DAYS OF JUPITER (Facebook) haben Anfang des Jahres das Hammeralbum „The World Is Never Enough“ veröffentlicht. Unser Review dazu könnt ihr hier nachlesen. Wir waren begeistert von dem Album und es war uns daher eine außerordentliche Freude ein Interview mit Drummer Magnus und Sänger Janne zu machen.

MH: Hallo Magnus und Janne! Vielen Dank, dass ihr euch die Zeit genommen habt, dieses Interview mit uns zu führen. Und herzlichen Glückwunsch zu eurem fantastischen Album „The World Was Never Enough“.

DAYS OF JUPITER gibt es nun schon seit 14 Jahren und ihr seid bisher eigentlich schon recht erfolgreich gewesen. Von der Kritik gefeierte Alben, 20 Millionen Streams auf Spotify und gut besuchte Konzerte, wie zum Beispiel ein Auftritt beim Sweden Rock Festival, fallen darunter.

Wie hat die Band eigentlich zueinander gefunden? Wart ihr alle Freunde oder wie habt ihr euch kennengelernt?

D.O.J.-Magnus: Sänger Janne und Gründungsmitglied und Gitarrist Jörgen spielten in einer Band namens T.O.L. Nachdem einige Mitglieder ausgestiegen waren, rekrutierten sie den Schlagzeuger Magnus und einen Bassisten und spielten eine Zeit lang zusammen. Dann spürte die Band, dass ein Neuanfang nötig war, und so war T.O.L tot und Days Of Jupiter geboren.

MH: Seid Ihr zufrieden mit dem, was Ihr bisher erreicht habt?

D.O.J.-Magnus: Ja und nein… Wir sind froh, dass wir 5 hochwertige Alben veröffentlicht haben, dass wir viele Anhänger gewonnen haben und in 7 Ländern gespielt haben. Aber wir hatten gehofft, ein bekannterer Name zu sein, dass mehr Musikliebhaber wissen, wer wir sind.

MH: Was sind Eure neuen Ziele?

D.O.J.-Magnus: Unsere Marke aufbauen und den Namen Days Of Jupiter in der Metal/Hardrock-Gemeinde bekannt machen.

MH: Ist dieser Deal mit RPM Music ein Gamechanger in eurer Karriere? Habt ihr dadurch mehr Möglichkeiten, Ihre Band international bekannter zu machen? In welchem Land würdet ihr gerne mit der Band spielen, in dem ihr noch nie gewesen seid?

D.O.J.-Magnus: Das hoffen wir sehr. Wir sind wirklich froh und stolz, mit RPM zusammenzuarbeiten, da sie ein fleißiges und starkes Label sind. Hoffentlich werden wir gemeinsam große Dinge erreichen. Ja, RPM ist ein starkes Label in Ländern wie den USA, Japan und Australien, und in diesen Ländern hatten wir bisher keine große Verbreitung. Wir werden in jedem Land spielen, das uns haben will! Wir würden gerne auf einigen Sommerfestivals in Europa spielen und natürlich auch in den USA und England.

MH: „The World Was Never Enough“ ist sehr gut aufgenommen worden und hat von allen Seiten sehr gute Kritiken bekommen, soweit ich das mitbekommen habe. Habt ihr mit einer so überwältigenden Reaktion gerechnet?

D.O.J.-Magnus: Wir sind super zufrieden damit, wie das Album geworden ist, wir lieben die Songs und wir denken, dass unser Produzent Peo Hedin die Songs mit vielen coolen Ideen und tollen atmosphärischen Sounds wirklich aufgewertet hat. Wir haben so lange an diesem Album gearbeitet und es ist ein tolles Gefühl, so eine fantastische Resonanz zu bekommen. Wir haben großartige Kritiken für das Album bekommen.

MH: Ist die Release-Party entsprechend ausgefallen? War es eine wilde Party?

D.O.J.-Magnus: Wir hatten eine private und kleine Releaseparty für die Leute, die uns bei diesem Album geholfen haben. Es gab eine Menge gutes Essen und Getränke. Es war ein toller Abend!

MH: Es hat jetzt sechs Jahre gedauert, bis das neue Album erschienen ist. Warum diese lange Zeitspanne?

D.O.J.-Magnus: Wir haben seit 2019 an diesem Album gearbeitet, als wir anfingen, Songs für das Album zu schreiben. Die Aufnahmen haben einige Zeit in Anspruch genommen, da wir wegen der Schließung von Covid nicht im Studio sein konnten. Wir haben das Album in einem Studio in unserer Heimatstadt aufgenommen und hatten zum ersten Mal die Möglichkeit, uns Zeit für die Aufnahmen zu nehmen. Das bedeutete, dass wir in der Lage waren, die Songs so zu machen, wie wir es wirklich wollten, mit so vielen Schichten und atmosphärischen Klängen und das Album wurde richtig produziert.

MH: Wie schwierig ist es, neue Songs zu schreiben, wenn man schon so viel Lob von Kritikern bekommen hat?

D.O.J.-Magnus: Wir können nur die Songs schreiben, die wir mögen und die wir auf einem Album hören wollen. Wir konzentrieren uns darauf, dass jeder Song so gut ist, wie er sein könnte. Ich glaube nicht, dass wir uns Gedanken darüber machen, was andere Leute denken könnten, wir wollen einfach großartige Days Of Jupiter-Songs schreiben!

MH: Setzt euch das nicht noch mehr unter Druck? Schließlich will man sich als Band ja immer weiter verbessern oder vielleicht auch ein bisschen neu erfinden und neue Facetten zeigen?

D.O.J.-Magnus: Ja, man will nicht zweimal das gleiche Album schreiben. Wir versuchen, unser Songwriting zu erweitern und einige Risiken einzugehen. Wenn wir einen nicht so typischen Days Of Jupiter-Song schreiben, ist das kein Problem, denn wenn Jannes Stimme in den Track kommt, wird er sofort zu D.O.J., weil er so viel Charakter in seiner Stimme hat.

D.O.J.-Janne: Ich denke, das Wichtigste ist immer, dass wir hoffen, dass die Leute unsere Musik für ehrlich und wahr halten.

MH: Hattet ihr bestimmte Ziele oder Bestrebungen, die ihr mit den Songs erreichen wolltet? Gab es eine bestimmte Richtung, in die ihr es bringen wolltet? Gab es bestimmte Kriterien, die die neuen Songs erfüllen mussten?

D.O.J.-Magnus: Natürlich schreiben wir gerne tolle, harte, coole Songs, aber wir denken auch, dass die Texte und die Bedeutung hinter dem Song sehr wichtig sind. Musik ist mächtig und wenn wir mit unserer Musik die Leute dazu bringen können, sich mit den Songs zu identifizieren und vielleicht Kraft in ihnen zu finden, dann ist es ein Privileg, Musik zu machen.

MH: In den Albumtitel „The World Was Never Enough“ kann man vieles hineininterpretieren. Mit welcher Absicht habt ihr den Titel des Albums gewählt?

D.O.J.-Magnus: Wir denken wirklich, dass es ein cooler Titel ist, den Song hatten wir schon geschrieben, als wir beschlossen, das Album so zu nennen. Der Text handelt von einem Paar, das das Gefühl hat, dass ihre Liebe und ihre Beziehung größer ist, als es die Welt je sein könnte.

MH: Mit welchen Themen habt ihr euch in den Songs beschäftigt?

D.O.J.-Magnus: Wir schreiben über Dinge und Situationen, die wichtig sind und mit denen sich viele Menschen identifizieren können. Vieles ist selbst erlebt oder uns nahe, wie es uns oder unseren Familien und Freunden passiert ist, und wir sind nicht schüchtern, das auszudrücken.

MH: Ein besonders ergreifender Song ist „Desolation“. Der Song hat meine Seele berührt, was vor allem an der fantastischen Gesangsleistung liegt. In welchen Momenten entsteht so ein Song und woran denkst du als Sänger, wenn du so einen Song singst, um emotional so intensiv rüberzukommen?

D.O.J.-Janne: Mein Bruder Robert hat die Texte in einer schwierigen Phase seines Lebens geschrieben, und was die gesangliche Leistung angeht, kann ich das nicht wirklich erklären. In Verbindung mit den Texten ist es einfach ein Gefühl, das in den Vocals zum Ausdruck kommt.

MH: Wie funktioniert das Songwriting für euch? Ist es eine gemeinsame Anstrengung? Ist es eher eine Sache der spontanen Inspiration oder stundenlanger Proberaumsitzungen mit allen Arten von musikalischen Experimenten?

D.O.J.-Janne: Für mich ist das Schreiben von Songs so, dass ich oft zuerst versuche, ein schönes Riff zu finden, das das Rückgrat des Songs ist, und dann versuche ich, eine gute Melodie zu finden.und nachdem das grobe Demo fertig ist, nehmen wir es mit in den Proberaum und alle Bandmitglieder entwickeln es von dort aus.dann versuchen mein Bruder Robert und ich, einen Titel/Thema für den Song zu finden, und der Text kommt heraus.der letzte Teil ist, den Song ins Studio zu bringen, um ihn fertigzustellen.ich denke, es ist ein fantastischer Prozess, den ich wirklich genieße!

MH: Als Band träumt man davon, vor einem großen Publikum zu spielen. Hat es für euch immer noch seinen Reiz, in kleinen Lokalen zu spielen, wo es viel persönlicher ist?

D.O.J.-Magnus: Ja, natürlich ist es schön, an kleineren Orten zu spielen. Wie du schon sagtest, ist es persönlicher und direkter, und das ist manchmal sehr schön. Wir spielen dort, wo es Leute gibt, die gute Musik lieben und eine gute Zeit haben wollen.

MH: Es gibt eine unglaubliche Anzahl von Rock- und Metalbands aus Schweden, vor allem wenn man die Bevölkerungsdichte bedenkt. Woher kommt das eigentlich? Gibt es dafür eine Erklärung?

D.O.J.-Magnus: Ja, es gibt viele Bands aus Schweden, und ich denke, der Grund dafür ist, dass
man schon in der Schulzeit die Möglichkeit hat, ein Instrument zu spielen, und dass man professionelle Musiklehrer hat, von denen man lernen kann. Außerdem gibt es in Schweden viele Musiksendungen und Programme im Fernsehen. Und wenn man eine Band gründet, kann man von der schwedischen Regierung Geld für den Kauf von Instrumenten und/oder für den Proberaum bekommen.

MH: Gibt es deutsche Bands, die ihr gerne hört oder die euch beeinflusst oder beeindruckt haben, als ihr jung wart?

D.O.J.-Magnus: Oh, ich liebe deutsche Bands und meine Lieblingsband ist Helloween. Ich bin mit ihnen aufgewachsen und ich liebe jede Ära der Band. Ich bin ein echter Fan von Andi Deris. Auch Accept ist eine großartige Band mit vielen guten Alben, ich mag Metalheart und Russian Roulette… Und den Rest der Alben. Kreator ist eine weitere Band, die ich gerne höre, und ich liebe das Thrash-Metal-Fest, das sie auf Extreme agression und Coma of souls anbieten!

D.O.J.-Janne: Ich muss sagen, dass ich viel SCORPIONS gehört habe, als ich jünger war, Songs wie Blackout und None Like You zum Beispiel.

MH: Was macht ihr, wenn ihr nicht gerade Musik macht? Habt ihr alle eine Familie? Habt ihr neben der Musik noch andere Hobbys? Was könnt ihr mit eurer Zeit in Nordschweden anfangen?

D.O.J.-Magnus: Die meisten von uns haben Familie und andere Dinge zu tun, aber fast alle freie Zeit wird Days Of Jupiter gewidmet, um Songs zu schreiben, zu proben, Interviews zu geben und die Zukunft zu planen.

MH: Ihr verdient die letzten Worte. Was wollt ihr euren Fans noch mitteilen?

D.O.J.-Magnus: Wir hoffen wirklich, dass ihr unsere Musik und unser neues Album „The world was never enough“ ein oder zwei Mal hören wollt. Wenn du auf hochwertigen Hardrock/Metal stehst, wirst du Days Of Jupiter mit Sicherheit mögen! Und natürlich wollen wir euch in Zukunft bei einer Liveshow treffen!

D.O.J.-Janne: Ich stimme Magnus voll und ganz zu, und wie gesagt, wir hoffen, dass die Leute unsere Musik für ehrlich und wahr halten, denn das ist sie auch, es steckt eine Menge harter Arbeit und Mühe dahinter.

DAYS OF JUPITER (Facebook) released the awesome album „The World Is Never Enough“ at the beginning of the year. You can read our review here. We were thrilled about the album and it was therefore an extraordinary pleasure to do an interview with drummer Magnus and singer Janne.

MH: Hey guys! Thank you very much for taking the time to conduct this interview with us. And congratulations on your fantastic album “The World Was Never Enough”! DAYS OF JUPITER has been around for 14 years now and you have been successful so far. Critically acclaimed albums, 20 million streams on Spotify and well-attended concerts, such as a performance at the Sweden Rock Festival, are your achievements.

Wie hat die Band eigentlich zueinander gefunden? Wart ihr alle Freunde oder wie habt ihr euch kennengelernt?

D.O.J.-Magnus: Singer Janne and founding member guitarist Jörgen played in a band called T.O.L and they had some members quitting and they recruited drummer Magnus and a bassist and played together for a while. Then the band felt that a fresh start would be needed so T.O.L was dead and Days Of Jupiter was born.

MH: Are you satisfied with what you have achieved so far?

D.O.J.-Magnus: Yes and no.. We are glad to have released 5 highquality albums and that weg ave gained followers and that we have played in 7 countries. But we hoped to be a more household name, that more musiclovers would know who we are.

MH: What are your new goals?

D.O.J.-Magnus: Build our brand and get the Days Of Jupiter name out in the metal/hardrock community.

MH: Is this deal with RPM Music a game changer in your career? Does it give you more opportunities to make your band better known internationally? In which country would you like to play with the band that you have never been to?

D.O.J.-Magnus: RPM is a strong contender in countries like USA, Japan and Australia and we havent had much spread in those countries before. We are really glad and proud to be working with RPM as they are a hardworking and strong label. Hopefully we will achieve great things together. We will play in every country that wants us to play! We would love to play some summerfestivals in Europe and of course USA and England as well.

MH: “The World Was Never Enough” has been very well received and has gotten very good reviews from all sides, as far as I’ve noticed. Did you expect such an overwhelming response?

D.O.J.-Magnus: We are super pleased with how the album turned out, we love the songs and we think our producer Peo Hedin really elevated the songs with lots of cool ideas and great atmospherical sounds. We have worked on this album for so long and it sure feels great to get such a fantastic response. We have had great reviews fort he album.

 MH: Did the release party turn out accordingly? Was it a wild party?

D.O.J.-Magnus: We had a private and small releaseparty for the people that have helped us with this album. A lot of good food and drinks and it was a great evening!

MH: It has now taken you six years to release the new album. Why this long period of time?

D.O.J.-Magnus: We have worked on this album since 2019 when we begun writing songs for the album. The recording took some time as we had the lockdown of Covid so we couldn´t be in the studio. We recorded the album in a studio in our home town and for the first time we had the chance to take our time with the recordings. That meant that we we´re able to make the songs as we really wanted with as many layers and atmospheric sounds and the album became produced properly.

MH: In the end, you used this long time to create a brilliant album. How difficult is it to write new songs when you’ve already received so much praise from critics?

D.O.J.-Magnus: We can only write the songs that we like and that we want to hear on an album. We are focusing on each song to be as good as it could be. I don´t think that we are worrying on what other people might think we just want to write great Days Of Jupiter songs!

MH: Doesn’t that put you under more pressure?  After all, as a band you always want to keep improving or perhaps reinvent yourself a little and show new facets?

D.O.J.-Magnus: Yeah, you dont want to write the same album twice. We try to expand our songwriting and take some risks. If we write a not so typical Days Of Jupiter song, that is not a problem because when Jannes voice gets on the track it instantly becomes D.O.J as he has so much character in his voice.

D.O.J.-Janne: I think the most important thing always is that, we hope that people think that our music is honest and true.

MH: Did you have any particular goals or aspirations that you wanted to achieve with the songs?  Was there a certain direction you wanted it to go in? Were there certain criteria that the new songs had to fulfill?

D.O.J.-Magnus: Of course we like to write great heavy, cool songs but we also think that the lyrics and the meaning behind the song are really important. Music are powerful and if we with our music can make people relate tot he songs and maybe find strenght in them, then it becomes a privelege to make music.

MH: You could interpret a lot of things into the album title „The World Was Never Enough“. What was your intention when you chose the album title?

D.O.J.-Magnus: We really think its a cool title, the song we´re already written when we decided to name the album that. The lyrics is about a couple that feels that their love and their relationship is greater than the world could ever offer.

MH: What themes have you dealt with in the songs?

D.O.J.-Magnus: We write about stuffs and situations that are important and that many people can relate to. Much is self experienced or near to us like it has happened to us or families and friends and we are not shy in expressing that. 

MH: One particularly poignant song is „Desolation“. The song touched my soul, which is mainly due to the fantastic vocal performance. At what moments do you create a song like that and what do you think about as a singer when you sing a song like that in order to come across so intense emotionally?    

D.O.J.-Janne: My brother Robert wrote the lyrics in a down period in his life and for the vocal performance I can’t really explain.In touch with the lyrics it’s just a feeling that comes out in the vocals.I often think that the best songwriting comes out from down periods in life .if it’s the ending of a relationship or depression or anxiety etc.

MH: How does songwriting work for you? Is it a joint effort? Is it more a matter of spontaneous inspiration or hours of rehearsal room sessions with all kinds of musical experimentation?

D.O.J.-Janne: For me writing songs is that I often try to find a nice riff first that is a backbone in the song and then try to find a good melody.and after the rough demo is maid we take it too the rehearsal room and all the band members develop it from there.then me and my brother Robert try to find a title/theme for the song and the lyrics will come out.The final part is taking the song to the studio to finish it.i think it’s a fantastic process that I really enjoy!

MH: As a band, you dream of playing in front of a huge audience. Does it still have its appeal for you to play in small venues, where it’s much more personal?

D.O.J.-Magnus: Yes of course, playing smaller venues is nice. As you mentioned it´s more personal and up front and that is sometimes very nice. We´ll play where there are people that love good music and wants to have a good time.

MH: There are an incredible number of rock and metal bands from Sweden, especially when you consider the population density. Where does that actually come from? Is there an explanation for this?

D.O.J.-Magnus: Yes, there are a lot of bands hailing from Sweden and I think the reason why is that early in your  school  years you have the oppurtunity to play an instrument on school time and you got professional music teachers to learn from. And also in Sweden there are a lot of music shows and programs on the television. And when you start a band you can get money for bying instruments and/or pay for the rehersal place from the Swedish government.

MH: Are there any German bands that you like to listen to or that influenced or impressed you when you were young?

D.O.J.-Magnus: Oh, I love German bands and my favorite band is HELLOWEEN. I grew up with them and I love every era oft the band. A real sucker for Andi Deris. Also ACCEPT is a great band with lots of good albums, I really like ‚Metalheart‘ and ‚Russian roulette’… And the rest oft he albums. KREATOR is another band that I like to listen to and I love the thrash metal feast that they are offering on ‚Extreme agression‘ and ‚Coma of souls‘!

D.O.J.-Janne: I must say that I listened a lot to SCORPIONS when I was younger ,songs like blackout and noone like you for example.

MH: What do you do when you’re not making music? Do you all have families? Do you have any hobbies besides music?  What can you do with your time in northern Sweden?

D.O.J.-Magnus: Most of us has families and things to do but almost all free time is dedicated to Days Of Jupiter in form of writing songs, rehearsing, making interviews and planning ahead.

MH: You deserve the last words that you might want to say.

D.O.J.-Magnus: We really hope you´ll give our music and our new album  “The world was never enough“ a spin or two. If you are into highquality Hardrock/Metal you will problably like Days Of Jupiter! And of course we want to meet you guys on a liveshow in the future!

D.O.J.-Janne: I totally agree with Magnus and as said before that we hope that people will think our music is honest and true ,because it is.There is a lot of hard work and effort behind it.
