Die großartigen RIVERS OF NIHIL (Facebook) laden zu ihrem nächsten monumentalen Werk ein. Nach sechzehn Jahren und fünf Alben in der Karriere der Band aus Pennsylvania legen die Progressive-Death-Metal-Urgesteine Rivers of Nihil mit dem selbstbetitelten Album Rivers of Nihil nach. Wäre interessant zu wissen, warum die Band sich nach fünf Alben dazu entschieden hat ein selbstbetiteltes Album herauszubringen.

Jedenfalls wurde Gründungsbassist Adam Biggs 2023 zum neuen Leadsänger/Bassisten der Band und im selben Jahr kam der zusätzliche Gitarrist Andy Thomas (ex-Black Crown Initiate) hinzu, dessen Gesang auch auf „Rivers Of Nihil“ eine wichtige Rolle spielt. So geht es auf die nächste Reise voller faszinierender Klänge. Mit ihrer qualitativ hochwertigen Musik haben sie mittlerweile viele Fans um sich geschart und sind zu einer respektablen Größe in der Szene angewachsen.

RIVERS OF NIHIL sind nicht leicht zu konsumieren und eignet sich eigentlich nicht dafür diese nebenbei zu hören. Es erfordert eine gewisse Aufmerksamkeit, um das anspruchsvolle Songwriting zu erfassen und die hochwertige technische Umsetzung des Ganzen wahrzunehmen. Natürlich geht es auch bei den neuen Songs massiv und düster zur Sache. Gesanglich hatte man sich im Laufe der Zeit immer facettenreicher aufgestellt. Auf dem letzten Album „The Work“ wurde bereits mehr mit cleanen Vocals gearbeitet. Ich erinnere hier mal an die Ballade „Maybe One Day“. Kommen wir nun zum aktuellen Werk.

Durch den Neuzugang von Andy Thomas eröffneten sich dabei noch einmal völlig neue Möglichkeiten, was den Sound von RIVERS OF NIHIL meiner Meinung nach bereichert. Der Tiefgang und die atmosphärische Dichte haben noch einmal zugelegt. Bereits am 15. Juni 2023 veröffentlichten RIVERS OF NIHIL ihre Single „The Suborbital Blues“. Diese zeugte von den neuen kreativen Möglichkeiten. Die Chor- bzw. Kanongesänge sind dabei phänomenal gelungen. Eine außergewöhnliche Darbietung. Es ist der erste Track mit Biggs als Leadsänger (nach dem Weggang von Sänger Jake Dieffenbach im Jahr 2022), und auch der erste mit Thomas. Macht euch selber mal einen Eindruck!

Der Opener setzt also direkt zu Beginn schon einmal ein Statement und könnte den Start für eine neue musikalische Ära Band einläuten ohne den grundlegenden Stil der Band zu sehr auf den Kopf zu stellen. Also darf man gespannt sein, was das Album noch so an geschmackvollen Köstlichkeiten bietet. Mag der Opener noch relativ gemäßigt sein, so verspricht bereits der zweite Song „Dustman“ eine ganz andere Aggressivität. Hier geht es härter und düsterer zur Sache, wobei man nicht ganz so krass mit dem Gesang spielt wie beim Opener.

Die Songs sind immer wieder mit sphärischen Momenten gespickt oder fliegen in epische Gefilde, wobei mir gerade der Song „Despair Church“ einfällt, der mit einem weiteren Highlight, das ich besonders schätze, aufwartet. Denn bei diesem Song wurde ein Saxophon mit eingebunden. Davon haben RIVERS OF NIHIL schon in der Vergangenheit Gebrauch gemacht. Das sind für mich besonders magische Momente. Und beim Song „House Of Light“ kann man dies schon gleich zu Beginn genießen. Dieser Song begibt sich noch mal in intensivere epische Dimensionen, in die der Hörer durch traumhafte Melodien getragen wird.

Brody Uttley (guitar, piano, keys, porgramming) sagt über diesen Song:

„House of Light“ bringt die Natur dessen, was wir tun, perfekt auf den Punkt, während er mit der neuen Besetzung eine andere Perspektive auf den Sound bietet. Alles, was unsere Fans an unserem Sound zu schätzen gelernt haben, kommt in diesem Song zum Ausdruck, mit der neuen Ergänzung von Andy als Sänger und Biggs am Hauptgesang. Er hat die Riffs, er hat den großen Refrain, er hat den Prog, er hat die Soli, er hat das Saxophon. Ein klassisches Beispiel für das, was wir als Band im Jahr 2025 machen.“

„Evidence“ zieht den Hörer dagegen wieder in dunkle Abgründe und überzieht den Hörer mit brutalen Eskapaden. Es ist einer der härtesten Songs auf dem Album, eine kompromisslose Urgewalt, welche dort losgelassen wird. Auch der Song „American Death“ schlägt ähnlich herbe ein. Dazu sei gesagt, dass RIVERS OF NIHIL sich bisher bei politischen Themen zumindest musikalisch rausgehalten haben, doch scheint sie die Entwicklung in Amerika sehr zu sorgen und wütend zu machen, denn die Single „American Death“ macht die Haltung der Band mehr als deutlich.

Fazit

RIVERS OF NIHIL läuten mit ihrem selbstbetitelten Album eine neue Ära ein, indem ihr musikalischer Fluss mit neuen Quellen versorgt wird, die für noch mehr Facetten sorgen. Dabei vergessen RIVERS OF NIHIL nicht ihren Ursprung, der immer noch die Basis für die musikalischen Landschaften darstellt. Die Musik führt durch dunkle Abgründe, offenbart aber auch eine Fülle von Schönheit. Es ist ein monumentales Album, dass in keiner Sammlung derjenigen Fans fehlen sollte, die Gefallen an anspruchsvollem progressiven Death Metal finden. Mir ist dieses Kunstwerk auf alle Fälle volle 10 Punkte wert.

RIVERS OF NIHIL (Facebook) invite you to their next monumental work. After sixteen years and five albums in the Pennsylvania band’s career, the progressive death metal veterans Rivers of Nihil are back with their self-titled album Rivers of Nihil. It would be interesting to know why the band decided to release a self-titled album after five albums.

In any case, founding member Adam Biggs became the band’s new lead singer/bassist in 2023 after singer Jake Dieffenbach left the band in 2022. And in the same year the additional guitarist Andy Thomas (ex-Black Crown Initiate) joined the band, whose vocals also play an important role on „Rivers Of Nihil“. So it’s off on the next journey full of fascinating sounds. With their high-quality music, they have now gathered many fans around them and have become a respectable force in the scene.

RIVERS OF NIHIL are not easy to consume and are not really suitable for listening to in passing. It requires a certain amount of attention to grasp the sophisticated songwriting and to appreciate the high-quality technical realization of the whole thing. Of course, the new songs are also massive and dark. Vocally, the band has become increasingly diverse over the years. On the last album „The Work“, they already worked more with clean vocals. Let me remind of the ballad „Maybe One Day“. Now let’s move on to the current album.

The addition of Andy Thomas has opened up completely new possibilities, which in my opinion enriches the sound of RIVERS OF NIHIL. The depth and atmospheric density have increased once again. RIVERS OF NIHIL released their single „The Suborbital Blues“ on June 15, 2023. This testified to the new creative possibilities. The choral and canonic vocals are phenomenally successful. An extraordinary performance. It is the first track with Biggs as lead singer (after the departure of singer Jake Dieffenbach in 2022), and also the first with Thomas. Check it out for yourself!

The opener makes a strong statement right at the beginning and could herald the start of a new musical era for the band without turning the band’s used sound. So it will be interesting to see what other tasty delicacies the album has in store. The opener may still be relatively moderate, but the second song „Dustman“ already promises a completely different level of aggression. It’s harder and darker here, although the vocals aren’t quite as blatant as on the opener.

The songs are repeatedly peppered with spherical moments or fly into epic realms, with the song „Despair Church“ coming to mind, which has another highlight that I particularly appreciate. This song features a saxophone. RIVERS OF NIHIL have already made use of this in the past. These are particularly magical moments for me. And with the song „House Of Light“ you can enjoy this right at the beginning. This song once again enters more intense epic dimensions, into which the listener is carried by dreamlike melodies.

„House of Light“ perfectly sums up the nature of what we do, while offering a different perspective on the sound with the new lineup. Everything our fans have come to appreciate about our sound comes across in this song, with the new addition of Andy on vocals and Biggs on lead vocals. He’s got the riffs, he’s got the big chorus, he’s got the prog, he’s got the solos, he’s got the sax. It’s a classic example of what we’re doing as a band in 2025.

„Evidence“, on the other hand, draws the listener back into dark abysses and overwhelms the listener with brutal escapades. It is one of the heaviest songs on the album, an uncompromising elemental force that is unleashed here. The song „American Death“ is very harsh. It should be noted that RIVERS OF NIHIL have so far kept out of political issues, at least musically, but they seem to be very concerned and angry about the developments in America, as the single „American Death“ makes the band’s attitude more than clear.

Conclusion

RIVERS OF NIHIL are ushering in a new era with their self-titled album by infusing their musical flow with new sources that provide even more facets. At the same time, RIVERS OF NIHIL do not forget their origins, which still form the basis for their musical landscapes. The music leads through dark abysses, but also reveals an abundance of beauty. It’s a monumental album that should not be missing in any collection of fans who enjoy sophisticated progressive death metal. For me, this work of art is definitely worth a full 10 points.
