RHAPSODY OF FIRE – „Glory For Salvation“ Review

Symphonic Power Metal

Nun schicken RHAPSODY OF FIRE (Facebook) ihr nächstes Album „Glory For Salvation“ ins Rennen. Es soll der zweite Teil einer Trilogie sein, welche mit dem Album „The Eighth Mountain“ begann. Am 26.11.2021 ist es nun soweit. RHAPSODY OF FIRE aus Italien sind quasi Mitbegründer des symphonischen theatralischen Power Metals und haben eine beachtliche Karriere hingelegt. Aus der ursprünglichen Band, welche 1993 unter dem Namen RHAPSODY gegründet wurde, sind irgendwann zwei Bands (die andere heißt Luca Turilli’s Rhapsody) entstanden. Aufgrund rechtlicher Namensgeschichten musste die Band später ihren Namen in RHAPSODY OF FIRE ändern.

Die theatralische Epik

hat man jedenfalls nicht verloren und so bekommen die Fans das, was sie erwarten. Das wird einem direkt mit den orchestralen Synthies beim Opener „Son Of Vengeance“ klargemacht. Hochmelodisch geht es weiter und dann folgen die obligatorisch hymnenhaften Gesänge. Giacomo Voli ist ja später erst als neuer Sänger verpflichtet worden und das Album „The Eighth Mountain“ war das erste mit ihm am Mikro. Giacomo Volis Qualitäten als Sänger sind natürlich einwandfrei und passen hervorragend zum Sound von RHAPSODY OF FIRE.

Während der erste Song so ein wenig an mir vorüberzieht ohne Eindruck zu hinterlassen, macht der zweite Song „The Kingdom Of Ice“ schon mehr Eindruck. Hier kommen die Männer in die Puschen und geben mal Zunder. Und auch der Song „Glory For Salvation“ hält nicht hinterm Berg, sondern besticht durch munteres Auftreten. Gut gefallen haben mir die in diesem Fall auch die choralen Gesänge, die in diesem Song cool eingesetzt werden und ihm eine schöne Erhabenheit verleihen.

Ecken und Kanten

fehlen mir auf diesem Album. Im Großen und Ganzen ist mir das alles zu harmlos und auf Nummer sicher getrimmt. Beim Sound des Albums stehen der Gesang und die Synthies im Vordergrund. Die Gitarrenriffs sind mir leider zu dezent in den Hintergrund geraten. Lediglich die Solos stechen mal dominanter hervor. Zwar sind Ansätze sind vorhanden, wo z.B. Giacomo mal andere Facetten zeigt, aber diese verpuffen dann wieder in dem Übermaß an engelsgleichen Gesängen und Chören.

Als Beispiel sei hier der epische Song „Abyss Of Pain“ genannt, welcher das längste Kapitel auf dem Album mit einer Spielzeit von über 10 Minuten repräsentiert. Denn hier zeigt Giacomo endlich mal, dass er nicht nur einwandfrei melodisch singen, sondern auch mal etwas dreckiger aggressiver klingen kann. Dieses Stilmittel hätte man intensiver einsetzen sollen, aber auch hier bleibt es beim Ansatz ohne es weiter zu verfolgen.

Stattdessen holt man noch ein wenig Folk mit dem fröhlichen Song „Terial The Hawk“ hervor, der sich genauso unauffällig in das Albumkonzept einfügt wie die drei Balladen „Magic Signs“, „Un’Ode Per L’Eroe“ und „La Esencia De Un Rey“, wobei die letztgenannten durch die italienische Sprache noch einen speziellen Touch bekommen.

Fazit

„Glory For Salvation“ ist ein auf Hochglanz poliertes Album. Allerdings fehlen mir einige dunkle Momente, sozusagen das Salz in der Suppe. Die Gitarren sind mir viel zu wenig präsent. Es ist eben ein rundes Album ohne Ecken und Kanten, wobei die Band durchweg mit hymnenhaften Songs und stolz geschwellter Brust auf prachtvollen italienischen Hengsten durch die Fantasylandschaft reitet. Es werden harmonischen Kompositionen geboten, welche formidabel und absolut sauber vom Sänger Giacomo Voli vorgetragen werden. Schmutzig machen tut man sich dabei nicht und Blut fließt erst recht nicht. So ist mir das Album insgesamt einfach zu harmlos geworden. Wer auf friedlichen melodischen Hymnen Metal steht, der darf hier bedenkenlos zugreifen.

P.S.

Vielleicht hat sich auch mein Musikgeschmack verändert, aber nachdem ich mir die alten Alben nochmals angehört habe, habe ich das Gefühl, dass die alten Songs noch origineller waren und mehr Biss hatten. Aktuell überzeugen mich daher andere italienische Bands im Bereich Symphonic Power Metal. Da wären z.B. SIGNUM DRACONIS mit ihrem monumentalen Album „The Divine Comedy: Inferno“ (Review) oder IMAGO IMPERII mit ihrem Album „A Tale Of Darkness And Hope“ (Review).

Symphonic Power Metal

RHAPSODY OF FIRE (Facebook) release their new album „Glory For Salvation“ next Friday on November 26. It is supposed to be the second part of a trilogy, which began with the album „The Eighth Mountain“. RHAPSODY OF FIRE from Italy are co-founders of symphonic theatrical Power Metal and have had a remarkable career. In the year 2011 the original band, which was founded in 1993 under the name RHAPSODY, was divided into two bands (the other one is called Luca Turilli’s Rhapsody).

The theatrical epic

has not been lost and so the fans get what they expect. This is made clear directly with the orchestral synths on „Son Of Vengeance“. Highly melodic it goes on and then the obligatory hymn-like vocals follow. Giacomo Voli has been signed 2016 as a new singer. His qualities as a singer are of course impeccable and fit perfectly to the sound of RHAPSODY OF FIRE.

While the first song passes me by a bit unspectacular, the second song „The Kingdom Of Ice“ leaves more of an impression. This is where the men perk up a bit. And also the song „Glory For Salvation“ doesn’t keep behind the mountain, but impresses with a lively appearance. I also liked the choral vocals in this case, which are used cool in the song and give it a nice sublimity.

Only heaven, no hell

On the whole, it’s too harmless for me. The vocals and the synths are in the foreground. The guitar riffs are discreet, only the solos stand out sometimes more dominant. Although approaches are present, where Giacomo shows other facets, but these then fizzle out in the excess of angelic chants and choirs.

For example, the epic song „Abyss Of Pain“, which represents the longest chapter on the album with a playing time of over 10 minutes. Because here Giacomo shows that he can not only sing flawlessly melodic, but also sometimes sound a little dirtier aggressive. This stylistic device should have been used more intensively, but here too it remains with the approach without pursuing it further.

Instead, they bring out some folk with the cheerful song „Terial The Hawk“, which fits into the album concept just as unobtrusively as the three ballads „Magic Signs“, „Un’Ode Per L’Eroe“ and „La Esencia De Un Rey“, whereby the latter get a special touch through the Italian language.

Conclusion

„Glory For Salvation“ is an album polished to a high sheen. The band consistently rides through the fantasy landscape with anthemic songs and proudly swelling chests on magnificent Italian stallions.

Harmonious compositions are offered, which are formidably and absolutely cleanly performed by singer Giacomo Voli. RHAPSODY OF FIRE play a heavenly sound without going through the abyss or darker places. Thus, the album has simply become too harmless for me. Who likes peaceful melodic hymns of Metal, which may access here without hesitation.

Maybe my musical taste has changed over the time, but after listening to the old albums again, I have the feeling that the old songs were even more original and had more bite. Currently, other Italian bands in the field of Symphonic Power Metal convince me. For example SIGNUM DRACONIS with their monumental album „The Divine Comedy: Inferno“ (Review) or IMAGO IMPERII with their album „A Tale Of Darkness And Hope“(Review).
