NEVER OBEY AGAIN – „Trust“ Review

Die junge Band NEVER OBEY AGAIN (Facebook) aus Italien legt nach ihrem starken Debüt „The End Of An Era“ im letzten Jahr schon wieder nach. Ihr neues Album „Trust“wird am 18.10.2024 veröffentlicht. Das Debüt offenbarte schon echt starke Songs und viel Talent bei den Musikern und es hatte eine dementsprechend gute Bewertung im Review erhalten. Allerdings hatte ich unter anderem folgendes Fazit gezogen:

Ich hätte mir im Gesamtkonzept noch etwas mehr Mut gewünscht, indem die Band stellenweise noch mehr aus sich rausgekommen wäre und z.B. mehr Aggressivität gezeigt hätte. Carol singt fantastisch, könnte aber sicherlich noch mehr aus sich herauskommen und mehr Energie entfesseln.

Krawummm

Und nun musste ich nach dem ersten Hören der neuen Songs feststellen, dass genau das passiert ist. Ich bin direkt wieder Feuer und Flamme für NEVER OBEY AGAIN. Und die Flamme brennt noch heißer als zuvor. Eine solche Energie-Explosion hätte ich nicht erwartet. Denn die neuen Songs sind echte Burner und haben mich völlig umgehauen.

NEVER OBEY AGAIN haben weiterhin hart an sich gearbeitet und bieten auf ihrem neuen Album eine eindrucksvolle Show. Sie habe sich ein Herz gefasst und lassen es auf „Trust“ ungezügelt krachen. Dabei haben sie ihren groovigen Sound glücklicherweise beibehalten, jedoch kommen sie mit einer breiteren Range daher. Sie begeben sich mutiger in extreme Bereiche, die man zuvor so noch nicht bei der Band gehört hat. Das bedeutet eine enorme Herausforderung für Sängerin Carolina, aber sie meistert diese Challenge mit Bravour und sie übertrifft damit sogar meine hohen Erwartungen. NEVER OBEY AGAIN liefern eine Top-Performance. Mit viel Power erschaffen sie einen emotional kontrastreichen Mix. Beim Song „Never Feel, Never Fear“ haben sie folgende Botschaft für uns:

„Never Feel, Never Fear“ ist ein Lied über Pflichten, Aufgaben, Fristen, sozialen Druck, Beziehungen, Geld und Erwartungen. Gefühllosigkeit und Loslösung von Emotionen sind die einzigen Schlüssel, um den überwältigenden Druck und den Mangel an Menschlichkeit in der heutigen Gesellschaft zu überleben.

„Never Feel, Never Fear“ ist gibt schon mal einen kleinen Vorgeschmack auf die neuen Facetten bei NEVER OBEY AGAIN. Ansonsten fühlen sich die Fans der ersten Stunde sofort wohl, weil die Band eben auch die typischen Trademarks vom Debüt aufgreift. Die moderne Ausstrahlung mit einem mitreißenden Groove sind wieder mit an Bord. Und das ist auch gut so! Die Mischung ist zwar extremer geworden und die Kontraste deutlicher hervorgehoben, aber es bleibt insgesamt ein ausgewogenes Miteinander im Soundgefüge.

Ist der Opener „Animal Choice“ als Opener noch ein Song zum Eingewöhnen, so bekommt man schon mit dem zweiten Song „G.O.D. (Given Or Denied)“ mit voller Gewalt die extreme Seite geboten. Als ich diesen Song zum ersten Mal hörte, war ich echt platt. So ein hartes Brett hatte ich nicht erwartet. Der Song macht wirklich keine Gefangenen! Ohne Frage einer der härtesten Songs der Band, wenn nicht sogar der härteste bisher. Carol schreit sich hier so sehr die Seele aus dem Leib, dass einem Angst und Bange wird. Krasser Scheiß!

Die neuen Songs haben einen starken Schub bekommen und besitzen einen unglaublichen Punch. „Give Me A Fuckin‘ Break“ hält sich ebenfalls nicht zurück und holt die Boxhandschuh raus, um euch ein paar heftige Schläge zu verpassen. Ab und zu mischt sich auch eine männliche Stimme ein, wenn mein Gehör sich nicht vollkommen täuscht. Kommt gar nicht so schlecht. Man kann die Musik von NEVER OBEY AGAIN sicherlich als emotional bezeichnen, wobei Sängerin Carol in jeder Situation eine völlig überzeugende Leistung abruft. Sie ist stark in den klaren zarten gefühlvollen Melodien, aber auch vernichtend mit ihrer brachialer Wut und Energie.

NEVER OBEY AGAIN klingen auch kraftvoll, wenn es nicht so richtig hart zur Sache geht. Hier kommen auch Balladen mit viel Power daher, wie z.B. beim wohlklingenden Song „Under My Skin, Before Your Eyes“. Außergewöhnlich scharfe Kontraste zeigen sich z.B. beim Song „I Wish“, der sich zunächst balladesk gefühlvoll einschmeichelt und plötzlich heftige Backpfeifen verteilt. In dem Song steckt aber noch einiges mehr und serviert damit ein reichhaltiges musikalisches Büffet.

Die Gitarren alternieren zwischen klangvollen Akkorden und brutalen Riffs und verstärken somit die verschiedenen Stimmungen in den Songs sehr gekonnt, während die Drums megafett klingen und zusammen mit dem Bass einen krassen Groove entstehen lassen. Da muss auch mal ein Kompliment an die Verantwortlichen der Produktion raus, die beim Mixing und Mastering eine super Arbeit gemacht, indem sie die Songs perfekt in Szene gesetzt haben.

Fazit

NEVER OBEY AGAIN haben nach ihrem schon überzeugenden Debüt einen weiteren entscheidenden Sprung gemacht. Sie nutzen ihr umfassendes Potential und haben ihr Repertoire erweitert. Damit haben sie verdammt starke Songs erschaffen, die noch mehr Facetten offenbaren. Gerade die extreme Seite mit ihren brutalen Ausbrüchen sind beeindruckend spektakulär. Die Songs brauchen sich überhaupt nicht hinter namenhaften Bands in dem Genre verstecken. NEVER OBEY AGAIN klingen wie eine große Band, absolut professionell und einfach überwältigend.

The young band NEVER OBEY AGAIN (Facebook) from Italy are following up their strong debut “The End Of An Era” last year. Their new album “Trust” will be released on 18.10.2024. The debut already revealed really strong songs and a lot of talent among the musicians and it had received a correspondingly good rating in the review. However, I had drawn the following conclusion, among others:

I would have liked to see a bit more courage in the overall concept by the band coming out of their shell even more in places and showing more aggression, for example. Carol sings fantastically, but could certainly come out of her shell even more and unleash more energy.

Holy shit

And now, after listening to the new songs for the first time, I have realised that this is exactly what has happened. I’m on fire for NEVER OBEY AGAIN. And the flame is burning even hotter than before. I didn’t expect such an explosion of energy. Because the new songs are real burners and have completely blown me away.

NEVER OBEY AGAIN have continued to work hard on themselves and put on an impressive show on their new album. They have taken heart and let it rip without restraint on „Trust“. Fortunately, they have retained their groovy sound, but with a broader range. They venture more boldly into extreme areas that have not being heard from the band before. This means an enormous challenge for singer Carolina, but she masters this mission with flying colours and even exceeds my high expectations. NEVER OBEY AGAIN deliver a top performance. With a lot of power, they create an emotionally contrasting mix. In the song „Never Feel, Never Fear“ they have the following message for us:

„Never Feel, Never Fear“ is a song about duties, tasks, deadlines, social pressure, relationships, money and expectations. Callousness and detachment from emotions are the only keys to surviving the overwhelming pressure and lack of humanity in today’s society.

„Never Feel, Never Fear“ is a small foretaste of the new facets of NEVER OBEY AGAIN. Otherwise, fans of the first hour will feel right at home, because the band also picks up on the typical trademarks from their debut. The modern charisma with a rousing groove is back on board. And that’s a good thing! Although the mix has become more extreme and the contrasts more clearly emphasised, the overall sound structure remains balanced.

If the opener „Animal Choice“ is still a song to get used to, then the second song „G.O.D. (Given Or Denied)“ already offers the extreme side with full force. When I heard this song for the first time, I was really gobsmacked. I hadn’t expected such a hard board. The song really takes no prisoners! Without question one of the band’s heaviest songs, if not the heaviest so far. Carol screams her heart out so much that it’s scary. Awesome shit!

The new songs have been given a strong boost and pack an very strong punch. „Give Me A Fuckin‘ Break“ doesn’t hold back either and gets the boxing gloves out to give you a few heavy punches. Every now and then a male voice joins in, if my hearing isn’t completely wrong. It’s not bad at all. The music of NEVER OBEY AGAIN can certainly be described as emotional, with singer Carol delivering a completely convincing performance in every situation. She is strong in the clear, delicate, soulful melodies, but also devastating with her brute fury and energy.

NEVER OBEY AGAIN sound powerful even when things aren’t really tough. There are also ballads with a lot of power, such as the melodious song „Under My Skin, Before Your Eyes“. Extraordinarily sharp contrasts can be heard, for example, in the song „I Wish“, which starts off with a ballad-like, soulful lullaby and then suddenly starts throwing out heavy whips. But there’s a lot more to this song, which serves up a rich musical buffet.

The guitars alternate between sonorous chords and brutal riffs, skilfully reinforcing the different moods in the songs, while the drums sound mega-fat and, together with the bass, create a killer groove. A compliment must also go to those responsible for the production, who did a great job to mixing and mastering.

Conclusion

NEVER OBEY AGAIN have made another decisive leap after their already convincing debut. They have utilised their extensive potential and expanded their repertoire. In doing so, they have created damn strong songs that reveal even more facets. The extreme side in particular, with its brutal outbursts, is impressively spectacular. The songs don’t need to hide behind well-known bands in the genre. NEVER OBEY AGAIN sound like a great band, absolutely professional and simply overwhelming.
