KING WITCH (Facebook) kommen aus Schottland und haben mich vor fünf Jahren mit ihrem Album „Body Of Light“ förmlich umgehauen. Es war ein Album, in das ich mich sofort verliebt hatte. Es fielen Formulierungen wie „audible Orgasmen“, „einzigartig“, „berauschend“ und viele positive Assoziationen mehr. Der Gesang von Laura ist einfach atemberaubend und die instrumentale Begleitung ist schlichtweg ein Burner. Daher spreche ich hier noch mal eine dringende deutliche Empfehlung für dieses Meisterwerk von Album aus. „Body Of Light“ gehört definitiv in jede Sammlung!

Nach fünf langen Jahren erfreuen uns KING WITCH nun mit ihrem neuen Album „III“, welches am Freitag beim Label ‚Listenable Records“ veröffentlicht wird. Das morbide Cover, welches von Blasted Heathen erschaffen wurde, sieht schon mal sehr geil aus und macht auf jeden Fall neugierig auf den musikalischen Inhalt. Acht Songs verteilen sich auf fast 45 Minuten Spielzeit und ist im Vergleich zu „Body Of Light“ deutlich kürzer ausgefallen.

Sobald die ersten Töne vom Opener „Suffer In Life“ erklingen, bin ich umgehend wieder in der zauberhaften Doom Welt von KING WITCH eingetaucht. Die großartige Stimme von Laura ist unverkennbar und es ist gänzlich ein betörender Genuß. „Suffer In Life“ legt einen fulminanten Start hin und marschiert mit einem flotten Schritt voran. Der Song ist recht eingängig gestaltet und entlädt sich mit viel rockiger Energie. Mir fällt auf, dass die Riffs massiver und prägnanter klingen als noch auf dem letzten Album. Alles in allem ist die Produktion sehr kraftvoll ausgefallen und ist super abgemischt.

„Deal With The Devil“ nimmt das Tempo raus und beginnt erst einmal recht bedächtig, legt dann aber plötzlich mit einem starken Riffing los. Das knallt gut rein. Auf halber Strecke kommt der Song mit tragenden Melodien daher, um dann noch einmal den Energielevel hochzuschrauben und schließlich mit einem schönen Gitarrensolo zu begeistern.

„Swarming Flies“ startet mit einem harten Riffboden, auf dem die Stimme von Laura ihren gewohnt hochkarätigen Tanz vollführt. Der Song ist ein weiteres Beispiel von dem hervorragenden Gitarrenspiel. Und auch die Drums sorgen immer wieder für Dynamik im Sound.

„Behind The Veil“ sorgt mit seinem balladesken Charakter zwischendurch für ein wenig leichte Kost, was ich gar nicht so verkehrt finde. Es wird eine wunderschöne Atmosphäre erzeugt und darf sich als Hörer auf eine melodisch gewebte Decke betten. Schon das Gitarrensolo in der ersten Hälfte ist ein Traum. Es ist ein harmonisches Miteinander, dass mit leichten Stimmungsveränderungen Kurzweil erzeugt, doch dann bekommt der Song einen kräftigen Stromschlag und es wird erheblich lebendiger und energischer. Ein gigantischer Song!

„Diggin In The Dirt“ nimmt die Energie aus dem Ende von „Behind The Veil“ mit und steigert die Vehemenz im weiteren Verlauf. Das Tempo ist flott und Groove unwiderstehlich mitreißend. Ich liebe es, wenn Laura völlig aus sich herausgeht. Das geht durch und durch und gibt immer wieder Gänsehaut. Aber das gleiche gilt für Band, wenn sie ihren Instrumenten mit voller Kraft die Sporen geben. Diese ungezügelte Energie erzeugt regelmäßig Stromstöße in meinem Körper.

Das düstere dystopische „Sea Of Lies“ führt euch in menschliche Abgründe. Die Riffs brennen sich förmlich ein und die Stimme von Laura thront über allem. Allerdings ist dieser Song insgesamt ein wenig zu monoton für mich. Es dauert vier Minuten, bis die fast hypnotische Monotonie durchbrochen wird, indem der Song eine Wendung erhält und ein schönes Gitarrensolo für Auflockerung sorgt.

„Little Witch“ ist ein rein akustischer Song, der sich recht unspektakulär im Gesamtkonzept einfügt. Er sorgt zwar für eine kleine nette Abwechslung, aber für mich ist er eher verzichtbar. Da gefallen mit so atmosphärisch dichte Songs wie „Last Great Wilderness“ besser, die mich sofort umarmen und nicht mehr loslassen. Der letzte Song auf dem Album erschafft über acht Minuten einen sensationelles Finale, dass maximal beeindruckend ist. Eine stimmungsgeladene Reise mit unheimlich tollen Momenten, die in ihren vielfältigen aber kohärenten Ausprägungen für beste Unterhaltung sorgen. Ein episches Erlebnis!

Fazit

KING WITCH stehen für feinsten energetischen Doom Metal und dies stellen sie mit ihrem aktuellen Album „III“ wieder einmal höchst eindrucksvoll unter Beweis. Die Songs sind unterschiedlich ausgeprägt, repräsentieren aber allesamt den typischen KING WITCH Vibe. Es gibt temperamentvolle Ausritte, so wie atmosphärisch düstere Eskapaden bis hin zu melodisch epischen Ausflügen. Von der ungezügelten Wildheit der Sorte „Diggin In The Dirt“ hätte ich zwar gerne noch ne Portion mehr gehabt, aber insgesamt sind die Songs atmosphärisch tiefgründiger geworden. Und die Produktion hat noch mal einen Sprung nach vorne gemacht.

KING WITCH (Facebook) are from Scotland and literally blew me away five years ago with their album „Body Of Light“. It was an album that I immediately fell in love with. Words like „audible orgasms“, „unique“, „intoxicating“ and many more positive associations came to mind. Laura’s vocals are simply breathtaking and the instrumental accompaniment is also fantastic. I therefore strongly recommend this masterpiece of an album once again. „Body Of Light“ definitely belongs in every collection!

After five long years, KING WITCH now delight us with their new album „III“, which will be released on Friday on the label ‚Listenable Records‘. The morbid cover, which was created by Blasted Heathen, looks very cool and definitely makes you curious about the musical content. Eight songs are spread over a playing time of almost 45 minutes and is significantly shorter than „Body Of Light“.

As soon as the first notes of the opener „Suffer In Life“ are heard, I am immediately immersed in the magical doom world of KING WITCH. Laura’s magnificent voice is unmistakable and it’s an utterly beguiling pleasure. „Suffer In Life“ gets off to a brilliant start and marches forward at a brisk pace. The song is quite catchy and discharges with a lot of rocking energy. I notice that the riffs sound more massive and concise than on the last album. All in all, the production is very powerful and the mix is great.

„Deal With The Devil“ picks up the tempo and starts off quite deliberately, but then suddenly kicks off with a strong riff. It really hits the spot. Halfway through, the song comes along with supporting melodies, only to ramp up the energy level once again and finally inspire with a beautiful guitar solo.

„Swarming Flies“ starts with a hard riff base on which Laura’s voice performs her usual top-class dance. The song is another example of the excellent guitar playing. And the drums also keep the sound dynamic.

With its ballad-like character, „Behind The Veil“ provides a little light fare in between, which I don’t think is at all wrong. It creates a wonderful atmosphere and allows the listener to lie down on a melodically woven blanket. Even the guitar solo in the first half is a dream. It is a harmonious coexistence that creates amusement with slight mood changes, but then the song gets a powerful electric shock and it becomes considerably more lively and energetic. A gigantic song!

„Diggin In The Dirt“ picks up the energy from the end of „Behind The Veil“ and increases the vehemence as it progresses. The tempo is brisk and the groove is irresistibly captivating. I love it when Laura comes out of her shell. It goes through and through and always gives you goosebumps. But the same goes for the band when they give their instruments their all. This unbridled energy regularly sends jolts of electricity through my body.

The dark, dystopian „Sea Of Lies“ takes you into the human abyss. The riffs literally burn themselves in and Laura’s voice towers over everything. However, this song is a little too monotonous for me. It takes four minutes before the almost hypnotic monotony is broken by the song taking a turn and a nice guitar solo to liven things up.

„Little Witch“ is a purely acoustic song that fits quite unspectacularly into the overall concept. It does provide a nice little change of pace, but for me it’s rather dispensable. I like atmospherically dense songs like „Last Great Wilderness“ better, which immediately embrace me and never let go. The last song on the album creates a sensational eight-minute finale that is as impressive as it gets. An atmospheric journey with incredibly great moments that provide the best entertainment in their diverse but coherent forms. An epic experience!

Conclusion

KING WITCH stand for finest energetic doom metal and they prove this once again most impressively with their album „III“. The songs vary in style, but all represent the typical KING WITCH vibe. There are spirited rides, atmospherically dark escapades and melodically epic excursions. I would have liked a bit more of the unbridled wildness of the „Diggin In The Dirt“ variety, but overall the songs have become more atmospherically profound. And the production has taken another leap forward.
