HALESTORM – „Back From The Dead“ Review

mit kräftigem Biss werden uns am 06.05.2022 HALESTORM (Facebook, Homepage) mit ihrem Album „Back From The Dead“ vor den Latz knallen. Lzzy Hale hatte die Band 1998 mit ihrem Bruder Arejay Hale ins Leben gerufen. Seitdem kämpfen sie ihren Kampf im musikalischen Business. Ein Zuckerschlecken war es sicherlich nicht immer, doch sie haben sich durch alle Widrigkeiten gewühlt und können nun auf sehr beachtliche Erfolge zurückblicken. Sie haben sich zu einem weltweit wahnsinnig erfolgreichen Act entwickelt. Auf der ganzen Welt haben sie zahllose Fanscharen um sich geschart. Doch auch an einer solchen Band zieht die Pandemiekrise nicht spurlos vorüber.

Erweiterung des Horizonts

Man möge mir verzeihen, wenn ich im nächsten Absatz den interessanten Pressetext von Oktober Promotion einfach übernehme. Ist sonst nicht meine Art, aber ich halte ihn für sehr informativ und denke, dass man diesen so einfach mal zur Kenntnis nehmen muss. Also los gehts mit den Projekten, wo Lzzy Hale invoviert war:

Auch als die Welt dann Anfang 2020 in den kollektiven Winterschlafmodus gehen musste, war Lzzy alles andere als unproduktiv: Als Gastsängerin arbeitete sie u.a. mit Dee Snider (Twisted Sister), mit In This Moment und Apocalyptica, um danach auch mit Mark Morton (Lamb of God), mit Evanescence, Cory Marks und der mongolischen Ausnahmeband THE HU zu kollaborieren. Zusammen mit drei absoluten Legenden – Corey Taylor von Slipknot, Scott Ian von Anthrax und Slayer-Urgestein Dave Lombardo – nahm sie für die Netflix-Serie Thunder Force den Titelsong auf. Und legte in besagter Konstellation gleich noch ein Cover von The Whos „Long Live Rock“ für den gleichnamigen Dokumentarfilm nach.

Das Ergebnis ihrer Erfahrungen beschreibt Lzzy folgendermaßen:

Ich habe durch diese ganzen Projekte wirklich wahnsinnig viel über mich gelernt“. Ich habe einfach ‚Ja‘ gesagt zu diesen ganzen Abenteuern, und ich denke, ich bin als Künstlerin ganz klar daran gewachsen.

Kopf in den Sand? Nein!

Lzzy Hale war also in Zeiten der Pandemiekrise alles andere als untätig. Ihr Kommentar zum Jahr 2020 lautet so:

Während der Pandemiemonate habe ich viele Songs geschrieben, die eher melancholisch waren, ziemlich hoffnungslos klangen. Es ging ums Auf und Ab des Weltgeschehens. Inzwischen ist die Zeitspanne, die ich Teil dieser Band bin, länger als meine Zeit ohne sie. Und wir hatten ja immer Konzerte. Schon mit 13 sind wir ein paar Mal im Monat auf irgendeiner Bowlingbahn aufgetreten.

Die Situation war daher ganz neu: Zum ersten Mal konnte ich nicht sagen, ob wir wohl jemals wieder spielen würden. Irgendwann habe ich die Musik dann wieder als das genutzt, was sie schon als Teenager für mich war – als Ventil, um das irgendwie zu verarbeiten, worunter wir alle litten. Ich überdachte meine Position und sagte schließlich: ‘Kommt, wir dürfen die Köpfe nicht so hängen lassen. Wir brauchen unsere alte Einstellung zurück:

Lasst uns doch für den Moment das Licht sein und einfach die Tatsache feiern, dass wir weiterleben, dass es Hoffnung gibt für die Zukunft.

Und so begannen wir also damit, Songs zu schreiben, die uns daran erinnern, wer wir wirklich sind und wozu wir fähig sind. Ab da war das unser Motto!

Mit viel Kraft zurück!

Die erste Single „Back From The Dead“ rockt los wie Sau und knallt direkt mit wuchtigen Ohrlaschen rein. Es scheint, als ob HALESTORM die angestaute Energie explosionsartig rauslassen. Von Melancholie keine Spur! Eindrucksvoller kann man sich nicht zurückmelden. Der Song mit seinen gewaltigen Emotionen wird Euch in Ekstase versetzen. Das lässt niemanden kalt! Schon gar nicht, wenn Euch das elektrisierende Gitarrensolo unter Strom setzt. Und davon gibt es so einige auf dem Album.

Voll Auf Die Zwölf

Eines kann HALESTORM auf dem neuen Album jedenfalls nicht vorwerfen: Zurückhaltung! Die Songs sind Rockhymnen, die in Mark und Bein gehen. Das fetzt ohne Ende! Hier gibt es einen Killersong nach dem nächsten! Die Songs wollen sich scheinbar gegenseitig übertreffen. Dabei geht es mal moderner, mal melodischer, mal härter und mal schneller zur Sache.

Allerdings gönnt HALESTORM in der Mitte des Albums mit der klassischen sanften Ballade „Terrible Things“ eine Ruhepause und diese verinnerlicht eine gewisse melancholische Note. Das ist im Rahmen der ganzen knallenden Songs eine zauberhafte Oase der Besinnlichkeit und zarten Emotionalität. Ein schöner unaufdringlicher Song.

Die Ballade „Raise Your Horns“ am Ende des Albums hat aber noch mehr Eindruck bei mir hinterlassen, weil Lzzy Hale hier die volle Schüppe starker Emotion in ihre Stimme legt, obwohl der Song ruhig gehalten ist, was man angesichts des Titels nicht direkt vermuten würde. Ein Song, der mit seinem besonderen Charisma einen perfekten Abschluss dieses Albums bietet. Gänsehaut garantiert!

Abgesehen davon könnt Ihr bei den restlichen neun Songs irgendwo reinhören und werdet von unglaublichen Power und Coolness heimgesucht. Die gesamte Band rockt sich die Seele aus dem Leib. Das werdet Ihr hören und spüren! Da macht auch der Song „The Steeple“ keine Ausnahme!

Fazit

HALESTORM entfachen mit „Back From The Dead“ ein brandheißes Rockfeuer. Auf dem Album wimmelt es nur so von Brandbeschleunigern, die die Flammen immer höher schlagen und schließlich das Rockerherz angesichts der Hitdichte vor Begeisterung explodieren lassen. Dabei wirkt Lzzy Hale so aggressiv wie ein wütender Löwe, fährt die Krallen aus und zeigt die Zähne. Nehmt Euch in Acht vor diesem Album, denn es wird euch packen. Achtung! Bissig!

HALESTORM (Facebook, Homepage) will be releasing their album „Back From The Dead“ on May 6, 2022. Lzzy Hale founded the band in 1998 with her brother Arejay Hale. Since then they fight their battle in the musical business. It certainly hasn’t always been a walk in the park, but they’ve rumbled through all the adversity and can now look back on some very notable successes. They have become an insanely popular act worldwide. All over the world they have gathered countless crowds of fans around them. But the pandemic crisis does not leave such a band unscathed.

Other points of view

Please forgive me if I simply take over the text interesting press release from October Promotion in the next part. It’s usually not my style, but I think it’s very informative and I think you have to take note of it. So here we go with the projects where Lzzy Hale was involved:

And in the same constellation they also recorded a cover of The Whos‘ „Long Live Rock“ for the documentary of the same name.

Lzzy describes the result of her experience as follows:

I’ve really learned an insane amount about myself through all these projects. I just said ‚yes‘ to all of these adventures, and I think I’ve clearly grown as an artist because of it.

Take the Fight

So Lzzy Hale has been anything but idle in times of pandemic crisis. Her commentary on 2020 goes like this:

During the pandemic months I wrote a lot of songs that were rather melancholic, sounded quite hopeless. They were about the ups and downs of world events. Meanwhile, the amount of time I’ve been part of this band is longer than my time without it. And we always had concerts. Even when I was 13, we were performing a couple of times a month at some bowling alley.

The situation was therefore quite new: for the first time I couldn’t tell whether we would ever play again. At some point I used music again as what it had been for me as a teenager – as an outlet to somehow process what we were all suffering from. I reconsidered my position and finally said, ‚Come on, we can’t hang our heads like this.‘ We need our old attitude back:

For now, let’s be the light and just celebrate the fact that we live on, that there is hope for the future.

And so we started writing songs that remind us of who we really are and what we are capable of. From then on, that was our way!

Back with full force!

The first single „Back From The Dead“ rocks like hell and bangs directly with powerful slaps in your face. It seems as if HALESTORM let out the pent-up energy explosively. No trace of melancholy! There is no more impressive way to announce your return to the world stage. The song with its powerful expressive emotions will put you in ecstasy. This leaves no one cold! Especially not when the electrifying guitar solo puts you under power.

Hit in the bulls eye

One thing HALESTORM can not reproach on the new album in any case: Restraint! The songs are rock anthems that shake your Rock soul. That shreds without end! There is one killer song after the next! The songs seem to want to outdo each other. Sometimes it’s more modern, sometimes more melodic, sometimes harder and sometimes faster…. or all together.

However, HALESTORM allows a lull in the middle of the album with the classic gentle ballad „Terrible Things“ and this one internalizes a certain melancholy note. This is an enchanting oasis of contemplation and delicate emotionality in the context of all the banging songs. A beautiful unobtrusive song.

The ballad „Raise Your Horns“ is a really special one and let a lot of impression on me, because Lzzy Hale puts the full scoop of strong emotion into her voice here, even though the song is kept quiet. A song that offers a perfect conclusion of this album with its special charisma. Goosebumps!

Apart from that, you can listen in somewhere on the remaining nine songs and be struck by incredible power and coolness. The whole band rocks their souls out. You will hear and feel that! The song „The Steeple“ is no exception!

Conclusion

HALESTORM ignite a red hot rock fire with „Back From The Dead“. The album is teeming with fire accelerants, which make the flames rise higher and higher and finally make the rocker’s heart explode with enthusiasm in view of the hit density. At the same time, Lzzy Hale comes across as aggressive as an angry lion. Beware of this album, because it will grab you. Watch out! It´s biting!
