Today, we are talking to british drummer Jeff Singer, who has been active in various bands and projects in the past months. We want to catch up with all the things, that had been going on musically and find out about the situation at the moment including possible plans for the future.

NH: Hi Jeff, nice to hook up with you to get an update on your activities to tell our readers about.

You have talked to us every once in a while about your musical activities as a drummer. The last time was more than one year ago (find that interview here) We were talking about the new material form KILL II THIS and the past (like touring as supportband of MEGADETH and ANNIHILATOR). And you told us about your drumming for MY DYING BRIDE in the studio on their album.

Future plans included more concerts with ARĐ and a secret „future project“, that you couldn’t talk about at that time. So here we are in May 2025 and it would be cool to get a look on the past months.

JS: Hi Amir. Yes it has already been a really busy year. I started with a KILL II THIS show in London which was really well attended. It is nice that people still remember the band after being together for nearly 30 years. We have Caroline Campbell back in the band on bass. She is an amazing musician and we are glad to have her back.

I have been really busy with PLAGUE OF ANGELS. We have had a lot of main stream coverage covering our concerts playing alongside the huge cathedral pipe organs. In April we became the first rock band in the world to play at an A listed cathedral when we performed at York Minster in the UK. We played to 1400 people and it sold out in a day. Incredible!

Big news is I have rejoined PARADISE LOST and have hit the road immediately as we are touring with KING DIAMOND. We have dates right through 2025 so these are really exciting times and I am super happy to be back in the family.

Interview: Jeff Singer – back with PARADISE LOST and more

MH: What happened to the collaboration with ARĐ after we saw you play with them in the cave in Balve in September 2024 (here is our report)?

JS: ARĐ are very important to me as a band and as friends. Unfortunately I have had to step away as my commitments now mean I cannot guarantee my availability when needed which is not fair to them. They are an amazing band and I wish them the best. Do check them out.

MH: How is the situation with KILL TO THIS, your band for many decades now? I see you play some gigs here and there in the UK. Any touring plans on mainland Europe? How is the response to the album „Variant“?

JS: Honestly, the industry is very difficult now. „Variant“ is a great album but instead of concentrating on music and playing shows the internet now tells us to get content and likes. I am really old school when it comes to harnessing the internet. We have a couple of shows in July and we will see what ever is offered to us.

MH: Another question, as the subject has been up for a while, until Simon Dawson (Ex-DEARLY BEHEADED) took over the drum chair from legendary Nicko McBrain. Would you have taken the job, if they had offered it to you? Have you ever met Nicko in person? I saw him at a drum clinic, he is such a funny guy.

JS: This is such huge news and I am so pleased and proud that Simon is the new drummer. He is doing a great job which doesn’t surprise me as he is a truly great drummer and an excellent professional. I touched on the Maiden material when I played in Blaze after his IRON MAIDEN stint and it is very difficult to follow Nicko. He is such an icon and fans don’t like change. I would definitely have loved the job but they notoriously hire from within the inner circle.

I have met Nicko. He was the reason I and most of my drum friends play drums to this day. We dreamt of the opportunity to play for Iron Maiden, me since 1982 and now Simon is doing it. Unbelievable!

MH: Finally: is there anything else going on musically? And regarding music to listen to, what are your favourite 3 bands/albums right now?

JS: I think that we are up to date. I am working remotely as I part own a business and I want to make both things work. At the moment I am liking SLEEP TOKEN, ARCHITECTS and I have developed a love for the incredible GENESIS album „Duke“….I became obsessed with it!

Seit einigen Jahren ist das bewährte Konzept in Deutschland auf Tour: ROCK MEETS CLASSIC. Bekannte Sänger und auch Musiker treten gemeinsam mit einer festen Band und einem Orchester auf. Aber man wird ja nicht jünger und so fällt es den Veranstaltern offenbar immer schwerer noch hochkarätige Leute für Auftritte im Rahmen der Tour zu finden. Was tun? Man will 2026 auf Abschiedstour gehen und hat mit Michael Schenker (u.a. Ex-SCORPIONS) schon einen fetten Namen auf dem Plakat stehen. Und auch eine reizende Stimme ist schon bekannt. Tarja Turunen, die ehemalige NIGHTWISH-Sängerin ist nach ihrer Teilnahme 2024 noch einmal mit dabei. Zum krönenden Abschluss wird man sicher auch wieder ein amtliches Programm auffahren. Daher bleibt am Ball, wir sagen euch, wer noch am Start ist. Noch haben wir keine weiteren Infos dazu.

Das Jahr 2024 liegt nun endgültig hinter uns und ich habe euch schon meine Highlights der ersten Jahreshälfte hier in einem Rückblick aufgezeigt. Aber in einem ganzen Jahr passiert musikalisch so viel…das kann man nicht in einen einzelnen Beitrag packen. Daher folgt jetzt der zweite Teil der bemerkenswerten Erinnerungen an das abgelaufene Jahr. Und am Ende wage ich einen Ausblick auf das noch ganz frische Jahr 2025. Welche Releases stehen an, auf welche Live-Auftritte freue ich mich und was hat die Musikszene vielleicht noch so für mich in der Pipeline. Legen wir mal los. Mit SYLVAN. Die Hamburger Artrock Formation ist seit fast einem Vierteljahrhundert aktiv in der Szene und spielt dabei auch regelmäßig Live-Konzerte. Eines davon hat man jetzt mal wieder aufgenommen und als Live-Release unter dem Titel „Back to live“ (als Anspielung auf die Zwangspause im Rahmen der Corona-Pandemie!?) veröffentlicht. Hier bekommt ihr die Review dazu. Ein weiteres musikalisches Highlight im Juli war das zweite Album von SHALLOW SIDE namens „Reflections“. Mitreißend, packend…das hat Power. Checkt hier die Review aus. Jedes Jahr bin ich wieder erneut stolz auf unser „Baby“…metal-heads.de! Seit nunmehr 9 Jahren steht die Redaktion für Musik unter dem Motto „Distortion is our passion“ und hat tausende von Beiträgen zu Musik der härteren Gangart verfasst. Auch die Social Media Kanäle werden zunehmend genutzt…es freut uns, wenn es euch gefällt.

Aus dem schönen Kopenhagen stammt die dänische Rockband SIAMESE. Ich verfolge die Aktivitäten des Fünfers schon länger und daher habe ich mich auch im August näher mit dem aktuellen Release „Elements“ beschäftigt. Hier findet ihr die Review zu der Scheibe. Wenig später erschien das Album „Hush“ von THE MOURNING. Der Opener „Chaos machine“ gefällt mir richtig gut…leider hat der Rest des Materials das Niveau nicht halten können…aber den Song habe ich trotzdem für euch:

Als langjähriger Follower von DREAM THEATER interessiert es mich natürlich auch, wenn die Bandmember abseits der hauptamtlichen Band eigene Soloprojekte starten. Die letzte Scheibe des Keyboard Wizards Jordan Rudess hatte ich mir auch zu Gemüte geführt, wie also klingt „Permission to fly“? Hier könnt ihr die dazugehörige Review nachlesen. Im September habe ich mich dann wieder aktiver den unterschiedlichsten Releases mit einer dazugehörigen Besprechung gewidmet. Aber war etwas dabei, das unter Highlights zählt und euch deshalb noch mal angeraten werden sollte? Tatsächlich würde ich folgendes Album für ein Anhören unbedingt mal empfehlen: und zwar das neueste DILEMMA-Album. „The purpose paradox“ heißt die Scheibe der niederländischen Prog Rocker. Hier bekommt ihr die Review dazu. Mir gefällt das Material mit dem neuen Sänger richtig gut. Weiter so, Männer! Ein besonderes Erlebnis war mein zweiter Besuch in der Balver Höhle. Vor Jahrzehnten war ich mal mit Kumpel Hellion dort gewesen und jetzt statteten wir dem jährlich dort laufenden Prophecy Festival einen Besuch ab, um Jeff Singer mit ARĐ live zu erleben. Welche Erfahrungen wir gemacht haben, lest ihr hier.

Das Fazit vom Doc zu 2024 und ein Ausblick!

Schon sind wir im Oktober und halten das neue Output der britischen Formation FROST* in den Händen. „Life in wires“ heißt das Release und es ist auf jeden Fall ein Anhören wert, die ausführlichere Einschätzung bekommt ihr hier. Am gleichen Tag – dem 18.10.2024 – erschien auch die neue Langrille von BLIND EGO namens „The hunting party“. Hier gibt es die Review zum Album und dann noch mal den Song „In a blink of an eye“. Der neue Frontmann fügt sich prima ein und auch das musikalische Material passt gut mit der Besetzung zusammen. Starke Sache! Dann kam der große Tag und wir pilgerten nach Köln. Als einem der zahlreichen Auftrittsorte der New Yorker Prog Institution DREAM THEATER auf der Jubiläumstour zu vier Dekaden im Business machte man am Rhein halt. Den dazugehörigen Konzertbericht mit Fotostrecke vom Abend exklusiv nur mit James LaBrie und seinen musikalischen Mitstreitern (also ohne Vorband) bekommt ihr hier geliefert.

Zum Ende des Sommers gab es dann etwas, das die Fans kaum noch für möglich gehalten hätten. Wirklich neue Musik von LINKIN PARK in Form des großartigen Songs „The emptiness machine“. Dieser Track ist der Vorbote des für Mitte November angekündigten neuen Studioalbums mit dem bezeichnenden Titel „From  zero“. Das Video wurde bis Ende des Jahres deutlich mehr als 80 Millionen Mal angeschaut. Wer würde den Gesang bei LINKIN PARK übernehmen? Dann kam die Überraschung…es war eine Frau Emily Armstrong. Anfangs etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig, aber sie hat eine so eigene Note und doch passt es zur Musik, ja zur Band…wir wollen ihr die Chance geben. Ebenfalls im November erschien das dritte Studiowerk von LAST TEMPTATION. „Heart starter“ beinhaltet starken Hardrock. Hier kommt die Review, zieht euch die Musik rein!

HELLOWEEN räumen in Japan ab…

HELLOWEEN sind Kult. Die deutschen Kürbismetaller haben es geschafft. Im japanischen Budokan eine volle Hütte zu erreichen, das ist schon aller Ehren wert für eine Metalband. Seit der Konstellation mit zwei Sängern und der breiten Gitarrenfront sind die Auftritte der Hamburger Truppe schon etwas Besonderes. Den Gig in Japan hat man für die Nachwelt als Live Release herausgebracht. Wir haben hier die Review für euch und dann gibt es noch das Video zum Klassiker „Future world“. Bitte sehr:

Das war es soweit für dieses Jahr. Und was steht 2025 an? Zwei Festivals sind eigentlich bei mir seit Jahren gesetzt. Das ist einmal das ROCK AM RING-Event in der Vulkaneifel und das familiäre Benefiz Open Air in Duisburg – RAGE AGAINST RACISM – bei dem es Metal für den guten Zweck gibt und man im Schatten des Turms der alten Mühle am Friemersheimer Bahnhof diversen Bands aus dem In- und Ausland lauschen kann und dabei alte Jugendfreunde und Mitschüler von damals trifft. DREAM THEATER werden ihre Tour fortsetzen und einige Open Air Gigs spielen…da könnte man mal vorbeischauen. Von der Band TYKETTO selbst war zu hören, dass man 2025 in Europa einige Konzerte spielen will. Einzelne Daten stehen auch schon, im Frühjahr will man mehr Infos raushauen. Dann ist mein Wunsch erhört worden und VANDEN PLAS spielen endlich mal wieder ein paar Konzerte, auch in unserer Region. Mein letztes Konzert von Andy Kuntz und seiner Truppe liegt sehr lange zurück. Weitere Konzerte, die mich interessieren würden!? IRON MAIDEN, LINKIN PARK und SAVATAGE. Die erstgenannten sind live IMMER sehenswert, LINKIN PARK mit der neuen Sängerin…na klar und SAVATAGE…long time ago!

Was gibt es an geplanten Releases in der Pipeline? Ende Februar bringen die ARCHITECTS „The sky, the earth and all between“ in den Handel und für Mitte März visieren COHEED & CAMBRIA „Vaxis Act III: The father of make believe“ für eine Veröffentlichung an. Nach meiner Erinnerung hatten auch die Schweden von EUROPE für dieses Jahr eine neue Scheibe angekündigt. DREAM THEATER haben bei ihrem Konzert in Paris Live-Material aufgenommen…das wird bestimmt auch ein fettes Paket. Da habe ich auch richtig Bock drauf. Bestimmt cool mit den Fans dort…die sind ja für ihre Stimmung bekannt. Ansonsten sollte eigentlich auch irgendwann mal was von PINK CREAM 69 und SONGS OF PETRICHOR erscheinen…aber davon habe ich lange nichts gehört. Lassen wir uns mal überraschen. Es gibt ja so einige Bands, die mal wieder neue Musik abliefern dürften…es wird sicherlich musikalisch gesehen ein spannendes Jahr. Von der Politik und anderen Unwegbarkeiten möchte ich gar nicht erst anfangen.

Bei ARĐ stehen Sie in der ersten Reihe…

Aufhänger für den Besuch am Samstagabend war der Auftritt der britischen Band ARĐ pünktlich nach dem Ende der „heute“-Nachrichten auf dem ZDF. Die Band, die von sich sagt, sie spiele Monastic Doom, hat nach 2022 bereits ihren zweiten Auftritt unter dem Berg.

Abendliche Ortsbegehung

Zur Balver Höhle muss man vielleicht noch vorwegschicken, dass es sich um eine Halle handelt, die rund 140m in den Kalkfelsen hineinragt und ein tonnenförmiges Gewölbe von bis zu 18m Höhe aufweist. Wenn, wie beim Prophecy Fest, die Bühne nach innen gewandt in den Eingang gebaut worden ist, haben immer noch bis zu 2000 Personen in der Steinkathedrale Platz.

ARĐ gehen in die zweite Runde

Die sechs Herren von ARĐ genießen den Anblick dieser besonderen Location ua. deshalb zum zweiten Mal, weil Ende April diesen Jahres ihr zweites Album veröffentlicht wurde. Sänger und Bandkopf Mark Deeks hat sich deshalb entschieden, zunächst mit „Cursed to Nothing but Patience“ vom Zweitwerk „Untouched by Fire“ das 40minütige Set zu eröffnen.

Slow, Deep and Hard…?

Wer ARĐ von ihrem Studiomaterial her kennt, weiß, wie nahezu alle Stücke der Band aus Mittelengland ablaufen. Sie beginnen leise, bauen sich wie eine auftürmende Welle auf und krachen irgendwann übermächtig in das Ohr des Zuhörers. Dieser Effekt, untermalt von der sonoren und gleichförmigen Gesangsstimme von Mark Deeks wird in der Höhle noch einmal verstärkt.

Kathedralen und Katakomben

Nicht umsonst waren Besucher vorheriger Konzerte, die zum Teil in Kirchen stattgefunden haben, von der besonderen Akustik dort während der Performance von ARĐ mehr als begeistert. Hier unter dem Gewölbe unter 60m massivem Kalkstein wird der Effekt noch einmal um mindestens eine Stufe angehoben. Die Reaktion der Zuschauer ist dementsprechend.

ARĐ – bei Licht betrachtet schwierig

Sehr zur Freude von unserem Kameramann Doc Rock unterstreichen die intensiv roten und dunkelblauen Lichteffekte die fast feierlich anmutende Atmosphäre. Als kurz nach dem Beginn von „Hefenfelth“ – der zweiten Kostprobe vom aktuellen Album – auch noch die Nebelmaschine ihren Dienst aufnahm, kannte auch die Begeisterung des Docs und der Kollegen im Fotograben keine Grenzen mehr.

Düsteres Stehorchester

Action auf der Bühne ist nicht die Sache von ARĐ. Mark Doyle und Chris Naughton an den Gitarren bewegen sich zu „He Saw Nine Winters“ rhythmisch etwa genau so intensiv wie ihr Landsmann Ian Hill von JUDAS PRIEST, wenn er live seinen Bass bearbeitet. Nick Wallwork am Bass – wie Chris auch Mitglied in Mr. Deeks‘ Hauptband WINTERFYLLETH – nimmt seinerseits die Rolle als Bassist zum Anlass, sich hinter jede Note hinterher zu beugen, um der Sache noch mehr gravitas zu geben.

Leicht verdientes Geld…?

Auf „Burden Foretold“ folgt das Titelstück des Erstlings, „Take Up My Bones“. Bis hierhin hat Jeff Singer an den Drums ungefähr so viel Flüssigkeitsverlust wie ein Dromedar bei Raumtemperatur. Völlig entspannt thront der Taktgeber über dem Geschehen. Bei noch immer ca. 24 Grad Lufttemperatur hat sich schon längst in die weißen Fahnen aus der Nebelmaschine der Dunst aus dem Zuschauerraum gemischt. Auf dem Vorplatz vor der Höhle mutet das an wie eine erfolgreich durchgeführte Papstwahl.

Das eine Wortspiel noch…

Die Besucher sind durchweg begeistert von der ganz eigenen Art von ARĐ und bedenken das Geschehen auf der Bühne nicht erst vor dem letzten Stück „Banner of the Saint“ mit anhaltendem Applaus.

Mit unseren mitgereisten Kumpels Michael und Florian sind der Doc und ich einhellig der Meinung, dass uns die gut abgestimmte Show sehr gefallen hat und wir ARĐ bei zukünftigen Touren auf dem Schirm behalten möchten.

Zugabe hintenrum

Der Abend mit ARĐ ist für den Doc und mich damit noch nicht vorbei. Nach dem Einladen des Equipments treffen wir die komplette Mannschaft backstage. Das bezieht auch Keyboarder Kostas Panagiotou mit ein, den ich irgendwie oben vergessen hatte zu erwähnen. Lieber Kostas, deine Untermalung der Songs und die Pianopassagen gehören natürlich auch zu dem Gesamtbild dazu.

Mit Mark Deeks konnte ich mich noch kurz über seine Tätigkeit als musikalischer Pädagoge und Dozent unterhalten. Desweiteren ging es um die Tourpläne zum neuen WINTERFYLLETH-Album „The Imperious Horizon“, das passend am Freitag, den 13. September, beim Haus- und Hoflabel Candlelight Records erscheint.

Unser Kumpel Jeff…

Wer sich jetzt fragt, wann die Sprache denn nun endlich auf Jeff Singer kommt – bitteschön: der Doc und ich pflegen mit Jeffo eine Freundschaft, die uns im nächsten Jahr seit 30 Jahren vor und hinter den Bühnen immer wieder zusammenführt. In Bezug auf Jeffs Hauptband KILL II THIS und deren neuem Album „Variant“ hat das bislang noch nicht geklappt, aber hey – dafür ist Jeff schließlich bei mehreren Projekten und Bands tätig.

Die guten alten Zeiten…

Mit seinem „Chef“ Mark hat Jeff an diesem Abend gemein, dass er es toll findet, die Headliner von PARADISE LOST backstage anzutreffen. Jeff war in den Jahren 2004 bis 2014 immer wieder im Liveaufgebot der Düsterpioniere von der Insel tätig und hat mit der Mannschaft um Sänger Nick Holmes 2007 das Album „In Requiem“ mit eingespielt.

Der Fan im Manne

Mark Deeks seinerseits gibt unumwunden zu, dass PARADISE LOST zu seinen prägenden Bands aus Jugendzeiten gehören und zum Soundtrack seines Lebens entscheidend beigetragen haben. Es ist einfach wunderbar anzusehen, wie dieser versierte Künstler zum Fan Boy mutiert, als seine Heroen das Prophecy Fest etwas später sehr würdig abschließen. Eine bessere Work-Life-Balance dürfte schwer zu finden sein.

Ähnliche Zeiten für die Fertigstellung eines Albums kennt man sonst z.B. von GUNS `N ROSES. Die 1996 gegründete und zwischenzeitlich auf Eis gelegte Formation KILL II THIS hat ihr viertes Album bereits im Jahr 2003 herausgebracht. Und dann mussten sich die Fans bis diesen Monat gedulden, um endlich die neue Langrille in den Händen halten zu können. Wer mehr dazu wissen will, den verweisen wir an dieser Stelle auf das Interview mit Drummer Jeff Singer, hier bei metal-heads.de! „Variant“ heißt die Scheibe und manche der enthaltenen Tracks haben schon ein paar Jahre auf dem Buckel. So etwa „ComaKarma“. Das beginnt ganz ruhig und dann setzen kraftvolle Drums ein, die von heavy Gitarrenriffs begleitet werden. Dazu der starke Gesang von Simon Gordon. Eine eingängige und ausdrucksstarke Nummer. Einfach und gradlinig!

Der andere „ältere“ Song ist „SleeperCell“. Hier steigt man direkt mit den Gitarren ein, bevor das Schlagzeug dazukommt und dem Ganzen den nötigen Drive verpasst. Sehr gelungen sind die in der zweiten Songhälfte integrierten Pianoklänge. Wir haben hier einfach mal das dazugehörige Video für euch:

Für die Fans war natürlich interessant, welches Material sonst noch den Weg auf den neuen Silberling finden würde. Den ersten neuen Song haben wir euch Anfang März vorgestellt: „Less human“. Es geht gleich straight nach vorne. Verzerrte E-Gitarren von Mark Mynett, Power-Drums und der Gesang des Frontmanns. Ein ansprechendes Element ist dann auch nach etwa 3 Minuten der Einsatz weiblicher Vocals, ein schöner Kontrast zur düsteren Härte.

KILL II THIS – „Variant“ (VÖ: 10.05.2024)

Ein weiterer Song, der bereits ausgekoppelt wurde, ist „Deus“. Melancholischer Beginn mit sanftem Klavierspiel, dann plötzlich heavy Gitarrenriffs. Wow! Insgesamt ist die Nummer aber zwischenzeitlich eher nachdenklich gehalten, musikalisch hält man sich dann zurück, der Gesang steht im Fokus. Dann wieder Salven von Drums im Zusammenspiel mit Pete Stone und seinem Kollegen von der Saitenfront. Aber hört doch mal selbst, ihr bekommt dann auch noch das Video dazu geliefert:

Der letzte vor dem Release „bekannte“ Track war dann „Heart shaped grenade“. Düster und etwas verstörend agieren erst einmal nur die Musiker des Vierers, bevor die Stimme des KILL II THIS-Shouters einsetzt. Die musikalische Härte wird über größere Strecken eher subtil vermittelt. Der Song sticht vom Auftreten her irgendwie aus dem Rest heraus.

Was bringen die bisher „unbekannten“ Songs? „Dopamine diatribe“ marschiert sofort los. Dann aber hält man etwas inne und melodische Vocals empfangen uns…aber zwischendurch tritt man das Gaspedal immer wieder voll durch. „Fugues of amnesia“ beginnt recht gemäßigt, bevor man das Level an Power hochfährt. Die Vocals treffen präzise auf den Punkt. Es gibt auch eher düstere Passagen.

„Prosthetic gravity“ stimmt wieder eher nachdenklich. Etwas dunkle Atmosphäre und der wehklagende Gesang vor dem basalen Klangteppich. Nach etwa 2 Minuten kippt das Ganze, Tempo rauf und auch die Vocals werden eindringlicher. Aber wir bekommen auch Verschnaufpausen. Insgesamt hätte der Song auf etwas kürzer ausfallen können. „The future is not what it used to be“ ist ein powernder Track, aber auch hier nimmt man sich Auszeiten und es muss ja nicht immer Vollgas sein. Melodisch und ansprechend kommt die Nummer daher. Da ich die Stücke auf dem Album nicht chronologisch besprochen habe, bleibt noch der Opener. Etwa 30 Sekunden…quasi ein Intro. Irgendwie typisch KILL II THIS…was meint ihr?

Kommen wir zum Fazit – was taugt das neue KILL II THIS-Album?

Welches Fazit können wir nach der Beschäftigung mit dem Material des neuen KILL II THIS-Albums ziehen? Es hat viel zu lange gedauert und die Fans waren schon mehr als angefixt von den bereits vorab herausgebrachten Tracks. Wenn man der Scheibe etwas ankreiden möchte, dann die Tatsache, dass die Lieder mit einem teils großen Abstand entstanden sind und sich daher vom Stil recht stark unterscheiden. Aber positiv gesehen sorgt das für Abwechslung. Songs wie „SleeperCell“ und „ComaKarma“ haben sich nach unzähligen Durchgängen schon in den Hirnwindungen eingebrannt. Da haben die anderen Tracks entsprechenden Nachholbedarf. Insgesamt ist es ein starkes Release geworden und man darf hoffen, dass es bald einige Live-Auftritte gibt und…das wir nicht wieder 20 Jahre bis zum nächsten Studioalbum von KILL II THIS warten müssen. Mit ihrem modernen Metal unter Nutzung entsprechender Samples hat man eine angenehme Eigenständigkeit erreicht.

Beginnen wollen wir mit dem selbst veröffentlichten Release von MOTHER OF ALL: Die progressive Melodeath-Truppe aus Kopenhagen haut am 12.04.2024 ihr 8 Tracks starkes Album „Global parasitic leviathan“ raus. Wir haben den Song „Hypocrisy: weaponized“ für euch als Vorgeschmack.

Das neue Album von SMASH INTO PIECES ist in der Pipeline und es erscheint im April. Wir hatten euch ja mehrere musikalische Kostproben dazu geliefert. Aber vor allem haben sich die Schweden ja durch intensives Touring einen Namen gemacht und so erweitert man seine Fangemeinde fortlaufend. Nach einigen Konzerten in der schwedischen Heimat im Frühjahr, geht es weiter in die USA, bevor man im Sommer wieder in sein Ursprungsland zurückkehrt. Aber zum Glück hat man auch Deutschland und die angrenzenden Länder im Blick. Das wohl überwiegend erst im November. Die entsprechenden Dates haben wir hier für euch:

MOTHER OF ALL, KILL II THIS, A7X & more

KILL II THIS sind zurück. Einen ersten Song aus dem anstehenden Album und auch ein Interview mit Drummer Jeff Singer hatten wir euch ja bereits hier serviert. Dabei haben wir auch schon den zweiten Track angekündigt, der mittlerweile online ist. Der Beginn ist überraschend gemäßigt und dann geht es zur Sache…hört mal hier:

Bereits das zehnte Album haben GRAVE FORSAKEN für das kommende Wochenende zur Veröffentlichung geplant. „Moment in time“ heißt die Langrille mit 11 Tracks und wer sich für Metal interessiert, sollte mal reinhören. Wir machen es möglich und haben mit „Power of salvation“ einen Song des Fünfers vorab für eure Ohren parat. Hier kommt das offizielle Lyric Video:

Zum Abschluss schlagen wir ruhigere Töne an. Dabei hilft uns der Song „Cosmic“ von AVENGED SEVENFOLD. Nachdenkliche Stimmung…ein gefühlvolles Gitarrensolo. Stark gemacht. Was meint ihr?

Today we are happy to speak with drummer Jeff Singer, known from his work with various bands in the british metal scene. And now he is back very active with KILL II THIS. We had some questions and below, you’ll find the answers. So let’s go for it!

MH: Hey Jeff, you have been pretty busy in various activities regarding music. And there are some things going on in the near future. Please bring us and our readers up to date by answering the following questions. KILL II THIS has quite some fanbase in Europe. And these fans are waiting patiently for the release of a new album, as there have been songs released as videos in the past years (as for „Sleeper cell“ and „Coma karma“). Tell us more about the new material and the idea of the upcoming album.

Touring with MEGADETH, ANNIHILATOR & Co.

JS: KILL II THIS has a long history with European shows going right back to 1996 where we completed tours with ANNIHILATOR, GRIP INC., SLIPKNOT, MACHINE HEAD and MEGADETH amongst others. I went on to play in other big projects, but we decided to put the band back together in 2014. We have played some shows here and there but we wanted to return with a new album. We are older and wiser and wanted to record a classic KILL II THIS album with a modern edge, which we certainly have achieved. What we didn’t realise when we started the process was, that I would have a serious spinal injury. Covid would knock us all out of the park, we would get busy with other projects we were committed to and Mark (the producer and guitar player for KILL II THIS) would be so busy with production work.

JS: The album will be released in May 2024 on Revolver Records and is the first with our new singer Simon Gordon who was formally in XENTRIX. He has a great voice with great versatility and range. The rest of the band are the same lads who toured together as China Beach in 2005/2006, before forming KILL II THIS. Our new single „Less Human“ is out now. The the second track to be released, „DEUS“, will be released on 22.03.2024.

MH: in how far is there a record deal and are there any touring plans yet, in relation of the release of the studioalbum?

JS: There are always discussions about tours and shows but we have to think around our current schedules and try and make something fit. Also, the shows have to be a good fit for the band.

Interview with Jeff Singer (KILL II THIS)

MH: in what ways were you involved in the creation of the new songs?

JS: I have always been someone to help with arrangements and that has continued with this album. Right back to the times of „Another Cross To Bare“ and „Deviate“. Mark and I worked very closely on tempos, feel and structure which is something I really enjoy doing. Mark is such a perfectionist, the rest of the album has followed suit but has taken a long time to complete. If we hadn’t mixed and mastered the tracks, I am sure he would still be looking at ways to make everything even better! That is his nature.

MH: in the past months (and years) you have been invited to play with other bands like MY DYING BRIDE and others. Please tell us about these experiences.

The past and the present

JS: I have been so very lucky in my career surrounding myself with excellent situations with great people, which have provided me with incredible experiences and memories. Unfortunately, MY DYING BRIDE didn’t work out that way for me. With that said, I hope fans enjoyed the album and EP I recorded with them. I am now playing live with ARD and I have a secret project which I can’t talk about at the moment, but that will be available soon. It is worth the wait.

MH: how is the contact to the guys from PARADISE LOST? You have been playing together for quite a while in the past…

JS: PARADISE LOST will always be in my heart. As a fan it was a joy to be in the band and to be part of their amazing legacy. And I have much love and respect for all of the lads and their team. I last went back to play with them at Bloodstock in the UK in 2021 and hope that opportunity arises again. That band are a force of nature and in many ways. I think it is so sad I had to leave, but family at the time had to come first.

MH: then you said, that there is a new project coming up. I don’t know, how far the progress has developed, but maybe you can already gives us an insight about what is going on!?

Today we from metal-heads.de are hooking up with well known british drummer Jeff Singer, who has played the drums in various bands during his career. Most impressing in the past probably his work with PARADISE LOST, and right now he is active with the famous MY DYING BRIDE and also still involved with the great band KILL II THIS. We want to ask him a few questions about the great idea of UK Metal Merger (here is a first news about the project) and how he got involved there. Also, as we would like to take a look at his personal situation as a musician in this covid-19-pandemic. Let’s go.

MH: Hi Jeff, great to talk to you again. The last occasion was the chat about MY DYING BRIDE in January 2020 (you can find that here), that was before it all began with the worldwide spreading of covid-19…now we are happy to have you back here and learn something more. First of all, let’s talk about the idea of UK Metal Merger. Who is the one with the idea behind that project and how did you get involved?

The idea behind UK Metal Merger and how it started

JS: Hi Amir. Thanks for having me on to discuss the project. My long term band mate and excellent producer Mark Mynett got in touch with me last summer to say, he had an idea to make a song involving a wide variety of musicians to help with fundraising and try and assist all of the crews and engineers in the music industry affected by the Covid crisis. The problem is, this crisis is wider than anyone comprehends and to get back to any sort of ’normal‘ will be very difficult. We take all of these crew guys for granted, but without them all of the shows we love, just wouldn’t happen and now they all falling through the cracks and some are in real trouble.

I recorded drums for the song ‚In Solitude‘ and then Mark sent the files out to a range of musicians who kindly contributed remotely. The song is over 12 minutes and showcases the wealth of talent our genre is blessed to have.

MH: As a musician, that is playing (and visiting) live concerts for decades, you of course know about the importance of the road crew. Where do you see the main goals of UK Metal Merger?

Now it’s time to help the crews

JS: We have to help these people. Some have lost their homes, some have had to take any job just to try and make ends meet. If we lose this experience and talent, how will it be replaced all around the world?  They are the first to step up for charity shows, when asked and they give their time freely. Now it is their turn. I say to people not to turn their backs. A little contribution from every one can go a long way.

MH: Do you see an expansion of the project, meaning more musicians to join? Are there any plans for live appearances as soon, as the pandemic allows to gain even more money?

Covid-19 makes it difficult to come together

JS: This year for obvious reasons will mean it is very difficult to get anything together for such a complex project with so many musicians. There has been talk of the project being taken to other territories to get musicians from different countries involved, but nothing has been confirmed to me…and I said any musicians can be involved…but the drums stay!  

Interview with Jeff Singer about his contribution to UK Metal Merger

MH: Let’s talk about yourself and the situation as a musician in these crazy times. There had been dates booked with MY DYING BRIDE for big festivals like the GRASPOP METAL MEETING and then – due to the ongoing pandemic – been postponed to 2022. I’m sure, when a musician records new material, he wants to go out there and play it for an audience. How do you feel with the breakdown of the live music scene at the moment?

Cancelled shows bring frustration, big festivals were booked

JS: The breakdown of these shows is really worrying and frustrating. This is the second year, which affects the touring cycle for „Ghost Of Orion“ and „Macabre Cabaret“ (MY DYING BRIDE’s two releases in 2020). We haven’t played one show to support and we were looking forward to festivals with IRON MAIDEN and JUDAS PRIEST amongst others. The other side is that I worry about, is promoters going bust, experienced staff being lost and the prospect that these annual shows we know and love may simply be lost.

MH: Are there any plans, safe enough to talk about, regarding future live appearances? Or are there ideas of doing more things in the studio to use the time while live activities are delayed so much?

A new MY DYING BRIDE-album…!?

JS: Unfortunately our gigs seem to be dropping off one by one because of the impact of the virus, but we are rehearsing and throwing around new ideas for an album, but it is early days. It is good to see each other and to blow away the rustiness when playing. KILL II THIS are recording a short stream for UK Metal Merger for release on May 1st as a run up to the „In Solitude“ release on May 4th.

MH: Finally: there is a big interest from companies regarding endorsements for their products these days. Can you tell us, what was/is going on there and how it came up!?

JS: Things have been a bit mad. I have never been so busy. I had a custom British Drum Company kit delivered last September with all of their new hardware set to arrive later this year. I have a signature stick deal with the fantastic Wincent company from Sweden. I have Remo, Sabian, Hardcase and Roland really on board and have just agreed to use Drum Workshop pedals. I have another thing in discussion, but I can’t talk about that yet. I am a very lucky boy. I just need some gigs to get everything out of the boxes!

Der gute Mann hat eine bewegte Karriere, auf die er blicken kann. Die erste namhafte Band war WOLFSBANE in den 80er Jahren und nach einem Gastspiel am Mikro einer der einflussreichsten britischen Metal Formationen – die Rede ist von IRON MAIDEN (hier hat sich Blaze Bayley auf den Alben „The X-Factor“ 1995 und „Virtual XI“ 1998 verewigt) – ist der mittlerweile 56-jährige unter seinem eigenen Namen unterwegs.

Einfach nur BLAZE – anno 2000!

Aber es gab auch eine Phase, wo er unter dem schlichten Bandnamen BLAZE aktiv war. Und auf diese Zeit, genau 20 Jahre zurück, wollen wir heute mit einem Blick auf die Veröffentlichung von „Silicon messiah“ im Mai 2000 schauen. Zehn Tracks hatte Bayley mit seinen musikalischen Mitstreitern damals auf den Silberling gebannt. Mit wummernden Drums geht es gleich los. Die bediente zu dieser Zeit Jeff Singer (der seinerseits aktuell im Jahr 2020 die Felle bei MY DYING BRIDE bearbeitet). Mit präzisem Schlagzeugspiel gab er den verlässlichen Taktgeber für den Rest der Truppe. Dieser bestand aus Rob Naylor, der für den Tieftöner zuständig ist. An der Gitarrenfront betätigten sich John Slater und Steve Wray. Also was die Musiker angeht, ich hatte damals auf der Tour die Gelegenheit, die Herrschaften persönlich zu treffen. Sind alle sehr nett!

Was gibt es musikalisch? Wenn wir etwas nach vorne schauen, kommt der starke Titeltrack. Vielleicht eine der herausragendsten Nummern des Albums. Das Material ist ansonsten handwerklich gut gemachter Heavy Metal mit oftmals ordentlichem Tempo und Drive. Melodische Gitarrenarbeit mit passgenauen Soli, die warme Stimme von Blaze Bayley, Doublebass-Kaskaden. Das sitzt. Mit „Identity“ zeigen die fünf Herren, dass man es auch – zumindest für einen Moment – ruhiger angehen lassen kann. Ähnlich zu Beginn des nachfolgenden Songs. Aber schon bald rockt man wieder ordentlich los, wenn man sich auch hier etwas zurückhält.

Aber schon bei „The launch“ wird das Gaspedal voll durchgetreten. Mitreißend im wahrsten Wortsinn…Ooohhh…(Reinhören, dann versteht ihr…). Mit „Stare at the sun“ wird es noch mal emotional.

Ich gehöre ja noch zur Generation der physischen Tonträger und es macht auch nach 20 Jahren noch Spaß, diese Scheibe aus dem CD-Regal zu nehmen und ein paar Runden im Player kreisen zu lassen. Wer das Teil noch nicht kennt…checkt es aus! Dieses Album hat keine wirklichen Schwächen und es zündet immer noch nach 2 Jahrzehnten!

Hat es Blaze heute noch drauf?

Ihr fragt euch vielleicht, wie Blaze Bayley heute unterwegs ist. Wir haben für euch vor ca. 1 Jahr ein Konzert besucht und hier ist der Bericht.

As things are moving onwards, we had the spontaneous chance to chat with drummer Jeff Singer (KILL II THIS, Ex-PARADISE LOST) about his recent work with MY DYING BRIDE.

It´s amazing, how fast time is moving. The last time we did an interview was at the end of 2018, so I think it´s nice to hook up and talk about the latest developments. The last time the focus was totally on your band KILL II THIS.

What is going on?

MH: so to start this interview, maybe you can give us a little update on what is going there right now? In how far are the negotiations regarding an album or more touring activities apart from the UK (as you did recently)?

JS: With KILL II THIS there is no real pressure. We feel strongly that when something is ready to release, we will put something new out. The new album is finished, in fact the drums were done a year ago. Mark is now mixing the album and then we will decide, what we want to do in terms of a release. What is interesting is, that KILL II THIS is now nearly 25 years old and there are a whole generation of fans, that don’t know who we are. When we played the Rage Against Racism last year (2019), we went down really well, but most people had never heard of us before, despite our heavy touring schedule in the first ten years of the band.

MH: your latest efforts successfully involved you in the recording of the new MY DYING BRIDE album. Please tell us, how that came up.

How the work with MY DYING BRIDE came up

JS: Mark Mynett (KILL II THIS guitar player) is also a very talented producer and was asked by MDB to get involved in production for their new album for Nuclear Blast. The album is a big comeback for the band after 5 years and has to be right. Mark had discussed me with the band and they asked, if I was interested in recording the album. This is a real honor, being asked by such an established band to get involved and I would not have wanted to turn the opportunity down. Even though I have toured in the same circles as the band for over 20 years and they come from the same area, as my previous group PARADISE LOST we had never actually met and I recorded the album without even meeting the band. They were very trusting of the partnership and experience Mark and I have together.

MH: there are some big festivals (like the GRASPOP METAL MEETING in Belgium in June), where MY DYING BRIDE are booked. Can you tell us more about the touring plans in 2020/2021…is there a headline tour being planned too?

Rare live appearances in 2020

JS: The band historically does not tour heavily and every gig offer is checked out individually. I don’t know of any touring plans at the moment. The band are concentrating on festivals and easing their way back after being away from the scene for a long time.

MH: working with big names in the scene (like it happened with PARADISE LOST in the past), you get more attention of the companies in the drum business. That lead to a new endorsment deal. Please let us know, what company that is and what the cooperation is about. Also tell us, what other endorsements you have right now.

JS: It is always an honor to be endorsed and I have been lucky to have had some great deals in my career with amazing companies but endorsements have changed and ‚free things‘ are really rare now. I have just signed to British Drum Company, who make the most incredible sounding drums, I have ever heard. They are based in my home town and are expanding fast. They have signed Nicko McBrain from IRON MAIDEN, they have Simon Dawson from Steve Harris‘ BRITISH LION, Pete Jupp from FM as well as CORROSION OF CONFORMITY. They are a really exciting company with a great pedigree and I am honored to be involved in my own small way. Jerome Marcus, who signed me to Sabian Cymbals in 2001 said, sign if you love the product, not for free stuff and it is true. I have been with Sabian for nearly 20 years, Remo drum heads for nearly 25 years and last year I signed with Roland V Drums. I am about to sign a new drumstick deal, which is exciting too. I feel very lucky and proud to have this status.

PARADISE LOST – a book and respected friends

MH: talking about PARADISE LOST…how it your contact to the guys nowadays, as you had some years of a musical career together?

JS: We have banter on Facebook and I text with Greg every so often. I love and miss those guys and there is a lot of respect there. I played with them at their 30th anniversary show last year, which was awesome too. A biography book called „No Celebration“ has just been released, which I did a long interview for. I am looking forward to reading the book and seeing what people really thought!

MH: as we got in touch for this interview, you told me, how much you were touched by the death of a great drummer. I´m talking about Neil Peart of RUSH, who just died (from brain cancer, I believe!?). In how far was he an influence for your drumming? Name other drummers, that had an impact on your style or got you into drumming at all. Can you remember the very beginning of it all…please let us know.

Idols and inspirations

JS: This really hurt. More than Lemmy, more than Bowie. He was an icon. I am not the biggest RUSH fan, but I loved his playing, his inspirational outlook and he is a classic hero to many. I have too many heroes and people I respect to name individually. I believe you can learn from everyone. As a kid I loved Clive Burr and then Nicko from IRON MAIDEN, Nigel Glockler, Tommy Lee, Vinnie Appice, Dave Lombardo, Pete Jupp, Jerry Gaskill, Tommy Aldridge…the list is endless and I am still star struck by all of these guys.

MH: as we come to an end, I´d ask you to tell us your expectations (and wishes/hopes) fort he year 2020…musically and also personally etc.

JS: Firstly, to be happy and healthy. We had a couple of family shocks this year (2019), which made us think nothing should be taken for granted. I can’t wait to get out with MDB and play shows.
