IMPERIA – „Dark Paradise“ Review

IMPERIA (Facebook) sind eine beständige Größe im Symphonic Metal. Ihr Sound war auf den ersten Alben nicht ganz so hart und mehr im Bereich leichteren melodischen Metals einzuordnen, auch wenn später so ein Song wie „The Vikingsong“ (Album „Tears Of Silence“) ausnahmsweise in härtere Fahrwasser schipperte. Auf dem Album „Flames Of Eternity“ waren dann viele Songs mit deutlich mehr Metal geimpft und trumpften mit mehr Bombast auf. „The Last Horizon“ ging die Sache dann überraschenderweise wieder etwas ruhiger an und die Gitarren waren deutlich weniger präsent, um die symphonischen Keys mehr in den Vordergrund zu rücken. Sängerin Helena ist wundervoll und garniert den Sound mit ihrer klangvollen Stimme, die sich im Laufe der Zeit immer mehr entwickelte und neue Facetten offenbarte.

„Dark Paradise“ setzt neue Maßstäbe!

Das möchte ich mal direkt zu Beginn loswerden. Die erste Single „Better Places“ hatte mich auf Anhieb vollkommen überzeugt. Der Sound ist wuchtig und bombastisch. Die Gitarren sind wieder deutlich angriffslustiger, wobei auch die Solos an Häufigkeit und Qualität zugelegt haben. Darüber hinaus scheint Helena trotz ihrer bisherigen gewohnt einwandfreien Leistung noch weiter an ihrer Performance gearbeitet zu haben, denn die Vocals klingen so vielseitig wie nie zuvor. Das gilt auch für die Ausgestaltung der einzelnen Songs, in denen unheimlich viel passiert und sehr aufwendig arrangiert sind. Überzeugt euch doch einfach selber und schaut euch das Video zu „Better Place“ an.

Härter, aber nicht weniger melodisch

treten die Songs auf. Extreme Vocals sind kein häufig genutztes Elemente bei IMPERIA, aber sie kommen hier und da mal vor. So greift man z.B. beim Song „Reach My Tears“ auch auf Growls zurück, was man bei der eher balladesken ersten Hälfte gar nicht erwarten würde. Doch der Song imponiert in der zweiten Hälfte mit einer bitterbösen Death Metal Injektion.

Die dunkle Seite von IMPERIA kommt zwar auf dem neuen Album häufiger zum Vorschein, aber es bleibt trotzdem die Ausnahme. Macht sich meiner Meinung nach aber sehr gut im Sound und ich könnte mir persönlich mehr davon vorstellen. (Tatsächlich bekomme ich das auch später geliefert.) Helena hat eine unglaubliche stimmliche Range und macht einen hervorragenden Job. Sie gehört für mich in die Topliga der Metal Sängerinnen.

IMPERIA bedienen sich auch immer wieder folkloristischer Elemente, wie ihr bei „Reach My Tears“ gerade hören konntet. Auch beim Song „The Family Chain“ erklingen solche Töne. „Tree Of Life“ ist wieder einmal ein getragener Song mit epischen Ausmaßen. Was ich begrüße, sind die speziellen Effekte, wie z.B. die Synhties beim Song „Reflection“ oder die orientalischen Klänge beim Song „Soldiers Of Hell“.

Das dunkle Biest

„Soldiers Of Hell“ überrascht zudem mit einem hohen Anteil von bitterbösen Growls. Das passt super und damit ist dieser Song wohl der dunkelste und härteste, was IMPERIA bisher gespielt haben. Das orientalisch angehauchte Gitarrensolo fängt die Stimmung des Songs ebenfalls super ein. Für mich ist dieser Song ein echtes Highlight! Und es ist das ein Schritt in der Entwicklung, der die Vielseitigkeit und Möglichkeiten der Band eindrucksvoll aufzeigt. Diese Band kann die gesamte Palette des symphonischen Metals bieten, von zarten lichtvollen Erscheinungen bis hin zu dunklen Abgründen. Dieser Song beweist unumstritten, dass die dunkle Seite von IMPERIA ebenfalls fantastisch klingt und ich bleibe dabei: Mehr davon bitte!

Weitere Überraschungen lassen nicht lange auf sich warten! Bei „Void Of Emptiness“ zeigt Helena eine krasse Palette ihrer Sangeskünste, die man als sehr außergewöhnlich bezeichnen kann. Jedenfalls sind das die Charakteristika, welche die Songs unterscheidbar machen, für Aufsehen sorgen und im Gedächtnis bleiben. Von dunkelsten Tiefen bis hin zu himmlischen Höhen geht ihre Stimme auf Reise. Das ist sehr beeindruckend und schenkt dem Sound natürlich Varianz. So etwas prägt sich ein! Allerdings muss ich zugeben, wenn ich mir die ausufernde Ballade „Lost Souls“ anhöre, dass mir persönlich manche Ausflüge in die allerhöchsten Klanggipfel einen Tick zu weit gehen. Da wäre für mich weniger mehr gewesen. Dagegen gefällt mir das Duett von Helena und Gastmusiker Oliver (der auch einige Gitarren beisteuert) sehr gut und hätte ruhig ausführlicher stattfinden können. Im direkten Vergleich sagt mir die finale Ballade „The Demons‘ Fire Place“ sogar noch mehr zu, obwohl sie erheblich zurückhaltender gestaltet ist, ganz ohne Gitarren und Drums, lediglich Piano und orchestrale Synths begleiten den vortrefflichen Gesang.

Fazit

Die musikalischen Möglichkeiten von IMPERIA scheinen grenzenlos zu sein. Auf ihrem neuen Album „Dark Paradise“ schenken sie uns eine großartige Bandbreite ihrer Kunst. Die Reise geht von tiefen dunklen Abgründen, über epische Landschaften bis hin zu den höchsten lichtvollen Gipfeln. IMPERIA können dabei durchweg völlig überzeugen und mit vielen außergewöhnlichen Highlights begeistern.

IMPERIA (Facebook) are a constant force in symphonic metal. On their first albums, their sound was not quite as heavy and more in the lighter melodic metal range, even if a song like „The Vikingsong“ (Album „Tears Of Silence“) occasionally sailed into heavier waters. On the album „Flames Of Eternity“, many songs were much more metal-infused and boasted more bombast. Surprisingly, „The Last Horizon“ took a calmer approach and the guitars were much less present, allowing the symphonic keys to take center stage. Singer Helena is wonderful and garnishes the sound with her melodious voice, which also likes to reveal operatic sounds.

„Dark Paradise“ sets new musical heights!

The first single „Better Places“ won me over straight away. The sound is powerful and bombastic. The guitars are more present and sound heavy, and the solos have also increased in frequency and quality. In addition, Helena seems to have continued to work on her performance despite her usual flawless performance, because the vocals sound more versatile than ever before. This also applies to the arrangement of the individual songs, in which an incredible amount happens and which are very elaborately arranged. See for yourself and watch the video for „Better Place“.

Tougher, but no less melodic

the songs appear. Extreme vocals are not a frequently used element in IMPERIA, but they do appear here and there. For example, growls are used on the song „Reach My Tears“, which you wouldn’t expect from the rather ballad-like first half. But the song impresses in the second half with a bitterly evil death metal injection.

The dark side of IMPERIA does come to the fore more often on the new album, but it still remains the exception. In my opinion, however, it works very well in the sound and I could personally imagine more of it. (In fact, I get exactly that later with another song.) Helena has an incredible vocal range and does an excellent job. For me, she belongs in the top league of female metal singers.

IMPERIA also make use of folkloristic elements time and again, as you could just hear on „Reach My Tears“. Such sounds can also be heard in the song „The Family Chain“. „Tree Of Life“ is once again a solemn song of epic proportions. What I welcome are the special effects, such as the synthesizers in the song „Reflection“ or the oriental sounds in the song „Soldiers Of Hell“.

The dark beast „Soldiers Of Hell“

surprises with a high proportion of sinister growls. This fits perfectly and makes this song probably the darkest and heaviest that IMPERIA have played so far. The oriental-influenced guitar solo also captures the mood of the song perfectly. For me, this song is a real highlight! And it’s a step in the band’s development that impressively demonstrates their versatility and possibilities. This band can offer the whole palette of symphonic metal, from delicate light appearances to dark abysses. This song proves indisputably that the dark side of IMPERIA also sounds fantastic and I stick to my guns: More of this please!

More surprises are not long in coming! On „Void Of Emptiness“, Helena displays a blatant range of her vocal skills that can be described as very unusual. In any case, these are the characteristics that make the songs stand out, cause a stir and stay in your thoughts. Her voice travels from the darkest depths to heavenly heights. This is very impressive and of course adds variance to the sound. Something like that is memorable! However, when I listen to the sprawling ballad „Lost Souls“, I have to admit that some of the excursions into the very highest peaks go a little too far for me personally. For me, On the other hand, I really like the duet between Helena and guest musician Oliver (who also contributes some guitars) and this could have been more extensive. In direct comparison, the final ballad „The Demons‘ Fire Place“ appeals to me more, although it is much more restrained, without any guitars or drums, only piano and orchestral synths accompany the excellent vocals.

Conclusion

The musical possibilities of IMPERIA seem to be limitless. On their new album „Dark Paradise“, they present us with a magnificent range of their art. The journey takes us from deep dark abysses to epic landscapes and the highest light-filled peaks. IMPERIA are completely convincing throughout and inspire with many extraordinary highlights.
