DORO – „Conqueress-Forever Strong And Proud“ Review
(english review below)
Genre: Heavy Metal
Label: Nuclear Blast
Release: 27.10.2023
Metal is forever!
Toller Einstieg mit „Childrens Of The Dawn“
„All For You“ gehört sicherlich genauso dazu wie auch „Time For Justice“, welcher mit einem tollen Mad-Max-Video aufwendig in Szene gesetzt wurde.
Fazit

DORO – „Conqueress-Forever Strong And Proud“
Genre: Heavy Metal
Label: Nuclear Blast
Release: 27.10.2023
German metal queen DORO (Homepage/Facebook) doesn’t even think about slowing down. The 59-year-old is bursting with energy and, even after 40 years in the metal business, still doesn’t want to be relegated to old iron. The title of her new album „Conqueress-Forever Strong And Proud“ is accordingly combative. And of course the metal queen can look back proudly on her career and her work. But just as proud can be the whole metal scene including bands, fans and all others who have kept the scene alive for decades. Metal is forever!
The cover-artwork
At least it’s colorful and contains the classic heavy metal insignia like a fat axe, a mighty sword and skulls. There’s also a fire blazing around. DORO in a black leather outfit looks like 20 and holds a fat axe in her hand. The left hand seems to be in a glove, but looks more like it was amputated or melted with the hip. Shades, light source etc. don’t fit together and DORO as the main character somehow gets lost in the whole confused background despite central placement. And she also doesn’t fit with the rest in terms of painterly style. The whole thing seems to me haphazardly cobbled together. This is not worthy of a metal queen. That is at least my humble opinion.
But let’s focus on the musical content, because that’s the main thing.
Great opening with „Childrens Of The Dawn
The pure heavy metal song reveals itself as a powerful mid-tempo anthem. Strong choirs support the charismatic singer with her unmistakable voice, which stand out like always. The song is quite traditional and that’s a good thing. Because one would not expect or even want any big experiments from Doro. And the band around DORO manages to present a great song with these classic ingredients and offers best entertainment. Thus, the entry into the album is very well done and makes you want to listen more.
Attack
The pedal is pushed hard directly afterwards with „Fire In The Sky“. The guitars scream, the drums gallop… Yes, something like that is timelessly cool and it’s just great fun. And there are some songs of that kind that get the blood pumping. „All For You“ is certainly one of them as well as „Time For Justice“, which staged with a cool Mad-Max video. Such songs are made for true Heavy-Metal party and provide for singing along and swinging necks. Crashing riffs, driving drums, power voice and damn strong solos also make this song to a real happening.
The hardest song
on the album is probably „I Will Prevail“, where DORO boldly fights her way out of her comfort zone and shoots a pretty hard aggressive banger from her throat. The song relies less on speed, but more on power and sharpness, which is here supported by the fetzige riffing fitting and in the further course also by a striking male shouting in the background.
As a counterpart to this song, one would then probably have to call „Bond Unending“, which probably offers the poppiest or most melodic experience. Here DORO has teamed up with singer Sammy Amara from the ‚Broilers‘. And I caught myself that I also find this song very appealing and I like to listen to it. Is something different and offers a nice change in the album concept. A great melodic rocker with a special touch, because the duet sounds good.
Memories come up
„Bond Infinite“ with its more modern style and „I Will Prevail“ with its harder format stand out a little from the traditional pattern, which actually characterizes the entire album. But I find that in this framework still completely okay and even enriching. I’m always happy about new sound creations in metal, but also the old classic stuff is still cool and I like to listen to it again and again. It hasn’t lost any of its fascination for me. Often the attraction is also in the simplicity and also in the known. As a metal fan rocking towards the 50s, I feel somehow at home and revel in old beautiful memories.
And speaking of memories, of course a classic like „Living After Midnight“ brings back memories as well. DORO delivers a fantastic cover version of the cult hit together with Rob Halford. What a great song! You can only get in a good mood with this to make a wild party. I love it!
A gripping and rousing first half
we now have behind us. The first eight songs are all real bangers. Then follows with „Fels in der Brandung“ a typical DORO ballad. Of course, this is a matter of taste. DORO’s voice is always worth listening to, even in the soulful phases. However, the mix between German and English language bothers me here. I would have found it nicer if she had sung only in German. On the other hand, more could have been made of this ballad in my opinion. The song maintains its thoughtful quiet mood throughout. I would have liked a more intense increase in the course, possibly with the use of electric guitar or more orchestra, just something that would have surprised me and pushed.
Unfortunately, the ballad represents a caesura on the album for me. After the really gripping first half, it goes downhill for me. The raging river becomes more of a babbling brook, whereas „Rise“ gets into the rapids again and brings some action. „Heavenly Creatures“ also rocks along quite neatly, but the ripping smack of the first half is searched for in vain. Thus, in the mass of songs also some average tracks creep in, such as „Love Breaks Chains“ „Drive Me Wild“ or the cover „Total Eclipse Of My Heart“, which are now nevertheless not the burner.
The same goes for the rest of the bonus tracks that can still be found on the CD deluxe version. Nice to listen to, but unfortunately not more for me.
Conclusion
Metal queen DORO smashes on her album „Conqueress-Forever Strong And Proud“ many horny songs that are probably among the best of her career. This has mighty fire and power! These songs honor the traditional heavy metal and convince all along the line.
With „I Will Prevail“ they even venture a bit out of the comfort zone in terms of heaviness. This should have been pushed more to give the album even more of this sharp spice.Instead, the second half walks on the safe path again, but without the previously shown rousing power. Thus, potential was unfortunately given away in the mass of songs. Nevertheless, there are many good songs overall, so I give 8 points.
