WITHERFALL – „Sounds Of The Forgotten“ Review
(english review below)
Genre: Progressive Metal
Release: 31.05.’24
Label: Death Wave Records
Doch dann geschah etwas. Wir fühlten uns ein wenig besiegt. So fing „Sounds Of The Forgotten“ an.

They Will Let You Down“.
Da kommt noch was!
In „They Will Let You Down“ geht es darum, dass man die Dinge besser selbst in die Hand nimmt, als sich von Leuten einwickeln zu lassen, die vorgeben, einem helfen zu wollen.
Kommentar der Band zum Song „They Will Let You Down“
When It All Falls Away“ ansprechen. Song „Where Do I Begin“.
Fantastisch!
Das gleiche Empfinden habe ich beim Titelsong „Songs Of The Forgotten“.
Fazit

It’s been three years since WITHERFALL (Facebook/Homepage) released their last album „Curse Of Autumn“. Back then, we also conducted an interview with singer Joseph and guitarist Jake. Now the wait is over and the successor „Sounds Of The Forgotten“ is ready to present itself to the fans. „Curse Of Autumn“ (review) set the bar very high. It was an excellent album, but unfortunately it was also slowed down by the coronavirus pandemic. We all know that this crisis has affected many industries, but especially the music scene. That’s why WITHERFALL, like many others, were very frustrated, which is expressed in the following statement regarding the songs on the new album:
We found ourselves writing really depressing, melancholy songs about how just disappointed we were with all the work we put into Curse of Autumn and then going through the pandemic. Before that, we thought nothing was going to stop us. Then, something did. We felt a bit defeated. So, that’s how “Sounds Of The Forgotten“started. But we got out of that quickly. The songs we ended up writing were empowering. We have songs with negative emotions, but the overarching theme is moving forward and perseverance. That’s the epitome of “Sounds Of The Forgotten“.

WITHERFALL are something special
Anyone who only prefers musically easily digestible fast food will not be happy with WITHERFALL, because the technically very accomplished musicians stand for multi-faceted and sophisticated arrangements, which also have their catchy and theatrical moments. Let’s start the album with the opener „They Will Let You Down“.
WITHERFALL start at full throttle and start off with an aggressive banger. Yes, they are also known for that. And once they really get going and let go of the reins, there’s no stopping them, especially not for guitarist Jake Dreyer. Once again he conjures up sounds on the strings that will amaze you. But don’t think that this is the darkest and most aggressive song on the album. There’s more to come!
‘They Will Let You Down’ is about doing things better on your own than letting people who pretend to want to help you get involved.
Comment of the band about the song „They Will Let You Down“
Soulful and powerful atmospheric ballads
However, after the opener you are first gently stroked… With „Where Do I Begin“, WITHERFALL show themselves from a completely different side. Here you hear a power ballad. Singer Joseph has the gift of being able to convey even tender emotions excellently. I already mentioned his penchant for theatricality in the last review. You can convince yourself of all this extensively in six minutes. While the powerful ballad as a whole tends to ingratiate itself with sweet melodies, he briefly shows his dark side from minute 04:30 onwards.
While we’re on the subject of ballads, we can also directly address the song „When It All Falls Away“. However, it has a completely different vibe to the aforementioned song „Where Do I Begin“. „When It Falls Away“ has a much more melancholic vibe and internalizes more classic rock vibes. Sadness spreads in the first few minutes, reaching into the painful, but also caressing the soul with conciliatory melodies. The acoustic guitars with folkloristic flamenco flair in the solo part sound beautiful before the song starts its brilliant finale, in which the song experiences an emotional volcanic eruption.
The theme of flamenco guitars is then taken up again in the instrumental track „Opulent“, which I don’t want to withhold from you. Because it reveals the magnificent technical and creative abilities of this exceptional band. You have certainly never heard such guitar sounds in such a dark outfit. Fantastic!
A rollercoaster of emotions
„Opulent“ segues seamlessly into the monumental song „What Have You Done“, which is also a WITHERFALL trademark. The finale takes up a whole ten minutes, but it doesn’t quite convince me as much as other songs on the album. I have the same feeling about the title track „Songs Of The Forgotten“. These are songs that are far from being a weak point, but the album has stronger songs on offer for my taste.
For example, there’s the sinful „Ceremony Of Fire“, which once again really kicks ass and was visually realized with a very sexy video. WITHERFALL somehow have a penchant for sacred symbolism in their videos, which are linked to elements or rituals of sin and seduction. Musically, it is once again a didactic piece that will leave your mouth open. The fireworks of technical sophistication that are fired off here in all areas are incredible. The palette of impressions ranges from aggressively stormy to peacefully esoteric moments.
The hardest chunk
on the album is probably the song „Insidious“. A merciless smasher that breathes in blatant death metal vibes. The bludgeoning orgy booms ominously from the speakers. Joseph lets the crassest darkest vocals out of his throat. It’s not something you’re used to in this extreme form, but it sounds great. In my opinion, this opens up a whole new musical world and possibilities for WITHERFALL. The band stays true to themselves here too and doesn’t just let the song run its course. The attacking vehemence is already toned down and a thoughtful yet disturbing part takes over. But don’t worry, because the song switches back to full throttle.
Conclusion
With „Sounds Of The Forgotten“, WITHERFALL shine like a magnificent star in the dark firmament. With their usual high-class songs, which reveal both artful songwriting and technical prowess at the highest level, WITHERFALL paint spectacular musical worlds, which are permeated by melancholic veins and also characterized by a certain gloom. At times, WITHERFALL are partly more aggressive and extreme than ever before, but at the same time enchant with wonderful melodies and skillful arrangements. Stylistically, the band is influenced by many eras and styles of metal and rock. In addition, WITHERFALL have succeeded in creating a dense atmosphere, which gives the sound depth and richness.
