ANCIENT BARDS (Facebook) haben lange nichts von sich hören lassen. Das letzte Album „Origine“ liegt bereits sechs Jahre zurück, welches den Start des neuen Teils der The Black Crystal Sword Sage markierte. Nun sind die Symphonic Metaller aus Italien wieder am Start, mit ihrem neuen Album „Artifex“.

Wie es sich für Symphonic Metaller gehört, beginnt man die Story mit einer opulenten orchestralen Einleitung, bis schließlich der Opener „My Prima Nox“ aus den Boxen schallt. Der Sound klingt satt und druckvoll. In den ersten Momenten fühle ich mich an NIGHTWISH aus den früheren Jahren erinnert. Epische Chöre schwimmen in einer monströsen Soundwelle mit, die einen schwungvoll mitreißt. Männliche Growls werden ebenfalls eingestreut, aber nur so minimal, so dass es für mich im Gesamtkonzept etwas deplatziert wirkt. Das hätte man ruhig etwas weiter ausschmücken können, um dem kitschigen Touch einen stärkeren Gegenpart zu geben. Nichtsdestotrotz haben ANCIENT BARDS mit diesem Song schon mal einen fulminanten Einstieg geschafft.

Beim folgenden „The Vessel“ ändert man ein wenig das Konzept. Zunächst einmal wird die Aggressivität zurückgefahren und man startet balladesk. Dann bringt sich ein kraftvoller männlicher Chor ein, was ich ganz gelungen finde und dem harmlosen Song ein wenig mehr Würze verleiht. Die Chöre kommen auf dem Album sehr gut zur Geltung und klingen wirklich gut. Im Nachhinein habe ich gelesen, dass ein 42-köpfiger Chor für diese imposanten Momente verantwortlich ist.

Mir gefallen die Songs besser, wenn es härter zur Sache geht. Da gelingt es den Barden besser die Klippen des Kitsch zu umfahren. Hatte ich eingangs den restriktiven Einsatz der Growls beim Opener noch kritisiert, so begeht man diesen Fehler beim Song „The Empire Of Black Death“ nicht. ANCIENT BARDS legen die Rüstung an und greifen zu den Waffen. Sie setzen die Growls häufiger ein, was dem gesamten Soundbild meiner Meinung nach sehr zu Gute kommt. Dies ist ein Song voll nach meinem Geschmack und ich bin neugierig, ob es ANCIENT BARDS weiterhin gelingt ihrem bisher von harmonischen Momenten geprägten Symphonic Metal ein wenig mehr harten Schliff mit Ecken und Kanten zu verpassen.

Leider hält der Angriff nicht lange an, denn anschließend kehrt Frieden ein und es folgen mit „Unending“ und „Ministers Of Light“ und „Proximity“ drei Balladen. Für mich ist es nicht nachvollziehbar, warum nach dem harten aufputschenden Kick „The Empire Strikes Black“ das musikalische Geschehen so dermaßen ausbremst und 15 Minuten von Balladen umschmeichelt wird. So schwindet bei mir die Hoffnung, dass ANCIENT BARDS das Ruder noch mal rumreißen, um in härte Gewässer zu schippern.

Erst mit „Soulbound Symphony“ kommen ANCIENT BARDS wieder stürmischer daher. Hier überrascht man zu Beginn sogar mit folkoristischen Streicherklängen, die schöne Akzente setzen, aber leider nicht noch einmal im Song derart aufgegriffen werden. Gefällt mir gleich wieder besser. Tolle Basslinien und feurige Flitzefinger-Soli machen ebenfalls was her.

Fazit

Es fällt mir schwer das neue Album „Artifex“ zu bewerten. Einerseits bekommt man über eine Stunde hochwertige Musik geboten, aber andererseits ist mir der Anteil an Balladen und vornehmlich harmonischen Eskapaden zu hoch. ANCIENT BARDS bleiben ihrem Stil jedenfalls treu, loten ein wenig mehr ihre Grenzen aus, bleiben dabei aber meiner Meinung nach hinter ihren Möglichkeiten und in an sich vielversprechenden Ansätzen stecken.

Man könnte viele Wege beschreiten, um der Kreativität in unterschiedlicher Form freien Lauf zu lassen, aber das gelingt meines Erachtens nur im Ansatz und ich verstehe nicht, warum so ein megastarker Song wie „The Empire Of Black Death“ in seiner konsequenten Ausrichtung die absolute Ausnahme auf dem Album bleibt. Auch kreative Ansätze wie die folkloristischen Streicher abseits der bombastischen orchestralen Elemente beim Song „Soulbound Symphony“ wird nicht weiter verfolgt. So verpassen ANCIENT BARDS die Chance in ihren Geschichten mehr spannende Twists einzubauen.

Ungeachtet meines persönlichen Geschmacks sind die Songs jedoch von guter Qualität, so dass ich gute 8 Punkte vergebe. Fans von Symphonic Metal, die es mögen in weniger stürmischen Gefilden unterwegs zu sein und sich an einer Fülle harmonischer Melodien erfreuen können, würden wahrscheinlich noch mal einen Punkt mehr vergeben.

ANCIENT BARDS (Facebook) have not been heard from for a long time. The last album „Origine“ was released six years ago, which marks the start of the new part of The Black Crystal Sword saga. Now the symphonic metallers from Italy are back at it again with their new album „Artifex“.

The story begins with an opulent orchestral introduction until the opener „My Prima Nox“ finally blasts out of the speakers. The sound is rich and powerful. In the first few moments, I feel reminded of NIGHTWISH from earlier years. Epic choirs swim along in a monstrous wave of sound that sweeps you along. Male growls are also interspersed, but only so minimally that they seem a little out of place in the overall concept. This could have been embellished a little more to give the kitschy touch a stronger counterpart. Nevertheless, ANCIENT BARDS have made a brilliant start with this song.

The following „The Vessel“ changes the concept a little. First of all, the aggression is reduced and the song starts off ballad-like. Then a powerful male choir joins in, which I find quite successful and gives the harmless song a little more spice. The choirs really come into their own on the album and sound really good. I read afterwards that a 42-strong choir is responsible for these impressive moments.

I like the songs better when they get down to business. The bards are better at avoiding the pitfalls of kitsch. While I criticized the restrictive use of growls on the opener at the beginning, they change it on „The Empire Of Black Death“. ANCIENT BARDS put on their armor and take up arms. They use growls more often, which in my opinion benefits the overall sound. This is a song to my taste and I’m curious to see whether ANCIENT BARDS can continue to give their symphonic metal, which has been characterized by harmonious moments so far, a little more hard edge with rough edges.

Unfortunately, the attack doesn’t last long, because calmer songs returns and three ballads follow with „Unending“, „Ministers Of Light“ and „Proximity“. I can’t understand why, after the hard, uplifting kick of „The Empire Strikes Black“, the musical storm slows down so much and is flattered by ballads for 15 minutes. So my hope that ANCIENT BARDS will turn the tide and sail into harder waters is fading.

Only with „Soulbound Symphony“ do ANCIENT BARDS come across more stormy again. At the beginning, they even surprise us with folkoristic string sounds, which set nice accents, but unfortunately are not taken up again in the song. I immediately like it better again. Great bass lines and fiery flash finger solos also make a difference.

Conclusion

I find it somewhat difficult to rate the new album „Artifex“. On the one hand, you get over an hour of high-quality music, but on the other hand, the proportion of ballads and mainly harmonic escapades is too high for me. In any case, ANCIENT BARDS remain true to their style, explore their limits a little more, but in my opinion fall short of their potential and get stuck in promising approaches.

There are many ways to give free rein to creativity in different forms, but this is only partially successful and I don’t understand why a mega-strong song like „The Empire Of Black Death“ remains the exception on the album. Even creative approaches such as the folkloristic strings away from the bombastic orchestral elements in the song „Soulbound Symphony“ are not pursued any further. ANCIENT BARDS thus miss the chance to incorporate more exciting twists into their stories.

Regardless of my personal taste, however, the songs are of good quality, so I give them a good 8 points. Fans of symphonic metal who like to be in less stormy climes and can enjoy an abundance of harmonious melodies would probably award one more point.
