ARCHITECTS-„the classic symptoms of a broken spirit“

ARCHITECTS (Homepage / Facebook) sind schon wieder mit einem neuen Album am Start. Letztes Jahr im Februar haben sie erst das grandiose Album „For Those That Wish To Exist“ mit satten 15 Tracks veröffentlicht (Review). Themen dieses Albums waren eher die allgegenwärtige globalen Probleme in der Welt. Keine zwei Jahre später erscheint am 21. Oktober das neue Album „the classic symptoms of a broken spirit“, dass sich mit 11 Songs den ganz persönlichen Problemen des menschlichen Geistes widmet. Also hören wir mal rein, ob das neue Werk dem Vorgänger das Wasser reichen kann.

Das Cover fällt durch seine extreme Schlichtheit auf.

Es ist komplett in weiß gehalten. Ein schwarzer Schriftzug in kleinen Lettern mit dem Bandnamen und dem Albumtitel sticht als einziges Merkmal deutlich hervor. Bei genauerem Hinsehen kann man noch ein blasses Symbol unter der Schrift erkennen.

Es wird härter und industrieller

Auf dem letzten Album hatten ARCHITECTS teilweise mehr Wert auf melodische Songgestaltung als auf brutale Aggression gelegt. Zudem nutzte man gerne symphonische Elemente in den Songs, vor allem in Form von Streichern, die den Songs teilweise einen epischen Ausdruck verschafften. Die Fans mussten sich also umstellen, da eine Veränderung zum Sound der ersten Alben deutlich war. Und nun müssen sich die Fans wieder ein wenig umstellen.

Denn das neue Album schlägt insgesamt wieder einen härteren Weg ein. Die deftige Kostprobe kam vor fünf Monaten in Form der ersten Videosingle „when we were young“! Mit dem schnellen scharfen Riffing feiert der Song direkt einen knalligen Einstieg. Die Riffs hätte ich in der Form nicht von der Band erwartet. Es folgen die brachialen Gitarrenwände und wuchtiges Drumming, wobei der Song kurz beschleunigt, um dann in einem melodischen Chorus emporzusteigen. Der Song ist eine Wucht! Aufsehenerregend sind auch die Millionen von Klicks auf YouTube, die die Videos der Band jedesmal erreichen.

„Burn Down My House“ ist die (einzige) Ballade des Albums,

aber nicht eine der kitschigen Sorte. Hier wird zudem eine weitere Änderung im Sound von ARCHITECTS deutlich, nämlich die Einbindung elektronischer Effekte. So beginnt der Song schwerfällig und düster mit depressiven fast gesprochenen Vocals. Kontrastierend dazu wird der Sound massiver und intensive melodischen Gesangslinien mit epischen Ausmaßen nisten sich sofort im Kopf ein. Ein Song, in dem viel Verzweiflung mitschwingt. Er hat eine derartige hypnotische fesselnde Wirkung, das ich diesen Song spontan beim ersten Durchlauf dreimal hintereinander zu gehört habe. Ein wunderschöner Song!

Fast fröhlich im Vergleich mit den anderen Songs erklingt „Spit The Bone“ mit seiner mehr rockigen catchigen Art. „Tear Gas“ walzt wiederum mit dunkel getrimmten Brutalo-Riffs voran. So massiv ausgestattet maschieren ARCHITECTS mit ihrer eigenen unvergleichlichen coolen Mischung voran und stampfen mit brutalen Breakdowns stampft später mit massiven Breakdowns alles in Grund und Boden. Auch hier stimmt die Mischung, welche Euch mitreißen wird.

Industrial Touch

Der Opener „Deep Fake“ zeigt ebenfalls eindrucksvoll, wie man es schafft seinen eigenen typischen Soundstyle immer wieder anders zu verpacken. Mit geschickten Rhythmus- und Stimmungswechseln gelingt es dem Song zusammen mit den düsteren Synthies eine ganz besondere bedrohliche Atmosphäre zu erschaffen. Und dieser industrial touch ist auch ein Markenzeichen des neuen Albums. Es ist einfach eine neue Zutat im soundtechnischen Konzept und sorgt für coole besondere Momente.

Gesanglich ist das übrigens von Sänger Sam Carter eine fantastische Vorstellung, da er sich stimmlich in verschiedensten Facetten zeigt, so dass eine Eintönigkeit sich erst gar nicht einstellt. Aggression existiert neben kraftvoller Melodik bis hin zu einer gefühlbetonten Darbietung. Dies repräsentiert beispielsweise der Song “ A New Moral Low Ground“ in perfekter Art und Weise. Fast zerbrechlich wirkende Passagen werden von zerstörerischen wütenden Parts abgelöst und wieder einmal lässt man es mit einem eingängigen Chorus krachen.

Am Ende kommt es knüppeldick

Während auf den meisten Alben der letzte Track eher einen ruhigeren Ausklang einläutet, explodiert hier überraschenderweise mit „be very afraid“ am Ende der härteste Song des ganzen Albums. Ein wilde gnadenlose Explosion, die den Hörer zum Abschluss förmlich zerfetzt und sprachlos zurücklässt. Irrwitzigerweise endet nach diesem musikalischen Explosion das Album mit idyllischem Vogelgezwitscher.

Fazit

ARCHITECTS haben es mit Bravour geschafft das tolle letzte Album noch zu übertreffen. Das neue Album klingt noch lebendiger als das letzte Album und ist in sich konzeptionell stimmiger. Somit beweisen ARCHITECTS, dass ihre Reise soundtechnisch keinesfalls vorherbestimmt ist. Sie probieren sich aus und so lange es sich so genial anhört, habe ich rein gar nichts dagegen. Die elektronischen Elemente fügen sich fantastisch ein und ergänzen das musikalische Erscheinungsbild. Das schöne dabei ist, dass man seiner Wurzeln nicht vergisst. So enstehen Alben, die einfach begeistern. 10-Punkte-Mission erfüllt!

ARCHITECTS (Homepage / Facebook) are already back with a new album. Last year in February they released the great album „For Those That Wish To Exist“ with 15 tracks (review). Topics of this album were rather the omnipresent global problems in the world. Less than two years later, the new album „the classic symptoms of a broken spirit“ will be released on October 21, with 11 songs dedicated to the very personal problems of the human spirit. So let’s listen to whether the new album can hold a candle to its predecessor.

The cover stands out for its extreme simplicity.

It is completely in white. A black lettering in small letters with the band name and the album title stands out clearly as the only feature. If you have a closer look, you can still see a pale symbol under the font.

It gets harder and….. different.

On the last album ARCHITECTS had partly put more emphasis on melodic song design than on brutal aggression. In addition, they liked to use symphonic elements in the songs, especially in the form of strings, which sometimes gave the songs an epic expression. So the fans had to adjust, as a change from the sound of the first albums was clear. And now the fans have to adjust a little bit again.

Because the new album takes a harder path again. The hefty foretaste came five months ago with the first video single „when we were young“! With the fast sharp riffing, the song celebrates directly a banging entrance. Those riffs I would not have expected. The brute walls of guitars and massive drumming follow, with the song accelerating briefly before soaring into a melodic chorus. The song is a blast! Also sensational are the millions of clicks on YouTube that the band’s videos reach every time.

„Burn Down My House“ is the (only) ballad on the album,

but no cheesy one. Here, moreover, another change in the sound of ARCHITECTS becomes clear, namely the integration of electronic effects. So the song starts heavy and gloomy with depressive almost spoken vocals. Contrastingly, the sound becomes more massive and intense melodic vocal lines with epic proportions immediately nest in your head. It’s a song that resonates with a lot of despair. It has such a hypnotic captivating effect that I spontaneously listened to this song three times in a row during the first run-through. A beautiful song!

Almost cheerful in comparison sounds „Spit The Bone“ with its more rocky catchy way. „Tear Gas“ again waltzes forward with dark trimmed brutal riffs. So massively equipped ARCHITECTS mash ahead with their own incomparable cool mixture and stomp everything into the ground with brutal breakdowns. Another song to blast you away.

Industrial Touch

The opener „Deep Fake“ also shows impressively how you manage to pack your own typical sound style always different. The song succeds with clever rhythm and mood changes and the gloomy synths in creating a very special threatening atmosphere. And this industrial touch is also a trademark of the new album. It’s just a new ingredient in the sound concept and it’s perfect for cool special moments.

Vocally, by the way, this is a fantastic performance by singer Sam Carter, because he shows himself vocally in the most diverse facets, so that a monotony does not arise at all. Aggression exists next to powerful melodic up to an emotional performance. This represents for example the song “ a new moral low ground“ in a perfect way. Almost fragile passages are replaced by destructive angry parts and once again they let it rip with a catchy chorus.

A brutal ending

While on most albums, the last track tends to herald a quieter conclusion, here, surprisingly, the hardest song of the entire album explodes at the end. „be very afraid“ is a wild merciless explosion that literally shreds the listener at the end and leaves him speechless. Suprisingly after this musical explosion the album ends with idyllic birdsinging.

Conclusion

ARCHITECTS have managed with bravura to surpass the great last album. The new album sounds even more alive than the last album and is conceptually more coherent. Thus ARCHITECTS prove that their journey is by no means predetermined in terms of sound. They try themselves out and as long as it sounds so ingenious, I have nothing at all against it. The electronic elements fit in fantastically and complement the musical appearance. The nice thing is that they don’t forget their roots. This is how albums are created that simply inspire. 10-point-mission accomplished!
