SWALLOW THE SUN (Facebook) sind zu einer Macht im Doom Metal aufgestiegen und können bereits auf eine langjährige Karriere zurückblicken. Nun ist es wieder soweit! Ihr neues Album „Moonflowers“ wird Euch am 19.11.2021 in eine andere Welt einladen. Ob ihr der Einladung folgen solltet, werdet Ihr hier bei ‚metal-heads.de‘ erfahren.

Die intime intensive Anziehungskraft

offenbart sich dem Hörer bereits nach wenigen Augenblicken. Ich bin direkt gefesselt und mit jeder weiteren Sekunde tauche ich tiefer in die Welt von SWALLOW THE SUN ein. „Moonflowers Bloom On Misery“ lädt Euch mit sanften Tönen und zartem Gesang in eine Welt voller Traurigkeit ein. Ich folge gerne dieser Einladung und entschwinde in einem melodischen Nebel, der vor mir emporsteigt und sich vor mir ausbreitet. Ich atme den Nebel ein, die Welt um mich herum verblasst während sich die Seele der Musik in mir ausbreitet. Zarter gefühlvoller Gesang mit einer warmen Aura paart sich mit einer zurückhaltenden Instrumentierung, in die sich traurige Violinen einschmeicheln. Man gerät ins träumen…

Doch dann werde ich plötzlich brutal gepackt und die Klauen eines Dämons scheinen mich zu zerfetzen. Wow! Was für eine Wendung in diesem Song, die mich völlig unvorbereitet trifft. So unerwartet kann das Schicksal im Leben auch im Leben zuschlagen. Ohne Vorwarnung brechen massive brutale Riffs hervor und martialische Growls lassen meine Seele erzittern. Einfach nur irre! Fantastisch gemacht und das melodische Grundthema mit den Streichern geht nicht verloren.

Ein wahnsinnig intensive Erfahrung, der von dem Hörer Besitz ergreift. Meine Liebe zu diesem Album wurde umgehend mit diesem Song entfacht. Und ich hoffe, dass die folgenden Songs das Feuer nicht mehr zu löschen vermögen.

Faszinierend und überwältigend!

Meine Liebe zu diesem Album endet glücklicherweise nicht mit dem ersten Song, sondern das Feuer ergreift mein Herz mit jedem weiteren Song. Die erste Single „Woven Into Sorrow“ zeichnet eine Landschaft mit düsteren Farben, aber diese Landschaft ist so wunderschön, dass man ihr gar nicht mehr entfliehen möchte. Man lässt sich nur noch fallen und auch hier nimmt der Song ab der fünften Minute eine dramatische Wendung.

Unfassbar,

was SWALLOW THE SUN hier erschaffen haben. Diese Symbiose der melodischen zarten Verzweiflung und Verletzlichkeit mit der gnadenlosen finsteren Härte emotionaler Ausbrüche ist ergreifend und faszinierend. Die Musik umhüllt Euch wie dichte Nebelschleier in einer Vollmondnacht. Schön und doch irgendwie geheimnisvoll und unheimlich. Denn das Album ist getränkt mit einer schweren emotionalen Last, welche Gitarrist und Songwriter Juha Raivio immer noch zu tragen hat. (Im Jahr 2016 verlor er seine geliebte Frau an das schreckliche Monster einer Krebserkrankung.) Die Wunden sind tief und bluten für lange Zeit. Innere Dämonen nähren sich von dem Blut der Wunden Schmerz, Traurigkeit und Verzweiflung. Der Kampf dagegen ist kein einfacher.

Mit Blut

im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes wurde das Album erschaffen. Das mystische Cover ist ein ganz persönliches Werk von Songwriter Juha Raivio. Die Blumen auf dem Cover sind selbst gesammelt und getrocknet worden. Und den okkulten roten Blutmond hat Juha mit seinem eigenen Blut gemalt. Das hat schon einen (tragisch) magischen Charakter sich durch sein eigenes Blut mit dem musikalischen Werk zu verbinden. Aber gerade das ist es, was das Album so fantastisch macht. Es ist eine innige Umarmung von Sänger Juha Raivio. Er öffnet seinen Geist und teilt auf intime Art und Weise seine Gefühlswelt mit den Liebhabern der Musik. Und Sänger Mikko Kotamäki krönt dieses Unterfangen mit seinem überwältigenden Gesang. Beim tiefen gefühlvollen Song „All Hallow’s Grief“ wird dies noch in einem dramatischen Duett mit Cammie Gilbert (Oceans Of Slumber) auf die Spitze getrieben.

Der Verlust eines geliebten Menschen ist schwer zu bewältigen. Er hinterlässt Narben auf der Seele, die nie so richtig verheilen. Für Raivio ist die Musik wahrscheinlich der Versuch, den Schmerz der Narben zu lindern, indem er seine Gefühle in die Musik transferiert, bevor die Dämonen seine Seele verzehren. Das lodernde Feuer der Schmerzen, der Trauer und auch der Wut herauslassen, anstatt sie einzusperren, so dass sie einen von innen heraus verbrennen würden.

Juha Raivio sagt selber über das Album:

Sehr wohl weiß ich, dass ich das nicht sagen sollte, aber ich hasse dieses Album zutiefst. Ich hasse es, wohin es mich führt, wie es mich fühlen lässt, und was es für mich bedeutet. Ich wünschte, es würde es nicht tun. Aber bei aller Ehrlichkeit habe ich keine andere Wahl als es auch zu lieben. Das ist sowieso das Einzige, was für mich bei der Musik zählt. Es spielt keine Rolle, wie sie mich fühlen lässt, solange sie es tut!

Emotionale Abgründe

tun sich also bei dem Album auf. Der Kampf mit den inneren Dämonen, die immer wieder versuchen die verletzte und geschwächte Seele in den Abgrund zu ziehen. Dies zeigt sich auch in dem tristen Video von dem Song „Enemy“, der die Einsamkeit und Trostlosigkeit perfekt einfängt. Der gebrochene einsame Mensch ohne Halt, der im strömenden Regen der Traurigkeit seinen Weg geht und immer wieder von dämonischen Klauen bedroht wird und letztlich den Kampf verliert. Kein schönes versöhnliches Ende.

„Enemy“ legt brachial los und geht im folgenden eine Symbiose mit schaurig schönen Melodien ein. Das triste Video in dunklen Optik steckt voller Symbolik und transportiert die Stimmung des Songs hervorragend.

Fazit

Mit „Moonflowers“ haben sich SWALLOW THE SUN selbst übertroffen und das atmosphärisch dichteste und packendste Werk ihrer Karriere erschaffen. Aber seid gewarnt: Es macht süchtig! Und wie Raivio selbst sagte: Ein Album muss berühren, Emotionen erschaffen. Und genau das tut das Album! Das Album trägt eine schwere emotionale Last und wirkt trotz seiner Traurigkeit wie eine Reinigung des Geistes. Das sind natürlich nur meine bescheidenen Empfindungen bei diesem Album. Jeder muss seine eigene Reise mit diesem Album machen und dabei Eindrücke und Empfindungen auf sich wirken lassen. Aber ich kann Euch versprechen, dass es eine bewegende und unvergessliche Reise werden wird.

Nehmt Euch gute Kopfhörer, macht beispielsweise einen Spaziergang durch Wald und Flur bei Dunkelheit. Das ist die richtige Atmosphäre, um solche Musik zu hören. Nichts für zwischendurch. Man muss für solche Musik Zeit haben, um sich fallenzulassen und sie fühlen zu können.

Eines noch…. Man sollte sich überlegen, ob man sich nicht die limitierten Editionen gönnen möchte, um tatsächlich den ganzen Weg zu gehen. Denn Juha Raivio komponierte für die Songs auch rein instrumentale sinfonischen Arrangements, die von der finnischen Streichergruppe Trio NOX in einer mittelalterlichen Kirche in Sipoo, Finnland, eingespielt wurden.

SWALLOW THE SUN (Facebook) have risen to a power in Doom Metal and can already look back on a long career. Now the time has come again! Their new album „Moonflowers“ will invite you to another world on 19.11.2021. If you should follow the invitation, you will find out here at ‚metal-heads.de‘.

The intimate intense attraction

reveals itself to the listener after just a few moments. I am directly captivated and with each additional second I dive deeper into the world of SWALLOW THE SUN. „Moonflowers Bloom On Misery“ invites you with soft tones and delicate vocals into a world full of sadness. I gladly accept this invitation and disappear in a melodic mist that rises and spreads in front of me. I breathe in the mist, the world around me fades away while the soul of the music expands inside me. Delicate soulful singing with a warm aura pairs with a restrained instrumentation, in which sad violins ingratiate themselves. One gets into dreaming…

But then suddenly I am brutally grabbed and the claws of a demon seem to tear me apart. Wow! What a twist in this song that catches me completely off guard. This is how unexpectedly fate can strike in life. Without warning, massive brutal riffs burst forth and martial growls make my soul tremble. Simply crazy! Fantastically done and the melodic basic theme with the strings is not lost.

An insanely intense experience that takes possession of the listener. My love for this album was immediately ignited with this song. And I hope that the following songs will not be able to extinguish the fire.

Fascinating and overwhelming!

My love for this album fortunately doesn’t end with the first song, but the fire grabs my heart with each subsequent song. The first single „Woven Into Sorrow“ draws a landscape with gloomy colors, but this landscape is so beautiful that you don’t want to escape from it at all. You just let yourself fall and also here the song takes a dramatic turn from the fifth minute on.

Unbelievable,

what SWALLOW THE SUN have created here. This symbiosis of melodic tender despair and vulnerability with the merciless sinister hardness of emotional outbursts is moving and fascinating. The music envelops you like thick veils of mist on a full moon night. Beautiful and yet somehow mysterious and eerie. For the album is soaked with a heavy emotional burden, which guitarist and songwriter Juha Raivio still has to carry. (In 2016 he lost his beloved wife to the horrible monster of cancer). The wounds are deep and bleed for a long time. Inner demons feed on the blood of the wounds pain, sadness and despair. The fight against them is not an easy one.

With blood

in the true sense of the word, the album was created. The mystical cover is a very personal work of songwriter Juha Raivio. The flowers on the cover were collected and dried by himself. And the occult red blood moon was painted by Juha with his own blood. This already has a (tragically) magical character to connect with the musical work through his own blood. But this is exactly what makes the album so fantastic. It is an intimate embrace of singer Juha Raivio. He opens his mind and shares in an intimate way his emotional world with the lovers of music. And singer Mikko Kotamäki crowns this endeavor with his stunning vocals. On the deep soulful song „All Hallow’s Grief“ this is taken to the extreme in a dramatic duet with singer Cammie Gilbert (Oceans Of Slumber).

The loss of a loved one is difficult to cope with. It leaves scars on the soul that never really heal. For Raivio, music is probably an attempt to ease the pain of the scars by transferring his feelings into music before the demons consume his soul. Letting out the blazing fire of pain, sadness and also anger instead of imprisoning them so that they would burn you from the inside out.

Juha Raivio himself says about the album:

Very well I know I shouldn’t say this, but I hate this album deeply. I hate where it takes me, how it makes me feel, and what it means to me. I wish it didn’t. But in all honesty, I have no choice but to love it too. That’s the only thing that matters to me about music anyway. It doesn’t matter how it makes me feel as long as it does!

Emotional abyss

open up with the album. The struggle with the inner demons that try again and again to pull the wounded and weakened soul into the abyss. This is also shown in the dreary video of the song „Enemy“ with his dark visuals and symbolism, which perfectly captures the loneliness and desolation. The broken lonely man without a foothold, who goes his way in the pouring rain of sadness and is repeatedly threatened by demonic claws and ultimately loses the battle. Not a nice conciliatory ending.

„Enemy“ sets off brute and enters into a symbiosis with eerily beautiful melodies in the following.

Conclusion

With „Moonflowers“ SWALLOW THE SUN have outdone themselves and created the most atmospherically dense and gripping work of their career. But be warned: It is addictive! And as Raivio himself said: An album must touch, create emotions. And that’s exactly what the album does! The album carries a heavy emotional load and, despite its sadness, acts as a cleansing fire of the mind. Of course, these are just my humble feelings about this album. Everyone must make their own journey with this album, letting impressions and sensations sink in. But I can promise you that it will be a touching and unforgettable journey.

Take good headphones, for example, take a walk through the woods and meadows in the dark. That is the right atmosphere to listen to such music. Nothing for in between. You have to have time for such music, to let yourself fall and feel it.

One more thing…. One should consider treating oneself to the limited editions to actually go all the way. That’s because Juha Raivio also composed purely instrumental symphonic arrangements for the songs, which were recorded by the Finnish string group Trio NOX in a medieval church in Sipoo, Finland.
