HÄMÄRÄ im Interview-Packender Metal aus Castle Rock
(English version below)
MH: Was sind Eure nächsten Pläne?

Thrilling Metal from Castle Rock-HÄMÄRÄ in interview
Intro
HÄMÄRÄ (Facebook) are a modern metal band whose music is composed of various elements. Symphonic elements are also included, which give the sound a denser, epic atmosphere. But this is not the only thing that distinguishes the sound. The progressive vibe of the songs is also a special feature. Not only is there a focus on variance vocally, but there is also a lot to discover sonically. I see a lot of potential in this band and their current album „Ivory Tower“ has impressed me very much. (Review). So I immediately asked the band some questions… Josh as the singer and bassist of the band was kind enough to answer my questions.
Interview
The bandname
MH: Hello all! Thanks in advance for your time and effort!
Your band name HÄMÄRÄ is very unusual and even more so one would not suspect that this name belongs to an American band.what is the meaning of the name and why did you choose it?
Josh: Hämärä is a Finnish word used to describe the dark, gloomy time between day and night. Having Scandinavian metal as one of our biggest musical influences at the time the band was formed had us looking into a fitting Scandinavian themed name. This came after a lot of research into words that both sounded cool and where the definition of the word described our sound. We loved the imagery of hämärä as we wanted to create heavy music that didn’t fall in line with a common metal theme of very dark lyrics that lean on profanities
The long break
MH: You have a break of several years behind you. What was the reason?
Josh: A number of the members had a handful of big life events (e.g., having kids, new jobs) and we just had a hard time making the time to keep up as a band. Although, even with the break, we found the time to continue writing music, just not playing live.
MH: Were there any personnel changes in the band or did the original line-up get back together?
Josh: The only member that we lost during the break was our old drummer, so as we reunited, we focused on recording our favorite songs we had written over the break and hired Alex Bosson from Helion Prime and Lunar to record the drums for us on the album. Shortly after releasing the album, we found our new drummer Orlando Manzanares to fill the remaining spot in the band.
MH: What was the trigger for the reunion? Or were you never really gone?
Josh: Honestly, we never really stopped writing during the hiatus. We found the time to continue writing music, just not playing live. When we finished recording the album, we fell in love with the growth we had made and really wanted to fill the drummer position and reignite our presence.
Progress
MH: In any case, the new album „Ivory Tower“ is a big step forward compared to your debut album „Broken“. The production is much more powerful in sound. Is that due to the technical progress or did someone else take over the production?
Josh: A little of both. We spent a lot of time focusing on our personal musicianship and songwriting capabilities. When it came time to mix the album, we reached out to our long time friend Taylor Hahn to bring out our vision during the mixing stage. He worked very closely with us to nail the mix we were looking for.
A colorful bunch
MH: The songwriting has become much more varied and reveals even more your different musical influences and preferences. I’ve read that you are a diverse bunch in that respect. Do you work together as a team in songwriting?
Josh: Well you nailed it as we really do have a lot of different influences across all of our members. Our songwriting process starts out with our guitarists laying the groundwork in Guitar Pro. I then have them record their scratch parts into Logic Pro where the real production begins.
At that point every instrument, part and song structure is fair game for Tony and myself to work on. We focus on building the synth, orchestral, and vocal tracks. As the song takes shape, I start restructuring the song and writing in new guitar parts to finalize the arrangement
MH: Which song on the album was the most difficult to realize?
Josh: For myself it was “Retribution” as it was the first time I tried to write a song with mostly clean vocals. I hated all of my writing and takes on it for about a year before I settled in to something I loved.
For the band, “The Fallen” changed the most, only keeping three parts from the original song. We probably wrote and tried out dozens of arrangements and probably 50 riffs until we felt like it was in the right place.
The fire is lit again
MH: „Ivory Tower“ has been on the market since April. How is the feedback from magazines and fans so far?
Josh: We’ve been blown away with the reception from magazines and fans. We’ve had reviews ranging from 6.5/10 to 10/10, averaging out to about 8.5. Our most loyal fans hit us up weekly letting us know how much they listen to the album and are stoked to start seeing us perform live again. This has really lit a fire under us and got us excited to build on this momentum that we’ve started!
The videos
MH: You have released two videos from the new album so far, „Under The Sun“ and „Hardly Awake“. In the elaborate videos you are the actors in the stories. Who is responsible for the ideas and the script?
Josh: Tony and Aaron put in the majority of the work for the ideas, scripts, scenes and props. They met with me to discuss the lyrics and ran with it from there.
MH: How does it feel to slip into a certain role as a performer in the videos?
Josh: I love the scenes where we are playing the songs. To just feel the energy and be able to go all out was a blast. As far as the acting was concerned, the easiest part was when I played the part in “Under the Sun” as it fits in line perfectly with my professional work life in industrial cybersecurity which is hard work and a high stress environment.
MH: Will there be more videos?
Josh: We will put out a lyric video for one of the songs on this album later this year, but we haven’t decided which song yet. When we release our new single we are recording right now “Exiled” we will probably consider recording another music video to premiere it.
Wrong goals in life
MH: The videos are about psychological suffering situations. The lyrics of the other songs convey a similar mood. What are the songs about?
Josh: “Under the Sun” is focused on the old adage that there is “nothing new under the sun”. The pursuit of wealth and wisdom is meaningless because it has all been done before. The storyline in the music video follow the main character through life who pursued wealth and a career above all else, and in the end missed out on a lot in life. When he became an old man he finally realized this, but it was too late. He looks back on life realizing everything that he missed while he pursued a meaningless life.
„Hardly Awake” is really describing someone in life who is just completely overwhelmed by everything in life and he just can’t adapt to it. Everything in his life goes wrong at once and he finally snaps. In the music video, this leads the audience to believe he has murdered everyone who had done him wrong, but the video ends with a twist where he actually buried himself. This alludes to him actually finally overcoming everything and burying his former self.
MH: Where did the inspiration for this content come from?
Josh: “Under the Sun” is actually inspired from Ecclesiastes in the Bible where King Solomon pursued wisdom, earthly pleasures, and wealth. He was considered to be the wisest man who had ever lived and at the end of his life he realized that all of his pursuits were meaningless. He did not find happiness in any of it.
“Hardly Awake” was really just inspired by a scene I kept seeing in my head where a man was completely panicking, holding his head and losing his mind while the rest of the world was speeding by him. I love to write songs based off of a short couple of scenes I see in my head and leave the interpretation up to the audience.
The „elite“ in the ivory tower
MH: Often musicians process personal things or experiences in their songs. Is that also the case with you?
Josh: Not really for me. I don’t have that kind of personal attachment to my songs. I just enjoy writing about cool scenes I see in my head.
MH: What does the symbol of the „ivory tower“ stand for?
Josh: Ivory Tower is focused on describing the political elite that run the world. They sit in their Ivory Tower and make decisions for everyone else while sitting behind a wall of protection. They consistently are playing with other people’s lives, killing their constituents with their decisions all while hiding behind a veneer.
Label and further plans
MH: What are your next plans? Will there be concerts in Europe in the long run or do you want to concentrate on the American sector first?
Josh: We are currently working on contracting with a label today. This will be one of our first topics of focus for 2023. We will either do an American tour, or preferably a couple week long tour in Europe.
MH: When and where was the last time any of you visited Europe? Is there anything you like in Europe besides metal music?
Josh: Only one of the band members (Tony) has actually been to Europe. For the rest of us, we just love the metal that comes out of Europe and the intensity of the metal fanbase out there.
World crisis
MH: We have a big problem in Europe after the COVID 19 pandemic crisis in the event industry. Big festivals and worldwide known bands are less affected by the problem, but a lot of smaller and medium festivals and concerts are cancelled. The main reason for this is the very poor ticket presales. Therefore, organizers and bands cannot and do not want to take any financial risk. People are very insecure because of all the lockdowns during COVID. On top of that, there is the financial factor. COVID has led to an increase in the living costs, which has been exacerbated by Russia’s war against Ukraine. What is the situation like in your country?
Josh: I don’t believe we have been hit as hard as Europe. While there are a number of tours that are being cancelled, this is usually due to logistical problems or band members catching COVID. The national and international shows I’ve been to in the Denver had been filled with fans hungry and eager to get out and see live music again. During the pandemic, it was actually great for local bands. With the larger acts out of the picture, the venues were packed for local bands.
MH: Has everything returned to normal?
Josh: For the most part, we are back to normal in Colorado, but it is definitely a story depending on the region in America. The only thing that really sucks at this point is how divisive and political everything has become. The great thing about the metal community is that for the most part, we keep all of that away from us and focus on our common love for metal.
