PARKWAY DRIVE – „Darker Still“ Review
(English review below)
PARKWAY DRIVE waren früher mal erheblich wilder unterwegs.

English version
(English review below)
PARKWAY DRIVE (Homepage / Facebook) are now among the absolute top acts. In the meantime, they have been able to gather a huge crowd of fans around them.
However, it must also be said that PARKWAY DRIVE’s sound has changed. So in the end it’s not the number of fans and followers that counts for me, whether I like the musical result or not. My formerly very appreciated band FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH, for example, disappointed me with their new album „AfterLive“. Boring mainstream sound that hardly gives off any heavy vibes. Especially with the album cover they suggest something that can hardly be heard on the album, namely straigt-in-your-face-metal. For the most part, the new material sounds like sucked-out bubblegum, which is just tasteless and limp.
To take it in advance: PARKWAY DRIVE this has not happened with their album „Darker Still“. Because the new album is heavy! But it has not really convinced me. I will explain the reasons in the following.
Boom!
Yes! This is how you start an album imposingly! „Ground Zero“ appears directly massive. Besides fat riffs, nice pleasing melodies dominate. It’s not the hardest gear PARKWAY DRIVE can drive, but it puts the listener in the right mood for the album. A strong feature, which has become a standard with the band, is the powerful chorus, which always invites to sing along, so also in this song. With this you can of course excellently inspire the masses.
PARKWAY DRIVE master this art perfectly and celebrate this in perfection on the new album. Thus, the basic requirements for a successful album are already fulfilled. The songs hit mighty and have a rousing groove that makes tired bones rattle.
The song „Glitch“ is no exception.
But….
I wonder where the old times have gone. PARKWAY DRIVE used to be much wilder in the past. It was an explosive mixture of different areas of hard metal: Melodic Death Metal, Groove Metal, Metalcore… Somehow everything was there. When I think of a song like „Breaking Point“ (album „Horizons“) or „Romance Is Dead“ (album „Killing With A Smile“), I ask myself why these facets have been completely faded out by now. I miss the fast songs, where the speed rocket was ignited more often, which set a circle pit under fire.
With the album „Ire“ some things became different. There were songs that sounded more like modern metal. But the mixture was good. However, they intensified this new sound with „Reverence“ and now with „Darker Still“ we have an album that consists only of such songs. In fact there is a ballad to be heard as the title track „Darker Still“. Hmmmm….
A moody song that is flawlessly performed, but still leaves a bit of boredom for me. It’s nothing you wouldn’t have heard elsewhere, even if it’s performed perfectly in terms of craftsmanship, as already mentioned.
The strengths
The main strength of the album lies in the energy-injected songs, at least for my taste. Unfortunately, such a breaker as „Soul Bleach“ remains the only exception on the album. The song just makes real pressure and kicks you right in the ass. Here singer Winston shows his darkest side and growls massively aggressive. Unfortunately only much too short. What I dislike is the fact that the songs are almost all in the stomping midtempo range. Everything sounds mighty bombastic, but in the long run it seems a little monotonous.
I really like the finale, though. „From The Heart Of The Darkness“ really packs a punch. An epic and atmospherically dense final track. Here is made use of martial choruses a la Sparta, which have been used more often elsewhere, but nevertheless the battle cries of the Spartans in this songs have been very well implemented and integrated.
Conclusion
PARKWAY DRIVE inspire the masses and this will not change with the new album „Darker Still“. Quite the opposite! The sound is fully trimmed for a great show and will certainly conquer the charts! PARKWAY DRIVE are now fully succed in modern metal, where I just miss the aggressiveness and ferocity of the past in the overall sound. A mixture of the new sound and the old sound would be a super mixture for me. So remains a perfect strong production on a massive album with many anthems, but unfortunately the variance and tension also suffer from this. But to give less than eight points would not be fair, because a neutrally seen it has become a good album.
