DON TOCABAJO-„Signs“-Review
Instrumentale Kunst

Ziemlich ausgeflippt!
„Demons Are Knocking On My Door“ ist dagegen richtig eingängig geraten.

Review english
Instrumental Art
A review like no other! I can say that in advance. But as the saying goes, „Nothing ventured, nothing gained!“. For those who don’t know DON TOCABAJO (Facebook, Website ), he has already won several awards for his skills. AC/DC lit his fire for rock music. Then he had discovered a love for the bass and used to play this instrument in a metal band called PARASITE long time ago.
For some time now, he has been constantly expanding his horizons and experimenting with the elements of rock and metal sounds. We are definitely not dealing with mainstream here. We’re also not dealing with the rock or metal sound that you’re used to and where you immediately think, „Hey, this rocks like hell!“ The fact is, however, that I was very surprised by the sound.
Two worlds
collide with each other in a very idiosyncratic progressive way. Anyone who only moves and feels comfortable in their usual paths will not feel at home here and need not even try to get into the album. Anyone who is prepared to look a little more beyond the usual horizon will discover a world all their own. A world that DON TOCABAJO opens up to you.
DON TOCABAJO tries to combine quite unusual elements. You can imagine a lot and nothing about it. He is indeed an exceptional musician who is not afraid to merge even the seemingly incompatible. He has received huge recognition for this, not only in Germany. The list of his accumulated prizes and successes (including in the USA) is long. This can be seen in his biography.
I have to admit that it was difficult for me to get into it at first, because the sounds were very unusual. But once you get into it, you really have to admit that DON has indeed succeeded in creating something extraordinary, whether you like it or not.
Each of his albums deals with a specific theme. With „Signs“ (release date 15.03.2021) it is….
the Orient
is making its way into metal. This may not be anything new at first, because many bands have already used this theme. But no one has done it like DON. I have never heard this distinct vein of folkloric instruments in connection with the metal sound anywhere else. Well… and even though I claim to have heard almost everything, I have reached my limits here.
The traditional instruments are beyond my knowledge, although the sound is familiar to me, be it from my holidays in the Orient or from films. Now, before I beat about the bush any further, you should hear for yourself what it’s all about. It’s like a journey on a flying carpet… somehow strange and uncertain, but a extraordinary experience that you should give a chance. Who knows… Maybe it will even become a fascinating experience for one or the other…

„Scared“
opens the album like an incantation of a snake. The first notes of the oriental flute (Zurna) awaken such associations in me. A circus number that stirs up fear according to the title. In fact, I would never have thought that such sounds could be associated with rock or metal sounds. But the cobra rises from its woven basket and it may very well bite. For DON has not pulled the cobra’s poison fangs. He has succeeded in bringing these sounds, which are actually incompatible with the metal sound, into harmony. Yes, it sounds really strange, but after listening to it several times I have to admit that he did a damn good job. Besides the traditional instruments (kanun, ney), cool effects, burly riffing and a good groove determine the song, which also doesn’t shy away from going forward at a brisk pace. Unusually crazy, but somehow captivating!
„Signs“
takes the whole thing to a completely abstruse level with wacky wild percussion. Pretty freaky.
„Demons Are Knocking On My Door“, on the other hand, is really catchy. With a somewhat dark mystical touch, the song appears with fatter riffs and heavier drums.
„Tolerance“ and „Fractal“ are more dominated by an oriental string ensemble.
The last track „Gracias Por…“ creates a beautiful dreamy atmosphere and spoils the ears with beautiful folkloristic guitar sounds, among other things. I would even recommend listening to this song first, because it does not demand so much from the listener.
Fazit
DON TOCABAJO takes the experimental metal sound to the extreme and makes extensive use of oriental classical instruments. A project that certainly cannot be categorised as mainstream at all and will only be accessible to friends of experimental music. It is and remains an extravagant affair that either exerts a special kind of fascination or totally repels you. But isn’t it precisely the departure from the normal and the ordinary that sometimes fascinates and arouses curiosity?
Those, who know me, know that I also like to go beyond boundaries sometimes. And even though I had a hard time with this album, I have to admit apart from the subjective level that it has become an exceptionally good album that has been created with a lot of artistry; with a sense for many details and unusual sounds. I got involved and associate the album with a very special experience that has broadened my musical horizon in a unique way.
I therefore consider a classical final rating inappropriate, as the music cannot be assigned to any of the generally accepted genres. However, I would award 10 points for the artistically courageous creative realisation. And I would like to bet that Don has given me the most unusual album of 2021.
