FORMOSA- Lecker Bierchen und geile Rockmusik – Interview
(Englisch version down below)
Nik: Irgendwas muss man ja machen.
Da wird sicherlich was Neues kommen.
Heiße Mucke in Eiseskälte
Was ging so vorher, währenddessen und nachher so ab?
Juli ansteht! Eintritt umsonst nach Voranmeldung. Kannst du uns darüber was näheres erzählen?
Nik: Jawoll.
English version
Rough Rock
has the band FORMOSA from Germany (Facebook ) in any case in the blood. Now and then also certainly a few promille, which can be attributed after the enjoyment of a few beers. What do FORMOSA stand for? They are rockers through and through! Rock for a good mood and thirsty throats are their trademark. The last album „Danger Zone“ was released on 13.03.2020 and could completely inspire both fans and critics. Our editor „Kelle“ was also blown away by the awesome album. Here is the review (Link ). And here’s a video of the song „Sold My Soul“ to get you in the mood….
Well, unfortunately, the great album was released shortly before the Covid19-Lockdown and that was of course the super disaster for these fantastic mood rockers. No live gigs at all for a long time. But FORMOSA are not the guys who bury their heads in the sand and mope around. So they used the forced time out and got creative. Without further ado, the friends decided that they could brew their own beer. No sooner said than done! A lucky circumstance was of course that Nik from the band is a trained brewer. This makes the project immediately easier. The beer was sent out to selected testers and interested parties in a major tasting campaign. All were then allowed to decide on their favorite. Then let’s see what’s going on in terms of beer and other things at FORMOSA…
The worst thing
Metalhead: Hi Nik. Your album was released just before the Lockdown. Would you have released it if you had known that the Corona plague would develop like this?
Nik: I think rather less, that was unfortunately a bit of a flop. The release was during the support tour for Audrey Horne, which was unfortunately cancelled in the meantime. So we couldn’t really enjoy and promote the record. But it is what it is and I’m still glad that our fans can listen to the songs, because I (and the others for sure too) am still mega happy about the record.
MH: Your album was well received by fans and critics. Are you satisfied with the success of the album despite the absence of live gigs?
Nik: Yes, we are still satisfied. The album was well received anyway and I know from many fans that they find the songs really cool. Sure… the CD sales are actually mainly to be selled at live gigs, but we have tried in the course of the last year as much as possible to turn the „success screw“, but without the live gigs it just does not work.
Creativity is needed
MH: The Corona crisis, for all its horrors and effects on cultural life, has led to many an unexpected creative period. You have chosen to brew beer. How did that come about?
Nik: You have to do something. And so beer drinking, or in this case beer brewing, fits with the rock music like ass on bucket. There are many bands that have their own beer or wine, and since I’m a brewer by profession, that was of course a great choice.
MH: Where can you actually take a brewing diploma like that?
Nik: To do this, you have to train as a brewer and maltster. Is not a diploma, but a 3-year training with the conclusion as a journeyman. However, I’m just about to make my brewmaster.
No modern weird beer
MH: How do you imagine the creation of a beer? Can you explain it in short, not too scientific words?
Nik: We thought about what beers we could make and then settled on two types that aren’t too normal but also aren’t those weird monkey beers you get in every hip store.
And to illustrate the brewing process quite stupidly: first, water and malt come together, creating a kind of sugar water when you separate it from the solid components. Then the hops are added and it is boiled. After that, the hopped sugar water (called spice) is fermented with yeast (as soon as the yeast is added, it’s called beer) and bottled.
MH: How did you find the taste? How many tastings have you done and how did they go? Did you bring other people on board, or did you work it out completely among yourselves?
Two kinds of beer in the choice
Nik: The so called `Wiess´ (blonde, naturally cloudy, mild beer) was my journeyman’s brew and the dark Export (more spicy) is a recipe that I worked out with my apprentice colleague during my apprenticeship. There weren’t that many tastings. It’s also a bit more complicated because you always have to wait about 4 weeks before you can taste. So it’s more of a try-and-error game.
The beers I brewed with ’nem former work colleague and bottled with my classmate from the master school. And for the actual „major project“ we still have a buddy on board.
MH: Were there differences in taste within the band? How did the decision for the two types of beer come about?
Nik: Sure, we have minimal differences in taste, but that was not so wild. I’ve suggested the two varieties and there was not much yapping.
Who knows the beer with the red label from the Balkans?
MH: What other beers are you so enthusiastic about? What are your favorites from the big world of beers?
Nik: As a musician, the main thing is free and cold! Personally, it’s just cool when it’s from a barrel. There are so many good beers in Germany and internationally, I can not really commit myself. When we were traveling in the Balkans, there was always a beer with a red label in Serbia. But no idea what it was called, because it was written in Cyrillic. I have in any case in good memory and I even think that was the cheap beer there.
MH: What’s the plan? Which beer has won the favor of the drinkers, uhh… fans of the liquid joy? Will you now go into production and supply the thirsty dry throats in hot summer days?
Nik: From the point of view of the interview, it’s still extremely balanced. The dark export was now and then one or two votes ahead. The plan is: the beer that wins will be brewed on a large scale and then sold.
Not just new songs, but hits
MH: Besides the brilliant and tasty idea of brewing beer, have you been creative in any other way? What about musically? Is there anything new coming up?
Nik: In the course of the last year we have written a lot of new songs, or you can call them hits. There will certainly be something new. When that will be I can not say yet, because I do not know.
Hot music in the freezing cold
MH: I still remember the video for „F*ck Up Your Liver“. Simply an awesome video! How do you imagine the shooting of the video? What happened before, during and after? I assume that this is a typical performance of you, right?
Nik: That was a real crazy thing. We had 15 boxes of Moritz Fiege Pils and 6 bottles of Absinthe. It was 0 degrees outside and the hall wasn’t really warmer. We actually banged hard with the people you can see there and meanwhile performed the song again and again and was filmed. The video is based on the theme of the song, but one on one.
At a typical gig, we are still a bit more professional and try not to go to drunken on stage. I hope I destroy now no illusions.
MH: In this context it is worth mentioning that a festival in Essen is coming up on July 23! Admission is free after pre-registration. Can you tell us more about it?
Nik: Yes, indeed. „Trallafitti“ in the Weststadthalle, or in front of it on the green court. We had already played there last year and it was awesome. Of course it takes place under Corona measures, but at least something takes place again. I’m really excited and happy that we’re playing together with SNAKEBITE.
Finally turn up the heat and step on the gas again. Maybe one or the other guest will come…who knows.
