METALHEADs Toplist 2023 – Thrash Metal
(scroll down for english version)
ETERNAL EVIL
„The Astral Below“ (06:00) oder „The Cursed Trilogy“ (07:28) mal zwischendurch erleben darf.

„The Unknown“
NERVOSA

BEST THRASH METAL ALBUM OF THE YEAR 2023
„Seed Of Death“
English version
„METALHEAD’s TopList 2023 – Thrash Metal“ with ETERNAL EVIL, TANKIST, ANGELUS APATRIDA, EVILE and NERVOSA. With this mix, I will present you very different forms of Thrash Metal.
ETERNAL EVIL
ETERNAL EVIL (Facebook) from Sweden released the album „The Gates Beyond Mortality“ this year. And the songs on the album are like a wild rodeo on a crazy bull. The tempo on the album is very fast in large parts. Overall, it is an insanely lively sound. There aren’t many breaks to take a breather, even if the tempo is slowed down a little, which you can experience in between on the longer tracks such as „The Astral Below“ (06:00) or „The Cursed Trilogy“ (07:28). But even with these long playing times, there’s no time to lay down. I can guarantee you that.
The title track „The Gates Beyond Mortality“ also packs a punch over five minutes and offers some nice changes in the course of the song. However, it is not one of the fastest songs on the album. In this respect, „Guerilla Warfare“, for example, would be recommended as a play tip.
TANKIST
The Estonian band TANKIST (Facebook) play a dark, raw sound in contrast to the band mentioned above. On their album „Forced Equal“ they convince with sometimes unusual song structures, idiosyncratic rhythms and other creative ideas. The sound is not always super catchy. They peppered the songs with many tempo changes. The vocals also don’t follow any fixed concept. But once you get used to it, you can’t get rid of it.
When I listen to the awesome single „The More Equal“ by TANKIST, for example, I immediately notice the unusual but very powerful chorus. The strong bass, which is permanently very dominant and provides for blatant vibrations, is also a striking feature of the sound. There are also groovy solos and raging riffs on board. TANKIST certainly stand out from the crowd with their individual sound.
ANGELUS APATRIDA
Die beliebte spanische Band ANGELUS APATRIDA (Facebook) show off their skills with 10 songs on their new album „Aftermath“. They have a more modern approach to their interpretation of Thrash Metal and the most modern idea is the cooperation with guest musician Sho-Hai as a Spanish rapper. He performs on the song „What Kills Us All“. This is cool, but I liked more the guest vocalists Todd La Torre (Queensrÿche) and Jamie Jasta more. However, it should also be mentioned that ANGELUS APATRIDA also bangs classic thrash metal on the album, like for example with the damn strong song „Cold“. All in all, „Aftermath“ is a top album! (Review)
With „Aftermath“, ANGELUS APATRIDA have released a damn strong Thrash Metal record. Very versatile songs, in which catchy melodies and a lot of powerful driving power produce a very rousing mix, which partly has old-school vibes, but also plays with modern approaches. The album is a lot of things, but it’s not boring!

EVILE
Die Thrash Metal Band EVILE (Facebook) from England ignited a veritable hellfire with their 2021 album „Hell Unleashed“. In an aggressive frenzy, everything was shredded. Now they have surprised us with their new album „The Unknown“ by taking a different path. On this album, the band no longer relies mainly on a martial tempo for their songs. Above all, it becomes clear how much OL has worked on his vocals and sounds more versatile than ever before. And for my personal taste EVILE have done a better job than the icons ‚Metallica‘ on their new album. Why?
For example, the fact that the songs are not stretched out too much and then taste like bland, stale chewing gum. The fresh taste and crispness of a great sound is not chewed to death by endless repetition. With moderate playing times, the songs get to the point very well and offer great entertainment. Everything is entertainingly crisp and massive. „The Unknown“ is an earthquake that breaks open the earth with its massiveness. It is a captivating atmosphere that is darkly melancholic on the one hand and powerfully expressive on the other. For the speed fans, however, there are still three furious thrashers with „Sleepless Eyes“, „Out Of Sight“ and „Balance Of Time“. A great album for me!(Review)
„The Unknown“ convinces with well thought-out, entertaining tracks that not only rely on breakneck speed, but also inspire with atmospheric, powerful crushers. This creates an exciting balance. EVILE have thus created what is probably their most versatile, melodic and mature album of their career.

„The Unknown“
NERVOSA
I really didn’t expect this. With „Jailrbreak“, the power girls from NERVOSA (Facebook) have clearly released the best Thrash Metal album of the year 2023 for me. Their last albums were already pretty good, but they’ve really outdone themselves with the new songs and the new band line-up. That’s why I’m wondering how they could top that in the future.
„Jailbreak“ is a big step forward in their development. The sound is no less aggressive, but much more differentiated and melodic, so that the songs develop more individual character. NERVOSA are also completely convincing in the somewhat slower songs like „Sacrifice“. The vocals have really developed. The title track „Jailbreak“ underlines this development. Right from the start, the new melodic joy of playing is clearly evident in the riffing and later also in the solo. The excellent, powerful production ensures that the songs hit hard. (Review)
NERVOSA put on a more than impressive performance with „Jailbreak“. The new line-up has thrown off all shackles and plays with complete abandon. This can be heard throughout the album, which is bursting with energy and joy of playing. The sound remains aggressive and brutal, but has become much more interesting and entertaining.
