BLACK & DAMNED (Facebook) hatten im Jahr 2021 ihr Debüt „Heavenly Creatures“ (Review) veröffentlicht. Ein vielseitiges vielversprechendes Album, worauf dann im Jahr 2023 „Servants Of The Devil“ (Review) folgte, dass verdammt guten Power Metal zelebrierte. Jetzt ist man mit dem dritten Album „Resurrection“ am Start.

„Silence Breaker“ eröffnet die Reise und entpuppt sich als flotter melodischer Song mit schönem Riffing. Der Refrain ist ist ebenfalls gut gelungen. Das sind wir von BLACK & DAMNED bereits ohnehin gewohnt. Der zweite Song steigert die Intensität, wobei mich die fetzigen Gitarrenleads zwischendrin besonders ansprechen. Ebenso weiß der Refrain mit dem extra dunklen „Ruthless“-Touch zu gefallen.

Tatsächlich finde ich den Einstieg in das Album gelungen, doch im weiteren Verlauf trübte sich leider mein Eindruck. Das mag sicherlich auch meinem persönlichen Geschmack geschuldet sein. Auf dem neuen Album finden sich vorrangig Midtempo-Songs und Power Balladen. Mit dem dritten Song „Red Heavens“ läutet man eine lange Phase gemäßigter musikalischer Ergüsse ein, die mir zu sehr ausufern. Denn das bei mir anfänglich entfachte Feuer wurde so nach und nach erstickt. Dabei sind die Songs an sich gar nicht so verkehrt, wie man sich beispielsweise bei „Red Heavens“ heranzieht.

Doch die kommenden Songs „Bound By The Moon“, „Circle Of Amnesia“ und „Injustice“ plätschern eher unspektakulär an mir vorüber und ich suche die kämpferische Aggressivität, welche noch auf dem letzten beiden Alben viel intensivier gespürt habe. So hatte z.B. der Midtempo-Song „Dreamhunter“ vom letzten Album mehr Biss und insgesamt gefielen mir die Arrangements besser.

Ich erinnere mich auch gerne an den abwechslungsreichen atmosphärischen Kracher „The Wardress“ auf dem Debüt. die tolle gefühlvolle Ballade „Inside“ oder auch an das starke Keybordsolo bei „Rise To Rise“ auf dem Album „Servants For The Devil“. Die symphonischen Keys sind auf „Resurrection“ leider etwas eintönig bzw. gleichförmig geworden.

Im letzten Drittel des Albums beweisen BLACK & DAMNED noch einmal, dass sie nicht ganz zahnlos geworden sind. Mit „Searing Flames“ hauen sie noch mal richtig einen raus. Der Song hat mir kraftvoll in den Arsch gebissen und mich sofort wieder hochgepusht. Diese akustische Adrenalinspritze habe ich mir direkt mehrmals gegeben. Mein Lieblingstrack auf dem Album neben „Ruthless Wrath“. „Reborn In Solitude“ begibt sich dann auch noch mal in schnellere Fahrwasser und gehört ebenfalls zu meinen Highlights auf dem Album.

Fazit

BLACK & DAMNED liefern mit „Resurrection“ ein solides Power Metal ab, bleiben aber zumindest hinter meinen Erwartungen zurück. Die Band offenbart bei einigen Songs ihre Stärken und brennen echt gute mitreißende Songfackeln ab, aber verharren größtenteils in den gleichen behäbigen Strukturen. Ich würde mir wünschen, dass BLACK & DAMNED wieder mehr Biss und Schärfe entwickeln würden. Wer mehr auf pathetisch melancholische Atmosphäre steht, ist hier super aufgehoben.

BLACK & DAMNED (Facebook) released their debut „Heavenly Creatures“ (review) in 2021. A versatile and promising album, which was followed in 2023 by „Servants Of The Devil“ (review), which celebrated damn good power metal. Now they are back with their third album „Resurrection“.

„Silence Breaker“ opens the journey and turns out to be a lively melodic song with nice riffing. The chorus is also well done. We’re used to that from BLACK & DAMNED anyway. The second song increases the intensity, with the groovy guitar leads in between particularly appealing to me. The chorus with the extra dark „Ruthless“ touch is also appealing.

I actually found the introduction to the album successful, but unfortunately my impression dimmed as the album progressed. This may also be due to my personal taste. The new album mainly contains mid-tempo songs and power ballads. The third song, „Red Heavens“, heralds the start of a phase of moderate musical outpourings that progresses to long for me. Because the fire that was initially kindled in me was gradually smothered. And yet the songs themselves aren’t that bad, as you can hear in „Red Heavens“, for example.

But the following songs „Bound By The Moon“, „Circle Of Amnesia“ and „Injustice“ pass me by rather unspectacularly and I’m looking for the combative aggression that I felt much more intensely on the last two albums. The mid-tempo song „Dreamhunter“ from the last album, for example, had more bite and I liked the arrangements better overall.

I also remember the varied atmospheric firecracker „The Wardress“ on the debut, the great soulful ballad „Inside“ or the strong keyboard solo on „Rise To Rise“ on the album „Servants For The Devil“. Unfortunately, the (symphonic) keys on „Resurrection“ have become somewhat monotonous or uniform.

In the last third of the album, BLACK & DAMNED prove once again that they have not become completely toothless. With „Searing Flames“ they really kick ass again. The song powerfully bit me in the ass and immediately got me pumped up again. I gave myself this acoustic adrenaline shot several times. My favorite track on the album next to „Ruthless Wrath“. „Reborn In Solitude“ then moves also into faster waters and is also one of my highlights on the album.

Conclusion

BLACK & DAMNED deliver solid power metal with „Resurrection“, but fall short of my expectations at least. The band reveal their strengths on a few songs and deliver some really good, rousing banger, but for the most part they remain in the same ponderous structures. I wish BLACK & DAMNED would develop more bite and edge again. If you’re more into pathetic, melancholic atmospheres, this album is a good choice for you.

In der ‚METALHEADs Toplist 2023 – Power Metal‘ finden sich keine großen Namen der Szene. Das liegt nicht daran, dass ich mich nur mit Underground Bands beschäftige. Vielmehr haben mich die großen Bands nicht so sehr begeistern können. So ist das eben! Große Namen bedeuten nicht immer auch tolle Alben. Aber das ist natürlich wie immer persönlicher Geschmack. Also hier sind meine Favoriten des Jahres 2023 im Bereich Power Metal.

GREYDON FIELDS

Darauf mussten die Fans lange warten. Über drei Jahre nach ihrem erfolgreichen Album „Warbird“ im Jahr 2020 haben GREYDON FIELDS (Facebook) zum Ende des Jahres das neue Album „Otherworld“ veröffentlicht. Sie haben die Zeit aber sehr gut genutzt, denn das neue Album schafft es locker mit dem Vorgängeralbum mitzuhalten und sogar noch zu überflügeln.

Ich habe GREYDON FIELDS einfach mal dem Power Metal zugeordnet, obwohl man sie auch beim Heavy Metal unterbringen könnte. Aber was solls! Jetzt sind sie hier in der Toplist gelandet. Hauptsache sie sind dabei! Das coole Cover Artwork stammt übrigens von KILLUSTRATIONS, der kreativen Schmiede von Björn Gooßes. Da gibt es übrigens auch ein Interview bei uns.

Die markante Stimme von Sänger Volker ist wirklich besonders. So wird dem Sound ein weiterer individueller Stempel aufgedrückt. Und man hat sich allerlei einfallen lassen, um dieser Stimme einen würdigen Rahmen zu bieten und sie in verschiedenen Lichtern erstrahlen zu lassen. Es gibt die eingängigen flotten Songs, die immer gut funktionieren. Aber auch gerade die Songs, die etwas anders sind, machen das i-Tüpfelchen auf dem Ganzen aus. Deshalb sind so atmosphärische Songs mit leicht doomigen Anleihen wie „Ratline“ oder „Talk To The Hand“ für mich genauso ansprechend wie die rüden Galoppierer „Another Dawn“ oder „Otherworld“, um nur einige Beispiele zu nennen. Dahingehend muss ich meinem Redaktionskollegen ‚Treasureman‘, der das Album rezensiert hat, vollkommen zustimmen. Ich zitiere das Fazit aus seinem Review:

„Otherworld“ bietet ausnahmslos nur gute bis sehr gute Songs und offenbart keinerlei Schwächen. Die gesamte Produktion weist eine enorme musikalische Dichte auf und macht „Otherworld“ zu unserem Greydon Fields Highlight!

BLACK & DAMNED

„Servants Of The Devil“ heißt das neue Werk der schwäbischen Formation. Bereits mit  ihrem Debütalbum „Heavenly Creatures“ konnten sie in der Szene vollkommen überzeugen. Schon dort konnte man mit Vielseitigkeit und dem Gespür für Details überzeugen. Dies setzt sich mit dem neuen Album fort.

Der Opener „Hyena’s Call“ geht flott voran und bietet einen fulminanten Einstieg in das Album. Im weiteren Verlauf setzen BLACK AND DAMNED (Facebook) aber nicht nur auf Geschwindigkeit, sondern toben sich eher im Midtempobereich aus, auch wenn zwischendurch noch mal schnellere Nummer wie „Black And Damned“ rausghehauen werden. Es gibt sogar mit „Inside“ eine hammermäßige Ballade mit einem Refrain zum dahinschmelzen ohne dabei zuviel Kitsch aufzutischen. Nicht nur hier wird deutlich, dass Sänger Roland Seidel weiter an seinen Vocals gearbeitet hat. (Review)

BLACK & DAMNED holen tief Luft, atmen den Power Metal ganz intensiv ein und pusten mit aller Kraft das erhabene Album „Servants Of The Devil“ raus, dass mit tollen Hymnen eine starke Vorstellung liefert.

„Rise To Rise“

„Ashes Of Doom“ ist bereits das vierte Album von STORMAGE (Facebook). Ich habe das Album direkt beim ersten Hören in mein Herz geschlossen. Das liegt tatsächlich an den fesselnden Songs, die sowohl Eingängigkeit und Eigenständigkeit verbinden ohne es an Spannung missen zu lassen. Beispielhaft sei das geniale „Blood Shot Eyes“ genannt, dass mit grandios klingenden Riffmelodien aufwartet. Dazu gesellen sich fantastische Gesangslinien mit einem phänomenalen Chorus. (Review)

STORMAGE liefern mit „Ashes Of Doom“ ein verdammt gutes Power Metal Album, heben sich damit entschieden von der Masse ab und setzen damit ein deutliches Zeichen in der Szene. Das Songwriting ist superb und wirkt durchweg spannend und aufregend. Wunderbare melodische Akzente runden das Gesamtbild ab.

„Put The Hammer Down“

PRIME CREATION

Nach zwei deutschen Bands kommen wir nun zu einer Band aus Schweden. PRIME CREATION (Facebook) haben dieses Jahr mit dem Album „Tell Freedom I Said Hello“ für ein Highlight gesorgt. Bereits das Cover Artwork, welches durch REMEDY ART DESIGN (Facebook) erschaffen wurde, ist eine Augenweide und gehört mit zu den eindrucksvollsten Gemälden in diesem Jahr.

Hier tummeln sich wirklich geniale Hymnen. Mit „Erased“ hat man sogar einen radiotauglichen Hit im Sortiment, der mit seinem tollen Refrain wunderbar ins Ohr geht, aber auch mit starken Riffs und wuchtigen Drums ausgestattet ist. Sänger Esa Englund ist schon ein echtes Goldkehlchen am Mikrofon, der die Songs grandios veredelt.

PRIME CREATION können aber nicht nur melodisch, sondern geben sich auch fordernd und druckvoll. Bei „Journey Through A Wasteland“ zeigen sie in einer kurzen Sequenz ab Minute 02:35, dass sie auch mal richtig nach vorne preschen können. Davon hätte ich mir persönlich noch mehr auf dem Album gewünscht. (Review)

PRIME CREATION zeigen auf ihrem Album „Tell Freedom I Said Hello“ eindrucksvoll, wie man hochatmosphärische Power-Metal-Songs erschaffen kann. Insgesamt ist es eine sehr melodische Erfahrung, die mit einer guten druckvollen Härte agiert. Über allem thront der hervorragende Sänger Esa mit seiner traumhaften Stimme.

„Dystopia“

NOVERIA

NOVERIA (Facebook) aus Italien haben mit „The Gates Of The Underworld“ ein episches Abenteuer (70 Minuten Spielzeit) der Sonderklasse musikalisch verewigt. Ich hatte beim Verfassen des Reviews bereits prophezeit, dass dieses Album sich in meiner Toplist 2023 wiederfinden wird. Und da ist es… An der Spitze im Bereich Power Metal! (Natürlich würde es auch in die Symphonic Metal oder Progressive Metal Sektion passen!)

Die Gründe dafür liegen klar auf der Hand. An diesem Meisterwerk stimmt einfach alles. Besser kann man (symphonischen) Power Metal nicht machen. Sänger Francesco ist hervorragend und wird von der Band nach allen Regeln der Kunst begleitet. Packende Gitarrenriffs inklusive himmlischer Gitarrensoli zum ausflippen und dahinschmelzen gehören hier durchgehend quasi zum guten Ton. Der Drummer Davide Calabretta ist der Hammer und lässt es gehörig krachen. Dazu die immer stimmigen Keys, welche mit einem starken Gespür für die richtigen Momente und insgesamt wohldosiert den Sound atmosphärisch beachtlich unterstützen. Und wer feiert nicht so ein feuriges Battle zwischen der Gitarre und dem Keybord ab, das man beim Song „Ascent“ genießen darf.

NOVERIA haben sich wirklich selbst übertroffen und haben mit „The Gates Of The Underworld“ ein effektvolles unvergessliches Epos erschaffen! Das ist epischer progressiver Power Metal der Extraklassse und hier gibt es auf jeder Position Maximum! Ein fabelhaftes Erlebnis, dass von der erlesenen Qualität seiner Bandmitglieder lebt so wie von einem höchst spannenden unterhaltsamen Songwriting.

POWER METAL ALBUM des Jahres 2023

The ‚METALHEADs Toplist 2023 – Power Metal‘ doesn’t include any big names from the scene. That’s not because I’m only interested in underground bands. It’s more that the big bands didn’t excite me that much this year in this genre. That’s just the way it is! Big names don’t always mean great albums. But of course, as always, that’s personal taste. So here are my favorites of the year 2023 in the field of power metal.

GREYDON FIELDS

Fans had to wait a long time for this. More than three years after their successful album „Warbird“ in 2020, GREYDON FIELDS (Facebook) released their new album „Otherworld“ at the end of the year. However, they have used the time very well, as the new album easily manages to keep up with its predecessor and even surpass it.

I’ve categorized GREYDON FIELDS as power metal, although they could also be classified as heavy metal. But I think that’s not so important! Now they’re in the top list and this is the main thing. The cool cover artwork was created by KILLUSTRATIONS, the creative forge of Björn Gooßes. By the way, there’s also an interview (german) here.

The unmistakable voice of singer Volker is remarkable. This creates more individuality on the sound. And the whole band have come up with all sorts of ideas to give this voice a worthy setting and let it shine in different lights. There are the catchy, upbeat songs that always work well. But there ar also the songs which are a little different. And these are the icing on the tasty cake. That’s why atmospheric songs with slightly doomy leanings such as „Ratline“ or „Talk To The Hand“ are just as appealing to me as the rough gallopers „Another Dawn“ or „Otherworld“, to name just a few examples. In this respect, I have to completely agree with my editorial colleague ‚Treasureman‘, who reviewed the album. I quote the conclusion from his review:

Without exception, „Otherworld“ offers only good to very good songs and reveals no weaknesses whatsoever. The entire production has an enormous musical density and makes „Otherworld“ our Greydon Fields highlight!

BLACK & DAMNED

„Servants Of The Devil“ is the name of the new album by BLACK & DAMNED (Facebook). Their debut album „Heavenly Creatures“ already made a big impression on the scene. Their versatility and flair for detail were already impressive. This continues with the new album.

The opener „Hyena’s Call“ gets off to a brisk start and offers a brilliant introduction to the album. As the album progresses, BLACK & DAMNED don’t just focus on speed, but rather create songs in the mid-tempo range, even if there are some faster songs like „Black And Damned“ in between. There’s even „Inside“, an awesome ballad with a chorus that melts you away without being too cuddly. It’s not only here that it becomes clear that singer Roland Seidel has continued to work on his vocals. (Review)

BLACK & DAMNED take a deep breath, inhale the power metal intensely and blast out the sublime album „Servants Of The Devil“ with all their might, delivering a strong performance with great anthems.

„Rise To Rise“

„Ashes Of Doom“ is already the fourth album from STORMAGE (Facebook). I took the album to my heart the first time I heard it. This is actually due to the captivating songs, which combine catchiness and originality without lacking tension. One example is the ingenious „Blood Shot Eyes“, which features great-sounding riff melodies. This is joined by fantastic vocal lines with a phenomenal chorus. (Review)

STORMAGE deliver with „Ashes Of Doom“ a damn good Power Metal album, stand out from the crowd and set a strong statement in the scene. The songwriting is superb and seems exciting and thrilling throughout. Wonderful melodic accents round off the overall picture.

„Put The Hammer Down“

PRIME CREATION

After two German bands, we now come to a band from Sweden. PRIME CREATION (Facebook) have provided a highlight this year with their album „Tell Freedom I Said Hello“. Even the cover artwork, which was created by REMEDY ART DESIGN (Facebook), is a feast for the eyes and is one of the most impressive paintings this year.

There are some really brilliant anthems here. With „Erased“, they even have a radio hit to offer, which is wonderfully catchy with its great chorus, but also features strong riffs and powerful drums. Singer Esa Englund is a golden throat on the microphone, who enhances the songs magnificently. But PRIME CREATION are not only melodic, they are also demanding and powerful. On „Journey Through A Wasteland“, they show in a short sequence from minute 02:35 that they can also push forward in an extreme way. Personally, I would have liked to hear more of this hardness on the album. (Review)

PRIME CREATION impressively show on their album „Tell Freedom I Said Hello“ how to create highly atmospheric power metal songs. Overall, it is a very melodic experience that acts with a good punchy heaviness. Above all, the excellent singer Esa towers with his gorgeous voice.

„Dystopia“

With „The Gates Of The Underworld“, NOVERIA (Facebook) from Italy have created an epic adventure (70 minutes playing time) in a class of its own. When writing this review, I had already predicted that this album would be on my top list for 2023. And here it is… At the top of the power metal section!(Of course it would also fit into the Symphonic Metal or Progressive Metal section).

The reasons for this are obvious. You can’t make (symphonic) power metal any better than this. Singer Francesco is brilliant and is accompanied by the band according to all the rules of the art. Thrilling guitar riffs, including outstanding guitar solos to freak out and melt away, are practically part of the good sound throughout. Drummer Davide Calabretta is awesome and delivers a great performance. In addition, the always harmonious keys, which support the sound atmospherically with a strong sense for the right moments and overall well-dosed. And who doesn’t enjoy a fiery battle between the guitar and the keyboard, which you can enjoy on the song „Ascent“.

NOVERIA haben sich wirklich selbst übertroffen und haben mit „The Gates Of The Underworld“ ein effektvolles unvergessliches Epos erschaffen! Das ist epischer progressiver Power Metal der Extraklassse und hier gibt es auf jeder Position Maximum! HÖRET & SEHET März´23(2) zeigt Euch wieder ausgewählte Singles aus der Playlist ‚METALHEADs new stuff‚. Den Anfang machen heute

CRUACHAN

haben zu ihrem fantastischen Album „The Living and The Dead“ (Review) ein neues Video für den Song „The Queen“ veröffentlicht. Der Song ist eine epische Reise, den CRUACHAN (Homepage / Facebook) mit einem wunderschönen Lyric Video bedacht haben. Muss man gesehen und gehört haben!

„The Queen“ ist eine Reise durch verschiedene Welten. Es startet beschwingt und fröhlich, wobei es nicht lange dauert bis Sänger Keith seine fiesen Vocals rauslässt. Man bindet folkloritische Parts ein, die zum feiern und träumen verführen und am Ende wechselt der Song in ein krachendes Finale.

BLACK & DAMNED

sind bei ‚metal-heads.de‘ keine Unbekannten. Bereits das erste Album „Heavenly Creatures“ (Review) war ne Bombe und nun folgt am 28. April das zweite Kracheralbum „Servants Of The Devil“ (Review). War die erste Single „Hyena’s Call“ von BLACK & DAMNED (Facebook) noch eine treibende Power Metal Nummer, so schraubt man das Tempo nun runter und bewegt sich im Midtepmo. Das tut der massiven Präsenz des Sounds aber keinen Abbruch. Echt ne fette Nummer mit herrlichen Riffs und auch sonst allem, was dazugehört.

DYING OATH

kommen aus Virginia und trumpfen mit modernem Metalcore auf. Es ist mittlerweile kein Geheimnis mehr und spätestens sei ARCH ENEMY weiß man, dass Frauen den Männern in Sachen Energie in nichts nachstehen. Ein sehr gelungene Mischung bieten DYING OATH (Facebook / Homepage), wo sich Frau und Mann stimmlich an den Vocals beteiligen. Ist zwar nix neues, aber hier ist es ungewöhnlich, dass Sängerin Mindy Jackson für die harten Töne zuständig ist und der Sänger Nestor Idler die cleanen Vocals beisteuert, wobei sie dies manchmal auch im Duett machen.

Der Song macht mächtig Dampf und setzt eine Menge Energie frei. Hier stimmt alles. Die Growls könnten nicht fieser und brutaler klingen und die melodischen cleanen Vocals schmeicheln sich ins Ohr. Instrumental läuft alles wie am Schnürchen. Krasse Riffs, fetter Bass und brutale Drums vereinigen sich zu einem wahrlich beeindruckenden Erlebnis.

In-Tension

sind ein krasser Kontrast zu der gerade vorgestellten Band. IN-TENSION (Facebook) kommen aus den Niederlanden und gehen die Sache melodischer an, aber eine knackige Härte kommt ebenfalls zum Vorschein. Die Sängerin Noor ist durchweg mit wundervollen cleanen Vocals am Start. Ich jedenfalls war verzaubert von ihrer wunderschönen glasklaren Stimme. Dazu gesellen sich noch atmosphärische Synthies und Keys, welche für zusätzliche Ausstrahlung sorgen und auch mit den Gitarren super harmonieren. Der progressive Ansatz des Songs ist super gelungen und in seinem Zauber geradezu episch. Eine märchenhafte Komposition!

IN-TENSION werden in nächster Zeit noch weitere Singles veröffentlichen und höchstwahrscheinlich wird noch ein Album folgen. Genaueres steht aber noch nicht fest.

CRUACHAN

have released a new video for their fantastic album „The Living and The Dead“ (Review) for the song „The Queen“. The song is an epic journey, which CRUACHAN (Homepage / Facebook) have covered with a beautiful lyric video. Must be seen and heard!

„The Queen“ is a journey through different worlds. It starts upbeat and happy, but it doesn’t take long until singer Keith lets out his nasty vocals. Folkloric parts are integrated, which seduce to celebrate and dream. At the end the song changes into a crashing finale.

BLACK & DAMNED

are well known to ‚metal-heads.de‘. Already the first album „Heavenly Creatures“ (Review) of BLACK & DAMNED (Facebook) was a bomb and now follows on April 28th the second album „Servants Of The Devil“ (Review). While the first single „Hyena’s Call“ was still a driving Power Metal beast, the tempo on „Dreamhunter“ is now lowered and moves in the mid-tempo. But this does not detract from the massive presence of the sound. Really strong sound with wonderful riffs and everything else that you wish for.

DYING OATH

come from Virginia and come up with modern Metalcore. It’s no secret anymore and since ARCH ENEMY at the latest, it’s known that women are in no way inferior to men when it comes to energy. A very exciting mixture offers DYING OATH (Facebook / Homepage), where woman and man participate vocally. It’s nothing new, but here it’s unusual that female singer Mindy Jackson is responsible for the hard tones and male singer Nestor Idler contributes the clean vocals. And they also like to sing as a duet.

The song offers a lot of power and releases a lot of energy. Everything is right in place here. The growls could not sound nastier and more brutal and the melodic clean vocals flatter themselves into the ear. Instrumentally, everything runs like clockwork. Crass riffs, fat bass and brutal drums combine to create a truly impressive experience.

In-Tension

are a stark contrast to the band presented above. IN-TENSION (Facebook) come from the Netherlands and take a more melodic approach, but a crunchy heaviness comes out as well. Vocalist Noor is on point throughout with wonderful clean vocals. I, for one, was enchanted by her beautiful crystal clear voice. In addition, there are atmospheric synths and keys, which provide additional charisma and also harmonize with the guitars. The progressive approach of the song is great and almost epic in its magic. A fairy-tale composition!

IN-TENSION will release more singles in the near future and most likely an album will follow. But more details are not fixed yet.

Power Metal

BLACK & DAMNED (Facebook/Homepage) haben im Januar 2021 quasi aus dem Nichts in kürzester Zeit ihr Debütalbum „Heavenly Creatures“ in die Metalwelt geboren. Das Album hatte nicht nur mich überzeugt, sondern wurde allgemein in den Medien sehr wohlwollend aufgenommen.

Nun wird Euch in naher Zukunft das neue Album „Servants Of The Devil“ heimsuchen, genauer gesagt am 28.04.2023. Bevor ich mir die Songs auf die Ohren gegeben habe, ist mir erst einmal das geile Cover Artwork aufgefallen, dass sehr eindrucksvoll gestaltet wurde. Ein sehr erhabenes Bild mit vielen kleinen Details, dass eine perfekte visuelle Einladung für den musikalischen Inhalt darstellt. Gleichwohl ist eine Empfehlung für die limitierte Vinyl-Ausgabe, damit man das Cover im Großformat bewundern kann. Zudem kann die Vinyl-Edition noch mit zwei Bonus-Songs aufwarten kann, die auf der CD nicht enthalten sind.

Imposanter Einstieg

Sodann erklingt der Opener „Hyena’s Call“ und der legt die Messlatte direkt sehr hoch. Mit der Speerspitze voran ballert der Song nach vorne weg, aber nicht stumpf und ungestüm. Es ist ein feines scharfes Schwert, das mit einer melodischen Schärfe geschwungen wird. Umgehend wird deutlich, dass sich nicht nur die Produktion weiter verbessert hat. Es sind noch einige andere Dinge, die einen großen Schritt nach vorne gemacht haben. Alles wirkt noch pompöser, die Gitarren klingen noch spielfreudiger und fetter. Darüber hinaus hat Sänger Roland seinem Gesang einige feine Schliffe mehr verpasst. „Hyenas Call“ zeigt dies sehr deutlich und macht keine Kompromisse. Der Track zeigt sich als perfekter Power Metal Kracher, der einen förmlich überwältigt.

Machtvolle Kompositionen

Wer jetzt denkt (so wie ich), dass BLACK & DAMNED nun mit den anderen Songs genauso stringent nach vorne geht, der liegt völlig daneben. Zwar hauen BLACK & DAMNED noch flotte Knaller raus, aber im Großen und Ganzen spielen die Songs im Midtempobereich. Das erste Midtempo-Biest wird sogleich mit dem zweiten Song „Rise To Rise“ losgelassen. Mit geilen Riffs und mächtigen Drums wird der Song eingeleitet. Der Song ist durch schöne Melodien geprägt und der Refrain macht es sich umgehend im Kopf gemütlich. Die Krönung ist ein kleines cooles Keybordsolo, das mich geflasht hat. Das sind atmosphärische Elemente, die den Unterschied ausmachen.

Fliegende Hymnen

„Golden Wings“ wird zwar keinen Preis für innovative Lyrics gewinnen, denn auf goldenen Schwingen sind schon so einige durch die Lüfte geflogen. Doch was soll’s, wenn der Flug einfach Spaß macht, denn der Song ist eine astreine klassische Hymne wie sie im Buche steht. Der Song zieht das Tempo wieder an und liefert einen catchigen Refrain, der nicht düster, sondern eher hoffnungsvoll und bestärkend daherkommt. Das hochmelodische Gitarrensolo ist wunderbar eingewoben und verstärkt diesen Effekt.

„Black & Damned“ lässt mal wieder die Peitsche knallen und galoppiert flott durch die Ohren. Die fetzigen Leads im Beginn, welche durch die dunklen massiven Riffs schneiden, lassen es direkt krachen. Schade, dass man diese geilen Leads nicht noch mal im Verlauf des Songs eingebaut hat. Insgesamt wird der Song aber super geschmettert und lässt es schön krachen.

Eine Monsterballade

findet sich mit „Inside“. Hier offenbart sich sehr deutlich die stimmliche Entwicklung von Sänger Roland, der hier mal andere Wege beschreitet. So eine Ballade hätte er auf dem letzten Album wohl eher nicht gesungen. Der Refrain ist einfach zum Dahinschmelzen. Dies ist ein Song der Kategorie, die man sich sofort mehrmals anhören muss, weil er so schön ist. Dies ist eine Ballade, die Potenzial hat, um Massen zu begeistern. Nicht zu schleimig, um auszurutschen, aber trotzdem wunderbar emotional, um ins Herz zu gehen und dort zu verbleiben. Fantastisch!

„King And Allies“ ist gleichfalls eine Powerballade, aber mit einem anderen Ansatz. Sie wird mit einem tollen Gitarrenspiel eingeleitet. Im Gesamtbild wirkt sie schwerer und dunkler. Auch das mutige Zwischenspiel mit dem gesprochenen Text ab Minute 02:30 h kontrastiert mit den ansonsten melodisch fließenden Melodiebögen und intensiviert diese Atmossphäre.

Mit dem Abschlusstrack „Servants Of The Devil“ hat man sich wieder für eine Midtempo-Nummer entschieden, der natürlich wiederum mächtig auftrumpft, aber hier spätestens hätte ich mir noch mal nen Song oder ne Passage gewünscht, die tempomäßig mehr abgeht. So hätte man noch mal den Kreis zum übermächtigen Opener schließen können, um dem Album einen krachenden Abschied zu verpassen.

Fazit

Insgesamt wirkt „Servants Of The Devil“ homogener als das letzte bereits tolle Album „Heavenly Creatures“, wo die Band sich hier und da noch ein wenig ausprobiert hat. Das Album macht einiges anders als der ohnehin schon potente Vorgänger. Die Atmosphäre ist außerdem etwas düsterer geworden. Dabei hat man es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht die Arrangements noch stimmiger zu gestalten und mit mehr Details zu versehen. Hierbei fällt mir z.B. das Gitarrenspiel auf, dass hier immer wieder mit kleinen, aber feinen Akzenten für das gewisse Etwas sorgt. Immer wieder schießt die Gitarre neben den rassigen Riffs mit spritzigen Leads hervor. Der Gesang hat sich ebenfalls verbessert und mich hat Sänger Roland mit seiner Leistung völlig überrascht, und zwar in sehr positivem Sinne. Die gewaltigen Refrains verwöhnen die Ohren.

BLACK & DAMNED holen tief Luft, atmen den Power Metal ganz intensiv ein und pusten mit aller Kraft das erhabene Album „Servants Of The Devil“ raus. Die Band hat einen langen Atem, so dass sich eine beachtliche Sammlung großer Metal-Hymnen auf dem Album präsentieren. Nicht nur die treibenden Songs sind von einer kraftvollen Aura umgeben. Die Band versteht sich auch hervorragend darin, mächtige Midtempo-Hymnen zu erschaffen. Alles in allem wird „Servants Of The Devil“ von Euch Besitz ergreifen und Euch nicht mehr loslassen!

Power Metal

BLACK & DAMNED gave birth to their debut album „Heavenly Creatures“ in January 2021 out of nowhere in a very short time into the Metal world. The album had not only convinced me, but was generally very well received in the media.

Now the new album „Servants Of The Devil“ will be coming to you in the near future, more precisely on 28.04.2023. Before I listen to the songs, I first noticed the awesome cover artwork that was very impressively designed. A very sublime image with many small details that is a perfect visual invitation for the musical content. Nevertheless, a recommendation for the limited vinyl edition, so you can admire the cover in large format. In addition, the vinyl edition can still come up with two bonus songs that are not included on the CD.

Imposing entry

The opener „Hyena’s Call“ directly sets the bar very high. With the spearhead ahead, the song bangs away to the front, but not blunt and impetuous. It’s a fine sharp sword wielded with a melodic edge. Immediately it becomes clear that it’s not just the production that has continued to improve. There are several other things that have taken a big step forward. Everything seems even more pompous, the guitars sound even more playful and singer Roland has given his vocals a few more fine polishes. „Hyenas Call“ shows this very clearly and makes no compromises. The track shows itself as a perfect power Metal banger that literally overwhelms you.

Powerful compositions

Who now thinks (like me) that BLACK & DAMNED now stringently goes forward with the other songs, is completely wrong. Although BLACK & DAMNED still knock out snappy bangers, but on the whole the songs play in the midtempo range. The first midtempo beast is immediately unleashed with the second song „Rise To Rise“ with awesome riffs and powerful drums. „Rise To Rise“ is characterized by beautiful melodies and the chorus immediately makes itself comfortable in the head. The crowning glory is a small cool keyboard solo that completely flashed me. These are atmospheric elements that make the difference.

Flying hymn

„Golden Wings“ won’t win any prizes for innovative lyrics, because some people have already flown on golden wings. But that doesn’t matter if the flight is just fun, because the song is an fantastic classic anthem. The song picks up the pace again and delivers a catchy chorus that doesn’t come across as gloomy, but rather hopeful and encouraging. The highly melodic guitar solo is wonderfully woven in and reinforces this effect.

„Black & Damned“ cracks the whip again and gallops briskly through the ears. The groovy leads in the beginning, which cut through the dark massive riffs, let it hit directly. Too bad that they have not built these horny leads again in the course of the song. Overall, however, the song is super smashed.

A genius ballade

is found with „Inside“. Here is very clearly revealed the vocal development of singer Roland, who treads different paths here. Such a ballad he would probably not have sung on the last album. The chorus is simply to melt away. This is a song of the category that you immediately have to listen to several times because it is so beautiful. This is a ballad that has potential to thrill crowds. Not too slimy to slip, but still wonderfully emotional to go to the heart and stay there.

„King And Allies“ is also a power ballad, but with a different approach. It is introduced with some great guitar playing. In the overall picture it seems heavier and darker. Also the bold interlude with the spoken lyrics from minute 02:30 h contrasts with the otherwise melodic flowing melodic arcs and intensifies this atmosphere.

With the closing track „Servants Of The Devil“ they have again opted for a midtempo song, which of course trumps mightily, but here at the latest I would have liked another song or a passage that goes off with more speed. So one could have closed the circle to the overpowering opener again to give the album a crashing farewell.

Fazit

Overall, „Servants Of The Devil“ seems more homogeneous than the last already great album „Heavenly Creatures“, where the band still tried a little here and there. The album does some things differently than the already potent predecessor. The atmosphere has also become a bit darker. At the same time, they have made it their task to make the arrangements even more coherent and to provide them with more details. Here I notice, for example, the guitar playing that provides here again and again with small but fine accents for that certain something. Often the guitar shoots out next to the racy riffs with tangy leads. The vocals have also improved and I was completely surprised by singer Roland’s performance, in a very positive sense. The powerful choruses spoil the ears.

BLACK & DAMNED take a deep breath, inhale the power metal quite intensively and blow out the sublime album „Servants Of The Devil“ with all their might. The band has a long breath, so that a considerable collection of great metal anthems present themselves on the album. Not only the driving songs are surrounded by a powerful aura. The band also excels at creating powerful midtempo anthems. All in all, „Servants Of The Devil“ will take possession of you and won’t let you go!

Einfach krass!

Ich hatte es bereits bei meinem Jahresrückblick erwähnt. Trotz des COVID-19 Fluchs haben sich alle in der Musikbranche den Arsch aufgerissen. Bands, Fans und alle anderen haben ihren Beitrag geleistet, um sich durch diese Krise zu kämpfen. Es konnten sogar einige Konzerte stattfinden. Aber vor allem sind die Bands und Musiker sehr kreativ geworden und haben 2021 hochkarätige Alben veröffentlicht.

Man kann sich nicht der Illusion hingeben wirklich alle Veröffentlichungen eines Jahres zu berücksichtigen, denn bei der Masse ist das schier unmöglich. Dies gilt auch für einen gestandene und fleißige Redaktion von ‚metal-heads.de‘. Vor allem ist es dann der Fall, wenn man nicht nur die bekannten Acts auf dem Schirm hat, sondern auch die Underground Acts und Newcomer der Branche. Aber es sind gerade diese, die sich qualitativ hinter den Großen der Szene nicht verstecken müssen und oft für sehr positive Erlebnisse sorgen. So beginnt meiner persönliche Reise durch das Jahr 2021 mit „METALHEADs Top List 2021 – Teil 1“.

Eine erlesene Auswahl

Ich denke, dass wir bei ‚metal-heads.de‘ eine gute Auswahl getroffen haben und eine gute Bandbreite präsentieren konnten. Glücklicherweise gibt es auch noch andere Webzines, die unseren Leidenschaft teilen. Deshalb könnt Ihr Euch von allen Bestenlisten Eure persönlichen Highlights heraussuchen. Die Erstellung so einer Liste ist nicht nur aufgrund der Vielzahl von Veröffentlichungen ein schwieriges Unterfangen, sondern auch deswegen, weil die einzelnen Stilrichtungen nicht mehr so klar voneinander zu trennen sind wie es früher einmal der Fall war.

Zudem ist mein Musikgeschmack sehr breit gefächert, so dass sich bei mir eine lange Liste von Alben im Laufe des Jahres ansammelt. So kam es dieses Jahr dazu, dass ich persönlich ca. 90 Alben rezensiert habe, von denen ich Euch die Alben noch einmal nahe lege, die mich besonders nachhaltig begeistern konnten. Dasselbe werden meine Kollegen werden sicherlich auch noch tun und ihre persönlichen Highlights präsentieren, denn der Musikgeschmack ist so vielfältig wie die Musik selbst.

Auch die Alben, die hier nicht in der Liste erscheinen, sind in der Regel sehr hörenswert, da vorab schon eine Auswahl für die Alben getroffen wird, welche hier bei ‚metal-heads.de‘ vorgestellt werden. Wie es sich für ein Album des Jahres gehört, steht es direkt an der Spitze der Liste. Also lasse ich direkt die Katze aus dem Sack und beginne mit meinem Album des Jahres.

SIGNUM DRACONIS mit „The Divine Comedy: Inferno“

Es ist ein Debütalbum von solcher Qualität im Bereich des symphonischen Power-Metal, dass es auf Anhieb mein Album des Jahres geworden ist. Warum ist das so? Weil ich SIGNUM DRACONIS (Facebook) bewundere! Der Ursprung dieses ehrgeizigen Projekts „The Divine Comedy: Inferno“ und die 11-jährige Entstehungsgeschichte sind von unglaublichen Ambitionen und einer fast unmenschlichen ehrgeizigen Ausdauer geprägt. Das Ergebnis ist atemberaubend. „The Divine Coemdy: Inferno“ ist ein wahrlich göttliches Album, was für mich in jeglicher Hinsicht bis ins kleinste Detail ausgearbeitet ist, so dass dem Hörer bei einer sagenhaften Spielzeit von 95 Minuten nicht langweilig wird. Wenn wir von Symphonic Metal sprechen, dann steht dieses Album mit jeder Faser dafür ein. Dafür sorgt nicht nur das Songwriting und die hervorragende Arbeit der Bandmitglieder, sondern auch die Zusammenarbeit mit einem kompletten Orchesterensemble (Symphonieorchester Bratislava) und fantastischen Gastmusikern wie beispielsweise Sängerin Chiara Manese, Ksenia Glonty.

SIGNUM DRACONIS haben mit „The Divine Comedy: Inferno“ ein großartiges Monument erschaffen. Sie haben der anspruchsvollen Herausforderung getrotzt und überzeugen auf ganzer Linie mit ihrer Vertonung eines Klassikers der Weltliteratur. Dies ist ein erhabenes Kunstwerk, welches für mich auf jeden Fall einen Platz in der Reihe der besten Konzeptalben gefunden hat. Ein Album voller Spannung und Drama, dass mit kreativer Vielfalt und künstlerischem Geschick durchtränkt ist. Eine intensive tiefgreifende Reise, die Euch mit einer faszinierenden Atmosphäre begeistern wird. SIGNUM DRACONIS sind feinster italienischer symphonischer Power Metal! Ein göttliches Album!

Symphonic Metal

METALWINGS

aus Ungarn möchte ich nicht unerwähnt lassen, auch wenn der Preis dieses Jahr für das Album des Jahres im Bereich Symphonic Metal anderweitig vergeben wurde. Denn METALWINGS haben dieses Jahr ebenso das fantastisches Album „A Whole New Land“ veröffentlicht. Der Symphonic-Metal von METALWINGS kommt nicht auf einer monstermäßigen niederschmetternden Bombastwelle daher. Sie gehen etwas filigraner an die Kompositionen heran. Das heißt aber nicht, dass es hier an Energie fehlen würde. Denn die ist zweifelsohne ebenfalls vorhanden, aber eben gepaart mit verdammt viel Gefühl.

Diese Verweben der klassischen symphonischen Instrumente in den Songs ist überragend. Bis hin zu einem verdammt guten Gitarrensolos ist alles da, was das Herz begehrt. Ein prägendes Merkmal ist das Violinenspiel von Sängerin Stella. Es ist ein unendlich gefühlvolles Instrument, dass gerade aber auch in Verbindung mit dem Metal-Sound eine besondere Kraft verkörpern kann. Es ist in der Lage vielfältige Emotionen zu erzeugen. (Review / Interview mit Stella)

Power Metal

BLACK & DAMNED

Gleich zu Beginn machen die deutschen Power Metaller BLACK & DAMNED (Facebook) von sich reden. Ich persönlich halte sie für eine aufstrebende deutsche Band, die mit ihrem Debütalbum „Heavenly Creatures“ auf Anhieb für eine Menge Aufsehen gesorgt haben. Mit einem sehr abwechslungsreichen Angebot ist „Heavenly Creatures“ eines der besten Power Metal Alben des Jahres 2021. Es hat zwar noch nicht für den Thron gereicht, aber es ist bemerkenswert, was für ein tolles Debütalbum die Männer in kurzer Zeit rausgehauen haben. Aus sicheren Quellen weiß ich, dass nächstes Jahr direkt das nächst Album folgen wird. Man darf mehr als gespannt sein, was uns erwarten wird. (Review / Interview)

RAGE

haben dieses Jahr schon wieder kurz nach ihrem starken letzten Album „Wings Of Rage“ (2020) das neue Album „Resurrection Day“ herausgebracht und man sollte nicht meinen, dass den Herren die Luft ausgeht. Das neue Album ist granatenstark. Das Ding hat Power und fetzt mehr als heftig durch die Ohren. Ist schon irre, was für einen kreativen hochwertigen Output RAGE (Facebook) bieten. Ähnlich wild geht es bei den Griechen

FIREFORCE

zu. Das Album „Rage Of War“ hat es mir direkt zu Beginn des Jahres ordentlich besorgt. Neuzugang Matt gefällt mir sehr gut, sowohl am Mikro als auch an der Gitarre. Mit seinen mitreißenden fetzigen Soli setzt er neue Akzente im insgesamt hochwertigen Sound von FIREFORCE (Facebook). Deshalb schießt sich der stählerne FIREFORCE-Panzer mit durchschlagenden Granaten auch in die Reihe der besten Power Metal Alben. BRAINSTORM mit „Wall Of Skulls“

BRAINSTORM (Facebook) haben für mich anno 2021 mit ihrem Album „Wall Of Skulls“ ein verdammt geiles Album, wenn nicht sogar eines der besten ihrer Karriere, produziert. Das Album hat alles, was ein Power-Metal-Album ausmacht und vom fantastischen Gesang des Frontmanns Andy gekrönt wird. Die Songs bieten eine ganze Palette von Songs, die von hochmelodisch bis angriffslustig alles bieten. Geniale Hymnen inklusive! Mein Redaktionskollege Uwe war ebenfalls von dem Album sehr angetan und war der Meinung, dass es eine perfekte Darbietung sei und man an dem Album nicht vorbeikommen könne.

Heavy Metal

WITCHBOUND

huldigen dem klassischen melodischen Heavy Metal und vermitteln das Thema in Reinkultur. Tolle Riffs und tolle Melodien. Dabei hat die Hexengilde den Pfeffersack stets in der Hinterhand und würzt damit so manchen Trank im Hexenkessel. Es sind liebevoll komponierte und interpretierte Songs, die eine Stunde lang eine lebendige wundervolle Geschichte erzählen. Dabei lassen sie eine gesunde Portion Power mit einfließen, so dass eine Vermischung von packendem Heavy Metal und knackigem Power-Metal entsteht. Es ist ein schönes vielseitiges Album geworden, mit dem WITCHBOUND (Facebook) den Spirit der alten Zeit vortrefflich einfängt und aufleben lässt. (Review)

NEKROMANT

aus Schweden haben mit dem Album „Temple Of Haal“ ein fesselndes Album erschaffen, dass Euch die Musik mit einer bemerkenswerten Atmosphäre spüren lassen. Mit seinen episch doomigen Ansätzen und den geschickt konstruierten Songs wird die Welt der alten Götter und Sagen von NEKROMANT (Facebook) wiederbelebt. Die elektrisierenden Solos und Riffs, begleitet von einem prägenden Bass und angefeuert von lebendigen Drums, verbinden sich mit dem Gesang und öffnen das Tor in eine andere Welt. DEE SNIDER

hat nun auch schon einige Jahre auf dem Buckel. Und ist er ruhiger geworden? Nein, auf keinen Fall. DEE SNIDER (Facebook) hat dieses Jahr einen richtigen Knaller rausgerotzt. Mit stolz geschwellter Brust und von ganzem Rockerherzen smasht die Band um DEE SNIDER ein beachtenswertes mit Rock und Metal getränktes Glaubensbekenntnis heraus. Das Album besteht aus endgeilen herausragenden und sehr guten Tracks. Ne Nullnummer werdet Ihr nicht finden. Das Niveau ist durchweg verdammt hoch, auch wenn nicht jeder Song das Niveau der absoluten Burnersongs erreicht. So bleibt ein Album, dass auf jeden Fall zu den Besten gehört, was ich dieses Jahr bisher in diesem Bereich gehört habe (Review hier) Doch das Album musste sich dann doch noch geschlagen geben., und zwar von

MANIMAL mit „Armageddon“

„Armageddon“ ist das Heavy Metal Album des Jahres für mich. Warum? MANIMAL (Facebook) haben mit „Armageddon“ dem klassischen Heavy Metal ein Denkmal gesetzt. Das Album hat keine Schwächen und bietet einen Knaller nach dem anderen. Ein Album muss in erster Linie unterhalten! Und das tut dieses Album unbestritten! Die Männer brennen lichterloh und geben Vollgas! Neben den schon erwähnten messerscharfen Riffs gibt es haufenweise geile Gitarrensolos. Der schwere Bass klingt immer schön durch und zusammen mit dem wuchtigen Schlagzeug treiben sie als stark schlagendes Herz den Sound immer wieder voran. Sänger Samuel Nyman ist ein absolut geiler Höllensänger, der den Sound unter Feuer setzt. (Review hier)

Hardrock

Einer der klassischsten Genres im Bereich der verzerrten Gitarren. Und es gibt noch genügend Bands, die mit zünftigem Hardrock zu unterhalten wissen. Dazu gehören unter anderem folgende Bands.

MÄDHOUSE

aus Österreich predigen den Hardrock, und das verdammt deftig. Sie haben sich jetzt 2021 der Sache wieder angenommen und haben mit „Bad Habits“ eine neue Messe geschrieben. Ganze 15 Burner, die es krachen lassen. MÄDHOUSE sind verrückt und scheissen auf Etikette! Dies drückt alleine der Albumtitel „Bad Habits“ aus. Die Texte und Songtitel sind beileibe nicht lyrisch oder sonstwie anspruchsvoll. MÄDHOUSE kommen eher mit einer Leck-Mich-Am-Arsch-Einstellung daher und wollen niemanden belehren oder sozialkritisch sein. Und wenn man ihr mal nen richtig beschissenen Tag habt, dann wird die Mucke Euch katapultmäßig auf eine Gute-Laune-Wolke schießen und ihr zeigt der Welt von oben den dicken Mittelfinger. Versprochen! Michael Schinkels ETERNAL FLAME

ist ursprünglich eine Rockband der 80’er Jahre. 2004 trennten sich zunächst die Wege, bis im Jahre 2012 Michael Schinkel und Helmut Kohlpaintner eine Wiederauferstehung starteten. ETERNAL FLAME (Facebook) schaffen mit „Gravitation“ ein Wurmloch zwischen den 80’ern und der Moderne. Das Album zieht Euch hinein und verwöhnt Euch mit tollen Rockhymnen, gefühlvollen Balladen und auch ein wenig außergewöhnlichen Songs. Ganz formidabel ist ohne Frage die Leistung des Gitarristen Michael Schinkel. Es ist eine wahre Freude seinem Gitarrenspiel zuzuhören und insbesondere die Solos sind eine Klasse für sich. SOCIAL DISORDER mit „Love 2 Be Hated“

bringen frischen Wind in den Hardrock-Sektor. SOCIAL DISORDER (Facebook) schenken Euch mit „Love 2 Be Hated“ eine wahre Perle des Hardrock. Handwerklich ohne Fehl und Tadel und mit einem Sänger, der mit einer Wahnsinnsstimme gesegnet ist, sorgt die Band für grandiose Unterhaltung. Das sind alles hochkarätig eingespielte Songs, die einen mitreißen und begeistern. Dafür sorgen neben dem flotten melodischen „Dreaming“ auch fetzige bluesige Nummer wie „Down On My Knees“ oder ne Southern-Rock geprägte Nummer wie „Raise A Glass“ oder eben auch das sehr atmosphärische dunkel angehauchte „Love 2 Be Hated“, dass mit gefühlvoller Härte zu begeistern weiß. Die geniale Stimme des begnadeten Sängers Thomas Nordin zieht den Hörer umgehend in seinen Bann. (Review)

TIMECHILD

beherrschen diese Kunst zwischen den Welten der verführerischen warmen Melodik und dem wuchtigen mitreißenden Rock hin- und herzuspringen. „And Yet It Moves“ ist somit ein sehr aufregendes Album mit einer frechen Portion Coolness und heißen Rhythmen. Die Musik rockt schwer und heavy dahin und entwickelt dabei einen betörenden Groove, dem man sich kaum entziehen kann. TIMECHILD (Facebook) haben ein echt starkes Debütalbum hingelegt. Dies zeigt eindrucksvoll, dass man von der Band noch einiges erwarten darf. Diese Band sollte man jedenfalls auf dem Schirm haben. (Review)

STEPFATHER FRED mit „Like The Sea“

Heavy Rock roh und deftig serviert! Dabei werden die Grenzen zum Metal ausgelotet. Das ist purer ehrlicher Rock mit einer rauen Durchschlagskraft. STEPFATHER FRED (Facebook) gehen auf den Rummel, hauen den Lukas und lassen mit dem Hammerschlag „Like The Sea“ den Gong nicht nur scheppern, sondern explodieren. Ausnahmesänger Basti hat eine Powerröhre, die Euch erzittern lässt. Er kann Euer Herz aber auch mit einer gefühlvollen Offensive angreifen, die keinen Widerstand zulässt. Er ist ein sehr emotionaler Sänger, dem man jedes seiner gesungenen Worte sofort abkauft, weil er einfach ehrlich klingt. Dies trifft auch auf die vorherigen Alben zu, die ebenfalls nicht von schlechten Eltern sind. Blues Rock

STEW mit „Taste“

STEW (Facebook) haben mir ein Hörerlebnis geboten, dass in seiner Art dieses Jahr für mich einzigartig war. Also zumindest ist mir kein anderes Album untergekommen, dass mir mit dieser Art Heavy Blues Rock die Ohren unter Feuer gesetzt hat. Somit sind STEW natürlich in meiner Bestenliste des Jahres 2021 vertreten. Man spürt diese Freude an der Musik in jeder Faser der Songs und diese Freude reißt Euch förmlich mit. Das Album versprüht so viel Energie und Groove, dass sogar die Toten aus den Gräbern auferstehen würden, um ihre steifen Knochen zu rocken. (Review)

METALHEADs Top List 2021 – Part 1

Simply rad!

I already mentioned it in my review of the year. Despite the COVID-19 curse, everyone in the music industry worked their asses off. Bands, fans and everyone else did their part to fight through this crisis. It was even possible to have some concerts. But most importantly, bands and musicians have become very creative and released top-notch albums in 2021.

You can’t have the illusion of really taking into account all the releases of a year, because with the mass, it’s almost impossible. This is also true for the seasoned and diligent editors of ‚metal-heads.de‘. Especially it is the case when you don’t only have the well known acts on your screen, but also the underground acts and newcomers of the music business. But it’s these that don’t have to hide behind the big names of the scene in terms of quality and they often provide very positive experiences. So my personal journey through the year 2021 starts with „METALHEAD’s Top List 2021 – Part 1“.

A nice selection

I think we made a good selection at ‚metal-heads.de‘ and were able to present a good range. Fortunately there are also other webzines that share our passion. And so you can pick your personal highlights from all the best lists. The compilation of this list is not only a difficult task because of the huge number of releases, but also because the different styles are not as clearly separated as they used to be in the past. In addition, my taste in music is very broad, so I accumulate a long list of albums over the year.

Personally, I have reviewed round about 90 albums and I will once again recommend the albums to you that I was particularly enthusiastic about. But also the albums that do not appear here in the list are usually very worth listening to, because a selection is already made in advance for the albums that are presented here at ‚metal-heads.de‘. As it should be for an album of the year, it is directly at the top of the list. So let´s start with my album of the year.

Best album of the year 2021

SIGNUM DRACONIS with „The Divine Comedy: Inferno“

It’s a debut album of such quality in the realm of Symphonic Power Metal that it instantly became my album of the year. Why is that? Because I admire SIGNUM DRACONIS(Facebook))! The origin of this ambitious project „The Divine Comedy: Inferno“ and the 11-year history of its creation are marked by incredible ambition and almost inhuman ambitious perseverance. It is breathtaking.

„The Divine Coemdy: Inferno“ is a truly divine album, which for me is elaborated in every way to the smallest detail, so that the listener does not get bored with a fabulous playing time of 95 minutes. If we speak of Symphonic Metal, then this album stands for it with every fiber. This is ensured not only by the songwriting and the excellent work of the band members, but also by the collaboration with a full orchestral ensemble (Bratislava Symphony Orchestra) and fantastic guest musicians such as vocalist Chiara Manese and Ksenia Glonty.

SIGNUM DRACONIS have created a magnificent monument with „The Divine Comedy: Inferno“. They have defied the demanding challenge and convince all along the line with their setting of a classic of world literature. This is a sublime work of art, which for me has definitely found a place in the ranks of the best concept albums. An album full of suspense and drama that is imbued with creative diversity and artistic skill. An intense profound journey that will enthrall you with a fascinating atmosphere. SIGNUM DRACONIS is the finest Italian symphonic Power Metal! A divine album!

Symphonic Metal

METALWINGS

from Hungary I would not like to leave unmentioned, even if the prize this year for the album of the year in the field of Symphonic Metal was already awarded. Because METALWINGS have also released the fantastic album „A Whole New Land“ this year. The Symphonic Metal of METALWINGS does not come along on a monstrous knockdown bombast wave. They approach the compositions a bit more filigree. But this does not mean that there is a lack of energy here. Because that is undoubtedly also present, but just paired with damn much feeling.

This interweaving of classical symphonic instruments in the songs are outstanding. Up to a damn good guitar solos everything is there what the heart desires. A defining feature is the violin playing of vocalist Stella. It is an infinitely soulful instrument that can embody a special power especially in connection with the metal sound. It is able to create a variety of emotions. (Review / Interview with Stella)

Power Metal

BLACK & DAMNED

Right at the beginning the German power metallers BLACK & DAMNED (Facebook) make themselves known. Personally, I consider them to be an up-and-coming German band that caused quite a stir right away with their debut album „Heavenly Creatures“. With a very diverse offering, „Heavenly Creatures“ is one of the best power metal albums of 2021. It wasn’t enough for the throne yet, but it’s remarkable what a great debut album these guys have knocked out in a short amount of time. I know that next year the next album will follow directly. One can be more than curious what will await us. (Review / Interview)

RAGE

have released the new album „Resurrection Day“ this year again shortly after their strong last album „Wings Of Rage“ (2020) and you should not think that the gentlemen are running out of steam. The new album is very strong. This album has power and shreds more than violently through your ears. It’s crazy what a creative high-quality output RAGE (Facebook) offer. Similarly wild it goes on with the Greeks

FIREFORCE

The album „Rage Of War“ gave me a good start right at the beginning of the year. New bandmember Matt pleases me very well, both on the mic and on the guitar. With his rousing groovy solos he sets new accents in the overall high-quality sound of FIREFORCE (Facebook) . That’s why the steel FIREFORCE-Tank with penetrating shells also shoots itself into the row of the best power metal albums of 2021. BRAINSTORM with „Wall Of Skulls“

BRAINSTORM (Facebook) have produced for me anno 2021 with their album „Wall Of Skulls“ a damn awesome album, if not one of the best of their long career. The album has everything that makes a power metal album and is topped by the fantastic vocals of frontman Andy. The songs offer a whole range of songs from highly melodic to attacking. Brilliant anthems included! My editorial colleague Uwe was also very taken with the album and was of the opinion that it was a great performance and that you can’t get past the album as a fan.

Heavy Metal

WITCHBOUND

pay homage to classic melodic Heavy Metal with great guitar riffs and superb melodies. The witch’s guild always has the pepper sack up their sleeve and spice up the potion in the witch’s cauldron with it. These are lovingly composed and interpreted songs that tell a lively wonderful story for an hour. So they let a healthy portion of power flow in that a mixture of gripping Heavy Metal and crisp Power Metal is created. It has become a beautiful versatile album, with which WITCHBOUND (Facebook) excellently captures the spirit of the old days and brings it to life. (Review)

NEKROMANT

from Sweden have created with the album „Temple Of Haal“ a captivating journey that will make you feel the music with a remarkable atmosphere. With its epic doomy approaches and cleverly constructed songs, the world of the old gods and sagas of NEKROMANT (Facebook) is revived. The electrifying solos and riffs, accompanied by a formative bass and fueled by lively drums, combine with the vocals to open the gateway to another world. DEE SNIDER

has a few years under its belt. And has he become calmer? No, by no means. DEE SNIDER (Facebook) ignited a real banger this year with „Leave A Scar“. With proudly swollen chest and from a truely rocker heart the band around DEE SNIDER smashes out a remarkable with Rock and Metal soaked creed. The album consists of outstanding and very good tracks. You won’t find any rivets. The level is consistently high, even if not every song reaches the level of the absolute top area. So remains an album that is definitely one of the best that I have heard this year so far in this area (Review here) But this album was exceeded by

MANIMAL with „Armageddon“

„Armageddon“ is the best Heavy Metal album of the year for me. Why? MANIMAL (Facebook) have set a monument to classic Heavy Metal with „Armageddon“. „Armageddon“ has no weaknesses and offers one killer after another. An album must first and foremost entertain! And this album does that undisputedly! The men are on fire and give full throttle! Besides the razor-sharp riffs, there are heaps of awesome guitar solos. The ultra heavy bass always sounds through nicely and together with the massive drums they drive the sound as a strong beating heart again and again. Singer Samuel Nyman is an absolutely awesome hellish singer who sets the sound under fire. (Review)

Hardrock

One of the most classic genres in the field of distorted guitars. And there are still enough bands that know how to entertain with hearty Hardrock. These include, among others, the following bands.

MÄDHOUSE

from Austria preach Hardrock, and damn solidly at that. They have now taken up the cause again in 2021 and have written a new mass with „Bad Habits“. A whole 15 burners that let it rip. MÄDHOUSE are crazy and shit on etiquette! This expresses alone the album title „Bad Habits“. The lyrics and song titles are by no means lyrical or otherwise sophisticated. MÄDHOUSE rather come along with a lick-my-ass attitude and don’t want to teach anyone or be socially critical. And if you have a really shitty day, the music will shoot you catapult-like on a cloud of good mood and you show the world from above the big middle finger. That’s a promise! (Review)

Michael Schinkels ETERNAL FLAME

is originally a Rockband of the 80’s. In 2004 they parted ways, until in 2012 Michael Schinkel and Helmut Kohlpaintner started a resurrection. ETERNAL FLAME (Facebook) create with „Gravitation“ a wormhole between the 80’s and the modern age. The album pulls you in and spoils you with great Rock anthems, soulful ballads and also a little extraordinary songs. Quite formidable is without question the performance of guitarist Michael Schinkel. It is a real pleasure to listen to his guitar playing and especially the solos are in a class of their own.(Review)

SOCIAL DISORDER with „Love 2 Be Hated“

bring fresh wind into the Hardrock sector. SOCIAL DISORDER (Facebook) present you with „Love 2 Be Hated“ a true pearl of Hardrock. Craftsmanship without fault and with singer Thomas Nordin who is blessed with an insane voice, the band provides terrific entertainment. These are all top-class songs that carry you away and inspire you. This is ensured in addition to the snappy melodic „Dreaming“ also groovy bluesy number like „Down On My Knees“ or a Southern Rock influenced song like „Raise A Glass“ or even the very atmospheric dark „Love 2 Be Hated“ that knows how to inspire with soulful hardness. The ingenious voice of the gifted singer Thomas Nordin immediately captivates the listener. (Review)

Heavy Rock

TIMECHILD

master the art of jumping back and forth between the worlds of seductive warm melodicism and massive rousing Rock on their album „And Yet It Moves“. This is a very exciting album with a cheeky dose of coolness and hot rhythms. The music rocks along heavy, developing a beguiling groove that is hard to resist. TIMECHILD (Facebook) have created a really strong debut album. This shows impressively that you can still expect a lot from the band. In any case, this band should be on your radar.(Review)

STEPFATHER FRED with „Like The Sea“

Heavy Rock, served raw and hearty! Thereby the borders to metal are explored. STEPFATHER FRED (Facebook) go into the ring and hit you with a big punch that knocks you to the boards. But you can’t stay down… so get up and fight on! Exceptional singer Basti has a power tube that will make you tremble. But he can also attack your heart with a soulful offense that doesn’t allow any resistance. He is a very emotional singer, who you immediately believe every word he sings, because he just sounds honest. (Review)

Blues Rock

STEW with „Taste“

STEW (Facebook) have offered me a listening experience that was unique in its kind for me this year. So at least I have not come across any other album that has set my ears under fire with this kind of Heavy Blues Rock. Thus STEW are naturally represented in my best list of the year 2021. You can feel this joy in the music in every fiber of the songs and this joy literally pulls you along. The album sprays so much energy and groove that even the dead would rise from the graves to rock their stiff bones. (Review)

That was it with the first part of my highlights of the year 2021! In the next few days, more will follow and it will go in the harder direction.

BLACK & DAMNED (Facebook , Homepage ) haben mit ihrem Debütalbum „Heavenly Creatures“ (Review ) ein sensationelles Erstlingswerk erschaffen; und das in Rekordzeit. Würde man die Umstände nicht kennen, dann hätte man die Vorstellung, dass hier eine langjährig bestehende Band musiziert. Aber dem ist nicht so! Innerhalb weniger Monate hat man BLACK & DAMNED gegründet und das Album geschrieben, eingespielt und produziert. Alles wirkt hochprofessionell. Das fängt schon beim Cover an, geht über die gut gemachten Videos und super gemachten T-Shirts, bis hin zu dem Wichtigsten von allem, nämlich hervorragenden Songs. Viele Gründe, um sich der Ausnahmeband näher zu widmen und mit einigen Fragen zu löchern, denn BLACK & DAMNED sind quasi auferstanden aus dem Ground Zero des Lockdowns.

Das Interview ist etwas länger geworden, aber Ihr solltet Euch wirklich die Zeit nehmen, denn es erwarten Euch tonnenweise interessante Facts von dem Mann, der den Grundstein für BLACK & DAMNED gelegt hat, nämlich Michael Vetter himself. Im übrigen hat Michael auch die Fragen in Rekordzeit von nicht mal 24 Stunden beantwortet. Dafür gebührt ihm mein vollster Respekt.

Entstehung der Band

MH: Wie kommt man überhaupt auf die Idee, ein solches Projekt anzugehen? Und das ausgerechnet in der Corona-Phase!

MV: Eben genau diese „Phase“ war der Anlass für das Projekt. Obwohl das auch nicht ganz korrekt ist! Denn eigentlich gab es die Idee zu BLACK & DAMNED überhaupt nicht. Ich war damit beschäftigt meine Karriere als Hypnose-Coach in Fahrt zu bringen als mich der erste Lockdown voll erwischte. Da saß ich nun zuhause rum und überlegte was ich nun mit der Überzeit anfangen soll. Ich griff zur Klampfe und bügelte mir in meinem Studio eine Songidee zurecht. Dabei kam mir dann der Gedanke, dass es doch sicher zig Mucker gäbe denen es jetzt wie mir geht.

Also postete ich auf Facebook diesen Song und rief dazu auf, dass alle Sänger die Bock haben darauf etwas singen sollen. Ich nannte dies dann „Metal Against Boredom“. Erstaunlich viele Rückmeldungen gab es darauf hin. Jedoch ein Mann war anders! Nämlich der Bobbes! Der laberte mich nicht voll sondern lieferte am nächsten Tag den Song ab! Wir haben dann telefoniert, und da die anderen Mucker nicht richtig in die Puschen kamen, beschlossen wir beide zusammen ein paar weitere Songs so zu machen.

Arsch auf Eimer

MV: Nach dem zweiten Song war eines klar: Bobbes und ich passten wie Arsch auf Eimer! Und weil die zwei Songs so schnell gingen, stellten wir uns einer Challenge. Wir wollten binnen 14 Tage jeden Tag einen Song machen! Ich setzte mich früh morgens mit meiner geliebten Blondine ins Studio und schrieb einen Song, den ich dann direkt aufnahm. Bobbes bekam dann diesen Song Abends zugeschickt und hatte einen Tag Zeit sich den Gesang zurechtzubasteln!

Und das verrückte daran ist, dass wir nach diesen 14 Tagen unsere 12 Songs fertig hatten! Fertig! Daran wurde nichts mehr verändert! Und als wir die Songs fertig hatten, stand da plötzlich die Frage im Raum, was wir nun machen! Da der Scheiß echt gut war, entschlossen wir uns, dass wir dem Ding einen Namen geben, ein Gesicht verpassen und es korrekt recorden werden! So entstand aus einem kleinen Streichholz ein Flächenbrand! Unaufhaltsam läuft seither BLACK & DAMNED voran!

MH: Gab es vorher schon mal Kontakt zwischen Bobbes und Dir?

MH: Wir kannten uns schon ein wenig. Als ich bei PUMP war hatten wir unseren Proberaum „Wand-An-Wand“ mit IHRESGLEICHEN. Das war hartes Training für die Ohren! Zwei Bands im direkten Duell: Wer kann lauter?! Dort liefen wir uns gelegentlich über den Weg. Auf einem Festival spielten diese zwei Bands sogar einmal hintereinander. Mehr Kontakt gab es jedoch nicht. Von daher ist es krass wie wir beiden geschmeidig miteinander können!

Wut und Frust?

MH: Eure Band ist aus der CORONA Krise entstanden. Wieviel Wut und Frust steckt in den Songs?

MV: Frust gab es überhaupt nicht! Dieses Gefühl ist mir fremd. Frust bedeutet ja, dass es für dich keine erkennbare Perspektive gibt. Ich glaube aber an das Resonanz-Gesetz. Das, was ich in meinem Geist verursache, wird sich auch einstellen! Denke ich, dass etwas nicht hinhaut, dann werde ich Recht behalten! Weiß ich aber, dass es klappen wird, dann wird es klappen! Und bei BLACK & DAMNED und den Songs wusste ich sofort wo der Weg hingeht! Da ich nicht politisch werden möchte werde ich auf meine Wut nur ganz knapp eingehen. Wut verspüre ich bezüglich der Dummheit der Menschheit. Wie die Menschen mit sich, ihrem Körper, ihrem Leben und ihre mentalen Fähigkeiten umgehen. MH: Ist dadurch die dunkle Seite bei BLACK & DAMNED entstanden?

MV: Nein, diese dunkle Seite von BLACK & DAMNED hat andere Hintergründe. Ich persönlich fand die dunkle Seite immer irgendwie „sexy“! Aufgewachsen bin ich ja in Zeiten, in denen Hair-Metal und Glam ganz gross waren. Mit dieser Mucke konnte ich jedoch nie etwas anfangen. Mich zog es schon als Teeny zu „Venom“, „Black Sabbath“, „Testament“ und so Zeugs hin. Ich schaute lieber Horror-Streifen als Liebesfilme. Und seit ich mich selbst bekleiden darf , trage ich schwarze Klamotten. Wer die ersten Songs meines Schaffens kennt, der weiß, dass ich schon je her eher schwerfälliges Zeugs produzierte habe. Bei Bobbes ist ja der Background ähnlich. Er beschäftigt sich schon ewig mit schwierigen Themen. Somit war es nahezu unumgänglich, dass wir so klingen wie wir klingen!

Ein Album in Rekordzeit

MH: Ihr habt alles höchstprofessionell aufgezogen (Produktion, Fotos, Cover, Merch…). So etwas schafft man doch nicht ohne Hilfe, oder?

MV: Nun, Hilfe gab es im Prinzip nur von unseren Eheweibern. Die haben uns den Rücken freigehalten und gestärkt. Uns hätte erstmal auch niemand helfen können. Denn das Tempo, das Bobbes und ich gefahren sind, hätte jeden anderen überrollt! Die Produktion haben wir komplett alleine vorbereitet. So hat Achim Köhler am Ende „nur“ noch Mix und Mastering machen müssen. Natürlich ist dies wiederum eine Art Hilfe. Denn letztendlich bekommt man solch einen Sound ohne einen Profi nicht hin. Aber er hat uns ja nicht als Samariter „geholfen“! Ist ja sein Job! Den Rest haben wir alles selbst gewuppt! Von den Fotos über die Videos und Cover alles made by BLACK & DAMNED!!! 

Hinter einem starken Mann steht meist eine starke Frau

MH: Wer zeichnet sich z.B. verantwortlich für die Covergestaltung oder das Motiv für die Shirts?  Beides sind optische Highlights. Welche Frau hat Model gestanden? Wem gehört das Outfit? Bringt der schwarze Lack & Leder-Engel Erlösung oder Verdammnis? Für halbe Sachen scheint sie jedenfalls nicht zuständig zu sein.

MV: In meinem früheren Leben war ich Fotograf und Grafiker. Ich habe schon mehrere CD-Cover für bekanntere Bands gemacht. So war klar, dass ich auch unser Cover machen werde. Das ging dann soweit, dass ich für jede Seite in dem Digipack eine eigene Grafik gemacht habe. Ich wollte, dass die Fans etwas „Mehrwert“ bekommen. Daher lohnt sich der Kauf der CD eher als der Stream!

Die Figur auf dem Cover ist der Bezug auf den Songtitel „The Wardress“! Diese Wächterin ist nicht leicht zu durchschauen. Sie kann dich beschützen oder auch bestrafen! Das liegt in deinem Zutun. Und du weisst nicht was dir passieren wird, bis sie dann zuschlägt! Und für halbe Sachen steht sie sicher nicht! Das weiss ich höchstpersönlich, denn das Model ist meine Frau Natalie! Das Outfit hierfür haben wir selbst „gemacht“ und im Video zu „Salvation“ noch einmal aufblitzen lassen!

Das Shirtmotiv geht auf die Kappe von Bobbes. Er kennt da diesen Künstler, der solche Grafiken erstellt. Da gab es dann ein paar Mails hin und her, und das Ergebnis ist denn nun dieses Shirt! Das kann man übrigens ab jetzt auf unserer Homepage erwerben. Gibt es auch als hochwertige Zipper! Geiler Scheiss!

MH: Und wer hat für das T-Shirt-Motiv Model gestanden?

MV: Natürlich unser Platten-Boss!!!

Das Label: Rock Of Angel Records

MH: Wann ist das Label ROCK OF ANGEL RECORDS in die Sache eingestiegen? Wie kam der Kontakt zustande?

MV: Da muss ich ein wenig um den heißen Brei herumreden! Denn exakte Namen und Vorgänge müssen intern bleiben. Umschrieben war es so, dass ich einen „Bekannten“ fragte, bei welchem Label er denn unsere Band sehen würde. Er gab mir zwei Tipps. Der erste Kontakt rief mich auch direkt zurück und wollte das Material hören. Bevor er es gehört hatte, bekam ich eine Mail mit „üblichen“ Konditionen, wie man derzeit Bands unter Vertrag nimmt. Das sind dann sogenannte „Vertriebs-Deals“. Du als Band bezahlst praktisch ALLES! Und das Label wirft die CD auf den Markt und überlässt dich dann deinem Schicksal. Dann horchte der gute Mann unsere CD an und bot mir plötzlich einen anderen, neuen Deal an! Das Interesse war groß! Jedoch hatte ich ja zwei Tipps!

Bei Kontakt zwei fiel mir auf, dass dieses griechische Label hier in Germany einen Mann sitzen hat. Das machte den Kontakt etwas geschmeidiger. Ablauf: Ich schrieb ihm kurz eine WhatsApp ob die Interesse an ner neuen Band hätten. Ich bekam 10 Minuten später Antwort. Er sagte mir, dass ich ihm doch kurz das Material schicken soll. Also schob ich ihm die Mp3 der CD per Mail rüber. Unsere CD hat 60 Minuten Spielzeit. Exakt nach 80 Minuten kam die Rückmeldung mit dem Angebot für einen Deal! So etwas habe ich in meiner Karriere noch nicht erlebt. Normal war der Kampf um einen Plattenvertrag hart und schwer und oft ohne Ertrag. Mit der Scheibe von BLACK & DAMNED hatten wir im Prinzip innerhalb von 1 Tag einen Deal in der Hand! Und die Zusammenarbeit mit Rock Of Angel Records ist sensationell!!!

MH: Wie hat Euch Rock Of Angel Records unterstützt?

MV: Das Label macht für uns ALLES! Also die ganzen Business-Sachen, die du als Band nicht wirklich kannst! Die komplette Promotion, Platzierung der Videos, Spotify, Magazine, CD-Pressung und Vertrieb. Selbst Kontakte für eine Tour wurden schon über das Label geknüpft. Sie haben sogar uns dabei beraten welche Songs wir als Video und Single auskoppeln sollen. Denn natürlich haben die unglaubliche Erfahrung damit wie Fans reagieren. Ich weiß, dass solche Aussagen oft kommen, aber wir sind bei ROAR echt wie eine kleine Familie. Hier werden direkte Worte gesprochen und jeder ist für den anderen da!

Entstehung und Bedeutung der Songs

MH: Wer zeichnet sich für das Songwriting verantwortlich? Lagen die Songs teilweise schon in der Schublade und warteten nur auf den richtigen Augenblick?

MV: Nö, es gab keinerlei Schubladen-Material. Es lief so ab, dass ich morgens aufgestanden bin und mit einem Käffchen bewaffnet ins Studio ging. Dort horchte ich in mich hinein. Und das, was ich in mir fand, prügelte ich dann in die Recording-Spuren! Also jeder Song entstand ohne ein Kalkül oder Plan. Ich wusste bis zu den ersten Tönen, die ich spielte, nicht, was am Abend dann dabei rum kam! Und so kam es auch mal vor, dass sich während des Tages der Song veränderte.

Mögt Ihr ein Beispiel?! Der Song „Decide On Your Destiny“ ist ja eher eine Ballade, sag ich mal. Als ich diesen Song morgens begann, war ich auf Krawall gebürstet. Ich programmierte ein paar Drum-Beats, die sehr heftig waren und spielte ein paar Töne mit der Gitarre. Nach 1-2 Stunden spürte ich aber plötzlich andere Vibes in diesem Song. Und somit veränderte sich der Song vom Prügler zum Streichler!

MH: Mit welchem Song hat es angefangen und warum? Welcher Song hat das Album als letztes komplettiert?

MV: Der erste Song war „Salvation“. Warum? Na weil er halt der erste war!!! Da es ja kein Konzept oder Plan gab, war es halt die erste Idee, die aus meiner Gitarre kam. Die letzte Nummer die wir schrieben war dann „The 13th Sign“. Möglicherweise wären noch weitere Songs dazu gekommen. Aber als wir merkten, dass wir bei 12 Songs schon eine Stunde Spielzeit hatten beschlossen wir keine weiteren Songs mehr zu schreiben.

MH: Wie wurde das Album aufgenommen? Wer hat die Instrumente eingespielt, wenn man anfangs nur zu zweit war?

MV: Wir haben beide zuhause ein Studio. Gitarren und Bass habe ich dann bei mir aufgenommen und zu Bobbes weiter geschickt. Die Drums habe ich zuerst programmiert. Wir wollten aber auf der CD keine programmierten Drums. Deshalb hat Axel die Drums bei sich im Studio eingespielt. Das sind also „echte“ Drums! Bei ein paar Songs habe ich ein paar Keys eingespielt. Wir wollten aber, dass das wirklich gute Keys werden und haben dann den Mackenrott (Masterplan) gefragt ob er uns das einspielt. Hat er! Und dann wurde das Ganze dann bei Bobbes vorbereitet damit der Köhler es dann „Dick macht“!

Sommer, Sonne, Happiness! Oder doch nicht?

MH: Welcher Song hatte die ungewöhnlichste Entstehungsgeschichte? (Ich hörte da was von Sommer, Sonne, Balkon, Frau und eine Nachricht von Bobbes!)

MV: Was Du so alles hörst?!?! Ja, Bobbes schickte mir eine WhatsApp auf der er eine Zeile mit Melodie gesungen hat. Das waren die Worte „Heavenly Creatures Heavenly Lies“. Er fragte, ob ich daraus einen Song machen könne. Das war eine sehr „liebliche“ Melodie. Ich saß auf dem Balkon mit meiner Frau bei herrlichem Sonnenschein und Käffchen. Meine Frau war sofort von der Melodie begeistert und trällerte die dauernd vor sich her. Das war mir dann doch zu viel „Nice“!!! Ich ging ins Studio und sagte mir innerlich: „Euch geb ich „Happiness“ und „Sonnenschein“!!! Und ich versuchte den schwermütigsten und düstersten Song daraus zu machen!!! Ist mir dann auch gelungen! Übrigens einer meiner stärksten Songs die ich je geschrieben habe!

MH: „Born Again“ ist für mich einer der besten Songs auf dem Album mit einem sehr kraftvollen hammermäßigen Refrain. Der Song handelt von einer zweiten Chance, einer Wiedergeburt sozusagen. Was hat es damit auf sich?

MV: Du hast es thematisch exakt getroffen! Du solltest nie aufgeben oder etwas hinschmeissen. Denn irgendwann wendet sich das Blatt zum Guten! Du musst es nur wollen und dann bemerken, wenn es an der Zeit ist! Dann greif zu und weiter gehts!

Ungewöhnliche Klänge

MH: „The Wardress“ beginnt und endet mit ungewöhnlichen Klängen? Wie ist diese Idee entstanden und welches Zupfinstrument erzeugt diese Klänge?

MV: Das ist eine indische Sitar (Wikipedia ). Beim „Rumspielen“ fand ich den Sound und die Melodie so geil. Und habe darauf hin versucht den passenden Song dazu zu schreiben. So versuchte ich die Vibes der Sitar-Melodie aufzugreifen und damit entstand dann eben „The Wardress“!

MH: Kannst Du mir Deinen Lieblingstrack auf dem Album nennen? Jeder hat da so seine ganz persönlichen Lieblinge, auch wenn man natürlich sein gesamtes Album liebt. Oder?

MV: Natürlich liebe ich das komplette Album. Den Song den ich mir am liebsten anhöre ist „ A Whisper In The Dark“. Auf „War Is Just Another Word For Hell“ bin ich am stolzesten. Da ist mir rein musikalisch ein Meisterwerk gelungen. Ein Song mit brutalen Emotionen und Tiefgang.

BLACK & DAMNED, auferstanden aus Ruinen des kulturellen Lebens!

MH: Insgesamt ist die Thematik des Albums düster ausgefallen. Zurzeit sieht es auf der Welt in der Tat nicht gerade rosig aus. Unruhen, Kriege und Umweltzerstörung sind ein fester Bestandteil der menschlichen Existenz geworden. COVID 19 setzt dem ganzen Chaos noch die Krone auf.

Bietet die Welt keinen Platz mehr für Frohsinn und Heiterkeit?

MV: Schau Dir bitte das Video zu „Born Again“ an! Im Mittelteil siehst Du, dass wir nun Blödsinn im Kopf haben! Ich kenne keine Band, bei der so viel gelacht wird wie bei uns! Wir sind absolut positiv! Alles wird sich für uns zum Guten bewegen! Und mit Spass ist das Leben doch viel schöner und gesünder! Das Leben bzw das Universum hat aber immer zwei Seiten. Yin und Yang eben. Wo Licht ist fällt halt auch Schatten! Wir machen Euch auf die Schatten aufmerksam und zeigen Euch dann, wo Ihr Licht her bekommt!!!

MH: Wie geht man mit dem ganzen Frust, der Wut und der Hilflosigkeit angesichts des ganzen Chaos um?

MV: Wie gesagt, wir haben keinen Frust. Und hilflos fühlen wir uns auch nicht. Die Situation ist anders als gewohnt, okay…Du musst Dich aber an Gegebenheiten orientieren und dann neu wählen und handeln. Jede Situation hat seine Vorteile. Du musst eben neue Strategien wählen.

MH: Ist BLACK & DAMNED ein Mittel für die Gegenwartsbewältigung, sozusagen ein Fels in der Brandung? (Für mich persönlich war und ist Musik schon immer ein Wundermittel in allen Lebenslagen gewesen! Sie trägt noch etwas Magisches in diese Welt.)

MV: Musik ist magisch! Da hast Du Recht! Für uns ist Musik machen eine unumgängliche Aufgabe! Musik ist in uns drin. Und wir müssen sie nach Außen bringen! Sonst würden wir platzen! Du wirst mich nie erleben ohne das nebenbei Mucke läuft. Das kann ich überhaupt nicht in Worte ausdrücken. Ich freue mich gerade wie Hulle, dass wir auf unheimliche viele Menschen stoßen die unsere Musik lieben und die CDs kaufen weil sie diese Mucke glücklich macht und erfüllt! Das erfüllt dann wiederum uns!

Verstärkung

MH: Wie und wann haben sich die anderen Mitstreiter (Drummer Axel Winkler, Gitarrist Aki Reissmann, Bassist Ali Gözübüyük) bei der Band eingefunden? Hattet Ihr bestimmte Leute im Kopf oder wie muss man sich das vorstellen?

MV: Als wir bemerkten, dass wir eine CD aus dem Ganzen machen werden, gab es sofort auch den Wunsch dies live mit Band zu präsentieren. Somit musste eine Kapelle her! Und da war sofort klar, wer die Besetzung ist! Ali ist der lustigste und coolste Basser der Welt. Axel trommelt schon so lange auf professionellem Niveau, und Aki ist seit 13 Jahren mein Weggefährte im Business und mein bester Kumpel. Und alle drei waren sofort und ohne Zwang dabei!

MH: Wird Axel Mackenrott Euch auch zukünftig mit seinem Keyboard unterstützen?

MV: Das kann ich dir augenblicklich nicht exakt beantworten. Live ist ja so ne Sache. Sollte Axel mit Masterplan unterwegs sein kann er ja nicht bei uns spielen. Daher planen wir erstmal, dass die Keys live vom Band kommen müssen. Einen anderen Keyboarder wollen wir uns nicht suchen. Ich kenne keinen besseren als Axel. Und wer möchte schon die zweite Wahl nehmen?!?!

MH: Ich vermisse auch den Kerl mit der geilen Gesichtsbehaarung ganz rechts. Wo ist der denn geblieben? Jetzt mal ernsthaft… Warum hast Du den Bart abrasiert? Ich fand den Bart cool.

MV: Mein Bart ist ab! Ich hatte bis zum Lockdown nie Bart getragen. Während der Produktion war rasieren überflüssig. Dann stand da plötzlich diese Hecke in meinem Gesicht. Ja, sah cool aus. Ne Type irgendwie. Jetzt an Sylvester war der Bart ja noch deutlich länger als auf den Fotos. Immer war der im Weg. Beim Jacke zu machen klemmte der im Reissverschluss, beim Essen war er im Mund und ohne zu bürsten sah der aus wie Sau! Also stand ich Sylvester morgens auf, ging Pippi machen und sah mich im Spiegel. Und ALLES in mir rief: „Mach das Gesicht frei“!!!

Zukunftsvisionen

Es begann als Zwei-Mann-Projekt! Nun seid Ihr eine komplette Band, habt ein super Album am Start. Das Ding ist mächtig ins Rollen gekommen und es wird wohl keine Eintagsfliege bleiben.

MH: Wie sieht die Zukunft um BLACK & DAMNED aus?

MV: Unsere Zukunft sieht Hammer aus! Wir sind auf dem Weg zur Sonne direkt vorbei an den Sternen!!! Wir werden das Feld aufrollen, dass Euch schwindlig wird! In uns steckt so viel Energie und Kreativität, dass es kein Zurück mehr gibt! Wir bekommen viele positive Feedbacks, die uns jetzt bestätigen, dass wir alles richtig gemacht haben! Und deshalb gibt es nur ein Gas: VOLLGAS!!!

MH: Ich habe erfahren, dass Ihr bereits an neuen Songs schreibt. In welche Richtung wird sich der Sound von BLACK & DAMNED entwickeln?

MV: Richtig! Es sind derzeit etwa 6 Demos im Kasten. Wir haben nicht vor etwas in eine bestimmte Richtung zu bewegen. Daher wird die zweite Scheibe mal wieder unkalkulierbar! Aber wir hatten damals nichts geplant und jetzt dann auch nicht. Deshalb wird sich stilistisch nichts ändern. Wir sind wie wir sind und deshalb klingen wir wie wir klingen!

MH: Werden sich die neuen Mitstreiter am Songwriting beteiligen und dem Sound noch mehr Facetten verpassen?

MV: Aki wird sich dieses Mal auch am Songwriting beteiligen. Er ist ja ein sehr erfahrener Gitarrist. Dieses Potential nicht anzuzapfen wäre ja bescheuert. Wir sitzen dann zu zweit dran um die Gitarren auszuarbeiten. Natürlich wird sich dadurch der Horizont erweitern.

MH: Das aktuelle Album ist in Rekordzeit entstanden. Wieviel Zeit wollt Ihr Euch für das nächste Album nehmen?

MV: Diese Rekordzeit war ja erstmal so n Spass. Ob wir es schaffen innerhalb der Frist ne Platte zu schreiben. Das war schon cool. Aber nötig ist sowas ja nicht wirklich! Wir werden uns jetzt nicht zeitlich einschränken. Es läuft wie es läuft.  Bei mir ist es jedoch schon ein wenig so, dass wenn ich mal in einem „Flow“ bin ich mehrere Songs innerhalb von ein paar Tagen „gebäre“! Und sobald wir alles beisammen haben gehen wir das Ding produzieren. Gefangene machen wir keine mehr!!! Daher ohne festen Plan: Songs werden Ende Sommer eingetütet sein!

BLACK & DAMNED (Facebook , Homepage ) have created with their debut album „Heavenly Creatures“ (Review ) a sensational debut work; and that in record time. If you didn’t know the circumstances, you would have the idea that here is a long-standing band making music. But this is not the case! Within a few months BLACK & DAMNED was formed and the album was written, recorded and produced. Everything seems highly professional. This already starts with the cover, goes over the well made videos and super made t-shirts, up to the most important of all, namely excellent songs. Many reasons to take a closer look at this exceptional band and to ask them some questions, because BLACK & DAMNED have risen from the ground zero of the lockdown.

The interview has become a bit longer, but you should really take your time, because you can expect tons of interesting facts from the man who laid the foundation for BLACK & DAMNED, namely Michael Vetter himself. By the way, Michael also answered the questions in record time of not even 24 hours. For that he deserves my fullest respect.

Origin of the band

MH: How do you even come up with the idea of tackling a project like this? And this during the Corona pandemic phase!

MV: Exactly this „phase“ was the cause for the project. Although that is also not quite correct! Because actually the idea for BLACK & DAMNED didn’t exist at all. I was busy getting my career as a hypnosis coach going when the first lockdown hit me. So I sat at home and thought about what to do with all the time. I picked up my guitar and worked on a song idea in my studio. Then the thought came to me that there would be surely musicians whom it is now like me.

So I posted this song on Facebook and called for all singers who are up for it to sing something. I then called this „Metal Against Boredom“. Surprisingly, there was a lot of feedback. But one man was different! Namely the Bobbes! He didn’t talk so much and delivered the song the next day! We talked on the phone, and since the other guys didn’t really get going, we decided to do a few more songs together.

Fits like a glove

MV: After the second song, one thing was clear: Bobbes and I fit like a glove! And because the two songs went so fast, we set ourselves a challenge. We wanted to make a song every day within 14 days! I sat down early in the morning with my beloved blonde in the studio and wrote a song, which I then recorded directly. Bobbes was then sent this song in the evening and had a day to tinker with the vocals!

And the crazy thing is that after these 14 days we had finished our 12 songs! Finished! Nothing was changed anymore! And when we finished the songs, there was suddenly the question, what are we going to do now! Since the shit was really good, we decided that we will give the thing a name, give it a face and record it correctly! That’s how a small match turned into a wildfire! Unstoppable since then BLACK & DAMNED runs ahead!

MH: Was there any previous contact between Bobbes and you?

MH: We already knew each other a little bit. When I was with PUMP we had our rehearsal room „wall-to-wall“ with IHRESGLEICHEN. That was hard training for the ears! Two bands in a direct duel: Who can be louder?! There we occasionally ran into each other. On a festival these two bands even played once one after the other. But there was no more contact. From there it is unbelievable how we both can smoothly with each other!

Anger and frustration?

MH: Your band was born out of the CORONA crisis. How much anger and frustration is in the songs?

MV: There was no frustration at all! This feeling is foreign to me. Frustration means that there is no recognizable perspective for you. But I believe in the resonance principle. That, what I cause in my spirit, will also occur! If I think that something does not work out, then it will become this way! But if I know that it will work, then it will work! And with BLACK & DAMNED and the songs I knew immediately where the way goes! Since I don’t want to become political I will only briefly go into my rage. I feel anger concerning the stupidity of mankind. How people deal with themselves, their bodies, their lives and their mental abilities. MH: Is that how the dark side of BLACK & DAMNED came about?

MV: No, this dark side of BLACK & DAMNED has other backgrounds. I personally always found the dark side somehow „sexy“! I grew up in times when hair metal and glam were big. However, I could never handle anything with this music. I was drawn to „Venom“, „Black Sabbath“, „Testament“ and stuff like that already as a teenager. I preferred to watch horror movies rather than love movies. And since I’m allowed to dress myself, I wear black clothes. If you know the first songs of my work, you know that I have always succeeded in producing rather heavy stuff. Bobbes has a similar background. He has been dealing with difficult topics for ages. So it was almost inevitable that we sound the way we sound!

An album in record time

MH: You did everything in a highly professional way (production, photos, cover, merch…). You can’t succeed in something like that without help, can you?

MV: Well, in principle there was only help from our wives. They had our backs and strengthened us. At first, no one could have helped us. Because the speed that Bobbes and I drove would have overrun anyone else! We prepared the production completely on our own. So in the end Achim Köhler „only“ had to do the mixing and mastering. Of course, this is again a kind of help. Because in the end you can’t get such a sound without a professional. But he didn’t „help“ us as a Samaritan! It’s his job! The rest we have managed everything ourselves! From the photos to the videos and covers everything made by BLACK & DAMNED!!!

Behind a strong man there is usually a strong woman

MH: Who is responsible for the cover design or the motif for the shirts, for example? Both are visual highlights. Which woman was the model? Who owns the outfit? Does the black lacquer & leather angel bring salvation or damnation? In any case, she doesn’t seem to be responsible for half-measures.

MV: In my former life I was a photographer and graphic designer. I have already made several CD covers for more famous bands. So it was clear that I would also do our cover. This went so far that I made a separate graphic for each page in the digipack. I wanted the fans to get some „added value“. Therefore, the purchase of the CD is more worthwhile than the stream!

The figure on the cover is the reference to the song title „The Wardress“! This guardian is not easy to see through. She can protect you or punish you! That is up to you. And you don’t know what will happen to you until she strikes! And for half things she stands certainly not! I know that personally, because the model is my wife Natalie! The outfit for this we have „made“ ourselves and in the video to „Salvation“ once again flash!

The shirt motif is the thing of Bobbes. He knows this artist who creates such graphics. There were then a few mails back and forth, and the result is now this shirt! By the way, you can buy it now on our homepage. It is also available as a high quality zipper! Cool shit!

MH: And who modeled for the T-shirt motif?

MV: Of course our record boss!!!

The label Rock Of Angel Records

MH: When did the label ROCK OF ANGEL RECORDS get involved? How did the contact come about?

MV: I’ll have to beat around the bush a bit on that one! Because exact names and processes must remain internal. To paraphrase, I asked an „acquaintance“ which label he would see our band on. He gave me two tips. The first contact also called me back directly and wanted to hear the material. Before he had heard it, I got an email with „usual“ conditions, how bands are signed at the moment. These are then so-called „distribution deals“. You as a band pay practically EVERYTHING! And the label throws the CD on the market and then leaves you to your fate. Then the man listened to our CD and suddenly offered me another, new deal! The interest was great! However, I had two tips!

At contact two, I noticed that this Greek label has a man sitting here in Germany. That made the contact a little smoother. Procedure: I wrote him a short WhatsApp whether they would be interested in a new band. I got an answer 10 minutes later. He told me that I should send him the material. So I sent him the mp3 of the CD by mail. Our CD has 60 minutes playing time. Exactly after 80 minutes came the feedback with the offer for a deal! I have never experienced anything like that in my career. Normally the fight for a record deal was hard and difficult and often without return. With BLACK & DAMNED’s record, we basically had a deal in hand within 1 day! And the cooperation with Rock Of Angel Records is sensational!!!

MH: How did Rock Of Angel Records support you?

MV: The label does EVERYTHING for us! So all the business stuff that you can’t really do as a band! The complete promotion, placement of the videos, Spotify, magazines, CD pressing and distribution. Even contacts for a tour have been made through the label. They even advised us on which songs we should release as videos and singles. Because of course they have incredible experience with fans reaction. I know that such statements come often, but we are really like a small family with ROAR. Direct words are spoken here and everyone is there for each other!

Origin and meaning of the songs

MH: Who is responsible for the songwriting? Were some of the songs already in the drawer and just waiting for the right moment?

MV: Nope, there was no drawer material at all. What happened was that I got up in the morning and went to the studio armed with a cup of coffee. There I listened to myself. And what I found inside me, I beat into the recording tracks! So every song came into being without a calculation or plan. I didn’t know until the first notes I played, what would come out in the evening! And so it also happened that during the day the song changed.

Do you like an example?! The song „Decide On Your Destiny“ is more of a ballad, I’d say. When I started this song in the morning, I was on a ruckus. I programmed some drum beats that were very heavy and played some notes with the guitar. But after 1-2 hours I suddenly felt different vibes in this song. And so the song changed from a beater to a strummer!

MH: With which song did it start and why? Which song completed the album last?

MV: The first song was „Salvation“. Why? Well, because it was the first one! Since there was no concept or plan, it was just the first idea that came out of my guitar. The last song we wrote was „The 13th Sign“. Possibly there would have been more songs. But when we realized that with 12 songs we already had an hour of playing time we decided not to write any more songs.

MH: How was the album recorded? Who played the instruments when there were only two of you at the beginning?

MV: We both have a studio at home. I recorded the guitars and bass at my place and sent them on to Bobbes. The drums I programmed first. But we didn’t want programmed drums on the CD. So Axel recorded the drums at his studio. So these are „real“ drums! On a few songs I played some keys. But we wanted really good keys, so we asked Mackenrott (Masterplan) to record them for us. He did! And then the whole thing was prepared at Bobbes so that Achim Köhler could complete it.

Summer, sun, happiness! Or not?

MH: Which song had the most unusual origin story? (I heard something about summer, sun, balcony, woman and a message from Bobbes!)

MV: What you hear so much?!?! Yes, Bobbes sent me a WhatsApp on which he sang a line with melody. It was the words „Heavenly Creatures Heavenly Lies“ He asked if I could make a song out of it. It was a very „lovely“ melody. I was sitting on the balcony with my wife in the beautiful sunshine and having coffee. My wife was immediately enthusiastic about the melody and warbled it constantly. That was too much „Nice“ for me then!!! I went into the studio and said to myself inwardly: „I will give you „Happiness“ and „Sunshine“!!! And I tried to make the most melancholic and gloomy song out of it!!! And I succeeded! By the way, one of my strongest songs I have ever written!

MH: „Born Again“ is for me one of the best songs on the album with a very powerful chorus. The song is about a second chance, a rebirth, so to speak. What’s it all about?

MV: You hit it thematically exactly! You should never give up or throw something away. Because sometime the sheet turns to the good! You just have to want it and then notice when it’s time! Then grab and go on!

Unusual sounds

MH: „The Wardress“ begins and ends with unusual sounds? How did this idea come about and which plucked instrument produces these sounds?

MV: This is an Indian sitar (Wikipedia ). When „playing around“ I found the sound and the melody so cool. And then I tried to write a song to go with it. So I tried to pick up the vibes of the sitar melody and that’s how „The Wardress“ came into being!

MH: Can you tell me your favorite track on the album? Everyone has their own personal favorites, even if you love the whole album.

MV: Of course I love the whole album. The song I like to listen to the most is „Wispre In The Dark“. I am most proud of „War Is Just Another Word For Hell“. There I succeeded purely musically a masterpiece. A song with brutal emotions and depth.

BLACK & DAMNED, risen from ruins of cultural life!

MH: Overall, the theme of the album is gloomy. At the moment, the world is indeed not looking rosy. Unrest, wars and environmental destruction have become an integral part of human existence. COVID 19 puts the crown on the whole chaos.

Does the world no longer offer room for cheerfulness and merriment?

MV: Please watch the video for „Born Again“! In the middle part you see that we now have nonsense in our heads! I don’t know any band where there is so much laughter as with us! We are absolutely positive! Everything will move for the good for us! And with fun life is much nicer and healthier! But life or the universe always has two sides. Ying and Yang just. Where there is light there is also shadow! We make you aware of the shadows and then show you where you get light from!

MH: How do you deal with all the frustration, anger and helplessness in the face of all the chaos?

MV: As I said, we have no frustration. And we don’t feel helpless either. The situation is different from what you are used to, okay…But you have to orient yourself to circumstances and then choose and act anew. Every situation has its advantages. You just have to choose new strategies.

MH: Is BLACK & DAMNED a means for coping with the present, a rock in the surf, so to speak? (For me personally, music has always been a miracle cure in all situations of life! It still carries something magical into this world).

MV: Music is magic! You are right! For us, making music is an unavoidable task! Music is inside of us. And we have to bring it to the outside! Otherwise we would burst! You will never see me without music playing on the side. I can’t express that in words at all. I’m so happy that we meet so many people who love our music and buy the CDs because this music makes them happy and fulfilled! This in turn fulfills us!

The mates

MH: How and when did the other members (drummer Axel Winkler, guitarist Aki Reissmann, bassist Ali Gözübüyük) join the band? Did you have certain people in mind or how do you imagine that?

MV: When we realized that we will make a CD out of the whole thing, there was immediately also the desire to present this live with a band. Thus, a band had to come! And there was immediately clear who the cast is! Ali is the funniest and coolest bass player in the world. Axel has been drumming on a professional level for so long, and Aki has been my companion in the business and my best buddy for 13 years. And all three of them were in immediately and without compulsion!

MH: Will Axel Mackenrott continue to support you with his keyboard in the future?

MV: I can’t answer that exactly at the moment. Live is such a thing. If Axel should be on the road with Masterplan he can’t play with us. Therefore we plan for the time being that the keys must come live from the tape. We don’t want to look for another keyboarder. I don’t know anyone better than Axel. And who wants to take the second choice?!?!

MH: I also miss the guy with the horny facial hair on the right side of the band photo. Where did he go? Seriously… Why did you shave off the beard? I thought the beard was cool.

MV: My beard is off! I had never worn a beard until Lockdown. During production, shaving was unnecessary. Then all of a sudden there was this hedge in my face. Yeah, it looked cool, a special kind somehow. Now on New Year’s Eve, the beard was even longer than on the photos. Always was in the way. The beard stucked in the zipper of the jacket making the jacket, during eating he was in the mouth and without brushing I looked like a wild caveman! So I got up on New Year’s Eve in the morning, went to do pee and saw myself in the mirror. And EVERYTHING in me shouted: „Free your face!!!“

Visions of the future

It started as a two-man-project! Now you are a complete band and have a great album at the start. The thing has started rolling mightily and it will probably not remain a flash in the pan.

MH: What does the future look like for BLACK & DAMNED?

MV: Our future looks wonderful! We are on the way to the sun directly past the stars!!! We will roll up the field that you will be dizzy! There is so much energy and creativity in us that there is no turning back! We get a lot of positive feedbacks which confirm us now that we did everything right! And therefore there is only one gas: FULL THROTTLE!!!

MH: I heard that you are already writing new songs. In which direction will the sound of BLACK & DAMNED develop?

MV: Right! There are currently about 6 demos finished. We don’t plan to move anything in a certain direction. Therefore the second disc will be once again incalculable! But we didn’t plan anything then and we don’t plan anything now. Therefore nothing will change stylistically. We are like we are and that’s why we sound like we sound!

MH: Will the new comrades-in-arms participate in the songwriting and give the sound even more facets?

MV: Aki will also participate in songwriting this time. He is a very experienced guitarist. Not to tap this potential would be stupid. We will sit down together to work out the guitars. Of course, this will broaden the horizon.

MH: The current album was made in record time. How much time do you want to take for the next album?

MV: This record time was first fun. Whether we succeed in writing a record within the time limit. That was cool. But it’s not really necessary! We will not limit ourselves now. It runs like it runs. But for me it’s a little bit like that, that when I’m in a „flow“ I „birth“ several songs within a few days! And as soon as we have everything together we go to produce the thing. Prisoners we make no more!!! Therefore, without a fixed plan: Songs will be ready at the end of summer!

Heavy Metal

aus deutschen Landen mit der Gruppe BLACK & DAMNED (Facebook ). Kennt ihr nicht? Gibt’s auch nicht so lange. Genauer gesagt sind die Band und das Album erst im letzten Jahr entstanden, und zwar in Rekordzeit. Dies ist natürlich der COVID-19 Krise geschuldet, die alles kulturelle Leben eingefroren hat. So bleibt den Künstlern nur die Flucht in die kreative Schaffensphase, so auch bei Roland “Bobbes” Seidel und Michael Vetter. Müssen sehr sympathische Männer sein, denn Ruckizucki hatte man sich noch Verstärkung geholt und fertig war „BLACK & DAMNED“. Was dürft Ihr nun von dem Album erwarten, dass nicht Jahre der Entwicklung benötigt hat?

Ne Menge guter Songs

BLACK & DAMNED besteht nicht aus blutjungen Neulingen, sondern aus gestandenen Musikern. Nur Profis können so ein Vorhaben umsetzen. So muss man schon staunen, dass sie ein Album mit ganzen 12 Songs vollgepackt haben, die eine beträchtliche Spielzeit aufweisen. Von liebloser Zusammenschusterei ist glücklicherweise nichts zu hören, so dass Ihr Ihr Euch auf hochwertigen melodischen Heavy-Metal freuen könnt.

Somit ist der Opener „Salvation“ nicht nur eine schöne Sternschnuppe, die kurze Freude bereitet und schnell verblasst. Vielmehr ist diese Hymne ein leuchtender Stern neben vielen anderen am Nachthimmel von „Heavenly Creatures“. „Salvation“ startet mit forschem Drumming und kreischenden Gitarren. Er entwickelt sich zu einem flotten Power-Metal-Song. Hier gibt es gleich ein Markenzeichen von BLACK & DAMNED zu hören. Der ganze Sound wird von Keybordsamples unterlegt. Allerdings wird es nicht übertrieben, sondern dezent oder akzentuiert eingesetzt ohne es zu übertreiben. Für diese zusätzliche klangliche Dimension hat man sich keinen geringeren als Axel Mackenrott (MASTERPLAN) an Bord geholt.

Dunkelheit und Licht

bilden eine Coexistenz. BLACK & DAMNED haben versucht auf Ihrem Album diese beiden Welten zu vereinen. Und dies ist Ihnen zweifelsohne gelungen So hat das ganze Material einen düsteren Touch, ist aber gleichzeitig geprägt durch fabelhafte eingängige Hooklines. Ihr könnt quasi irgendeinen Song anspielen und werdet diese Merkmale feststellen.

So auch beispielsweise beim Song „Born Again“, der in die gleiche Kerbe schlägt wie der Opener. Hier geht es mit richtig Power zur Sache und der Song galoppiert mit druckvollen Drums davon und lässt das Metalherz erbeben. „Born Again“ ist auch ein gutes Beispiel für die hervorragenden und vielseitigen gesanglichen Qualitäten. Neben dem charismatischen Sänger Roland “Bobbes” Seidel wird der mehrstimmige Chorus perfekt eingesetzt, der dem Song mächtig einheizt.

BLACK & DAMNED verpassen den Songs durchweg immer etwas eigenständiges und besonderes. So z.B. überrascht „The Wardress“ zu Beginn mit Klängen eines fernöstlich anmutenden Zupfinstruments, bevor der verspielte feurige Instrumentalpart den Song zu einer wahren Metal-Hymne werden lässt. Die Gitarren haben viel Gelegenheit sich in jeglicher Form auszutoben. Rhythmus -und Tempiwechsel bestimmen diesen Song. Es ist im ganzen Bombast sogar Platz für ein kleines verträumtes Gitarrensolo.

Balladen

sind immer so eine Sache, da sie einfach langweilig sein können. In diesem Fall passen sie aber gut ins Konzept. „War Is Just Another Word For Hell“ ist ein atmosphärischer Song mit einigen netten Details und einem mächtig bombastischen Refrain. Das gleiche gilt für die epische Ballade „Decide On Your Destiny“, wo der Sänger sogar mal kurze growlartige Sequenzen aufblitzen lässt. Das Keybord unterstützt neben dem monumentalen Refrain den epischen Anstrich des Songs.

Warriors

„We Are Warriors“ fängt vielversprechend an. Mit blechernen Kriegstrommeln und Dudelsack beginnt das Spektakel und dann brechen die geilen fetzigen Riffs los. Sehr geil gemacht und spätestens bei dem kräftigen dunklen mehrstimmigen Gesang kommen bei mir MANOWAR-Assoziationen hoch. Leider wird dieses kraftvolle Gesangselement zu wenig genutzt. Hier hätten mehr tiefere und härtere Töne meiner Meinung nach besser gepasst. Der anschließende Refrain ist mir zu hoch gestimmt ist und leiert irgendwie vor sich hin. So wird leider die Power rausgenommen, die man im Vorfeld so vortrefflich aufgebaut hat.

Daher finde ich beispielsweise die düsteren Brecher „Whisper In The Dark“, „The World Bleed“ und „Dreams To Stay Alive“ in der Hinsicht konsequenter und straighter umgesetzt und treffen damit zumindest meinen Geschmack voll und ganz.

Fazit

BLACK & DAMNED präsentieren mit „Heavenly Creatures“ ein Füllhorn von Metal-Hymnen. Es ist ein durchdachtes, abwechslungsreiches Album geworden, dass viel Kreativität und Detailverliebtheit der Musiker offenbart. Man könnte BLACK & DAMNED fast als die dunkle Seite von HELLOWEEN oder GAMMA RAY bezeichnen. Fans von rassigem Heavy-Power-Metal mit hochmelodischer Komponente können bedenkenlos zuschlagen. Man darf gespannt sein, wohin die Reise mit BLACK & DAMNED noch gehen wird. Durch das reichlich vorhandene Potential könnte sich der Sound in viele interessante Richtungen entwickeln.

„Heavenly Creatures“ wird es auf CD und Vinyl geben, wobei auf der Vinyl nur 10 von 12 Songs enthalten sind. Leider finde ich die Songauswahl auf der Vinyl nicht perfekt gelungen, da genau zwei Songs gestrichen wurden, die mir gefallen. Dabei handelt es sich um „Decide On Your Destiny“ und „Dreams To Stay Alive“. Ich hätte lieber auf andere Songs verzichtet, aber das ist natürlich eine rein persönliche Geschmacksfrage.

Ich möchte noch anmerken, dass das geile Cover ein echter Hingucker ist, genauso wie die erstklassige Shirts, die die Band anzubieten hat. Der Skull-Print ist wirklich hammermäßig. Hier könnt Ihr mit Glück noch ein paar limitierte Bundles inclusive T-Shirt abstauben.

from Germany with BLACK & DAMNED (Facebook ). Don’t you know them? They haven’t been around that long either. To be more precise, the band and the album came into being last year, and in record time. This, of course, is due to the COVID-19 crisis, which has frozen all cultural life. So the only thing left for the artists is to escape into the creative phase, and this is also the case with Roland „Bobbes“ Seidel and Michael Vetter. Must be very sympathetic men, because they had gotten reinforcement after a short time and finished was „BLACK & DAMNED“. What can you now expect from the album that has not needed years of development?

A lot of good songs

BLACK & DAMNED is not made up of young newcomers, but of experienced musicians. Only professionals can realize such a project. So you have to be amazed that they packed an album with a whole 12 songs, which have a considerable playing time. Fortunately, there is nothing to be heard of loveless cobbling together, so that you can look forward to high-quality melodic heavy metal.

Thus, the opener „Salvation“ is not just one beautiful shooting star that gives brief pleasure and quickly fades. Rather, this anthem is a shining star among many others in the nightsky of „Heavenly Creatures“. „Salvation“ kicks off with brash drumming and screeching guitars. It develops into a snappy power metal song. Here you can immediately hear a trademark of BLACK & DAMNED. The whole sound is underlaid by keyboard samples. It is used discreetly or accentuated without overdoing it. For this additional sonic dimension they got no less than Axel Mackenrott (Masterplan) on board.

Dark and light

form a coexistence. BLACK & DAMNED have tried to unite these two worlds on their album. And this they have succeeded without a doubt. So all the material has a dark touch, but at the same time is characterized by fantastic catchy hooklines. You can play any song and you will notice these characteristics.

This is also the case with the song „Born Again“, which hits the same note as the opener. Here it goes with real power to the point and the song gallops away with powerful drums and makes the metal heart tremble. „Born Again“ is also a good example of the excellent and versatile vocal qualities. Besides the charismatic singer Roland „Bobbes“ Seidel, the polyphonic chorus used perfectly, which heat up the song mightily.

BLACK & DAMNED always give the songs something individual and special. For example, „The Wardress“ surprises at the beginning with sounds of a Far Eastern plucked instrument, before the playful fiery instrumental part makes the song a true metal anthem. The guitars have plenty of opportunity to let off steam in any form. Rhythm -and tempo changes determine this song. There is even room for a small dreamy guitar solo in all the bombast.

Ballads

are always such a thing, as they can simply be boring. „War Is Just Another Word For Hell“ is an atmospheric song with some nice details and a mighty bombastic chorus. The same goes for the epic ballad „Decide On Your Destiny“, where the singer even flashes short growl-like sequences once in a while. The keybord supports the epic touch of the song next to the monumental chorus.

Warriors

„We Are Warriors“ starts promisingly. With tinny war drums and Bagpipes the spectacle begins and then the horny wild riffs break loose. Very cool done and at the latest with the powerful dark polyphonic vocals MANOWAR associations come up with me. Unfortunately, this powerful vocal element is used too little. The following chorus is too high-pitched for me and is somehow leery. Here, more deeper and harder tones would have fit better in my opinion. So the power is taken out, which one has built up so excellently in the run-up.

Therefore, I find, for example, the gloomy breakers „Whisper In The Dark“, „The World Bleed“ and „Dreams To Stay Alive“ in this respect more consistent and straighter implemented and thus meet at least my taste completely.

Result

BLACK & DAMNED present with „Heavenly Creatures“ a cornucopia of metal anthems. It has become a thoughtful, varied album that reveals a lot of creativity and attention to detail of the musicians. You could almost call BLACK & DAMNED the dark side of HELLOWEEN or GAMMA RAY. Fans of racy heavy power metal with highly melodic components can strike without hesitation. One can be curious where the journey with BLACK & DAMNED will go. Due to the abundant potential, the sound could develop in many interesting directions.

„Heavenly Creatures“ will be available on CD and Vinyl, with only 10 of 12 songs on the vinyl. Unfortunately, I find the song selection on the Vinyl not perfectly succeeded, because exactly two songs were deleted, which I like. These are „Decide On Your Destiny“ and „Dreams To Stay Alive“ I would have preferred to do without other songs, but that is of course a purely personal matter of taste.

I would like to note that the killer cover is a real eye-catcher, as well as the top-notch shirts that the band has to offer. The skull print is really awesome. With a lot of luck you can get some strictly limited bundles including a t-shirt here.

Dabei erhoffen wir uns zumindest in der zweiten Jahreshälfte wieder einen Einzug der Normalität, was das soziale und kulturelle Leben angeht. So schauen wir mal auf ein paar Veröffentlichungen, die zu Beginn 2021 anstehen werden. Und diese versprechen schon mal einen heißen Start in das kommende Jahr.

BLACK & DAMNED

aus Deutschland werden am 29.01.2020 ihr erstes Studioalbum „Heavenly Creatures“ veröffentlichen. BLACK & DAMNED (Facebook ) sind ein Beispiel dafür, dass aus Krisen auch etwas wunderbares entstehen kann. Durch die aufgezwungene Seuchenpause haben sich die Musiker Roland Seidel und Michael Vetter zusammengetan und mit BLACK & DAMNED eine Power-Metal-Band erschaffen. In kürzester Zeit haben sie 12! Songs geschrieben, im Studio mit anderen Musikern eingespielt und alles wurde durch ACHIM KÖHLER (u.a. PRIMAL FEAR, SODOM, BRAINSTORM) gemischt und gemastert. Wer jetzt meint, dass alles nur irgendwie schnell und lieblos zusammengezimmert wurde, der liegt völlig daneben. Eine Review der Scheibe wird auf `metal-heads.de´natürlich noch folgen. Hier schon mal eine Kostprobe mit „Salvation“…

REZET

stammen ebenfalls aus Deutschland und sind als Band schon länger Teil der Metalszene. Begonnen haben sie als Thrash-Band. Mit hochwertigem speedigen In-Die-Fresse-Metal hat man bisher die werte Hörerschaft weggeblasen. Man entwickelte sich allerdings weiter und fügte dem Sound andere Facetten hinzu, so dass der Sound insgesamt vielschichtiger klingt. Dies hat man schon beim letzten Album „Deal With It“ gezeigt. REZET (Facebook ) werden mit ihrem neuen Album „Truth In Between“ am 29.01.2020 eindrucksvoll beweisen, was sie noch alles auf dem Kasten haben. Der Song „“Populate. Delete. Repeat.“ haut schon mal schön in die Vollen. Geile fette Riffs! Schöner Groove! Und richtig Power! Schaut Euch das crazy Video an und dreht die Volume auf!

FIREFORCE

kommen nicht aus Deutschland, aber auch nicht so richtig weit weg, nämlich aus Belgien. FIREFORCE (Facebook ) starten mit dem neuen Frontmann Matt Asselberghs in die musikalische Schlacht und feuern am 15.01.2021 ihre neues Album „Rage Of War“ aus den Rohren. In der Tat lyrisch stellt das Thema nichts herausragendes dar, aber es zählt schließlich vor allem, was klanglich dabei rumkommt. Und der Power-Metal kann sich tatsächlich ganz gut hören lassen. Hier bekommt Ihr mit „Ram It“ schon mal einen kleinen Vorgeschmack.

VOLTER

lassen ihn wieder auferstehen, den einzigartigen Vollgasrocker LEMMY! Die Hannoveraner Band VOLTER (Facebook ) lässt es richtig krachen und servieren schnörkellosen schmutzigen Rock´n Roll Kost a la MOTÖRHEAD. Am 22.01.2020 gibt es mit „High Gain Overkill“ voll auf die Ohren. Das Review wird es hier auf `metal-heads.de´zu lesen geben. Bis dahin will ich nicht überflüssig daherlabern. Kippt Euch ein oder drei Whiskey hinter die Binde und feiert bei dem folgenden Song „High Gain Overkill“ wieder und wieder ab… Besser kann man nicht in das neue Jahr rocken! Prost und Guten Rutsch!
