MAVERICK (Facebook) from Ireland let it rip on their album „Silver Tongue“ with classic hard rock. The cover artwork, which is very old school in the style of the 70s, also fits in with this.
However, the production of the album is anything but old school. The sound booms out of the speakers with a rich and crisp sound. The fat opener „Puppet Show“ opens the whole spectacle very effectively with its blatant bass. I love strong bass. It always scores points with me and I’m glad that the bass is very present throughout the album, even if it doesn’t play such a leading role like on „Puppet Show“, where the band alternates between the laid-back bass-driven parts and a crashing chorus, which makes it all the more effective. A very successful introduction to the album and a real hit for me!
„Sweet Surrender“ picks up the tempo and starts with a cool riff. Overall, it remains a melodic rock song with a catchy chorus. Things get a little sharper with „Daywalker“. A great mid-tempo cracker with a great groove that lets the shreds fly with a nice dirty edge. The energetic voice of singer David Balfour is thrilling and electrifies the listener. And when the guitars provide additional tension, the body has no choice but to shake ecstatically. A real cracker!
This also applies to other songs on the album in a similar way. These include the flying „Halfway To Heaven“, the resolutely driving „Cheyenne“ and the briskly marching „Bloody Mary“. Incidentally, it also sounds great when the other band members join in the polyphonic choirs. The choruses come across so sonorously that you immediately want to sing along. Also worth mentioning are the first-class guitar solos, which are always a pleasure to listen to. Convince yourself of the band’s captivating quality.
MAVERICK value melodic song concepts that are easy on the ear. This has its charm and brings such wonderful ballads as „Lorelei“ to light, where singer David and the band demonstrate their excellent vocal qualities. In between, it even gets a bit pithier so that it doesn’t become too monotonous. For me, it’s a perfect ballad.
The power ballads „Time“ and the final track „We All Die Young“ are similar, with the latter’s invigorating guitar solos at the end, as on the whole album, creating a real excitement.
Conclusion
With „Silver Tongue“, MAVERICK have achieved a brilliant achievement. In addition to really cool, rousing melodic rock songs, MARVERICK can also shine with some sweet little gems in the form of sensitive yet powerful ballads. For me, it could have sounded a bit sharper and dirtier here and there, like in the song „Daywalker“, but even so, the songs are really great hits and wonderful to listen to. So a strong recommendation for the album „Silver Tongue“ by MAVERICK.
