[English version below!] Wacken-Tatort: The Halo Effect im exklusiven Interview! Die bevorstehende Jubiläumsfolge des Borowski-Tatorts spielt auf dem Wacken Open Air kurz vor Festivalbeginn. In dieser speziellen Episode namens „Borowski und das unschuldige Kind von Wacken“ werden die Ereignisse auf dem Gelände des Musikfestivals thematisiert. Die ARD wird diese Folge am Sonntag, dem 26. November 2023, um 20:15 Uhr ausstrahlen. Mit dem Auftritt von The Halo Effect endet die Folge. Gitarrist Niclas Engelin im exklusiven Interview.

MH: Lass uns ein wenig über die Krimireihe „Tatort“ sprechen. Ich denke, es ist die beliebteste Fernsehsendung in Deutschland. Es wird eine Episode geben, die auf dem Wacken Open Air spielt. Und Ihr spielt mit! Die Ausstrahlung erfolgt am Sonntagabend.

Niclas: Wow.

MH: Ich denke, es werden mehr als 20 Millionen Menschen zuschauen.

Niclas: Das ist beeindruckend.

MH: In der letzten Szene der ganzen Geschichte sieht sich der Kommissar eine Live-Show einer der Bands in Wacken an – und es ist The Halo Effect! Der Film endet also mit Eurem Song „Days Of The Lost“.

Niclas: Das ist wirklich cool. Toll.

MH: Hast Du Infos darüber, wie das alles zusammengekommen ist? War das Zufall oder war das geplant? Wie habt Ihr einen Auftritt in der beliebteste Krimiserie Deutschlands geschafft?

Niclas: Ich habe sie gerade angerufen und gefragt. (lacht) Nein. Natürlich nicht. Ich denke, da gibt es viele Verbindungen. Einige Monate vor diesem freien Auftritt erhielten wir einen Anruf von unserem Verlag Sony/ATV. Sie fragten uns, ob wir dazu bereit wären, und natürlich waren wir bereit. Das ist einfach unglaublich. Vielen Dank, Sony/ATV und die gesamte Organisation hinter The Halo Effect.

The Halo Effect kannten die Tatort-Krimi-Reihe vorher noch nicht

MH: Ich glaube, Ihr hattet zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch nichts von dieser Krimiserie gehört, oder?

Niclas: Nein. Nichts. Dann erklärte Niclas von Sony/ATV ein wenig, worum es ging. Wir haben hier in Schweden etwas Ähnliches namens „Efterlyst“. Dadurch haben wir verstanden, was es war. Und es hat so ein großes Publikum! Soweit wir wissen, handelt es sich um eine fortlaufende Serie seit den 70er Jahren.

MH: Ja, genau.

Niclas: Ein Klassiker, bei dem sich die Leute verabreden und sagen: „Ja, am Sonntag schauen wir uns den Tatort an.“ Es ist etwas, was man halt so macht. Es ist wirklich, wirklich gut gemacht.

MH: Ja, tatsächlich. Deshalb verbieten einige Leute in meinem Freundeskreis das Anrufen am Sonntagabend. Jeder schaut es sich an. Man geht davon aus, dass mehr als 20 Millionen Menschen es sehen werden. Das ist wirklich sehr, sehr beliebt und es funktioniert so, dass es in jeder größeren Stadt andere Ermittelnde gibt. Der Schauspieler, der in der Wacken-Folge den Kommissar spielt, Axel Milberg, feiert sein 20. Jubliäum. Er ist der Typ, der euch drei letztes Jahr in Wacken interviewt hat. Er ist ziemlich beliebt. – Und du? Liest oder schaust Du Krimi-Serien?

Niclas: Das tue ich… Wie ich dir bereits erzählt habe, ist „Efterlyst“ ein Klassiker hier in Schweden und ich habe ihn immer geschaut. Dann gibt es noch die ganzen Krimiserien auf Netflix und HBO und so weiter. Natürlich ist es sehr interessant. Es ist sehr gut gemacht, all dieses Zeug, diese ganze Serie. Ich finde es wirklich sehr, sehr cool und inspirierend, dass es diese Tatort-Reihe schon seit den 70er-Jahren gibt. Es fesselt immer noch sein Publikum. Die Leute wollen es Woche für Woche sehen. Das ist erstaunlich, wenn man darüber nachdenkt.

The Halo Effect: Neue Single „The Defiant One“ fast zeitgleich veröffentlicht

MH: Man könnte sagen, es sind die Rolling Stones unter den Krimiserien. – Ich habe gerade Eure neue Single „The Defiant One“ gesehen. Das Video ist eine Live-Show von The Halo Effect. War das auch auf Wacken 2022?

Niclas: Nein, das war ein Auftritt in meiner Heimatstadt im Februar dieses Jahres. Eine ausverkaufte Show. Es war ein guter Abend. Es ist aus einem kompletten Auftritt. Wir haben eine Stunde und zehn Minuten gespielt, so etwas in der Art, und wir haben das Ganze gefilmt. [Und gedacht:] Vielleicht versuchen wir es… Wir bringen es heraus, damit jeder es sehen und sehen kann, wie es bei unserer ersten Show in Göteborg war.

MH: Ist es ein Zufall, dass eine neue Single und ein Video eines Live-Shootings ziemlich genau in derselben Woche veröffentlicht werden wie die Tatort-Krimireihe?

Niclas: Vielleicht ist es das, oder vielleicht ist es ein… Ich denke, es ist ein gut durchdachter Plan. Wie alles bei all dem Zeug. Es ist einfach großartig, Teil des Tatorts sein zu können. Es ist nicht etwas, bei dem man einfach ein Brainstorming durchführt und sich dann etwas ausdenkt. Es braucht Zeit, den Plan vorzulegen und herauszufinden, wie er funktionieren soll. Es ist Teil eines größeren Plans.

MH: Ich denke, der Plan war ein guter Plan, denn 2022 lief das Wacken Open Air ganz gut. Dieses Jahr hatten sie dort große Probleme mit dem Wetter. Es hätte keine Möglichkeit gegeben, Videoaufnahmen zu machen oder die Dreharbeiten für einen Film zu machen. Jetzt ist es eine gute Gelegenheit für das Wacken Festival, es für sein Image und seinen Ruf zu nutzen. Ich denke, das ist…

Niclas: Das ist großartig.

The Halo Effect werden mit dem Wacken-Tatort viele neue Menschen erreichen

MH: Welchen Einfluss wird der Tatort-Film Deiner Meinung nach auf Eure Popularität haben, auf die Popularität von „The Halo Effect“? Zwanzig Millionen Menschen schauen es sich an. Natürlich sind das nicht alles Metalheads.

Niclas: Natürlich hoffen wir alle, dass daraus etwas wird. Dass wir natürlich ein Publikum erreichen können, das wir normalerweise in diesem Musikgenre nicht erreichen. Ich hoffe, wir können ein paar neue Fans gewinnen, ein paar neue Unterstützer, oder die Leute dazu bringen, sich zu fragen: „Wow, wer ist diese Band? Ich recherchiere das mal!“. Das wäre stark!

MH: Die letzte Szene ist Eure Live-Show, die Band, die Bühne und alles. Dann ist der Kommissar auch Teil der Menge und schaut sich begeistert die Show an. Und dann wird ausgeblendet zum Abspann, der als erstes „The Halo Effect, Days Of The Lost“ zeigt. Ich denke, die Leute werden das im Hinterkopf behalten. Und vielleicht besuchen sie im März Eure nächsten Shows in Deutschland, wenn Ihr Meshuggah supportet. Was meinst du? Werden die Leute dann eher wegen Euch als wegen Meshuggah kommen?

Niclas: Es ist eine Tour. Es ist Musik für alle. Wir konkurrieren nicht. Es geht einfach darum, eine gute Zeit zu haben, vor Leuten spielen zu können und eine tolle Zeit mit Meshuggah und Monta zu haben. Darum geht es, und darum, das Gospel of Göteborg zu verbreiten, den Melodic Death Metal.

The Halo Effect guest starring in German crime series „Tatort“: Guitarist Niclas Engelin in an exclusive interview

The upcoming anniversary episode of the German crime series takes „Tatort“ takes place at the Wacken Open Air shortly before the festival begins. This special episode called “Borowski and the Innocent Child of Wacken” focuses on the events on the music festival grounds. German ARD will broadcast this episode on Sunday, November 26, 2023. The episode ends with the appearance of The Halo Effect. Guitarist Niclas Engelin in an exclusive interview.

MH: Let’s talk a little about the crime series “Tatort”. I think, it is the most popular television program in Germany. There will be an episode set at Wacken Open Air. And you play along! It will be broadcasted on Sunday evening.

Niclas: Wow.

MH: I think there will be more than 20 million people watching it.

Niclas: That is amazing.

MH: The final scene in the whole story is the detective watching a live show of one of the bands at Wacken, and it’s The Halo Effect. So, the movie closes with your Song “Days Of The Lost”.

Niclas: That’s really cool. Amazing.

MH: Do you have any information on how this all came together? Was this coincidental or what was this planned? How did you make your way into Germany’s most popular crime series?

Niclas: I just phoned them up and asked them. *laughing* No. Of course not. I think there are a lot of connections there. We got a phone call from our publisher, Sony/ATV some months before this vacuum gig. They asked us if we were up for doing it, and of course, we were. That’s just amazing. Thank you, Sony/ATV and the whole organization, behind The Halo Effect.

Band members did not know the crime series „Tatort“ before

MH: At that point, I think you hadn’t heard anything before of this crime series, did you?

Niclas: No. Nothing. Then Niclas at Sony/ATV explained a little bit about what it was. We have something similar here in Sweden called “Efterlyst“. Then we understood what it was. And it’s such a wide audience! From what we understood, it’s been an ongoing series since the ’70s.

MH: Yes, it is.

Niclas: A classic one where people are gathering and say: “Yeah, we’re going to see Tatort on Sunday”. It’s something that you do. It’s really, really well made.

MH: Yes indeed. That’s why some people in my circle of friends forbid calling on Sunday evenings. Everyone’s watching it. They presume more than 20 million people watching it, I told you. This is really, really popular, and it works the way that there are different detectives in every larger city. The actor who is the detective in the Wacken episode, Axel Milberg, is going to have his 20th anniversary. He is the guy who interviewed you three at Wacken last year. He’s quite popular. – How about you? Do you read or watch crime novels or series?

Niclas: I do… As I told you about this, “Efterlyst“ is a classic one over here in Sweden, and I used to watch it. Then we have all this crime series going on at Netflix and HBO and so on. Of course, it’s very interesting. It is. It’s very well made, all this stuff, all this series. I think it’s really, really cool and inspirational that this Tatort-series has been going on since the ’70s. It’s still holding its audience. People want to see it week after week. That’s amazing when you think of it.

The Halo Effect: New single „The Defiant One“ released almost at the same time

MH: It’s the Rolling Stones of crime series, you could say. – I just watched your new single “The Defiant One”. The video is a live show of The Halo Effect. Was this shot on Wacken 2022 as well?

Niclas: No, this was a hometown gig in February this year. A sold-out show. It was a good evening. It’s from a full gig. It’s like we are playing one hour and ten minutes, something like that, and we filmed the whole thing. Maybe we will try… We will get it out so everyone can see it and watch how it was on our first show in Gothenburg.

MH: Is it a coincidence that a new single and video of a live shooting is published quite in the same week than the Tatort crime series?

Niclas: Maybe it is or maybe it’s a… I think it’s a well-thought-of plan. As everything with all this stuff, be able to be part of Tatort is just amazing. It’s not something that you just brainstorm and just come up with. It takes time to put out the plan, how it’s going to make it work. It’s part of a bigger plan.

MH: I think the bigger plan was a good plan because in 2022, the Wacken Open Air went quite well. This year, they had very much trouble with the weather. There wouldn’t have been any possibility to do some video shooting or to do the shooting for a movie. Now, I think it’s a good opportunity for the Wacken Festival to use it for its image and reputation. I think that’s…

Niclas: That’s great.

The Halo Effect will reach many new people with the Wacken-Tatort

MH: What do you think will the Tatort movie do to your popularity, to the popularity of The Halo Effect? Twenty million people watching it. Not all metal heads, of course.

Niclas: Of course, we are all hoping that this will lead to something. That we can reach an audience that we normally don’t reach within this genre of music, of course. I hope we can gather some new fans, some new supporters, or get people wondering „Wow, who’s this band?” checking it out at least. That would rule.

MH: The last scene is your live show, the band, and the stage, and everything. Then, the detective is part of the crowd and he is happily watching the show. Then it fades all out to the the end credits showing “The Halo Effect, Days Of The Lost”. I think people will keep this in mind. And maybe they’ll go and see your next shows in Germany in March when you’ll be supporting Meshuggah. What do you think? Will people come for you rather than Meshuggah?

Niclas: It’s a tour. It’s music for everyone. We don’t compete. It’s just having a good time and being able to play in front of people and having a great time with Meshuggah and Monta. That’s what it’s all about, and to spread the Gospel of Gothenburg, melodic death metal.
