Die Größten der Großen

METALLICA (Facebook/Homepage) gehören zweifellos zu den größten Bands aller Zeiten und werden z.B. in einem Atemzug mit SLAYER oder MEGADETH und ANTHRAX genannt. Sie haben eine Ära geprägt und waren Inspiration für sehr viele Bands, die nach ihnen kamen.

Bei den ersten vier Alben „Kill ‚Em All“, „Ride The Lightning“, „Master Of Puppets“ und „…And Justice For All“ blieben METALLICA ihrem anfänglichen Stil treu, wobei auf dem letztgenannten Album schon die progressive Ader wie beispielsweise beim Song „One“ deutlich wird. Dies sind allesamt Kultalben, die in keiner Sammlung fehlen dürfen. Und das gilt auch für das selbstbetitelte Album von 1991, was auch gerne als das schwarze Album bezeichnet wird. Dort hatte man einen anderen Sound gewählt, der sich vom Thrash entfernte, aber dafür massiver und grooviger klang. Damit hatte man das meistverkaufte Metal-Album aller Zeiten erschaffen.

METALLICA gingen im weiteren Verlauf nicht auf Nummer sicher, sondern haben ihren Sound stetig entwickelt und auch mal Experimente gewagt. Somit folgte mit „Load“ ein harter Schnitt und man ging die Sache mit mehr Bluesrock an. Daran konnten sich viele Fans nicht gewöhnen. Es folgte mit „Reload“ ein ähnliches Album. Mit den letzten Alben näherte man sich dann wieder mehr dem alten Sound an, wobei St. Anger am wenigsten Akzeptanz bei den Fans einheimsen konnte.

Die Männer hätten es finanziell sicherlich nicht nötig uns weiter mit Musik zu versorgen, denn sie haben sich mit METALLICA schon lange ein ewiges Denkmal gesetzt. Jetzt gehen sie auf die 60 zu und beehren uns mit einem Album und einer Welttour. Ganz abgesehen von meinem persönlichen Eindruck des aktuellen Albums, haben die Männer meine größte Anerkennung für alles, was sie erreicht und uns gegeben haben.

Unzählige Fans

fiebern dem neuen Album „72 Seasons“ entgegen, welches nun am 14.04.’23 erscheinen wird und bei 12 Songs auf eine satten Spielzeit von fast 80 Minuten kommen. Dafür wurden im Vorfeld vier Singles ausgekoppelt: „Lux Aeterna“, „If Darkness Had A Son“, „Screaming Suicide“ und „72 Seasons“.

Es gibt Songs wie die erste Single „Lux Aeterna“, die straight nach vorne prügeln und dem alten METALLICA-Sound der ersten Alben huldigen. Knackig ohne Spielereien wird es in 03:22 Minuten in flottem Tempo auf den Punkt geprügelt. Ein fetziges Solo gibt es obendrauf und somit bin ich wunschlos glücklich. „Lux Aeterna“ hat den Preis für den kürzesten Song auf dem Album inne. Alle anderen schlagen ihn bei der Spieldauer um Längen.

Interessant finde ich, dass die erste Single erheblich mehr Clicks auf YouTube erhalten hat als die anderen. Kam „Lux Aeterna“ auf wahnsinnige 16 Mio Clicks, hat es „Sreaming Suicide“ lediglich noch auf ca. 6 Mio gebracht. Das ist immer noch echt viel, aber eben deutlich weniger, auch wenn man bedenkt, dass die anderen Singles erst eine kürzere Präsenz im Netz haben.

„Screaming Suicide“

als zweite Single zeigt eine andere Facette der Band. Der Song klingt rockiger und verspielter und ist wieder zügig unterwegs. Man merkt, dass auch hier die Leadgitarre sehr spielfreudig auftritt, welche eine rockige Art versprüht und sich auch gerne am Blues bedient. Damit wird die ganze Angelegenheit schön aufgelockert. Alles in allem ein cooler Banger! Diese Blues-Attitüde scheint immer wieder auf dem Album hervor.

Die schwächste Singleauskopplung

war für mich „If Darkness Had A Son“. Warum? Nun, der Song kommt auf eine Spielzeit von sieben Minuten. Und das ist bei diesem Song ein Problem! Dafür passiert zu wenig und das Ganze wirkt zu monoton. Mit einer Länge von maximal vier Minuten wäre der Song für mich deutlich attraktiver. Dabei ist der Sound mit seinen tiefer gestimmten Riffs und dem kraftvollen Refrain an sich eigentlich ganz cool und kommt schön düster rüber.

Bei dem Titeltrack „72 seaons“ haben METALLICA es deutlich interessanter und spannender gestaltet. Hier spielt man verschiedenen Tempovariationen, die den Song mit einer geschmackvollen spannenden Gewürzmischung versehen. So kommt ein feuriges Süppchen heraus, dass man gerne auslöffelt. Ein echt geiler Track!

Und die anderen Songs?

Nun wird es Zeit die Songs zu beleuchten, die noch nicht jeder kennt. „Shadows Follow“ geht auch locker ins Ohr. Nach dem Opener und Titeltrack „72 Seasons“ kann der Track durchaus das Niveau halten und kann sogar mit dem Refrain überraschen. Denn diese gezogenen melodischen Vocals hätte ich zumindest so nicht erwartet und stehen in einem coolen Kontrast zu den Schmettervocals. Die Leadgitarre kann sich hier ordentlich austoben und begeistert mit zünftigen Solos. Ja, das Ding rockt! Gefällt mir!

„Sleepwalk My Life Away“ beginnt mit starkem Bass. Daraus entwickelt sich eine groovige rockige Nummer, die aber die gleiche Schwäche wie „If Darkness Had A Son“ innehat. Es wird zu sehr in die Länge gezogen. Und dieses Gefühl habe ich bei einigen Songs auf dem Album. Eigentlich sehr coole Ideen werden zu sehr in die Länge gezogen, anstatt sie auf den Punkt zu bringen. So wirkt „You Must Burn“ sogar kraftloser als der Titel es vermuten lassen würde. Das Beste an dem Song ist noch der Solopart.

„Crown Of A Barbed Wire“ ist auch ziemlich langweilig geraten und schläfert mich eher ein. Der Song kommt irgendwie nicht so richtig aus den Puschen.

Also wenn das oben erwähnte „Lux Aeterna“ mich im Mittelteil des Albums nicht wieder wachgeprügelt hätte, wäre die Gefahr groß gewesen, dass sich meine Augenlider gesenkt hätten und ich ein kurzes Nickerchen gemacht hätte. Zum Glück weckt mich ebenso ein Song wie „Chasing The Light“ wieder auf. Das Tempo zieht endlich wieder an und es passiert wieder was. „Too Far Gone“ geht sogar noch ne Spur knackiger zur Sache und treibt den Puls nach oben.

Kommen wir zu einem weiteren Highlight: „Room Of Mirrors“

Hier stimmt alles! Man tritt das Gaspedal und sprintet nach vorne. Der Song ist wunderbar eingängig und rockt sich sofort in mein Herz und wird mit einem freudig erhöhten Herzschlag begrüßt. Da braucht man gar nicht viele Worte verlieren. Der Song mach einfach Spaß!

Der längste Track „Inamorata“

kommt mit einer opulenten Spielzeit von 11 Minuten daher. Puhhh…. das könnte auch in die Buchse gehen. Und tatsächlich kann mich der Song echt nicht abholen. Der Song bleibt seinem Rhythmus treu und entwickelt einfach keine Dynamik. Die ersten vier Minuten vergehen recht unspektakulär. Dann sorgt zumindest ein geiles Gitarrensolo für Unterhaltung. Und dann…. Ja dann passiert weiterhin nicht viel. Ein zurückhaltender Part mit melodischen Vocals von James, bis es dann wieder in den gewohnten Trott geht. Und dann hat man immer noch fünf Minuten vor sich. In der letzten Minute kommt noch mal dank eines weiteren Gitarrensolos ein wenig Action auf. Doch für die 11 Minuten kommt mir da zu wenig.

Fazit

METALLICA liefern mit „72 Seasons“ ein gutes Album ab. Es ist für mich ein Album, dass mich ansprechend unterhält und mit einigen Highlights abholen kann. Doch muss ich sagen, dass die knackige Härte aus alten Tagen, die ich z.B. wieder auf dem letzten Album „Hardwired… To Self Destruct“ erfreulicherweise bei einigen Tracks genießen durfte, hier nur spärlich vorhanden ist. Manche Riffs erinnern mich an die alten Zeiten, aber im allgemeinen klingt der Sound etwas leichter und rockiger. Dies wäre jetzt gar nicht so das Problem, aber oft werden die Songs unnötig in die Länge gezogen und es wird stellenweise etwas langatmig. Gerade die im Tempo gemäßigten Songs haben dieses Manko. Einige Songs wären mit kürzerer Spielzeit meiner Meinung nach attraktiver.

Ich hätte mir gewünscht, dass sie noch mal kräftiger den Hammer von „Kill ‚Em All“ geschwungen hätten, um mich umzuhauen, oder ein Blitzgewitter von „Ride The Lightning“ losgelassen hätten, um mich zu elektrisieren. So hätte man noch mal mehr den Bezug zum Beginn ihrer Karriere ziehen können und die Musik mit der heutigen Zeit verbunden.

Millionen Fans werden sich das Album anhören und es wird fast genauso viele Meinungen zu dem Album geben. Für mich persönlich bleibt das Album eine solide Leistung mit einigen Highlights, aber auch nicht mehr. Da hat mir „Hardwired…To Self Destruct“ noch besser gefallen. Wenn ich nur die Songs berücksichtigen würde, die mir persönlich am meisten gefallen haben, würden diese auf eine Spielzeit von ca. 40 Minuten kommen und diese würde ich mit guten 8 oder sogar 9 Punkten bewerten. Aber im Gesamtbild sind für mich nicht mehr als sieben Punkte drin.

METALLICA did not play it safe in the further course, but developed their sound constantly and also dared experiments. Thus, a hard cut followed with „Load“ and they approached the matter with more blues rock. Many fans could not get used to this. With „Reload“ a similar album followed. With the last albums they approached the old sound again, whereby St. Anger could gain the least acceptance with the fans.

Crisp without gimmicks, it is beaten to the point in 03:22 minutes at a brisk pace. There is a groovy solo on top and thus I am happy as can be. „Lux Aeterna“ holds the prize for shortest song on the album. All the others beat it by a long way in terms of playing time.

I find it interesting that the first single has received considerably more clicks on YouTube than the others. While „Lux Aeterna“ got 16 million clicks, „Sreaming Suicide“ only got about 6 million. That’s still a lot, but significantly less, even if you consider that the other singles have only a shorter presence on the net.

„Screaming Suicide“

as the second single shows another facet of the band. The song sounds more rocky and playful and is again brisk on the road. You notice that the lead guitar is also very playful here. It has a rocking nature that likes to make use of the blues. So the whole affair is loosened up nicely. All in all a cool banger! This blues attitude shines out again and again on the album.

The weakest single release

was „If Darkness Had A Son“ for me. Why? Well, the song comes to a playing time of seven minutes. And that is a problem with this song! Too little happens and the whole thing seems too monotonous. With a maximum length of four minutes the song would be much more attractive for me. Yet the sound with its lower-pitched riffs and the powerful chorus is actually quite cool and comes across nicely gloomy.

In the title track „72 seaons“ METALLICA have made it much more interesting and exciting. Here they play different tempo variations, which provide the song with a tasty exciting spice mixture. So comes out a fiery soup that you like to spoon out. A really cool track!

And the other songs?

Now it’s time to highlight the songs that not everyone knows yet. „Shadows Follow“ as the second track also goes easily into the ear. It can definitely keep the level and can even surprise with the chorus. Because these melodic vocals I would not have expected at least so and stand in a cool contrast to the smashing vocals. The lead guitar can let off steam here properly and inspires with hearty solos. Yes, this song rocks! I like it!

„Sleepwalk My Life Away“ begins with strong bass. It develops into a groovy rocking number, but it has the same weakness as „If Darkness Had A Son“. It is dragged out too much. And I have this feeling with some songs on the album. Actually very cool ideas are dragged out too much instead of getting to the point. So „You Must Burn“ seems even more powerless than the title would suggest. The best part of the song is still the solo part. „Crown Of A Barbed Wire“ is also rather boring and puts me to sleep. The song somehow doesn’t really get going.

So if the aforementioned „Lux Aeterna“ hadn’t knocked me awake again in the middle part of the album, there would have been a great danger that my eyelids would have lowered and I would have taken a short nap. Fortunately, the song „Chasing The Light“ is a further lively song. The tempo finally picks up and something happens again. „Too Far Gone“ is even a bit crisper and drives the pulse up.

Let’s move on to a further highlight: „Room Of Mirrors“.

Everything is right here! They step on the gas pedal and sprint forward. The song is wonderfully catchy and rocks immediately into my heart and greeted with a joyfully increased heartbeat. There is no need to lose many words. The song is just fun!

The longest Track „Inamorata“

„Inamorata“ comes along with an opulent playing time of 11 minutes. Puhhh…. A tough task that can also go wrong. And actually the song really can’t pick me up. The song stays true to its rhythm and just doesn’t develop any dynamics. The first four minutes pass quite unspectacularly. Then at least a cool guitar solo provides entertainment. And then…. Yes then still not much happens. A restrained part with melodic vocals from James, until it then goes back into the usual rut. And then you still have five minutes to go. In the last minute there is a little action thanks to another guitar solo. But for the 11 minutes there comes too little for me.

Conclusion

METALLICA deliver a good album with „72 Seasons“. It is for me an album that entertains me appealingly and can pick up with some highlights. But I have to say that the crisp hardness from the old days, which I e.g. again on the last album „Hardwired… To Self Destruct“ I was pleased to enjoy on some tracks, is only sparsely present here. Some riffs remind me of the old times, but in general it sounds a bit lighter and rockier. This would not be such a problem, but often the songs are unnecessarily stretched out and it becomes a bit long-winded in places. Especially the songs that are moderate in tempo have this shortcoming. Some songs would be more attractive with shorter playing time in my opinion.

I would have liked them to have swung the hammer of „Kill ‚Em All“ harder to knock me out, or let loose a lightning storm of „Ride The Lightning“ to electrify me. So METALLICA could have drawn more the reference to the beginning of their career and connected their sound with the present time.

Millions of fans will listen to the album and there will be almost as many opinions about it. For me personally, the album remains a solid performance with some highlights, but nothing more. I liked „Hardwired…To Self Destruct“ even better. If I were to consider only the songs that I personally liked the most, they would come to a playing time of 40 minutes and I would rate those with a good 8 or even 9 points. But in the overall picture there are no more than seven points for me.
