IMMINENCE – „The Black“ Review
(english review down below)
Genre: Metalcore
Release: 12.04.’24
The Black
Eddie Berg sagt folgendes über „The Black“:

„Death By A Thousand Cuts“ ist quasi konzeptionell das Gegenteil beispielsweise vom o.g. „Heaven Shall Burn“.
Cineastisch
Also lasst es einfach geschehen und gebt euch „The Black“ hin.
English review
Genre: Metalcore
Release: 12.04.’24
IMMINENCE (Facebook) from Sweden have released their album „The Black“ today. IMMINENCE are still an exceptional band with their own sound, which is largely due to singer Eddie Berg, who is responsible for the special accents with his very personal vocal expression and his violin. The last album „Heaven in Hiding“ (review) was already a highly atmospheric experience with unique moments. It’s hard to top something like that.
The Black
Eddie Berg says the following about „The Black“:
This is the closest we’ve ever been to a self titled release, as this record speaks volumes about what Imminence is as a band. Drawing influences across our discography mixed with our Scandinavian roots, you can hear elements from our entire history, yet fueled by an insatiable hunger.
The album is probably the most conceptual we’ve ever created, and I’ve never been more proud of a body of work before. Continuing on the path as previous releases, the lyrical concepts revolve around mental health and depression. But there’s no holding back this time. It’s angrier, more desperate and unhinged, soaking in fear and darkness.
We’ve also allowed ourselves to let the album soar out into unexpected spaces, creating a musical journey with stark contrasts between light and darkness. It’s an ‚eat-your-heart-out‘, unapologetic testament to what Imminence has become. This is the black.

A maximally intense experience
IMMINENCE’s music is highly emotional, in an incredibly intense and contrasting way. This concept has been implemented even more radically with the new album. As a result, you often sit there with your mouth open in amazement and are completely overwhelmed.
But first you are prepared for the journey relatively smoothly with the opener „Come Hell Or High Water“. A calmer, unobtrusive song that hints at the experiences to come towards the end. Already with the second song „Desolation“, the level of heaviness rises steeply in phases and makes a powerful impression. This is followed by the song „Heaven Shall Burn“, which was already released as a single seven months ago. This is another perfect presentation of the IMMINENCE world. It starts off super massive and aggressive. Later, the violin joins in and adds that certain something to the sound. This is followed by a delicate interlude with clean vocals, only to make the coming force seem even more powerful.
An emotional tsunami
overwhelms the listener on this album. For me, „Come What May“ is a dazzling showpiece among a collection of musical diamonds. For a whole six minutes, you are emotionally torn back and forth. The first half reveals some of the heaviest and darkest moments on the album. IMMINENCE create a world of unbridled rage and despair. Orchestral elements further intensify the atmosphere. But in the second half, the delicate, dreamlike violin playing creates a poignant, melancholy aura that is emotionally moving.
„Death By A Thousand Cuts“ is conceptually the opposite of the aforementioned „Heaven Shall Burn“, for example. It impresses more with quiet phases with clean vocals, but you shouldn’t feel too safe, because the insistent energetic phases are definitely there. And towards the end there is a mix of both worlds. In the IMMINENCE world, I would describe it as a dark ballad with a dramatically powerful aura. I would also describe the title track „The Black“ in the same way.
Cinematic
„The Call Of The Void“ unleashes the monster, which lashes out with unbridled energy and makes the earth tremble. And what an eruption will hit you later. A brute thunderstorm of drums is unleashed. „Continuum“ is another drastic balancing act between hell and heaven. In addition to the music, the visuals in the videos are just as impressive and are always worth seeing. The following video is no exception!
Conclusion
IMMINENCE have actually managed to top their previous album. „The Black“ is a perfect symbiosis of different emotional spheres! It has the inescapable attraction and dark depth of a black hole, but at the same time the luminous power of a star. You simply cannot escape their fascination. So just let it happen and indulge in „The Black“.
