ANA – „The Art Of Letting Go“ EP Review

ANA (Facebook) aus Australien waren mir kein Begriff, bis ich sie auf YouTube entdeckte, als ich auf der Suche nach neuen Songs für unsere Playlist ‚METALHEADs new stuff‘ war. Der Song „Ouroboros“ weckte jedenfalls meine Neugier und tatsächlich haben mich ANA mit ihrer aktuellen EP „The Art Of Letting Go“ überzeugt.

Ich war sehr angetan von „Ouroboros“. Feinster melodischer (Power-)Metal mit einer tollen Sängerin kann mich schon begeistern. Der ‚Ouroboros‘ als Symbol der sich selbst fressenden Schlange ziert übrigens auch das Cover der EP.

Die Band kann jedenfalls ihre Stärken wunderbar ausspielen. Das Songwriting ist wirklich gelungen und sorgt für gute Unterhaltung. Und „Ouroboros“ ist mit 06:30 Minuten auch kein Sprinter. Aber alles wirkt gut durchdacht und hat schon fast progressiven Charakter. Trotzdem kommt der Sound eingängig rüber. Und rein handwerklich gibt es nix zu meckern. Luft nach oben gibt es natürlich noch, aber das hört sich schon alles verdammt gut an. Die Band scheint mir auch noch sehr jung zu sein, aber ist dabei wild und entschlossen. Mir ist nur ein Rätsel, warum alle außer Sängerin Anna Khristenko eine Maske tragen. Verstecken müssen sie sich mit der tollen Leistung ja wirklich nicht. Auch das Gitarrensolo wird famos gespielt. Somit ist die Single „Ouroboros“ jedenfalls schon mal echt gelungen!

Ausgefeilt und ideenreich

Und es bleibt nicht bei dem einen guten Song. Schon der Opener „I’m Not the One“ gewährt ganz andere Einblicke in die Fähigkeiten von ANA. In dieser sehr gelungenen Power-Ballade zeigt Sängerin Anna direkt sehr eindrucksvoll, dass sie nicht nur eine schöne Erscheinung ist, sondern ihre gesanglichen Fähigkeiten ebenfalls Klasse haben. Außerdem wird man mit einem hochklassigen Gitarrensolo verwöhnt und die coolen Klänge einer Hammond Orgel sind bei mir immer willkommen, auch wenn sie sich erst am Ende offenbaren.

Ich finde, dass diese Band viel Potential hat. Laut Label wird sie als Symphonic Metal Band beschrieben, was ich aber gar nicht als primäres Aushängeschild sehen würde. Es weckt eventuell falsche Erwartungen. Denn symphonische Elemente sind nicht das prägende Merkmal. Ich bin der Meinung, dass die Band mehr zu bieten hat. Zumal die orchestralen Synthies zwar ganz passabel sind und ihren Zweck erfüllen, aber (noch) nicht mit den Großen in diesem Genre mithalten können (siehe z.B. XANDRIA letztes Album „The Wonders Still Waiting„). Mit einem richtigen Orchester würde das noch mal imposanter klingen! Aber das ist ja auch nicht mal eben so als junge aufstrebende Band einfach zu realisieren.

So ein Song wie „Scars“, der am meisten symphonischen Charakter auf der EP besitzt, wäre mit einem richtigen Orchester dann wohl noch beeindruckender. Trotzdem ist es ein wunderschöner Song, was hier vor allem am Annas schönem Gesang zu verdanken ist.

Gefühlvoll und heavy

Die Synthies sind aber nicht auf orchestrale Klänge beschränkt, sondern treten mit ganz unterschiedlichen Sounds auf. Somit sorgen sie für coole Effekte und haben durchaus ihre Berechtigung in den Kompositionen. Deshalb kann ich mit den Synthies ganz gut leben. Sehr gut gefällt mir auch der progressive Touch der Songs. Man zeigt sich als Band sehr ideenreich und variabel. Dies erschließt sich z.B. sehr eindrucksvoll bei den Songs „Sirens“ und „Moth“. Beide beginnen zunächst sehr bezaubernd balladesk, verändern dann aber ihre Richtung und werden zu energischen Power-Metal Songs, die es echt in sich haben und epische Gefilde erstürmen.

Der Beginn von „Moth“ ist ohne Zweifel besonders bezaubernd und ergreifend. Das Piano mit Sängerin Anna ist ein wahrer Genuß und der Übergang in den treibenden Part ist super gelungen. Allerdings hätte ich mir nach diesem verdammt starken Riffing, welches kurz ab Minute 02:10 zu hören ist, eine härte Fortsetzung des Songs in diesem Stil gewünscht. Doch es klingt auch so alles sehr gut und das immer wiederkehrende Piano als klangliches Thema des Songs ist sehr gut umgesetzt.

Fazit

ANA können sehr stolz auf ihr Debüt sein. Die EP „The Art Of Letting Go“ enthüllt ein starkes Potential mit fünf starken Songs, die mit viel Liebe zum Detail und der Vorliebe für progressive Songstrukturen zu gefallen wissen. Dabei entsteht ein wunderbares Gleichgewicht zwischen charmanter gefühlvoller Darbietung und energischen kraftvollen Metal-Eskapaden. Auf diesem sehr fruchtbaren Boden könnte etwas Großes erwachsen!

I didn‘ know ANA (Facebook) from Australia until I discovered them on YouTube when I was looking for new songs for our ‚METALHEADs new stuff‘ playlist. The song „Ouroboros“ piqued my curiosity and ANA really won me over with their latest EP „The Art Of Letting Go“.

I was thrilled by „Ouroboros“. The finest melodic (power) metal with a great singer can really inspire me. By the way, the ‚Ouroboros‘ as a symbol of the self-eating snake also adorns the cover of the EP.

In any case, the band can play to their strengths wonderfully. The songwriting is really successful and provides good entertainment. And with 06:30 minutes playing time, „Ouroboros“ is no short affair at all. But everything seems well thought out and has a light progressive character. Nevertheless, the sound is catchy. And there’s nothing to complain about in terms of craftsmanship. Of course, there is still room for improvement, but it all sounds damn good. The band still seems very young to me, but they are wild and determined. The only thing that puzzles me is why everyone except singer Anna Khristenko is wearing a mask. They really don’t have to hide with this great performance 😉 The guitar solo is also played brilliantly. So the single „Ouroboros“ is a real success!

Sophisticated and full of ideas

And it doesn’t stop at the one good song. The opener „I’m Not the One“ already provides a completely different insight into ANA’s abilities. In this very successful power ballad, singer Anna immediately shows impressively that she is fortunately not only a beautiful appearance, but that her vocal abilities are also top class. You are also treated to a top-class guitar solo and the cool sounds of a Hammond organ are always welcome, even if they only reveal themselves at the end.

I think this band has a lot of potential. According to the label, they are described as a symphonic metal band, but I wouldn’t see that as their primary label. It might raise false expectations. Because symphonic elements are not the defining feature. In my opinion, the band has more to offer. Especially as the orchestral synths are quite acceptable and fulfill their purpose, but can’t (yet) keep up with the big names in this genre.(see e.g. XANDRIA last album „The Wonders Still Waiting„)

A song like „Scars“, which has the most symphonic character on the EP, would sound even better with a real orchestra, but that would be difficult to realize financially. Nevertheless, it is a wonderful song, which is mainly due to Anna’s beautiful vocals.

Emotional and heavy

However, the synths are not limited to orchestral sounds, but appear with very different approaches. They therefore provide cool effects and are definitely justified in the compositions. That’s why I can live with the synths quite well. I also really like the progressive touch of the songs. The band is very imaginative and variable. This can be heard very impressively in the songs „Sirens“ and „Moth“, for example. Both start out as enchanting ballads, but then change direction and become energetic power metal songs that really pack a punch and storm epic realms.

The beginning of „Moth“ is without doubt particularly enchanting and moving. The piano with singer Anna is a real treat and the transition into the driving part is very well done. However, after this damn strong riffing, which can be heard briefly from minute 02:10, I would have liked a heavier continuation of the song in this style. Nevertheless, it all sounds very good and the recurring piano as the song’s sonic theme is very well realized.

Conclusion

ANA can be very proud of their debut. The EP „The Art Of Letting Go“ reveals a strong potential with five impressive songs, which are pleasing with their attention to detail and penchant for progressive song structures. The result is a wonderful balance between charming, soulful performances and energetic, powerful metal escapades. Something great could grow out from this fertile musical ground!
