Man muss auch mal Glück haben. Denn fast wäre mir das geile Album „V“ von MINDWARS (Facebook) entgangen. Die Band hatte das Album nämlich bereits 2024 in Eigenregie veröffentlicht und davon habe ich leider nix bekommen. Von daher bin ich sehr froh darüber, dass das Album nun noch einmal mehr Aufmerksamkeit bekommt, da es vom Label High Roller Records offiziell veröffentlicht wird.

Wer sind MINDWARS?

Das im Jahr 2013 gegründete Trio besteht aus Mike Alvord, dem Gitarristen und Mitbegründer der legendären Band ‚Holy Terror‘, dem italienischen Schlagzeuger Roby Vitari und Bassist Rick Zaccaro, die sich dem klassischen Thrash Metal hingeben und diesen überaus eindrucksvoll interpretieren. Der Bandname MINDWARS orientiert sich natürlich am zweiten Holy-Terror-Album „Mind Wars“ (1988), doch das Projekt stellt für den Gitarristen ein neues Kapitel dar.

Wild und düster

geht es zur Sache. Der ganze Sound hat ein rohe ungeschliffene Oberfläche und besitzt mit einer äußerst lebendigen Gitarrenarbeit eine sehr lebendige Ausstrahlung. Die Songs habe eine starke Dynamik und glänzen mit allerlei Rhtyhmus- bzw. Tempovariationen. Oft gibt es langsamere doomige Passagen und plötzlich bricht die Hölle los, wenn das Feuer entfacht wird. So habe ich das beispielsweise bei der Single „Beneath The Trees“ empfunden. Der Song offenbart zu Beginn eine etwas unheimliche Atmosphäre, lässt aber auch schon mal vehemente Riffangriffe los. Ab Minute 02:30 h wandelt sich das Ganze in eine wild noch vorn preschende Speedrakete.

Obwohl ich es eigentlich nicht so mit Instrumentaltracks habe, so holt mich „The Road To Madagascar“ völlig ab. Wahnsinn, was das Trio hier abfeuert. Es ist hart, schnell und melodisch. Eine kurzweilige Vorstellung mit hohem Unterhaltungswert. Der Hintergrund ist allerdings dystopischer Natur, denn die Idee zu dem Track kam mit dem Besuch einer Ausstellung, die sich mit dem Holocaust beschäftigte.

Das MINDWARS die Melodien nicht außen vor lassen, zeigen unter anderem die schönen Gitarrenakkorde beim Song „Chasing The Wind“ und wenn man nur etwas genauer hinhört, nimmt man ebenfalls die wundervollen Basslinien wahr.

Durchaus mutig ist es, wenn man sich als Metalband an ein Cover des Songs „The Logical Song“ von ‚Supertramp‘ herantraut. Der wunderschöne Klassiker ist nun wirklich eigenwillig und speziell, doch MINDWARS haben ihr ganz eigenes Ding daraus gemacht, so dass es mit der Ausstrahlung des Originals gar nichts mehr zu tun hat. Aus dem leichtgängigen Popsong ist eine düstere aggressive Geschichte geworden. Das muss man erst einmal hinbekommen.

Ich hatte oben erwähnt, dass MINDWARS gerne mal mit verschiedenen Stimmungen spielen und eine Spur progressiver auftreten. Dabei schießen sie mit dem Opus Magnus „Vultures of the Eighth Wonder“ den Vogel ab. Der Song geht krass über neun Minuten und MINDWARS spielen noch einmal all ihre Stärken aus. Ich muss hier auch noch mal auf die wirklich hervorragenden Bassmelodien hinweisen.(z.B. ab Minute 03:20). Insgesamt ist es der absolute Wahnsinn, was das Trio hier abliefert.

Doch sie beherrschen die Kunst des kurzen stringenten Frontalangriffs ebenfalls hervorragend, wovon man sich beispielsweise beim Song „Crusaders“ überzeugen darf. Der Song gönnt einem keine Verschnaufpause.

Fazit

MINDWARS schenken den Metalfans mit „V“ ein echtes Thrash-Metal-Highlight. Die Band schmettert auf ganzer Strecke hochwertige Songs, die sich am old school Sound orientieren. Roh, energisch und aggressiv! Und ein tolles Gespür für Dynamik und Melodien! Dabei spielen sie mit verschiedenen Stimmungen ohne den musikalischen Grundgedanken zu verlieren. MINDWARS zeigen hier eine famose Leistung!

You have to be lucky sometimes. Because I almost missed out on the great album „V“ by MINDWARS (Facebook) . The band had already self-released the album in 2024 and unfortunately I didn’t notice that. So I’m very happy that the album is now getting more attention because it’s being officially released by High Roller Records.

Who are MINDWARS?

Founded in 2013, the trio consists of Mike Alvord, guitarist and co-founder of the legendary band ‚Holy Terror‘, Italian drummer Roby Vitari and bassist Rick Zaccaro, who devote themselves to classic thrash metal and interpret it extremely impressively. The band name MINDWARS is of course based on the second Holy Terror album „Mind Wars“ (1988), but the project represents a new chapter for the guitarist.

Wild and gloomy

The whole sound has a raw, unpolished surface and also a very lively aura with its extremely lively guitar work. The songs have a strong dynamic and shine with a good portion of rhythm and tempo variations. There are often slower doomy passages and suddenly all hell breaks loose when the fire is ignited. That’s how I felt about the single „Beneath The Trees“, for example. The song reveals a somewhat eerie atmosphere at the beginning, but also unleashes vehement riff attacks from time to time. From minute 02:30 onwards, the whole thing turns into a wild speed rocket hurtling forward.

Although I’m not really into instrumental tracks, „The Road To Madagascar“ really gets me. It’s crazy what the trio fires off here. It’s hard, fast and melodic. An entertaining performance with a high entertainment value. The background is of a dystopian nature, however, as the idea for the track came from an emotional visit to an Holocaust exhibition.

The fact that MINDWARS don’t leave out the melodies is shown by the beautiful guitar chords in the song „Chasing The Wind“ and if you listen just a little more closely, you can also hear the wonderful bass lines.

It’s quite brave for a metal band to dare to cover „The Logical Song“ by Supertramp. The beautiful classic is really unique and special, but MINDWARS have done their very own thing with it, so that it no longer has anything to do with the charisma of the original. The easy-going pop song has become a dark, aggressive story.

I mentioned above that MINDWARS like to play with different moods and are a bit more progressive. They take the cake with the opus magnus „Vultures of the Eighth Wonder“. The song lasts a whopping nine minutes and MINDWARS once again play to all their strengths. I must also point out the really excellent bass melodies (e.g. from minute 03:20). All in all, it’s absolute madness what the trio delivers here.

But they are also excellent masters of the art of the short, stringent frontal attack, as you can see for yourself in the song „Crusaders“, for example. The song doesn’t allow you to take a breather.

Conclusion

MINDWARS deliver metal fans a real thrash metal highlight with „V“. The band banged out high-quality songs that are based on the old school sound. Raw, energetic and aggressive! And a great feel for dynamics and melodies! They play with different moods without losing the basic musical idea. MINDWARS show a great performance here!
