EVILE-„The Unknown“ Review
(english review below)
Genre: Thrash Metal
VÖ: 14.07.2023
Label: Napalm Records

„The Unknown“
Aber was solls!
„When Mortal Coils Shed“
Sehr cool!
„Reap What You Saw“

Megastarke Leistung! Ein Meisterwerk! Hochachtung!

Genre: Thrash Metal
Release: July 14, 2023
Label: Napalm Records
EVILE (Homepage/Facebook) had pulverized me with the last album „Hell Unleashed“ (Review) . The album was a true thrash revelation, which was a really destroying experience. Accordingly, I was euphoric when the new album „The Unknown“ was announced. But something has changed in the sound of EVILE. And I am sure that everyone will be surprised by the result, as I was. The comment of OL Drake in the frame of the first single release of „The Unknown“ is very meaningful in this respect:
We’re really excited to start revealing the next page in the Evile chapter. We’ve taken a completely different approach on this album and I looked inward for inspiration; I’ve opened myself up like I never thought I would. We’ve always been at 500mph, like on the previous album (Hell Unleashed) and this time around we felt we wanted to try the polar opposite – some slower-than-we’ve-ever-done tempos with more melodic vocal hooks, and give Adam some freedom on the leads/writing.
I’ve been working on my vocals since diving in the deep end in 2021, and we’ve worked hard for 2 years on this, so I’m excited for everyone to hear the fruits of our labour. We’re really proud of what we’ve all accomplished with this album. This is the one I hope can catapult us to more ears and places we haven’t been before to play for people who are constantly asking us to play in their area.

„The Unknown“
as the first single is thus exemplary for the sound you can expect on the new album. This time the tempo is reduced in many songs, but the title track already shows that not always only the speed counts to inspire. Strong riffs, mighty drums and great melodies form a powerful sound. And that’s not all. OL Drake proves more than impressively that he has worked on his vocals. One can only bow to the result of his development.
His vocals sound more melodic and versatile. So you feel reminded of the times when his brother was at the microphone at that time, but unfortunately had to leave the band for health reasons. OL Drake has taken on the heavy legacy and his performance is remarkable. This is more than evident on this album. The titletrack „The Unknown“ fascinates with a captivating atmosphere, which on the one hand is darkly melancholic and on the other hand appears with powerful outbreaks. A perfect introduction to the album.
To the point
The approach of the new album really has its appeal. „Hell Unleashed“ was simply a tornado that swept through your head. „The Unknown“ is more like an earthquake that breaks the ground with its massiveness. When I listen to the record, memories of METALLICA’s Black Album come up. And this is by no means a negative aspect. EVILE play in the same sound league, so that these associations inevitably arise. But what the hell! Shit on that! EVILE do a fantastic job and in my opinion „The Unknown“ is the better album than the new output of METALLICA. But of course everyone can decide that for himself.
What strikes me positively in this context is the fact that the songs are not stretched out like a worn-out chewing gum, so that they not loose their great taste. Instead, the freshness is maintained at all times. With moderate playing times, the songs get to the point very well and offer great entertainment. Everything comes across as crisp and massive. The partly dark doomy atmosphere suits the songs well. But one song blows up the average playing times.
„When Mortal Coils Shed“
as the „ballad“ of the album breaks the 7-minute barrier and shows perhaps one of the clearest how much OL Drake’s vocals have improved. The ballad reveals melodic and soulful vocal lines in the first half. But it announces here already the robust impact, in which riff-heavy passages with powerful vocals stand out. Such an atmospherically versatile song could probably not have been presented on the last album. From the half, it changes to a stronger part. A monumental track!
The stormy winds
sweep away also on this album. With „Sleepless Eyes“ EVILE suddenly belt out a furious banger, as if an angry demon would suddenly rise from the previously torn open earth and unleash a hell storm. Here one feels directly reminded of „Hell Unleashed“. Here EVILE again disassemble everything into parts with a tornado. And with „Out Of Sight“ the hell-rodeo continues and you start to sweat. „At Mirrors Speech“ takes the tempo out briefly, but still bangs as usual. The in-between idiosyncratic choppy rhythms form a real punching attack with deadly riffs and piercing drums. Very cool!
Unlike many other bands, EVILE don’t deliver a quiet track at the end of the album, but turn up the heat again with „Balance OF Time“ and ignite an insane sound rocket with resounding destructive power. A crazy final of a furious album! But before I come to my conclusion, I would like to share the second video single with you.
„Reap What You Saw“
as the second single also leaves nothing to chance and is a thoroughly powerful appearance: OL Drake also has something to say about this song:
The second single from The Unknown is „Reap What You Sow” – a more up-tempo riff-fest. Without wanting to share too much about this track’s personal meaning, this song is about hypocrisy; someone saying not to do something, then they do it themselves. I gave Ingo, the lyric video director, no direction other than the lyrics, so the video is his own interpretation of the song. There’s a down-picking riff challenge in the middle section of the song.

Conclusion
EVILE leave with „The Unknown“ familiar safe paths and strike through new terrain. That is brave! But the courage is rewarded, because EVILE also move in this areas absolutely safe and do not show any weaknesses. „The Unknown“ convinces with thoughtful entertaining tracks, which not only rely on breakneck speed, but also inspire with atmospheric power-packed bangers. This creates an exciting balance. Thus, EVILE have probably created their most versatile, most melodic and most mature album of their career. Megastrong performance! A masterpiece! With respect and admiration! Full points!
