THE UNSLAIN-„Descending“ Review

Als modernen Old-School-Metal

bezeichnet die niederländische Band THE UNSLAIN ihren Sound. Sie haben nun ihr zweites Album „Descending“ veröffentlicht. Der Sound der Band orientiert sich an klassischen Metalstrukturen und es finden sich Einflüsse von Bands wie Metallica, Iron Maiden oder auch Trivium und Bullet For My Valentine.

Mit diesem sehr ansprechenden Mix gewannen sie 2019 den Publikumspreis beim niederländischen Wacken-Metal-Battle-Contest. Und das nicht ohne Grund. THE UNSLAIN spielen nicht um den heißen Brei, sondern kommen geradlinig zur Sache, wobei die klassischen unsterblichen Riffs einfach immer funktionieren. Der rohe druckvolle Sound pumpt das Blut durch die Metalarterien. Die etwas längeren Spielzeiten der Songs werden gekonnt unterhaltsam mit einem dynamischen belebenden Konzept befüllt.

Die Rockröhre von Sänger/Gitarrist Jeroen Hermsen könnte nicht besser zu dem markanten Sound passen. Beim Song „(In) Hell I Am“ hat man mit Gastsängerin Tracy Tchai ebenfalls die perfekte Wahl getroffen. Sie gibt dem Song noch das gewisse Extra. Sehr positiv fällt auch Lead Gitarrist Bart Foppes auf, der hier mit geilen Leads und fantastischen Solos den Hörgenuß intensiviert.

Moderne Ansätze

zeigen sich mal mehr und mal weniger bei den Songs. So Songs wie „Eroded“ dürften wohl in die Kategorie moderner Metal fallen. Das Zusammenspiel zwischen extremen und cleanen Vocals wird hier wirklich gut umgesetzt, wobei der düstere aggressive Song eine ganz eigenwillige Ader hat und durch eine ganz spezielle Atmosphäre besticht. Auch deshalb für mich einer der herausragenden Songs auf dem Album.

Demgegenüber stehen so Songs wie „Long Road Out Of Hell“ mit einer eher rockigen Attitüde, die einen flotten aufregenden Ritt hinlegen. Sehr gut gefällt mir der stets deutlich wahrnehmbare Bass, der für fette Schwingungen sorgt.

„Within“ ist ein wahnsinnig lebendiger Song, der von vielen Dingen lebt. Zum einen hat er einen geilen Groove zu bieten. Aber das ist nicht alles. Die elektrisierenden Leads machen echt Laune. Und wenn der Dampfhammer kreist, dann brennt der Moshpit mit einem feurigen Gitarrensolo inklusive.

Mit „Let me Stay“ schleicht sich sogar eine Ballade ein, die zwar nicht wirklich was innovatives offeriert, aber sich dennoch fein ins Gehört schmeichelt. Nach der ersten Hälfte legt man ne ordentliche Schüppe an Power drauf, bevor es dann doch zu geschmeidig wird.

Von massiv rockig bis hammerhart

Auch wenn sich THE UNSLAIN an dem guten alten Metal orientieren, so offenbaren sich schon hier und da die versprochenen modernen Ansätze. Man nehme z.B. „Quintessence“. Dort hat man sehr viel reingepackt. Nicht nur die Vocals gestalten sich sehr wechselhaft. Auch der Sound ist hier sehr divers gehalten und reicht von massiv rockig bis hin zu hammerharten Eskalationen, die einen wie ein Sturm mitreißen.

Fazit

THE UNSLAIN können mit ihrem Album „Descending“ auf jeden Fall punkten. Der Sound hat mächtig Rumms und bietet auch für den Moshpit echtes Potential. THE UNSLAIN begeistern nicht nur mit bretthartem Metal, sondern auch mit einer mitreißenden rockigen Ader. Dazu gesellen sich teilweise moderne Ansätze im Songwriting, so dass das Album einen hohen Unterhaltungswert besitzt. Und live dürfte das Ganze fantastisch funktionieren.

As modern old-school-metal

is how the Dutch band THE UNSLAIN describes their sound. They released their second album „Descending“ on May 19. The sound of the band is based on classic metal structures and you can find influences of bands like Metallica, Iron Maiden or even Trivium and Bullet For My Valentine.

With this very appealing mix they won the audience award at the Dutch Wacken Metal Battle Contest in 2019. And not without reason. THE UNSLAIN don’t play around the bush, but get straight to the point. And the classic immortal riffs always working. This raw powerful sound pumps the blood through the metal arteries. The somewhat longer playing times of the songs are skillfully filled entertainingly with a dynamic invigorating concept.

The rock voice of singer/guitarist Jeroen Hermsen couldn’t fit better to the striking sound. For the song „(In) Hell I Am“ they also made the perfect choice with guest singer Tracy Tchai. She gives the song that certain extra. Lead guitarist Bart Foppes also stands out very positively, who intensifies the listening pleasure here with awesome leads and fantastic solos.

Modern approaches

show themselves sometimes more and sometimes less in the songs. Songs like „Eroded“ probably fall into the category of modern Metal. The interplay between extreme and clean vocals is really well implemented here, whereby the gloomy aggressive song has a very unique vein and captivates with a very special atmosphere. So this is for me one of the outstanding songs on the album.

On the other hand, there are songs like „Long Road Out Of Hell“ with a rather rocky attitude, which provide a brisk exciting ride. I like very much the always clearly perceptible bass, which provides fat vibes.

„Within“ is an insanely lively song. On the one hand, it has an awesome groove to offer. But that’s not all. The electrifying leads are really fun. And when the hammer circles, the mosh pit burns with a fiery guitar solo included.

With „Let me Stay“ even a ballad sneaks in, which does not really offer anything innovative, but nevertheless ingratiates itself finely into the ear. After the first half, the band adds a decent amount of power, before it becomes too soft.

A rousing sound

Even if THE UNSLAIN orientate themselves on the good old Metal, the promised modern approaches reveal themselves here and there. Take for example „Quintessence“. There they have packed very much in. Not only the vocals are very changeable. Also the sound is kept here very diverse and ranges from massive rock to hammer-hard escalations that blow you away like a storm.

Conclusion

THE UNSLAIN can definitely score with their album „Descending“. They have a lot of power and the songs also offer real potential for the mosh pit. THE UNSLAIN inspire not only with hard metal, but also with a rousing rock vein. In addition, join partly modern approaches in songwriting, so that the album has a high entertainment value. And live the whole thing should work fantastically.
