Bei „METALHEADs Top List 2021 – Teil 2“ werden die Töne um einiges härter. Es stehen die Kategorien Thrash Metal, Doom Metal, Metalcore und Progressive Metal auf dem Programm. Viel Spaß!

Thrash Metal

Aus der Sparte gab es dieses Jahr mächtig viel um die Ohren geknallt. Da wir bei ‚metal-heads.de‘ ohnehin schon versucht haben die besten Alben rauszupicken, war die Auswahl hier besonders schwierig.

NECRONOMICON

sind ein alte Institution im deutschen Metal-Business. „The Final Chapter“ ist ein Album nach Maß und schließt sich erbarmungslos an das Vorgängeralbum „Unleashed Bastards“ an und setzt dem sogar noch eins drauf. Schon beim letzten Album waren starke ausdauernde Nackenmuskeln gefragt, wenn der furiose NECRONOMICON-Sound über Euch hinwegfegt. NECRONOMICON (Facebook) entfesseln mit „The Final Chapter“ ein dämonisches Höllenfest. Ähnlich höllisch geht es bei der nächsten Band zur Sache. (Review / Interview mit Freddy)

EVILE

aus England gehen die Sache etwas klassischer an, aber nicht weniger angriffslustig. Der Sound erinnert mich umgehend an die alten Zeiten des traditionellen puren Thrash-Metal. EVILE (Facebook) entfesseln mit barbarischer Vehemenz das Thrash-Metal-Ungeheuer. EVILE haben das Album mit Ideen versehen, so dass es trotz des grundlegend zerstörerischen Konzepts nicht nur monoton dahingeprügelt wird. Ben Carter zerlegt wie Chuck Norris auf Koks in einem wahren Rausch seine Schießbude. Auffällig ist, dass er mitunter die HiHats bzw. Becken dominanter bzw. häufiger einsetzt und so für besondere Akzente sorgt. Dazu werden schonungslose Riffs geschmettert und einen Haufen verdammt geiler Solos gewirbelt, wo sich OL den Arsch abshreddert. EVILE entfesseln tatsächlich die Hölle. „Hell Unleashed“ lässt dem Wahnsinn freien Lauf und pulverisiert in einem Anfall kreativer aggressiver Tobsucht mit klassischem Thrash-Metal alles auf seinem Weg. BONDED

kommen aus dem Ruhrpott, und zwar aus Dortmund. Direkt in meiner Nachbarschaft prügeln BONDED(Facebook) brutalen Thrash-Metal  was das Zeug hält. Aber der Sound ist finsterer als bei EVILE. Doch er wird Euch genauso roh und blutig in die Fresse geschmettert. Freunde guter alter Thrash-Kultur werden auch hier ihre helle Freude haben. Die Songs von BONDED sind mit Wut im Bauch geschrieben und gehen mit ihrer Kritik schonungslos und unmißverständlich zur Sache. Die Ruhrpottschmiede wurde intensiv unter Feuer gesetzt, reiner harter Stahl zum glühen gebracht und auf dem Amboss die Waffe „Into Blackness“ geschmiedet. Die ist brutal scharf und schlägt gnadenlos zu. BONDED metzeln sich mit hammermäßigen 11 Songs unbarmherzig durch die Gehörgänge. (Review)

FLOTSAM & JETSAM mit „Blood In The Water“

Die Haudegen von der Kultband FLOTSAM & JETSAM (Facebook) enttäuschen fast nie. Man hat viel mehr das Gefühl, dass sie es noch mal richtig wissen wollen. „Blood In The Water“ ist technisch und vom Songwriting her das ultimative Hörerlebnis. FLOTSAM & JETSAM schleudern den Thrash Metal in die Moderne ohne dabei an Vehemenz und Energie zu verlieren. Abgesehen davon liebe ich diese geile Stimme von Eric A. Knutson, der für mich unbestritten zu den Besten zählt. Mit „Blood In The Water“ übertreffen FLOTSAM AND JETSAM sich selbst und erschaffen sich ein Denkmal. Dabei setzen FLOTSAM AND JETSAM nicht nur auf hemmungsloses Thrashing, sondern paaren die Songs mit traumhaften melodischen Akkorden und Gesangslinien, die sich mit druckvoller Power wie heiß glühendes geschmolzenes Metall um die Gehörwindungen legen und sich dauerhaft im Gehirn festsetzen. DOOM METAL

MARIANAS REST

aus Finnland heben mit ihrem Werk „Fata Morgana“ ein wahres DEATH-DOOM-Highlight aus der schwarzen See. Mal bricht sie tonnenschwer über Euch herein, um Euch in anderen Momenten mit einer federleichten Hülle zu umgarnen. Sie spinnt ihre Fäden geschickt und so faszinierend, dass man schnell in die Welt von MARIANAS REST (Facebook) eingewoben wird. Ein fesselndes Zusammenspiel von betörenden schwerelosen Melodien und brachialen zermalmenden Ausbrüchen. Eine faszinierende Aura umgibt die Songs. Von monumental bis minimalistisch, von brachial bis fragil, von vehement bis melodisch ist einfach alles vertreten. Lasst diese bittersüße Köstlichkeit im auditiven Genuss zergehen und nehmt sie mit all Euren Sinnen auf! (Review / Interview)

SWALLOW THE SUN mit „Killing Moons“

In einen emotionalen Abgrund ziehen uns SWALLOW THE SUN (Facebook) mit ihrem neuen Album „Killing Moons“, welches schwerer verdaulich als das letzte Album geworden ist und manchen den Zugang vielleicht erschweren wird. Aber dieses Album ist nichts desto trotz ein Meisterwerk. Mit „Moonflowers“ haben sich SWALLOW THE SUN selbst übertroffen und das atmosphärisch dichteste und packendste Werk ihrer Karriere erschaffen. Aber seid gewarnt: Es macht süchtig! Und wie Raivio selbst sagte: 

„Ein Album muss berühren, Emotionen erschaffen!“

Und genau das tut das Album! Das Album trägt eine schwere emotionale Last und wirkt trotz seiner Traurigkeit wie eine Reinigung des Geistes. Das sind natürlich nur meine bescheidenen Empfindungen bei diesem Album. Jeder muss seine eigene Reise mit diesem Album machen und dabei Eindrücke und Empfindungen auf sich wirken lassen. Aber ich kann Euch versprechen, dass es eine bewegende und unvergessliche Reise werden wird. Diese Symbiose der melodischen zarten Verzweiflung und Verletzlichkeit mit der gnadenlosen finsteren Härte emotionaler Ausbrüche ist ergreifend und faszinierend. (Review)

Metalcore

ARCHITECTS

geben sich auf dem neuen Album wechselseitiger als auf dem Vorgänger. „Holy Hell“ war von rabiater Wut und Aggressivität geprägt. „For Those That Wish To Exist“ besitzt mehr ruhige und viele melodische Phasen, die jedoch bereits auch auf „Holy Hell“ zu hören waren, wie z.B. das Streicherensemble und die melodiösen Gesangslinien. Wer also ein puristischer Metalcore-Fan des Vorgängeralbums ist, wird allerdings vielleicht nicht so großen Gefallen daran finden, den hier bewegt sich der Sound auch mal abseits des Metalcore. Auf die brachialen Ausbrüche im Sound und im Gesang, die dem Hörer entgegengeschmettert werden, muss aber nicht verzichtet werden und kommen zu genüge vor. ARCHITECTS (Facebook) leben ihr Faible für Melodien mit „For Whose That Wish To Exist“ weiter aus. 

Was man ARCHITECTS zu Gute halten muss, ist der Umstand, dass sie nicht versucht haben, den sicheren Weg zu gehen und das Vorgängeralbum in seiner Art zu kopieren. Man hat Dinge daraus aufgegriffen, sich weiterentwickelt ohne seinen Wurzeln zu vergessen. Das ist eine Gratwanderung, die schwer zu meistern ist. Ich persönlich bin der Meinung, dass ARCHITECTS dies famos hinbekommen haben. Ein beachtlicher Balanceakt zwischen Vehemenz und Emotionen, dass manchmal aus dem Metalcore-Korsett ausbricht. (Review)

IMMINENCE mit „Heaven In Hiding“

Die Schweden haben das wahr gemacht, was sie mit ihrer ersten Singleauskopplung „Temptation“ versprochen hatten. Ein unglaublicher Song, der mit zu den Besten zählt, was ich dieses Jahr hören durfte. „Temptation“ ist ein knallharter Monstersong, der die bisherigen Soundstandards von IMMINENCE mit einem neuen Härtegrad pulverisiert. IMMINENCE (Facebook) haben mit „Heaven In Hiding“ ein sehr ausgereiftes Album erschaffen, dass konzeptionell sehr gut umgesetzt wurde. Ihr Sound hat etwas ganz eigenes. Dies liegt unter anderem daran, dass Sänger Eddie Berg neben den Vocals den Sound noch mit seiner Violine bereichert. Es ist ein rundum stimmiges Album, das auf viele Arten ein ergreifendes emotionales Erlebnis darstellt. Damit wird es dem Hörer auf beeindruckende Weise nachhaltig im Gedächtnis bleiben. (Review)

Modern Metal

EYES WIDE OPEN

stellen mit ihrem neuen Album „Through Life And Death“ erneut unter Beweis, dass sie zur Oberliga des Modern Metal zählen. Nicht nur Prügelei, sondern auch Musik mit einem Gefühl für packende Melodien haben sich EYES WIDE OPEN auf die Fahnen geschrieben. EYES WIDE OPEN (Facebook) beherrschen diese Kombination einwandfrei, um sich in die Herzen der Fans zu spielen. Der Song „Devastation“ hat mich dabei besonders beeindruckt. Der Song ist ein Killer und beeindruckt neben der brutalen Dynamik mit fantastischen Hooks und einem kraftvollen Chorus. (Review)

TRIVIUM mit „In The Court Of The Dragon“

TRIVIUM legen sich nicht auf die faule Haut. Es ist noch gar nicht so lange her, dass TRIVIUM (Facebook) das Album „What The Dead Men Say“ herausgebracht haben. Das war nämlich am 24.04.2020. Unglaublich, dass sie jetzt schon wieder das neue Album „In The Court Of The Dragon“ rausgeprügelt haben. . Hemmungslose Angriffe mit einem ausgeklügeltem Konzept werden Euch immer wieder eindrucksvoll um die Ohren geballert. Hier wird alles andere als stumpf drauflosgedroschen, sondern auf höchstem Niveau unterhalten. TRIVIUM beherrschen die Mischung aus gnadenloser brutaler Jagd in Verbindung mit vortrefflicher Melodik und epischen Refrains wie gewohnt perfekt. Progressive Metal

ACOLYTE

stammen aus Australien. ACOLYTE (Facebook) haben einen außergewöhnlichen Sound für sich geschaffen. Dies liegt nicht nur an ihrem fantastischen Keyborder David Van Pelt, der aus seinen Keybords wahnsinnig geile Sounds zaubert. Zusammen mit allen anderen in der Band gelingt es verschiedene kunstvolle Arrangements und extravagante Klangwelten zu formen, die sich angenehm vom Standard abheben. Hierbei ensteht eine Welt voller Emotionen, die von Verlust, Trauer und Depression geprägt ist, aber auch von Hoffnung und Kampfeswillen. Insofern spiegeln die konzeptionellen Songs das Gefühlslabyrinth einer Person wieder, die mit einem tragischen Verlust leben und umgehen muss. Es ist ein emotionales Kaleidoskop und eine Art musikalisches Ballett. Die Musik ist anmutig und emotional ausdrucksstark. Wie beim Ballett erfordert dies viel Gefühl, aber auch Kraft und Koordination. Es ist eine spannende Verbindung von klassischer und moderner Interpretation des Progressive-Metal. (Review)

LOCH VOSTOK

aus Schweden machen es den Schubladendenkern nicht leicht, denn was LOCH VOSTOK (Facebook) in ihrer musikalischen Vielfalt darstellen ist nämlich eine ganze Menge und so könnte neben der o.g. Kategorisierung auch die Bezeichnung Avantgarde- bzw. Experimental-Metal ganz gut zutreffen. „The Great Escape“ ist ein Wahnsinnsalbum! LOCH VOSTOK zeigen sehr eindrucksvoll, wie man Elemente zu einem Ganzen verbindet, die eigentlich unvereinbar scheinen. Sie haben eine höchst spannende musikalische Geschichte geschrieben, wobei die Schreibfeder mit viel Raffinesse und künstlerischem Geschick geführt wurde. Es ist nicht immer der leichte Weg, den LOCH VOSTOK gehen, wenn sie zwischen den Extremen hin und herspringen. Doch genau dies macht auch den Reiz des Albums aus. Außerdem muss ich Jonas Radehorn, der als Sänger neu eingestiegen ist, mal wirklich ein großes Lob aussprechen. Der macht einen hervorragenden Job! (Review)

WITHERFALL mit „Curse Of Autumn“

WITHERFALL (Facebook) sind für mich einfach das Maß aller Dinge, was energiegeladenen Progressive Metal angeht. Wie man an den beiden vorherigen Alben erkennen kann, hat der Progressive Metal die vielseitigsten Erscheinungsformen. WITHERFALL spielen dunkel angehauchten melodischen Metal mit ausgefeiltem und progressivem Songwriting. Die Progressivität ergibt sich nicht nur aus den teils überlangen komplexen Songs, sondern auch dadurch, dass sich WITHERFALL insgesamt eine schöne Bandbreite des Metals bieten. Das reicht von Melodic-Metal über Thrash-Metal bis hin zu eingängigem klassischen Heavy-Metal. Dabei kommt es auch mal zu theatralischen Momenten. WITHERFALL zeigen sich ausgefeilter, pfiffiger und facettenreicher denn je. Dies trifft auch auf den Gesang von Joseph zu, der meiner Meinung nach auf diesem Album noch mehr von seiner mannigfaltigen Kunst darbietet. Der technische Level ist bei WITHERFALL ohnehin in allen Bereichen unglaublich hoch. In „METALHEAD’s Top List 2021 – Part 2“ the sounds get a lot harder. The categories Thrash Metal, Doom Metal, Metalcore and Progressive Metal are presented. Have fun!

Thrash Metal

This year there were a lot of albums from this category. Since we at ‚metal-heads.de‘ have already tried to pick out the best albums anyway, the selection here was particularly difficult.

NECRONOMICON

are an old institution in the German Metal business. „The Final Chapter“ is an album made to measure and mercilessly follows the previous album „Unleashed Bastards“ and even adds to it. Already with the last album strong enduring neck muscles were in demand, when the furious NECRONOMICON (Facebook) sound sweeps over you. NECRONOMICON (Facebook) unleash a demonic hellfest with „The Final Chapter“. (Review / Interview with Freddy) Let’s go a step further with…

EVILE

from England take a more classic approach, but no less aggressive. The sound immediately reminds me of the old days of traditional pure Thrash Metal. EVILE (Facebook) unleash the thrash metal monster with barbaric vehemence. EVILE have injected the album with ideas so that despite the fundamentally destructive concept, it doesn’t just thrash along monotonously. Ben Carter tears apart his shooting gallery in a true frenzy like an angry Chuck Norris .It is noticeable that he sometimes uses the hi-hats or cymbals more dominant or more often and thus provides special accents. In addition, relentless riffs are smashed and a bunch of damn horny solos whirled by Ol Drake. „Hell Unleashed“ lets the madness run wild and pulverizes everything in its path in a fit of creative aggressive frenzy with classic Thrash Metal. BONDED

come from Germany. Right in my neighborhood BONDED (Facebook) are beating brutal Thrash Metal. But the sound is more sinister than EVILE. They smash it just raw and bloody in your face. Friends of good old Thrash culture will have a lot of fun here. The songs of BONDED are written with rage in the heart and go with their criticism relentlessly and unmistakably to the point. The German forge was intensively put under fire. BONDED brings pure hard steel to glow and forged on the anvil the weapon „Into Blackness“, which is brutally sharp and strikes mercilessly. BONDED slaughter with 11 killer songs mercilessly through your ears. (Review)

FLOTSAM & JETSAM with „Blood In The Water“

The experienced men from the cult band FLOTSAM & JETSAM (Homepage, Facebook) almost never disappoint. It has more the appearance that they really want to know it again. „Blood In The Water“ is technically and in case of songwriting the ultimate listening experience. FLOTSAM & JETSAM hurl Thrash Metal into the modern age without losing any of its vehemence and energy. Apart from that I love this awesome voice of Eric A. Knutson, who for me is undisputedly one of the best. With „Blood In The Water“ FLOTSAM AND JETSAM surpass themselves and create a monument. FLOTSAM AND JETSAM not only rely on unrestrained thrashing, but pair the songs with dreamlike melodic chords and vocal lines that wrap themselves around the auditory coils like hot glowing molten metal with punchy power and get permanently stuck in the brain. DOOM METAL

MARIANAS REST

from Finland lift a true DEATH DOOM highlight out of the black sea with their work „Fata Morgana“. Sometimes it breaks over you with tons of weight, to ensnare you in other moments with a feather-light cover. The music spins her threads skillfully and so fascinatingly that you are quickly woven into the world of MARIANAS REST(Facebook). A captivating interplay of beguiling weightless melodies and brute crushing outbursts. Thereby a fascinating aura surrounds the songs. From monumental to minimalist, from brute to fragile, from vehement to melodic, simply everything is represented. Let this bittersweet delicacy melt in auditory pleasure and take it in with all your senses! SWALLOW THE SUN mit „Killing Moons“

SWALLOW THE SUN  (Facebook) pull us into an emotional abyss with their new album „Killing Moons“, which has become more difficult to digest than the last album and may make access difficult for some. But this album is nevertheless a masterpiece. With „Moonflowers“ SWALLOW THE SUN have outdone themselves and created the most atmospherically dense and gripping work of their career. But be warned: It is addictive! And as Raivio himself said:

„An album must touch, create emotions.“

And that’s exactly what the album does! The album carries a heavy emotional load and, despite its sadness, acts as a cleansing of the mind. Of course, these are just my humble feelings about this album. Everyone has to make their own journey with this album, letting impressions and sensations sink in. But I can promise you that it will be a moving and unforgettable journey. This symbiosis of melodic tender despair and vulnerability with the merciless sinister hardness of emotional outbursts is moving and fascinating. (Review)

Metalcore

ARCHITECTS

give themselves more reciprocally on the new album than on the predecessor. „Holy Hell“ was characterized by rabid anger and aggressiveness. „For Those That Wish To Exist“ has more calm and many melodic phases, which, however, could already be heard on „Holy Hell“, such as the string ensemble and the melodic vocal lines. So if you are a purist metalcore fan of the previous album, you might not like it that much, though, because here the sound moves away from Metalcore sometimes. The brute outbreaks in the sound and in the vocals, which are blasted at the listener, must not be renounced. ARCHITECTS (Facebook) live out their penchant for melodies with „For Whose That Wish To Exist“. 

What you have to give ARCHITECTS credit for is the fact that they didn’t try to go the safe way and copy the previous album. They have taken things from it, developed further without forgetting its roots. This is a tightrope walk that is difficult to master. I personally think that ARCHITECTS have managed this brilliantly. A remarkable balancing act between vehemence and emotion that sometimes breaks out of the Metalcore corset. (Review)

IMMINENCE with „Heaven In Hiding“

The Swedes have made true what they promised with their first single „Temptation“. This incredible song is one of the best I’ve heard this year. „Temptation“ is a hard-hitting monster song that pulverizes IMMINENCE’s previous sound standards with a new level of heaviness. IMMINENCE (Facebook) have created a very mature album with „Heaven In Hiding“ that is conceptually very well executed. Their sound has something very unique. This is due, among other things, to the fact that singer Eddie Berg enriches the sound with his violin in addition to the vocals. It is an all-around coherent album that is a poignant emotional experience in many ways. Thus, it will remain in the listener’s memory in an impressive way. (Review)

Modern Metal

EYES WIDE OPEN

prove once again with their new album „Through Life And Death“ that they belong to the upper league of Modern Metal. Not only beating, but also music with a feeling for gripping melodies is the passion for EYES WIDE OPEN (Facebook). They master this combination perfectly to play themselves into the hearts of the fans. The song „Devastation“ has particularly impressed me. The song is a killer and impresses besides the brutal dynamics with fantastic hooks and a powerful chorus. (Review)

TRIVIUM mit „In The Court Of The Dragon“

TRIVIUM (Facebook) are more than hardworking. It’s not so long ago that TRIVIUM released the album „What The Dead Men Say“ in April last year. Unbelievable that they have beaten out now already again the new album „In The Court Of The Dragon“. Here unrestrained attacks with a sophisticated concept are always impressively banged around your ears. The songs are everything else than bluntly thrashed on, but entertained on the highest level. TRIVIUM master the mixture of merciless brutal hunt in connection with excellent melodic and epic choruses as usual in captivating form.

Progressive Metal

ACOLYTE

come from Australia. ACOLYTE (Facebook) have created an extraordinary unique sound. This is not only due to their fantastic keyboarder David Van Pelt, who conjures up insanely awesome sounds from his instruments. Together with all the others in the band they manage to form various artful arrangements and extravagant soundscapes that pleasantly stand out from the standard. The result is a world full of emotions, which is characterized by loss, sadness and depression, but also by hope and the will to fight. In this respect, the conceptual songs reflect the emotional labyrinth of a person who has to live and deal with a tragic loss. It is an emotional kaleidoscope and a kind of musical ballet. As with ballet, this requires a lot of feeling, but also strength and coordination. It is an exciting combination of classical and modern interpretation of Progressive Metal.

LOCH VOSTOK

from Sweden do not make it easy for the pigeonholers, because what LOCH VOSTOK (Facebook) represent in their musical diversity is quite a lot. „The Great Escape“ is an amazing album! LOCH VOSTOK show very impressively how to combine elements into a whole that actually seem incompatible. They have written a most exciting musical story, the pen being wielded with great finesse and artistic skill. It is not always the easy path that LOCH VOSTOK take when they jump back and forth between extremes. But this is exactly what makes the album so appealing. Also, I really have to give a big shout out to Jonas Radehorn, who joined as a new vocalist. He does an excellent job! (Review)

WITHERFALL with „Curse Of Autumn“

WITHERFALL (Facebook ) are for me simply the kings of energetic Progressive Metal. As you can see from the two previous albums, Progressive Metal has the most versatile manifestations. WITHERFALL play dark-tinged melodic Metal with sophisticated songwriting. The progressiveness comes not only from the sometimes overlong complex songs, but also from the fact that WITHERFALL offer themselves an impressive range of Metal overall. This ranges from melodic Metal to Thrash Metal to catchy classic Heavy Metal. Thereby it comes also sometimes to theatrical moments. WITHERFALL show themselves more polished, smart and multifaceted than ever. This also applies to the vocals of Joseph, who in my opinion presents even more of his manifold art on this album. The technical level of WITHERFALL is incredibly high in all areas anyway. Thrash-Metal

von einer alten Institution im deutschen Metal-Business, deren Anfänge bis in die 80´er Jahre zurückreichen, nämlich die guten alten Thrash-Metaller von NECRONOMICON (Facebook, Homepage ). Freddy als Gründer und Kopf der Band hat sich durch die Jahrzehnte gekämpft, was ihm gerade zu Anfang nicht leicht gemacht wurde. Ihm zur Seite steht sei 2013 Marco Lohrenz als Bassist. Für das aktuelle Album gab es noch mal eine Neubesetzung an der Schießbude durch Rik „Roundcat“ Charron aus Kanada und an der Leadgitarre durch Glen Shannon. Zusammen haben sie das Album „The Final Chapter“ erschaffen, was sie am 26.03.2021 über El Puerto Records der Hölle entsteigen lassen.

„The Final Chapter“

Wer sich angesichts des Titels bei dem langen Bestehen der Band fragt, ob es das letzte Album sein wird, dem sei das Interview bei `metal-heads.de´ans Herz gelegt. Vollalarm

Furioser und wilder kann man in ein Album nicht einsteigen. „I´m The Violence“ schreddert Euch in Grund und Boden. Hier werden die Pforten der Hölle durch die explosive Entladung pulverisiert und es ist Vollalarm angesagt. Da gerät sogar der Höllenfürst in Verzückung, schwingt die Hufe und lässt die Hörner kreisen.

NECRONOMICON treten mit dem neuen Gitarristen Glenn Shannon an und der scheint selber besessen zu sein, so wie er die Gitarre heulen lässt. Sein schnelles alarmartiges Leadgitarrenspiel lässt die Töne nur so durch Euch hindurchfahren und dieses Temperament wird Euch auf dem gesamten Album begleiten.

Der neue Drummer Rik „Roundcat“ Charron verprügelt die Felle mit seiinen Höllenstöcken und treibt den Sound zusammen mit dem Basser Marco mit der Wucht eines wütenden Stieres nach vorne. Dabei setzt er beim Drumming neue Akzente im Sound, oder kurz gesagt:

Rik gibt den Kick!

Die charakteristische Stimme von Freddy erkennt man sofort und komplettiert das ganze Szenario wie immer vortrefflich. Rau, fies und schmutzig! So muss es sein!

„Wall Of Pain“

lässt es mit markanten rockigeren Riffs krachen, was nicht minder druckvoll daherkommt. Das fetzt! Geschickte Rhythmuswechsel lassen den Song zu einer irren Fahrt werden, die mit einem ausladenden höllisch geilen Instrumentalpart veredelt wird, wo Glen Shannon wieder eindrucksvoll sein Können unter Beweis stellt.

Ruhe

ist eigentlich ein Fremdwort für NECRONOMICON, aber mitunter zieht es Freddy mal ein wenig in sphärische Ebene. Stellvertretend dafür steht „Spilling Blood“ als Halbzeittrack fängt zurückhaltend düster melancholisch an. Natürlich bleibt das nicht so, denn energiegeladene Ausbrecher sind selbstverständlich vorhanden. Aber der Song spielt insgesamt in einer melodischeren Liga. Dabei ist der stimmungsvolle Mitsingpart mit seinem „Ohohhohhooooooo“ bestens für den nächsten Live-Gig geeignet.

Der stimmungsvolle Track „The Stormreaper“ am Ende geht auch noch mal in eine ähnliche Richtung und Glen kann sich noch mal richtig austoben.

Ansonsten ist Hetzjagd angesagt!

Oft verschwimmen die Grenzen zum Heavy-Metal oder Power-Metal, was recht erfrischend rüberkommt. „World On Fire“ ist dabei so ein verdammter Kracher, der hinten raus noch mal richtig die Sau rauslässt. „The Unnamed“ startet furios melodisch, startet dann rockig durch und entwickelt sich einem galoppierenden Wildpferdherde, die durch Riks kerniges Drumming angetrieben wird. Dieses lässt sich ebenso beim Track „Me Against You“ bewundern, der es Euch unerbittlich besorgt. Die visuelle Umsetzung ist dabei entsprechend schonungslos.

Fazit

NECRONOMICON entfesseln mit „The Final Chapter“ ein dämonisches Höllenfest. Das ganze wird roh und blutig serviert, ganz ohne Salat und sonstige Beilagen. Feuriger erfrischender Thrash-Metal, wie man sich ihn wünscht! „The Final Chapter“ ist dafür gemacht die Welt heimzusuchen und Seelen einzufangen.

Thrash-Metal

from an old institution in the German metal business, whose beginnings go back to the 80’s, namely the good old thrash metallers from NECRONOMICON (Facebook, Homepage ). Freddy as the founder and head of the band has fought his way through the decades, which was not made easy for him, especially at the beginning. Marco Lohrenz has been at his side as bassist since 2013. Now Rik „Roundcat“ Charron from Canada joined the band on drums and Glen Shannon on lead guitar. Together they have created the album „The Final Chapter“, which they will release on 26.03.2021 via El Puerto Records.

„The Final Chapter“

is an album made to measure and follows on mercilessly from the previous album „Unleashed Bastards“ and even goes one better. Even with the last album, strong, enduring neck muscles were needed when the furious NECRONOMICON sound sweeps over you.

Full alert

You can’t get into an album more furious and wild. „I’m The Violence“ shreds you to the ground. Here, the gates of hell are pulverised by the explosive discharge and full alert is announced. Even the King of Hell goes into raptures, swings his hooves and lets his horns circle.

NECRONOMICON are joined by new guitarist Glenn Shannon and he seems to be possessed himself, the way he makes the guitar howl. His fast alarm-like lead guitar playing makes the notes just run through you and his temperament will accompany you throughout the album.

The new drummer Rik „Roundcat“ Charron beats the drumskins with his infernal sticks and, together with bassist Marco, drives the sound forward with the force of a raging bull. At the same time, he sets new accents in the drumming, or to put it briefly:

Freddy’s characteristic voice is immediately recognisable and, as always, completes the whole scenario excellently. Rough, nasty and dirty! That’s how it has to be!

„Wall Of Pain“

lets it rip with striking rock riffs, which is no less powerful. It shreds! Clever rhythm changes turn the song into a crazy ride, which is refined with an expansive, hellishly cool instrumental part, where Glen Shannon once again impressively demonstrates his skills.

Silence

is actually a foreign word for NECRONOMICON, but sometimes Freddy is drawn to spherical levels. The half-time track „Spilling Blood“ is representative of this and starts off in a reserved, gloomy and melancholic way. Of course, it doesn’t stay that way, because energetic breakouts are of course present. But the song plays in a more melodic league overall. The atmospheric sing-along part with its „Ohohhohhooooo“ is perfectly suited for the next live gig.

The atmospheric track „The Stormreaper“ at the end also goes in a similar direction and Glen can really let off steam again.

Otherwise, it’s a hustle!

Often the borders to heavy metal or power metal blur, which comes across quite refreshing. „World On Fire“ is one of those bloody bangers that really lets off steam at the end. „The Unnamed“ starts furiously melodic, then takes off rocking and develops into a galloping herd of wild horses, driven by Rik’s pithy drumming. This can also be admired on the track „Me Against You“, which gives it to you relentlessly. The visuals are correspondingly ruthless.

Result

NECRONOMICON unleash a demonic hellfest with „The Final Chapter“. The whole thing is served raw and bloody, without any salad or other side dishes. Fiery refreshing thrash metal, just the way you want it! „The Final Chapter“ is made to haunt the world and set souls on fire.

MH: Hallo Freddy! Bevor wir uns eingehend mit NECRONOMICON (Facebook, Homepage ) und dem neuen Album „The Final Chapter“ beschäftigen, möchte ich zu Beginn kurz abschweifen in eine vergangene Zeit der Filmgeschichte. Wenn ich das Wort NECRONOMICON höre, muss ich immer wieder an den Horrorfilm „Tanz Der Teufel“ aus dem Jahre 1981 denken. Dieser Film hat Kultstatus, nicht zuletzt, weil er lange auf dem Index stand. Das Buch der Hölle namens „Necronomicon“ spielte dabei eine Schlüsselrolle. Ein dummer Mensch las in einer einsamen Waldhütte daraus vor, öffnete dadurch die Pforten der Hölle und entfesselte die Dämonen. Den Rest kann man sich denken.
Kennst Du diesen Film und war er eine Inspiration für Eure Gründung im Jahre 1985?

Freddy: Hallo erstmal und vielen Dank für das Interview. Ja, ich kenne den Film. Zu seiner Zeit mega brutal und echt heftig. Ich weiss noch, wie unser damaliger Bassist und Gründungsmitglied Lala den Film aus der Videothek anschleppte. Obwohl wir noch nicht Volljährig waren, bekam er den Film, weil er dort jobbte. Axel, unser damaliger Schlagzeuger und Gründungsmitglied, kam auf die „ glorreiche“ Idee der Namensgebung. Ich war nie so richtig glücklich mit dem Namen, weil er zu lang ist und auch für den ein oder anderen zu „kompliziert“ in der Aussprache….aber wir wollten ja unbedingt einen Namen, der nicht alle Klischees in dieser Musikrichtung bedient. Das wir aber, auch was die Namensrechte angeht, so damit zu kämpfen hätten; das wäre uns nie in den Sinn gekommen. Aber es ist nun mal so und irgendwie hat der Name ja auch Strahlkraft.

Vom Punk zum Thrash-Metal

Ursprünglich waren wir eine Punk Band, die Lala, Axel und ich 1982 als Total Rejection gründeten. Wir waren Punks; durch und durch. Kein Irokese war zu hoch, keine Hosen zu löchrig, keine Lederjacke, die nicht mit Nieten und Buttons bestückt war. Und natürlich mussten wir auch Musik machen, und zwar auch recht erfolgreich. Wir spielten auch im damaligen legendären AZ in Freiburg, wo Bands wie GBH, EXPLOITED oder BAD BRAINS auftraten. Wir produzierten dann ein Demo, um uns bei den großen Punk Labels zu bewerben. Lustigerweise bekamen wir aber reihenweise Absagen, weil wir zu „heavy“ klangen. Ein Label bot uns an, uns unter Vertrag zu nehmen, aber nur, wenn wir die Songs noch mal punkiger aufnehmen. Ich wollte das nicht !!!

So gründeten wir mit Jogi NECRONOMCION. Bands wie EXPLOITED und DISCHARGE ( aus dem Punk Genre) und METALLICA und SLAYER haben mich ganz stark beeinflusst.

KISS am Klavier

MH: Was hat damals Deine Dämonen entfesselt? Oder anders ausgedrückt: Was hat damals Deine Lust an gitarrenlastiger Musik geweckt?

Freddy: Ich habe schon mit 12 Jahren angefangen Gitarre und Klavier zu spielen. Ich war (und bin es immer noch ) der größte KISS Fan, den es damals wohl gab….hahahaha. Ich weiss noch, wie ich meinen Gitarrenlehrer und auch die Klavierlehrerin damit nervte, KISS-Songs spielen zu können und am Klavier war es natürlich der Song „Beth“.

Die zweite große Liebe war dann VAN HALEN und mit „ Running with the Devil“ eines meiner absoluten Lieblingssongs.

Meine ersten Schallplatten von KISS waren „KISS“, „Hotter than Hell“ und „Destroyer“, die ich mir alle 3 im Plattengeschäft kaufte. Ich war also schon sehr früh ein Fan der härteren Musik……

Die geilen 80´er

MH: Die 80´er Jahre waren musikalisch gesehen eine sehr besondere und prägende Dekade.
Wie haben Dich die 80´er Jahre geprägt?

Freddy: Die 80er waren einfach unfassbar schön; mit all den guten und den schlechten Erfahrungen. Aber gerade die Erfahrungen die man damals als Jugendlicher machte, waren auch für das Leben prägend. Ob das die Musik war oder die erste Liebe. Der tägliche Zoff mit meinen Eltern als Punk oder auch die Gesellschaft, gegen die man ja auch rebellierte. Die Schule, die darunter litt. All das sind Dinge, auf die ich heute auch etwas „neidvoll“ zurück blicke. Da war wirklich jeden Tag immer irgendwas anderes mit neuen Erfahrungen.

Jung und naiv=großer Fehler

Auch in der Musik. Wir unterzeichneten damals bei GAMA Rec. Der größte Fehler den wir ja machten. Unser Werdegang ist ja hinlänglich bekannt. GAMA war das Label, welches sich nach 3 Tagen bei uns meldete, als wir das Demo an alle üblichen Labels versandten. Ich weiß noch, als ich den Telefonhörer abnahm und Herr Garatoni, einer der beiden Labelbosse, mir einen halbstündigen Vortrag ohne Punkt und Komma hielt, daß wir unbedingt bei Ihnen unterschreiben müssen. Und wir müssen sofort nach Kirchheim Teck kommen, um das unter Dach und Fach zu bringen. Wir haben uns derart beeinflussen lassen, dass wir tatsächlich am nächsten Tag ins Auto stiegen, um dann vor Ort und ohne den Vertrag richtig zu lesen bzw. zu verstehen, unterschrieben haben. Man setzte uns im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes die Pistole auf die Brust. Und wir waren gerade mal 18 Jahre und völlig naiv.

Ende und Neubeginn

Eigentlich wollte ich ja abwarten, wie die Resonanz auf unser Demo ausfallen würde und ob sich eventuell noch andere Labels (auch Noise) melden würden. Auch sagten wir unseren Eltern nichts von diesem Deal, die sicherlich sofort interveniert und darauf bestanden hätten, den Vertrag mal prüfen zu lassen. Umso schneller mussten wir dann ins Gama eigene Studio in Kirchheim Teck, um an einem ( -1- ) Tag !!!! die komplette Scheibe einzuspielen, um tags darauf dann den Mix und das Mastering machen zu können. Es folgten dann noch 2 weitere Alben, bis wir kündigten und somit alle Rechte am Namen, an den Songs und alles was damit verbunden ist, zu verlieren. Wir existierten quasi nicht mehr.

Das zog sich dann über mehrere Jahre, bis uns ein guter Anwalt aus Freiburg soweit rausboxte, dass wir wieder unter dem Namen NECRONOMICON auftreten durften. Ich glaube es gibt nicht viele Bands, die das von sich erzählen können :-)) Wenn ich es heute betrachte, muss ich auch ab und zu mal schmunzeln.

Musik als Passion

MH: Du hast eine lange Zeit, auf die Du zurückblicken kannst. Und es lief nicht immer alles
glatt. Es gab den einen oder anderen herben Rückschlag für NECRONOMICON, vor allem
was die Zusammenarbeit mit dem o.g. Label angeht. Eine Sache, die vielleicht sogar Eurer Karriere sehr nachhaltig geschadet hat.
Wo hast Du trotzdem immer wieder die Energie und Motivation hergenommen zu kämpfen und weiterzumachen? Wer hat Dich dabei unterstützt?

Freddy: Natürlich ist so ein Werdegang alles andere als normal und natürlich kommt man mal an einen Punkt, wo du nicht mehr weiter weißt und am liebsten alles hinschmeißen würdest.
ABER:
Ich mache schon seit Kindesalter Musik und sehr früh auch die harte Variante. Und trotz all der Widrigkeiten, die du angesprochen hast und die ja hinlänglich bekannt sind, so habe
ich doch nie ans Aufhören gedacht. Es lief halt in den Anfangsjahren mal nicht so, wie wir uns das alle vorgestellten.
Ich habe aber immer zu all meinen Bandkollegen im Laufe der Jahre gesagt:

„Glaubt an die Band! Glaubt daran, daß irgendwann mal der Zeitpunkt kommt, wo wir die Ernte einfahren.“

Und jammern ist da der schlechteste Ratgeber. Ich habe diesen
Gedanken immer stringent verfolgt. Und natürlich ist es auch für all die Kollegen, die jemals
bei NECRONOMCION gespielt haben, nicht leicht gewesen. Aber in dieser Branche brauchst
du auch Durchhaltevermögen und den Glauben an dich selbst. Und ganz ehrlich; vielleicht gäbe es uns gar nicht mehr, wenn alles glatt gelaufen wäre. So hast du immer den
Gedanken, den Wunsch, das Ziel: Hey, da kommt noch was! Das Buch der Band
NECRONOMCION hat viele unbeschriebene Seiten.

„The Final Chapter“=Ende?

MH: Letztlich können wir uns alle für Deine/Eure Hartnäckigkeit und den Enthusiasmus
bedanken, denn so kamen wir über die Zeit in den Genuss hervorragender Alben. Euer
letztes Album „Unleashed Bastards“ war ebenfalls ein Megabrett und kam bei den Fans
sehr gut an. Nun ist das neue Album „The Final Chapter“ am Start!
Der Albumtitel impliziert etwas Endgültiges, sozusagen das Ende von einer Geschichte.
Ist es ein Hinweis darauf, dass es Euer letztes Album ist? (Was sehr sehr schade wäre…)

Verlustbewältigung

Freddy: Um ehrlich zu sein, hatte ich letztes Jahr den Gedanken ans Aufhören Noch diese Scheibe und dann ist Schluss….Und was kann passender nicht sein, als das Album „ The Final Chapter „ zu nennen; das letzte Kapitel der Band.
Ich konnte mich einfach nicht mehr motivieren. Ich hatte das schrecklichste Jahr meines
Lebens. Innerhalb von 2 Tagen verlor ich meine Eltern durch Corona und auch ich hat te damit zu kämpfen. Das legt dich erst einmal lahm; auch was die geplanten Aufnahmen des neuen Albums angingen. Wir hatten zum Glück die Drums im Dezember 2019 aufgenommen und so konnten wir dann, nachdem ich den Schock einigermaßen verdaut hatte (obwohl das wohl nie richtig gehen wird ) im August dann endlich fortsetzen.

Ursprünglich wollten wir das Album ja im April 2020 fertig haben; zum Europatourneestart. Aber da ging es uns ja wie allen Anderen auch. Nichts ging mehr. Wir werden sehen, was das neue Album bringt. Ich hoffe da auch sehr stark auf die Unterstützung vom Label. Die abgesagte Europatournee wird sobald sich die Lage da draußen verbessert, sofort nachgeholt und dann werden wir sehen. Komplett aufhören kann ich sowieso nicht, dafür bin ich zu sehr Musiker und liebe dieses Art der Musik auch viel zu sehr. Und wir werden sehen, was das Jahr 2021 und 2022 so bringt….! Aber das Album ist auch irgendwie ein Neuanfang. Ein neues Kapitel mit Rik und Glen. Die Jungs hätten es allemal verdient.

Frischer Wind

MH: Musikalisch schließt sich „The Final Chapter“ dem Vorgänger an. Der Sound ist typisch
NECRONOMICON. Es geht wieder erbarmungslos nach vorne mit klassischem Thrash-
Metal. Grundsätzlich hat sich am kraftvoll wirbelnden und druckvollen Sound nichts
verändert. NECRONOMICON kommen mir allerdings noch enthemmter und
angriffslustiger vor. Mir persönlich ist z.B. aufgefallen, dass die Leadgitarre erheblich
verspielter und wilder auftritt und auch abseits der Solos mehr Raum bekommt. Das
macht richtig Alarm und verleiht dem Sound einen noch stürmischeren Charakter.
Wie kam diese Entwicklung zustande?
Ist das dem neuen Gitarristen Glen Shannon zu verdanken?

Freddy: Das Songwriting obliegt zu 100% mir. Ich kreiere sozusagen das Gerüst der einzelnen Songs, so dass aber jeder genug Freiraum innerhalb dieses Konstrukts bekommt, damit er seine Ideen für sein Instrument einfließen lassen kann. Das hat auch dieses mal hervorragend geklappt.
Für mich war es eine komplett neue Erfahrung, wie NECRONOMCION mit den beiden Jungs
aus Nord-Amerika klingt. Sowohl das pulsierende Schlagzeugspiel von Rik als auch die
Gitarrenarbeit von Glen sorgen für mächtig frischen Wind.

Rik und Glen

Dies ist vor allem Riks Drumming geschuldet. Ich kannte ihn ja schon vorher, da er uns auf der Europatournee 2018 mit seiner Band DARK MINISTRY supportete und ich dort schon völlig fasziniert von seiner Interpretation des Schlagzeug spielen war. Er hat mir dort schon angeboten, falls mal „Not am Manne“ sei, würde er sofort einspringen. Das dies dann so schnell gehen würde, hätte ich natürlich nicht gedacht. Da aber Chris immer mehr Probleme mit seinem Knie und den Gelenken bekam und er mir unter Tränen beichtete, dass er keine Tourneen oder mehrere Konzerte mehr am Stück spielen könne, musste ich eine Entscheidung treffen.

Ich rief dann Rik an, der sofort zusagte und auch das neue Album „ The Final Chapter„ einspielte. Durch ihn lernten wir auch Glen kennen, der sich ebenfalls als ein Glücksgriff bewahrheitete. Es war sehr interessant und spannend zu hören, wie Glen meine Songs als Lead-Gitarrist verarbeiten und spielen würde. NECRONOMICON hat durch die Jungs ein völlig neues, musikalisches Kleid bekommen, was uns glaube ich sehr gut zu Gesicht steht. Wir klingen internationaler , nicht mehr so typisch „ Deutsch“ , was nicht despektierlich klingen soll, da wir immer noch eine deutsche Thrash-Metal-Band sind. Aber vor allem sind Rik und Glen auch menschlich ganz feine Jungs und beide hatten auch riesigen Spaß an der Produktion, die Corona bedingt ja völlig anders produziert werden musste.

Neue Wege

MH: Die Welt ist einem ständigen Wandel unterzogen und auch persönlich gewinnt man laufend neue Eindrücke und entwickelt sich. Jede Band verbindet daher mit jedem ihrer Alben etwas bestimmtes, denn jedes Album entsteht in einer anderen Zeit unter anderen Umständen.
Wie schätzt Du das neue Album ein? Worauf können sich die Fans einstellen?

Freddy: Als erstes ist sofort zu hören, dass das Schlagzeug nicht mehr den typischen Thrash- Metal-Rhythmus hat. Rik fragte mich noch , ob er denn freie Hand hätte oder er sich den Vorgängern anpassen muss. Ich sagte nur : „Feuer frei, mein Guter! Und baller alles raus, was du drauf hast!“

Auch Glen solle sich nicht an Andi orientieren, der ja sehr melodiös und fast schon zu kommerziell die Lead Gitarre interpretierte. Glen hat diese „ dreckige“ auch manchmal unkonventionelle Art, die ich so noch nie bei NECRONOMICON hörte. Mein Gesang kommt auch ganz anders rüber, obwohl ich da nicht viel verändert habe.

Besonderheiten

MH: Welche Veränderungen oder Besonderheiten waren Dir beim Songwriting wichtig?

Freddy: Ich habe Zeit meines Lebens immer versucht, die Musik zu machen und zu schreiben, die ich selbst gerne hören oder spielen würde. Das soll jetzt bitte nicht falsch verstanden oder gar arrogant rüber kommen. Ich bin sehr sehr schlecht im Kopieren oder Nachspielen anderer Songs oder Bands. Das bekomme ich einfach nicht hin. Ich bewundere manchmal die Leute, die dir von der oder jener Band die Solis oder den Rhythmus 1 zu 1 covern können. Deshalb hole ich mir meine Ideen vor allem aus Filmen oder auch Serien. Da genügt oft eine prägnante Melodie, aus der ich dann einen kompletten Song mache. Das praktiziere ich schon immer so, um auch möglichst nicht mit vergleichen anderer Bands konfrontiert zu werden.

Ich denke unsere Fans honorieren das auch, da ich öfters auch von der schreibenden Zunft die Aussage bekomme, dass NECRONOMCION nicht nur immer voll auf die Glocke sind, sondern durchaus auch rockige Songs oder gar Balladen aufbieten können. Das muss natürlich nicht jedem Gefallen, aber das ist nun mal mein eigener und persönlicher Musikstil. Und genau das wollte ich auch wieder auf dem neuen Album erreichen. Ich hoffe ja, es ist mir gelungen….

MH: Verbindest Du mit einem Song etwas Persönliches oder ist Dir ein Thema des Albums besonders wichtig?

Freddy: Corona bedingt mussten wir, was die Aufnahmen angeht, kreativ sein. Die Rhythmusgitarren und den Bass haben wir bei Marco, meinem Bassisten zu Hause aufgenommen. Er hat zum Glück ein kleines Heimstudio und da war das kein Problem, da wir das bei den letzten Scheiben genauso praktiziert haben. Beim Gesang machten wir ein Experiment: Ich habe einen recht großen Wandschrank und da produzierten wir dann die Gesangaufnahmen. Achim gab mir den Tip und es funktionierte gigantisch gut :-)) Glenn nahm ebenfalls bei sich zu Hause die Lead-Gitarre auf. Achim bekam dann im September die ganzen Files und ging dann ans mischen und Mastern. Deshalb ist dieses Album an sich schon was ganz Besonderes und hat seine ganz persönliche Geschichte. Es half mir auch sehr, das letzte Jahr zu verarbeiten.

Kaputte Welt?

MH: Die Texte sind dystopisch und beschäftigen sich mit den Schattenseiten des Lebens und der Menschen. Wenn man auch die aktuelle globale Situation anschaut, scheint die Welt vom Virus „Chaos“ infiziert zu sein. Viele Bands haben Krieg, Zerstörung und den alltäglichen Wahnsinn als Thema. Musik ist ja auch oft ein Spiegel des aktuellen Zeitgeschehens. Das neue Video von Eurem Song „Me Against You“ bringt das ebenfalls schonungslos zum Ausruck.

Ist die Welt so „im Arsch“, dass es keine anderen Themen mehr gibt? Sind Wut, Frustration, Wahnsinn und Gewalt die bestimmenden Faktoren unserer Welt?

Freddy: Die Texte sind düsterer als sonst. Da ich oft Metaphern in den Lyrics verwende oder mit Metaphern arbeite, habe ich diesmal das Thema „ Tod“ sehr stark fokussiert. Dies ist sicherlich auch eine gewisse Verarbeitung der Geschehnisse letzten Jahres.
Gerade was die Lyrics angeht, sind wir noch immer sehr am Punk orientiert, d.h. oft sozialkritisch. Ich beschäftige mich mit dem Zeitgeschehen; was so alles schreckliches und Furchtbares in der Welt passiert. Das verarbeite ich dann. Bei dieser Scheibe könnte man fast schon sagen, die Texte sind ein „ Horrormärchen für Erwachsene“. Aber im Moment könnte man wirklich sagen: die Welt ist in keinem guten Zustand.

Hoffnungen

MH: Aktuell wurden und werden in einem noch nie dagewesenen Ausmaß unsere Grundrechte eingeschränkt. Das soziale und kulturelle Leben wurde zum Stillstand gebracht und vermutlich wird erst einmal nichts so sein wie es vorher war.
Wie siehst Du die Zukunft? Wird sich unser Leben wieder jemals normalisieren? Waren die alten Zeiten doch besser oder einfach nur anders?

Freddy: Das ist gar nicht mal so leicht zu beantworten. Man hofft natürlich, dass sich alles mal wieder normalisiert…und das muss es auch wieder, da vor allem auch die Musikindustrie völlig am Boden ist. Wir leiden ALLE und kämpfen ums nackte Überleben; vor allem finanziell gesehen. Die Regierung hat bzgl. des Impfvorgangs sicherlich nicht den besten Job gemacht. Wir brauchen jetzt weltweit eine Durchimpfung, damit sich die Lage drastisch ändert; zum Positiven natürlich.

Eine solche Pandemie ist eine Jahrhundertkatastrophe und evtl. vergleichbar mit der Spanischen Grippe Anfang des Jahrhunderts. Aber das zeigt uns wieder mal die Grenzen auf, zumal diese Pandemie von Menschenhand gemacht ist und nur das Ergebnis unserer Lebensweise und der Umgang mit unserem Planeten und Umwelt ist.
Ich sage schon lange: Der Mensch ist ähnlich wie das Virus, oder sogar schlimmer. Er zerstört alles um sich herum, ohne dabei an die Konsequenzen zu denken. Hoffen wir mal auf das Gute, um wenigstens mit ein bisschen mehr Hoffnung in die Zukunft zu blicken.

„The Evil Dead“

MH: Hello Freddy! Before we delve into NECRONOMICON (Facebook, Homepage ) and the new album „The Final Chapter“, I would like to start by briefly digressing into a bygone era of film history. When I hear the word NECRONOMICON, I always have to think of the horror film „The Evil Dead“ from 1981. This film is cult, not least because it was on the Index for a long time. The book of hell called „Necronomicon“ played a key role in it. A stupid man read from it in a lonely forest cabin, thereby opening the gates of hell and unleashing the demons. You can guess the rest.
Do you know this film and was it an inspiration for your foundation in 1985?

Freddy: Hello and thank you very much for the interview.

Yes, I know the movie. It was mega brutal and really violent in its time. I still remember how our bass player and founding member Lala brought the film from the video store. Although we were not yet of age, he got the film because he worked there. Axel, our drummer and founding member at the time, came up with the „glorious“ idea of naming the band. I was never really happy with the name, because it is too long and for some people too „complicated“ in pronunciation….but we really wanted a name that didn’t serve all the clichés in this music genre. It would never have occurred to us that we would have to struggle with it, also with regard to the rights to the name. But that’s the way it is and somehow the name has a certain appeal.

From Punk to Thrash-Metal

Originally we were a punk band that Lala, Axel and I formed in 1982 as TOTAL REJECTION. We were punks; through and through. No mohawk was too high, no trousers too holey, no leather jacket that wasn’t studded and buttoned. And of course we had to make music, and quite successfully too. We also played at the then legendary AZ in Freiburg, where bands like GBH, EXPLOITED or BAD BRAINS performed. We then produced a demo to apply to the big punk labels. Funnily enough, we got a lot of rejections because we sounded too „heavy“. One label offered to sign us, but only if we recorded the songs more punky. I didn’t want that !!!

So we founded NECRONOMCION with Jogi. Bands like EXPLOITED and DISCHARGE (from the punk genre) and METALLICA and SLAYER influenced me a lot.

KISS at the piano

MH: What unleashed your demons back then? Or to put it another way: What awakened your desire for guitar-heavy music back then?

Freddy: I started playing guitar and piano when I was 12. I was (and still am) the biggest KISS fan there was back then….hahahaha. I remember bugging my guitar teacher and also the piano teacher to be able to play KISS songs and on the piano it was of course the song „Beth“.

The second great love was then VAN HALEN and with “ Running with the Devil“ one of my absolute favourite songs.

My first records by KISS were „KISS“, „Hotter than Hell“ and „Destroyer“, all 3 of which I bought in the record shop. So I was a fan of the harder music very early on……

The awesome 80’s

MH: The 80’s were a very special and formative decade musically.
How did the 80’s shape you?

Freddy: The 80s were simply unbelievably beautiful; with all the good and the bad experiences. But the experiences you had as a young person were also formative for your life. Whether it was music or the first love. The daily quarrels with my parents as a punk or rebellion against society. The school, which suffered as a result. These are all things that I look back on with envy today. Every day there was always something different with new experiences.

Young and naive=big mistake

Also in music. Back then, we signed with GAMA Rec, which was the biggest mistake we made. Our career is well known. GAMA was the label that contacted us after 3 days when we sent the demo to all the usual labels. I still remember when I picked up the phone and Mr. Garatoni, one of the two label bosses, gave me a half-hour lecture without full stops that we absolutely had to sign with you. And we have to come to Kirchheim Teck immediately to get it wrapped up. We let ourselves be influenced to such an extent that we actually got into the car the next day and then signed on the spot and without reading or understanding the contract properly. They literally put a gun to our heads. And we were only 18 years old and completely naive.

End and new beginning

Actually, I wanted to wait and see how the response to our demo would be and whether other labels (including Noise) would get in touch. We also didn’t tell our parents about this deal, who would certainly have intervened immediately and insisted on having the contract checked out. All the faster we had to go to Gama’s own studio in Kirchheim Teck to record the complete album in one ( -1- ) day !!!! in order to be able to do the mixing and mastering the next day. Two more albums followed until we quit and thus lost all rights to the name, the songs and everything connected with them. We practically no longer existed.

This dragged on for several years until a good lawyer from Freiburg got us out so far that we were allowed to perform under the name NECRONOMICON again. I don’t think there are many bands who can say that about themselves :-)) When I look at it today, I have to smile from time to time.

Music as passion

MH: You have a long time to look back on. And it hasn’t always been
smoothly. There were one or two bitter setbacks for NECRONOMICON, especially with the
especially concerning the cooperation with the above-mentioned label. A thing that may even have damaged your career in a very lasting way.
Where did you find the energy and motivation to fight and continue? Who supported you in this?

Freddy: Of course, such a career is anything but normal and of course you reach a point where you don’t know what to do and would like to give up everything.
BUT:
I’ve been making music since I was a child, and very early on hard guitar style. And despite all the adversities you mentioned, which are well known, I have never thought about quitting.
In the early years, things just didn’t work out the way we all imagined.
But I have always said to all my band mates over the years:

„Believe in the band! Believe that one day the time will come when we will reap the
reap the harvest.“

And complaining is the worst advisor. I have always pursued this idea stringently. And of course it hasn’t been easy for all the colleagues who have ever played in
who have ever played with NECRONOMCION. But in this business you also need
you also need stamina and belief in yourself. And honestly, maybe we wouldn’t even exist anymore if everything had gone smoothly. So you always have the
the wish, the goal: Hey, there’s still something to come! The book of the band

„The Final Chapter“=The End?

MH: In the end, we can all thank you for your persistence and enthusiasm. because that’s how we’ve been able to enjoy excellent albums over time. Your album „Unleashed Bastards“ was also a mega album and was very well received by the fans. very well. Now the new album „The Final Chapter“ is out!
The album title implies something final, the end of a story, so to speak. Is it a hint that this is your last album? (Which would be a great pity…)

Freddy: To be honest, I had the thought of quitting last year. One more record and then it’s over….And what could be more fitting than to call the album „The Final Chapter“; the last chapter of the band.

Dealing with loss

I just couldn’t motivate myself anymore. I had the most terrible year of my
of my life. Within 2 days I lost my parents to Corona and I was struggling too. That paralyses you at first; also with regard to the planned recordings of the new album. Luckily, we had recorded the drums in December 2019 and so, after I had digested the shock to some extent (although that will probably never really work), we could finally continue in August.

Originally we wanted to have the album ready in April 2020, for the start of the European tour. But then we were like everyone else. Nothing worked out. We’ll see what the new album brings. I also hope very much for the support of the label. The cancelled European tour will be made up for as soon as the situation out there improves, and then we’ll see. I can’t stop completely anyway, I’m too much of a musician and love this kind of music too much. And we’ll see what the year 2021 and 2022 brings….! But the album is also somehow a new beginning. A new chapter with Rik and Glen. The boys certainly deserve it.

Fresh breeze

MH: Musically, „The Final Chapter“ follows the predecessor. The sound is typical
NECRONOMICON. It goes mercilessly forward again with classic Thrash-
metal. Basically nothing has changed in the powerful whirling and powerful sound.
changed. However, NECRONOMICON seem to me even more uninhibited and
more aggressive. I personally noticed that the lead guitar is much more playful and wild.
and wilder and also gets more space apart from the solos. This really gives the sound an even more stormy character.
How did this development come about?

Freddy: The songwriting is 100% mine. I create the framework of the individual songs, so to speak, but everyone gets enough freedom within this construct so that they can let their ideas for their instrument flow in. That worked out very well this time too.
For me it was a completely new experience how NECRONOMCION sounds with the two guys from North America. Both the pulsating drumming of Rik and the guitar work of
guitar work of Glen provide a mighty breath of fresh air.

Rik & Glen

This is mainly due to Rik’s drumming. I knew him before because he supported us on the European tour 2018 with his band DARK MINISTRY and I was already completely fascinated by his interpretation of drumming. He already offered me there that if there was ever a „need for a man“, he would step in immediately. Of course, I would never have thought that this would happen so quickly. But since Chris was having more and more problems with his knee and joints, and he told me in tears that he would no longer be able to tour or play several concerts at a time, I had to make a decision.

I then called Rik, who immediately agreed and also recorded the new album „The Final Chapter“. Through him we also met Glen, who also turned out to be a stroke of luck. It was very interesting and exciting to hear how Glen would process and play my songs as lead guitarist. NECRONOMICON has got a completely new musical dress through the guys, which I think suits us very well. We sound more international, no longer so typically „German“, which is not meant to sound disrespectful, as we are still a German thrash metal band. But above all, Rik and Glen are also great guys and both had a lot of fun with the production, which had to be produced completely differently due to Corona.

New ways

MH: The world is constantly changing and also personally you are constantly gaining new impressions and developing. That’s why every band associates something specific with each of its albums, because each album is created in a different time under different circumstances.
How do you rate the new album? What can the fans expect on „The Final Chapter“?

Freddy: The first thing you hear is that the drums no longer have the typical thrash metal rhythm. Rik asked me if he had a free hand or if he had to adapt to his predecessors. I just said: „Fire away, man! And bang out everything you’ve got!“

Special features

MH: What changes or special features were important to you in the songwriting?

Freddy: Throughout my life, I have always tried to make and write the music that I would like to hear or play myself. This is not meant to be misunderstood or arrogant. I am very, very bad at copying or reproducing other songs or bands. I sometimes admire the people who can cover the solos or the rhythm 1 to 1 from this or that band. That’s why I get my ideas mainly from films or series. Often a concise melody is enough, and then I make a complete song out of it. I’ve always done it that way so that I don’t have to compare it to other bands.

I think our fans also appreciate this, because I often get the statement from the writing guild that NECRONOMCION are not only always full throttle, but can also offer rock songs or even ballads. Of course, that doesn’t have to please everyone, but that’s my own personal style of music. And that’s exactly what I wanted to achieve on the new album. I hope I have succeeded….

MH: Do you associate something personal with a song or is a theme of the album particularly important to you?

Freddy: Due to Corona, we had to be creative with the recordings. We recorded the rhythm guitars and the bass at Marco’s, my bass player, house. Luckily he has a small home studio and that was no problem, as we did the same with the last records. For the vocals we did an experiment: I have a quite big closet and that’s where we produced the vocal recordings. Achim gave me the tip and it worked gigantically well :-)) Glenn also recorded the lead guitar at home. Achim got all the files in September and then went to mixing and mastering. So this album is very special in itself and has its own personal story. It also helped me a lot to process the last year.

Broken world?

MH: The lyrics are dystopian and deal with the dark side of life and people. If you also look at the current global situation, the world seems to be infected by the virus „chaos“. Many bands have war, destruction and everyday madness as their theme. Music is also often a mirror of current events. The new video of your song „Me Against You“ also expresses this relentlessly.

Is the world so „fucked up“ that there are no other issues left? Are anger, frustration, madness and violence the determining factors of our world?

Freddy: The lyrics are darker than usual. Since I often use metaphors in the lyrics or work with metaphors, I have focused very strongly on the theme of „death“ this time. This is certainly also a certain processing of the events of last year.
Especially as far as the lyrics are concerned, we are still very punk-oriented, i.e. often socially critical. I deal with what’s going on nowadays; what’s happening in the world that’s so terrible and horrible. I then process that. With this record, you could almost say that the lyrics are a „horror fairytale for adults“. But at the moment you could really say: the world is not in a good state.

Hopes

MH: Currently, our fundamental rights have been and are being restricted to an unprecedented extent. Social and cultural life has been brought to a standstill and probably nothing will be the same for a while.
How do you see the future? Will our lives ever return to normal? Were the old times better or just different?

Freddy: That’s not so easy to answer. Of course, one hopes that everything will return to normal…and it has to, because the music industry in particular is completely down. We are ALL suffering and struggling to survive, especially financially. The government has certainly not done the best job regarding the vaccination process. We need a worldwide vaccination now so that the situation changes drastically; for the better, of course.

Such a pandemic is a catastrophe of the century and possibly comparable to the Spanish flu at the beginning of the century. But this shows us once again the limits, especially since this pandemic is man-made and only the result of our way of life and the way we treat our planet and environment.
I have been saying for a long time: Man is similar to the virus, or even worse. He destroys everything around him without thinking of the consequences. Let’s hope for the good, so that we can at least look to the future with a little more hope.
