „Kinship Elegiac“ der mit 14 Minuten der längste Track auf dem Album. Diese verlangt nach einem Songwriting, dass die Spannung aufrecht erhält. Ich erwarte bei so einem Song einige Wendungen und eine atmosphärische Dichte, die mich an den Song fesselt ohne das ich das Gefühl bekomme, dass ich jetzt vorspulen oder gar vorskippen muss. IOTUNN fallen nicht direkt mit der Tür ins Haus, sondern führen den Hörer zunächst mit sanftem Gesang in das Geschehen ein. So kann man es sicherlich machen und es gefällt mir außerordentlich gut, dass sich der Song nach und nach aufbaut bis zu harten epischen Höhepunkten.

Der Song bleibt auf dem energiereichen Level und auf dem spannenden Weg spielt IOTUNN auch mit extremen Gesängen, wenngleich die cleanen Vocals die Hauptrolle übernehmen. Die Atmosphäre jedenfalls ist intensiv und das Gitarrensolo ab der zehnten Minute macht ebenfalls einen starken Eindruck.

Starke Vocals

Nicht nur gesanglich bieten IOTUNN großes Kino. Neben epischen Ausbrüchen überzeugen IOTUNN mit kraftvollen Stimmen, die auch mal durch die Verwendung von Growls in die extreme Schiene geraten. Unterstützt wird dies mit einer dynamischen athletischen Instrumentierung, die mit ganz viel melodischer Kunst veredelt wird. Dabei geht es dann auch mal richtig deftig zur Sache. Dies kann man wunderbar anhand des Songs „Mistland“ feststellen, der sich in der zweiten Hälfte sich in ein dunkles Monster verwandelt. Die Melodien bleiben allerdings immer ein Teil des Sounds. Mit dem letzten zwei Minuten bekommt der Song noch einmal eine schöne Wendung mit kolossalen Vocals.

Das Thema von „Mistland“ dreht sich darum, Beziehungen zu riskieren, um aus alten Gewohnheiten auszubrechen und neue Ideen und den „Fortschritt“ anzunehmen, auf Gedeih und Verderb. Dies fügt sich in die allgemeine Geschichte und das Konzept des Albums ein, das von alten Völkern handelt, die sich eines Rituals bewusst werden, das sie von ihrer irdischen Form befreien kann und ihnen erlaubt, neue astrale und spirituelle Horizonte zu suchen.

Die leichte Brise im Sturm

auf der spirituellen Reise versprüht ihren Zauber mit „Iridescent Way“. Eine Ballade, die fernab von harschen Tönen zart wie Gänseblümchen auf einer Wiese mit rein akustischen Klängen und auf das Wesentliche reduziert präsentiert wird. Dabei sticht es inmitten der effektvollen monumentalen Songs und dadurch umso mehr hervor. Es ist eine sanfte Brise, welche sich in die Ohren schmeichelt und so zum träumen einlädt. Im Gesamtkontext ist es eine wunderbare Oase der Besinnung.

Gitarrist Jesper Gräs kommentiert zu diesem besonderen Song:

Jens und ich kommen ursprünglich vom klassischen Gitarrenspiel, und das, kombiniert mit der Folk-Tradition im Norden wie auch im Westen an sich, war über die Jahre ein großes Geschenk und eine große Inspiration. Das Intro und das Outro sind mir im Traum eingefallen, und ich bin aufgewacht und habe es gespielt. Es legte den Grundstein für diesen Song, der für die ganze Band etwas ganz Besonderes ist, und wir halten ihn sehr in Ehren.

Der nächste Song lässt es im Anschluss erst einmal ruhig angehen, doch nach der sphärischen Einleitung werden die Träume mit „Earth To Sky“ wie ein Orkan hinweggefegt. Hier wird brutal aus allen Rohren gefeuert. Die Drums gleichen einer Stampede wilder Bisons und erschüttern die Erde. Mit einer unerschütterlichen Energie hält der Song einen hohen kraftvollen Level bis auf eine kleine Sequenz. Dort wird die wilde Hatz für ein feines melodisches Gitarrenintermezzo pausiert.

Ein Mischung aus gefühlvoller Ballade und kerniger Dramaturgie bietet „I Feel The Night“, womit eine sehr dramatische Atmosphäre erzeugt wird. Diese Power-Ballade ist der Wahnsinn. Es ist faszinierend, dass IOTUNN diese kraftvolle überwältigende Epik ohne die Verwendung orchestraler Elemente erschaffen. Das ist eine schwierige Aufgabe, die IOTUNN aber sehr eindrucksvoll meistern. Hierfür sind vor allem die Gitarren und der Gesang verantwortlich, während die Drums und der Bass die viel für die kraftvolle Entfaltung leisten. Alles spielt sich auf einem top Niveau ab.

Fazit

IOTUNN haben mit „Kinship“ eine große Geschichten geschrieben, die den Hörer in gigantische Erlebnisse hineinziehen. Das Album offenbart eine wunderbare Epik, die perfekt inszeniert ist, so dass man voller Faszination die musikalische Geschichte verfolgt. Wenn mich der Fährmann irgendwann einmal an die ewigen Gestade überführt, wäre „Kinship“ der Soundtrack, den ich dabei wählen würde. Auf jeden Fall einer der Höhepunkte in diesem Jahr. Ein extrem beeindruckendes Album!

IOTUNN (Facebook) are about to send you on a journey with their second album “Kinship”. Over an hour of playing time spread over 8 songs promises an epic experience for the listener, but also applies to the band that created this monumental work. The story revolves around the following:

The album is set in prehistoric times and tells the story of a tribesman who is part of a prehistoric tribe. It tells the story of the diverse conditions of life, with the themes of unity/disunity, light/darkness, body/mind, nature/culture, good/evil, creation/destruction and man/human running through the entire album.

The opener “Kinship Elegiac” is the longest track on the album at 14 minutes. This calls for songwriting that maintains the tension. I expect a song like this to have a few twists and turns and an atmospheric density that keeps me hooked on the song without me feeling like I have to fast-forward or even skip ahead. IOTUNN don’t come in with a bang, but introduce the listener to the action with gentle vocals. You can certainly do it that way and I really like the fact that the song gradually builds up to hard epic climaxes.

The song stays on the energetic level and on the exciting track IOTUNN also plays with extreme vocals, even though the clean vocals take the main role. At times I feel reminded of the band BORKNAGAR, which is a good thing. In any case, the atmosphere is intense and the guitar solo from the tenth minute onwards also makes a strong impression.

Strong vocals

IOTUNN offer great cinema not only vocally. In addition to epic outbursts, IOTUNN convince with powerful vocals, which sometimes go to extremes by using growls. This is supported by dynamic, athletic instrumentation that is refined with a great deal of melodic artistry. Sometimes things get really heavy. This can be seen wonderfully in the song “Mistland”, which turns into a dark monster in the second half. However, the melodies always remain part of the sound. With the last two minutes, the song takes another beautiful turn with colossal vocals.

The theme of “Mistland” revolves around risking relationships to break out of old habits and embrace new ideas and “progress”, for better or worse. This ties into the overall story and concept of the album, which is about ancient peoples becoming aware of a ritual that can free them from their earthly form and allow them to seek new astral and spiritual horizons.

The light breeze in the storm

on the spiritual journey reveals its magic with ‘Iridescent Way’. A ballad that, far removed from harsh tones, is presented as delicate as daisies on a meadow with purely acoustic sounds and reduced to the essentials. It stands out all the more amidst the impressive monumental songs. It is a gentle breeze that caresses the ears and invites you to dream. In the overall context, it is a wonderful oasis of contemplation.

Jens and I have origins in playing classical guitar and this, combined with the folk tradition in the North as well as in the West as such, has been a huge gift and inspiration throughout the years. The intro and outro part came to me in a dream, and I woke up and played it. It laid a foundation for this song which is very special to the whole band, and we hold it very dearly.

The next song “Earth To Sky” takes it easy at first, but after the spherical introduction, the dreams are swept away like a hurricane. Here, they fire brutally from all guns. The drums resemble a stampede of wild bison and shake the earth. With an unshakeable energy, the song maintains a high, powerful level except for a short sequence. There the wild chase is paused for a fine melodic guitar intermezzo.

‘I Feel The Night’ offers a mixture of soulful balladry and pithy dramaturgy, creating a very dramatic atmosphere. This power ballad is insane. It’s fascinating that IOTUNN create this powerful, overwhelming epic without the use of orchestral elements. This is a difficult task, but IOTUNN master it very impressively. The guitars and vocals are mainly responsible for this, while the drums and bass do a lot for the powerful unfolding. Everything happens at a top level.

Conclusion

With „Kinship“, IOTUNN have written great stories that draws the listener into gigantic experiences and holds them captive. The album reveals a wonderful epicness that is perfectly realised. If the ferryman ever takes me to the eternal shores, „Kinship“ would be the soundtrack I would choose. Definitely one of the highlights this year. An extremely impressive album!

Everything is related, and everything has an impact, and we all must find our ways to our true selves and true freedoms in our choices in this interconnectedness of everything. The album explores themes of conformity versus following your own path and the consequences your choices have for relationships. It is also a consideration of the mind-body connection; especially with regards to how you interact within yourself, how you are influenced and controlled by the arenas of life and the interaction with nature. All this influences your identity, your choices, and your individuality.
