KREATOR-„Hate Über Alles“ Review

Thrash Metal

Vor kurzem war die Premiere des Dokumentarfilms „Total Thrash“ (Link) im altehrwürdigen Traditionskino „Lichtburg“ in Essen. Der Film arbeitet die Geschichte des deutschen Thrash Metals ein einer beeindruckenden und interessanten Zeitreise auf. Auch KREATOR (Facebook / Homepage) gehören selbstverständlich zu den Pionieren dieser Musik, waren visionäre Wegbereiter und prägen seit 40 Jahren die Thrash-Metal-Welt, sowohl national als auch international.

Nun ist es am 10.06.’22 soweit und das Album „Hate Über Alles“ wird zum furiosen Thrash-Metal-Angriff starten. Wenn man 40 Jahre lang Musik macht, dann hat man folgendes Problem. Man läuft Gefahr sich zu wiederholen und sich selbst zu kopieren. Also ist Entwicklung gefragt. Je nachdem wie diese ausfällt, gefällt es den Fans erster Stunde dann plötzlich nicht mehr. Es ist also eine Gratwanderung. Aber hey… man kann es sowieso niemals jedem recht machen und schon gar nicht, wenn man eine so bekannte Band wie KREATOR ist. Irgendeiner hat immer was zu kacken. Auf dem Album

„Hate Über Alles“

weht ein frischer Wind, der neue Töne mit sich bringt. Muss man nun befürchten, dass KREATOR irgendwelche wahnwitzigen Experimente wagen? Nein, muss man nicht! Es steckt nach wie vor 100% KREATOR in den Songs! Hören wir also mal rein und verschaffen uns einen Eindruck.

„Der Mensch ist dem Menschen ein Wolf“

Der Satz stammt vom Philosphen Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679). Vor langer Zeit hatte man diese Erkenntnis erlangt und die Menschen tun seitdem viel mehr dafür diese zu bestätigen als zu widerlegen.

Mille Petrozza zum Thema des Albums:

„Hate Über Alles“ spiegelt die Zeit wider, in der wir leben. Alles ist sehr laut und aggressiv. Die Art, wie wir kommunizieren, hat sich dank der sozialen Medien verändert. Das verursacht eine Menge Ungleichgewicht. Die Welt befindet sich in einem Zustand des Verfalls. Das Leben ist im Moment nicht harmonisch, sondern disharmonisch… darauf wollte ich mit dem Titel hinaus.“

Bevor es dann auch mit dem Titelsong „Hate Über Alles“ losgeht, wird das Album erst einmal mit mit cooler Westernromantik eingeleitet. Damit hätte ich nun wirklich nicht bei KREATOR gerechnet und somit startet das Album direkt mit einem überraschenden Intro.

Nun geht es aber mit mit Tempo

in die Vollen

mit dem Titelsong „Hate Über Alles“. Der Song wirkt schön griffig und hat auch seine melodischen Leads, die in einem wilden Solotornado enden. Dabei sind die Vocal Lines vor allem im Chorus super eingängig und eignen sich hervorragend zum mitgrölen. Ein Titel, der wohl als Hommage an die Dead Kennedys und deren satirisch angehauchte, antifaschistische Hymne „California über alles“ gedacht sein soll. Die Botschaft kommt jedenfalls rüber!

KREATOR gehen dabei wie gewohnt mit brachialer Energie zu Werke; eben genauso wie man es von ihnen gewohnt ist und wofür man sie liebt. Von Alterserscheinungen überhaupt keine Spur. Im übrigen ist es das erste Album, welches mit Basser Frédéric Leclercq eingespielt wurde.

Mille Petrozza sagt etwas über den Hintergrund dieses Songs:

„Die Leute schreien sich nur noch an und gehen sich direkt an die Gurgel. So wird Hass zum Druckmittel: ‚Wenn ihr nicht macht, was wir sagen, wählen wir AFD‘. Die Politik lässt sich dadurch unter Druck setzen, womit sie diese Bewegungen nur stärker macht.

Für den aktuellen Sound ist übrigens auch Neuzugang Frédéric verantwortlich, wie Mille erklärt:

Frédéric hat viel beigetragen, vor allem in Bezug auf die Arrangements. Wir haben sogar den Song namens „Dying Planet“ zusammen geschrieben, der der letzte Song auf dem Album und einer meiner Lieblingssongs ist. Ich denke, dass aus der Zusammenarbeit zwischen ihm und mir noch so viel mehr entstehen wird – man muss nur abwarten und sehen! Er ist eine frische Brise… jemand, der sehr talentiert und musikalisch ist.

„Dying Planet“ ist der düsterste Track auf dem Album und stampft bedrohlich vor sich hinn. Mit unheimlichen finsteren Riffs wird der Zustand unseres sterbenden Planeten.

Altbewährtes und Modernes

Mit „Killer Of Jesus“ brettern KREATOR mit einer hammerharten Keule weiter auf der Überholspur. Erst mit „Crash The Tyrants“ wechselt man in den dynamisch stampfenden Mid-Tempo-Sektor. Wuchtige imposante Drums leiten den Song kraftvoll ein und das Ding hat gehörig Power. Ich persönlich habe beim Hören der Songs empfunden, dass KREATOR in ihren Songs noch mehr Heavy Metal Power entflammt haben.

Das ist mir auch besonders beim Song „Strongest Of The Strong“ zieht das Tempo wieder an, legt aber anstatt auf Geschwindigkeit mehr Wert auf Melodik und mitreißenden Powerchören. Die flippigen kreischenden Gitarrensolos sind immer mit am Start und animieren jedes Mal aufs Neue dazu die Luftgitarre zu bedienen und zu den Riffs den Nacken zu trainieren.

Mille hat auch zum Thema Genre-Grenzen ein klares Statement:

„Musikalisch wollte ich ein bisschen greifbarer und kompakter werden. Wir wollten eingängige Songs schreiben, die die Leute live feiern können. Im Thrash oder generell im Metal sind vermeintliche Genre-Regeln bisweilen wichtiger als die Qualität der Songs. Mir persönlich ist das Genre im Grunde aber egal, es gibt nur gute und schlechte Songs.

Diese Herangehensweise spürt man bei den Songs durch und durch. „Become Immortal“ mit seinen Ohhhoohhhh-Chören gehört jedenfalls auch dazu. Somit ist auf dem neuen Album genügend Stoff für wunderbare Live – Kracher, bei denen man wunderbar gesanglich mit einsteigen kann. „Conquer And Destroy“ überrascht nach hartem Vollgasstart und einem wilden Gitarrensolo in der zweiten Hälfte mit einer hohen Gesangsstimme, die vom Gastmusiker DRANGSAL beigesteuert wird. Ein nettes Gimmick, mit dem man nicht rechnet, aber dann doch wieder stimmig ist und sich gut einfügt. Bleibt halt wieder im Kopf hängen. Somit ist man schon mal eingestimmt auf

die Überraschung des Albums.

Kommen wir zum experimentellsten Song auf dem Album, und zwar „Midnight Sun“. Sehr modern ausgerichtet spielt er mit weiblichem Gesang, für den hier Sofia Portanet verantwortlich ist. Es entsteht ein schöner Kontrast, denn rein instrumental wird mit mörderschnellen Riffs und Leads knallhart reingehauen. Der Song zeichnet sich demnach durch seine besondere Ausstrahlung und Atmosphäre aus. Durch diese Besonderheit brennt sich der Song sofort ganz tief ein. KREATOR sind mutig und das wird belohnt. Es hört sich megageil an!

Mille Petrozza zu diesem Prunkstück:

„Midnight Sun“ ist etwas ganz Neues für uns, unsere erste Zusammenarbeit mit einer weiblichen Künstlerin. Als ich den Song schrieb, konnte ich diese Oracle-artige Stimme über dem Pre-Chorus und dem Refrain hören und ich wandte mich sofort an meine talentierte Freundin Sofia Portanet, eine aufstrebende Künstlerin hier in Deutschland. Sofia fügte genau das hinzu, wonach ich gesucht hatte, und verleiht dem Song eine wirklich dunkle, ätherische Stimmung.

Das Video ist die zweite Produktion, die wir mit Tom Schlagkamp und seinem Team gedreht haben. Das Konzept entstand aus dem Text des Songs, den ich mir während eines rituellen Opfers vorstellte. Regisseur Tom kam mit einer Idee zurück, die lose auf Ari Asters ‚Midsommar‘ basiert und die kraftvolle Visuals hat, perfekt für ein Killer-Metal-Musikvideo!“

Fazit

KREATOR bestätigen weiterhin ihre Größe im Metal. folgendes. Sie sind noch lange nicht abgekühlt und schmieden immer noch heiße Eisen im Feuer. Und sie schaffen es ihrem Sound mit einer Frische zu versehen, die knackig scharfe Songs entstehen lassen, die sich wunderbar einprägen. Zudem vollzieht man das Kunststück moderne atmosphärische Elemente einzubauen ohne an Authentizität zu verlieren. Und deshalb schätze ich besonders, dass die Songs so unterschiedlich erklingen, einen individuellen Charakter haben und somit nicht beliebig austauschbar sind. Jeder wird beispielsweise „Midnight Sun“ oder „Hate Über Alles“ sofort erkennen, wenn er ihn hört. Somit ist das Album ein verdammter Killer!

English review

Thrash Metal

Recently was the premiere of the documentary „Total Thrash“ in the venerable traditional cinema „Lichtburg“ in Essen. The film works up the history of German Thrash Metal an impressive and interesting time travel. Also KREATOR (Facebook / Homepage) are of course among the pioneers of this music, were visionary trailblazers and have shaped the thrash metal world for 40 years, both nationally and internationally.

Now on 10.06.’22 the album „Hate Über Alles“ will start to the furious thrash metal attack. If you make music for 40 years, then you have the following problem. You run the risk of repeating yourself and copying yourself. So development is needed. Depending on how this turns out, some old school fans of the suddenly don’t like it anymore. So it’s a tightrope walk. But hey… you can never please everybody anyway and especially not if you are such a well-known band like KREATOR. Somebody always has something to crap about. On the new album

„Hate Über Alles“

blows a fresh wind, which brings new sounds. Must one now fear that KREATOR dare some insane experiments? No, you do not have to! There is still 100% KREATOR in the songs! So let’s listen in and get an impression.

Mille Petrozza says about the theme of the album:

Everything is really loud and aggressive. The way we communicate has changed, thanks to social media. It causes a lot of imbalance. The world is in a state of disrepair. Life is not harmonic right now, it’s disharmonic… that’s where I was going with the title.

But first the album is introduced with cool Western romanticism. I really didn’t expect that from KREATOR and so the album starts directly with a surprising intro.

After that it goes

straight forward

with the title track „Hate Über Alles“. The song has a nice grip and also has its melodic leads that end in a wild solo tornado. At the same time, the vocal lines are super catchy, especially in the chorus, and are great for bawling along. A title that is probably intended as a tribute to the Dead Kennedys and their satirical, anti-fascist anthem „California Über Alles“. The message comes across in any case!

KREATOR go to work as usual with brute energy; just as you are used to from them and what you love them for. No signs of age at all. Incidentally, this is the first album that was recorded with bassist Frédéric Leclercq.

By the way, newcomer Frédéric is also responsible for the current sound, as Mille explains:

Frédéric brought a lot to the table, especially in terms of arrangements. We even co-wrote a song together called «Dying Planet», which is the last song on the album and one of my favourite tracks. I think there is so much more to come from him and me collaborating – just you wait and see! He’s a fresh breath of air…someone who is very talented and musical.

„Dying Planet“ is the darkest track on the album and stomps ominously. With the eerie sinister riffs it fits perfectly the state of our dying planet.

Old and modern

With the merciless „Killer Of Jesus“ KREATOR continue to run on the fast lane. Only with „Crash The Tyrants“ they change into the dynamic stomping mid-tempo sector. Massive imposing drums introduce the song powerfully and the song has a lot of punch in general. Personally, I felt while listening to the songs that KREATOR have ignited even more heavy metal power in their songs.

This strikes me also particularly with the song „Strongest Of The Strong“ which pulls the tempo again, but instead of high speed more emphasis on melody and rousing power choruses are given. The wild screeching guitar solos are always shining through and animate every time to play the air guitar.

Mille also has a clear statement on the subject of genre boundaries:

Musically, I wanted to become a bit more gripping and compact. We wanted to write catchy songs that people can celebrate live. In Thrash or in Metal in general, supposed genre rules are sometimes more important than the quality of the songs. But I personally don’t care about the genre, there are only good and bad songs.

You can feel this approach in the songs through and through. „Become Immortal“ with its Ohhhoohhhh choirs belongs to the catchy ones in any case. Thus, there is enough material on the new album for wonderful live – thrillers, where you can join in wonderfully vocally. „Conquer And Destroy“ surprises after a hard full throttle start and a wild guitar solo in the second half with a high voice contributed by guest musician DRANGSAL. A nice gimmick, with which one does not expect, but then again is coherent and fits in well. Sticks again in the head. Thus one is already tuned to

the big surprise of the album.

Let’s get to the most experimental song on the album, and that is „Midnight Sun„. Very modern oriented, it plays with female vocals, for which Sofia Portanet is responsible here. It creates a nice contrast, because purely instrumental is hit hard with killer fast riffs and leads. The song is therefore characterized by its special charisma and atmosphere. Therefore this song burns itself immediately very deep in your head. KREATOR are brave and this is rewarded. It sounds mega cool!

„Midnight Sun“ is something a little new for us, our first time collaborating with a female artist. When I was writing the song, I could hear this Oracle type voice over the pre-chorus and chorus and I immediately reached out to my talented friend, Sofia Portanet who is an emerging artist, here in Germany. Sofia added exactly what I was looking for and gives the song a really dark, ethereal vibe.

The video is the second production we shot with Tom Schlagkamp and his team. The concept was drawn up from the song’s lyrics which I envisaged to take place during a ritual sacrifice. Director Tom came back with an idea loosely based on Ari Aster’s ‘Midsommar’ which has powerful visuals, perfect for a killer metal music video!

Conclusion

KREATOR prove their great role in Metal. They are far from cooled down and still forge hot irons in the fire. And they manage to provide their sound with a freshness that creates crisp sharp and catchy songs. In addition, they accomplish the feat of incorporating modern atmospheric elements without losing authenticity. And what I especially appreciate is the fact that the songs sound so different, have an individual character and thus are not arbitrarily interchangeable. Everyone will recognize for example „Midnight Sun“ or „Hate Über Alles“ immediately when he hears them. Thus, the album has become a damn killer.
