EPICA (Facebook/Homepage) gehören zu den Top Acts im Bereich Symphonic Metal und sind seit über 20 Jahren dabei. Wenn man als Band so lange in der Szene aktiv ist, sucht man sicherlich hin und wieder neue Wege, um seinem Sound neue Facetten zu schenken. In diesem Zusammenhang möchte ich auch auf das fantastische Soloalbum „Vermillion“ von EPICA-Sängerin Simone Simons hinweisen, auf dem sie sich sehr kreativ und absolut überzeugend verwirklicht hat (Review).

Wer ein wenig mehr Details über dieses Albums erfahren möchte, der sollte sich mal auf der Homepage der Band umsehen. Dort findet man interessante Informationen über den Ursprung bzw. die Hintergründe des Albumtitels „Aspiral“.

Haben sich EPICA nun neu erfunden? Das würde ich so nicht unbedingt behaupten, aber es werden schon andere Ansätze im Sound deutlich. Zumindest der Opener „Cross The Divide“ wirkt für EPICA ungewohnt eingängig, entwickelt dabei eine starke Dynamik und Power. Die Riffs schmettern hammerhart und das Tempo ist hoch. Der Song vollführt keine Wendungen, so wie man es sonst von EPICA gewohnt ist. Mit symphonischen Anteilen hält man sich hier noch relativ zurück. Trotz der massiven instrumentalen Untermalung kann sich Simone behaupten, aber das ist bei der Powerfrau auch nicht anders zu erwarten.

Dann folgen Songs, die sich wieder an typischen EPICA-Trademarks orientieren. Im Anschluss folgt mit „Arcane“ eine richtige Bombastballade, die sich wieder mit voller symphonischer Gewalt aufbaut, aber diese Ballade spielt mit auch mit reduzierten Momenten, die auf das Wesentliche beschränkt werden, um der zauberhaften Stimme von Simone lauschen zu können ohne groß abgelenkt zu werden. Umso heftiger brechen die symphonischen Monsterwellen über den Hörer hinein, die sich immer weiter in epische Höhen auftürmen.

Auch auf die dunklen Growls, welche dosiert immer mal wieder für eine dunkle Würze sorgen, muss man natürlich nicht verzichten. Gesanglich zieht man auf dem neuen Album viele Register, denn die Songs sind auch mit majestätischen Chorgesängen veredelt. Einen beeindruckenden Mix von allem erwartet euch beim progressiven Ungetüm „Darkness Dies In Light-A New Age Dawns Part VII“, das mit acht Minuten für vielfältige Eindrücke sorgt. So versprüht die Musik von EPICA immer noch großartige Theatralik auf einer riesigen musikalischen Leinwand.

Es gibt allerlei Momente auf dem Album, die unter die Haut gehen. Die gefühlvolle bewegende Ballade „Obsidian Heart“ gehört sicherlich dazu. Ein wunderschöner Song. „Fight To Survive – The Overview Effect“ schenkt wieder mehr Eingängigkeit. Ein melodisch treibender Song, der zunächst ohne große Überraschungen dahingleitet, bis man dann plötzlich ab Minute 03:20 krass aus der Bahn geworfen wird. Nie und nimmer hätte ich mit so einem harten Umschwung gerechnet, der die Stimmung des Songs so auf den Kopf stellt. Ein sehr gewagter harter Schnitt, den man erst mal verarbeiten muss. Doch ich mag so etwas. Dies gibt dem Song noch mal einen ganz anderen Drive und eine aufregende Spannung. Die zweite Hälfte des Songs hat noch mehr Highlights zu bieten, wobei man sich auch an einem wunderbaren Gitarrensolo erfreuen darf.

Wer sich das Album bis hierhin angehört hat, wird feststellen, dass die Kompositionen kunstvoll arrangiert sind. EPICA besinnen sich auf alte Stärken und kitzeln noch mal neue Ideen hervor. Die Produktion ist ebenfalls fantastisch. Ich freue mich also auf die zweite Hälfte des Albums.

„Metatonia – A New Age Dawns Part VIII“ verzaubert mit märchenhaften Streichern und epischem Chorgesang, die einen in träumerische Welten schweben lassen, doch dann packen EPCIA mit aller Härte zu und schleudern den Hörer auf den harten Boden zurück. Was folgt, ist wieder einmal eine progressive Offenbarung, die keine Wünsche offen lässt. „T.I.M.E.“ beginnt mit einem etwas schrägen bzw. unheimlichen Kindergesang, welcher dann von einem musikalischen Donner hinweggefegt wird. Neben dem Einsatz von Blastbeats und Growls hat der Song insgesamt irgendwie eine eigenwillige spezielle Ausstrahlung.

„Apparition“ plätschert im Vergleich zu den anderen Songs etwas weniger spektakulär dahin. „Eye Of The Storm“ würde ich mit dem Opener vergleichen, auch wenn durch die häufigere Verwendung finsterer Growls ein härterer Anstrich gegeben ist. Mit „The Grand Saga Of Existence – A New Age Dawns Part IX“ gibt es noch einmal reichhaltigen Bombast, bevor der Titeltrack „Aspiral“ das Album zu einem besinnlichen Ende führt, wobei sich die Musik zunächst auf den zarten Gesang von Simone konzentriert. Im weiteren Verlauf folgt der Song einer emotionalen Klimax, die durch den Einsatz von monumentalen orchestralen Elementen intensiviert wird. Ein ergreifendes Finale!

Fazit

EPICA drehen mächtig auf und haben mit „Aspiral“ ein großartiges Album erschaffen, dass größtenteils die bekannten Stärken der Band auf ein Maximum hochlevelt, aber auch teilweise mit neuen Facetten liebäugelt. Man spannt ein Seil zwischen progressiven und eingängigen Strukturen, wobei man den Drahtseilakt in epischen Höhen mit vielfältigen musikalische akrobatischen Kunststücken meisterhaft beherrscht. Es ist auch ein Album, dass mit jedem Hören wächst und den Hörer tiefer in seine atmosphärischen Tiefen eintauchen lässt. Bedenkt man dann noch die opulente Spielzeit des Albums, die sich reichhaltig und unterhaltsam auf höchstem Niveau darstellt, so ist das auf jeden Fall 10 Punkte wert.

EPICA (Facebook/Homepage) are among the top acts in symphonic metal and have been around for over 20 years. When a band has been active in the scene for so long, you’re bound to look for new ways to add new facets to your sound every now and then. In this context, I’d also like to point out the fantastic solo album „Vermillion“ by EPICA singer Simone Simons, on which she has expressed herself very creatively and absolutely convincingly.(Review).

If you want to find out a little more about this album, you should take a look at the band’s homepage. There you will find interesting information about the origin and background of the album title „Aspiral“.

Have EPICA reinvented themselves? I wouldn’t necessarily say that, but some new approaches to their sound are recognizable. The opener, „Cross The Divide,“ at least, seems unusually catchy for EPICA, developing strong dynamics and power. The riffs thrash hard, and the tempo is fast. The song doesn’t take any of the twists and turns one would normally expect from EPICA. The symphonic elements are relatively restrained here. Despite the massive instrumental accompaniment, Simone holds her own, but that’s to be expected from such a powerful high professional singer.

Then follow songs that again adhere to typical EPICA trademarks. „Arcane,“ a truly bombastic ballad, strikes again with full symphonic power, but this ballad also plays with stripped-down moments, pared down to the essentials so that you can listen to Simone’s enchanting voice without being too distracted. This makes the symphonic monster waves crash over the listener all the more impressive, building ever higher to epic heights.

Of course, the dark growls, which occasionally add a touch of darkness, are of course still part of EPICA. Vocally is much offered, as the songs are also enhanced with majestic choral chants. An impressive mix of everything awaits you on the progressive monstrosity „Darkness Dies In Light – A New Age Dawns Part VII,“ which, at eight minutes, offers a diverse range of impressions. Thus, EPICA’s music still exudes magnificent theatricality on a vast musical playfield.

There are all sorts of moments on the album that get under your skin. The soulful, moving ballad „Obsidian Heart“ is certainly one of them. A beautiful song. „Fight To Survive – The Overview Effect“ adds a bit more catchiness. A melodically driving song that initially glides along without any major surprises until it suddenly throws you off track at the 3:20 mark. I would never have expected such a sharp turnaround, turning the mood of the song upside down. A very daring, hard cut that takes some time to process. But I like things like that. It gives the song a completely different drive and an exciting tension. The second half of the song has even more highlights to offer, including a wonderful guitar solo.

Anyone who’s listened to the album up to this point will notice that the compositions are artfully arranged. EPICA returns to their old strengths while teasing out new ideas. The production is also fantastic. So I’m looking forward to the second half of the album.

„Metatonia – A New Age Dawns Part VIII“ enchants with fairytale strings and epic choral singing that let you float into dreamy worlds, but then EPCIA grabs you with all their might and throws the listener back to the hard ground. What follows is another progressive revelation. „T.I.M.E.“ begins with a somewhat strange, eerie children’s song, which is then swept away by a musical thunderbolt. Along with the use of blast beats and growls, the song as a whole has a unique, special aura.

„Apparition“ ripples along somewhat less spectacularly than the other songs. I’d compare „Eye Of The Storm“ to the opener, although the more frequent use of sinister growls lends it a heavier tone. „The Grand Saga Of Existence – A New Age Dawns Part IX“ offers more rich bombast, before the title track, „Aspiral,“ brings the album to a contemplative conclusion, with the music initially focusing on Simone’s delicate vocals. The song then builds to an emotional climax, intensified by the use of monumental orchestral elements. A poignant finale!

Conclusion

EPICA are on fire and have created a magnificent album with „Aspiral,“ which maximizes the band’s well-known strengths while also flirting with new facets. They straddle a tightrope between progressive and catchy structures, masterfully balancing in epic heights with diverse musical acrobatics. It’s also an album that grows with each listen, immersing the listener deeper into its atmospheric depths. Considering the opulent playing time, which is rich and entertaining at the highest level, it’s definitely worth 10 points.
