NECROTTED – „Imperium“ Review

NECROTTED (Facebook) sind für ihren harten kompromisslosen Metal bekannt und haben sich damit schon länger einen guten Namen in der Szene gemacht. Der Sound fährt insgesamt eine klare konsequente Linie. Es gibt keine Spielereien, sondern knallharten Death Metal ganz ohne cleane Vocals. Es gibt viele Fans, die genau das begrüßen. Viel Spielereien oder eine progressive Ader sucht man vergebens, so dass die Songs auch alle mit einer „normalen“ knackigen Spielzeit daherkommen. Ihr neues Album „Imperium“ haben sie wieder als Konzeptalbum gestaltet und dies setzt die Geschichte des Vorgängeralbums fort.

Die Storyline

Hier ein kleiner Background über die Storyline, den mir Sänger Fabian netterweise mitgeteilt hat. Seine Zusammenfassung lautet folgendermaßen:

„Imperium“ ist erneut ein Konzeptalbum, wie eigentlich fast alle unsere Alben. Mit dem Vorgängeralbum „Operation: Mental Castration“ haben wir eine neue Lore um einen politisch aktiven Protagonisten geschaffen, der nach und nach von einer unbekannten Macht gewaltsam umerzogen wird und letztendlich zu dem wird, was er eigentlich geschworen hatte zu bekämpfen.

Dieser Konflikt endet schließlich in seinem Selbstmord. „Imperium“ knüpft storytechnisch genau an diesem Ende an: Das Bewusstsein des physisch verstorbenen Protagonisten wird in eine virtuelle Welt geladen, in der sich dessen moralischer und ethischer Verfall fortsetzt, die er jedoch lernt zu manipulieren und zu deren absolutistischem Herrscher er sich aufschwingt.

Die Storyline bildet damit ein passendes Grundgerüst für dystopische, gesellschaftspolitische Themen in den einzelnen Songtexten. Sie schränkt die Kreativität damit nicht ein, sondern bietet ganz im Gegenteil sogar die Möglichkeit, Themen, die man ohnehin behandeln möchte, aus einer ganz anderen Perspektive darzustellen und zu präsentieren.

Der Opener „A Veiled Awakening“

holt umgehend die finsteren Dämonen aus der Tiefe. Hier fallen bereits die brachialen Drums auf. Die Felle werden verdammt hart geprügelt, was sich häufig auch in einem schonungslosen Blastbeat-Donnerwetter entlädt. Schroffe Riffs und starke Bassschwingungen gehören zur selbstverständlich zum guten Ton. Trotzdem lässt man die Melodik nicht völlig außer Acht. Die Texte werden in Form von düsteren Growls und keifende Screams geschmettert. Im Zusammenhang mit einigen instrumentalen Ausbrüchen hat für mich der ganze Sound noch eine gute Dosis Black Metal abbekommen.

Black Metal Einflüsse

hört man z.B. auch beim Song „Reich der Gier“ zu Beginn. Da fliegen schon die Fetzen mit Blastbeats und super schnellem Riffing. Dann wird das Tempo zurückgefahren, aber es wird nicht zurückhaltender. Insgesamt ist es ein Song mit vielen Rhythmuswechseln. Achtet auch mal wirklich explizit auf die Drums! Das ist schon eine echt krasse Leistung. Meine Hochachtung hat der Drummer jedenfalls. Im Vergleich zum letzten Album hat man das gleiche Konzept, nur halt von allem noch ne volle Schüppe mehr. Stimmlich klingt Fabian noch heftiger. Die Screams wirken noch fieser und die Growls noch finsterer. Dabei ist der gesamte Sound noch mehr im Flow und offenbart mehr Facetten als auf dem Vorgängeralbum.

Eine stürmische See

Das NECROTTED auch mal „Mitleid“ mit dem Hörer haben, zeigen sie in Songs wie „Sow Sorrow For Victory“. Ist natürlich nur Spaß, aber der Song hat tatsächlich Momente der Ruhe zu bieten, in denen das schwarze Meer nicht ganz so aufgepeitscht wird. Doch davon ist erst mal nichts zu hören. Gerade durch die tatkräftige Unterstützung bei den Vocals durch Kevin und Markus von der Band ‚Acranius“ wird es besonders heftig und finster. Die tosenden gewaltigen Wellen kommen zur Ruhe und geben die Gelegenheit in ein grandioses episches Gitarrensolo überzugehen. Damit hätte ich nicht gerechnet und das ist gut so. So bekommt dieser zu Beginn tiefschwarze Song noch mal eine andere Komponente. Ein Highlight für mich!

Ich empfinde es als positive Entwicklung, dass man den Melodien mehr Raum gegeben hat. Es ist eine schöne Komponente im Sound und macht ihn interessanter und vielschichtiger. Ein Aufweichen des Sounds bedeutet das aber auf keinen Fall. Ich kann Euch versprechen, dass der Sound meiner Meinung nach noch an Härte zugelegt hat.

Es ist ein Fest der Extreme bei NECROTTED.

Man nehme z.B. den Song „Ignorance Is Fear“. Was für ein brutaler Angriff! Die Wechsel zwischen Screams und Growls sind immer wieder beeindruckend. Und dieses abartig vernichtende Drumming ist eine Offenbarung. Auch wenn der Sound gnadenlos ist, so schaffen es NECROTTED den Hörer nicht einfach nur zuzuballern, sondern mit viel Abwechslung von einer zerstörerischen Ekstase in die nächste zu befördern. So sorgen auch die Breakdowns immer wieder für einen mächtigen Abriss und auch die Gitarrenfraktion lässt sich immer was einfallen, indem man neben den sägenden bestialischen Riffs mit melodischen Leads für Auflockerung und auch Atmosphäre sorgt, wie z.B. ab Minute 02:27.

Fazit

NECROTTED erzeugen mit „Imperium“ eine Welt der Zerstörung. Ein durch und durch krasses Album! Damit lässt sich jede Festung einreißen oder jeder Club in Schutt und Asche legen. Es ist ein musikalisches Imperium für jeden Extreme Metal Fan, der bereit ist sich dieser schonungslosen Erfahrung hinzugeben und tatsächlich den Songs auch die nötige Aufmerksamkeit zu schenken. Denn es gibt mehr zu entdecken als man vielleicht meinen könnte.

NECROTTED (Facebook) are known for their hard, uncompromising metal and they have gained a lot of attention in the metal scene. The sound drives a clear consistent line. There are no gimmicks, but hard death metal without any clean vocals. There are many fans who welcome exactly that. Much gimmicks or a progressive vein is missed, so that the songs all come along with a „normal“ crisp playing time. Their new album „Imperium“ is again designed as a concept album and this continues the story of the previous album.

The toryline

Here’s a little background on the storyline that singer Fabian was kind enough to share with me. His summary is as follows:

„Imperium“ is again a concept album, like actually almost all our albums. With the previous album „Operation: Mental Castration“ we created a new lore around a politically active protagonist, who is gradually and forcibly re-educated by an unknown power and eventually becomes what he had actually sworn to fight.

This conflict finally ends in his suicide. In terms of storytelling, „Imperium“ picks up precisely at this end: The consciousness of the physically deceased protagonist is loaded into a virtual world in which his moral and ethical decay continues, but which he learns to manipulate and whose absolutist ruler he rises to become.

The storyline thus forms a suitable basic framework for dystopian, socio-political themes in the individual song lyrics. It does not restrict creativity, but on the contrary even offers the possibility to present topics, which one would like to deal with anyway, from a completely different perspective.

The opener „A Veiled Awakening“

immediately brings the dark demons out of the depths. Here, the brute drums are already noticeable. The drum skins are beaten damn hard, which often also discharges in a relentless blastbeat thunderstorm. Rough riffs and strong bass vibrations are of course part of it. Nevertheless, the melodic is not completely disregarded. The lyrics are belted out in the form of gloomy growls and nagging screams. In connection with some instrumental outbreaks, the whole sound for me still got a good dose of black metal.

can be heard, for example, in the song „Reich der Gier“ at the beginning. There the shreds already fly with blast beats and super fast riffing. Then the tempo is reduced, but it does not become more restrained. Overall, it’s a song with a lot of rhythm changes. Also pay really explicit attention to the drums! That is already a really crass performance. In any case, the drummer has my respect. Compared to the last album, the concept is the same, but with a lot more of everything. Vocally Fabian sounds even heavier. The screams seem even nastier and the growls even more sinister. The entire sound is even more in the flow and reveals more facets than on the previous album.

A stormy sea

That NECROTTED also sometimes „pity“ the listener, they show in songs like „Sow Sorrow For Victory“. Is of course only fun, but the song actually has moments of relaxation to offer, in which the black sea is not so heavy whipped up. But nothing of that is to be heard for the time being. Especially through the active support on vocals by Kevin and Markus from the band ‚Acranius“ it becomes particularly violent and dark. The roaring mighty waves come to rest and give the opportunity to go into a grandiose epic guitar solo. I would not have expected that and that is good. So this at the beginning deep black song gets another component. A highlight for me!

I feel it is a positive development that more space has been given to the melodies. It is a nice component in the sound and makes it more interesting and multilayered. However, it does not mean a softening of the sound in any way. I can promise you that the sound has increased in hardness in my opinion.

It’s a feast of extremes at NECROTTED.

Take for example the song „Ignorance Is Fear“. What a brutal attack! The changes between screams and growls are always impressive. And this devastating drumming is a revelation. Even if the sound is merciless, NECROTTED manage not to just blast the listener, but to transport him from one destructive ecstasy to the next with a good variety. So also the breakdowns provide again and again for a powerful demolition. Also the guitar faction always comes up with something by providing melodic leads for loosening up and also atmosphere next to the sawing bestial riffs, as for example from minute 02:27.

Conclusion

NECROTTED create a world of destruction with „Imperium“. A thoroughly crass album! With it, any fortress can be torn down or any club can be reduced to rubble. It is a musical empire for every extreme metal fan who is willing to surrender to this relentless experience and actually pay the necessary attention to the songs. Because there is more to discover than you might think.
