Kommen wir zum letzten Teil meiner METALHEADs Toplist, der sich mit Progressive Metal befasst. Es ist eine sehr spannende und interessante Kategorie, denn progressive Musik gibt es ganz unterschiedlichen Genres. Also hier die Auswahl von 2024.

COSMIC JAGUAR „El Era Del Jaguar“

COSMIC JAGUAR sind eigentlich eine Thrash Metal Band, aber wenn man die Einordnung der Band hier beim Progressive Metal berücksichtigt, sollte jedem klar sein, dass COSMIC JAGUAR keinen „normalen“ Thrash Metal kloppen. Es gibt keine Songs, die einfach strukturiert von vorne bis hinten durchgeprügelt werden. Hier geht es erheblich vertrackter zur Sache und zum Teil sind die Songs wirklich so verrückt, dass sie für mich echte Jazz-Vibes versprühen. Für aufmerksame Hörer, die sich für technisch aufwendige Songs jenseits der Normalität begeistern können, ist es wohl ein echtes Vergnügen.

Die Songs sind vollgepackt mit technischen Kunststücken. Das Songwriting ist unheimlich komplex und unvorhersehbar. Es gibt kaum eingängige Passagen, denn das Songwriting folgt keinem bestimmten Muster. Hier werden ständig die Richtungen gewechselt und wenn man nicht aufpasst, dann verliert man schnell die Orientierung im Geflecht des instrumentalen Chaos. Doch das Chaos hat Methode und offenbart eine wahres Feuerwerk musikalischer Fertigkeiten. (full review)

GHOST ON MARS – „Out Of Time And Space“ 

GHOST ON MARS (Facebook) aus Italien haben zwar nach ihrer EP „Lost Signals“ fünf Jahre gebraucht, um ihr Longplayer-Debüt „Out Of Time And Space“ fertigzustellen. Aber es hat sich gelohnt, denn das Album ist wunderbar geworden. Ich kannte diese Band bisher überhaupt nicht und sie haben mich mit ihren Songs auf Anhieb völlig überzeugt und es gehört verdient in die Toplist 2024.

Der Sound ist prinzipiell härter ausgerichtet und lebt auch von robusten Riffs und einem straffen Bass. Die Vocals sind dagegen clean gehalten, zumindest die meiste Zeit. Schon im zweiten Song „Quarantine“, der düster und druckvoll daherkommt, blitzen zwar Growls auf, aber es sei gesagt, dass das die Ausnahme bleibt. Es ist eher ein kurzfristiger atmosphärischer Effekt, der hier die dunkle Thematik unterstützt. Im allgemeinen ist der Gesang sehr melodisch gehalten. Mir gefällt die melancholische Ausstrahlung, welche immer wieder in unheimlich intensive Momente eskaliert.

GHOST ON MARS ist mit „Out Of Time And Space“ ein sehr beachtliches Debütalbum gelungen. Äußerst ausgereifte Songs, die mit vielen faszinierenden und ergreifenden Momenten berühren, zugleich aber auch mit druckvoller knackiger Härte agieren. Die Leistung aller Bandmitglieder ist famos, wobei die wahnsinnig starke Gitarrenarbeit traumhafte Momente beschert. Zudem zeigt Sänger Moreno viele Facetten, ja sogar extreme Ansätze, die für tolle Überraschungen auf der Reise sorgen. So dürfte es hochgradig spannend werden, in welche Richtung es zukünftig gehen wird. Doch zunächst können wir uns auf dem fantastischen „Out Of Time And Space“ widmen, dass uns auf eine monumentale Reise durch verschiedene Sphären einlädt. (full review)

FACTORY OF ART – „Back To Life“

Es ist wahre Kunst, die uns FACTORY OF ART hier präsentieren. Es wird mit jedem Moment des Hörens deutlicher, dass sie ihre o.g. Mission wieder einmal mit ’summa cum laude‘ absolvieren. Die Gilde höchst professioneller Musiker wollte wohl unmissverständlich klar machen, was für eine tolle Ausnahmeband sie sind. FACTORY OF ART besorgen uns mit ihrem neuen Album „Back To Life“ einen intensiven Ohrgasmus.

Ein Glanzstück ist auch die ausgekoppelte Single „Blessing In Disguise“. Es war der erste Song, den ich von dem neuen Album hörte und er hat mich dermaßen umgehauen. Allein der Beginn mit den Gesängen eines echten Chors (ARMACORD) ist schlichtweg genial und wunderbar. Und was sich dann im folgenden in die Ohren ergießt, ist nicht minder eindrucksvoll. Es prasseln wieder so viele Eindrücke auf einen hernieder, dass ich mit den Song mindestens fünfmal hintereinander angehört habe, um ihn in all seiner Pracht zu begreifen. Wundervolle, ja ebenso kraftvolle Melodien, gehen miteinander eine faszinierende Symbiose ein. Diese Mischung wird sowohl instrumental als auch im gesanglichen Bereich hervorragend umgesetzt. Sogar Growls finden hier ihren Platz.

Meine Erwartungen waren hoch und sie wurden dennoch übertroffen. Jeder Song ist ein Kunstwerk. Diese Kreativität und Liebe zum Detail, dazu noch der Mut über Grenzen zu gehen, ist in jedem Song zu spüren. Aber das zeichnet FACTORY OF ART eben aus. Ein kostbares Qualitätsmerkmal! Ich habe es aber tatsächlich in dieser Reichhaltigkeit und Konsequenz nicht erwartet. Fantastisch! Felsenfest kann ich behaupten, dass dieses Album in meiner Toplist 2024 erscheinen wird. Wer auf anspruchsvollen, professionellen und mitreißenden Progressive Metal steht, der ist hier mit absoluter Sicherheit an der richtigen Adresse. Lasst euch mitreißen und verzaubern! (full review)

LOCH VOSTOK – „Opus Ferox II-Mark Of The Beast“

LOCH VOSTOK haben einen sehr individuellen Sound erschaffen, der sich von der Masse abhebt und einen starken Wiedererkennungswert besitzt. Dafür sorgte auch der wahnsinnig gute Sänger Jonas Radehorn, der mit unheimlich viel Charisma fantastische Versionen seiner Stimme offenbart. Das neue Album beginnt mit einem für Bandverhältnisse geradlinigen heftigen Burner.

„Distant Assistance“ donnert mit Vollgas durch die Ohren. Aber natürlich werden hier schon progressive Strukturen mit feinen Details verschmolzen. Dabei werde ich auch sofort wieder daran erinnert, mit wieviel handwerklicher Kunst die Musiker agieren. Die Drums sind infernal, der Gesang phänomenal! Die Gitarrenriffs brennen und das Solo mit viel Shreddingtreibstoff zündet volle Kanne durch. Damit ist LOCH VOSTOK ein perfekter Katapultstart gelungen. Ich empfinde es als positiv, dass LOCH VOSTOK mit einem neuen Level der Härte auftrumpfen.

Bei den Songs auf „Opus Ferox II-Mark Of The Beast“ sind die verschiedenen musikalischen Fäden noch feiner miteinander verwoben worden, wobei die Band aber auch neue Gipfel der Härte erklimmt und es mächtig krachen lässt. Der atmosphärischen Komponente kommt noch mehr Bedeutung bei, die im Vergleich zum Vorgänger eine dunklere Welt zeichnet. LOCH VOSTOK haben somit konsequent kreativ ihren Weg weiter verfolgt, um uns wieder auf ein ganz besonderes progressives Musikabenteuer einzuladen. Wir sollten dieser wunderschönen Einladung folgen! THE MOOR – „Ombra“

THE MOOR haben mit ihrem neuen Album „OMBRA“ ein wahres Meisterwerk erschaffen, was seinesgleichen sucht. Die komplexen Arrangements sind unfassbar gut und meisterhaft umgesetzt, da sie trotz ihrer komplexen Art ganz und gar nicht kompliziert klingen. Alles ist in einem Fluß, fügt sich ineinander und geht wunderbar ins Ohr. Der melodische Death Metal mit tiefer Atmosphäre erstreckt sich bis in epische Gefilde. Er überzeugt und fasziniert in jedem Moment. Enrico als herausragender Sänger setzt mit seinem fantastischen Gesang den Songs die Krone auf.

Der Titelsong „Ombra“ wird zu einer epischen Offenbarung. Dafür sorgen unter anderem die imposanten Synthies. Eine besondere Faszination ergibt sich aus den italienisch gesungenen Lyrics. Und auch wenn ich mich wiederholen mag, aber die perfekt arrangierten Songs sind überaus fesselnd. Die Kombination von eindringlicher Härte und zauberhaften Harmonien ist schlichtweg spektakulär. Dabei sorgen die grandios gespielten Gitarrensolos immer wieder für zauberhafte Momente. Enrico schafft es zudem mit seinem vielfältigen Gesang ganz unterschiedliche Emotionen zu erzeugen, was man durchaus als herausragend bezeichnen kann.

THE MOOR schaffen es mit jedem einzelnen Song völlig zu überzeugen. Jeder Song bewegt sich in der gleichen musikalischen Welt, aber diese ist hat viele Erlebnisse zu bieten. Die Charakteristika der einzelnen Songs werden brillant umgesetzt und offenbaren immer wieder neue Erfahrungen. (full review)

WITHERFALL „Sounds Of The Forgotten“

WITHERFALL sind schon lange ein Geheimtipp in der Szene und mittlerweile konnten sie eine beachtliche treue Fanbase um sich herum scharen. WITHERFALL glänzen mit „Sounds Of The Forgotten“ wie gewohnt mit hochklassigen Songs, die sowohl ein kunstvolles Songwriting offenbaren als auch technisch auf höchstem Level agieren. Dabei gehen WITHERFALL teils so aggressiv und extrem vor wie niemals zuvor, aber verzaubern auch gleichzeitig mit wundervollen Melodien und geschickten Arrangements. Stilistisch lässt man sich hier von vielen Epochen und Stilrichtungen des Metal und Rock beeinflussen. Außerdem ist es WITHERFALL gelungen eine dichte Atmosphäre zu erschaffen, was dem Sound Tiefe und Fülle verleiht.

„When It Falls Away“ hat eine deutlich melancholische Ausstrahlung und verinnerlicht mehr klassische Rockvibes. Traurigkeit macht sich in den ersten Minuten breit, die bis ins schmerzvolle reichen, aber auch mit versöhnlichen Melodien die Seele streicheln. Wunderschön hören sich die akustischen Gitarren mit folkloristischem Flamenco-Flair im Solopart an, bevor der Song sein fulminantes Finale startet, bei dem der Song einen gefühlsmäßigen Vulkanausbruch erfährt.

 „Insidious“. Ein gnadenloser Smasher, der schon krasse Death Metal Vibes einatmet. Die Prügelorgie dröhnt unheilvoll aus den Boxen. Joseph lässt die krassesten dunkelsten Vocals aus seiner Kehle fahren. Ist man gar nicht so in dieser extremen Form gewohnt, aber es hört sich super an. Da eröffnen sich in meinem Geiste ganz neue musikalische Welten für WITHERFALL. 

EVERGREY – „Theories Of Emptiness“

Auf EVERGREY ist immer Verlass. Seit sage und schreibe drei Dekaden liefern die Schweden regelmäßig neues Material und sind schon lange eine beständige Größe in der Szene. EVERGREY haben es im Laufe ihrer Karriere geschafft wundervolle Musik zu erschaffen, der mit prachtvollen Melodien ausgestattet ist, bei denen oft auch eine melancholische Grundnote vorhanden ist. Die Musik vermittelt eine beeindruckende Erhabenheit. Es werden epische Welten erschaffen, in die man tief eintauchen kann. Dafür sorgen die mit viel Gefühl arrangierten Songs, die neben ihrer primär melodischen Großartigkeit ebenfalls kraftvoll und sogar sehr heavy rüberkommen.

Wow! Was ist denn hier los? Der Song „Cold Dreams“ hat die krassesten und aggressivsten Momente auf dieser musikalischen Reise zu bieten, was man Gastsänger Jonas Renske zu verdanken hat. Die dauern zwar nicht so lange an, aber wirken umso heftiger, weil man damit überhaupt nicht rechnet, denn der Song beginnt doch eher harmlos, mit einer bedächtigen Melancholie. Doch ab Minute 02:20 bricht dann die Hölle los. Wer hätte gedacht, dass EVERGREY so finster klingen können. Zugegeben ist es meinem persönlichen Geschmack geschuldet, dass ich mir vorstellen könnte mehr solcher Passagen bei EVERGREY zu hören. Aber das könnten andere Fans durchaus anders sehen. 

EVERGREY geben sich nicht damit zufrieden einen Gipfel erklommen zu haben, um sich dort auszuruhen. Mit ihrem ungebrochenen Ehrgeiz und ihrer Liebe zur Musik streben sie fortwährend nach mehr. Sie wollen höhere und andere Gipfel erklimmen, um ihre Sicht auf die Dinge zu erweitern, einen anderen Blickwinkel zu bekommen. So schaffen sie es auch nach drei Dekaden in ihrem musikalischen Universum immer wieder neue leuchtende Sterne und wunderschöne Galaxien entstehen zu lassen. Dies ist ihnen auch mit „Theories Of Emptiness“ mehr als gelungen. Sie können mit viel Stolz und Freude auf ihre grandioses Monument „Theories Of Emptiness“ blicken. Wer eine faszinierende Reise nicht verpassen möchte, der sollte in das EVERGREY-Universum eintauchen. (full review)

WORMWOOD – „The Star“ 

WORMWOOD sind gar nicht so einfach in ein Genre einzuordnen. Grundsätzlich spielen sie extremen Metal, der zwar viele Elemente des Black Metal beinhaltet, aber eben nicht nur. Wer aber auf progressiven hochatmosphärischen Metal steht, der mit diversen Stimmungen spielt und sich auch nicht scheut neben den martialischen Konzepten ebenso ruhigere besonnene Phasen zu enthüllen, der ist hier goldrichtig. WORMWOOD verbinden Klassik und Moderne in einer bemerkenswerten Art und Weise, so dass die einzelnen Songs immer wieder mit besonderen Charakteristika auftreten.

Der Song „Ro“ verdeutlicht wohl am deutlichsten, was WORMWOOD ausmacht. Es ist nichts weniger als ein prachtvolles Kunstwerk, dass den Hörer mit einer einzigartigen faszinierenden Atmosphäre ins Geschehen zieht und nicht mehr loslässt. Dabei mögen sicherlich viele Hörer beim ersten Hören etwas verwundert sein, denn der Beginn des Songs klingt mal so gar nicht nach brachialem Extreme Metal. Mit einer bedächtigen Ruhe wird der epische Song eingeleitet. Seichte cleane Gitarrenklänge mit sphärischen Synthies werden alsbald von leichten Gesängen begleitet, die etwas beruhigendes, gar hypnotisches ausstrahlen. Nach drei Minuten der Besinnung kehren die Geister des Black Metal ein und harte melodische Riffs feiern ihren Einstand. Die obligatorischen harschen Finstervocals dürfen natürlich nicht fehlen. Die Band intoniert aber weiterhin großartige melodische Momente. Das Gitarrensolo ist eine traumhafte Erscheinung. Die klangvollen Riffs sorgt fortwährend für ein episches Feeling. Der Song verkörpert aber zudem ein tiefes emotionales Erlebnis. Dafür sorgt Sänger Nine mit seinen expressiven Vocals.

WORMWOOD brillieren mit gigantischen Songs, die uns in gewaltige Welten des Extreme Metal führen. Die unwiderstehliche Anziehungskraft entsteht durch bis ins kleinste ausgetüftelte Kompositionen, die eine atemberaubende Atmosphäre erschaffen, die nicht imposanter sein könnte. „The Star“ ist ein großartiges Werk! IOTUNN – „Kinship“ 

IOTUNN haben mit „Kinship“ eine große Geschichten geschrieben, die den Hörer in gigantische Erlebnisse hineinziehen. Das Album offenbart eine wunderbare Epik, die perfekt inszeniert ist, so dass man voller Faszination die musikalische Geschichte verfolgt. Wenn mich der Fährmann irgendwann einmal an die ewigen Gestade überführt, wäre „Kinship“ der Soundtrack, den ich dabei wählen würde. Auf jeden Fall einer der Höhepunkte in diesem Jahr. Ein extrem beeindruckendes Album.

Nicht nur gesanglich bieten IOTUNN großes Kino. Neben epischen Ausbrüchen überzeugen IOTUNN mit kraftvollen Stimmen, die auch mal durch die Verwendung von Growls in die extreme Schiene geraten. Unterstützt wird dies mit einer dynamisch athletischen Instrumentierung, die mit ganz viel melodischer Kunst veredelt wird. Dabei geht es dann auch mal richtig deftig zur Sache. Dies kann man wunderbar anhand des Songs „Mistland“ feststellen, der sich in der zweiten Hälfte sich in ein dunkles Monster verwandelt. Die Melodien bleiben allerdings immer ein Teil des Sounds. Mit dem letzten zwei Minuten bekommt der Song noch einmal eine schöne Wendung mit kolossalen Vocals. (full review)

NIGHTWISH – „Yesterwynde“

NIGHTWISH sind sicherlich nicht nur für mich das Synonym für progressiven Symphonic Metal und gehören zu den Wegbereitern dieses Genres. Epik ist einer der Begriffe, den man mit NIGHTWISH sicherlich sofort verbinden würde. NIGHTWISH malen großartige fantastische musikalische Bilder, was in der Vergangenheit auch schon zu sehr ausufernden Songs führte. Auf „Yesterwynde“ erhebt sich der längste Song auf dem Album direkt nach dem klassischen Intro mit schön klingenden sakralen Chören. Schon hier fällt die großartige Produktion auf. Der Klang ist einfach der Hammer. High End würde man da wohl zu sagen. 

Alles ist perfekt aufeinander abgestimmt und man wird förmlich in ein großartiges Abenteuer hineingezogen. Es passiert viel im Sound, aber dank der perfekten Produktion kann man jede Kleinigkeit wunderbar heraushören, was zu einer sehr intensiven Erfahrung führt. Jedes Instrument wird so in den Fokus gerückt, wie es gerade gebraucht wird. Und auch die harten Gitarrenriffs werden nicht vergessen, was ich sehr befürworte. „An Ocean Of Strange Islands“ ist ein Beispiel für die faszinierenden Offenbarungen auf diesem Album, bei dem man sogar am Ende noch mit traumhaften Folksounds aufwartet eines irischen Dudelsacks für außergewöhnliche Momente sorgt.

NIGHTWISH würdigen ihre Karriere mit dem genialen zehnten Album „Yesterwynde“. Sie haben sich mit „Yesterwynde“ selbst übertroffen und ein Denkmal gesetzt. Es ist von Anfang bis Ende eine ungeheuerlich beeindruckende Reise. Es gibt kein Kapitel der Geschichte auf „Yesterwynde“, welches man ungehört lassen sollte. Das opulente Werk ist perfekt inszeniert, wobei musikalische Fäden fantasievoll miteinander verwoben werden und eine wundervolle Magie entfalten. (full review)

Let’s move on to the last part of my METALHEADs Toplist, which deals with progressive metal. It’s a very exciting and interesting category, because progressive music comes in many different genres. So here is the selection from 2024.

COSMIC JAGUAR „El Era Del Jaguar“

COSMIC JAGUAR are actually a thrash metal band, but if you consider the band’s classification here as progressive metal, it should be clear to everyone that COSMIC JAGUAR don’t play „normal“ thrash metal. There are no songs that are simply beaten through from front to back in a structured manner. The songs are much more intricate and some of them are so crazy that they give off a real jazz vibe for me. For attentive listeners who are enthusiastic about technically complex songs that go beyond the norm, this is a real treat.

The songs are packed with technical tricks. The songwriting is incredibly complex and unpredictable. There are hardly any catchy passages because the songwriting doesn’t follow any particular pattern. There are constant changes of direction and if you’re not careful, it’s easy to lose yourself in the web of instrumental chaos. But there is a method to the chaos and it reveals a veritable firework of musical skills.(full review)

GHOST ON MARS – „Out Of Time And Space“ 

It took GHOST ON MARS from Italy five years to complete their long-player debut „Out Of Time And Space“ after their EP „Lost Signals“. But it was worth it, because the album is wonderful. I didn’t know this band at all before and they completely won me over with their songs straight away and it deserves to be on the 2024 top list.

The sound is generally heavier and is also characterized by robust riffs and a tight bass. The vocals, on the other hand, are kept clean, at least most of the time. In the second song „Quarantine“, which is dark and powerful, there are flashes of growls, but it should be said that this remains the exception. It is more of a short-term atmospheric effect that supports the dark theme here. In general, the vocals are very melodic. I like the melancholic aura, which repeatedly escalates into eerily intense moments.

With „Out Of Time And Space“, GHOST ON MARS have succeeded in creating a very remarkable debut album. Extremely mature songs that touch the listener with many fascinating and poignant moments, but at the same time also act with powerful, crisp heaviness. The performance of all the band members is superb, with the incredibly strong guitar work providing dreamlike moments. In addition, singer Moreno shows many facets, even extreme approaches, which provide great surprises on the journey. So it should be highly exciting to see in which direction the future will take them. But first we can devote ourselves to the fantastic „Out Of Time And Space“, which invites us on a monumental journey through various spheres. (full review)

FACTORY OF ART – „Back To Life“

It is true art that FACTORY OF ART present to us here. It becomes clearer with every moment of listening that they are once again accomplishing their aforementioned mission with ’summa cum laude‘. The guild of highly professional musicians probably wanted to make it unmistakably clear what a great, exceptional band they are. FACTORY OF ART give us an intense eargasm with their new album „Back To Life“.

The decoupled single „Blessing In Disguise“ is also a gem. It was the first song I heard from the new album and it blew me away. The beginning, with the vocals of a real choir (ARMACORD), is simply brilliant and wonderful. And what then pours into your ears is no less impressive. Once again, so many impressions come crashing down on you that I had to listen to the song at least five times in a row to fully appreciate it in all its splendor. Wonderful, indeed equally powerful melodies form a fascinating symbiosis. This mixture is excellently realized both instrumentally and vocally. Even growls find their place here.

My expectations were high and yet they were exceeded. Every song is a work of art. This creativity and attention to detail, plus the courage to go beyond boundaries, can be felt in every song. But that’s what characterizes FACTORY OF ART. A precious quality feature! But I really didn’t expect this! Fantastic! If you like sophisticated, professional and captivating progressive metal, you’ve definitely come to the right place. Let yourself be carried away and enchanted! (full review)

LOCH VOSTOK – „Opus Ferox II-Mark Of The Beast“

LOCH VOSTOK have created a very individual sound that stands out from the crowd and has a strong recognition value. This is also thanks to the incredibly good singer Jonas Radehorn, who reveals fantastic versions of his voice with an incredible amount of charisma. The new album begins with a straightforward, heavy burner by the band’s standards.

„Distant Assistance“ thunders through your ears at full attack. But of course progressive structures are fused with fine details here. I am immediately reminded of how much craftsmanship the musicians use. The drums are infernal, the vocals phenomenal! The guitar riffs are on fire and the solo with lots of shredding fuel ignites at full throttle. LOCH VOSTOK have thus achieved a perfect catapult start. I think it’s positive that LOCH VOSTOK are showing off a new level of heaviness.

The songs on „Opus Ferox II-Mark Of The Beast“ interweave the various musical threads even more finely, but the band also scales new heights of heaviness. The atmospheric component is even more important, creating a darker world compared to its predecessor. LOCH VOSTOK have thus consistently pursued their creative path, inviting us once again on a very special progressive musical adventure. We should accept this wonderful invitation! It is an exciting journey! (full review)

THE MOOR – „Ombra“

With their new album „OMBRA“, THE MOOR have created a true masterpiece. The complex arrangements are incredibly good and masterfully realized, as they don’t sound complicated at all despite their complex nature. Everything is in a flow, fits together and is also sometimes wonderfully catchy. The melodic death metal with a deep atmosphere extends into epic realms. It convinces and fascinates in every moment. Enrico is an outstanding singer whose fantastic vocals crown the songs.

The title track „Ombra“ is an epic revelation. The impressive synths are one of the reasons for this. The lyrics sung in Italian are particularly fascinating. And even though I may be repeating myself, the perfectly arranged songs are extremely captivating. The combination of haunting heaviness and enchanting harmonies is simply spectacular. The superbly played guitar solos provide magical moments time and again. Enrico also manages to create very different emotions with his diverse vocals, which can definitely be described as outstanding.

THE MOOR manage to completely convince with every single song. Every song moves in the same musical world, but has many experiences to offer. The characteristics of the individual songs are brilliantly realized and always reveal new experiences. (full review)

WITHERFALL „Sounds Of The Forgotten“

WITHERFALL have long been an insider’s tip in the scene and have since been able to gather a considerable loyal fanbase around them. With „Sounds Of The Forgotten“, WITHERFALL shine as usual with high-class songs that reveal both artful songwriting and technical prowess at the highest level. At times, WITHERFALL are more aggressive and extreme than ever before, but at the same time enchant with wonderful melodies and skillful arrangements. Stylistically, the band is influenced by many eras and styles of metal and rock. In addition, WITHERFALL have succeeded in creating a dense atmosphere, which gives the sound depth and richness.

„When It Falls Away“ has a distinctly melancholic vibe and internalizes more classic rock vibes. Sadness spreads in the first few minutes, reaching into the painful, but also caressing the soul with conciliatory melodies. The acoustic guitars with folkloristic flamenco flair in the solo part sound beautiful before the song starts its brilliant finale, in which the song experiences an emotional eruption.

 „Insidious“. A merciless smasher that breathes in blatant death metal vibes. The bludgeoning orgy booms ominously from the speakers. Joseph lets the crassest darkest vocals out of his throat. You’re not used to it in this extreme form, but it sounds great. It opens up whole new musical worlds for WITHERFALL in my mind.

EVERGREY – „Theories Of Emptiness“

You can always rely on EVERGREY. For no less than three decades, the Swedes have regularly delivered new material and have long been a constant in the scene. Over the course of their career, EVERGREY have managed to create wonderful music with magnificent melodies that often have a melancholy undertone. The music conveys an impressive sublimity. Epic worlds are created into which one can immerse oneself deeply. This is ensured by the songs, which are arranged with great feeling and, in addition to their primarily melodic magnificence, also come across as powerful and even very heavy.

Wow! What’s going on here? The song „Cold Dreams“ has the most blatant and aggressive moments on this musical journey, thanks to guest vocalist Jonas Renske. Although they don’t last that long, they seem all the more violent because you don’t expect them at all, as the song begins rather harmlessly, with a thoughtful melancholy. But from minute 02:20, all hell breaks loose. Who would have thought that EVERGREY could sound so dark. Admittedly, it’s due to my personal taste that I could imagine hearing more passages like this on EVERGREY. But other fans might see it differently.

EVERGREY are not satisfied with having climbed a peak and resting there. With her unwavering ambition and her love for music, they are constantly striving for more.They want to climb higher and different peaks in order to broaden their view of things and gain a different perspective. Even after three decades, they still manage to create new shining stars and beautiful galaxies in their musical universe. They have more than succeeded in doing this with „Theories Of Emptiness“. WORMWOOD – „The Star“ 

WORMWOOD are not so easy to categorize into a genre. Basically, they play extreme metal that contains many elements of black metal, but not only. However, if you like progressive, highly atmospheric metal that plays with various moods and is not afraid to unveil quieter, more level-headed phases alongside the martial concepts, then this is the album for you. WORMWOOD combine classic and modern in a remarkable way, so that the individual songs always appear with special characteristics.

The song „Ro“ is probably the clearest illustration of what WORMWOOD is all about. It is nothing less than a magnificent work of art that draws the listener into the action with a unique, fascinating atmosphere and never lets go. Many listeners may be a little surprised when they first hear it, because the beginning of the song doesn’t sound like brute extreme metal at all. The epic song is introduced with a deliberate calm. Shallow, clean guitar sounds with spherical synths are soon accompanied by light vocals that radiate something calming, even hypnotic.

After three minutes of contemplation, the spirits of black metal return and hard melodic riffs celebrate their debut. Of course, the obligatory harsh dark vocals are not to be missed. However, the band continues to intonate great melodic moments. The guitar solo is a dreamlike phenomenon. The sonorous riffs constantly create an epic feeling. The song also embodies a deep emotional experience. Singer Nine makes sure of this with his expressive vocals.

WORMWOOD shine with gigantic songs that take us into vast worlds of extreme metal. The irresistible attraction is created by compositions that have been worked out down to the smallest detail, creating a breathtaking atmosphere that couldn’t be more impressive. „The Star“ is a magnificent work.(full review)

IOTUNN – „Kinship“ 

With „Kinship“, IOTUNN have written a great story that draws the listener into gigantic experiences. The album reveals a wonderful epicness that is perfectly orchestrated so that you follow the musical story with fascination. If the ferryman ever takes me to the eternal shores, „Kinship“ would be the soundtrack I would choose. Definitely one of the highlights of this year. An extremely impressive album!

IOTUNN offer great cinema not only vocally. In addition to epic outbursts, IOTUNN convince with powerful vocals, which sometimes go to extremes by using growls. This is supported by a dynamically athletic instrumentation, which is refined with a lot of melodic art. Sometimes things get really heavy. This can be seen wonderfully in the song „Mistland“, which turns into a dark monster in the second half. However, the melodies always remain part of the sound. With the last two minutes, the song takes another beautiful turn with colossal vocals.(full review)

NIGHTWISH – „Yesterwynde“

NIGHTWISH are certainly the synonymous for progressive symphonic metal. Epic is one of the terms that you would certainly immediately associate with NIGHTWISH. NIGHTWISH paint great fantastic musical pictures, which in the past has also led to very sprawling songs. On „Yesterwynde“, the longest song on the album rises directly after the classic intro with beautiful sounding sacred choirs. The great production is already noticeable here. The sound is simply awesome. You would probably call it high end.

Everything is perfectly coordinated and you are literally drawn into a great adventure. There is a lot going on in the sound, but thanks to the perfect production you can hear every little detail wonderfully, which leads to a very intense experience. Each instrument is brought into focus just as it is needed. And the heavy guitar riffs are not forgotten either, which I very much approve of. „An Ocean Of Strange Islands“ is an example of the fascinating revelations on this album, which even ends with the dreamlike folk sounds of an Irish bagpipe for some extraordinary moments.

NIGHTWISH pay tribute to their career with the brilliant tenth album „Yesterwynde“. They have outdone themselves with „Yesterwynde“ and created a monument. It is a tremendously impressive journey from start to finish. There is no chapter of the story on „Yesterwynde“ that should be left unheard. The opulent work is perfectly orchestrated, with musical threads imaginatively woven together to create a wonderful magic.(full review)
