Krasser Start
„Children Of Science“ bringt das Album wieder in härtere Fahrwasser, was ich sehr begrüße.
Fazit

LOCH VOSTOK (Facebook ) from Sweden had already convinced me with their album „Opus Ferox I-The Great Escape“ and even got the highest score (review). One reason for this was that the band had created a very individual sound that stood out from the crowd and had a strong recognition value. This was also due to the incredibly good singer Jonas Radehorn, who revealed fantastic versions of his voice with an incredible amount of charisma. At the time, I described the songs on the last album „Opus Ferox I – The Great Escape“ as „excellent epic compositions with powerful heaviness and soulful melodies“.
A rough start
The new album begins with a straightforward, heavy burner. I didn’t expect that. „Distant Assistance“ thunders through your ears at full throttle. But of course progressive structures are fused with fine details here. I am immediately reminded of how much craftsmanship the musicians use. The drums are infernal, the vocals phenomenal! The guitar riffs are on fire and the solo with lots of shredding fuel ignites at full throttle. LOCH VOSTOK have managed a perfect catapult start. I think it’s positive that LOCH VOSTOK are showing off a new level of heaviness.
Afterwards, however, „Cult Status“ gives you a little more rest and leaves the vehemence of the opener behind. I actually find the cut a bit extreme. After the opener, you’re pumped full of adrenaline and then you’re slowed down very vehemently. „Cult Status“ places more emphasis on the melodic vocals. You could describe it as a ballad and be enchanted by singer Jonas, who of course sounds flawless as always. Every now and then, however, the song breaks out of its soft ballad dress and rears up strongly. „The Great Wide Open“ also takes it easy, but also has some powerful moments without escalating.
A new hardness
And I’m slowly beginning to wish that things could get tougher again. After all, the opener blew me away and pumped me full of adrenaline to such an extent that I was ready for the next battle. Somehow you expect more moments like this on the album. My wish was about to come true. „Children Of Science“ takes the album back into heavier waters, which I very much welcome. This is where the epic moments that I love so much emerge again. I’m also generally taken with the heavy bass on the album, which sometimes comes through very clearly.
„Senses“ once again brings out the wilder side of LOCH VOSTOK. „Senses“ is a real highlight, in which the band let off steam with progressive passion over seven minutes. That’s where the strengths can be found! Crass heaviness is combined with melodic epic moments and some surprising twists and turns. I haven’t heard such wild thrashy parts on the last album and they surprised me as a new facet. I would also like to emphasize the spacey synth part from minute 03:40, which comes across as pretty cool. The use of synths is an important part of the sound concept anyway. On the one hand, they weave an atmospheric carpet of sound, but on the other hand they are also used as a dominant element.
The last songs are all quite crisp. „Rebel Command“ starts out hard as a rock with strong riffs and moves into the melodic part, where you can again hear the strong bass particularly well. The furious blastbeat parts open up epic dimensions. „Just Like That“ is a soulful power ballad that is relatively catchy compared to other songs. There is no lack of powerful heaviness, which alternates with melancholic, synth-influenced and impressive majestic phases. „Lords Of The Inanimate“ and „Ancient Body Switching Ritual“ bring the album to a no less impressive end.
Conclusion
The songs on „Opus Ferox II-Mark Of The Beast“ interweave the various musical threads even more finely, but the band also scales new heights of heaviness. The atmospheric component is even more emphasized, creating a darker world compared to the previous album. LOCH VOSTOK have thus consistently pursued their creative path, inviting us once again on a very special progressive musical adventure. We should accept this wonderful invitation! It’s an exciting journey!
