METALHEADs Toplist 2023 – Death Metal
(scroll down for english version)
‚METALHEADs Toplist 2023 – Death Metal‘: NIGHT IN GALES, RISE TO FALL, SWANSONG, VISCERA, PRONOSTIC, ORBIT CULTURE! Also fiel mir die Auswahl tatsächlich wahnsinnig schwer.
NIGHT IN GALES
RISE TO FALL
RISE TO FALL bleiben ihrem Stil treu und präsentieren modern orientierten Melodic Death Metal. Geiler Track! „Beam Of Light“ geht in einer ähnliche Richtung.
„Blood Widow“ an.
(Review)
„Rats With Wings“
PRONOSTIC
BEST (MELODIC) DEATH METAL ALBUM 2023
ORBIT CULTURE
„From The Inside“
english version
‚METALHEADs Toplist 2023 – Death Metal‘: NIGHT IN GALES, RISE TO FALL, SWANSONG, VISCERA, PRONOSTIC, ORBIT CULTURE! This year I have a luxury problem in this category. There have been a hell of a lot of great albums released in the field of (melodic) Death Metal. So it was actually incredibly difficult for me to choose. But it has to be done!
So here are my biggest highlights, although I have to admit that I personally like the melodic and modern Death Metal more. If you prefer the classic old school Death Metal sound, you should definitely listen to the new albums by OBITUARY („Dying Of Everything“), CANNIBAL CORPSE („Chaos Horrific“) oder FROZEN SOUL („Glacial Domination“)!
NIGHT IN GALES
NIGHT IN GALES (Facebook)are probably the band in this list that implements melodic death metal in a more classic way. There are no crossovers into other genres or the use of clean vocals. The long-established band remains true to its line and doesn’t dare to experiment. They play at an absolutely high level and damn well. With this attitude, they thrilled my colleague ‚Moldi‘. He draws the following conclusion in his review:
After „The Last Sunsets“ and „Dawnlight Garden“, Night in Gales has achieved its third stroke of genius in a row with „The Black Stream“. The work picks up seamlessly where its predecessors left off. And you can’t thank the band enough for staying true to their line. No clear vocals, no keyboards, no children’s choirs, no droning, no core influences, just old-school melodic Death Metal. I hardly know any other band that combines outstanding melodies with the right amount of heaviness so skillfully.
Review ‚metal-heads.de‘ (24.09.2023)
And we are not alone in this opinion, as the album „The Black Stream“ made it to position 77 in the German album charts. And if we’re honest, this achievement is worth so much more as a death metal band.
RISE TO FALL
RISE TO FALL (Homepage/Facebook) have also been in the business for a few years, 17 years to be precise. Over the years, they have built up an excellent reputation in the scene, not only thanks to great studio albums, but also through countless live gigs.
RISE TO FALL present melodic Death Metal. In some parts on the new album „The Fifth Dimension“ becomes more modern. In general the songs live from the martial verses with the extreme vocals and the harmonious clean sung choruses. They extend the range a little further and present a very modern, catchy number with „Heroes“. This is not meant to be negative. RISE TO FALL give us a highly melodic banger that captivates with an epic chorus. Okay, this song lives more from clean vocals than from martial growls and this is not typical Death Metal. But for me these are exactly the moments I wish for. These are different songs there the band leave their usual ways. But I don’t hold it against them, because it is a great song with emotional charisma in a tough guise. There is even a massive outburst in between. Awesome track!
Of course, RISE TO FALL also have enough hard-hitting songs at the start to really blow you away. So nobody needs to worry about their neck remaining untrained. „Hierophant“, for example, is convincing both in its mid-tempo passages and in the driving, furious parts. The mix on the album is therefore very entertaining.
RISE TO FALL show no weakness and deliver a first-class album with „The Fifth Dimension“. With its modern focus, the songs are catchy and highly melodic, but still offer enough crunching heaviness to blow you away. You won’t find any boring filler material on the album. The songs are all great and burst with electrifying energy. (Review)
SWANSONG
SWANSONG (Facebook) from Finland should not be missing from this list with their debut album „Awakening“. It is one of the albums that surprised me with its fresh, unusual sound and impressive craftsmanship.
SWANSONG sound hard, but play in an incredibly melodic way, so that the sound even often has a Heavy Metal vibe to it. The sound is given a hellish touch by singer Jemiina, who sweeps around with devilish vocals that will scare you. The sound mix is really damn exciting and interesting. Just listen to „Blood Widow“, for example. That’s a really killer song! The hellish vocals sound downright devastating! But I also like the overall appearance of the song. The riffing on this mid-tempo destroyer is nicely varied, from super nasty to melodic.
„Burning Flames“, on the other hand, is a driving song that demonstrates the band’s outstanding qualities just as impressively. Here you also get to hear one of Topi Pitkänen’s many famous guitar solos, and SWANSONG’s guitar work is truly outstanding in all respects and runs through the entire album. It is not always typical for melodic death metal, but is often surprisingly relaxed and light, such as on the second song „Become“, whose melodic riffing gets stuck in your head.
SWANSONG present an immensely strong debut with „Awakening“. This is an interesting take on melodic death metal, which features a blatant extreme vocalist and also boasts some great guitar work. It is a collection of first-class songs that have many highlights to offer. „Awakening“ is a more than a successful debut. It’s outstanding. (Review)
„Burning Flames“
VISCERA
VISCERA (Facebook) have released their album „Carcinogenesis“. Wow…What a blast! You can expect a mixture of melodic Death Metal with Deathcore influences, which is reflected here and there in massive breakdowns and very extreme dark growls. Vocally, you get the full punch here. Singer Jamie Graham handles the songs flawlessly and embodies the necessary power that the powerful sound demands. He offers aggressive, dynamic vocals, explores the darkest realms, sometimes lets out nasty screams in higher pitches as in the song „Lex Talionis“ and then convinces in the chorus with a powerful vein.
The rhythm section with its beastly drums and powerful bass are no less impressive and create real explosions. There are blastbeatattacks, raining down like a hailstorm. The breathtaking guitar leads not only turn out to be a melodic component, but also impress with high technical skills.
VISCERA unleash hell on earth on their second album „Carcinogenesis“. This is high quality Death Metal, which inspires with its brute force, many subtleties and technical refinements. The album doesn’t just shake the earth, it shreds everything in a bloodcurdling assault.(Review)
„Rats With Wings“
PRONOSTIC
PRONOSTIC (Facebook) come from Canada. The core line-up currently consists of three men. Their second album „Chaotic Upheaval“ offers 10 songs with under 40 minutes of music. But let me tell you that a lot happens and hits you during this time. Everything happens at a very high technical level and also has a progressive character.
The vocals are handled by the two guitarists, with Charles P. Pilotte responsible for the dark growls and Alexandre Lauzon for the screams. It should be noted that there are no clean vocals on the entire album. In addition, the level of detail in the songs is very high, which was realized together with several guest musicians. Despite its partly progressive approach, it doesn’t sound too convoluted and complicated. The brutal heaviness of the sound is presented in a highly melodic way.
Saxophone in death metal
But to briefly touch on a wow moment, I’ll mention the song „Massive Disillusion“. Within the brutal storm that is unleashed, the calm eye of the storm suddenly unfolds. An atmospheric part with bluesy guitar playing, followed by a fantastic saxophone solo. That is so damn brilliant.
PRONOSTIC perfect their sound with a progressive approach, which allows them to shine with some unusual and surprising moments. Together with their technical sophistication, PRONOSTIC create a lively sound which, in its fundamentally bitter appearance, inspires with wonderful melodic accents and a wealth of ideas. (Review)
„Indefinte Continuity“
ORBIT CULTURE
ORBIT CULTURE (Homepage/Facebook) from Sweden are one of the few bands that have managed to inspire me with every album. Since writing for ‚metal-heads.de‘, I had the honor to review both the album „Nija“ (Review 2020) and the EP „Shaman“ (Review 2021). Both scored a full 10 points. The albums before „Nija“ were also of exquisite quality. I was therefore very happy to be able to conduct an interview with frontman Niklas in October 2021. My editorial colleague ‚Soundchaser‘ had the honor to admire ORBIT CULTURE live in Cologne on July 9th. And he also seemed very impressed and had only words of praise for the music and the live qualities of the Swedes (concert review).
Album „Descent“
It gets even more hard and epic! ORBIT CULTURE have continued their search for dark and powerful demons and found them! A whole 10 of them are just waiting to haunt you on „Descent“. ORBIT CULTRUE have fulfilled their mission 100%. And if you thought the production sounded so damn powerful and fat beforehand, you’ll be proven wrong with the new album. Unbelievable, but true!
With „Descent“, ORBIT CULTURE unleash an epic hellish sound that turns everything to dust with sheer unbridled energy. It seems that all the forces of nature unite to form an unbridled monster. (Review)
(It should also be mentioned that ORBIT CULTURE even released the EP „The Forgotten“ in December. There are also some great songs on it.)
