MYSTIC PROPHECY-„Hellriot“ Review

Wenn man eine beständige Größe im deutschen Heavy Metal nennen müsste, dann würden MYSTIC PROPHECY wohl eindeutig dazu gehören. Sie liefern regelmäßig hochwertige Alben ab und die Live-Shows sind immer der Hammer. Davon konnte ich mich erst im Februar beim Konzert in der Zeche Bochum überzeugen (Konzertbericht Zeche Bochum). Nun wurde am 19. Mai das zwölfte!!! Album „Hellriot“ veröffentlicht.

Wird es Überraschungen geben?

Das kann man eindeutig verneinen. Das dürfte einerseits viele Fans freuen, denn man bekommt die gewohnt hochwertige Qualität geboten. Andererseits könnten andere behaupten, dass man sich als Band selbst recycelt. Dabei stellt sich oft die Frage, ob man überhaupt überrascht werden möchte. Auf diese Frage werde ich am Schluss noch mal eingehen. Jetzt möchte ich doch erst einmal den Eindruck vom Album „Hellriot“ darlegen.

Astreiner Heavy Metal

Sobald man die ersten Töne vernommen hat, wird man feststellen, dass die Produktion absolut erste Sahne ist. Besser kann man es wohl nicht machen. Der Sound ist der Wahnsinn! So dröhnt nicht nur der Titelsong „Hellriot“ als Opener mit mächtig Dampf aus den Boxen, so dass man die Power rundum auch satt körperlich zu spüren bekommt. Alles kommt wunderbar zur Geltung und es ist nicht so eine weichgespülte Produktion, wo man sich fragt, ob das noch Metal ist.

Es wird keiner erwarten, dass hier lyrisch anspruchsvolle Texte dargeboten werden, denn es soll schließlich krachen und auch live hervorragend funktionieren. Dementsprechend sind die Texte einfach gehalten und mit dem genreüblichen Vokabular versehen, so dass man alles auf Anhieb versteht und auch mit einem gewissen Alkoholpegel immer leicht mitgröhlen kann.

Spaß macht das allemal! Der heroische eingängige Charakter ist nun mal ein Markenzeichen der Band und den repräsentieren MYSTIC PROPHECY in Perfektion. Zum Glück bewegt man sich aber weit abseits des mittlerweile harmlosen (aber trotzdem erfolgreichen) Pop-Metal-Sounds von ‚Sabaton‘ oder ‚Powerwolf‘. Beide Bands habe ich mal sehr geschätzt, aber mittlerweile kann ich das nicht mehr so ernst nehmen.

Das ist der Weg!

Getreu dieser mandalorianischen Parole (Star Wars-Fans werden es kennen) schlagen sich MYSTIC PROPHECY mit ihren gewohnt scharfen musikalischen Waffen durch die Metalwelt. So feiert man sie, so liebt man sie. Die Riffs fetzen, die Solos elektrisieren und die Drums prügeln wie die Sau.

Es gibt treibende Songs wie den oben gezeigten Titelsong „Hellriot“ oder „Revenge And Fire“, wo mir beim zweitgenannten die feurigen Gitarrensolos besonders imponieren. Dann lassen monumentale Midtempo-Kracher wie „Unholy Hell“ oder „Paranoia“ das Herz höher schlagen. Frontmann Lia schmettert die Hymnen in gewohnt eindrucksvoller und mitreißender Manier.

Wohin führt der Weg?

Ich mag MYSTIC PROPHECY sehr, doch mir stelllt sich tatsächlich die Frage, wohin deren Weg führen wird. MYSTIC PROPHECY sind eine gut geölte Metal-Maschine, auf die immer Verlass ist. Der Sound ist perfekt getunt und es gibt keinerlei Fehlzündungen. Aber wenn man sich die vorherigen Alben anhört, dann gibt es eben auch keine Innovationen. Ich könnte mir schon vorstellen, dass man das Rezept in Zukunft mal ein wenig variieren könnte, um nicht Gefahr zu laufen sich selbst weiter zu kopieren und im Kreis zu fahren.

Fazit

MYSTIC PROPHECY haben ihren Sound mit dem Album „Hellriot“ produktionstechnisch perfektioniert. Das ist absolute ist Endstufe. Es werden einwandfreie Heavy-Metal-Songs gerockt, die wieder einmal geile Hymnen hervorbringen. Wer alle anderen Alben der Band liebt und sich auch weiterhin an dem Sound nicht satthören kann, der wird auch dieses Album lieben und die Höchstpunktzahl vergeben.

Auch ich bin ein Fan der Band, sehe das Ganze aber etwas kritischer. Für mich bleibt es ein gutes Album mit Abstrichen, was die Kreativität beim Songwriting angeht. Da wäre für meinen Geschmack zukünftig Luft nach oben. Trotzdem kann man dem Album nicht seine Qualität absprechen und so landet es in der Acht-Punkte-Zone.

Eine kleine Enttäuschung

war dann aber die Vinyl, die ich bestellt habe. Es war die Green /Firey Splatter-Version und sie kam pünktlich am Veröffentlichungstag an. Das ist ja schon mal was. Erst einmal ist es kein Gatefold. Okay… Das kann ich noch verschmerzen, aber der optische Unterschied zwischen dem Werbebild und der realen physischen Version ist eklatant. Das Werbebild sieht einfach hammermäßig aus und das Endprodukt ist zwar auch okay, hat aber mit dem Werbebild nicht viel zu tun.

Es wird zwar bei farbigen Vinyls immer darauf hingewiesen, dass es Abweichungen im Endprodukt geben kann. Aber diesmal war ich wirklich etwas enttäuscht, denn so einen Unterschied zum Werbebild hatte ich bisher noch nie erlebtz und daher auch nicht erwartet. Auch wenn die Optik nicht der Hauptaspekt beim Vinylkauf ist, so bin ich persönlich froh, wenn ich mal optisch ausgefallene Scheiben erwerben kann. Das ist etwas schade! Kann man nur hoffen, dass es sich bei den anderen Vinyl-Versionen nicht genauso verhält.

Heavy Metal

If you had to name a consistent great band in German Heavy Metal, MYSTIC PROPHECY would probably definitely belong to it. They regularly deliver high-quality albums and the live shows are always awesome. I could convince myself of this only in February at the concert in the Zeche Bochum. Now on May 19th the twelfth!!! album „Hellriot“ was released.

Will there be any surprises?

This can clearly be denied. On the one hand, this should please many fans, because you get the usual high quality. On the other hand, others might claim that you recycle your songs as a band. The question is: As a fan, do you want to be surprised or do you want to be delivered what you expect? I will come back to this question at the end. Now I would like to present nevertheless first of all the impression of the album „Hellriot“.

Pure rousing Heavy Metal

In fact, not much can be said about it. As soon as you have heard the first sounds, you will notice that the production is absolutely first class. You can’t do it better than that. The sound is insane! So not only the title track „Hellriot“ as the opener booms with so much power from the speakers, that you get to feel the sound physically. Everything comes wonderfully to the fore and it is not such a soft-washed production, where you wonder if this is still Metal.

No one will expect lyrically sophisticated lyrics to be presented here, because after all it’s supposed to crash and also work excellently live. Accordingly, the lyrics are kept simple and provided with the genre-standard vocabulary, so that you understand everything right away and can always easily roar along even with some alcohol inside.

This is fun in any case! The heroic catchy character is a trademark of the band and MYSTIC PROPHECY represent it in perfection. Fortunately they move far away from the meanwhile harmless (but still successful) pop metal sound of ‚Sabaton‘ or ‚Powerwolf‘. Both bands I once appreciated very much, but meanwhile I can’t take it that serious anymore.

This is the way!

True to this Mandalorian slogan (Star Wars fans will know it), MYSTIC PROPHECY strike their way through the Metal world with their usual musical sharp weapons. That’s how you celebrate them, that’s how you love them. The riffs shred, the solos electrify and the drums beat like hell.

There are driving songs like the title track „Hellriot“ shown above or „Revenge And Fire“, where I am particularly impressed by the fiery guitar solos of the latter. Then monumental mid-tempo firecrackers like „Unholy Hell“ or „Paranoia“ make the heart beat faster. Frontman Lia belts out the hymns in his usual impressive and rousing manner.

Where does the way lead?

I like MYSTIC PROPHECY very much, but I really wonder where their path will lead. MYSTIC PROPHECY are a well-oiled metal machine that can always be relied upon. The sound is perfectly tuned and there are no misfires at all. But if you listen to the previous albums, there are just no innovations. I could imagine that the recipe could be varied a little in the future, so as not to run the risk of further copying themselves and driving in circles.

Conclusion

MYSTIC PROPHECY have perfected their sound in terms of production with the album „Hellriot“. This is absolute is final stage. Flawless Heavy Metal songs are rocked, which once again produce great anthems. If you love all the band’s other albums and still can’t get enough of this sound, you’ll love this album too and give it top marks.

Although I am a fan of the band, I see it a bit more critically. For me it remains a good album with cutbacks, what concerns the creativity in songwriting. For my taste there would be more possible in the future. Nevertheless, you can not deny the album its quality and so it still lands in the eight-point zone.

A little disappointment

was the vinyl that I ordered. It was the Green /Firey Splatter vinyl version and it arrived on time on release day. First of all, it’s not a gatefold. Okay… I can still get over that, but the visual difference between the promotional image and the real physical version are glaring. The advertising image just looks awesome and the final product is also okay, but does not have much to do with the advertising image.

Although it is always pointed out with colored vinyls that there may be deviations in the final product. But this time I was really a bit disappointed, because such a difference to the advertising image I had never experienced so far and therefore not expected. Even if the optics is not the main aspect when buying vinyl, so I’m personally glad when I can sometimes visually fancy discs acquire. This is a bit of a pity! Can only hope that it is not the same with the other vinyl versions.
