Zombeast – Jared im Interview

Just a few months ago Zombeast released their second album „Heart Of Darkness“ (click here for our review)and played their first shows ever in Germany. Unfortunately we missed them, but Jared (guitars) was so kind to answer some questions. And for all who missed Zombeast this time too. We are lucky, they will be back soon in Germany. And now first have fun with the video to „Red Ripper“ and then with the interview.

Zombeast – Jared explains the 20 year hiatus

metal-heads (MH): Hello Jared and thanks for taking the time. Your new album „Heart Of Darkness“ is out now for about two months and we really liked it. It is nearly 20 years since your first and self-titled  album. So what happened in between and what can you tell us about the band?

Jared: We all kinda just got caught up in the day to day grind of life. Some of us also lived two hours apart. We played with the idea in 2014 of doing Zombeast again and as soon as we were open to it, things got in the way. The initial plan with this reunion was a 3 song EP and a final show. Then Mario kept asking for more songs to write to, and here we are. It took longer than we wanted for „Heart Of Darkness“ to come out, but that’s largely due to the pandemic. 

MH: „Heart Of Darkness“ got some great reviews  and many mentioned Danzig as an influence and of course Mario really reminds of him. But with the way of the storytelling I also see King Diamond / Mercyful Fate as an influence. Am I right in that interpretation or can you tell me more about your influences?

Jared: Mario and myself are definitely MF/King Diamond fans. As for how much that influences Mario’s writing, I don’t really know. I suppose subconsciously everything we love musically influences something. That said, Mercyful Fate played a big influence on our song „Night Demon„. I’ve always dug how MF wasn’t afraid to use melodic riffs, even if it’s next to one of the heaviest riffs you’ve ever heard. But our influences are pretty typical. It can vary from Samhain to Slayer. I have a bit more of a post punk/goth taste whereas Mario digs The Animals, The Doors, and other older bands.

Zombeast and their connection to Fiend Force Records

MH: „Heart Of Darkness“ is released by Massacre Records, but licensed by Fiend Force Records, the label owned by Rod Usher (singer of The Other). How did you get together?

Jared: Much to my surprise Rod was a pretty big fan of the first Zombeast album. So during recording of „Heart Of Darkness“, he expressed interest. Once we finished the video for „Red Ripper“ we sent it over to him and I think his response was that it gave him chills or something along those lines. He then sent it over to Flo V Schwarz, and from there we started having web meetings. We really liked what they had to say, and organically it really kinda just flowed from there.

Jared about playing with Zombeast in Germany

MH: Recently you played some shows in Germany, starting in Cologne at the Valhalla Metal Pub. When I’m right those were your first shows ever in Germany or Europe. How was the experience for you and did you feel welcome?

Jared: Germany ruled straight up. It’s pretty insane to go to a country you’ve never been before and play to a crowd that knows your songs. Valhalla was more of a smaller intimate warm up show but it was full of people familiar with Zombeast. The next night was WGT in Leipzig and we played to massive crowd of 1500ish people. Not as many knew Zombeast – but it was an amazing experience and we made a lot of new friends that weekend. Seriously, we didn’t want to come home. Shout out to We’rewolf and The Die Die Darlings for all the help/back line.

MH: Are there differences in between playing here and in the US, aside from the shorter distances?

Jared: From our impression it seems that Europe, or at least Germany are a bit more appreciative of live music. The venues, the crowds, they’re so respectful. Everyone’s really invested in making the live show a success. There’s many great venues and clubs in the US but some of the crowds in the US could learn a thing or two. 

MH: For those who missed you in May, there are three upcoming shows around Halloween this year at the Hell Nights 2024. Do you have anything special planned?

Jared: We’re so stoked for these shows. We’re still new to the people of Germany, so the goal right now is to have a fun and diverse setlist. 

 MH: What are your plans for the future besides from this? We’re looking forward to hearing more from you.

Jared: I’m starting the process of working on new material at the moment. Most of „Heart Of Darkness“ was written with Mario and myself. This current line up of Zombeast are absolute monsters, so I look forward to writing new songs from the ground up with these guys.

Leider haben wir sie da verpasst, aber Jared (Gitarre) war so freundlich uns einige Fragen zu beantworten. Und für alle die Zombeast auch verpasst haben, wir haben alle Glück. Bald spielen sie wieder hier in Deutschland. Und jetzt erst einmal viel Spaß mit dem Video zu „Red Ripper“ und dann mit dem Interview.

Zombeast – Jared erklärt die 20jährige Pause

metal-heads (MH): Hallo Jared und vielen Dank, dass du dir die Zeit nimmst. Euer neues Album „Heart Of Darkness“ ist nun etwa für zwei Monate draußen und hat bei uns großen Anklang gefunden. Aber seit eurem selbstbetiteltem Debüt sind nun fast zwanzig Jahre vergangen. Was ist in der Zwischenzeit geschehen und was kannst du uns über Zombeast erzählen?

Jared: Wir waren einfach im täglichen Trott gefangen und zum Teil leben wir zwei Stunden voneinander entfernt. 2014 spielten wir mit dem Gedanken wieder mit Zombeast anzufangen und sobald wir offen für die Idee waren, nahmen die Dinge ihren Lauf. Der ursprüngliche Plan mit dieser Reunion war eine3 Song EP und eine finale Show. Aber dann wollte Mario mehr Songs schreiben und hier sind wir nun. Es hat länger gedauert als wir wollten bis „Heart Of Darkness“ erschien. Aber das war hauptsächlich der Pandemie geschuldet.

MH: „Heart Of Darkness“ hat einige großartige Reviews bekommen und viele haben Danzig als Einfluss ausgemacht und Mario erinnert auch an ihn. Aber mit der Art und Weise wie ihr Geschichten erzählt, sehr ich auch King Diamond / Mercyful Fate als Einfluss. Liege ich damit richtig oder kannst du mir mehr über eure Einflüsse erzählen?

Jared: Mario und ich sind definitiv Mercyful Fate / King Diamond Fans. Inwieweit das Marios Songwriting beeinflust, kann ich nicht sagen. Ich denke, das unterbewusst alles was wir lieben uns musikalisch beeinflusst. Und ja, Mercyful Fate hatten einen großen Einfluss auf unseren Song „Night Demon“. Ich habe schon immer geliebt, dass Mercyful Fate sich nie gescheut haben ein melodisches Riff direkt einem der härtesten Riffs, die du je gehört hast, gegenüberzustellen. Aber unsere Einflüsse sind ziemlich typisch. Das kann von Samhain zu Slayer variieren. Ich komme mehr aus der Post Punk / Goth Ecke, während Mario auf The Animals, The Doors und andere, ältere Bands abfährt.

Zombeast und die Verbindung zu Fiend Force Records

MH: „Heart Of Darkness“ Massacre Records ist bei erschienen unter der Lizenz von Fiend Force Records, dem Label, welches Rod Usher (Sänger bei The Other) gehört. Wie seid ihr zusammengekommen?

Jared: Sehr zu meiner Überraschung ist Rod ein großer Fan des ersten Zombeast Albums. Daher hat er während der Aufnahmen zu „Heart Of Darkness“ sein Interesse bekundet. Und als wir das Video zu „Red Ripper“ fertig hatten, haben wir es ihm geschickt und ich glaube seine Antwort war, dass er Gänsehaut oder so bekommen hat. Er hat es dann an Flo V Schwarz weitergeleitet und von da an hatten wir dann web meetings. Wir mochten sehr, was sie zu sagen hatten und von da an ging es ganz natürlich und automatisch weiter.

Jared erzählt wie es war mit Zombeast in Deutschland zu spielen

MH: Kürzlich habt ihr einige Shows in Deutschland gespielt. Angefangen mit dem Valhalla Metal Pub in Köln. Wenn ich richtig liege waren das eure ersten Shows überhaupt in Deutschland oder Europa. Wie war es für euch und habt ihr euch willkommen gefühlt?

Jared: Deutschland war der Hammer. Es ist schon der ziemliche Wahnsinn in ein Land zu kommen, wo du nie vorher warst und dann dort zu spielen und die Leute kennen deine Songs. Im Valhalla war es mehr eine kleine, intime Warm Up Show, aber so viele Leute kannten uns schon. In der nächsten Nacht haben wir dann auf dem WGT in Leipzig vor einer großen Menge von etwa 1500 Leuten gespielt. Da kannten uns nicht so viele, aber es war eine atemberaubende Erfahrung und wir haben an dem Wochenende viele neue Freunde gefunden. Ernsthaft, wir wollten gar nicht zurück nach Hause. Shout Out auch zu We’rewolf und The Die Die Darlings für all die Hilfe / Backline.

MH: Gibt es große Unterschiede zwischen den Shows hier und in den USA? Abgesehen davon, dass die Entfernungen viel kürzer sind.

Jared: Wir haben den Eindruck gewonnen, dass die Leute in Europa oder zumindest in Deutschland Live Musik mehr zu schätzen wissen. Die Clubs, die Besuche, sie alle sind so respektvoll. Jeder bringt sich ein um die Show zu einem Erfolg und einem Erlebnis zu machen. Es gibt viele tolle Hallen und Clubs in den USA, aber einige der Besucher dort könnten ein oder zwei Dinge lernen.

MH: Für alle die euch im Mai verpasst haben. Um Halloween herum spielt ihr drei Shows bei den Hell Nights 2024. Habt ihr da was Besonderes geplant?

Jared: Wir freuen uns so auf diese Shows. Wir sind immer noch Neuland für die Leute in Deutschland und so ist das Ziel einfach Spaß zu haben und die Setlist zu variieren.

 MH: Was sind davon abgesehen eure Pläne für die Zukunft? Wir können es kaum erwarten mehr von euch zu hören.

Jared: Jetzt gerade habe ich schon angefangen neues Material zu schreiben. Der größte Teil von „Heart Of Darkness“ wurde von Mario und mir geschrieben. Das derzeitige Line-Up von Zombeast ist der absolute Killer. Daher kann ich es gar nicht erwarten zusammen mit den Jungs neue Songs zu erschaffen.
