Nach dem leider völlig verregneten, musikalisch aber ausgesprochen guten zweitem Tag sieht es heute wettertechnisch zum Glück wieder etwas besser aus. So können wir uns auf den finalen Festival-Samstag mit zahlreichen musikalischen Highlights freuen. Und früh um 11:15 Uhr startet er auch schon mit der italienischen Folk-Metal-Combo…
Æxylium
Reden wir nicht über Fußball. Reden wir über Musik. Aus Italien. Nachdem gestern die Spaßrocker von Nanowar of Steel die tapferen Metalheads auf dem Mount Moshmore beglückt haben, eröffnen heute die italienischen Folk-Metaller von Æxylium den dritten und letzten Tag des DOA 2024. Die aus der Lombardei stammende Band trotze mit Violine, Querflöte und düsteren Growls dem deutschen „Sommer“. Trotz der frühen Startposition versammelten sich schnell einige Hundert Metalfans vor der Bühne und sorgten für eine würdige Kulisse. Innerhalb von Minuten hatte die Band die Herzen des Publikums erobert und die Menge hat den melodischen Soundteppich von Æxylium begeistert begleitet. Ein starker Start in den dritten Tag des DOA. Scarnival lassen den ersten Moshpit starten
Den ersten Moshpit des Tages bringen die fünf Hannoveraner von Scarnival auf das Infield. Die Melodic-Death-Metal Band alter Göteburger Schule geben nach kurzer Umbaupause sofort Vollgas und bringen das Publikum in Bewegung. Der in 2021 dazugestoßene Sänger Alex feiert das Publikum, das bei leichtem Nieselregen in guter Stimmung ist. Applaus für Euch selbst! skandiert er. Um anschließend die Metalheads vor der Bühne mit einer Soundwand wegzublasen, die In Flames oder At The Gates zur Ehre gereichen würde. Wunderbar! Auch hier gibt es mehr Bilder am Ende des Beitrags.
Bei Elvellon geht die Sonne auf
Ein echtes Heimspiel auf dem Mount Moshmore haben Elvellon. Die sympathische Symphonic-Metal-Band vom Niederrhein feuert hier seit 13.25 Uhr eine grandiose musikalische Salve ins Publikum und passen zu ihrem Auftritt zeigt sich dann acuh einmal die Sonne! Sie konnten wir neulich erst bei der Release Show zum neuen Album „Ascending In Synergy“ im Bollwerk 107 bestaunen (HIER nachzulesen). Die Stimmung ist prächtig und die Menge an Zuschauern vor der Bühne ist bereits beachtlich. Echt beachtenswert, dass die Band in Person von Sängerin Nele Messerschmidt einen Song opfert, um eine Story zu erzählen, die mit einem Statement gegen Rassimus endet. Dem können wir nur voll beipflichten. Elvellon haben heute bewiesen, dass sie das Zeug haben, zu den ganz Großen der Szene vorzustoßen. Und wieder gilt: mehr Bilder unter dem Beitrag!
Vulture Industries – From Norway to Niederrhein
Jetzt wird es international mit Vulture Industries aus Norwegen. Und auch wenn Bjornar Erevik Nilsens Deutschkenntnisse wirklich spärlich sind und er nachvollziehbar zweimal wegen dieser Fremdsprache hängen geblieben ist: Der Auftritt von ihm und seiner Band ist faszinierend. Der Sänger präsentiert sich äußert ausdrucksstark. Die Musik ist erstklassig und treibend. Bis auf die fehlenden Schuhe beim Gitarristen gibt es keine Abzüge in der B-Note. Ein ganz eigener Sound, der wirklich fasziniert und eine Band mit ganz viel Ausstrahlung. Chapeau!!! Das mit der Bilderstrecke möchte ich jetzt nicht wiederholen.
Aus unserer Hauptstadt: Chaosbay
Als nächste Band des heutigen – leider schon letzten – Festival-Tages beehren uns Chaosbay. Die 2012 gegründete Berliner Boygroup hat sich mit ihre spannenden Melange aus Prog, Djent, Core und Pop zu einem Geheimtipp entwickelt. Mit dem Stil scheint ein Großteil des Dong-Publikums jedoch nicht so viel anfangen zu können, so dass der Stimmungspegel etwas sinkt. Die Musiker lassen sich aber davon nicht beirren und geben – z.B. mit dem starken „Maniac“ – weiter Gas. Mir gefällt es und ich finde Chaosbay durchaus erfrischend. Schön auch, dass die Jungs die Größe der Bühne für ordentlich Action nutzen und diese für sie neue Erfahrung auch kundtun.
Vierfache Frauenpower aus Schweden: The Gems
Manchmal muss man sich von Gewohntem einfach trennen – und alles wendet sich eh immer zum Besseren. Falls unsere Leserschaft jetzt denkt, wir hätten zu viele alkoholische Drinks beim Dong Open Air Festival 2024 konsumiert, liegt nicht ganz falsch. Aber zur Ehrenrettung hier die Aufklärung unseres konfusen 1. Satzes. Als sich Guernica Mancini, Mona Lindren und Emlee Johansson von der Band Thundermother trennten, war noch nicht klar, wie die Zukunft aussehen würde. Doch mit Gründung der eigenen Combo namens The Gems haben die drei Hardrockerinnen alles richtig gemacht. Und so wird auch ihr Auftritt hier in Neukirchen-Vluyn auf der Halde Norddeutschland ein Riesenerfolg. Melodisch, powerful, sympathisch, rotzig, rockig und röhrend kommt das Quartett The Gems richtig gut beim Publikum an. Kurze, knackige Ansagen runden den Gig der Schwedinnen an. Bergbeben mit Harakiri For The Sky
Die Band mit dem phantasievollen Namen Harakiri For The Sky schafft einen einzigartigen Sound zwischen kraftvollem Black Metal und atmosphärischem Post-Rock. Damit wird er Härtegrad, nach eher etwas ruhigeren Acts wieder deutlich in die Höhe getrieben. Die Zuschauer scheinen darauf sehnsuchtsvoll gewartet zu haben und der Berg beginnt (erneut) zu beben. Die Alpenländler (Österreich) geben mächtig Vollgas und Frontmann J. J., der sich mal eben nebenei eine Kippe anzündet, schreit sich sprichwörtlich die Seele aus dem Laib. Voller Einsatz für das Dong Open Air 2024!!!
Abheben mit dem The Night Flight Orchestra
Zwei Stewardessen auf der Bühne? Das gibt es nur bei den Schweden von The Night Flight Orchestra. Die Band, bei der u.a. Björn Strid (Soilwork) und Arch-Enemy-Bassist Sharlee D´Angelo mitspielen, bietet feinsten Classic Rock und AOR. Sehr akzentuiert wird hier gerade ein grooviger Soundteppich auf dem Mount Moshmore ausgelegt. Die Band hebt quasi ab zu einem rund einstündigen musikalischen Flug. Und die zahlreichen Fans feiern The Night Flight Orchestra zurecht kräftig ab. Hier herrscht eine wirklich ausgelassene Stimmung. Es gibt eine riesige Polonaise quer durchs Infield. Hier wird kräftig gefeiert. Wer nicht hier ist, verpasst echt was.
Ruhrpott Power von Any Given Day
Und weiter geht es hier mit Any Given Day aus Gelsenkirchen. Die Band mischt melodischen Metalcore mit griffigem Prog und hartem Djent zu einem brachial guten, musikalischen Stilmix. Und zurecht verkünden die Jungs nicht ohne Stolz, dass sie vor 12 Jahren hier auf dem Dong Open Air noch den Opener gegeben hätten. Und heute als Co-Headliner spielen dürfen. Wir lauschen jetzt erst einmal ein wenig. Aber können jetzt schon sagen, dass es gleich zu Beginn der Show mächtig abgeht. Den Hinweis auf den Moshpit vor der Bühne nehmen die Fans dankbar an. Und nutzen das weiträumige Gelände für selbigen. Großartig. Eine unfassbare Energie, die diese Band verströmt. Selbst ein Cover-Song von Rihanna (Diamonds) bringt die Meute zum Abfeiern. Als „nur die Frauen“ zum Crowd-Surfen aufgefordert werden, wird es chaotisch. Leider sind viel zu wenig Ordner im Fotograben, um die Menge an Crowd-Surferinnen aufzufangen. Puh, dass war leider grenzwertig vom Sicherheitsempfinden. Wir hoffen, die Fotos zeigen ein wenig die Emotionen hier. Wir haben den Auftritt von Any Given Day sehr genossen. Und freuen uns jetzt auf den Headliner des Abends.
Blind Guardian als Headliner
Hansi Kürsch und seine Krefelder Metal-Legenden von Blind Guardian stehen gleich auf der Bühne. Passend hierzu hat bereits der abendliche Himmel am Niederrhein traumhafte Farben angenommen. Und um 22.30 Uhr ist es endlich soweit. Blind Guardian beginnen ihr heute aus 14 Songs bestehendes Set. Welches natürlich (leider etwas früh) auch die Mitsing-Hymne „Bards Song“ enthält. Die Band beginnt jedoch mit dem Lied „Imaginations From The Other Side“ . Und die Crowd-Surfer feiern bereits ausgelassen. Die Ansagen mögen mitunter etwas eintönig erfolgen, aber dennoch hat die Band die Fans voll im Griff. Der Dongberg bebt und die Stimmung erreicht spätestens mit „Time Stands Still“ einen neuen Höhepunkt. Mit den absoluten Krachern „Valhalla“,“Mirror, Mirror“ und „Majesty“ endet der Auftritt von Guardian und ein grandioses Dong Open Air 2024 gegen Mitternacht! Vielen Dank an das ganze Dong Team und auf ein Wiedersehen im nächsten Jahr!!!
