Böse Überraschung

DEFECTO (Facebook, Homepage) aus Dänemark waren seit ihrem letzten super Album „Duality“ (Review) sehr aktiv. Aufgrund des bösen Überraschungsvirus namens COVID beschränkt sich diese Aktivität allerdings seitdem gezwungenermaßen mehr auf das Songwriting als auf Live-Konzerte. Das letzte Album „Duality“ von DEFECTO war ein sehr vielfältiges Album. Richtige Stimmungsmacher waren darunter. Zu dem Zeitpunkt war noch alles in Butter und niemand dachte an so etwas wie COVID 19. Die Laune war bestens. Aber die Zeiten ändern sich. Und in den letzten zwei Jahren extremer als jemals zuvor. DEFECTO haben in den letzten Monaten neue Singles veröffentlicht. Da dachten wir uns von ‚metal-heads.de‘, dass es mal wieder Zeit für ein kleines Update wäre und haben mal bei der Band nachgefragt, was so los ist.

Ein Rückblick

Metalhead: Hallo! Seit Eurem letzten Album „Duality“ ist nun über ein Jahr vergangen. Wie geht es Euch?

DEFECTO: Hallo zusammen! Zunächst einmal vielen Dank für Eure netten Worte über unsere neuesten Singles sowie für eure Rezension von „Duality“. Wir wissen das wirklich zu schätzen! Was unseren aktuellen Status angeht, ist es ehrlich gesagt nicht die beste Zeit, um Musiker zu sein, wie Du Dir wahrscheinlich vorstellen kannst. Wir sind seit 2019 nicht mehr wirklich auf Tour gewesen oder haben größere Konzerte gespielt. Also fühlen wir uns wahrscheinlich ein bisschen in unserem Studio gefangen. Aber zumindest können wir neue Musik schreiben. Also kommt auch etwas Gutes dabei heraus, denke ich!

Familie und Tradition

Metalhead: Wie habt Ihr die Weihnachtsfeiertage verbracht?

DEFECTO: Weihnachten verbringen wir normalerweise nur mit unseren Familien und machen die üblichen dänischen Weihnachtstraditionen – Ihr wisst schon: um den Baum tanzen, Weihnachtslieder singen und viel zu viel essen und solche Sachen. Nicht gerade der Stoff, aus dem Heavy Metal gemacht ist, aber wir genießen es 🙂

Musik als Stimmungsindikator

Metalhead: Auf Eurem letzten Album „Duality“ gab es ein buntes Überraschungspaket. Es ist schwer, Euch in eine Schublade zu stecken. Auf „Duality“ gibt es sehr rockige und leichte Songs. Ich erinnere mich zum Beispiel gerne an das lustige Video zu „Rise“! Die neuen Singles sind durchweg härter und düsterer. Dazu kommt ein viel progressiverer Ansatz.

Ist Eure Musik letztlich ein Ausdruck Eurer Gefühlswelt, die von den Geschehnissen in der Welt und in Eurem Leben beeinflusst wird?

DEFECTO: Gute Frage! Ich denke, es ist eine Mischung aus all den Dingen, die Du sagst: Wie wir uns fühlen, was in unserem Leben passiert, was wir gerne hören, wie wir uns zu einem bestimmten Zeitpunkt sehen. „Duality“ war ein interessantes Album, das einige Veränderungen für die Band markierte. Bei „Duality“ hatten wir generell mehr Spaß am Songwriting und nahmen nicht alles so ernst. Dies kann man an den Videos erkennen. Vor allem bei Songs wie „Rise“ und „All for You“ – diese Songs sind eindeutig nicht düster oder ernst, also hätte es keinen Sinn gemacht, zu sehr in diese Richtung zu gehen!

Fans-Reaktionen auf „Duality“

Metalhead: Die Kritiken für „Duality“ waren größtenteils sehr positiv. Wurde es auch von den Fans gut aufgenommen? Konntet Ihr euer Album trotz der Pandemiekrise erfolgreich vermarkten?

DEFECTO: Die Reaktionen waren ein bisschen gemischt! Meistens war es sehr positiv, aber natürlich gibt es auch einige Leute, die sich auf Dinge konzentrieren, die sie auf „Duality“ weniger mochten, aber als Künstler wird das nie aufhören zu passieren, also macht uns das nicht so viel aus. Wir haben das Glück, einige wirklich engagierte Fans zu haben, und das haben wir definitiv auch gespürt, als wir „Duality“ veröffentlicht haben. Was das Marketing angeht, lief es wegen Corona ziemlich schlecht, aber wie schon gesagt, konnten wir nicht viel tun, und wir sind ehrlich gesagt an einem Punkt, an dem wir unsere Energie lieber in unsere neue Musik stecken.

Nach vorne schauen

Metalhead: Ich bin zurückgegangen und habe mein Review zu Eurem letzten Album gelesen. Das war im Oktober 2020, wo ich hoffte, dass Covid bald enden würde, damit ich euch live spielen sehen könnte. Leider ist mein Wunsch nicht in Erfüllung gegangen und das Jahr 2021 wurde auch von Covid 19 bestraft. Ein Ende dieser verfluchten Krise scheint nicht in Sicht zu sein. Ihr habt 2018 in einem Interview mit ‚metal-heads.de‘ zum Ausdruck gebracht, dass Ihr eine Live-Band seid und diese Gigs mehr als alles andere genießt.

Konntet Ihr überhaupt Auftritte spielen und Euer neues Album live präsentieren?

DEFECTO: Ja, das ist so wahr! Die Live-Erfahrung bringt einen ganz anderen Aspekt in die Musik, und wir haben das Gefühl, dass viele Leute, die von unseren Platten nicht so begeistert sind, unsere Liveshows wahrscheinlich viel interessanter finden. Aber leider haben wir nicht wirklich viel von „Duality“ spielen können. Durch Corona haben wir viele Chancen verpasst. Aber wir wollen nach vorne schauen und uns darauf konzentrieren, das Beste, was wir haben, auf unser nächstes Album zu bringen, und das einfach tun, anstatt traurig darüber zu sein, was wir nicht tun konnten. Nicht, dass wir „Duality“ vergessen wollen, und die Songs von diesem Album werden auch in Zukunft ihren Platz in den Setlists haben, aber es gibt nicht viel anderes zu tun, als weiterzumachen.

Streaming-Events

Metalhead: Viele Bands, die zu Beginn der Krise den sogenannten Streaming-Events kritisch gegenüberstanden, sind jetzt offener für dieses Thema. Auch wenn sie natürlich kein Ersatz für echte Live-Konzerte sind, habe ich Streaming-Konzerte gesehen, die mich gut unterhalten haben. Wie steht Ihr dazu?

DEFECTO: Das haben wir tatsächlich gemacht! Aber, Überraschung, wir haben es als Teil unserer dänischen Schultour gemacht, die wir in Dänemark machen. Dort besuchen wir im Grunde Grundschulen und spielen vor Massen von 8-15-Jährigen spielen, um ihnen von der Musik und der Geschichte hinter allem zu erzählen. Wir hatten ein paar Wochen, in denen wir unsere Konzerte streamen mussten, und das war zwar besser als gar nichts, aber es ist einfach nicht annähernd so gut wie die Realität. Ich will nicht negativ klingen, aber man könnte sich genauso gut ein Konzert auf YouTube ansehen – das Erlebnis ist nicht viel anders, oder vielleicht ist das nur der konzerthungrige Musiker in mir, der so denkt.

Es wird ernst

Metalhead: Nun also die neuen Singles… Und ich muss sagen, dass der Härtegrad sehr hoch angesiedelt ist. „Aftermath“ holt ad hoc die dicke Keule raus. Die Vocals sind passend zum Thema des Songs böse aggressiv. Der Song weiß mit geilen Riffs und allerlei verrückten Effekten und Ideen zu überraschen. So höre man z.B. den Part ab Minute 02:23 . Wirklich cool gemacht!

Wir haben gerade darüber gesprochen, dass das Songwriting auch immer ein Ergebnis der aktuellen Situation und Gefühlswelt ist. Könnt Ihr uns etwas über Entstehung und Inhalt der neuen Songs erzählen?

DEFECTO: Das Songwriting für unser kommendes Album hat sich im Vergleich zu früheren Alben wieder einmal komplett verändert. Dieses Mal hat die Band beschlossen, unsere beiden Hauptsongwriter – Nicklas und Frederik – für 2 Monate von ihren Hauptjobs zu beurlauben, um im Studio zu sitzen und so viele Songs wie möglich zu schreiben. Es ist also das erste Mal, dass alle Songs im Grunde zur gleichen Zeit geschrieben wurden, was den höheren Grad an Ähnlichkeit zwischen den Songs erklären könnte. Die Inspiration für die Songs kam sicherlich vom Zustand der Welt und von einigen der Frustrationen, die wir angesichts der Dinge, die vor sich gehen, empfinden. Der nächste Song „Ball of Hatred“, der am Freitag, den 21. Januar erscheint, beschäftigt sich ebenfalls mit diesen Dingen und steigert den Härtegrad noch weiter.

Neues Album 2022?

Metalhead: Waren die letzten Singles ein abgeschlossenes Trio, das nichts mit einem kommenden Album zu tun haben wird? Oder geben sie die Richtung vor, in die das zukünftige Material gehen wird?

DEFECTO: Sie geben auf jeden Fall bis zu einem gewissen Grad eine Richtung vor und könnten eventuell auf unserem nächsten Album landen. Wir haben uns absichtlich nicht entschieden, was wir tun werden, sondern haben stattdessen einfach beschlossen, Songs zu veröffentlichen, wenn wir Lust dazu haben, und uns nicht zu viele Gedanken darüber zu machen, wie sie in den Kontext eines Albums passen. Dieses Jahr (2022) werden wir so viele Songs wie möglich fertigstellen (und vielleicht auch veröffentlichen), und wenn wir das Gefühl haben, dass wir dazu bereit sind, werden wir sie im Rahmen eines Albums bearbeiten.

Neue Single „Ball Of Hatred“ am 21. Januar

Metalhead: Habt Ihr sonst noch besondere Pläne, Wünsche oder Vorsätze für das neue Jahr?

DEFECTO: Wir haben viele! Shows spielen. Songs schreiben und veröffentlichen, vielleicht ein Album. In Europa touren. Mehr Sport treiben (man muss für die Konzerte in Form kommen). Aufhören, uns über falsche Entscheidungen Gedanken zu machen und lieber alle Energie und Hingabe in unsere Songs stecken. Und nicht zu vergessen: Spaß haben!

DEFECTO Interview- Times are changing –

Bad surprise

DEFECTO (Facebook, Homepage) from Denmark have been very active since their last super album „Duality“ (Review). However, due to the nasty surprise virus called COVID, this activity has since been forced to be limited more to songwriting than live concerts. The last album „Duality“ of DEFECTO was a very diverse album. Real party crackers were among them. At that time everything was fine and nobody thought about something like COVID 19. The mood was best. But times change. And in the last two years more extreme than ever before. DEFECTO released new singles in the last months. So we from ‚metal-heads.de‘ thought it was time for a little update and asked the band what’s going on.

A look back

Metalhead: Hey guys. One year has passed now after your last album „Duality“. How are you doing?

DEFECTO: Hey there! First of all, thanks so much for your kind words about our newest singles as well as for your review of Duality. We really appreciate it! With regards to our current status, it is honestly not the best times to be a musician as you probably can imagine. We haven’t really been touring or playing major concerts since 2019, so we probably feel a bit trapped in our studio. But at least we get to write new music, so something good is coming out of it i guess!

Family and tradition

Metalhead: How had you spend Christmas?

DEFECTO: Christmas is usually just spent with our families, just doing the regular Danish Christmas traditions – you know, dancing around a tree caroling and eating way too much food and that kind of stuff. Not exactly the stuff of heavy metal, but we enjoy it 🙂

Music as a mood indicator

Metalhead: On your last album „Duality“ there was a colorful surprise package. It’s hard to put you  into a drawer. On „Duality“ there are very rocky and light songs. I fondly remember, for example, the funny video for „Rise“! The new singles are consistently harder and darker. This is joined by a much more progressive approach.

Is your music ultimately also an expression of your emotional world, which is influenced by what’s happening in the world and in your life?

DEFECTO: Great question! I think it is a mix of all the things you say. How we feel, what is happening in our life, what we like to listen to, how we see ourselves at a particular time. Duality was an interesting album that marked some changes for the band, where we generally had a bit more fun with the songwriting and didn’t take all of it too seriously, as you can tell from the videos. But especially for songs like „Rise“ and „All for You“. Those songs are clearly not dark or serious, so trying too hard to go in that direction wouldn’t have made any sense anyhow!

Fans‘ reactions to „Duality

Metalhead: The reviews for „Duality“ were mostly very positive. Has it also been well received by the fans? Were you able to successfully market your album despite the pandemic crisis?

DEFECTO: The response was a bit mixed! Mostly it’s been really positive, but of course we also get some people who focus on things they liked less about the stuff on „Duality“. But as an artist, that will never stop happening so we really don’t mind it that much. We’re fortunate to have some really dedicated fans and we definitely also felt that when we released „Duality“.

On the marketing side, things have been quite bad because of Corona, but like previously stated there wasn’t much we could do, and we’re honestly at a point where we’d rather put energy into our new music.

Look forward

Metalhead: I went back and read my review of your last album. That was in October 2020, where I hoped that Covid would end soon, so that I’d be able to see you play live. Unfortunately my wish didn’t come true and the year 2021 was also punished by Covid 19. An end to this cursed crisis does not seem to be in sight. You expressed in a 2018 interview with ‚metal-heads.de‘ that you are a live band and enjoy these gigs more than anything else.

Were you able to play gigs at all and present your latest album live?

DEFECTO: Yeah, that is so true! Getting that live experience brings a completely different aspect to the music. And we feel like a lot of the people that might not be extremely excited about our records would probably find our live shows more engaging. But unfortunately, we really haven’t been able to play a lot of stuff from „Duality„. A lot of missed chances due to Corona. But we want to look ahead and focus on bringing the best we’ve got for our next album, and just do that instead of feeling sad about what we haven’t been able to do. Not that we want to forget about „Duality“, and the songs from that album will get their place in setlists in the future. But there’s not much else to do than to keep moving forward.

Streaming-Events

Metalhead: Many bands that were critical of so-called streaming events at the beginning of the crisis are now more open to this issue. Even though they are of course no substitute for real live concerts, I have seen streaming concerts that have entertained me well. 

Is something like this an option for you?

DEFECTO: We actually did this! But, surprise, we did it as a part of our Danish School Tour that we do in Denmark, where we basically visit elementary schools and play to crowds of 8-15 year olds and tell them about the music and the story behind everything. We had a few weeks where we had to stream our concerts, and while it was better than nothing at all, it’s just nowhere near the real deal.

Not to sound negative, but you might as well go look at a concert on YouTube – the experience is not that different, or maybe that’s just the concert-hungry musician in me who thinks like that.

It becomes serious

We were just talking about the fact that songwriting is also always a result of the current situation and emotional world.

Can you tell us something about the genesis and content of the new songs?

DEFECTO: Songwriting for our upcoming album has once again taken a complete shift compared to previous albums. This time around the band decided to put our two primary songwriters – Nicklas and Frederik – on a leave from their dayjob for 2 months to sit in the studio writing as many songs as possible. So it is the first time where all the songs were basically written at the same time, which might explain the higher degree of similarity between the songs.

Inspiration came a lot from the state of the world, for sure, and some of the frustrations that we feel with the things that are going on. The next song “Ball of Hatred” which comes out on Friday, January 21st also deals with these things and cranks the heaviness even further up.

New album 2022?

Metalhead: Were the last singles a completed trio, that will have nothing to do with an upcoming album? Or do they indicate the direction that future material will take?

DEFECTO: They certainly do indicate direction to some degree, and might eventually end up on our next album. We have on purpose not decided what we will do but have instead just decided to release songs when we want to and not worry too much about fitting them into the context of an album. This year (2022) we’re going to be finishing (and maybe releasing) as many songs as we can, and when we feel like we are ready for it we will work on them in the context of an album.

METALHEAD: Do you have any special plans, wishes or resolutions for the new year?

DEFECTO: We have many! Play shows. Write and release songs, maybe an album. Tour in Europe. Exercise more (need to get in shape for shows). Stop worrying about making wrong decisions. Bring intention and dedication into our songs. Have fun!
