THE PINPRICKS stechen wieder- Single „Ritual“

aus dem Norden Deutschlands ist wieder mit THE PINPRICKS (Facebook, Homepage ) am Start. Glück für uns alle! Denn so können sich meine Blutkörperchen mal wieder an eine andere Form gewöhnen ( ???–>Erklärung siehe Review zur EP „Bait“).

„Bait“ war die EP von THE PINPRICKS aus dem letzten Jahr und hat mich sehr begeistert. Nun ist heute die Videopremiere der neuen Single „Ritual“. Und wir von `metal-heads.de´ fanden das eine hervorragende Gelegenheit, um der Band ein paar Fragen zu stellen. Unter anderem geht es freilich um das aktuelle brandheiße Video, aber auch um Vergangenes und Zukünftiges.

Ronja (Gitarre, Gesang) und Nils (Bass) haben sich netterweise den Fragen von `metal-heads.de´ gestellt. Viel Spaß dabei….

COVID-19 und die Kreativität

MH: Die Veröffentlichung der EP „Bait“ liegt nun über ein Jahr zurück und wie bei so vielen anderen auch fiel Eure Veröffentlichung genau in den Beginn der coronabedingten Einschränkungen. Gerade für eine geborene Live-Band wie Ihr es seid, ist das eine komplette Katastrophe, oder?

Nils: Bei uns war es ja so, dass wir Gott sei Dank eine Woche vor dem Lockdown noch unsere Releaseparty zu „Bait“ machen konnten. Dabei hatten wir noch Glück, dass wir einem vollen Haus gespielt haben und das Publikum uns echt geil gefeiert hat. So konnten wir an dem Abend auch noch viele CDs verkaufen und es hat uns zusätzlich noch im Nachgang gepusht, indem wir online einen guten Umsatz erzielen konnten. Trotzdem war es natürlich schade, dass wir viele Gigs absagen mussten, weil wir verdammt gerne live spielen. Aber eine Katastrophe war es in wörtlichen Sinne nicht für uns.

Man musste sich halt damit abfinden. Glücklicherweise hatten wir viel Unterstützung und eine gut verlaufene Crowdfunding-Aktion. Sogar von der GEMA gab es Hilfe. Also insgesamt betrachtet ist den Umständen entsprechend gut für uns gelaufen. Da können wir uns echt nicht beschweren.

Ronja: Tatsächlich war es für uns nicht so negativ. Es ist natürlich schlimm, wenn man die ganzen Konzerte nicht spielen kann, aber wir hatten dadurch viel Zeit für Dinge, für die wir sonst keine oder nicht so viel Zeit gehabt hätten, wie z.B. die Streamvideos aus dem Proberaum oder das aufwendige Gartenkonzert.

Selbstverständlich konnten wir auch erheblich mehr Zeit in das Songwriting stecken oder zusätzlich unser erstes selbst produziertes Musikvideo drehen. Dazu wären wir wahrscheinlich bei den ganzen Live-Gigs nicht in der Lage gewesen. Für uns war die Pandemiezeit eine sehr kreative Zeit gewesen, in der wir gezwungen waren sehr viel selbst zu machen, wodurch wir aber auch viel gelernt haben, wie z.B. ein Video komplett selbst fertigzustellen.

Der Zahnarzt

MH: So schlimm die Covid 19-Krise alle Bands und alle Beteiligten der Kulturbranche auch getroffen hat, gab es gezwungenermaßen auch positive Auswüchse der ganzen Misere. So wie Ihr sind viele sehr kreativ geworden, um als Band oder Künstler seinen Fans noch präsent zu sein. Einige Sachen habt Ihr bei der ersten Frage schon angeschnitten. Gehen wir doch ein wenig weiter ins Detail. Ihr habt unter anderem ein bemerkenswertes Streaming Konzert der besonderen Art aufgenommen? Wie muss man sich das vorstellen?

Nils: Wir haben halt auch gesehen, dass andere Bands live im Internet gespielt und gestreamt haben. Dann haben wir uns ebenfalls informiert wie man das technisch umsetzen könnte. Gott sei Dank haben wir einen sehr guten Freund, der uns auch live abmischt. Er ist eine super Connection für uns geworden. Er kam dann mit seinem Mischpult in unseren Proberaum und wir haben einen Testdurchlauf gemacht. Wir haben es dann mit dem Handy abgefilmt und haben es direkt ins Internet auf einigen Plattformen geteilt.

Das kam irgendwie gut an und wir haben Bock auf mehr bekommen. Dann kam es zu der Geschichte mit unserem Zahnarzt… Der hat einen „kleinen“ Garten, wo wir einen Live-Stream gemacht haben. Durch viel Unterstützung mit einem kreativen Team waren wir in der Lage mit tollem Equipment und einer riesigen Lichtshow unser bestes und spekatulärstes Live-Stream-Konzert abzurocken. Es war natürlich mal eine Erfahrung so ein ganzes Set ohne Publikum zu spielen.

Ronja: Andere Dinge, die wir nebenbei noch alle gemacht haben, hatten wir ja schon in der ersten Antwort angeschnitten. Neben neuen Songs, Streaming Konzerten und Videodreh haben wir ein neues Logo entworfen, unseren ganzen Internetauftritt im Bereich Social Media überarbeitet, unserer Homepage neu gestaltet und neue Bandfotos gemacht. Wir haben die Zeit also genutzt, um genau darüber nachzudenken wie wir aussehen wollen, was wir für einen Look haben wollen und wer wir als Band eigentlich sind.

Konkrete Pläne

MH: Ihr habt mich damals mit Eurem Album „Bait“ voll abgeholt. Dieser klassische Garage-Rock mit teils harter Gangart und modernen Attitüden ist sehr erfrischend und mitreißend. Wie Ihr bereits erwähnt habt, seid Ihr in der Zwischenzeit auch musikalisch sehr fleißig gewesen. Was dürfen wir von Euch in diesem Jahr noch erwarten?

Ronja: Also heute kommt unser erstes selbst produziertes Musikvideo raus. Die Single „Ritual“ kommt dann offiziell ein paar Wochen später raus. Dann haben wir noch zwei weitere Singles, die dann insgesamt eine kleine Mini-EP bilden. Ein zweites Video wird es noch geben. Außerdem stehen endlich wieder ein paar Konzerte an, wo wir mal wieder live spielen. Sehr wichtig zu erwähnen wäre natürlich noch, dass wir bereits in der Planung für unser Debütalbum sind, was wir nächstes Jahr aufnehmen wollen. Es ist allerdings noch nicht ganz sicher, ob es dann nächstes Jahr veröffentlicht wird.

Neues Live-Set

Nils: In unserem neuen Live-Set sind bereits Songs enthalten, die wir bisher noch nicht aufgenommen haben. Logischerweise werden auch einige ältere Songs weiter dabei sein, aber wir haben sehr viele neue Songs im Programm und sind mega gespannt wie diese beim Publikum ankommen werden. Schließlich haben wir uns technisch weiter entwickelt und einige neue Effekte und Sounds sind dazugekommen, die alles etwas moderner machen. Wir sind sehr auf das Feedback gespannt.

Wohin geht die musikalische Entwicklung?

MH: Man merkt den drei neuen Songs an, dass sie mehr in die Richtung „Voices“ von der ersten EP gehen. Der Sound wird ne Spur härter und abgedrehter. Hatte ich bei der ersten EP noch in gewissen Bereichen Parallelen zu DANKO JONES gezogen, so fühle ich mich jetzt auch stellenweise eher an IN THIS MOMENT erinnert, was vor allem auch am Gesang von Ronja liegt, der in gewissen Momenten so verrucht sexy und verrückt wie Maria Brink klingt. Wird der Sound von THE PINPRICKS härter werden oder reizt man die Range einfach weiter aus?

Nils: Du hast die Ehre die drei Songs schon vorab hören zu können….

Ronja freut sich: Erst einmal danke für den schönen Vergleich!

Nils: Ja stimmt. DANKO JONES, IN THIS MOMENT und insbesondere deren Sängerin Maria Brink sind nun mal echt geil und hören wir sehr gerne. Ob die Songs jetzt härter werden, können wir gar nicht so genau sagen. Wir wissen manchmal überhaupt nicht so konkret, was passieren wird und probieren einfach Sachen aus. Entweder hört es sich gut an oder eben nicht.

Wir produzieren mittlerweile recht modern im Proberaum und schauen dort, was man so alles machen kann. Damit reizen wir natürlich unsere Range weiter aus und wollen sehen, was zu Dritt so geht und was nicht. Wir sind für fast alles offen und setzen uns vorher nicht enge Grenzen. Die Songs müssen Spaß machen! Ronja kann da bestimmt noch was zu sagen, da sie die Songwriterin ist und ich eher der Riffschreiber.

Ronja: Nils hat das Wichtigste schon gesagt. Die Songs müssen Spaß machen! So kann man im Vorfeld nicht sagen, ob der Sound härter, softer, punkiger, bluesiger, mit mehr Metal oder wie auch immer wird. Man kann es natürlich ein wenig steuern, aber im Grunde sind wir sehr spontan und machen das, was uns gerade einfällt. Und was gefällt, wir dann weiter ausgearbeitet und sieht dann, was dabei herauskommt. Es kann auch sein, dass es dann mal poppiger oder eben härter wird.

Momentan können wir sagen, dass es mehr in die Richtung der neuen Songs gehen wird. Es wird also moderner, vielleicht auch ein wenig kommerzieller im Verhältnis zur ersten EP. Dies liegt daran, dass sich unser Songwriting entwickelt und besser wird. Aber eine konkrete Vorhersage über unsere Entwicklung gibt es nicht.

Nils: Wir sind selber gespannt, wohin uns die Reise musikalisch noch führen wird.

Das Video zu „Ritual“

MH: Ihr habt Euch bei Euren Videos bisher immer viel Mühe gegeben, um die Songs optisch ins rechte Licht zu rücken. Die Videos sind sehr unterschiedlich geworden. Wie seid Ihr an das neue Video „Ritual“ herangegangen, das schon recht verrückt geworden ist? Wie kam es dazu?

Nils: Das Video ist wie oben erwähnt der Pandemie geschuldet. Da wir ohnehin ganz passables Equipment haben wie z.B. gute Software zur Filmbearbeitung oder filmische Ausrüstung, weil Ronjas Mutter Fotografin ist, reifte die Idee heran, dass wir doch selber ein Video von vorne bis hinten produzieren könnten. Es gab kein genaues Konzept oder Drehbuch und wir sind sehr spontan an die Sache herangegangen. So kam es auch zu witzigen Geschichten.

Beispielsweise hatten wir eine Szene im Kasten und beim Anschauen sagte Ronja dann, dass das Ganze total unscharf wäre uns sagte zu mir. „Hey Mann, du hast ja gar keine Brille auf!“ Ja, dem war auch so und daher habe ich die Szene nicht scharf gekriegt…Hahaha. Das sind natürlich Fehler, die passieren und ganz witzig waren….

Ronja kommentiert: Im Nachhinein witzig sind!

Nils: Ja gut… dann eben im Nachhinein witzig sind. Das wäre einem Profi selbstverständlich nicht passiert. Aber wir hatten ja keinen Zeitdruck und so haben wir einzelne Puzzleteile gefilmt, die wir letztendlich zusammengefügt haben. Da uns logischerweise keiner zusammen filmen konnte, besteht das Video aus zusammengeschnittenen Einzelaufnahmen der Bandmitglieder.

Wir finden, dass es irgendwie verrückt ist, aber eben auch zu uns passt, so vom Stil und den Effekten her. Es lässt auch ein bisschen Zeit zum träumen… also eigentlich kann sich jeder seinen eigenes Ding bzw. seinen eigenen Eindruck daraus machen. Es geht ja um Rituale und jeder hat doch so seine eigenen Rituale, die er oft für sich selber gestaltet. Wir sind jedenfalls mit dem Video echt zufrieden und finden es vor dem Hintergrund, dass wir vorher gar keine Ahnung von einem Videodreh hatten, echt cool.

Viel los im nächsten Video zur Single „Bait“

MH: Ganz aktuell habt Ihr mit den Dreharbeiten zu dem nächsten Video vom Song „Bait“ begonnen. Können wir uns da wieder auf etwas ganz anderes gefasst machen?

Ronja: Ihr könnt Euch auf alle Fälle auf etwas ganz anderes gefasst machen. Es ist das aufwendigste von allen Videos, die wir bisher gemacht haben. Bisher hatten wir selber oft immer nur ne fixe Idee und ein grobes Konzept und haben dann die Leute machen lassen. Durch das Video zu „Ritual“ sind wir nun auch mehr mit der Materie vertraut, was so wichtig für ein Videodreh ist und wie das so funktioniert. Daher haben wir diesmal tatsächlich ein ganzes Drehbuch geschrieben. Der Filmer hat tatsächlich das Ganze so übernommen, wo ich vorher dachte, dass der unser Drehbuch erst einmal komplett auseinandernimmt. Das hat uns echt überrascht und super gefreut.

Wir hatten sehr viele Künstler dabei, aber ich möchte jetzt gar nicht soooo viel verraten. Nur so viel… Wir waren sehr kreativ und es wird sicherlich sehr crazy, eine verrückte Geschichte mit spannenden Bildern, coolen Künstlern und geilem Make Up und geilen Oufits. Es wird wohl das verrückteste und aufwendigste Video werden, was wir je gemacht haben.

Nils: Es war zwar super anstrengend das ganze Set aufzubauen, aber es hat auch total Spaß gemacht mit den ganzen vielen tollen kreativen Künstlern zusammenzuarbeiten. Das war echt ne spannende Sache, die uns auf ein neues Level gehoben hat. Es ist wie bei der Musik. Man entwickelt sich weiter. So sind wir immer mehr in der Lage ein Video bildlich so umzusetzen, wie wir uns das vorher in unseren Köpfen ausgemalt haben. Natürlich hat das immer auch finanzielle Grenzen, was z.B. so Spezialeffekte angeht. Das nächste Video zu „Bait“ ist jetzt im finalen Schnitt und wir sind voll gespannt wie das Ergebnis aussehen wird, ob es letztlich unseren Wünschen und Vorstellungen entsprechen wird.

Pure rock

from the north of Germany is back at the start. Lucky for all of us! „Bait“ was the EP of THE PINPRICKS (Facebook, Homepage ) from last year and has excited me very much. Now today is the video premiere of the new single „Ritual“. And we from `metal-heads.de‘ think this an excellent opportunity to ask the band a few questions. Among other things, it’s about the current hot video, but also about the past and the future.

Ronja and Nils have answered some questions from ‚metal-heads.de‘. Have fun with it.

COVID-19 and the creativity

MH: The release of the EP „Bait“ is now over a year ago and as with so many others, your release fell exactly at the beginning of the corona-related restrictions. Especially for a born live band like you are, this is a complete disaster, isn’t it?

Nils: With us it was so that we could make our release party to „Bait“ one week before the Lockdown started. We were lucky that we played for a full audience and the fands celebrated us really cool. So we were able to sell a lot of CDs that night and it also pushed us in the aftermath, as we were able to achieve a good turnover online. Nevertheless it was a pity that we had to cancel a lot of gigs, because we love to play live. But it was not a catastrophe for us in the literal sense. You just had to accept it. Fortunately we had a lot of support and a crowdfunding campaign that went well. There was even support from GEMA. So all in all it went well for us, considering the circumstances. We really can’t complain about that.

Ronja: Actually, it didn’t go so negatively for us. Of course it’s bad when you can’t play all the concerts, but it gave us a lot of time for things we otherwise wouldn’t have had any or not as much time for, like the stream videos from the rehearsal room or the elaborate garden concert. Of course, we could also put considerably more time into songwriting or additionally shoot our first self-produced music video. We probably wouldn’t have been able to do that with all the live gigs. For us, the Pandemic period had been a very creative time in which we were forced to do a lot ourselves, but through which we also learned a lot, such as completing a video ourselves.

The dentist

MH: As badly as the Covid 19 crisis has hit all bands and all those involved in the cultural industry, there have inevitably also been positive outgrowths of the whole misery. Many have become very creative to be still present as a band or artist to his fans. You have already touched on some things in the first question. Let’s go a little further into detail. Among other things, you have recorded a remarkable streaming concert of a special kind? How do you imagine that?

Nils: We have also seen that other bands have played live on the Internet and streamed. Then we have also informed ourselves how you could technically implement this. Thank God we have a very good friend who also mixes us live. He has become a super connection for us. He came to our rehearsal room with his mixing console and we did a test run. We then filmed it with our cell phones and it went straight online at some platforms.

That went down well and we were ready for more. Then it came to the story with our dentist…. He has a „small“ garden where we did a live stream. With a lot of support from a creative team we were able to rock out our best and most spectacular live stream concert with a great team in the back, great equipment and a huge light show. It was of course an experience to play a whole set without an audience.

Ronja: Other things that we have done besides all, we had already touched on in the first answer. Besides new songs, streaming concerts and video shooting we designed a new logo, redesigned our whole social media presence, redesigned our homepage and took new band photos. So we used the time to think about exactly how we want to look, what kind of look we want to have and who we actually are as a band.

Concrete plans

MH: You really picked me up with your album „Bait“. This classic garage-rock with partly hard style and modern attitudes is very refreshing and intoxicating. As you mentioned, you have been musically very busy in the meantime. What else can we expect from you this year?

Ronja: So today our first self-produced music video comes out. The single „Ritual“ will be officially released a few weeks later. Then we have two more singles, which then form a small mini EP in total. There will also be a second video for the single „Bait“. In addition, there are finally a few concerts coming up, where we will play live again. Of course it would be very important to mention that we are already planning our debut album, which we want to record next year. But it’s not sure yet if it will be released next year.

New live set

Nils: Our new live set already includes songs that we have not yet recorded. Logically, some older songs will still be there, but we have a lot of new songs in the program and are mega excited how these will be received by the audience. Finally, we have evolved technically and some new effects and sounds have been added that make everything a bit more modern. We are very excited about the feedback.

Where is the musical development going?

MH: In my opinion the three new songs go more in the direction of „Voices“ from the first EP. The sound is a bit harder and wackier. While I had drawn parallels to DANKO JONES in certain areas of the first EP, I now feel more reminded of IN THIS MOMENT in places, which is mainly due to Ronja’s vocals, which sound as sexy and crazy as Maria Brink in certain moments. Will the sound of THE PINPRICKS become heavier or do you simply push the range further?

Nils: You have the honor to hear the three songs in advance….

Ronja is happy: First of all, thank you for the nice comparison!

Nils: Yes, that’s right. DANKO JONES, IN THIS MOMENT and especially their singer Maria Brink are really cool and we like to listen to them. Whether the songs are getting harder now, we can’t really say. Sometimes we don’t really know what’s going to happen and we just try things out and either it sounds good or not. Meanwhile we produce quite modern in the rehearsal room and look there what one can do so everything. Of course, we’re pushing the limits of our range and want to see what works and what doesn’t work with the three of us. We are open to almost everything and don’t set ourselves narrow limits beforehand. The songs have to be fun! Ronja can certainly say something about it, because she is the songwriter and I am more the riff writer.

Ronja: Nils has already said the most important thing. The songs have to be fun! So you can’t say in advance if the sound will be harder, softer, punkier, bluesier, more metal or whatever. Of course you can control it a little bit, but basically we are very spontaneous and do what comes to our mind. And what pleases, we then further elaborated and then sees what comes out of it. It can also be that it becomes then sometimes poppier or just harder. At the moment we can say that it will go more in the direction of the new songs. So it will be more modern, maybe a little more mainstream in relation to the first EP. This is because our songwriting is developing and getting better. But there is no concrete prediction about our development.

Nils: We are curious ourselves where the journey will lead us musically.

The video for „Ritual

MH: You’ve always put a lot of effort into your videos so far, to put the songs in the right light visually. The videos so far have become very different. How did you approach the new video „Ritual“, which has already become quite crazy? How did it come about?

Nils: As mentioned above, the video is due to the pandemic. Since we have anyway quite passable equipment such as good software for film editing or film equipment, because Ronja’s mother is a photographer. The idea matured that we could produce a video from front to back. There was no exact concept or script and we approached the matter very spontaneously.

That’s how funny stories came about. For example, we had a scene in the can and then, while watching it, Ronja said that the whole thing was totally out of focus and then said to me. „Hey man, you don’t have your glasses on!“ Yes, that was the case and why I didn’t get the scene in focus…Hahaha. These are of course mistakes that happen and were quite funny….

Ronja goes in between: In hindsight are funny!

Nils: Yes well… which are funny in retrospect. That wouldn’t have happened to a professional, of course. But we had no time pressure and so we filmed individual puzzle pieces, which we finally put together. Since logically no one could film us together, the video consists of individual shots of the band members cut together. We think it’s kind of crazy, but it also suits us in terms of style and effects. It also leaves a little time for dreaming… so actually everyone can make his own thing or his own impression of it. It’s all about rituals and everyone has his own rituals, which he often creates for himself. Anyway, we are really satisfied with the video and find it really cool against the background that we had no idea of a video shoot before this.

A lot going on in the next video for the single „Bait

MH: You have just started shooting the next video for the song „Bait“. Can we expect something completely different again?

Ronja: You can definitely expect something completely different. It will be the most elaborate of all the videos we have made so far. Until now, we often only had a fixed idea and a rough concept and then let the people do it. Through the video for „Ritual“ we are now more familiar with the matter, what is so important for a video shoot and how it works.

So we actually wrote a whole script this time. The filmmaker actually took over the whole thing like that, where before I thought he was going to completely tear apart our script first. That really surprised us and made us super happy. We had a lot of artists with us, but I don’t want to reveal soooo much now. Only so much… We were very creative and it will surely be very crazy, a crazy story with exciting pictures, cool artists and cool make up and cool oufits. It will probably be the craziest and most elaborate video we have ever made.

Nils: It was super exhausting to build the whole set, but it was also a lot of fun to work with all the great creative artists. It was really exciting and took us to a new level. It’s like music. You continue to develop. So we are more and more able to realize a video visually the way we imagined it in our heads before. Of course, there are always financial limits, for example, when it comes to special effects. The next video for „Bait“ is now in the final cut and we are fully excited about how the result will look, whether it will ultimately meet our wishes and ideas.
