ARCH ENEMY – „Deceivers“ Review

ARCH ENEMY (Homepage, Facebook) sind eine Macht im Melodic Death Metal. Seit 1996 gehen sie ihren Weg und der stetig wachsende Erfolg hat gezeigt, dass sie den richtigen Weg gegangen sind. Johan Liiva war der erste Sänger der Band, bis 2001 Angela Gossow übernahm und ebenfalls einen hervorragenden Job machte und so zu einem herausragenden Merkmal der Band wurde. Damals war eine Frau in diesem Genre noch etwas neues, doch Angela fegte zu dieser Zeit jegliche Skepsis einfach weg. Nach langer erfolgreicher Zeit zog sich Angela zurück und übergab Alissa White-Gluz das Mikro, die bis heute in der Band alles in Schutt und Asche growlt.

„Deceivers“ ist nun das elfte Album der Band und heute am 12.08.’22 erschienen. Und wenn so eine altgediente Band ein neues Album herausbringt, dann fragt man sich immer, ob es was neues zu hören gibt oder ob man seine Wohlfühloasen nicht verlässt. Dann hören wir mal….

Starker Beginn mit Überraschungseffekt

Auf ein Intro hat man verzichtet und es einfach in den Opener „Handshake With The Devil“ integriert. Mit geshredderten Gitarrenleads beginnt das Spektakel, bis es zunächst standesgemäß mit fettem Riffing und treibenden Drums vorangeht, wobei Alissa wie gewohnt ihre aggressiven Growls zum Besten gibt. Doch dann hört man erstaunlicherweise cleane meldodische Gesangslinien von ihr. Das gab es auf dem letzten Album beim Song „Reason To Believe“ ebenfalls, doch hier wurde es meiner Meinung nach noch besser umgesetzt. Und dies belebt den Sound meiner Meinung nach auf eine positive Weise. Denn auch diesen Gesangstil beherrscht sie perfekt und klingt toll. Diese fließenden Übergänge der cleanen kraftvollen Stimme in den Growlgesang kommt richtig stark rüber und bringt ein neues Element in den Sound. Gerade auch der mystische Part ab Minute 03:40 gefällt mir außerordentlich gut und daran schließt sich das fetzige Gitarrensolo an. Für mich ist der Opener einer der besten Songs auf dem Album. Eine wunderbare Balance der Elemente.

Ich höre zwar jetzt schon wieder die No-Clean-Vocals-Fraktion aufschreien, aber jetzt mal ehrlich. Gnadenlose Brecher haben uns ARCH ENEMY schon unzählige Male präsentiert. Warum sollte man dann nicht auch mal was neues probieren? Es wird sich keiner Sorgen darum machen müssen, dass ARCH ENEMY jetzt plüschig und kuschelig daherkommen. Denn es geht weiterhin bretthart zur Sache.

Brutal wie eh und jeh

gibt sich dann auch direkt der zweite Track „Deceiver, Deceiver“! Hier ist wieder pure Zerstörung angesagt. Martialische Growls mit drückenden Riffs und galoppierenden Drums bestimmen das extrem finstere Geschehen. Auf ausladende und feinste Gitarrensolos kann man sich ebenfalls wieder freuen. Dieser Song tritt auch mit einem wahnsinnig kraftvollen Chorus auf. Ein sehr mächtiger Arschtritt!

Es tut sich was….

Man merkt ARCH ENEMY an, dass sie sich doch etwas einfallen lassen und sich um ein sehr ausgefeiltes variables Songwriting bemühen. „The Watcher“ gehört für mich ebenfalls zu den Highlights des Albums, weil er wieder unterhaltsame Abwechslung bietet. Es beginnt mit rockig melodischen Riffs, die dann von einer gnadenlosen Speed-Attacke weggeblasen werden. Doch die Melodien vom Beginn tauchen immer wieder im Refrain auf und so entsteht ein Wechselspiel zweier Kräfte. Im weiteren entwickelt der Song sogar beim gigantischen Solo noch epische Züge.

Der fließende Übergang in den nächsten Song „Poisoned Arrow“ ist wunderbar gelöst und offenbart einen symphonischen Beginn, der mich mal wieder (positiv) überrascht. Es folgen cleane atmosphärische Gitarrenklänge, bis der Song kraftvoll losstampft. Der Song haut jetzt nicht so auf die Kacke, sondern entpuppt sich als interessanter melodischer Midtempo-Kracher, den ich so jetzt auch nicht erwartet hätte.

Dramaturgie und Atmosphäre

sind auf diesem Album entstanden wie noch auf keinem anderen Album von ARCH ENEMY. Sie wollen bleiben wie sie sind, aber wollen nicht so klingen wie gewohnt. Daher haben sie versucht neue Elemente und Facetten in den Sound einzubringen. Ich finde, dass ihnen das gut gelungen ist. Allerdings hätte ich mir noch mehr Ansätze mit Alissas stimmlicher Bandbreite gewünscht. Ich denke, dass da noch viel machbar wäre ohne den Sound im Grundsatz zu verändern. Der Opener „Handshake With The Devil“ zeigt eindrucksvoll wie es geht. Und so lange es derart harte Brecher wie beispielsweise „Deceiver, Deceiver“ oder „The Watcher“ gibt, ist die Welt doch völlig in Ordnung. Leider nimmt die Qualität der Songs zum Ende hin ein wenig ab. Die letzten zwei Tracks kommen nicht so spektakulär daher und hauen mich nicht so vom Hocker, sind aber immer noch von guter Qualität.

Mir gefällt dann so ein Song wie „Sunset Over The Empire“ besser, der mit einem coolen Background-Chorus aufwartet und eine besondere Ausstrahlung besitzt. Auch die Solos sind wieder einmal ein wahres Highlight.

Fazit

Das Album „Deceivers“ von ARCH ENEMY erstrahlt im frischen Glanz. Sie zeigen auf „Deceivers“ neue Ansätze und kommen wie gewohnt mit viel Energie und Stärke daher. ARCH ENEMY verbinden wie gewohnt brutale kompromisslosen Angriffe mit melodischen Substanzen, legen aber auf „Deceivers“ mehr Wert auf eine atmosphärische Balance und Tiefe. Dies gelingt ihnen häufig auf eine spektakuläre Art und Weise. Immer wieder auffallend bemerkenswert ist das Gitarrenspiel vom Gitarrenduo Jeff Loomis und Michael Amott. Deren Künste sorgen immer wieder für sensationelle Momente und für stürmische Begeisterung. Ich bin von dem Album angetan und sehe die kreative Entwicklung im Sound durchaus positiv, so dass ich dies mit 9 Punkten belohne.

ARCH ENEMY (Homepage, Facebook) are a force in Melodic Death Metal. They have been going their way since 1996 and the constantly growing success has shown that they have gone the right way. Johan Liiva was the first vocalist of the band until 2001 when Angela Gossow took over and did an excellent job as well, becoming a standout feature of the band. At that time a woman was still something new in this genre, but Angela impressively growled away any skepticism at that time. After a long successful time, Angela retired and handed over the mic to Alissa White-Gluz, who growls everything in the band to this day.

„Deceivers“ is now the eleventh album of the band and was released today on 12.08.’22. And when such a veteran band releases a new album, you always wonder if there’s something new to hear or if you’re not leaving your comfort zones. Then let’s listen….

Strong beginning with surprise effect

An intro has been dispensed with and simply integrated into the opener „Handshake With The Devil“. The spectacle begins with shredded guitar leads, until it first goes forward with fat riffing and driving drums, whereby Alissa as usual gives her aggressive growls to the best. But then you hear surprisingly clean meldodic vocal lines from her. This was on the last album on the song „Reason To Believe“ as well, but here it was implemented even better in my opinion. And this enlivens the sound in a positive way in my opinion. Because she also masters this style of singing perfectly and sounds great. This flowing transitions of the clean powerful voice into the growls comes across really strong and brings a new element in the sound. Especially the mystical part from minute 03:40 I like extraordinarily well and the rousing guitar solo follows it. For me the opener is one of the best songs on the album. A wonderful balance of the elements.

I can already hear the no-clean-vocals-faction crying out, but let’s be honest. ARCH ENEMY have presented us merciless crushers countless times. Why shouldn’t they try something new? Nobody will have to worry about ARCH ENEMY coming along plush and cuddly now. Because it is still hard as fuck.

Brutal as ever

is then also directly the second track „Deceiver, Deceiver“! Here again pure destruction is announced. Martial growls with oppressive riffs and galloping drums determine the extremely sinister events. You can also look forward to expansive and finest guitar solos again. This song also occurs with an insanely powerful chorus. A very powerful ass kicking!

Things are moving….

One notices ARCH ENEMY that they do come up with something and strive for a very sophisticated variable songwriting. „The Watcher“ is also one of the highlights of the album for me, because it offers variety again. It starts with rocking melodic riffs that are then blown away by a merciless speed attack. But the melodies from the beginning appear again and again in the chorus and so an interplay of the two forces is created. Further on, the song even develops epic traits during the gigantic solo.

The flowing transition into the next song „Poisoned Arrow“ is wonderfully solved and reveals a symphonic beginning that once again surprises me (positively). This is followed by clean atmospheric guitar sounds until the song stomps off powerfully. The song does not hit now so on the shit, but turns out to be an interesting melodic midtempo cracker, which I would not have expected so.

Dramaturgy and atmosphere

have been created on this album like on no other album before. ARCH ENEMY want to stay as they are, but do not want to sound like they are used to. Therefore, they have tried to bring new elements and facets into the sound. I think that they have succeeded well. However, I would have liked to see more approaches with Alissa’s vocal range. I think that there would be still much feasible without changing the sound in principle. The opener „Handshake With The Devil“ shows impressively how it works. And as long as there are such hard bangers as for example „Deceiver, Deceiver“ or „The Watcher“, we are fully satisfied. Unfortunately the quality of the songs decreases a bit towards the end. The last two tracks are not so spectacular and don’t blow me away, but they are still of good quality.

I like then such a song like „Sunset Over The Empire“ better, which comes up with a cool background chorus and has a special charisma. Also the solos are once again a real highlight.

Conclusion

The album „Deceivers“ from ARCH ENEMY shines in fresh glory. They show on „Deceivers“ new approaches and come as usual with a lot of energy and strength. ARCH ENEMY combine brutal uncompromising attacks with melodic substances, but on „Deceivers“ they put more emphasis on an atmospheric balance and depth. They often succeed in this in a spectacular way. Always strikingly remarkable is the guitar playing of the guitar duo Jeff Loomis and Michael Amott. Their arts provide again and again for sensational moments and for stormy enthusiasm. I am taken by the album and see the creative development in the sound quite positive, so I reward this with 9 points.
