Warum?
Was könnte man also bei diesem Album kritisieren?
So verzichtet das finstere „Like The Sea I Raged“ komplett auf cleane Vocals, wogegen beispielsweise beim sehr melodischen „Ten Years On The Tundra“ mehr cleane Vocals eingesetzt werden.
Fazit

OAK, ASH & THORN (Facebook) from Denver in the U.S.A. are once again a discovery from our ‚METALHEADs new stuff‚ playlist. It’s amazing what brilliant newcomer and underground bands there are. I’m always totally blown away by the incredibly high quality and the great variety. So I can say with full confidence:
ROCK & METAL will never die!
OAK, ASH & THORN are definitely one of those promising bands that make you want to hear more from them. Why? Well…. I would like to take a closer look at the new album „Our Grief Is Thus“, which will be released tomorrow six years after the debut „May Every Altar Linger“.
„Auras“ was the first song I heard from the band and I was immediately hooked, because the melodic death metal is once again interpreted very imaginatively and performed wonderfully. I also can’t completely deny a progressive approach, because the musical influences are diverse. The song „Auras“ also makes it very clear that the technical level is incredibly high in all areas. I was particularly struck by the drums, which are beaten at an absolutely fantastic level.
The amazing Cierra White presents a consistently high level of artistry on the drums. It comes across as lively and dynamic as I hardly hear anywhere else. There are many demanding rhythm changes, which merge into one another without the musical flow being lost. Mercilessly rattling blast beats are also part of the repertoire. I also really like the lively use of the cymbals. Her (sometimes unorthodox) style of playing thus stands out far from the standard.
Raised to a new level
Compared to the debut, they have really reached a much higher level in all areas. The songs on the debut were already good, but cannot be compared with the new material. The songwriting is considerably more sophisticated and the craftsmanship is of a much higher technical standard. I already mentioned the progressive approach. This is reflected not only in the sophisticated song structures but also in the vocals. So what could you criticize about this album? In my opinion, nothing!
Singer Adam impresses with a wide range of his vocal abilities. The use of powerful melodic vocals is really very successful and is just as impressive as the extreme vocals. Basically, the album is heavy fare, but there are very different degrees of heaviness on offer here and one also likes to flirt with power metal. This makes „Auras“ a shining example of the entire new sound of OAK, ASH & THORN, as it lays claim to all the facets that can be heard on the entire album.
The sonorous song „Dying Culture“ is also a prime example of this harmonious constellation of components. The cleanly sung chorus in particular makes an epic appearance amidst the brutal attacks.
Refreshing interpretation of melodic death metal
So it’s not surprising that no two songs sound the same. Every song has its own story. There are many musical ingredients that are always mixed differently. For example, the dark „Like The Sea I Raged“ completely dispenses with clean vocals, whereas the very melodic „Ten Years On The Tundra“ uses more clean vocals. „Light My Pyre“ is a veritable drum storm and goes off like a whirling tornado that leaves a trail of destruction in its path. Accordingly, the guitar riffs race through the song and saw through your brain, while the wildly thrashing drums get your heart pumping.
„Distant Mountains, Distant Gods“ slows down the tempo and is ominous and melancholic. The album’s finale is heralded by „Unchain The Wolf“. You should fasten your seatbelts once again, because you’re in for another hell of a ride. The fuel consists of speed and aggression and the song whips forward in such a way that there is no chance of recovery. It’s another multi-layered song, but it still remains a homogeneous, intoxicating experience. That’s exactly what OAK, ASH & THORN are! They really impressed me.
Conclusion
With „Our Grief Is Thus“, OAK, ASH & THORN present a fantastic album that combines destructive melodic death metal with extremely forceful power metal and sprinkles in a pinch of black metal. Everything is realized extremely dynamically at the highest technical level, with dark abysses, unrestrained attacks and epic excursions telling highly appealing and eventful stories.
Personally, I can’t think of any criticism of this album. For me, OAK, ASH & THORN offer perfect entertainment with a quite innovative mixture of different styles of metal music. In addition, the sophisticated songs are realized with great attention to detail and technical excellence. That’s why I’m proud to reward this great performance with the highest score.
