Die weltweite Metalszene ist produktiv und vielseitig. Das versuchen wir mit unseren Newsbeiträgen bei metal-heads.de abzubilden. Von den großen und etablierten Bands bis zu den hoffnungsvollen Newcomern stellen wir euch eine Mischung zusammen, um die Bandbreite der Szene darzustellen. Loslegen wollen wir heute mit der Institution aus Schweden: EVERGREY. Die Herrschaften haben ein neues Studioalbum namens „Architects of the new wave“ für den 05.06.2026 für ein Release über Napalm Records angekündigt. Als Kostprobe gibt es jetzt schon den Song „The world is on fire“ und der gefällt mir richtig gut – bitte sehr:

TELOMYRAS sind eine fünfköpfige Heavy Metal Combo aus Seattle. Ja, dort gibt es nicht nur Grunge. Die Band plant die Veröffentlichung ihres Debütalbums „Duskfall!“ für den 08.05.2026 und mit „Witch“ spielt man uns jetzt einen der neun enthaltenen Songs vor:

Die Herrschaften von VOIVOD haben ja schon ein paar Jahrzehnte auf dem Kerbholz. Mehr als 40 Jahre sind es bereits. Da bringt man nicht einfach nur ein weiteres Studioalbum raus. Nein, man tut sich mit dem Symphonieorchester aus dem kanadischen Quebec zusammen und gibt ein entsprechendes Konzert. Das Live-Footage – es sind ein Dutzend Tracks, inklusive der PINK FLYOD-Coverversion zu „Astronomy domine“ – gibt es ab dem 05.06.2026 als CD oder Doppel-LP, dazu noch in verschiedenen farbigen Ausführungen. Dann werden wir noch mal progressiv und wenden unseren Blick nach Zypern. Dort ist die Prog Metal Band JOAKEM beheimatet. Wann das neue Studioalbum in den Handel kommen soll, ist noch nicht bekannt. Aber es gibt jetzt schon mal einen ersten Vorgeschmack auf das zukünftige Release des Vierers – hier kommt „Origins“:

Willkommen bei „METALHEADs Top List 2021 – Teil 3“! Dieser Teil geleitet Euch in noch extreme und finstere Welten. Hier traut sich nicht jeder hin. Das ist etwas für die ganz hartgesottenen Metalfans.

Extreme Metal

Natürlich sind einige Richtungen des Metal schon ziemlich extrem. Und doch gibt es Bands, die lassen sich nicht einem der Subgenres zuordnen. Diese Bands vereinen in ihrem Sound nämlich mehrere extreme Spielarten, so dass man diese Bands nur unter dem Begriff Extreme Metal einordnen kann.

XAEL

aus den U.S.A. sind extrem in jeder Hinsicht. XAEL (Facebook)haben sich für ihre Musik ein eigenes Universum erschaffen. Es geht um den ewigen Kampf von Dynastien, menschliche und göttliche. Dabei ist die Musik harter Tobak und nicht leicht verdaulich. Dies zeigt auch ihr Album „Bloodtide Rising“, welches eine zerstörende Arie verkörpert, die der Naturgewalt eines schweren Unwetters gleicht. Es rollt wie ein Hurricane über Euch hinweg, nimmt Euch auseinander und lässt Euch in Einzelteilen zurück. Vor der Leistung des Schlagzeugers Joshua Nassaru Ward kann man nur den Hut ziehen. Das ist schon Hochleistungssport in der Schießbude. Akkorde und Rhythmen wechseln ihre Persönlichkeit immerfort und bauen sich zu einem progressiven Monster auf. Wahrhaftig können XAEL nicht nur die finstersten und brutalsten Fantasien Wirklichkeit werden lassen. Nein, sie brillieren zwischendurch mit einem Gespür für Melodien.

GHOSTS OF ATLANTIS

sind auf ihrem Album „3.6.2.4.“ etwas harmonischer unterwegs. Es ist eine Mischung aus Melodic Death und Black Metal mit symphonischen Einlagen. Allerdings wird der Gesang hier häufiger auch in cleaner melodischer Form dargeboten. GHOSTS OF ATLANTIS (Facebook) schmettern den Dreizack mit aller Gewalt in die Erde und lassen die Welt, einem gewaltigen Seebeben gleich, erzittern. „3.6.2.4“ ist ein mächtiges kolossales Album, dass Euch garantiert beindrucken wird. Es gibt auf dem Album keine Ausfälle, nur Monstertracks. Man wird von der gewaltigen Soundkulisse förmlich überwältigt. GHOSTS OF ATLANTIS kreieren reichhaltige Soundlandschaften gleich einem pompösen Kinoblockbuster. Alles wirkt wohldurchdacht, abwechslungsreich und doch homogen. Es ist eine interessante Mischung, mit der GHOSTS OF ATLANTIS meiner Meinung nach mit dem Sound ihres Debütalbums eine eigene Nische gefunden haben. (Review)

ZORNHEYM mit „The Zornheim Sleep Experiment“

ZORNHEYM (Facebook) sind sehr vielseitig aufgestellt. Der Sound ist eine wahre Wundertüte der harten Künste und bedient sich auch symphonischer Elemente. Aber alles passt zu dem musikalischen Thema der Band und zur Geschichte und Inhalt der Alben. Wer mehr darüber wissen möchte, darf sich gerne das Interview mit Zorn durchlesen. (Interview „Faszination des Bösen“) Denn das Gesamtkonzept entspringt einer Geschichte um ein Anstalt namens „Zornheim“ und seiner nicht ganz so normalen Insassen. Zum ersten Album „Where Hatred Dwells and Darkness Reigns“ gab es zur Geschichte sogar ein Comic. Nun folgt mit „The Zornheim Sleep Experiment“ der zweite Teil der Geschichte.

ZORNHEYM bieten mit „The Zornheim Sleep Experiment“ ein extremes cineastisches Erlebnis, dass niemanden unbeeindruckt zurücklassen wird. Ein perfekt ausgearbeitetes Kunstwerk, dass mit allerlei Facetten daherkommt. Göttlichen Melodien gepaart mit einer Spur Wahnsinn und einer teils erschreckenden Brutalität schlagen sich hier nieder. Eine verdammt intensive Erfahrung voller Dramaturgie, die eine ungewöhnliche Faszination ausübt und dazu führt, dass man sich aufgrund der vielen Eindrücke und genialen Ideen das Album wieder und wieder anhört, um in die Welt von ZORNHEYM abzutauchen. Verstörend genial! (Review)

Melodic Death Metal

ORBIT CULTURE

haben zwar mit „Shaman“ nur eine EP veröffentlicht. Allerdings geschah dies bereits ein Jahr nach ihrem letzten Kracheralbum „Nija“. Man hat das Gefühl, dass ORBIT CULTURE (Facebook) gar kein durchschnittliches gutes Album machen können. Die Outputs der Band sind immer eine Klasse für sich. Dies trifft auch auf „Shaman“ zu. ORBIT CULTURE bieten nach wie vor monumentalen brachialen Melodic-Death-Metal, der in seiner Art einzigartig ist.  Der Sound ist wie gehabt kompromisslos hart. Von monstermäßigen Drums und krassem Bass, über die überragenden Riffs bis hin zu dem geilen Gesang sind ORBIT CULTURE unvergleichlich. Das gesamte auditive Gesamtkonzept bieten ein fantastisches Hörerlebnis. Das ist nicht einfach nur stumpfe Power ohne Sinn und Verstand, sondern eine geschickte soundtechnische Kriegsführung, die keinen Widerstand duldet und Euer Herz im Sturm erobert. EX DEO

haben mit “ The Thirteen Years Of Nero“ ein mächtig imposantes Album hervorgebracht. Die fette druckvolle Produktion ist für den EX DEO-Sound wie geschaffen und steigert den ohnehin schon kolossalen Charakter der Songs zu einem brutalen Erdbeben. Die Atmosphäre ist noch dichter geworden und die Abwechslung bzw. der Mut im Songwriting ist deutlich spürbar, könnte meiner Meinung nach aber noch ein wenig mutiger und ausgefallener ( wie z.B. im ersten Song „The Fall Of Claudius“) ausfallen. Die imposanten Songkohorten des Albums kämpfen sich unerschrocken in die Oberliga des Melodic-Death-Metal. So viel ist sicher! Eine imponierende Geschichtsstunde von EX DEO (Facebook), die man so schnell nicht vergessen wird und bleienden Eindruck hinterlässt. HIRAES

sind zwar noch eine junge Band, aber die Mitglieder sind schon gute alte Bekannte. Wer auf geilen melodischen Death Metal steht, dem wird die Band DAWN Of DISEASE ein Begriff sein. Leider haben sie sich aufgelöst. Doch wo ein Ende ist, ist auch meistens immer ein Neuanfang. Und dieser Neuanfang heißt HIRAES (Facebook). Akustisch gibt es ordentlich etwas vor den Latz geknallt. Britta Goertz brüllt mit finsteren Growls standesgemäß energisch drauflos. Dabei gelingt die Balance zwischen brutalen schmetternden und melodischen Parts sehr gut. Alles andere entspricht ebenfalls hohen Standards, so dass die Zeichen sehr gut für eine erfolgreiche Zukunft stehen. Mit dem feurigen Video zur ersten Singleauskopplung „Under Fire“ hat man jedenfalls nicht nur soundtechnisch alles in Flammen gesetzt. (Review)

ACT OF DENIAL mit „Negative“

ACT OF DENIAL (Facebook) sind als sogenannte Supergroup gestartet, und zwar mit folgendem Line-Up: Sänger Björn Strid (Soilwork), Gitarristen Luger (Koziak, Benighted-Cro) und Voi Cox (Koziak, Victim), Bassist Steve Di Giorgio (Death, Testament), Drummer Kerim “Krimh” Lechner (Septicflesh) and Keyboarder John Lönnmyr (The Night Flight Orchestra).

Luger (Interview) und Voi Cox haben das Projekt ins Leben gerufen. Mittlerweile wurden die sehr bekannten Gastmusiker gegen ein stabiles Line-Up ausgetauscht, um auch zukünftig live spielen zu können. Denn man kann sich denken, dass die namenhafte Erstbesetzung mit ihren eigenen Bands genug zu tun hat.

Ein Album der Superlativen! Um es mit einem kleine Wortspiel zu beschreiben: Ein Act Of Genial! Anders kann ich es nicht bezeichnen. Es gibt hier überhaupt rein gar nichts zu meckern. Von vorne bis hinten ein Killeralbum! Wer da ein Haar in der Suppe findet, der leidet wahrscheinlich an Haarausfall. An den Songs kann es jedenfalls nicht liegen. Das ist High-End-Metal, den man meiner Meinung nach nicht besser machen kann. Das ist pures explosives Dynamit, welches Eure Metalsynapsen in einem Feuerwerk hochgehen lässt. Ein Megabrett und absolute Extraklasse! (Review)

Black Metal

1914

brauche ich wohl niemandem mehr vorzustellen. Ihr Sound ist eine Mischung aus Death Metal und Black Metal. Sie widmen sich durchweg der Kriegsthematik und das in einer ernsten Art und Weise, die nichts zu beschönigen hat. Es sind zum Teil originale Überlieferungen von Soldaten, die diesen Krieg am eigenen Leib erfahren haben und die Grundlage der Songtexte bilden. 1914 setzen ihre ganz eigene Art der Geschichtsaufarbeitung mit „Where Fear And Weapons Meet“ erschreckend eindrucksvoll fort. Sie verfeinern bzw. intensivieren ihren Sound diesmal mit orchestralen Elementen, die in der richtigen Dosierung dem musikalischen Donnerwetter eine noch größere Dimension verleihen. Der Sound von 1914 ist wie der Krieg! Schonungslos und unerbittlich! (Review)

Kanonenfieber

als Ein-Mann-Projekt hatte dieses Jahr meine Aufmerksamkeit erregt, als BandCamp mir irgendwann diese Platte vorgeschlagen hatte. Das Cover von „Menschenmühle“ war schon ziemlich heftig und ich war mir nicht sicher, was mich erwarten würde. Aber was dann folgte, hatte mich echt geplättet. BLACK METAL vom allergemeinsten, und das in deutscher Sprache. Das hört man nicht alle Tage! KANONENFIEBER (Facbook) behandelt die gleiche Thematik wie 1914 und bringt musikalisch schonungslos die Schrecken des Krieges zum Ausdruck. Der Sound ist passenderweise rabiat und roh mit gnadenloser Aggressivität, verzichtet aber nicht auf gefällige Melodien.

Das Songwriting ist sehr gut gelungen. Es wird auch kein musikalischer Einheitsbrei serviert, sondern mit charakteristischen Songs eine tiefe Atmosphäre gestrickt. Dabei empfinde ich es als sehr positiv, dass man auf Anhieb viel von den Texten verstehen kann, auch wenn hier cleane Vocals nichts verloren haben. Ich kann dieses Album wärmstens jedem Black Metal Fan ans Herz legen. Ein erschreckend intensives Monsteralbum.

WINDFAERER

stammen aus Amerika. Witzigerweise wurde mir das Album „Breaths of Elder Dawns“ ebenfalls über BandCamp ans Herz gelegt. Und wieder war es eine sehr gute Empfehlung. WINDFAERER (Facebook) mischen Black Metal mit Folk-Elementen, die hier mittels einer Violine eingespielt werden. Ich habe eine Schwäche für dieses Instrument, weil es eines der Instrumente ist, die am meisten Atmosphäre erzeugen können. Tatsächlich habe ich es schon in vielen Metal-Genres gehört, aber Black Metal gehörte nicht dazu. Und auch das funktioniert! Im Falle von WINDFAERER sogar verdammt eindrucksvoll. Hier wird die Violine teilweise wie eine Gitarre eingesetzt.

Der Sound ist monumental und WINDFAERER zaubern teilweise epische Passagen hervor, die mich völlig in ihren Bann ziehen. So einen Sound habe ich noch nie gehört. Jeder muss sich dieses Album anhören, wenn er mal etwas anderen Black Metal hören möchte. Es ist eine atemberaubende Vorstellung, die WINDFAERER abliefern. Das Album hat sich quasi im letzten Moment für meine Bestenliste qualifiziert, obwohl das Album schon etwas länger auf dem Markt ist. Aber ich bin erst gestern darüber gestolpert und ich war auf Anhieb so davon überzeugt, dass ich es hier erwähnen muss. Und es hätte genauso an der Spitze stehen können. Doch letztlich ist es eine Band geworden aus dem kalten Norden.

NIGHT CROWNED mit „Hädanfärd“

NIGHTCROWNED habe mich schlichtweg umgehauen. Hier wird Black Metal mit einer vernichtenden Energie entfesselt. Diesem Sturm kann man nicht standhalten. Es ist ein eiskaltes Höllenfest mit 9 bitterschwarzen Songs. „Hädanfard“ ist moderner rifflastiger Black Metal der Sonderklasse! Ein imponierende schwarze epische Machtdemonstration! NIGHT CROWNED gehen mit unbändiger Energie zu Werke und schlagen mit aller dunkler Gewalt zu. Dabei gelingt es ihnen eine hervorragende Balance zwischen brutalen wilden Ausbrüchen und melodischen Anteilen zu erschaffen und so gelingt es Ihnen der Dunkelheit ein facettenreiches Dasein aufzuerlegen. Grundsätzlich bleibt aber der wilde durchschlagende Charakter erhalten und eben genau das ist die hohe Kunst des Ganzen. (Review)

VIKING METAL

THYRFING

Die finsteren Gesellen von THYRFING (Facebook ) aus dem nordischen Schweden haben sich ganze acht Jahre Zeit gelassen und treten nun mit ihrem neuen Longplayer „Vanagandr“ (VÖ 27.08.2021) an, um sich endlich nach dieser langen Zeit der Abstinenz mit einem Paukenschlag wieder Gehör zu verschaffen. Wir erleben hier Metal, der unheimlich wuchtig und monumental aufschlägt. Sänger Jens Rydén schreddert sich als dunkler Lord in seiner Landessprache durch die Songs und im Chorus wird mehrstimmig geschmettert.  Finstere epische Landschaften tun sich auf. Insgessamt bewegen sich die Songs meist im Midtempo-Bereich, brechen hier und da aber auch mal mit Blastbeat-Attacken aus diesem Korsett aus. Im gewaltigen Sound mischen sich symphonische Elemente ein. Hier spielen Streicher meistens die Hauptrolle. (Review / Interview )

EINHERJER mit „North Star“

EINHERJER ( Facebook ) lassen die Götter und auch `metal-heads.de´ mit ihrem neuen Album „North Star“ wieder einmal aufhorchen und bieten einen Anlass in Valhalla mal wieder richtig die Sau rauszulassen. Das Album ist im Februar erschienen und konnte sich bis zum Ende den Spitzenplatz sichern. Was mich vor allem an dem Album begeistert, ist der ungemeine Spielwitz und die Spielfreude der Band, die einem bei jedem Song entgegenschlägt. Man nehme z.B. den Song „West Coast Groove“. Der Titel impliziert es schon. Der Song hat wirklich einen giftigen Groove, der einen einfach mitnimmt und Laune macht. Dafür gibt es mit beispielsweise mit „The Blood & The Iron“ eine durchschlagende Schlachthymne par excellence geliefert. Das ist VIKING-Metal wie er leibt und lebt! (Review / Interview )

Extreme Metal

Of course, some directions of metal are already quite extreme. And yet there are bands that can not be assigned to one of the subgenres. These bands combine several extreme styles in their sound, so that these bands can only be classified under the term Extreme Metal.

XAEL

from the U.S.A. are extreme in every respect. XAEL(Facebook) have created their own universe for their music. It is about the eternal struggle of dynasties, human and divine. Thereby the music is hard stuff and not easy to digest. This is also shown by their album „Bloodtide Rising“, which embodies a destructive aria that resembles the force of nature of a heavy storm. It rolls over you like a hurricane, takes you apart and leaves you in pieces. Praise and recognition for the performance of drummer Joshua Nassaru Ward. Chords and rhythms are constantly changing their personalities and building up to a progressive monster. XAEL can not only make the darkest and most brutal fantasies come true. No, they shine in between with a flair for melodies.

GHOSTS OF ATLANTIS

are more harmonic and melodic on their album „3.6.2.4. It is a mixture of Melodic Death and Black Metal with symphonic interludes. However, the vocals are presented here more often in cleaner melodic form. GHOSTS OF ATLANTIS (Facebook) smash the trident with all their might into the earth and let the world tremble, like a mighty seaquake. „3.6.2.4“ is a powerful colossal album that is guaranteed to impress you. There are no failures on the album, only monster tracks. One is literally overwhelmed by the mighty soundscape. GHOSTS OF ATLANTIS create deep soundscapes like a pompous cinema blockbuster. Everything seems well thought out, varied and yet homogeneous. It is an interesting mixture, with which GHOSTS OF ATLANTIS have found their own niche with the sound of their debut album, in my opinion. (Review)

ZORNHEYM with „The Zornheim Sleep Experiment“

ZORNHEYM (Facebook) are very versatile. The sound is a real grab bag of hard arts and also uses symphonic elements. But everything fits the musical theme of the band and the history and content of the albums. If you want to know more about it, feel free to read the interview with Zorn (Interview „Faszination Of Evil“). Because the overall concept comes from a story about an asylum called „Zornheim“ and its crazy inmates. For the first album „Where Hatred Dwells and Darkness Reigns“ there was even a comic for the story. Now follows with „The Zornheim Sleep Experiment“ the second part of the story.

ZORNHEYM offer with „The Zornheim Sleep Experiment“ an extreme cinematic experience that will leave no one unimpressed. A perfectly elaborated work of art that comes along with all kinds of Metal facets. Divine melodies paired with a hint of madness and a partly terrifying brutality strike here. A damn intense experience full of dramaturgy, which exerts an unusual fascination and leads to the fact that one listens to the album again and again due to the many impressions and ingenious ideas to dive into the world of ZORNHEYM. Stunningly ingenious! (Review)

Melodic Death Metal

ORBIT CULTURE

have released the EP „Shaman“. However, this happened already one year after their last smash album „Nija“. I have the feeling that ORBIT CULTURE (Facebook) cannot make an average good album at all. The outputs of the band are always in a class of their own. This is also true for „Shaman“. ORBIT CULTURE still offer monumental brute melodic death metal, which is unique in its kind.  The sound is as usual uncompromisingly hard. From monster drums and killer bass, to the outstanding riffs and awesome vocals, ORBIT CULTURE are incomparable. The entire overall auditory concept provide a fantastic listening experience. This is not just dull power without sense or reason, but a skillful sound warfare that will not tolerate any resistance and will take your heart by storm (Review / Interview mit Frontmann Niklas)

EX DEO

have produced a mighty impressive album with “ The Thirteen Years Of Nero“. This fat powerful production fits perfectly to the EX DEO sound and increases the already colossal character of the songs to a brutal earthquake. The atmosphere has become even denser and the variety or courage in the songwriting is clearly noticeable, but in my opinion could still be a little bolder and more unusual ( such as in the first song „The Fall Of Claudius“). The imposing song cohorts of the album fight their way fearlessly into the upper league of Melodic Death Metal. That much is for sure! An impressive history lesson from EX DEO (Facebook), which will not be forgotten so quickly and leaves a lasting impression. HIRAES

are still a young band, but the members are already good old mates. If you like Melodic Death Metal, you will know the band DAWN OF DISEASE. Unfortunately they broke up. But where there is an end, there is always a new beginning. And this new beginning is called HIRAES(Facebook) and their new album „Solitary“. Acoustically you get a nice balance between brutal blaring and melodic parts. That succeeds very well. Britta Goertz roars with sinister growls as befits her status energetically on it. Everything else also meets high standards, so that the signs are very good for a successful future. With the hellish video for the first single release „Under Fire“, the band has set everything on fire, not only in terms of sound.(Review)

ACT OF DENIAL with „Negative“

ACT OF DENIAL (Facebook)started as a so-called supergroup with the following line-up: vocalist Björn Strid (Soilwork), guitarists Luger (Koziak, Benighted-Cro) and Voi Cox (Koziak, Victim), bassist Steve Di Giorgio (Death, Testament), drummer Kerim „Krimh“ Lechner (Septicflesh) and keyboardist John Lönnmyr (The Night Flight Orchestra).

Luger (Interview) and Voi Cox brought the project to life. In the meantime, the very well-known guest musicians have been exchanged for a stable line-up in order to be able to play live in the future. Because you can imagine that the first named line-up has enough to do with their own bands.

An album of superlatives! To describe it with a little play on words: An Act Of Genius! I can’t describe it any other way. There is absolutely nothing to complain about. From front to back a killer album! This is high-end Metal that, in my opinion, can’t be done any better. This is pure explosive dynamite, which will blow up your Metal synapses in a firework. ACT OF DENIAL nailed it! (Review)

Black Metal

1914

I probably don’t need to introduce to anyone anymore. Their sound is a mixture of death metal and black metal. They devote themselves throughout to the war theme and that in a serious way, which has nothing to gloss over. Some of the songs are original lore from soldiers who experienced this war first hand and form the basis of the song lyrics. 1914 continue their very own way of dealing with history with „Where Fear And Weapons Meet“ in a frighteningly impressive way. They refine or rather intensify their sound this time with orchestral elements, which in the right dosage give the musical thunderstorm an even greater dimension. The sound of 1914 is like war! Relentless and unrelenting! (Review)

Kanonenfieber

as a one-man project had caught my attention this year when BandCamp suggested this record to me at some point. The cover of „Menschenmühle“ was strange and I wasn’t sure what to expect. But what followed really flattered me. BLACK METAL at its best, and in German language. You don’t hear that every day! KANONENFIEBER (Facebook) deals with the same subject matter as 1914 and musically relentlessly expresses the horrors of war. The sound is fittingly raucous and raw with merciless aggression, but does not forgo pleasing melodies.

The songwriting is very well done. There is also no musical mishmash served, but with characteristic songs knitted a deep atmosphere. I find it very positive that you can understand a lot of the lyrics right away, even if clean vocals have lost nothing here. I can warmly recommend this album to every black metal fan. A frighteningly intense monster album.

WINDFAERER

come from America. Funnily enough, the album „Breaths of Elder Dawns“ was also recommended to me via BandCamp. And again it was a very good recommendation. WINDFAERER (Facebook) mix Black Metal with Folk elements, which are presented here by a violin. In fact, I have heard it in many metal genres, but black metal was not one of them. And this works as well! In the case of WINDFAERER even damn impressive. Here the violin is partly used like a guitar.

The sound is monumental and WINDFAERER conjure up partly epic passages that completely captivate me. I have never heard a sound like this before. Everyone must listen to this album if they want to hear something different Black Metal. It is a breathtaking performance that WINDFAERER deliver. The album qualified for my top list at the last moment, so to speak, even though the album has been out for a bit longer. But I just stumbled upon it a few days ago and I was so convinced of it right away that I have to mention it here. And it could just as easily have been at the top. But in the end the top place is for a band from the cold north.

NIGHT CROWNED with „Hädanfärd“

NIGHTCROWNED simply blew me away. Here Black Metal is unleashed with a devastating energy. This storm is impossible to withstand. It’s an ice cold hellfest with 9 bitter black songs. „Hädanfard“ is modern riff-heavy Black Metal in a class of its own! An imposing black epic demonstration of power! NIGHT CROWNED go to work with irrepressible energy and strike with all dark violence. They manage to create an excellent balance between brutal wild outbursts and melodic parts and thus succeed in imposing a multifaceted existence on the darkness. Basically, however, the wild resounding character remains and exactly that is the speciality of „Hädanfärd“. (Review)

VIKING METAL

THYRFING

The sinister fellows of THYRFING (Facebook ) from the Nordic Sweden have taken a whole eight years and now enter with their new output „Vanagandr“ to finally make themselves heard again with a bang after this long period of abstinence. We experience here Metal that strikes incredibly massive and monumental. Singer Jens Rydén shreds as a dark lord in his native language through the songs. Dark epic landscapes open up. Overall, the songs are mostly in the midtempo range, but break out of this corset here and there with blastbeat attacks. In the massive sound symphonic elements mix in. Strings mostly play the main role here. (Review / Interview).

EINHERJER with „North Star“

It’s time for merciless battles again. EINHERJER ( Facebook ) released „North Star“ in February and could secure the top position until the end. What I love most about the album is the band’s immense playfulness, which comes across in every song. Take the song „West Coast Groove“ for example. The title already implies it. The song really has a toxic groove that simply takes you along and makes mood. For example, „The Blood & The Iron“ is a resounding battle hymn par excellence. This is VIKING metal as it lives and breathes! (Review / Interview )

geil ist das neue Album „The Zornheim Sleep Eperiment“ von ZORNHEYM (Facebook, Bandcamp). Für mich ein ganz neues Level des METAL, denn so etwas habe ich tatsächlich noch nicht gehört. Das neue Album wird Euch am 22.10.2021 heimsuchen und ihr solltet der Anstalt `Zornheim´ auf jeden Fall einen Besuch abstatten. Gründe dafür gibt es viele. Diese könnt Ihr in dem aktuellen Review bei `metal-heads.de´ nachlesen (Link hier). Volle 10 Punkte habe ich diesem Kunstwerk verliehen, die für mich angesichts der erstklassigen innovativen Kompositionen völlig verdient sind. Zorn ist Gründer der Band. Seinen Namen hat er seinen früheren Aktivitäten in der Band DARK FUNERAL zu verdanken, wo ihm damals ein Bandmitglied den Künstlernamen verpasst hat. Aus diesem Künstlernamen ist dann der Bandnahme ZORNHEYM entstanden, sozusagen die Heimatstätte des Wahnsinns. Also lasst uns nun mit Zorn in diese dunkle Welt von ZORNHEYM abtauchen.

Das neue Kapitel von „Zornheim

MH: Die Veröffentlichung des neuen Albums „The Zornheim Sleep Experiment“ steht kurz bevor. Im Vorfeld wurden bereits die Singles „Keep The Devil Away“ und „Slumber Comes In Time“ veröffentlicht. Wie ist die Resonanz bisher? Gibt es einen Favoriten unter den beiden Songs?

Zorn: Das Feedback war bisher überwältigend. Die Leute sind begeistert, dass wir zurück sind. Viele Leute haben sich so sehr in unser erstes Album verliebt, dass sie nicht glaubten, dass wir es übertreffen könnten, aber selbst diese Leute loben das neue Album und meinen, dass es das bessere von beiden ist. Sowohl „Keep the Devil Away“ als auch „Slumber Comes in Time“ sind zwei sehr wichtige Songs, aber wenn ich einen davon auswählen müsste, würde ich mich für „Devil“ entscheiden.

Der Überraschungssong

MH: Die zweite Single „Slumber Comes In Time“ überrascht mit einem Männerchor und viel melodischer Sinfonie. Wie kam es speziell zu dieser Idee mit dem Männerchor? Das klingt ja sehr klassisch. Magst du es nicht, in ein musikalisches Korsett gezwängt zu werden?

Zorn: Die Melodie des Refrains basiert auf einer alten Volksmelodie, die die Wallonen vor einigen hundert Jahren in meine Heimatstadt brachten. Als ich mit der Arbeit an dem Lied begann, hatte ich das Gefühl, dass ich die Melodie als eine Hommage an meine Heimatstadt Finspång verwenden wollte. Da die Melodie sehr groß und episch ist, beschloss ich, dass der gesamte Teil von einem Männerchor gesungen werden sollte, um ihm Tiefe und Schwere zu verleihen! Ich denke, das Ergebnis ist einfach umwerfend. Es macht mir überhaupt nichts aus, mich in einer klassischen Landschaft aufzuhalten, im Gegenteil! Ich stehe sehr auf klassische Musik und Soundtracks im Allgemeinen. Die ganze Idee mit der Band war, sie sehr klassisch und filmisch zu gestalten. Wenn Du also denkst, dass wir klassisch klingen, dann haben wir es richtig gemacht!

Der außergewöhnliche Sound

MH: Glaubt ihr, dass ihr mit dem Sound von ZORNHEYM etwas Neues geschaffen habt? Was ist das Besondere am Sound von ZORNHEYM? Was sind die Unterschiede zum ersten Album?

Zorn: Ja, ich denke, Zornheym ist eine sehr einzigartige Band, sowohl was den Sound als auch das lyrische Gesamtkonzept angeht. Da alle unsere Alben in der Anstalt spielen werden und die Details, die in alles hineingesteckt werden. Ich glaube, das machen nicht viele Bands. Normalerweise hat eine Band ein Konzept für ein Album und geht dann zu einem anderen über. Was den allgemeinen Sound angeht, so denke ich, dass unsere Musik immer noch sehr gitarrenorientiert ist, auch wenn sie sich in ein majestätisches, symphonisches Gewand hüllt. Auch das ist einzigartig, denke ich.

Viele symphonische Bands lassen die Gitarren im Hintergrund stehen und überlassen den symphonischen Instrumenten die ganze schwere Arbeit. Die Gitarren sind der Zug in ZORNHEYMs Musik, der Zug, der alle symphonischen Waggons anschiebt. Ich glaube auch, dass wir in unserer Musik viele verschiedene Stile mischen. Meine Haupteinflüsse sind Künstler wie Blind Guardian, Dissection, Yngwie Malmsteen, Iron Maiden und Hans Zimmer. Das ergibt eine interessante Mischung, denke ich.

Auf dem neuen Album wollten wir die Chöre mehr einsetzen, indem wir sie mehr Wörter singen ließen als nur „Aa“ oder „Mm“. Sie sollten die Wörter in den Strophen ausfüllen oder wie in „Slumber“ den ganzen Refrain singen. Wir haben auf diesem Album auch einige Holzbläser eingesetzt. Das war etwas, von dem Scucca wollte, dass wir es mehr einsetzen, und wir haben es schließlich auf mindestens 3-4 Tracks verwendet. Ein weiterer großer Unterschied ist, dass wir die Streicher dieses Mal in den Wing Studios aufgenommen haben, was dem Tontechniker und Produzenten Sverker Widgren mehr Kontrolle über den Sound gab und ihn besser in den Mix integrieren konnte.

Das Orchester

MH: Das neue Album klingt mit seinen symphonischen Klängen sehr majestätisch und erweckt den Eindruck, dass diese original aufgenommen wurden. Oder sind diese Klänge doch digital erzeugt? Würden Sie immer den Originalklang eines klassischen Instruments einem digital erzeugten Klang vorziehen? Würden Sie behaupten, dass Sie den Unterschied immer hören können?

Zorn: Danke, ich finde auch, dass das Album sehr majestätisch klingt. Die Streicher sind ein echtes Quartett, das im Studio spielt. Wir hatten das Glück, Leute zu finden, die schon mit der schwedischen Philharmonie und Dimmu Borgir gearbeitet haben. Bei den Chören handelt es sich um einen Frauen- und einen Männerchor, die von Scucca aufgenommen wurden, und einige zusätzliche Aufnahmen von Bendler. Die Holz- und Blechbläser sind Samples, die Scucca mit East-West Quantum Leap und Spitfire Libraries programmiert hat. Für die Teile, in denen Steve Marschmusik auf seiner Snare spielt, haben wir eine echte Marsch-Snare über die Snare gelegt, aber der Rest des Orchesterschlagzeugs sind ebenfalls Samples aus der Dance Library.

Unser Ziel ist es, in Zukunft nur noch echte Instrumente zu verwenden. Einfach, weil es einen großen Unterschied macht. Ein gesampeltes Instrument kann nicht das Gefühl simulieren, das ein echter Interpret erreicht. Als ich hörte, was unser Streichquartett aufgenommen hatte, hatte ich Tränen in den Augen, weil es so gut gespielt und voller Emotionen war. Sie hatten die Lieder noch nie zuvor gehört und nahmen einfach die Notenblätter zur Hand und spielten sie, als hätten sie diese Stücke ihr ganzes Leben lang gespielt. Es wäre fantastisch, auf dem nächsten Album echte Blechbläser einzusetzen! Im Moment ist das noch nicht möglich.

Ursprung von `Zornheim´

MH: Der Bandname leitet sich von einer Klinik namens „Zornheim“ ab und die Songs handeln von Geschichten aus dieser Klinik. Ich weiß, dass es in Deutschland ein Dorf namens „Zornheim“ gibt. Gab es dort tatsächlich auch eine Klinik mit diesem Namen oder ist das reine Fiktion? Wie seid ihr auf diese Geschichte über Zornheim gekommen?

Zorn: Das ist alles Fiktion. Allerdings wusste ich bis vor ein paar Jahren nichts von dem Dorf. Ich habe den Namen aus der Zeit, als ich bei DARK FUNERAL war. Ich brauchte einen Künstlernamen und der damalige Sänger Nachtgarm schlug Zornheym vor, was mir gefiel. Er ist deutsch, da Nachtgarm Deutscher ist, und bedeutet so viel wie „Heimat des Zorns“. Als sich meine Wege mit Dark Funeral trennten, beschloss ich, meine eigene Band zu gründen und meinen Traum zu verwirklichen. Seit meinen frühen Teenagerjahren wollte ich immer symphonische Musik machen.

Mit Mitte 20 hatte ich auch die Idee, ein Album über eine Irrenanstalt zu machen. Ich spielte schon mit dieser Idee, bevor ich 2007 zu DEVIAN kam. Jetzt hatte ich die Chance, etwas von Grund auf neu zu beginnen und eine ganze Welt aufzubauen und die Musik zum Soundtrack dazu zu machen. Das habe ich dann 2014 getan, und als ich einen Namen für die Band wählen musste, war ZORNHEYM einfach sinnvoll. Um die Band von der Anstalt zu unterscheiden, beschlossen wir, den Bandnamen mit einem „y“ und die Anstalt mit einem „i“ zu schreiben. Die Anstalt befindet sich ebenfalls in Deutschland und die Zeit liegt zwischen dem Ende des 19. und dem Beginn des 20.  Ich bin sehr stolz auf das, was wir bis jetzt erreicht haben. Dies ist bei weitem der Höhepunkt meiner musikalischen Laufbahn.

Faszination der Finsternis

MH: Wurdest Du durch Bücher oder Filme inspiriert? Welche Horrorbücher oder -filme gehören zu Deinen Favoriten? Wann war Ihr erster Kontakt mit der dunklen Seite der Menschheit? Was fasziniert Sie an diesem Thema?

Zorn: Bevor ich die ersten Texte zu ZORNHEYM geschrieben habe, habe ich tonnenweise Dokumentationen über Serienmörder gesehen, tonnenweise Horrorfilme und -serien. Dann habe ich auch die Videospiele „An Evil Within“ und „Alan Wake“ gespielt, um in die richtige Stimmung zu kommen. Ich werde immer süchtig, wenn es eine großartige Geschichte zu etwas gibt. Ich bin kein großer Konsument von Horrorbüchern, Stephen King ist aber immer gut. Hinter seinen Büchern steckt immer ein tiefer Gedanke. Ich mag auch den schwedischen Autor „Johan Ajvide Lindqvist“. Er verlegt den Horror auf eine sehr gruselige Art und Weise in die Realität und macht ihn wirklich krank und verdreht. Wenn du das Buch „Let the Right One In“ noch nicht gelesen hast, solltest du das tun, wenn du eine morbide Horrorgeschichte magst. Er hat auch ein wirklich cooles Buch über Zombies geschrieben.

Meine erste Erinnerung an die dunkle Seite der Menschheit ist, dass ich als kleines Kind in den Nachrichten von Mördern hörte. Da dies in Schweden, als ich aufwuchs, nicht so häufig vorkam, wurde dem Thema in den Nachrichten viel Platz eingeräumt. Ich bin im Leben auch Menschen mit dunklen Gedanken begegnet.

Ich habe mich immer zu dunklerer Kunst hingezogen gefühlt, ich sehe darin Schönheit. So ist es auch bei der Musik. Ich möchte nicht, dass sie schön und unbedeutend ist. Ich habe mich auch immer für Folklore und urbane Legenden interessiert. Der dunkle Geist hat in der Regel mehr Schichten und mehr Tiefe als der fröhliche. Daher ist die Geschichte dahinter für mich immer interessant.

Der Ursprung des Bösen

MH: Wenn Menschen eine böse Seite haben, können sie diese oft mit einer schönen Fassade verbergen. Ein Insasse von ZORNHEIM ist jemand, der anfangs zwei Seiten hat. Später hat seine böse Seite die Oberhand gewonnen. Das kennen wir schon aus der klassischen Geschichte von Dr. Jekyll und Mr. Hyde. Eine andere Figur aus ZORNHEIM hatte eine tragische Kindheit und wurde deshalb böse.

Was ist Deiner Meinung nach die Ursache des Bösen im Menschen? Ist es eine grundlegende Eigenschaft des Menschen, die bei den einen gar nicht vorhanden ist und bei den anderen hemmungslos zum Vorschein kommt?

Zorn: Ich denke, es ist eine Mischung aus biologischem Erbe, sozialem/kulturellem Umfeld und Erziehung. Manche Menschen durchleben Härte und Trauma und wachsen zu einem „guten Menschen“ heran. Andere, die diese Art von Schrecken im Leben durchmachen, wachsen auf und werden zu dem, was sie missbraucht haben. Wenn man mit, sagen wir, ADHS oder einer Autismus-Diagnose der Stufe 1 geboren wird, kann das eine Superkraft sein, wenn man die richtige Erziehung und Unterstützung erfährt und wenn man sein Ding findet. Ihre Diagnose kann zu einem Motor werden und Ihnen Orientierung geben. 

Wenn Ihr „Ding“ jedoch das Ausrauben von Banken ist, werden Sie wahrscheinlich hinter Gittern landen und ein ziemlich miserables Leben führen. Ich glaube, dass es seltene Fälle gibt, in denen jemand böse geboren wird. Wenn man mit einer Psychopathie-Diagnose geboren wird, ist die Wahrscheinlichkeit größer, dass man böse wird, denke ich, aber es gibt auch Fälle, in denen man die richtige Erziehung genossen und gelernt hat, mit seinen Problemen zu leben und eine Funktion in der Gesellschaft zu finden. Ich glaube nicht, dass es schwarz oder weiß ist, es ist eher eine Grauzone.

Die Suche nach der Band

MH: Nach welchen Kriterien hast Du die Mitglieder für die Band ZORNHEYM ausgewählt? Oder haben sie Dich gefunden?

Zorn: Am Anfang war es nur ich. Als ich die ersten 3 Stücke geschrieben hatte, begann ich nach Mitgliedern zu suchen. Ich begann, einen Schlagzeuger zu suchen. Angst bot seine Dienste als Session-Schlagzeuger an, und er schlug auch vor, dass ich das ganze Album im Wing Studio mit Sverker Widgren aufnehmen sollte. Als das Schlagzeug aufgenommen war, musste ich mich um meine Gitarre kümmern. Scucca war ein Gitarrist, den ich im Haus eines gemeinsamen Freundes kennen gelernt hatte. Er bot mir an, mir beim Einstellen der Gitarre zu helfen. Nachdem er verstanden hatte, was ich vorhatte, bot er mir seine Dienste als Gitarrist und als Helfer beim Arrangieren der orchestralen Teile an und verfügte über ein umfassendes technisches Wissen.

Bendler und ich kommen aus der gleichen Stadt. Als wir aufwuchsen, kannte ich ihn allerdings nur als Gitarristen. Nachdem wir sehr lange nach einem Frontmann gesucht hatten, erinnerte ich mich daran, dass ich Bendler als Ersatz für Scar Symmetry bei einer Show auf youtube gesehen hatte. Ich schaute mir den Clip noch einmal an und war von seiner Stimme überwältigt. Ich kontaktierte ihn und bat ihn, einige Gesangsparts für „A Silent God“ aufzunehmen. Er hat das noch am selben Tag gemacht und mich mit dem Ergebnis total umgehauen! Da wusste ich, dass er der Frontmann von ZORNHEYM sein musste, er war die perfekte Ergänzung!

Die Comiczeichnerin

MH: Das erste Album „Where Hatred Dwells And Darkness Reigns“ wurde sogar in einem Comic verewigt Eine wirklich geniale Idee und deshalb musste ich es mir bestellen. Es ist eine visuell beeindruckende (und brutal) gezeichnete Graphic Novel. Wie kam es zu der Zusammenarbeit mit der Künstlerin Anu Bring? Wird es anlässlich des kommenden Albums eine Fortsetzung davon geben?

Zorn: Ich habe Anu, die heute mit vollem Namen Anu Bring-Saari heißt, im Jahr 2015 auf Instagram entdeckt. Ich folgte ihr und mochte ihren Stil sehr. Irgendwann sprach ich sie an, nachdem ich gesehen hatte, dass sie Bilder von King Diamond gepostet hatte, und erzählte ihr von meiner Band, an der ich arbeitete, und von dem Konzept. Sie erzählte mir, dass sie schon ihr ganzes Leben lang davon träumte, ein Comicbuch zu machen, also schlug ich vor, dass wir das zusammen machen könnten, und der Rest ist ZORNHEYM-Geschichte. Anu arbeitet derzeit hart an der zweiten Ausgabe des Zornheym-Comics.

Die Geschichte

MH: Habt Ihr die Geschichte bereits abgeschlossen oder entwickelt sie sich immer weiter?

Zorn: Ja, wir haben eine komplette Geschichte. Jedes Album wird der Welt von ZORNHEYM mehr und mehr hinzufügen, bis uns die Ideen ausgehen.

Dieses Album enthält nur eine Geschichte, die auf diesem einen Experiment basiert und im Comic erweitert wird. Es wird die illustrierte Version von „The Zornheim Sleep Experiment“ sein. Der erste Comic deutet dies bereits im letzten Kapitel über „Hestia“ in der ersten Ausgabe an. Die Geschichte im Comic beginnt mit der Absichtserklärung von Dr. Bettelheim, die im Booklet der CD/Vinyl enthalten ist, und endet mit dem Epilog, der ebenfalls im Booklet enthalten ist. Im Booklet finden sich nach jedem Song „Session Notes“, die die Ärzte geschrieben haben, damit man den Verlauf des Experiments verfolgen kann. Im Lyricvideo zu „Slumber Comes in Time“ könnt ihr einige Vorschauen sehen. Vielleicht machen wir für das neue Album noch mehr in dieser Art.

So viele Ideen

MH: Ihr habt also ein Konzept mit allen Arten von Medien und Merch rund um Eure Musik entwickelt. Welche anderen Ideen habt ihr im Kopf?

Zorn: Um ehrlich zu sein, konnten wir bisher nur einen Bruchteil unserer Ideen visualisieren. Wir haben mit der Idee gespielt, ein Brettspiel oder ein Kartenspiel zu machen. Wir wollen mehr Musikvideos machen. Ich habe davon geträumt, eine animierte Version der Graphic Novels zu machen, mit Synchronsprechern obendrauf. Es gibt so viele Ideen. Wenn wir ein Budget für solche verrückten Projekte hätten, würden wir wirklich bahnbrechende Sachen machen.

MH: Vielleicht ein Spielfilm oder ein Buch über ZORNHEYM? Was wäre zum Beispiel, wenn ein Unternehmen wie Netflix oder Amazon Ihnen das Angebot für eine ZORNHEYM-Serie oder einen Film machen würde? Würdest du das Drehbuch schreiben und vielleicht sogar eine Figur spielen wollen? Welche Art von Figur würden Sie wählen?

Zorn: Eine Fernsehserie wäre ein wahr gewordener Traum, und dann würde ich sie auch vertonen. Ich glaube, wir hätten alle gerne eine kleine Rolle in der Netflix-Version von „Zornheym“. Bendler hingegen würde es wahrscheinlich schaffen, eine der größeren Rollen darin zu haben. Wenn Bettelheim keine größere Rolle in der Serie spielen würde, würde ich diese oder eine andere Rolle als Häftling, der in einer der Szenen auftaucht, haben wollen.

Musik in der Familie

MH: Ist (Ihre) Musik innerhalb Ihrer Familie nur Ihre persönliche Sache oder hat Ihre Familie einen Anteil daran?

Zorn: Mein Großvater väterlicherseits, den ich nie kennengelernt habe, war eigentlich ein Wandermusiker in einem Jazztrio. Damals war das in Schweden nicht üblich, und er schaffte es tatsächlich, sich ein Auto zu kaufen und davon zu leben, bis er seine eigene Bäckerei in Finspång eröffnete. Eine Bäckerei, die in Schweden sogar zur königlichen Bäckerei wurde, da sie den schwedischen König mit Backwaren belieferte.

Mein Vater spielte als Erwachsener zum Spaß in einigen Bands, und ich glaube, ich kann mich daran erinnern, ihn einmal live gesehen zu haben. Er hat mich ein paar Mal zu ihren Bandproben mitgenommen. Meine Eltern haben mich immer sehr unterstützt und sich für meinen musikalischen Weg interessiert, und sie haben mich auch ein paar Mal live gesehen. Meine beiden Eltern sind heute wirklich stolz darauf, dass ich das immer noch mache und heute komponiere ich kleine Orchesterstücke mit Zornheym. Ich werde auch von meiner Verlobten sehr unterstützt.

Qualität auf Schallplatten

MH: Das Album „The Zornheim Sleep Experiment“ hat eine Spielzeit von 37 Minuten. Warum wurde es auf zwei Vinyls aufgeteilt, wenn es auch auf ein Vinyl gepasst hätte? Was bevorzugt ihr? CD oder Vinyl?

Zorn: Weil Noble Demon sich um beste Qualität bemüht! Je näher man an der Mitte des Vinyls ist, desto schlechter wird die Qualität des Sounds. Noble Demon wollte, dass das Vinyl den bestmöglichen Klang hat, deshalb haben sie beschlossen, das Album auf zwei Vinyls zu pressen. ZORNHEYM – Fascination of Evil -The Interview

fascinating is the new album „The Zornheim Sleep Eperiment“ from ZORNHEYM (Facebook, Bandcamp). For me a whole new level of METAL, because I have actually not heard anything like this. The new album will haunt you on 10/22/2021 and you should definitely pay a visit to the asylum `Zornheim´. There are many reasons for this. You can read this in the current review at `metal-heads.de‘ (link here). I honored this work of art a full 10 points, which for me are completely deserved in view of the first-class innovative compositions. Zorn is the founder of the band. He owes his name to his earlier activities in the band DARK FUNERAL, where a bandmember gave him the stage name. From this stage name the band name ZORNHEYM was born, so to speak the home of madness. So now let’s dive into the dark depths of the human mind with ZORN.

The new chapter of `Zornheim´

MH: The release of the new album „The Zornheim Sleep Experiment“ is imminent. In advance the singles „Keep The Devil Away“ and „Slumber Comes In Time“ have been released. How is the feedback so far? Is there a favorite among the two songs?

Zorn: The feedback has been overwhelming so far. People are psyched that we are back. A lot of people fell so madly in love with our first album that they didn’t think that we could top it, but even these people are praising the new album and thinking that it is the better one of the two. Both “Keep the Devil Away” and “Slumber Comes in Time” are two very important songs, but if I have to pick one of them I’d go with “Devil”.

The surprise song

MH: The second single „Slumber Comes In Time“ surprises with a male choir and a lot of melodic symphony. How did this idea with the male choir specifically come about? It sounds very classical. Do you dislike being forced into a musical corset?

Zorn: The melody for the chorus is based around an old folk tune that the Walloons brought to my hometown a few hundred years ago. When I started working on the song I felt that I wanted to use the melody as a homage to my hometown, Finspång. Since the melody is very big and epic I decided that the whole part would be sung by a male choir, to give it the depth and gravitas! I think the result is just mind blowing. I don’t mind at all dwelling in a classical landscape, on the contrary! I’m very much into classical music and sound tracks in general. The whole idea with the band was to make it very classical and cinematic. So if you think that we sound classical, it means that we have done it right!

The outstanding sound

MH: Do you think that you have created something new with the sound of ZORNHEYM? What is special about the sound of ZORNHEYM? What are the differences to the first album?

Zorn: Yes I think Zornheym is a very unique band both with the sound and overall lyrical concept behind it. Since all our albums will be taking place at the asylum and the level of details that are put into it all. I don’t think many bands do that. Usually a band has a concept for one album and then move on to another. When it comes to the general sound I think that our music is still very guitar oriented even though it is wearing a majestic, symphonic cloak. This is also unique I think.

A lot of symphonic bands let the guitars sit in the background and let the symphonic instruments do all the heavy lifting. The guitars are the train in Zornheym’s music, the train that carries all the symphonic wagons begins. I also think that we mix a lot of different styles in our music. My main influences are artists like Blind Guardian, Dissection, Yngwie Malmsteen, Iron Maiden,  and Hans Zimmer. That creates an interesting mixture I think.

On the new album we wanted to use the choirs more, with having them singing more words than just doing “Aa” or “Mm”. To have them filling in the words at verses or like in “Slumber” making them sing the whole chorus. We also used some woodwinds on this album. That was something Scucca wanted us to use more and we ended up using it on at least 3-4 tracks. Another big difference is that we actually recorded the strings at Wing Studios this time, which gave the recorder engineer and producer, Sverker Widgren, more control over the sound and make it fit the mix better.

The orchestra vibes

MH: The new album sounds very majestic with its symphonic sounds and makes the impression that these were originally recorded. Or are these sounds digitally created after all? Would you always prefer the original sound of a classical instrument to a digitally generated sound? Would you claim that you could always hear the difference?

Zorn: Thank you, I think the album sounds very majestic as well. The strings are a real quartet performing in the studio. We were lucky to find people who have worked with the Swedish philharmonic and Dimmu Borgir. The choir parts are a female and a male choir recorded by Scucca and some additional recordings by Bendler. The woodwind and the brass are samples that Scucca programmed using East-West Quantum Leap and Spitfire libraries. We actually used a real marching snare on top of the snare on this album for those parts where Steve is playing marching stuff on his snare, but the rest of orchestral percussion are also samples from the dance library.

Our goal is to only use real instruments in the future. Simply because it makes a huge difference. A sampled instrument can’t simulate the feeling that a real performer achieves. When I heard what our string quartet had recorded I had tears in my eyes because it was so well performed and full of emotions. They had never heard the songs before and just picked up the score sheets and played it like they have played these parts all of their lives. It would be fantastic to use real brass players on the next album! At the moment it is not possible.

Origin of `Zornheim´

MH: The band name is derived from a clinic called „Zornheim“ and the songs are about stories from this clinic. I know that there is a village in Germany called „Zornheim“. Was there actually also a clinic with this name or is this pure fiction? How did you come up with this story about Zornheim?

Zorn: It is all fiction. However I didn’t know about the village until a few years ago actually. I got the name back from when I was in Dark Funeral. I needed a stage name and the singer at the time, Nachtgarm, suggested Zornheym which I liked. It is German, since Nachtgarm is German, and basically means “home of anger”. When I parted ways with Dark Funeral I decided to form my own band and make it my dream band coming true. Since my early teens I had always wanted to make symphonic music.

Around my mid-20’s I also got a concept idea to make an album about an asylum. I was toying with that idea before I joined Devian in 2007. Now I had the chance to start something from scratch and build up a whole world and make the music the soundtrack to it. So I did that in 2014 and when I had to pick a name for the band, “Zornheym” just made sense. To differentiate the band from the asylum we decided to spell the band name with a “y” and the asylum with an “i”. The asylum is also located in Germany and the time is around the end of the 19th-century and the beginning of the 20th-century.  I am very proud of what we have achieved so far. This is by far the highlight of my musical career.

Fascination of the dark

MH: Were you inspired by books or movies? Which horror books or movies are among your favorites? When was your first contact with the dark side of mankind? What fascinates you about this theme?

Zorn: Before I wrote the first lyrics to Zornheym I watched tons of documentaries about serial killers, watched tons of horror movies and series. Then I also played the video game “An Evil Within” and “Alan Wake”, to really get into the right mood. I always get hooked if there’s a great story about something. I’m not a big consumer of horror books, Stephen King is always good though. His books always have a profound thought behind them. I also like the Swedish author Johan Ajvide Lindqvist („Let the right one in“). He places the horror in reality in a very creepy way and makes it really sick and twisted. If you haven’t read the book “Let the Right One in”, you should do that if you enjoy a morbid horror story. He has also written a really cool book about Zombies.

My first memory that I have of the darker side of mankind is hearing about murderers on the news as a little kid. Since it wasn’t that common in Sweden when I grew up it got a lot of space in the news. I have also come across people with dark minds in life.

I have always been drawn to darker art, I see beauty in it. It is the same when it comes to music. I want it to be beautiful and major. I have always been interested in folklore and urban legends as well. The dark mind usually has more layers and depth, compared to a happy one. So the story behind it is always interesting to me.

The origin of evil

MH: When people have an evil side, they can often hide it with a pretty facade. An inmate of ZORNHEIM is someone who has two sides at first. Later his evil side prevailed. We already know this from the classic story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Another character from ZORNHEIM had a tragic childhood and he became evil because of it.

What do you think is the cause of evil in man? Is it a fundamental characteristic of man that is not at all in some and comes out unrestrainedly in others? 

For example, is a tragic childhood under violence and deprivation of love always a soil for the seeds of evil?

Zorn: I think it is a mixture of your biological heritage and your social/cultural environment and your upbringing. Some people go through hardship and trauma and grow up to become a “good person”. Others that go through that kind of horrors in life grow up and become the thing that they were abused by. If you are born with, let’s say ADHD or a level 1 autism diagnosis it can be a superpower if you have the right upbringing and support and if you find your thing. Your diagnosis can become an engine and give you focus.

However, if your “thing” is robbing banks, you will probably end up behind bars and live a pretty miserable life. I think that there are rare cases where someone is born evil. If you are born with a psychopath diagnosis you have a bigger chance of becoming evil, I think, but there are cases where they have had the right upbringing and learned to live with their problems and find a function in society. I don’t think it’s black or white, it’s more of a grey zone.

Search for bandmates

MH: According to which criteria did you choose the members of your band ZORNHEYM? Or did they find you?

Zorn: In the beginning it was only me. When I had written the first 3 tracks I started looking for members. I started looking for a drummer. Angst offered his services as a session drummer and he also suggested that I would record the whole album at Wing Studio with Sverker Widgren. When the drums were recorded I had to get my guitar set up. Scucca was a guitarist that I had met at a common friend’s house. He offered to help me set up the guitar for me. Once he understood what I was creating he offered his services both as a guitarist and to help arrange the orchestral parts and an overall tech knowledge.

Bendler and I are from the same town. However when we were growing up I knew him as a guitar player. After we had searched for a front man for a very long time I remembered that I had seen Bendler filling in for Scar Symmetry at one show on youtube. I checked that clip again and was blown away by his voice. I contacted him and asked him to record some vocal parts for “A Silent God”. He did that the very same day and totally floored me with the result! I knew then that he had to be the front man for ZORNHEYM, he was the perfect match!

Once we needed to start touring Steve Joakim was recommended to us. We tried him out for one rehearsal and it felt great already from the first song. Since then he has been on our drum throne and “The Zornheim Sleep Experiment” is the first album he plays on and it sounds killer!

The comic artist

MH: The first album „Where Hatred Dwells And Darkness Reigns“ was even presented in a comic. A really brilliant idea and that’s why I had to order it. It’s a visually impressive (and brutal) drawn graphic novel.

How did the collaboration with the artist Anu Bring come about?

Will there be a sequel to it on the occasion of the upcoming album?

Zorn: I found Anu, nowadays her full name is Anu Bring-Saari, on instagram back in 2015 I think. I followed her and really liked her style. At one point I approached her, after seeing her posting pictures she had made of King Diamond, and told her about my band I was working on and about the concept. She told me that she had a lifelong dream of making a comic book so I suggested that we could do this together and the rest is ZORNHEYM history. Anu is currently working hard on the second issue of the Zornheym comic.

The story

MH: Have you already completed the story in your head or is it evolving? How far will the story go?

Zorn: Yes we have a complete story. Each album will add more and more to the world of Zornheym until we run out of ideas.

This album just has one story based on this single experiment which will be expanded in the comic. It will be the illustrated version of “The Zornheim Sleep Experiment”. The first comic actually hints about this in the last chapter about “Hestia” in the first issue. The story in the comic will start with Dr Bettelheim writing his statement of intent, that’s actually included in the booklet of CD/vinyl, of the sleep experiment and will end with the epilogue that is also written in the booklet. In the booklet after each song there are “session notes” that the doctors have written so you can follow the progress of the experiment. You can see some previews in the lyrics video to “Slumber Comes in Time”. We might do something more like this for the new album.

So many ideas

MH: So you have designed a concept with all kinds of media and merch around your music. What other ideas are in your head?

Zorn: To be honest we have only been able to visualize a fraction of our ideas. We have been playing with the idea of making a board game or a card game. We want to make more music videos. I have been dreaming about making an animated version of the graphic novels, with voice acting on top of it. There are so many ideas. If we got a budget for crazy projects like that, we would create some really groundbreaking stuff.

MH: Maybe a feature film or a book about ZORNHEYM? For example, what if a corporation such as Netflix or Amazon made you the offer for a ZORNHEYM series or film? Would you want to write the script and maybe even act on a character? What kind of character would you choose?

A TV-series would be a dream come true and then I would score it as well. I think we all would like a small role in the Netflix version of “Zornheym”. Bendler however would probably pull off having one of the bigger roles in it. If Bettelheim wouldn’t play a major role in the series, I would want that one or otherwise playing an inmate showing up in one of the scenes.

Family and the music

MH: Is (your) music within your family just your own personal thing or does your family have a part in it?

Zorn: My grandfather on my father’s side, whom I never got to meet, was actually a touring musician in a jazz trio. Back then that was not really common in Sweden and he actually managed to buy himself a car and make a proper living out of it until he opened up his own bakery in Finspång. A bakery that actually became a royal bakery in Sweden since they provided pastry to the king of Sweden.

My father played in some bands for fun as an adult and I think I have a memory of seeing him perform live. He took me to their band practice a few times. My parents have always been very supportive and interested in my musical journey and they have seen me live a few times. Both of my parents are really proud today that I’m still doing this and today I’m composing small orchestral pieces with Zornheym. I’m also very supported by my fiance.

Soundquality on vinyl

MH: The album „The Zornheim Sleep Experiment“ has a playing time of 37 minutes. Why was it split on two vinyls when it would have fit on one vinyl? What do you prefer? CD or Vinyl?

Zorn: Because Noble Demon cares about the quality of the music! The closer you are to the middle of the vinyl, the poorer the quality of the sound becomes. Noble Demon wanted the vinyl to have the best sound possible so that’s why they decided to put the album on two vinyls. I used to prefer CDs but nowadays I have upgraded my turntable at home and started making it a ritual to listen to albums, going back to the old way. Sitting with cover art in my hands and reading the lyrics and checking out all the details.

ZORNHEYM möchte Geschichten erzählen, die sich um eine Anstalt für psychisch gestörte Menschen, insbesondere geht es auch um exzessive gewalttätige Ausbrüche. 2019 wurde diese Geschichte mit dem Album „Where Hatred Dwells And Darkness Reigns“ begonnen und nun folgt am 22.10.2021 die Fortsetzung mit „The Zornheym Sleep Experiment“, welches über das Label `Noble Demon´ veröffentlicht wird. Inhaltlich keine leichte Kost und auch musikalisch wird dem Hörer einiges abverlangt.

Das einzigartige Soundspektakel

dürfte sowohl die Fans der harten düsteren Töne zufriedenstellen, aber auch diejenigen, die auf mächtige Melodien und außergewöhnliche Arrangements wert legen. Der Mix aus Death und Black-Metal in der Symbiose mit den hochwertigen symphonischen Elementen und den extravaganten Chören und Gesangslinien ist meiner Meinung nach ein neues Level des Extreme-Metal.

War das erste Album schon eine eindrucksvolle Präsentation, so verspricht das neue Album noch eine Steigerung des Ganzen. Die Mischung hat ihre ganz eigene Ausstrahlung, die auf dem neuen Album wahnwitzige Ausmaße annimmt. Ich garantiere, dass Ihr so etwas noch nicht gehört habt.

„Keep The Devil Away“

war die erste Single. Was schon bei dieser Single auffällt ist der Umstand, dass der Gesang sehr variabel eingesetzt wird. Ich weiß nicht, wann ich solch eine Fülle unterschiedlicher Gesangsstile bei einer Band bzw. einem Song gehört habe. Und das irre daran ist, dass es geil klingt. Nicht zu vergessen, dass wir uns im extremen Metal befinden und da muss man auf alles gefasst sein. In der Anstalt `Zornheim´ werden keine Kindergeburtstage gefeiert. Dort geht es hart zur Sache und doch hat ZORNHEYM eine Vorliebe für Melodien, was nicht nur in den symphonischen Elementen zum Ausdruck kommt, sondern sich durchaus auch in anderen Bereichen niederschlägt, wie z.B. in den Leads und vor allem auch im Gesang, der eben nicht nur aus Growls und Screams besteht. Gerade die Chöre spielen eine besondere Rolle auf dem Album. Am besten Ihr zieht Euch das Video rein, damit Ihr einen Eindruck bekommt.

Ein cineastisches Album

haben ZORNHEYM erschaffen, dass die Geschichte rund um Zornheim in bombastischer musikalischer Form darbietet. Es passiert so viel in der Musik und die Twists in den Songs sind unvorhersehbar. Es ist bemerkenswert mit wieviel Detailfreude und Hang zur Perfektion man das Songwriting betrieben hat. So hat man es geschafft das ohnehin schon ordentliche Niveau des Debütalbums um einiges nach oben zu schrauben. Wie man meinen Ausführungen bereits entnehmen kann, gehen ZORNHEYM progressiv vor. Beim Genuss des Albums werden sich dem aufmerksamen Hörer etliche Instrumente und Sounds offenbaren, die in dem gewaltigen Soundspektakel eingeflossen sind.

Die symphonischen Elemente klingen sehr organisch und ich lasse mich einfach mal dazu hinreißen zu behaupten, dass diese größtenteils original eingespielt wurden. Dies wird Mastermind `Zorn´ mir vielleicht auch in dem Interview bestätigen, welches ich mit ihm geführt habe und in den nächsten Tage hier bei `metal-heads.de´ zu lesen sein wird.

Raserei trifft Bombast

Schon der Opener „Corpus Vile“ ist eine Offenbarung und zieht Euch mit dem sakralen Chor und den lateinischen Texten in das Mysterium ZORNHEIM. Der Song stellt bereits effektvoll heraus, was hier bei ZORNHEYM Sache ist. Unterschiedlichste Formen des Gesangs und der Instrumentierung erwarten Euch, die eine besondere Dramaturgie erzeugen. So überzeugen auch die lateinisch gesungenen Texte am Ende und zusammen mit der Kirchenorgel wird der Opener zu einem grandiosen Finale getragen.

Die Fans gepflegter Raserei dürfen sich auf Songs wie z.B. „Dead Silence“ freuen, dass unter anderem im Blastbeatmodus durch die Ohren wirbelt und die schnellen Leads verpassen dem Sturm eine prägende Melodie. Dunkle Growls und Screams drücken dem Song (und auch anderen) eine verrückte Note auf. Der Song ist ein wahres Füllhorn an musikalischen Erfahrungen, die sich kaum alle in Worte fassen lassen. Man muss es selbst hören, um es zu verstehen. „Keep Cutting“ schneidert in ähnlicher Form seinen Sound und verbindet Momente purer wütender Raserei z.B. mit einem fantastischen melodischen, von Streichern unterlegten, Chorus.

Dunkel und gewaltig erschafft der Song „The Revelation“ eine ganz intensive Atmosphäre. Zu Beginn baut der pompöse Chor (Ich liebe diese mächtigen Drums dazu!) zusammen mit dem sich steigernden wuchtigen Sound eine super Spannungsbogen auf. Natürlich bietet auch dieser Song einige überraschende Twists.

„Slumber Comes In Time“

war die zweite Single und überraschte dann doch ein wenig. Hier geht es relativ moderat zur Sache, wenn man das mal in dem Genre so bezeichnen kann. Die Chöre erklingen in klassischer majestätischer Manier. Insgesamt ist es ein hochmelodischer genial komponierter Track, der alles in sich vereint und eindrucksvoll die Kreativität der Band herausstellt. Diese schreienden Leadgitarrenriffs nach dem ersten ruhigen sphärischen Zwischenspiel sind genial gemacht und gehen mir gar nicht mehr aus dem Kopf.

Fazit

ZORNHEYM bieten mit „The Zornheim Sleep Experiment“ ein extremes cineastisches Erlebnis, dass niemanden unbeeindruckt zurücklassen wird. Ein perfekt ausgearbeitetes Kunstwerk, dass mit allerlei Facetten daherkommt. Göttlichen Melodien gepaart mit einer Spur Wahnsinn und einer teils erschreckenden Brutalität schlagen sich hier nieder. Ein progressive Erfahrung voller Dramaturgie, die eine ungewöhnliche Faszination ausübt und dazu führt, dass man sich ob der vielen Eindrücke und genialen Ideen das Album wieder und wieder anhört, um in die Welt von Zornheim abzutauchen. Verstörend genial!

Das Songwriting ist als hervorragend zu bezeichnen und ich mag mir gar nicht vorstellen, was das für eine Arbeit gewesen sein muss, um letztlich zu diesem Ergebnis zu gelangen, dass so voller Feinheiten und unterschiedlicher Elemente steckt und doch schlussendlich ein einheitliches Konzept ergeben.

ZORNHEYM sind mit diesem außergewöhnlichen Album ein Anwärter in meiner Bestenliste des Jahres. Ihr könnt alles von ZORNHEYM direkt bei Bandcamp bestellen:

Extreme-Metal

ZORNHEYM (Facebook) are a project of the Swedish musician Zorn, who follows a certain vision with this band. Zorn is fascinated by the dark side of man. ZORNHEYM wants to tell stories that are about an asylum for mentally disturbed people, in particular about their excessive violent outbursts. In 2019 this story was started with the album „Where Hatred Dwells And Darkness Reigns“ and now follows on 22.10.2021 the continuation with „The Zornheym Sleep Experiment“, which will be released via the label `Noble Demon‘. Contentwise no light fare and also musically a lot is demanded from the listener.

The unique soundspectacle

should satisfy both the fans of hard gloomy tones, but also those who value powerful melodies and extraordinary arrangements. The mix of death and black metal in symbiosis with the high-quality symphonic elements and the extravagant choirs and vocal lines is, in my opinion, a new level of Extreme-Metal.

If the first album was already an impressive presentation, the new album promises an increase of the whole. The mix has its very own charisma, which takes on insane proportions on the new album. I guarantee that you have not heard anything like this.

„Keep The Devil Away“

was the first single. What is already noticeable in this single is the fact that the vocals are used very variably. I don’t know when I have heard such an abundance of different vocal styles in a band or a song. And the crazy thing about it is that it sounds awesome. Not to forget that we are in Extreme-Metal and there you have to be prepared for everything.

In the asylum ‚Zornheim‘ no children’s birthdays are celebrated. There it goes hard and nevertheless ZORNHEYM has a preference for melodies, which is expressed not only in the symphonic elements, but is reflected quite in other areas, as for example in the leads and above all also in the singing, which consists evenly not only of Growls and Screams. Especially the choirs play a special role on the album. It’s best to watch the video to get an impression.

A cineastic album

was created by ZORNHEYM. They presents the story around `Zornheim´ in bombastic musical form. So much happens in the music and the twists in the songs are unpredictable. It is remarkable with how much attention to detail and penchant for perfection the songwriting has been done. So they managed to raise the already decent level of the debut album a few steps higher. As you can already see from my remarks, ZORNHEYM proceed progressively. When enjoying the album will reveal to the attentive listener quite a few instruments and sounds that have flowed into the massive sound spectacle.

The symphonic elements sound very organic and I’ll just let myself claim that these were mostly recorded originally. Maybe mastermind ‚Zorn‘ will confirm this in the interview I did with him and which will be available here at ‚metal-heads.de‘ in the next days.

Rage meets bombast

Already the opener „Corpus Vile“ is a revelation and pulls you with the sacral choir and the Latin lyrics into the mystery ZORNHEIM. The song already effectively highlights what is going on here with ZORNHEYM. Most different forms of the singing and the instrumentation expect you, which produce a special dramaturgy. So also the Latin sung lyrics at the end are convincing and together with the church organ the opener is carried to a grandiose finale.

The fans of cultivated madness can look forward to songs such as „Dead Silence“, which, among other things, whirls through the ears in blastbeat mode and the fast leads give the storm a defining melody. Dark growls and screams push the song (and others) a crazy touch. The song is a true cornucopia of musical experiences that can hardly all be put into words. You have to hear it for yourself to understand it. „Keep Cutting“ tailors its sound in a similar way, combining moments of pure furious frenzy with, for example, a fantastic melodic chorus underpinned by strings.

Dark and powerful, the song „The Revelation“ creates a very intense atmosphere. At the beginning the pompous choir (I love those mighty drums!) builds up a great dramaturgy together with the increasing massive sound. Of course, this song also offers some surprising twists.

„Slumber Comes In Time“

as the second single then surprised a little. Here it goes relatively moderate to the point. The choirs sound in classic majestic manner. Overall, it is a highly melodic ingeniously composed track that combines everything in itself and impressively highlights the creativity of the band. Those screaming lead guitar riffs after the first quiet spherical interlude are brilliantly done and I can’t get them out of my head.

Conclusion

ZORNHEYM offer with „The Zornheim Sleep Experiment“ an extreme cinematic experience that will leave no one unimpressed. A perfectly elaborated work of art that comes along with all kinds of facets. Divine melodies paired with a hint of madness and a partly frightening brutality strike here. A progressive experience full of dramaturgy, which exerts an unusual fascination and leads to the fact that one listens to the album again and again because of the many impressions and ingenious ideas to dive into the world of `Zornheim´. Disturbingly ingenious!

The songwriting can be described as excellent and I can’t even imagine what kind of work it must have been to finally arrive at this result, which is so full of subtleties and different elements and yet finally results in a unified concept.

It’s going to be quite an exciting story this year, as there were many top-class outputs that found their way into my ears. And the year is not over yet.

Aber die Überraschung ist echt gut gelungen, so dass wir bei `metal-heads.de´ Euch den Song unbedingt bei HÖRET & SEHET vorstellen müssen . Der Song überrascht deshalb, da er im Verhältnis zu den sonstigen Songs von ZORNHEYM (Facebook) relativ moderat ausgefallen ist. Dies soll für eine Extreme-Metal-Band natürlich nichts heißen. Kuschelkurs ist trotzdem nicht angesagt. „Slumber Comes In Time“ ist nicht minder genial als die erste Single „Keep The Devil Away“!

Die Chöre erklingen in klassischer majestätischer Manier. Insgesamt ist es ein hochmelodischer genial komponierter Track, der alles in sich vereint und eindrucksvoll die Kreativität der Band herausstellt. Diese schreienden Leadgitarrenriffs nach dem ersten ruhigen sphärischen Zwischenspiel sind genial gemacht und gehen mir gar nicht mehr aus dem Kopf. Mit diesem Song bin ich noch neugieriger auf das neue Album. Wer weiß schon, was uns noch auf diesem Album erwarten wird? Jedoch kann man allerdings schon anhand der zwei bisher erschienenen Singles voraussagen, dass ZORNHEYM sehr einfallsreich und detailverliebt an das neue Album herangegangen sind.

Michael Schinkel´s ETERNAL FLAME

haben ihre erste epische Single „Damien“ des neuen Albums „Gravitation“ (VÖ 29.10.2021) veröffentlicht. Hierbei bewegen wir uns natürlich nicht mehr im Extreme-Metal, aber extrem gut sind hier auf jeden Fall die Künste des Musikers Michael Schinkel (Facebook). Neben einer tollen Stimme brilliert er mit fantastischen Gitarrenkünsten, die den Sound veredeln. So schafft er es mit seinen Bandkollegen einen imposanten Track erklingen zu lassen, dem es an nichts fehlt. Die symphonischen Elemente erzeugen die passende Atmosphäre für den Track. Sollte man nicht verpassen! Deshalb bin ich gespannt, ob das gesamte Album das erstklassige Niveau von „Damien“ halten kann. ! HÖRET & SEHET !

KHEMMIS

Und wieder was völlig anderes in der heutigen Ausgabe von HÖRET & SEHET. KHEMMIS (Facebook, Homepage) bewegen sich in den Gefilden des epischen Doom-Metal. Dabei haben sie ein außerordentlich gutes Gespür für grandiose Melodien und kehren in den richtigen Momenten die harte Seite raus. Die neue Single „Livin Pyre“ ist ein perfektes Beispiel dafür. Auf einem dicken Soundstrom schwimmen die ausgezeichneten Gesangsmelodien, welche zwischendurch in schweren Gewässern ausufern, wo Sänger dem Sound mit martialischen gutturalen Vocals zu Leibe rückt. Warum gerade der Song „Living Pyre“ als erste Veröffentlichung des neuen Albums „Deceiver“ (VÖ 19.11.2021) ausgewählt wurde, erklärt die Band auf ihrer Homepage:

„Die Entscheidung, welches Stück als erstes von einem neuen Album veröffentlicht werden soll, ist immer schwierig. In erster Linie wollen wir, dass er repräsentativ genug für das gesamte Album ist, damit man eine gute Vorstellung davon bekommt, was einen erwartet, aber auch einige neue Elemente in unseren Sound einführt. Es ist auch wichtig, dass der Song strukturell und melodisch so einfach ist, dass er für neue Hörer einprägsam ist, aber genug Details enthält, dass unsere langjährigen Fans auch nach mehrmaligem Anhören belohnt werden und leichte Rückbezüge zu früheren Werken haben. Idealerweise stellt er für uns auch einen natürlichen Ausgangspunkt dar, etwas, mit dem wir uns auf unserer eigenen, persönlichen Reise zur Konzeption des Albums verbinden.“

These screaming lead guitar riffs after the first quiet spherical interlude are brilliantly done and do not go out of my head. With this song I am even more curious about the new album. Who knows what else will await us on this album? But what you can already predict from the two singles released so far is that ZORNHEYM have approached the new album very imaginatively and with great attention to detail.

Michael Schinkel´s ETERNAL FLAME

Of course, we are no longer in extreme metal, but extremely good here are definitely the arts of the musician Michael Schinkel (Facebook). In addition to a great voice, he shines with fantastic guitar skills that refine the sound. Thus, he manages with his bandmates to sound the imposing track „Damien“ that lacks nothing. The symphonic elements create the right atmosphere for the track. Should not be missed! I’m curious if the whole album can keep the first-class level of „Damien“. ! HEAR & SEE !

KHEMMIS

And again something completely different today. KHEMMIS (Facebook, Homepage) move in the realms of epic doom metal. Thereby they have an extraordinary good feeling for grandiose melodies and sweep out the hard side in the right moments. The new single „Livin Pyre“ from the upcoming album „Deceiver“ (Release 2021-11-19) is a perfect example of this. On a thick stream of sound swim the excellent vocal melodies, which in between get out of hand in heavy waters, where singer comes to grips with the sound with martial guttural vocals. Why just the song „Living Pyre“ was chosen as the first release, the band explains on their homepage:

„Deciding which track to debut first on a new album is always difficult. Primarily, we want it to be representative enough of the whole record that you get a good idea of what to expect while also introducing some new elements to our sound. It is also important that it be a simple enough song, structurally and melodically, that it is memorable for new listeners, but features enough detail that our life-long fans are rewarded over multiple listens and slight call-backs to earlier works. Ideally, it also represents for us a natural starting point, something that we connect to in our own, personal journeys to the album’s conception.“
