Es kommt daher wie ein Mittelding aus Ausstellungskatalog und Kunstprojekt. Oder ein Katalog über Kunstprojekte. Diese Kunstprojekte, wenn man so will, entspringen einem einzigartigen Kollektiv. Es firmiert unter dem Begriff Black Metal Rainbows. Und es vereint unzählige Kunstschaffende und deren Arbeiten.

Das Buch „Black Metal Rainbows“ ist eine über 400 Seiten starke, vollfarbige Sammlung. Sie enthält radikale, queere und linke Schriften und Kunstwerke. Sie alle enthüllen den Black Metal als Genre der Offenheit und Inklusion.

Black Metal Rainbows: Gratwanderung zwischen tiefschwarz und grellbunt

Black Metal ist ein Paradoxon. Die Verantwortlichen beschreiben das folgendermaßen: „Als laute, unterirdische Metalrichtung voller Gewalt und Bösartigkeit hat es die Vorstellungskraft der Welt durch seinen harten und gleichzeitig extravaganten Stil und seine berüchtigte Geschichte von Brandstiftung, Blasphemie und Mord gefangen genommen.“ Für die beiden Herausgeber Daniel Lukes und Stanimir Panayotov sei der Black Metal heute „nichts weniger als ein kulturelles Schlachtfeld zwischen denen, die ihn für nationalistische und rassistische Zwecke beanspruchen, und denen, die sagen: Nazi Black Metal, verpiss dich!“

„Black Metal Rainbows“ ist verstörend. Es tritt eine Gratwanderung an zwischen hasserfüllt, schwarz und böse auf der einen Seite und regenbogenfarben, bunt und schräg auf der anderen Seite. Über 80 Kunstschaffende schrieben, malten, zeichneten, designten, diskutierten und erdachten die einzelnen Inhalte.

Unter Beteiligung von über 80 Kunstschaffenden

Darunter sind beispielsweise Haela Ravenna Hunt-Hendrix von der us-amerikanischen Post-Black-Metal-Band Liturgy. Außerdem beteiligte sich Margaret Killjoy von Feminazgûl, einer us-amerikanischen, feministische Black-Metal-Band aus North Carolina. Darüber hinaus ist auch die us-amerikanische Wissenschaftlerin Laina Dawes involviert. Oder Eugene S. Robinson von der Rockband Oxbow und viele, viele mehr.

Die Formate und Ausdrucksformen der Kunstschaffenden sind dabei vielfältig. Selbstredend ist das gesamte Buch vollfarbig gestaltet – von Designerin Jaci Raia – und vor allem eines: bunt! Es folgen Essays auf Interviews, Comics auf Erzählungen. Zentraler Topos ist dabei der kreative, nonkonformistische und antiautoritäre Geist des Black Metal.

Black Metal Rainbows: Was ist wirklich „trve“?

Das Gesamtkunstwerk stößt zum Denken und zum Austausch an. Es spielt provokant mit der Frage, was wirklich „trve“ ist. Black Metal Rainbows reißt Mauern ein, stellt den Black Metal als offen, inklusiv und grenzenlos dar. Es ist ein denkwürdiges Stück Kunst und Musikgeschichte.

Übrigens gibt es zum Buch auch den passenden Soundtrack. Denn vor dem Erscheinen des Buchs wurde das Black Metal Rainbows Compilation Album veröffentlicht. Der Erlös kam gemeinnützigen Organisationen zugute, die sich für LGBTQ+-Jugendliche einsetzen. Denn diese sind weltweit häufig Opfer von Unterdrückung und Misshandlung durch faschistische und konservative Kräfte. Über 100 Underground- und Black-Metal-, Noise- und elektronische Kunstschaffende haben sich hierfür zusammengeschlossen.

Black metal is a paradox. As the editors describe it, „A noisy underground metal genre brimming with violence and virulence, it has captured the world’s imagination for its harsh yet flamboyant style and infamous history involving arson, blasphemy, and murder.“ For co-editors Daniel Lukes and Stanimir Panayotov said black metal today was „nothing less than a cultural battleground between those who claim it for nationalist and racist ends, and those who say: Nazi black metal fvck off!““

“Black Metal Rainbows” is irritating. There is a tightrope walk between hateful, black and evil on the one hand and rainbow-colored, colorful and weird on the other. Over 80 artists wrote, painted, drew, designed, discussed and conceived the individual content.

Among them are, for example, Haela Ravenna Hunt-Hendrix from the American post-black metal band Liturgy. Also participating was Margaret Killjoy of Feminazgûl, an American feminist black metal band from North Carolina. The American researcher Laina Dawes is also involved. Or Eugene S. The formats and forms of expression of the artists are diverse. It goes without saying that the entire book is designed in full color – by designer Jaci Raia – and one thing above all: colourful! The total work of art stimulates thought and exchange. It plays provocatively with the question of what is really “trve”. Breaking down walls, Black Metal Rainbows presents black metal as open, inclusive and limitless. It is a memorable piece of art and music history.

There is also a soundtrack to accompany the book. Because before the publication of the book, the Black Metal Rainbows compilation album was released. It funded benefit non-profit organizations that support LGBTQ+ young people. Because they are often victims of oppression and abuse by fascist and conservative forces worldwide. Over 100 underground and black metal, noise and electronic artists have come together for this.
