ENEMY WITHIN (Facebook/Homepage) kommen aus’m Ruhrpott und haben letztes Jahr im September ihr Album „The Final Suffering“ veröffentlicht. Das ist also schon ein Weilchen her, aber ein Fan der Band hat uns das Album noch einmal vor einigen Tagen ans Herz gelegt. Dafür sind wir sehr dankbar, denn leider gehen uns bei der Flut von Veröffentlichungen auch mal geile Alben durch die Lappen. Da das Album wirklich geil ist und wir ja vor allem gerne die lokale Szene fördern, haben wir uns mit ein wenig Verspätung der Sache angenommen.

Der Opener „Doomed Youth“ bleibt erst einmal noch zähflüssig und versprüht düstere Vibes, was ja bereits der Titel vermuten lässt. Diese Düsternis wird auch ein Charakteristikum des Albums bleiben, wenn auch in anderer Form. Denn der Song deutet mittendrin einmal an, was uns auf dem Rest des Albums noch erwarten wird. Der zähe doomige Fluß des Songs gerät plötzlich eine Weile in heftige Stromschnellen. Jedoch bleibt es zunächst bei einem kurzen rasanten Geschwindigkeitsintermezzo. Das war ein gelungener Einstand, der Lust auf mehr macht.

Der zweite Song „Vital Signs“ ist dann quasi ein Weckruf, der euch direkt hochschnellen lässt. Es geht schnell voran. Zwischendurch fällt mir der potente Bass auf, der häufig hervorschwingt. Das Gitarrenduo macht voll Alarm. Das Riffing kommt megafett rüber und punktet mit Vitalität und Vielseitigkeit. Die Solos fallen dann entsprechend energisch aus. Auch bei diesem Song gibt es einige Tempiwechsel. Der brutale no-clean-singing-Sound hat für mich schon auch einen gehörigen melodischen Death Metal Einschlag. Also bekommt ihr hier eine richtig finstere Thrash-Metal-Orgie geboten.

Der Titeltrack drückt weiter aufs Tempo und vermischt die o.g. Zutaten wieder zu einem rasiermesserscharfen Mix, der kompromisslos wirbelt und keine Wünsche offen lässt.

ENEMY WITHIN lassen sich schon was einfallen, um den Hörer bei der Stange zu halten. Die Songs haben schon ihren eigenen Charakter und die Band probiert sich auch gerne mal aus. Bei „Unmarked Graves“ spielt man beispielsweise mit dem Gesang und bedient sich zweistimmiger Vocals. Das ist ziemlich markant und sticht heraus.

Auch „Acrotic“ hält eine Überraschung parat. Nach dem martialischen Beginn wird es zum Ende ruhiger und der Sound bekommt wieder eine herbe doomige Note, bis am Ende nur noch das Piano und der Piepton einer Herzüberwachsungsmaschine erklingt und das Lied mit der Dead Line endet. Passend leitet das Pinao den anschließenden Instrumentaltrack ein, der neben dem Piano noch von Synhties untermalt wird. Ein schönes instrumentales Zwischenspiel, dass abseits jeglicher aggressiver Stimmung eine atmosphärische morbide Klangwelt.

Ich bin der Meinung, dass das gut ins Albumkonzept passt und dem Ganzen mehr Atmosphäre verleiht. Man kann als Hörer mal runterkommen. Allerdings hätte ich mir den Übergang zur nächsten Knüppelparade „Thousand Mile Stare“ etwas eleganter gewünscht. Der Schnitt ist schon echt krass. Aber man hat sich schnell wieder daran gewöhnt und man kann sich wieder herrlich den Kopf abnicken.

Fazit

ENEMY WITHIN bringen mit „The Final Suffering“ den Schädel gehörig zum wackeln, denn es gibt satte 13 Kracher auf dem Album, die allesamt von astreiner Qualität sind. Man kann sogar mit einigen coolen Ideen besondere Akzente setzen. Ansonsten wird in bester Prügelmanier deathlastiger Thrash Metal geboten, der mitunter auch doomige Vibes offenbart. Die mehr also gelungene Vorstellung entsteht nicht nur die gnadenlosen Banger auf dem Album, sondern auch durch die sehr geile Produktion, die die Songs mit einem druckvollen satten Sound pusht, aber noch roh, griffig und giftig klingen lässt. Somit ist das Album „The Final Suffering“ auf jeden Fall wert bis zum „Schädelabfallen“ gehört zu werden, denn die Männer haben ein Killeralbum produziert.

Und um das Paket noch abzurunden, gibt es dat Ding auch in physischer Form auf Bandcamp, sowohl als CD als auch auf edlem schwarzen Vinyl (zu einem wirklich günstigen Preis von 20 €). Die Vinyl ist auf 100 limitiert und handnummeriert. Vor allem für die Fans im Ruhrpott, aber nicht nur für die, ein ‚Must Have‘, denn ich bin der Meinung, dass man eine dermaßen ambitionierte Band, die so ein tolles Gesamtpaket auf die Beine stellt, auch für ihre Bemühungen belohnen sollte.

ENEMY WITHIN (Facebook/Homepage) come from Germany and released their album „The Final Suffering“ last year in September. That was a while ago, but a fan of the band recommended the album to us again a few days ago. We’re very grateful for that, because unfortunately we sometimes miss out on great albums in the flood of releases. As the album is really great and we like to promote the local scene, we took care of it with a little delay.

The opener „Doomed Youth“ remains viscous and exudes dark vibes, as the title suggests. This gloom will also remain a characteristic of the album, but in different forms. The song hints at what we can expect on the rest of the album. The tough doomy flow of the song suddenly turns into violent rapids for a little while. However, it initially remains a short, rapid speed interlude. This was a successful debut that whets the appetite for more.

The second song „Vital Signs“ is a brutal wake-up attack, that makes you jump right up. It moves forward quickly. In between, I notice the potent bass, which often swings out in the whole sound. The guitar duo sounds very energetic. The riffing comes across strong and scores with vitality and versatility. The solos are correspondingly powerful. There are also some tempo changes in this song. For me, the brutal no-clean-singing sound concept also has a proper melodic death metal flavor. So you get a really dark thrash metal orgy here.

The title track continues to push the tempo and blends the above-mentioned ingredients into a razor-sharp mix that whirls uncompromisingly and leaves no stone unturned.

ENEMY WITHIN come up with some ideas to keep the listener interested. The songs have their own character and the band likes to try things out. On „Unmarked Graves“, for example, they play with the vocals in using two voices. It’s quite distinctive and stands out.

„Acrotic“ also has a surprise in store. After the martial beginning, it becomes calmer towards the end and the sound takes on a harsh doomy note again, until at the end only the piano and the beep of a heart monitoring machine can be heard and the song ends with the dead line. Fittingly, the pinao introduces the instrumental track that follows, which is accompanied by synhties in addition to the piano. A beautiful instrumental interlude that creates an atmospheric, morbid sound world away from any aggressive mood.

I think this fits in well with the album concept and gives the whole thing more atmosphere. As a listener, you can come down for a while. However, I would have liked the transition to the next bludgeon parade „Thousand Mile Stare“ to be a bit more elegant. The cut is really blatant. But you soon get used to it again and you can nod your head off.

Conclusion

With „The Final Suffering“, ENEMY WITHIN really knock your socks off, because there are 13 strong blasts on the album of high quality. There are even some cool ideas to set special accents. Apart from that, they offer best death-heavy thrash metal, which sometimes also reveals doom vibes. The more than successful performance is not only due to the merciless bangers on the album, but also to the very cool production, which pushes the songs with a powerful, rich sound, but still makes them sound raw, grippy and poisonous.

And to round off the package, dat thing is also available in physical form on Bandcamp, both as a CD and on fine black vinyl (at a really reasonable price of €20). The vinyl is limited to 100 and hand-numbered.
